RMN mulls IPO to fund expansion, upgrade (http://news.balita.ph/html/article.php?story=20071211161742643)
Tuesday, December 11 2007 @ 04:17 PM UTC

Radio Mindanao Network (RMN), one of the Philippines' biggest radio networks, has laid down the foundation for becoming a (major) player in the stock exchange market within the next five years.

RMN president Eric Canoy said the company will use the proceeds of its initial public offering (IPO) to fund its expansion programs.

RMN is hoping to raise P500 million to P1 billion from the IPO.

To signify its confidence in the country's radio industry, RMN is earmarking a total of P300 million to acquire additional equipment for its radio stations.

Canoy said the amount for technology upgrade will be shared among RMN stations in key cities like Cebu, Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Davao.

RMN started investing P25 million in upgrading its Manila-based amplitude modulation (AM) station dzXL, along with frequency modulated (FM) station IFM, Canoy said.

"The market has dramatically changed and competition is still stiff. There are a lot of new equipment, and talents are expensive," he said last Thursday in an RMN-related event at the Marco Polo Plaza Cebu.

"We need to introduce something new. The last major development of radio was the advent of the FM stations in the 1970s," he said.

The need to innovate has prompted Canoy to launch, for the first time in the country, the use of a high definition radio or digital broadcasting where a single frequency targets a different market segment.

For FM stations, this means improved broadcast quality through a digital format, multi-casting and the messaging capability of radio sets.

Canoy also revealed that RMN is now in talks with car manufacturers for the adoption of high-definition radio in cars.

In the United States, he said 10 percent to 15 percent of all radio stations have capitalized on this new innovation.

"We want to encourage, even our competitors, to use these radio sets," he said.

But he said full operations of the high-end service may mean relocating transmission sites of the network.

"This will take some time but we take pride in being the first. If you don't passionately sell your product, people wouldn't passionately embrace it," he said.

Conversion of the two RMN radio stations in Manila to the digital format from the old analog broadcast is targeted to be finished in the middle of next year.

For dyHP in Cebu, the technology shift is slated in the second half of 2008, Canoy said.

Meanwhile, Canoy said RMN, which is popular in the Visayas and Mindanao, is targeting to expand in Luzon, particularly in Bicol.

RMN, which was founded in Cagayan de Oro, is celebrating its 55th year in the broadcast industry. It has 39 company-owned stations, excluding its affiliates.

This is an old news dated July this year.

Pasalubong Center soon to rise in Oro city hall (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&fi=p070731.htm&no=72)

Cagayan de Oro City (31 July) -- Plans are underway for the establishment of a Pasalubong Center, where tourists can buy something to bring home as souvenirs from Cagayan de Oro.

In a meeting with the members of the Food Processors Association of Northern Mindanao (FOPANORMIN), City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula said he will look for an area to help them realize their dream of having a Pasalubong Center in the city where all the products of Cagayan de Oro will be showcased.

Mayor Jaraula said that he would fully support their endeavor since it can greatly help along the efforts of the city government to promote Cagayan de Oro's vast potential for global tourism.

Through the suggestion of FOPANORMIN's officers, Mayor Jaraula is considering an area within the city hall compound as an ideal site for the pasalubong center.

Mayor Jaraula also tapped the City Hall Employees Multi-Purpose Credit Cooperative (CHEMCCO) to partner with FOPANORMIN along the establishment of the pasalubong center as well as an employees' canteen.

The city chief executive said that as soon as the details of the partnership shall have been finalized, the said center will be temprorarily established within the city hall compound.

Mayor Jaraula hoped that local and foreign tourists will flock to the pasalubong center, which can later be transferred to a permanent behind the Amphitheater where a proposed pedestrian bridge and a City Center Tower are envisioned to be constructed.

Mayor Jaraula likewise assured the FOPANORMIN that he will make his office as a linkage between key players in the tourism industry and the tourists and investors who will come to Cagayan de Oro. (Cagayan de Oro City IO)

Any update regarding this? And also the proposed pedestrian bridge and city Center tower?

Good News for you:

Guys, good evening! I am the only who's left here tonight. Hehehe.

Anyway, it's 21 storey hotel to be built at LKK. It's already confirmed.

Anyway, the proposed JR Borja Bridge is to be built next year along with the boulevard and local legislative building. (No confirmed date yet). DPWH Macarambon is now here in CDO to pay attention for the said JR Borja and boulevard projects.

The Pelaez bridge will be opened this late December 2007. Due to possible traffic again in Vamenta road once the bridge will be in full operation, the local government is planning for a flyover to be located at Macanhan junction.

Besides due to preliminary ballooning of population of CDO to more than 750,000 (other estimated more than 150,000 residents has not been counted yet by NSO. Final release of the census will be this early 2008), the local government has been planning to make CDO from 2 to 3 districts. ^^

For a meantime, the Robinsons Richmond Hills will have a grand opening this coming December 16, 2007.

JR Borja bridge project to start next year

A SIXTH bridge that would span across Cagayan de Oro River will rise next year after the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) readied the final stage of the project's technical plan.

Mayor Constantino Jaraula said, the plan was developed after he met with the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) 10 Regional Director Sinaulan Macarambon and her technical staff met to further review the proposed bridge project.

The construction of the 250-linear-meter-long, Spanish grant bridge project that would link the heavily congested J.R. Borja Street in the city proper and the densely populated Barangay Carmen will hopefully start either in March or April 2008, Mayor Jaraula said.

During the meeting, Mayor Jaraula asked the DPWH-10 regional director to consider the height and elevation of the J.R. Borja Bridge as it might affect the total physical development of the proposed river boulevard project of the city government.

The river boulevard development is a priority project conceptualized by Mayor Jaraula as part of his thrusts and vision to boost tourism-related activities along the Cagayan de Oro River through the construction of a walking bridge with a cafAc station, a river boulevard, a high-rise fountain in the middle of the river, a multi-level rotunda building that would house a mini-library and museum.

The development plans of identified high-impact infrastructure projects both from the local government and the national government will be presented to local officials Monday next week for them to come up with an integrated city development plan.

The integration of plans is seen to make more manageable and practical for both the city government and DPWH to identify priority projects and to source local or national funds.

Among the priority infrastructure projects mentioned by the mayor include the construction of a flyover at crossing Macanhan area in Barangay Carmen in anticipation of traffic congestion once the Carmen-Macasandig Bridge, the city's fifth bridge, operates.

Mayor Jaraula also wants an integrated plan of the city's vital drainage system after noting that some major roads and streets of the city have easily submerged with water from overflowing open canals, creeks and clogged drainage during heavy downpour.

Among the critical drainage network system that needs immediate upgrading and/or renovation is the stretch along J.V. Seriaña Street-City Hospital area in Barangay Carmen and the national highway fronting Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC) portion in Lapasan, the mayor added. (Press release)

Medical Center goes high-tech

MEETING the increasing technological demand of times, Cagayan de Oro Medical Center (COMC) has put in place the latest interactive tools for customer comfort and knowledge-enrichment of its medical staff.

COMC has an existing Wi-Fi network with wide access points providing internal coverage within its two main buildings, while doctors and nurses are learning more in ways that have gone high-tech.

"It's a total comfort. I can check e-mails, surf the Internet while waiting for my wife who is undergoing a routine check-up," said Roland Libanan, while waiting at the hospital's canteen, one of the two central Wi-Fi stations.

The second Wi-Fi access zone at the hospital's new building is powered from a wireless Internet hub called the COMC Virtual Library. Here, doctors, nurses and other medical staff can access latest medical literatures: journals, research papers, references and reliable information on certain types of drugs.

"Doctors and nurses come here to browse the latest in their respective fields. Whether in medicine or nursing, the Virtual Library offers diverse information for the medical staff to make use of," said Arian Edullantes, Cyber Cafe administrator.

"New information on specific types of illnesses can be searched in medical databases around the world. Important information are also available on new drugs, including their side-effects." said Edullantes.

For nurses like Girly Tabigue, COMC's Virtual Library is a vital entry point for getting regular updates on the nursing profession. (Press Release)

Little Bangkok turns 1!
By Chef Ed Dychauco

MANY, many years ago my cousin, Engineer Renato Sia, son of Mr. and Mrs. Juan Sia, decided after his graduation from college to pursue further studies in Chinese language. He came back a couple of years after with a girlfriend in tow, Penapa who eventually became his wife. They are now blessed with two beautiful kids Yutchacorn (or Pete-pete as we fondly call him) and Pawinacorn, his younger sister.

Penapa or Lefang (her Chinese name) is from Thailand, a beautiful country of wonderful people. Thailand is also filled with delicious and exotic food. I was in Thailand way back in 1992 for a vacation and I find the place to be very "Thai." I mean, the culture, the language, the way they dress, etc. it is so Asian yet so amazingly world-class! People are very hospitable and kind. Although most of them speak very little English, I manage to communicate with them using the universal language using the hands, facial expressions and of course, the calculator (!) when I go shopping!

When people learn that Lefang is from Thailand, they keep on asking her to open a truly authentic Thai restaurant. And being away from your country, I guess one will miss the most is the FOOD! Because she is not a real good cook, though she CAN cook good-tasting authentic home meals, she decided to do the next best thing, and that is to sell Thai foods, delicacies and the like. So with Renato or Rene (as we call him) they decided to open "Little Bangkok" last December 14, 2006!

Not only did she enjoy having "her" foods, but she also educated and opened the eyes and taste buds of many Cagayanons to Thai foods and delicacies! At Little Bangkok, one can enjoy shopping at this tiny store, which is full of goodies from Thailand. Most sought-after and sellable items include the following: Thai Sauces like Green Curry Paste (Wow!), Tom Yam Paste (Incredible!), Tamarind Paste (Fantastic!), Pad Thai Paste, Fish Sauce, Mushroom Vegetarian Sauce, Dried Chili Powder, Lime Juice Powder and the many other "Hot" sauces! For the delicacies, Dilis (whether plain or spicy (Yummy!) is their best seller! Others include the Crispy Grilled Pork, Preserved Tamarind, Spicy Chewy Squid, Pad Thai Noodles, Ranong Tea, Jasmine Tea, Mangosteen and Durian Chips (How Exotic!).

Nutritious and refreshing Tipco Juices are also on sale and come in different flavors like Carrot, Mixed Vegetables, Guava, Beetroot and many others. Little Bangkok also sells Women's Bags and Accessories like earrings, bangles, key chains, stingray wallets and one-of-a-kind Thai decorations.

Hanjin wins contract for Laguindingan Airport project

Cagayan de Oro City – Korean construction firm Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) has been awarded the contract for the construction of the P7.853 billion (US$167.09 million) Laguindingan Airport Development Project.

Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar S. Moreno confirmed he has been informed by the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) last week that indeed Hanjin won the bidding for the airport’s civil works.

“DOTC informed me the Korean Eximbank financing the project has awarded the civil works for the airport to Hanjin,” Moreno said.

The LADP complex covers around 400 hectares, with a substantial portion being donated by the Ayala Corporation. It would eventually replace the Cagayan de Oro (Lumbia) airport, and the Iligan (Balo-i) airport.

Both airports have terrain restrictions that rule out both night flights and wide-body aircraft. Both are elevated and frequently experience flight cancellations due to inclement weather, with a number of fatal crashes already occurring at Balo-I airport.

DOTC sources said three Korean construction firms –Hanjin , Samsung and Daewoo had initially signified their intention to bid for the project but that Samsung eventually dropped out of the final bidding, leaving Hanjin and Daewoo.

HHIC is not a new to Misamis Oriental and Northern Mindanao. In its previous incarnation as the Hanil Development Co., Ltd. it was responsible for the construction of the Iligan-Cagayan-Butuan Road (ICBR) in 1973 which is still cited as one the country’s best highways today. Hanil changed its name to Hanjin Construction Co., Ltd. on Mar. 12, 1994.

The company website of HHIC originally posted the following story on its URL: http://www.hanjinsc.com/english/sub/culture/cm_05main_01.asp?num=60 but the story was only confirmed by government officials this week:

“On the 12th, Hanjin Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC) announced that it won the Laguindingan Airport development project (USD 106.2 million) in the Philippines. The project, through which all airport facilities including the 2.5km-long runway, passenger terminal, and cargo terminal will be built, will be funded by the Export-Import Bank of Korea and EDCF. Construction will begin early next year.

As a gateway to Mindanao, one of the three main islands of the Philippines, the new airport will be located 30km northeast of Cagayan downtown and north of Mindanao. It will serve as the replacement of the old Cagayan Airport.

Since 1973, HHIC has successfully completed a total of 70 development projects including the Manila LRT (Light Rail Transit) system and Davao International Airport. It has been the No.1 foreign construction company in the Philippines.

At present, the company is launching 9 development projects including Bacolod Airport, Bohol-Bayon Dam/Canal, Metro-Illy Road, Catubic Dam and is developing a dockyard in Subic Bay.”

HHIC is also the contractor for the construction of the site construction, taxiway, and passenger terminal Incheon International Airport completed in November 1992.

Although HHIC only ranks 12th in Korea and 98th globally in terms of construction engineering capacity, HH is one of Korea’s Top 100 companies, and is held in high esteem globally as the first shipbuilding company in Korea. It is one of the world’s Top 10 shipbuilding companies and has been cited as the World’s Outstanding Shipbuilder for the 15th straight year since 1992.

On top of the Laguindingan airport project, HHIC recently announced its intention to build a US$2 billion shipyard complex at a 300 hectare site in the Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental that would be twice the size of its Subic shipyard in Zambales.

Hanjin President Jeong Sup Shim made the disclosure during a courtesy call on President Arryo in Malacañang last November 27, 2007. The project is expected to create some 30,000 new jobs for engineers, welders, and steel fabricators.

Jeong said construction of the shipyard would start early next year and be operational by 2010.

Besides shipbuilding and repair; infrastructure, architecture and engineering; Hanjin also undertakes plants and logistics equipment manufacturing.

HHIC’s announcement was also independently confirmed by Korean Eximbank (The Export-Import Bank of Korea) Engineering & Environment Advisory Office at its own website: http://www.koreaexim.go.kr/en/fservice/m01/s04_03.jsp

Fair prices at Plaza Fair (http://mindanao.wowphilippines.com/cagayandeoro/2007/10/30/fair-prices-at-plaza-fair/)

MOTHERS browsing for dresses, children looking for toys. Everybody who is in a buying mood is almost everywhere, wanting to have a hold of the on-sale items… These scenes are a normal sight inside Plaza Fair Cagayan de Oro, the one-stop-shop store known for its fair price.

For 15 years, Plaza Fair has never failed to attract shoppers, young and old alike. Much more now that the Christmas season is up in the air.

Post comments here on President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s grant of pardon to former President Joseph Estrada.

Plaza Fair bigwig Danny Velasco proudly says Plaza Fair has maintained its No. 1 position in Cagayan de Oro.

“We know Cagayan de Oro customers, their needs and wants,” Mr. Velasco says, who is in the city to personally market the store’s Christmas and Halloween promotional activities.

THE FINALS: M. LHUILLIER TAKES GAME ONE, 76-75 (http://forums.interbasket.net/showpost.php?p=131858&postcount=113)

CAGAYAN DE ORO – Ronald Capati hit a three-point shot from top of the key with nine seconds left to lift defending champion M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu City past Holcim Pryce Pharma-MisOr, 76-75, and take Game One of the 2007 Mindanao Visayas Basketball Association (MVBA) Second Conference Finals Wednesday evening at the Xavier University Gym.

Both teams then called their final timeouts. MisOr guard Anton Villoria drove strong to the hoop and with the defense collapsing on him dished off to an open Nat Cruz beneath the goal. Suddenly, Marlon Basco came from nowhere to block Cruz’ twisting shot and preserve the win.

M. Lhuillier averted another late game collapse. Erecting their biggest lead, 72-62, with still five minutes to play, M. Lhuillier allowed MisOr to unload 13 unanswered points capped by back-to-back baskets by Cruz with 1:44 left and MisOr ahead, 75-72.

Woodrow Enriquez managed to eke in a free throw at the 1:33 mark to close in, 73-75. A failed MisOr offensive led to Capati’s game-winning heroics. “I put a lot of heart in the shot,” said Capati who ripped off his jersey at the buzzer in celebration. “I popped out and got the ball from Woodrow and then saw my defender (Cruz) far away and the shot clock running so I decided to take it.” The College of Saint Benilde alumnus finished with nine points.

Game Two of the series is scheduled for tomorrow at the New Cebu Coliseum with M. Lhuillier of Michel Lhuillier and Coach Raul Alcoseba gunning for their third MVBA championship in four conferences of the league sanctioned by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (BAP-SBP) and supported by ML Kwarta Padala, Nature’s Spring, Accel, Reva Sandals, Gameface.Ph and Nike Basketball. If needed, Game Three will be on Saturday, still at the Coliseum.

Bruce Dacia led M. Lhuillier with 16 points followed by Enriquez with 14. Cruz paced MisOr with 20 followed by Villoria with 18. MisOr sorely missed the services of Mindanao MVP Lowell Briones who sat out the game with a fever.

MisOr of Gov. Oscar Moreno and Coach Bong Abad has a tough but attainable task ahead of them. Meeting in last year’s Second Conference finals, MisOr “stole” Game Two in Cebu, 96-84, after losing Game One at XU, 87-75. M. Lhuillier however hung on to claim Game Three and the championship, 79-71.

Meanwhile, the MVBA Christmas Tournament’s opening has been moved forward a day to December 17, still at the Coliseum. Confirmed to join are M. Lhuillier, MisOr, Cebu Landmaster-Mandaue, Arthro Kontra Arthritis-Cebu and guest teams from Pagadian City and Tagaytay City. The tournament will run until December 21.

How They Scored:

M. LHUILLIER-CEBU (76) – Dacia 16, Enriquez 14, Gatumbato 10, Capati 9, Padilla 8, Cavan 8, Basco 4, Rodriguez 3, Caputolan 2, Latonio 2, Aying 0, Bat-og 0.

HOLCIM PRYCE-MISOR (75) – Cruz 20, Villoria 18, Tagupa 11, Moreño 10, Abadia 7, Nailon 7, Sevilla 2, Apepe 0, Concha 0, Numeran 0, Sanchez 0, Jabagat 0.

Period Scores: 22-20, 42-36, 59-52, 76-75.

(M. Lhuillier leads series, 1-0)

http://bp3.blogger.com/_turZx0C20_Q/R0d4sEb2rLI/AAAAAAAAAFc/mQBiz4URWzY/s320/100_0846.JPG

What started as a small, closed-type credit union, the First Community Cooperative (FICCO) is now into helping cooperative rural banks get back on their feet.

The cooperative rural banks are supposed to be the bank of cooperatives. But in a reversal of roles, FICCO, a primary cooperative based in Cagayan de Oro City, has so far helped two cooperative banks, namely: the Misamis Occidental Cooperative Bank (MOCB) and the Cooperative Bank of Davao del Sur (CBDS).

The MOCB, which was closed by the BSP in 2003, was actually about to be liquidated by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation (PDIC). In fact, the PDIC has already paid many of the small depositors. But, at the instance of then CDA Region 10 Director Manuela Pelaez, FICCO, along with Clarin National High School MPC and Paglaum MPC of Misamis Occidental, Coop Bank of Misamis Oriental, Oro Integrated Coop, Del Monte coops, PFCCO-ML of Cagayan de Oro and DEARBC of Bukidnon pooled resources together to infuse some P 12.5 million in fresh funds. FICCO’s contribution is P 9.4 million. Thus, MOCB was reopened last 16 April 2007.

This unprecedented move of resurrecting a dead bank is anchored purely on the desire to help a distressed coop, as well as the bank’s depositors. Getting some returns on the investment may take sometime considering the bank’s recent history and hazy image.

Responding to another call of assistance, FICCO also infused P 10 million in fresh funds to the capital-deficient Cooperative Bank of Davao del Sur (CBDS). Laden with huge past due loans and continuing losses, the bank was about to be closed by the BSP in 2001. Under a new leadership, the stable coops of Southern Mindanao, namely, the USPD coops, Bukidnon Coop Bank, SAMULCO, Silangan MPC, Panabo MPC, Kapalong MPC, Agdao MPC, BCS, JAT coop, DASURBACO and a few others infused funds to CBDS. But despite the infusion, the bank was unable to exploit its potentials until FICCO came into the picture.

FICCO saw a lot of promise in CBDS’ micro-finance programs that provide loans to very small entrepreneurs and LGU personnel. The former are considered by many as non-bankable. FICCO hopes that its involvement will hasten the emancipation of this usually neglected sector. Uplifting their economic status and bringing them to the mainstream is a challenge FICCO will always take. It is in this area that the coop has a lot of practice.

Other coop banks, whose requests for assistance are now being reviewed by FICCO, include the Coop Bank of Lanao Norte (CBLN), the Coop Bank of Surigao del Sur (CBSS), and the Coop Bank of Camiguin (CBC).

That a primary cooperative, which started with only 17 members and P 26.30 in initial capital, has become a supporter of coop banks is indeed a remarkable feat.

FICCO actually started in 1954 as the Ateneo Credit Union, based at the then Ateneo de Cagayan, now Xavier University. Up to 1970, ACU was a closed-type coop with no more than 200 members and P 184,000 in assets. In that year, it opened itself to the Cagayan de Oro community, and after ten years of hard selling, it was able to increase its membership to almost 1,000 and its assets to P 2.8 million. The name was changed to FICCCO (First Community Credit Coop) in 1978.

The next ten years (1981-1990) was the take-off decade of FICCCO. As of 31 December 1990, the coop membership reached 6,000 and total resources stood at P 33 million. In 1992, the coop turned multi-purpose and changed its name to FICCO, dropping “Credit” from its name. It also started branching out in that year. By the end of 2000, FICCO has already opened eight branches (4 in Cagayan de Oro and one each in 4 towns of Misamis Oriental), increased its membership to 24,000 and its assets to P 454 million. It also developed some five hectares of land into a housing subdivision benefiting close to 300 members.

If those accomplishments surprised many, even from within FICCO, what unfolded during that last six years and 9 months astounds many more. During this period, FICCO opened 18 more offices (5 more in Misamis Oriental, 2 in Camiguin, 6 in Bukidnon, 2 in Lanao Norte, 1 in Butuan City, 1 in Agusan del Sur and 1 in Davao City). Resources shoots to P 2.25 billion and membership topped 102,000.

What propelled its growth is actually its unique culture that upholds or emphasizes quality service, prudent stewardship, integrity, transparency, sacrifice, low-cost/high return operations, and volunteerism among others. This culture created a positive image of the coop that converted the FICCO name into a brand. So much so that by the time FICCO opens a branch in a particular community, there are already several hundred of its residents who are already members of the nearest FICCO branch.

The commitment of the leaders, personnel and members of FICCO brings out a synergetic environment that propels its continuing growth. An average of 1,500 people joins FICCO every month and the average monthly growth in assets is P 35 million.
The high satisfaction among the members is “infectious.” Through word of mouth, the FICCO aura spreads within and among communities. It is this kind of public acceptance that positions FICCO to become a ‘rescuer’ of coop banks. (ibdaba).

An overview of Cagayan de Oro City

Cagayan de Oro (CdO) City is located on the Island of Mindanao. Don’t let that scare you off, Mindanao is not as dangerous as what you hear. Actually, there are only a few isolated areas of Mindanao that you should avoid, and Cagayan de Oro is not one of them! Cagayan de Oro is located on the Northwest coast of Mindanao, just a stone’s throw from Camiguin Island, and an overnight Ferry ride from Cebu City.

I have visited CdO many times, and I like the place. In terms of living, I would personally not like to live there due to some things like congested traffic (although if you read below, it seems that this problem might clear up soon). But, for visitors, CdO has many things of interest. I particularly like CdO for the shopping opportunities (more than what I can find here in Davao) and also there are some excellent restaurants to enjoy in CdO.

For this column, I interviewed our very own LiP columnist, AmericanLola. AmericanLola has lived in CdO for five years now. I asked AmericanLola if she could give us a price range for houses that an expat might want to rent in CdO. She says that at the low end, houses can be found for about P6,000 per month, and the high end goes to just about any level you might want. Right next door to AmericanLola’s place, they are fixing up a rental house that will be marketed for P100,000 per month! Wow, I bet that is a nice place!

Next I asked AmericanLola what kind of amenities can be found for expats in CdO. She tells me that just about anything you might want or need can be found in town! Let’s have a look at a few of her recommendations:

Malls: Limket Kai/Robinson’s, Gaisano, Ororama, and SM.
Several Fitness centers: Clark Hatch being the best known. The swimming pools at Pryce Plaza Hotel and at Xavier Estates are both open to the public for an entry fee.
Movies: Yep, at all the malls.
Restaurants: there are a LOT of excellent new restaurants in CDO, as well as coffee shops and barbecue places. Our favorites are: Countryside Steak House (American style food, good serving size for the price), Ramen Tei (reasonably priced Japanese), Green Haven (Mongolian BBQ), Laguna Cafe (Manila style Filipino food, nice atmosphere), Candy’s (very good food and amazing desserts!) Roadhouse Cafe (Bob’s favorite), Turquoise (Turkish food, very nice!), Philius Fogg (British and International), a couple Italian, several Middle Eastern, and all the usual chain restaurants.

Wow! What a selection! I have to say, I do like Roadhouse Cafe, as AmericanLola says. Another of my favorites in CdO is Countryside Steakhouse, their steaks are excellent!

As a test of the cost of living, I asked AmericanLola how much is charged locally for a Lechon Manok (roasted chicken) as it is a staple in the Philippines. She says that it is P135, which is about $3.35 at today’s exchange rate. AmericanLola says that due to her recent trip to Manila, she now realizes just how low the cost of living in CdO is!

AmericanLola goes on to tell me that the roads in CdO are well maintained, and very good for the most part. She does acknowledge that traffic congestion is a problem, but that two new bridges are under construction, and she feels that these will go a long way toward alleviating the traffic problem in the City. Let’s hope! For transportation, depending on where you are going and the distance you are traveling, you can avail of services from tricycles, jeepneys, taxis or buses. CdO City has a working airport with many flights passing through every day.

In addition, AmericanLola says that CdO is a friendly place for foreigners, and they are seeing more and more foreigners in town all the time, which is a good sign! Government offices in town are good. Last time AmericanLola went to renew her driver’s license the whole process only took an hour, including getting the laminated card! When I first moved to the Philippines, it took about 8 months before I got my actual laminated driver’s license! This is real progress, and I can confirm that I had a similar experience in Davao last year too.

People are optimistic of the opening of the Gingoog-Claveria-Villanueva road. According to the DPWH, the Gingoog side of the project is almost complete except for the 100 meter gap second approach of the Palapay Bridge in Binakalan, Gingoog City. According to Governor Oscar Moreno, the new road will cut travel time between Gingoog and Cagayan de Oro by 50 percent. That’s an affirmative since motorist don’t have to travel from Gingoog to Balingoan then toward Cagayan de Oro. The only question is what kind of road and is the route relatively safe for motorists? :ohno:

40 US-based property developers to
invest in RP’s tourism-linked projects

By Roger Garcia
Properties Editor

U.S.-based leisure- and entertainment-property developers have renewed their interest in developing world-class resorts and retirement havens in the country as they declared the readiness of the Philippines and its enormous potential to become a major participant in the ever-growing global tourism business.

In a roundtable discussion with the BusinessMirror editorial and research team, Leon Katz, CEO of Global Investments and Capital Corp., the business matching arm of the Asian International Real Estate Expo and Conference (Aireec), together with other foreign conference leaders, the group revealed that about 40 US developers, most of whom are owners of marquee brands in the global tourism sector which cater to “high net-worth clients” in Asia, Europe, the United States and the Middle East are set to visit and inspect potential tourism destinations in Central and Southern Philippines.

Topping the list are properties located in Cebu, Boracay, Palawan and some parts of Mindanao that include Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

The group is scheduled to arrive “as early as February next year,” said Aireec spokesman Romeo J. Pajarillo.

“This development came in the heels of the recent holding of the Aireec 2007 in Manila last week,” Pajarillo said. “The event [Aireec] has created and has built up serious interest among world-class developers and marketers.”

Anthony Macaluso, a leading realtor in the United States, together with Susan Barlin, the Philippines’ special envoy for investment and tourism promotions and lead organizer of this year’s convention and expo, told the BusinessMirror that leisure and tourism development will definitely set the pace for the Philippines joining the global contest to capture the ever-increasing number of retirees and so-called baby boomers.

Macaluso said these developers are now preparing for the millions of US “baby boomers,” including retiring Fil-Americans who would like to retire in tropical countries such as Panama, other South American countries and the Philippines, in particular.

Macaluso said the Philippines is the “best-kept secret” in the area of tourism and leisure business. Proper infrastructure and world-class development combined with its natural and human resource will definitely give its Asian neighbors a run for their money,” Macaluso stressed.

“As this happens, the Philippines should venture into nation-branding and should increase further its efforts in global marketing as well,” he said.

“Its a double-bladed approach as this [marketing and promotions], coupled with the nation-branding efforts, will not only attract tourists and visitors, but will likewise encourage leading world-class developers to invest in the Philippines’ tourism-development projects,” he said.

Pajarillo, meanwhile, announced that a large foreign developer and an owner of a Philippine island are completing negotiations to develop the local property into a resort.

The letter of intent was delivered on December 13 by the potential buyer to the island owner to indicate that it was serious with its offer.

The developer indicated that it would spend some $120 million to develop a vacation resort.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – The local Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) office said that 60% of transportation in this city and 75% in Iligan City have been paralyzed by the transport strike staged by militant jeepney drivers and operators Thursday.

Mandangan Darimbang – director of the LTFRB city office – said that they were able to mitigate the impact of the strike with the deployment of alternative transportation for the riding public.

"Based on our monitoring, only 60% in Cagayan de oro was paralyzed this morning and 75% in Iligan City. The whole of Misamis Occidental and Bukidnon were not affected at all," said Darimbang.

Only the militant Solidarity transport alliance (Starex) joined the strike in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan cities. Other moderate groups said they will await the decision of LTFRB on their petition for fare hike due next week.

Darimbang said they were already mulling over increasing regular jeepney fare by up to P1 in Northern Mindanao. GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/72710/Transport-strike-felt-in-Cagayan-de-Oro-Iligan-cities)

Mayor Jaraula urged Kagay-anons to plant trees

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula urged all Kagay-anons to plant trees in support to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) -10 “Green Philippines Program, Trees for Life: 20M seedlings for planting and nurturing” which made its last stop at Sitio Taguanao in Barangay Indahag, this city.

Mayor Jaraula stressed the importance of the government’s massive reforestation program to the participants in the tree planting activity during its launching held recently at the Kagay-an Resort.

He cited that tree planting is the best way to protect the environment even as he urged participants to take good care of the planted tree seedlings.
In fact, the city government is keen in developing a 10-hectare area of the Kagay-an Resort as a nature park where eight hectares will be planted with fruit- bearing trees while the remaining two hectares will be planted with flowers, Jaraula said.

He added that the local government units must be at the frontline in efforts along environmental protection and that the city government of Cagayan de Oro is rallying behind the agency’s call to save Mother Earth.
The project was launched in the middle of October this year at Mapawa Nature Park in Barangay Cugman, this city, where a total of 50,000 forest seedlings were planted. (City Information Office)

Guys, have you been to Kalabira Cave, Indahag within our city? Hmmm I bet you know that this cave was declared yesterday by DOT 10 as the new tourist destination in Cagayan de Oro.

Anyway, this is a majestic cave and very historical on part of CDO. Here we can find the prehistoric CDO, so that it's older than the pre-hispanic Macahambus cave. We can even sight the view of the city and even Laguindingan if the weather is good.

Oro joins ICT hubs in organizing national body (http://http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/14/bus/oro.joins.ict.hubs.in.organizing.national.body.html)

THE information and communications technology (ICT) organizations of Bacolod and Negros Occidental, Iloilo, Davao, Cagayan De Oro, Cebu and Iligan formed last November, the Philippine Federation of ICT Organizations.

The group aims to collectively work for ICT-readiness and competitiveness and promote their respective areas in the Philippine Cyberservices Corridor.

The meeting, hosted by the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (CEDFIT) represented by its executive director Bonifacio Belen, called for the other ICT organizations outside of the NCR.

These organizations include the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for ICT and IT Schools Network of Negros Occidental Incorporated, the Iloilo Federation for Information Technology, the Davao ICT, Incorporated and the Iligan Information and Communication Technology and E-Commerce Council.

Joining the organizational meeting was the new Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) Chair Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III, named Philippine's outsourcing and off-shoring (O&O) czar recently by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who encouraged the ICT local leaders to organize themselves in order to help each other and to have a stronger voice.

Chua reiterated the value of private sector-led efforts that enjoy the support of all sectors working together.

The members agreed to invite ICT councils and organizations of other cities, provinces and regions like General Santos City and Urdaneta City.

Everyone is in the consensus that the support of CICT for the efforts and initiatives of the federation is very important.

Aside from making the necessary preparation in the establishment of the body, the members shall soon be preparing for the e-Services Conference in 2008 and to allocate for a bigger regional space in the expo and better promotional activities for the regional ICT hubs. (Press Release)

Greenwich celebrates differently! (http://http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/14/feat/greenwich.celebrates.differently!.html)

TIRED of the same old Christmas gatherings year by year? Has Christmas parties with friends and officemates become a series of boring and predictable "pancit and barbeque" affairs? Or are you looking for something different to usher in the festive season?

Greenwich, the Philippines' Pizza Chain, livens up the spirit and puts an interesting twist this season with the Greenwich Deliciously Merry Feast.

Composed of the first of its kind Pizza de Lechon, the Deliciously Merry Feast guarantees to make every gathering a unique experience.

"Greenwich has always remained committed to catering to its target market, the young independent adults. Understanding their need for exploration, their non-conformist attitude and their natural craving for new things, we are dedicated to giving them what they want, how they want it, says Greenwich's Media and PR Head, Luis U. Velasco III.

The company is the first and only restaurant chain that introduced such bold flavors as the popular Sisig pizza, Mango Fiesta and last Christmas' Red Egg Royale Pizza.

Barkadas in the offices, as well as those having their annual family and college reunions can now bring out the joy in their get-togethers by including Greenwich's Deliciously Merry Feast among the food they can quickly serve and enjoy this holiday season.

Greenwich has three branches in Cagayan de Oro: Ororama Cogon, Limketkai and SM City.

Cake decorating the Wilton method (http://http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/12/14/life/cake.decorating.the.wilton.method.html)
By Abigail Chee Kee-Malalis

JUST recently, a group of cake enthusiasts here in Cagayan de Oro and nearby cities were given the taste of cake decorating in a method not ordinarily being taught.

The Wilton method of cake decorating, designed for beginners, has its origin at Illinois in Chicago, USA. It is a curriculum-based method which includes books and Wilton Kit to make cake decorating more accessible to cake enthusiasts.

The first batch of students from Dipolog, Iligan, Bukidnon, and Cagayan de Oro gathered at the Grand Caprice restaurant simply to acquire knowledge on cake decorating with YSU Marketing sponsoring the event.

Wilton Industries started from Wilton Enterprises that began in 1929. It has successfully united four distinctive consumer product companies whose strategic focus is product innovation and quality.

Wilton is a recognized leader in the development of baking, cake decorating, cookie and candy making products.

It markets more than 2,100 products to 107 countries worldwide. Its annual Wilton Yearbook of Cake Decorating features dozens of designs for every occasion complete with decorating instructions.

In 1974, Wilton formalized class programs through comprehensive instructor training.

The Wilton Method assumes no cake decorating experience from its students. Each lesson starts with the basics and builds continuously. Wilton Instructors teach by the book because Wilton's mandate is that every course, in every city follows the outlined procedures.

In the Philippines, Wilton Method classes are taught in Manila at the Living Well at the Podium, in Davao at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies and in Cagayan de Oro through YSU Marketing. (Press Release)

Ravanera: Cooperative capital of the nation (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2007/10/11/oped/orlando.r..ravanera.regional.director.cda.10.html)
By Orlando R. Ravanera
Regional Director, CDA-10

IN REGION 10, we do not just commemorate October as a Cooperative Month: we have good reasons to celebrate!

First, it is of due notice that Northern Mindanao is the bedrock of cooperativism and home to cooperative trail-blazers who have been entered into the Cooperative Hall of Fame.

It is where the South East Asia Rural Social Leadership Institute (Searsolin), an internationally renowned institute committed to the formation of rural development leaders for sustainable development, was founded.

It is also home of Mindanao Alliance of Self-Help Societies-Southern Philippines Educational Center for Cooperatives (MASS-SPECC), which is serving 296 primaries and 3 federations all over Mindanao.

It is where the consumer-members of so-called electric cooperatives (ECs) are strongly advocating to rectify legal and social flaws in the existence of these ECs by their registration with CDA and the recognition of the consumer-members as co-owners.

Secondly, Northern Mindanao is increasingly becoming the cooperative capital of the country as it takes stock of its role and contribution to our national economic growth and development.

Our regional office of the Cooperative Development Authority has taken pains in looking at the details, aptly showing that the capital built, savings kept by some the cooperators in the region have actually translated to about 10 percent of the Gross Regional Domestic Product. Of the 100 top cooperatives in the country, eleven are from region 10.

The cooperatives in Northern Mindanao have exposed to the open economy P5.8 billion to the region's P60-billion economy, provided more than 6,000 regular jobs and thousands of economic opportunities to micro and small entrepreneurs who have availed of low-interest credit services.

Thirdly, it is in this Region that the cooperatives have actually taken a prominent role in our financial business. Such happened when successful cooperatives in the region pooled their resources to rescue the beleaguered Cooperative Bank Misamis Occidental, which is now resurrected from receivership.

Not allowing a kindred cooperative bank to close down, the rehabilitation process was initiated by 9 cooperatives four years ago and coming to fruition after years of determination and perseverance in complying with all the requirements, including the unselfish act of pooling their resources together.

In so doing, advanced an alternative credit system for the poor, drawing them into the mainstream of development processes, in pursuance of my administration's thrusts of job generation, food security and ecological integrity.

Our kudos to these nine cooperatives who have exemplified the principles of cooperativism to the highest degree, namely, the more than 2-billion peso First Integrated Credit Cooperative (FICCO), the Cooperative Bank of Misamis Oriental, the Philippine Federation of Credit Cooperative- Mindanao League, Allied Services Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Northern Mindanao, Del Monte Employees Credit Cooperative, Oro Integrated Cooperative, Del Monte Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries Cooperative, Paglaum Multi-Purpose Cooperative, and the Clarin National High School Multi-Purpose Cooperative.

All told, our people are binding themselves together by pooling their resources together through their cooperatives and by so doing, become our strong allies in combating poverty. Indeed, the people united can never be defeated, even by poverty.

If the root cause of poverty is the powerlessness of the people then the only remedial measure is to empower them through their cooperatives.

The cooperation among cooperatives and societal concerns have also been exemplified by another group of cooperatives in the case of the distressed Mindanao Savings Cooperative which has been rehabilitated through the unselfish efforts of the National Confederation of Cooperatives, MASS-SPECC and the Federation of People's Sustainable Development Cooperative (FPSDC).

By saving a cooperative which acts as financial intermediary of the poor, it has in fact been given life to thousands of economic activities in the grassroots that prove to be vital in our journey towards pro-people development.

In sum, it can aptly be said that cooperatives have been successful in drawing the marginalized sectors into the mainstream of development process, bonding together productive members of our citizenry who contribute significantly to our economy.

We have realized that cooperativism has come of age, not only as a vehicle of development but as a tool of empowerment. It is the pathway to make people more productive, becoming revenue-makers for our government.

No less than Her Excellency, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has congratulated the contribution of the cooperative movement in Northern Mindanao for nourishing the economy and for championing the cause of sustainable development, in a letter sent to CDA Region 10 recently from the Office of the President.

Creating A Real Difference (http://philippinecooperative.blogspot.com/2007/03/creating-real-difference.html)

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/105_0503.jpg

That noble message in bold prominent letters was etched on the annual General Assembly reports as the dominant theme for 2007 of the industry’s number one and biggest open-community type multi-purpose cooperative. A quite bold and rightfully-deserved theme for a once insignificant credit union that now celebrates its 52nd year of existence.

How surprisingly refreshing to chance upon a little bright bloom from the current grisly mire of negativism pervading the social and political landscape of a beleaguered country teeming with punditry that caters in wholesale unproductive rhetoric about what is wrong with the country in particular, and with the rest of the world in general. Abundant postulations, prognostications, detailed analytical dismantling of most anything and everything seen, but with hardly any constructive prognoses and actuations that will begin to address the gargantuan concerns besetting the citizenry, on a case by each case, one person at a time basis. Yet from very inauspicious beginnings in July 8, 1954, birthed as the ACCU (Ateneo Cooperative Credit Union) in the then idyllic city of Cagayan de Oro, located in Northern Mindanao, and commencing with share capital of only 26.30 pesos, this community uplift undertaking has blossomed into something that will stagger even the most vocal and virulent among those who peddle negativism daily in the local blogosphere. This multipurpose cooperative, now famously known as FICCO (First Community Cooperative, and now designed and registered to serve the entire country) has metamorphosed in to an almost 2 billion peso organization, with about 90,000 members at the end of 2006; and forecasted to register in 2007 2.5 billion in assets and 110,333 members, with increases at 32% and 24% respectively. And to illustrate the redoubtable clout and deep community penetration of this undertaking, it carried in its books total loans of 1.5 billion pesos at the end of 2006, and projected at about 2 billion pesos for 2007. It is good to note that for 2006 loan releases amounted to 2.1 billion pesos. But is it profitable? Can regular folks – teachers, drivers, market vendors, small entrepreneurs, etc, be trusted not only to faithfully follow a savings regimen, but also be counted upon to make good on loan accommodations? Suffice it to say that the cooperative has always been stellarly profitable, and the last year was no exception.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/03-11-07_1019.jpg

For 2006, it registered net surplus for distribution to the tune of 118 million pesos, 70% of which were distributed to members as interests for deposit accounts, dividends on share capital, and patronage refunds to loan clients. Typically, 95% of the 70% are devoted to interests and dividends, while 5% for patronage refunds. It was therefore with eager anticipation that I had my passbooks updated after an absence and dormancy of accounts for over a year. Needless to state, the increments were rather substantial, definitely better than what one would get for funds invested in other private financial institutions. As an active member of FICCO since the 70’s, one finds some difficulty being quiet and reticent about the effectiveness and feasibility of this collective effort in its avowed purposes aimed at poverty alleviation, with emphasis on both development of a propensity to save and the integrity and mature commitment in discharging responsibilities with regard to credit accommodations. As an equivalent shout at the rooftops, one cannot imagine the cluelessness and seeming ignorance of many pundits, government technocrats, and even in your typical highly-intelligent but dismally reality-aware pundits who ceaselessly harangue the blogosphere with endless rhetoric about what is wrong with the country and what should be done according to their idealized analyses. Duh! Slow down and smell the coffee. You, too, may be able to participate in something constructive however puny or powerless one may feel about the overwhelmingly pervasive poverty conditions of the country. It is never that utterly hopeless. Most times meaningful solutions are within arm’s length of most everybody. It does require great humility, and some real sweat equity, to climb down from one’s high perch of empty rhetoric, down to the levels of real actions, sometimes dirty, or insignificant or inconsequential, and do not derive much public notice to stoke one’s egotistical designs. My exhortation? Contribute toward creating a real difference. In your own little ways.

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/03-11-07_1309.jpg

UPDATE The weekend dated March 11th witnessed the 11th and final general assembly comprising the members of the cooperative banking with the main office, held in a cavernous gym in the city’s polytechnic school. It was a rather well-attended affair which proudly reflected the over 10,000 main office clients. For the sake of convenience and to accommodate the over 90,000 members scattered throughout many areas of Mindanao, it has been deemed proper after all these many years to hold different general assembly meetings in different locations. A truly admirable concept to bring cooperativism wherever it is needed. And now fully cognizant of its economic clout, which saw loan releases for the past year far exceeding those granted by any financial institutions in the area, the organization is poised to exert some political clout through the party-list system of representation which has become commonplace in the country. Imagine getting some representation in the national body of congress to promote and protect the interests of cooperatives and credit unions. Unable to seek recognition of its own sectoral representation for the current election cycle, the cooperative has decided to focus on throwing support for one already duly recognized – The Democratic Alliance of Mindanaoans for Good Governance, or DAMGO, the Bisayan term for dream. Democracy being a rather unpredictable and at times messy affair, the assembly which was scheduled from 8 am to 12 noon went way passed schedule; and though the gym felt like it was filled to the rafters, scores of people milled outside. The much-awaited climax for the affair was the distribution of dividends which was purposely left as the last item for the agenda. And getting almost 11% p.a. for one’s investments was well worth the wait.

Wow...an dami na palang subdivision projects sa CDO. It's really becoming a residence of choice not only for Mindanaoan's but for foreigners and people from Luzon/Visayas.

Yes, I was impressed about the beauty, peace and order of CDO. I was raised in Luzon, but I have been living abroad for almost 26 years now. My nephew migrated to CDO 15 years ago, doing business and he has been trying to convince me to buy a simple house there. I plan to visit CDO in 2008. My wife and I would move from Angeles to CDO primarily because of its kept peace and order (the city´s biggest capital) and its being outside typhoon belt.

Oro joins ICT hubs in organizing national body

De Oro river to have 6th bridge soon (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3490&Itemid=50)
MindaNews
Thursday, 13 December 2007 08:04

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/12 Dec) -- The Cagayan de Oro River will soon have its sixth bridge as this “City of Golden Friendship” continues to expand as the seat of the Northern Mindanao region and commercial center in most of the northern part of the island.

The construction of the 250-meter long bridge, under a grant from Spain, would link the heavily-congested J.R. Borja Street in the city proper and the densely-populated barangay Carmen, according to a press statement from the city information office.

Mayor Constantino “Tinnex” Jaraula said the Department of Public Works and Highways is readying the final stage of the project’s technical plan. Construction is targetted to start either in March of April next year.

DPWH regional director Sinaolan Macarambon, along with her technical staff, met the mayor today to further review and study the development plan of the proposed bridge project.

Jaraula urged Macarambon to consider the height of the J.R. Borja Bridge as it might affect the city’s plan to boost tourism activities along the banks of the Cagayan de Oro River. The plan involves the construction of a walking bridge with a café station, a river boulevard, a high-rise fountain in the middle of the river, a multi-level rotunda building that would house a mini-library and museum.

The mayor and the DPWH officials are set to meet again next week. (MindaNews)

close-up...I'm assuming eto yung flyover from Vamenta Blvd turning left to Macanhan..
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/maccopy2.gif

i dont think it's gonna be a "left-turn" flyover since it's not gonna make sense. there are more vehicles plying the Mastersons-Vamenta than Vamenta-Macanhan Road, so the earlier should be prioritized. but that's imposible for now coz that portion of mastersons ave has only 2 lanes, thus a flyover would prevent a right turn(from the airport) to Macanhan and right turn(from Calaanan/landfill) to the airport. So i guess they would widen that portion of Mastersons by acquiring properties on both sides of the road.

Actually, nagkalat na sila buong Pilipinas...initially, we refer to them as Badjaos but they're not Badjaos really. The original Badjaos are from Jolo and they live in stilts and usually meet incoming ships. These mendicants allegedly come from the mountains in the Surigao provinces and are traditionally lazy, refuse to work, and begging is their means of living, even if they're physically capable of doing something better. :ohno:

Cebu Pacific cancels Saturday Laoag flights
ABS CBN News
12.15.07

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/images/news/newspics/12-14-2007/cp.jpg

Cebu Pacific has canceled flights to and from Laoag scheduled for Saturday to give way for passengers affected by five canceled flights Friday.

The Manila-Laoag (11:50 a.m) and the Laoag-Manila (1:25 p.m.) flights on Saturday was canceled to give way to passengers stranded in Butuan and Cagayan de Oro.

Cebu Pacific Vice-President for Marketing and Product Candice Iyog said the they are calling all passengers affected by the canceled flights to and from Laoag so that they won't go to the airport anymore. They will also allow refunds and rebookings.

More than 700 passengers were stranded after five Cebu Pacific flights were canceled Friday due to damaged planes, ABS-CBN News learned.

Iyog said that two of their planes experienced technical problems, causing flights bound for Bacolod (4:40 a.m.), Legazpi (7:10 a.m.), Cebu (8:40 a.m.), and Butuan (11:10 a.m.) to be canceled in the morning, correspondent Timi Nubla reported.

Another flight, a 3:05 p.m. Cagayan de Oro flight, was also canceled.

The stranded passengers were given free flight tickets to any domestic destination, while others living far from the airport were housed in hotels.

Other passengers were refunded of their fares, while some were transferred to other airlines.

The remaining 101 stranded passengers will be placed on other outbound flights Saturday.

As of Friday evening, one of the problems that had technical problems was back on service.

Passengers affected by the cancellations are advised to call the Cebu Pacific hotline at 702-0888.
