tough January 24th, 2008, 06:18 PM Japanese films wow CU, Liceo and MSU-IIT college students
By MARK D. FRANCISCO
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – THERE are now a total of about 4,000 Filipinos who are now proficient in Nihongo, the national language of Japan.
This is according to Iizawa Nobuaki, Japan Foundation-Manila assistant director for Japanese language promotion in the Philippines.
Iizawa was in a two-day leg in Northern Mindanao – January 23 and 24 – to promote Japanese cultural awareness among college students in three academic institutions, Capitol University, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) and Liceo de Cagaya University.
In an interview, Iizawa said that since 1996, Japan Foundation-Manila has been conducting Nihongo acquisition as a second language classes in Manila for Luzon, Cebu City for the Visayas and Davao City for Mindanao.
Each year, Iizawa estimated that they produce a total of 400 graduates.
Iizawa is also happy to announce that many Filipinos have already embraced several facets of Japanese culture.
“The entry of Japanese anime in Filipino television mainstream such as Naruto, Slam Dunk and Voltes V since the 1990s is a testament to that,” Iizawa happily recounted in halting English.
Iizawa said Japan Foundation-Manila will be bringing in February to the country world-renowned kabuki artists who will not only perform in Manila and Baguio cities but will also deliver tutorials on the subject.
Kabuki is a form of Japanese theatre known for the elaborate makeup of its performers.
Japan Foundation-Manila will also be bringing to the country in February a waidako performing percussion quartet.
A waidako is a multi-player multi-instrument performance highlighted by the nagadako-daiko or bass drum.
In the meantime, Japan Foundation-Manila wowed hundreds of students from the three educational institutions mentioned above with the screening of three award-winning Japanese films.
The first film, Fifteen, is about a 15-year-old stowaway girl who realized her mistake upon stumbling into a 7,000-year-old cedar tree in Yakuchina Island which is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The second and third films are all samurai classics megged by acclaimed Japanese director Akira Kurosawa.
“I can relate to Fifteen because I’m young just like the main character in the movie and I sympathize with what she went through,” Sheryl Abas, a 19-year-old mass communications student from Liceo de Cagayan University said

P70M oil plant to rise in Phividec (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/01/25/bus/p70m.oil.plant.to.rise.in.phividec.html)
By Danilo V. Adorador III
A PROCESSING plant for a Filipino-made engine lubricant product is set to be constructed at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Misamis Oriental (PIE-MO) this year, officials of the firm said.
Ray S. Olegarda, president and CEO of Huge Success Agricultural Corporation (HSAC), said the plant would manufacture Aero Wonderlube, an organic-based, all-in-one anti- friction lubricant, engine treatment, racing oil, hyper oil, and metal protector for both gas and diesel engines.
With an estimated cost of P70 million, the plant would be able to produce around 300,000 of lubricant oil per year, Olegarda told Sun.Star. HSAC is 60 percent Filipino-owned, he said.
Flurh D. Dagante, HSAC vice president, underscored the economic potentials of the plant's operation for the locals living within the PIE-MO area.
Dagante pointed out that Aero Wonderlube's raw materials--vegetable oil, fats and other ingredients--would be sourced locally, thus boosting the local agri-industry. Another benefit would come from the employment opportunities the plant will provide, he added.
The plant is expected to begin construction in the second quarter of the year, Dagante said.
Olegarda said Aero Wonderlube has been released initially in the market, but the firm needed a bigger plant for mass production.
"Our Middle East market is gaining grounds, so we need to keep up with the demand of the market," he said.
According to HSAC officials, Aero Wonderlube has been tested and proven to provide up to 25% on fuel consumption, prolong oil change two times or more, reduce harmful exhaust emissions up to 40 percent to 85 percent.

ona January 24th, 2008, 11:46 PM Negros Occidental is latest province to form local ICT council (http://www.mb.com.ph/INFO20080118114355.html)
Melvin G. Calimag
Responding to the government’s call for the creation of local ICT councils across the country, various players in the information and communication technology (ICT) industry in Negros Occidental have formed the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for ICT (BNEFIT) to pursue ICT-readiness and competitiveness as part of the Philippine Cyber Corridor.
Fifteen incorporators signed last December 21, 2007 the Articles of Incorporation and By-Laws of BNEFIT, whose goal is to make that part of the country a viable location for ICT and business process outsourcing (BPO) services.
BNEFIT aims to assist local government units and the national government especially in designing programs that will complement the educational system and integrate ICT therein to produce a more competent and job-ready workforce.
Its other goal includes the establishment and institutionalization of a strong network and various linkages with all academic institutions in Bacolod and Negros Occidental in order to implement strategies that will address the gaps identified in the ICT sector.
Incorporators of the council include Batapa-Sigue, Loida Acha of West Negros College, Teresa Asuncion Borromeo of Ayala Land, Julie Gretchen Dizon of Focus Pacific Communications, Dennis Jalbuena of Fernando F. Gonzaga Inc., Richard Loveland of Teleperformance, Hans Montenegro of Convergys, Raymund Nones of Solegy LLC, Andrew Regalado of ANCorp., Reymund Sabay of the University of Negros Occidental–Recoletos (UNO-R), Shiegfred Tan of the University of St. La Salle (USLS), Michael Tanner of Teletech, Mary Verdure Tolentino of the ITSNET, Teresa Villanueva of Lasaltech, and Agnes Villar of HERRA Diversified Holdings Corp.
BNEFIT has seventy-five members who agreed to form the federation during the first ICT conference held in Bacolod last November 15 and 16 including representatives from the cities of Silay, San Carlos, Bago, and Sipalay and the municipalities of Moises Padilla and Pulupandan, real estate groups, as well as schools such as Bago City College, Kabankalan Catholic College, Silay Insitute, and Binalbagan Catholic College.
The conference was attended by Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) commissioner Monchito Ibrahim and Bonifacio Belen of the Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (CEDF-IT).
On November 23, BNEFIT became one of the founding members of the Philippine Federation of ICT Organizations and Councils organized by the CICT chaired by secretary Ray Anthony Roxas-Chua III, named Philippine’s outsourcing and off-shoring (O&O) czar recently by President Arroyo.
Other founding organizations were the Iloilo Federation for Information Technology (IFIT), Cebu Educational Development Foundation for IT (CEDFIT), Davao ICT, Inc. in tandem with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), Cagayan De Oro (CDO) ICT with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber), and the Iligan Information and Communication Technology and E-Commerce Council (IICTECC).
The CICT with the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) is aiming to capture ten percent of the world’s outsourcing market equivalent to $ 13-billion revenues and one million employment by 2010 through public-private sector initiatives.
sana magka callcenter na ang Iligan bec. may IT Council na sila.
GearX January 25th, 2008, 02:23 AM Cagayan de Oro government identifies priority infrastructure projects this year (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW012508/content.php?id=052)
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The city government aims to complete or at least bid out eight priority infrastructure projects this year, City Administrator Griscelda M. Joson said in a recent interview.
Ms. Joson said Cagayan Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula met recently with city officials to discuss details of the projects. She also met last month with leaders of the local business chamber to identify measures and projects needed to boost the city’s business — including tourism — climate.
Cagayan de Oro, the trading center of Northern Mindanao, hosts two of the country’s biggest projects this year namely the P7-billion Laguindingan international airport and the P80-billion Hanjin shipyard in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
The projects given top priority for this year are those designed to improve public transport, as well as additional drainage to prevent flooding in low-lying areas, especially in the city’s central business district.
The city’s increasing population, now estimated at about 600,000, has resulted in congestion in densely populated districts, requiring additional infrastructure support from the local government. Completion of the city’s infrastructure program this year is also expected to boost tourism, city officials said.
The projects that will be auctioned off to private contractors include construction of drainage systems, dike and a spillway, as well as road widening and road improvements along accessible roads that connect distant barangays. Ms. Joson said funds for these projects will come from the city’s development fund.
Mr. Jaraula has specifically instructed the immediate construction of the drainage system from Corrales St. down to Burgos St. in the city’s downtown area in order to address flooding in the poblacion area, which could damage the road foundation in the city’s central business district.
The seven other projects identified are:
drainage for Tirso Neri St., from Corrales Ave. to Burgos St.;
drainage for Gusa-Camaman-an Road from J.R. Borja St. with road widening;
drainage for Yacapin St. from Corrales Ave. to Aguinaldo St.;
new dike along the Cagayan de Oro River from Ysalina Bridge to Tirso Neri Street;
spillway and road opening of Montalvan Ext. en route for Isla de Oro will be completed within the year;
opening of Mandumol Macasandig Road passing a subdivision towards Tibasak Road; and
opening of a new road from Nazareth St. to Bolonsori Cemetery in barangay Camaman-an.

Well, the local, national, and foreign investors have been praising CdeO's potential a lot. We have just based CdeO's progression nowadays from them, not coming from our own native mouths.

More employment opportunities in our fair city.

Tama kasi nag brain drain na nga tayo dito sa Pinas. Isa pa, all I know is that Duterte, Emano, Cruz, and Lobregat and other political leaders in the 2nd largest Philippine island have been solid in their unity to promote peace and progression of our island. This is the worth fighting for.

I agree! For many years of national deprivation, hunger, and political unrest between the two cultures of religion, ngayon magdagdag pa tayo ng kagulohan instead of helping and complementing each other, which will just hinder what our principled politicians have been fighting for. tsk! tsk! tsk!
Yan ang tunay na solidarity! Walang kapuso o kapamilya.

Yup! Only few vehicles have been passing this bridge. Well, the bridge is somehow underutilized since the access road, which is the Macasandig's Tibasak road is still underconstruction. But I'm optimistic that the access road will be finished early this year to minimize or even relieving the traffic.

Anyway, I'm fond of eating ice cream much more at summertime. ^^

Anyway, I don't know if there's Dairy Queen in CdeO's big stores like SM. I always stick to Nestle Magnolia.

Close this MANILA, Philippines -- Fifteen regional information and communications technology hubs will be pushed during an e-services forum slated February, a commissioner of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) said.
CICT commissioner Monchito Ibrahim said the 15 regional hubs will take part in the Department of Trade and Industry’s annual e-Services Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibition as a way to promote these regional areas as potential locations for offshore outsourcing services.
The CICT is coordinating with the DTI Regional Operations Group under undersecretary Carissa Cruz-Evangelista, Ibrahim said.
“We want to let offshore outsourcers realize that it’s not just Metro Manila where they can locate but they have a wider choice of locations,” Ibrahim said in an interview.
The 15 regional hubs will have their own booth exhibits during the e-Services conference. These areas include Clark in Angeles City, Cagayan de Oro, Legaspi, Urdaneta, Subic/Olongapo, Bacolod, Sta. Rosa, Dagupan, Iloilo, Davao, Cainta, Poro Point in San Fernando, Batangas City, Balanga in Bataan, Tacloban, Ibrahim said.
The cost of the booths will be subsidized by the DTI, the CICT commissioner said.
The e-Services conference and exhibit will feature major outsourcing players across all information and communications technology (ICT) sectors and related industries, according to the Center for International Trade Expositions and Missions (CITEM), the trade promotions arm of the DTI.
Over 100 exhibitors have confirmed their participation in this year’s event, including business process outsourcing firm SPI, Business Process Outsourcing International Inc., Japan External Trade Organization Manila, among others.

xlt January 25th, 2008, 06:55 PM There's still a lot of space around SM. Years ago this land was vacant and full of cogon. I was just wondering why SM removed their food court. Is it because of low traffic? It looks like SM CDO is one of the smallest SM City in the Philippines. I hope more businesses and residences will be put up in Pueblo de Oro.
i guess there is a big possibility to expand your SM mall there,,,there is vacant lot beside the mall for the future expansions...good afternoon,,,and congrats for the new thread
xlt January 25th, 2008, 07:15 PM Naa pa ba ang Raagas Beach sa Bonbon? How about Bayabas Beach? With the population boom in CDO, I wonder how these beaches are faring.

Ex!lE January 26th, 2008, 01:53 AM Province sets skills development for Hanjin project (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW012608/content.php?id=053)
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Misamis Oriental government is putting up a skills development program in response to a Hanjin shipyard project’s demand for new workers.
The $2-billion shipyard, to be located inside the Phividec Industrial Estate, could generate up to 40,000 direct and indirect jobs focusing on certain technical skills, welding among them.
"This is an extraordinary demand," Governor Oscar Moreno said. "What we’re looking at is a strategy by which our skills preparedness program is identified, formulated, pursued and sustained," he added.
Mr. Moreno said he would shortly issue an order organizing a skills preparedness program task force.
The provincial government recently met with representatives of institutions that could help workers develop their skills. These include the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), Mindanao Polytechnic State College (MPSC), Opol National High School, and the Cagayan de Oro School of Arts and Trades.
"We have agreed with the group that the task force would be led by TESDA and will be cochaired by MPSC. This is a combination of TESDA and the academe," the governor said. "Hopefully we will be able to train our people to fill the supply required."
Although the Korean company will put up its own training center for new hires, the provincial government is also developing the preparedness program to further enhance candidates’ skills.
Mr. Moreno said one possible area for the province’s training center is the MPSC campus in Lourdes, Alubijid. "We will rehabilitate the campus so it would serve as a training center for western portion of the province," he said.
Provincial trade director Eliza A. Pabillore said the Hanjin investments would be the biggest in the province this year. Other Korean businesses related to the shipyard’s operation are also expected to follow.
"We will be facilitating the registration of other Korean ancillary businesses, like housing, commercial and other businesses," Ms. Pabillore said. "We will be putting a special desk to accommodate all their business registrations."

It was initially called Regatta Subdivision when development began in 1997. Then they renamed it Pueblo de Oro (PDO) after establishing/creating a separate entity to manage the 360-hectare mixed-use estate. In 1999, PDO & SM inked an agreement to build SM City.

Yes, talagang dapat careerin na yang pagdating ng Hanjin. Imagine the effect this will do to the already booming Normin scene. The once sleepy towns of MisOr will never be the same. 20 years from now it will be like Clark-Subic there.

Confiscated gambling machines burned
By Danilo V. Adorador III and Joey P. Nacalaban
SMOKE billowed from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) headquarters as fire engulfed 23 confiscated "video karera" machines last Friday.
Acting City Police Director Isagani F. Genabe Jr. said the ceremonial burning foreshadowed of what was to come -- a more intensified campaign against all sorts of illegalities, including illegal gambling and illegal drugs.
Witnessing the smash-up, Mayor Constantino Jaraula said he has given Genabe "one to two months to clean up the city" from illegal activities.
"What we did today (Saturday) is just a beginning. From here, we will proceed with our goal to reform the city physically and morally," Jaraula told reporters at Cocpo's Maharlika headquarters.
To do that, however, Jaraula and Genabe both acknowledged the need to clean the police ranks, on allegations that a number of policemen are protectors of profitable illegal activities in the city -- including "video karera" machines.
The mayor advised law enforcers who either had the necessary policing skills or the interest to help the police hierarchy institute reforms to "seek re-assignment or go out of the city."
Genabe, days after assuming his post, implemented a revamp that saw five precinct commanders replaced and several heads of police units relieved. The reorganization took effect last Tuesday.
Although he has been hearing reports of some ranking police protecting various illegal trades in the city, Genabe said these had to be "validated first."
Genabe's appointment to Cocpo over two weeks ago coincided with the filing of extortion cases against three policemen -- two of them are high-ranking officials. The cases are pending at the People's Law Enforcement Board (PLEB).
Upon assuming office, the Cocpo chief said he immediately received information on the involvement of some police personnel in illegal gambling operations and other illicit activities.
However, Genabe said he needed proof to act on the reports.
A police official meantime has implicated some of his colleagues in the proliferation of illegal mini-slot machines in the city.
"They act as protectors of video karera operations and most of them are graduates of the Philippine National Police (PNP) Academy," said the source, giving a hint of those involved.
The police official, who spoke on condition of anonymity citing imminent perils, tipped Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro off of the identifying markings plastered to each of the video karera machine, minutes before these were smashed and burned.
A cursory look of the slot machines yielded such identifying symbols, written in stickers: a yellow cobra, a black dragon, a red star, a sleepy chick and initial letters SBJ.
"The markings identify the operators and the police officials protecting the machines. At the same time, the symbols served as a warning for any police officer not to attempt to confiscate the machines or else," the source said.

By the way, you're gladly welcome here @Kiln! Where are you from? Have a blessed Sunday. ^^

Yah. Besides it's affordable.
Well, El Salvador is just 20 kilometers or more I guess from CdeO. From the city proper, it'll just take up 40 minutes or more if there's no traffic. But if traffic, hmmm, just expect more than an hour.
Anyway, you're welcome! ^^
kiera_1990 January 27th, 2008, 01:40 PM :cheer:waaah! it pala ang loob ng pinakasikat na hotel ng CDO!!!
(PARK VIEW)
aw... I think the room shown in the picture was the budget or economy room...
Sa park view kami nag stay ng barkada ko last year... :drunk: and ang ibang room nila was very nice actually... :grouphug: parang suite ang dating kahit di naman un suite... :okay:
The rooms are quite big as well and ung double bed nila malaki rin compared sa ibang hotel na napuntahan ko...
Tsaka for 898php per night makakastay up to 6 people in one room (Junior) yata un...
We didnt have time to take photos kasi walang nagdala ng camera! :bash: but next time this coming march magpicture na kami.. hehe~
But for a budget hotel.. I recommend Park View because super lapit sa mga stores and very accesible pa kahit san ka galing sa CDO.. hehe
I really would like to stay there again... pero this year we need an apartment so unfortunately di kami sa Park View mag stay.. :ohno:
ANYWAYS.. hope this helps!

Ex!lE January 28th, 2008, 02:11 AM Gov’t targets 2010 completion of P7.9-B Laguindingan airport (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW012808/content.php?id=071)
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Construction of the P7.9-billion international airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental will be fast-tracked for partial opening in 2010. The goal is to open before the end of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term that year instead of the original 2011 completion target.
Governor Oscar Moreno said Korean construction firm Hanjin is ready to start development of the project site. "The Department of Transportation and Communication issued [to Hanjin] last Jan. 8 the notice... to start the project on or before Feb. 5," he told BusinessWorld late last week.
The provincial government, in coordination with the Transportation department and other national agencies, has been working on a resettlement program for families affected by the project since last year. To serve Northern Mindanao, the Laguindingan international airport covers 387 hectares and would cost an estimated P7.853 billion when completed.
Mrs. Arroyo, who is often introduced as a daughter of Northern Mindanao for having spent her childhood in nearby Iligan City, was here two weeks ago as Misamis Oriental’s foundation day guest. During her visit, she looked into the status of the airport project and witnessed the signing of an agreement between Phividec Industrial Authority and the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Dev’t Co. Ltd. for a planned $2-billion shipyard in the town of Villanueva.
Eliza A. Pabillore, Trade department provincial director, said the construction of the Laguindingan international airport will significantly boost economic activities not only in Misamis Oriental but in Northern Mindanao as well, especially the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan industrial corridor which hosts dozens of big industrial plants.
Ms. Pabillore said outside of the Laguindingan international airport, Hanjin’s shipyard project east of this city would also have a huge impact on the region’s economy.
"Once Hanjin locates here, many businesses would sprout," she said. "We are hoping that coordination between the Phividec, the local government units and Hanjin will result in [employment for] residents."
Mr. Moreno said Mrs. Arroyo has expressed hope to see even partial operation of the airport before she leaves the Palace.
"That’s something that we will continue to look at if that will be possible," said Mr. Moreno. The President had repeatedly noted in her speeches here that the Laguindingan international airport is a flagship project of her administration.
Meanwhile, the governor said the draft of an executive order that would harmonize policies of Philippine Export Zone Authority, Phividec and other agencies operating in Misamis Oriental would be completed within this week. The President said during her visit here that she would sign the order once she receives the draft from the governor. She noted that such order should result in the creation of a multi-sectoral body that will include representatives from local government units and civil society.
Mr. Moreno said the proposal has three objectives: to harmonize the relationship among the national agencies and the provincial and municipal agencies; to identify and strategize investment promotion activities that are directed at potential local and international investors; and to expand potential investment destination areas such as Claveria, Gingoog Bay, Opol and Lugait. — Geefe P. Alba
ph_matrix January 28th, 2008, 03:06 AM ^^ this is a good move/plan for misor to partially open the said airport..

GearX January 28th, 2008, 03:33 AM The Plans of the City (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
As a continuation of my column last week on the presentation of Mayor Tinnex to media on his plan for the city, we were all very impressed with the mayor’s projects both for the short term and the long term.
On the short term, a Marker at the Macabalan wharf where Macarthur landed by PT Boat after escaping from Corregidor in March 13, 1942 will be put up, complete with an audio visual presentation on the life and campaigns of the famous general. This will cost around P800,000 and not a single centavo will come from the city.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/Macarthur2.jpg
A group of Filipinos from the US will come over for the unveiling of the marker cum park on the anniversary of the landing in March. The Mayor also said that US Ambassador Kenny will also be around for the unveiling and so with other US personalities.
The building will be in the form a Macarthur’s Military Cap with stars around it corresponding to his rank as a Five Star General, also known as General of the Army. This is something that every one is eager to await.
Another short term plan is the development of various tourists spots, like the improvement of Macahambus Cave. This place is also historical and should be of great interests for tourists.
There is a new site that was also scheduled for development and that is Calavera Park where the Calavera Cave is located. This is located near the entrance to Alegria Hills in Indahag and should also be a good destination for visitors.
Other short term projects are new roads and streets that will ease the flow of traffic in the city. This does not include the new bridge that will be started soon connecting Suniel Street in Carmen and JR Borja in the east side.
The most ambitiousproject of the mayor is the boulevard by the river. This is his long term plan.
He wants to construct a 4 lane boulevard from City Hall to Puntod. Together with this, the city will purchase the property beside the city hall where the City Legislative building will be put up and to house othet departments of the city to consolidate all the offices in one area. Also, the city plans to purchase the property at the back of the amphitheater where a multi story building will be put up and the top floor will have a replica of a pineapple.
At the back of this pineapple building will be a walkway that will cross the river. At midstream there will be a kiosk like building where there will be shops and view decks. There may be other sites like this throughout the stretch of the river.
I am reprinting the photo of the artists concept of the boulevard on page 8. for everyone to see. This is a very nice plan and very interesting and I can just imagine how the city will look like when this is finished and when the whole boulevard already runs up to Puntod.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/Boulevard2.jpg
Why the focus on this? I am doing this for two reasons.
First, I grew up beside the river and the river is very dear to me. Whenever I cross any of the bridges I look at the river and look at the banks. For several months now one can see hawks flying around the river, looking for food. This is a sign that the river is alive.
I am therefore very interested in the development of the river.
Let me just digress a little. A few months back I was asked to write an article about the river for a coffee table book. I was so eager to write it but up to now the book has not come out yet.
The second reason I have is my worry that this project may not be completed in 2 ½ years or at the end of the term of mayor Tinnex. He said he will only be good for one term yet his plans will have to be carried over to the next term.
I am worried that whoever will be the next mayor may not have the enthusiasm and the foresight of Tinnex. At this early stage I would already say that Tinnex should start preparing for his next term because I do not believe the people would want him to be limited to only 1 term.
Everyone wants to see the completion of his projects, a legacy that he can leave to the city when he finally retires.
GearX January 28th, 2008, 03:44 AM A New General from Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
Tagoloan Misamis Oriental is very proud to produce its First General in the person of BRIGADIER GENERAL GREGORIO GACCION PADUGANAN. He is also the first and only Tagoloanon who graduated from the Philippine Military Academy, as a member of Class Makatarungan of 1978.
General Paduganan or Paddy, as he is fondly called by his peers is the eldest son of Geraldina N. Gaccion and the late Salvador Dael Paduganan.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/Paduganan.jpg
After Graduating from the PMA he joined the Philippine Air Force as his branch of service and started his military career.
Before his promotion he underwent several training and enhanced his knowledge by attending several courses.
He held several positions in the Air Force and as proof of his dedication in his chosen career, he was the recipient of several awards among which are the Gold Cross Award, twice from the Southcom and from GHQ.
He is also a recipient of the Distinguished Star Award given by the GHQ AFP dated October 3, 2001.
The latest addition to his awards was given last May 16, 2006 which was the DSS with 2nd BAL warded by GHQ AFP, the first having been received last September.
Currently General Paduganan is the Chairman of the Air Force Bids and Awards Committee based at the GHQ of the Philippine Air Force at Villamor Airbase in Pasay City.
Truly a good tree produces good fruits as all his siblings are successful in their respective careers.
Again to the newly promoted General and his family, Congratulations! May your tribe increase.

:okay::okay::okay::okay::okay: Ang ganda ng concept:cheers::cheers: Sana yung pineapple structure is a giant one, instead of multi story building, siguro gawin nalang 4 floors yung basement and the rest above is a pineapple structure free standing that can be house of people such like a Burj Al arab hotel in Dubai, like billowing sail. Diba mas grandeur if we have a giant pineapple like building, that will be more attractive....
GearX January 28th, 2008, 04:20 AM just like Burj-Al-arab hotel sa Dubai; sa malayo parang sailboat.^^
GearX January 28th, 2008, 04:29 AM you're probably refering to Kryzl Condominium at 11th-29th Sts., Nazareth, CDO

Ex!lE January 28th, 2008, 04:33 AM ^ beautiful.
boju2 January 28th, 2008, 04:39 AM ^^Yah, that's it. So if the soon structure to be built there is like a shape of a huge pineapple therefore, expect a great leap of tourist attraction we will have. Surely, maraming mga tao na gustong aakyat sa ganitong klaseng arkitekto.
Pwede pa sigurong kausapin si Mayor since hindi pa final ang lahat, I think the only hindrance is the budget but if there's a reason to build a grandeur structure, they can find ways to get budget...
GearX January 28th, 2008, 05:01 AM Badminton as bridge for Mindanao peace (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/01282008/sports07.html)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—Members of various tribes—regardless of religious belief, occupation and aspirations—played badminton over the weekend with the hope that sports could help promote further the culture of peace in Mindanao and in the entire country.
The Philippine Agrarian Reform Fund for National Development (Parfund) and Balay Mindanaw Foundation Inc. (BMFI), nongovernment organizations based in Manila and Cagayan de Oro A, led the endeavor through the dialogue “Play for Peace.”
More than 600 badminton enthusiasts—priests, soldiers, former rebels, government officials and the youth coming from all over the country clashed with their rackets on court.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/sports-pic04.jpg
Lanao del Sur had the biggest number of participants, besting those from Manila, Cebu, Bacolod, Cotabato, Kidapawan, General Santos, Davao, Marbel, Koronadal, Oroquieta, Pagadian, Zamboanga, Valencia, Iligan, Butuan, Gingoog, Ozamis, Cagayan de Oro, Tacurong, Maramag in Bukidnon and Lambayong and Lugait of Misamis Oriental.
Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno made the ceremonial serve for the event staged at the city’s Sports Zone complex.
A delegation from the International Community privy to the continuing struggle for peace in Mindanao also took part in the event.
The event was in support of the ongoing commitment on the cessation of hostilities between the government and the Rebolusunaryong Partido ng Mangagawa ng Mindanaw. Both parties have entered into a peace negotiation since 2003, with BMFI as the independent secretariat.

(PARK VIEW)

GearX January 28th, 2008, 07:51 AM Capitol University set to open new museum (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
It has a rather exotic name, but the storyline behind it is a summary of the educational apostolate of the university’s founder. When Madame Laureana San Pedro Rosales first came to Mindanao in 1951, the first places where she had taught were Butuan, her husband’s hometown, and then Marawi. In the Islamic City, she helped build a small Islamic school almost from scratch, the Jamiatul Al-Islamia, in answer to the request of then Senator Domocao Alonto. But she also made the rounds of the lakeside towns and made a spirited campaign to convince the M’ranao women to go to school. She succeeded, and many of today’s M’ranao women leaders were actually her protégés – Emily Marohombsar, who became MSU president, Princess Tarhata Alonto Lucman, who became a congresswoman, Princes Potri Pacasum, among others.
From Marawi, Rosales established her first ever school in Mindanao, the Iligan Capitol College in 1962. It was there that she begun her own brand of education, incorporating values with quality education, under a system that today has grown to several branches. The Capitol System of Schools today includes a CHEd-certified Class A university, Capitol University of Cagayan de Oro, the flagship of the system that includes other institutions such as the Lyceum of Iligan, Gingoog City Junior College, Bataan Heroes Memorial College in her hometown in Limay, Bataan, and the 200-bed state-of-the-art Capitol University Medical City.
It is by far one of the few educational apostolates in Mindanao that has bridged the three dominant cultures of the region – Moro, Christian lowland, and lumad – all culminating in Capitol University that today actively promotes and engenders the indigenous culture and the arts of Mindanao.
That is the storyline of the Museum of Three Cultures in whose artifacts and collections are represented the cultural biography of the founder of the Capitol System of Schools. The museum then will showcase a veritable collection of Mindanao antiquities from all parts of the spectrum of Madame Rosales’s educational apostolate. It shall house a gallery of what is probably the most extensive collection of M’ranao antiquities from Tugaya, Lanao del Sur; a gallery of ethnohistory which shall display Cagayan de Oro history, Butuan archaeological artifacts, lumad arts and crafts from the Higaunon and Manobo cultures, and a treasure of Christian lowland artifacts of Northern Mindanao; and finally an art gallery and coffee shop that shall promote the local visual arts of Mindanao. It shall also have a research archives that shall house Spanish era documents, photographs, memorabilia of well-known personalities in Mindanao, which shall be open to all researchers and students of culture.
Capitol University’s Museum of Three Cultures is set to open on May 2, 2008, on the birthday of the founder of the university. It is housed in the new academic building 3. It will have modern galleries with interactive exhibits. Even before it opens, the museum has established international linkages. It is a member of the International Council of Museums based in Paris, the International Committee of Museums of Archaeology and History, and the International Movement for a New Museology. The anthropologist Dr. Antonio Montalvan is the director-curator.

Inc. in Villanueva town and the wheelchair factory owned by a French humanitarian organization Handicap International and Freedom Technology in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
The brief visit was concluded by a sumptuous dinner at Pryce Hotel hosted by the French Presidency in honour of Gov. Oscar S. Moreno.
The delegation was composed of the following heads of diplomatic missions : European Union Amb. Alistair Macdonald; Belgium Amb. Gregoire Vardakis; Czech Republic Jaroslav Ludva; Finland Amb. Riitta Resch; French Amb. Gerard Chesnel; German Amb. Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, Netherland Amb. Robert Brinks; Romanian Amb. Valeriu Gheorgie; Spanish Amb. Luis Arias Romero and United Kingdom Peter Beckingham.
During their visit at STEAG State Power Inc., in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, the European Commission to the Philippines cited the power company for its active involvement in social development and environmental programs.
H.E. Alistair MacDonald expressed delight on the projects implemented by SPI in support of the Philippine government’s programs on social services delivery, livelihood improvement, governance and capability building, and environmental protection. He also cited the power plant’s efficiency, state-of-the-art operations and substantial contribution to the economic progress of Mindanao as it helps secure for the island a stable and reliable supply of electric power.
The Mindanao Power Plant of SPI is one of the big-ticket foreign direct investments by a German company in the Philippines and is seen by many as an affirmation of confidence to the promising business climate in the region.

xlt January 28th, 2008, 08:30 PM This is good development. This P4.992 is for civil works, right? But the total cost is P7.853? I hope the balance is not allocated (implied?) for kickbacks. You get suspicious when numbers don't jibe. Or the balance was for relocation of affected residents and compensation.

PUBLICLY LISTED Asian Terminals, Inc. (ATI) yesterday submitted a bid to operate the Mindanao Container Terminal (MCT), a flagship project that could boost development in Mindanao.
In a disclosure, the company said it would be participating in the bidding for the concession contract for the management and operation of the said terminal.
There were no details given, and company officials were not available for comment.
Other companies interested in Mindanao Container Terminal include Amer Asia, Harbour Centre Port Terminals, Inc., International Container Terminal Services, Inc. and Maersk Lines.
Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (Phividec) Industrial Authority, in which MCT is currently subsumed, had earlier said it would award the contract by the end of March this year.
Seen as an alternative facility to other ports in southern Philippines, MCT unloads one container van in about 2.5 minutes as against an ordinary port’s 10 minutes,:applause: [ang bilis] making it efficient to ship cargos to and from neighboring Asian countries such as Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The MCT, which has a total cost of P3.24 billion or $85.34 million, has two gantry cranes, four rubber-tired gantries and can accommodate vessels that can carry up to 150 twenty-foot metal containers.
It already has three regular callers: Maersk, National Marine Corp. and Lorenzo Shipping Corp.
Asian Terminals, meanwhile, operates the Manila South Harbor that offers services like container terminal handling, arrastre, stevedoring, storage, cranage, domestic cargo handling, and passenger terminal operations, equipment services and international container freight station.
Other subsidiaries of the company are ATI Batangas, Inc. and South Cotabato Integrated Port Services, Inc. — L. N. P. Lee

I just hope that this airport will be well-built, just like the Iligan-Cagayan-Butuan Highway. On another note, how much do you think will taxi cost from Laguindingan to CDO City center? A limousine service would be a good idea, with pickup points in major hotels and malls.

Not only MICT's key position why it has become nowadays as the major transshipment hub in the second largest Philippine island, but because of its very advanced facilities to save the investors' executive time, money, and effort. Ang galing!
GearX January 29th, 2008, 04:30 AM shuttle routes would be recommendable such as Makro-LADP; Gaisano Mall-LADP, LKK-LADP or Divisoria-LADP. The Bacolod-Silay shuttle route which is 20 kilometers costs P100. LADP is around 40 km from CDO proper, so the shuttle would be P200 I presume. Taxi rate can be computed at 2.50/200 meters + flag down rate of P30. So there are 200 200-meter in 40 km so 2.50 x 200 = P500 = P530 total. Pakyaw would be P600-P1000. Cheaper if you hire jeeps and vans...I think

Farirah January 29th, 2008, 04:58 AM The Plans of the City (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
Not only Macahambus Cave that will be focused, but I want Macahambus Hill too. I already gave my statement to Professor Montalvan to pursue the goal of preserving the remaining untouched area of Macahambus Hill into a major tourist park, so that the next generation (one of the reasons) won't forget the history that our freedom fighter-forefathers had gained their major victory during 1900's.
Multi-storey building with a pineapple replica? Ilan kaya ang exact storeys? Wow! Nice plan indeed to promote CdeO's pineapple industry at Bugo more to the rests of the world. I believe that with MacArthur Marker, this multi-storey building with pineapple replica will mark CdeO more in the world map in line with other international cities.
At the midstream, there'll be shops and view decks, and the proposed boulevard will run up to Puntod----Fantastic indeed!:cheers::cheers:
Anyway, I'm somehow breathless within three minutes (hehehe) about Mayor Jaraula's not only local, but global vision too for sustainable CdeO's progression.

GearX January 29th, 2008, 05:34 AM Stevedoring services at Mindanao International Container Terminal in Tagoloan to be bid (http://mwamaarkhh.multiply.com/journal)

THE Mindanao International Container Terminal (MICT) in Tagoloan town in Misamis Oriental will bid its stevedoring services soon but at a still undisclosed date.
This was disclosed by an official of the Philippine Veterans Industrial Development Corporation (Phividec) Industrial Authority who spoke on condition of anonymity because the particular bidding date has yet to be finalized.
As an industrial economic zone, Phividec operates the MICT and is also host to dozens of multinational companies operating in the province.
The industrial economic zone covers some 3,000 hectares which include portions of the towns of Tagoloan and Villanueva in the east coast of the province.
Phividec was created under Presidential Decree (PD) 538.
MICT started operations as a government entity solely operated by the Phividec Industrial Authority since 2004.
This early, five companies have already expressed interest to bid for the stevedoring services of the port.
The five are identified as Asian Terminals, Inc., Amer Asia, Harbour Centre Port Terminals, Inc., International Container Terminal Services, Inc. and Maersk Lines.
Maersk Lines is already a regular client to the port along with National Marine Corporation and Lorenzo Shipping Corporation.
Container ships who have business with these companies ply to Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia and other parts of Southeast Asia because MICT is part of Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines – East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) transnational economic zone.
Said to be the most modern port outside of Metro Manila, MICT prides itself with having two gantry cranes, four rubber-tired gantries and can accommodate docking a container ship which can hold up to 150 20-foot metal containers.

Anyway, gusto talaga ni PGMA na matapos ang LIA in her term. Nakakatawa talaga! I don't think matapos yan within 2010. Koreans (unlike Chinese) are very particular in regards to quality of the said airport construction. ^^
After all, let's just see this coming 2010.

THE Cagayan de Oro Whitewater Rafting Adventure will represent the country to the World Rafting Championships on June 26 to July 3, in Seoul, South Korea.
Acting city mayor Michelle Tagarda-Spiers said Chisum Christopher Factura, the team’s organizer, made a courtesy call to her office last week for support in the team’s first international competition.
The Cagayan de Oro team’s entry to the said competition will also mark the first time for the Philippines to join a world rafting event.
Spiers said that the city government will extend support the team since it is an honor for Cagayan de Oro to represent the country in a sports competition which the city is also famous for.
The event is being organized by International Rafting Federation which is considering Cagayan de Oro as a possible venue until it decided in favor of South Korea’s bid.
Spiers said she is hoping that the team’s entry to the prestigious whitewater rafting competition will prominently put Cagayan de Oro and the Philippines in the map of world-class whitewater rafting destinations. –CIO/PIA

Marissa and I ate at a new restaurant at Tiano-Makahambus Streets called Chicken Inasal. We shared kinilaw malasugue, which was very good but not quite as good as the kinilaw that Marissa makes for me. I had two of the chicken liver BBQ sticks, for 30 pesos each. Marissa has the Chicken Inasal and boco halo for desert.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/food/chicken-inasal.jpg
The restaurant is in an old but nice house and is pleasantly decorated. The downstairs area is air conditioned and non-smoking. The upstairs area is open-air, the smoking section, with a nice view of the street below.
The food was great and the service was acceptable. I was given a Coke Light rather than a Sprite Light without explanation (of course they were “out of stock” of Sprite Light) and I received only a single Chicken Liver BBQ stick, when I had quite clearly ordered “duha”, two of them.
From my brief perusal of the menu, it appeared all the dishes were native. Highly recommended.

Limketkai area to be turned into business district (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW122707/content.php?src=3&id=101)
27-December-2007
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Expansion of this city’s Limketkai commercial center will be completed within two years, the company’s chief executive told BusinessWorld last week.
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/gpa.jpg
The walkway connecting a new building on the Lapasan highway to Limketkai — Geefe P. Alba
The plan involves the conversion of the company’s 30-hectare property in Lapasan into the new Cagayan de Oro central business district.
Divisoria district, about two kilometers away, is this city’s traditional center of business and commerce.
Alfonso U. Lim, president and chief executive of the Limketkai Group, said the commercial complex plan includes constructing a four-star hotel; office condominiums and financial centers; providing space for "green area"; and putting up an information technology park.
"Our plan is to fully develop the Limketkai Center as well as to improve the ecological balance of the center by developing more green parks," Mr. Lim said.
"We would like to contribute to the economic and social growth of the city," he added.
Redevelopment of the area has been ongoing for close to five years. Although the commercial center has already been renovated from an open-roof shopping mall into an enclosed and air-conditioned building, it still has room for expansion.
At present, an elevated walkway connecting the second floor of the Limketkai center to the neighboring Gateway building is being constructed.
The Gateway building is located along the highway. It will house a fastfood outlet, drug store, coffee shop, bakery and convenient store. "We are constructing the Gateway building to serve as main entrance from the highway to the Limketkai mall. This will be 24-hour, open all-day business central for Cagayan de Oro," said Mr. Lim.
He said the building would "lure" commuters from the main highway who do not enter the boulevard leading to the main Limketkai shopping mall.
It takes a few blocks to get to the commercial center from the Lapasan highway.
To serve this market, Mr. Lim said the 24-hour business central would result in increased foot traffic. "The public can enter the Gateway building and walk a few steps to get to the different establishments," he said.
Pedestrians who want to proceed to the Limketkai mall can access the elevated walkway.
Mr. Lim said that the construction of the Gateway would be completed on the second quarter next year. One dining establishment, Skypark Restobar, will open by the end of December in time for the holiday season.
"We can rely on tourists visiting here," Mr. Lim said. He said that Limketkai's development plans were not focused on profit.
"The return on investment will take longer than in other cities like in Metro Manila," said Mr. Lim. "But this is more for love of Cagayan de Oro rather than on purely business motive."
Henrik Yu, one of the owners of Bigby's Cafe and Restaurant, said in a previous interview that locating in shopping malls increases the revenue turnover of the food business. "Our income increased by more than 20% when we transferred to shopping malls," he said.
He said that the outlet located in Limketkai center gets overcrowded with other branches such as the one at SM City.
"The market of Limketkai center has fully matured, many people get used to going to Limketkai," said Mr. Yu.
One advantage of Limketkai center is Rosario Strip, a small area that hosts upscale restaurants, coffee shops, wellness shops, and boutiques. "Rosario Strip is geared towards lifestyle where people stay there from late evening until early morning," said Mr. Yu.

GearX January 29th, 2008, 10:32 AM Emano optimistic Agora facelift next month
Mindanao Sunday Journal
4th Week January 2008
The much-needed rehabilitation of the Agora market and terminal will take place next month, according to Vice Mayor Vicente Emano.
The vice mayor expressed gladness that Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula will push through with the project.
The proposed facelift of the old market was conceived and planned by the vice mayor during his incumbency as the chief executive as he noted that the facility is already dilapidated and may pose threat to safety of the vendors and the public.
LODGING HOUSE
In order to protect the tourists and travellers, the vice mayor said the construction of a lodging house would be incorporated in the plan.
The transient inn will provide them a safe place to rest while waiting for their rides, he said.
In this way, they do not have to wait for long hours at the terminal and fall prey to thieves and other bad elements, the vice mayor cited.
The proposed Agora market redevelopment will also be implemented on a Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) scheme like the Cogon and Carmen Public Markets, he added.

xlt January 29th, 2008, 08:00 PM I am just wondering why Agora is already dilapidated. This market was constructed when I was a student at XU (shows my age!). Had the city government allocated enough for maintenance and repair, it would not have become dilapidated in 25 or so years. When infrastructure is put up, there should be allowance for Repair and Maintenance to extend the life of the structure. Just my thoughts...
Emano optimistic Agora facelift next month
The proposed Agora market redevelopment will also be implemented on a Build-Operate and Transfer (BOT) scheme like the Cogon and Carmen Public Markets, he added.
xlt January 29th, 2008, 08:06 PM @GearX, is this at Limketkai?
I prefer shopping at LKK than SM or Gaisano because of the choices. There are more restaurants and bars too.

boju2 January 30th, 2008, 01:50 AM EU envoys laud Misor Plant for development efforts (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080129.htm&no=89)
Villanueva, Misamis Oriental (29 January) -- The European Commission to the Philippines has cited STEAG State Power Inc. (SPI) for its active involvement in social development and environmental programs.
In a recent visit to SPI's Mindanao Power Plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental, European Union Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Alistair MacDonald expressed delight on the projects implemented by SPI in support of the Philippine government's programs on social services delivery, livelihood improvement, governance and capability building, and environmental protection.
He also cited the power plant's efficiency, state-of-the-art operations and substantial contribution to the economic progress of Mindanao as it helps secure for the island a stable and reliable supply of electric power.
Ambassador MacDonald led nine other Ambassadors from the European Union in a visit to Northern Mindanao Region to look into various EU-supported programs and projects. The delegation includes Belgian Ambassador Gregoire Vardakis, Czech Republic Ambassador Jaroslav Ludva, Finish Ambassador Ritta Resch, French Ambassador Gerard Chesnel, German Ambassador Christian-Ludwig Weber-Lortsch, Netherlands Ambassador Roberth Brinks, Romanian Ambassador Valeriu Gheorghe, Spanish Ambassador Luis Arias Romero, and United Kingdom Ambassador Peter Beckingham.

boju2 January 30th, 2008, 01:58 AM Oro mayor bats for reversal of DMPI classification as ecozone (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080129.htm&no=86)
Cagayan de Oro City (29 January) -- City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula today declared that he will not be afraid to petition for the reversal of the national government's decision declaring the 27-hectare cannery in Barangay Bugo of Del Monte Philippines, Inc. as a Special Economic Zone (ecozone), if it includes real estate taxes in the exemptions, and if no new business is established in six months.
During the regular flag-raising ceremony, Mayor Jaraula said that the city government stands to lose millions of pesos in business tax collection from the giant company now that it is already declared by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) as an economic zone.
Mayor Jaraula revealed that as a consequence of DMPI's declaration as an ecozone, the city government loses as much as P51 Million in business and real estate taxes collectible this year.
Consequently, this will have a considerable impact in the city government's implementation of its programs and projects for the current fiscal year.
Mayor Jaraula hoped that the declaration of the DMPI estate as an economic zone will not include the real property taxes.
Section 24, Chapter 3 of the Republic Act No. 7916 otherwise known as the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995 as amended under Republic Act No. 8748 in 1998 provides for the exemption from national and local taxes of business establishments operating within the ecozone.
Mayor Jaraula said that should DMPI be also exempted from paying the real estate taxes, he will not hesitate to take legal action declaring the approval of the DMPI as an economic zone, fraudulent.
Meanwhile, Mayor Jaraula ordered the City Assessment Department to update the assessment of real properties in areas covered by giant real estate developers such as those of the Fil-Estate and Ayala Lands properties as soon as potable water system shall have been installed in the said areas.
Mayor Jaraula hoped that a final agreement will already be achieved between the Cagayan de Oro Water District (COWD) and the Rio Verde Water Consortium regarding the regular supply of water in the city's southeastern barangays. (Cagaayn de Oro City IO)
