Sera June 8th, 2006, 07:02 PM ^^ Regarding the number of call centers, if CDO has the most in Minda with 3, how many has Davao? Because I thought that Davao had more ICTs than CDO. Anyways, congrats again for CDO for inching its way up as Mindanao's Future Economic Powerhouse!

just to answer your question sera for information purposes:
"Cagayan de Oro has three of the 10 call centers in Mindanao with over 800 call center representatives, and we expect this to double by next year."
it will mean davao has 7 call centers even without peza accredited zone to give the investors incentives. as far as i know it has 3 international call centers:
1. cybercity w/ 400 seats http://news.inq7.net/breaking/index.php?index=7&story_id=11371
2. 1 american w/ 150 seats along rizal st.
3. 1 japanese firm especialing in animation w/ ? seats
local call centers:
1. joji ilagan w/ 200 seats
2. Hubport Interactive w/ ? seats
3. ADD Force w/ ? seats
4. blinque w/ 50 seats
the only call center academy in mindanao is john f. kennedy call center academy davao (correct me if i'm wrong about it). regarding ICT companies, davao has numerous you may refer to www.silicongulf.net

boju June 9th, 2006, 04:41 AM Oro Chamber lays down dev't center groundwork
By Danilo V. Adorador III
THE Oro Chamber business development center will cater to diverse business needs and help promote Cagayan de Oro as a prime investment destination, according to business leaders and city officials Wednesday.
The business center's site, seated in a 2,800-square meter property inside the sprawling Pueblo de Oro business park, will be the new home of Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce Inc., upon its completion next year.
Mayor Vicente Emano who graced the center's groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday exhorted the Oro Chamber to continue its role "as the city's partner in development."
He also praised its members for supporting all his trade missions, which he said were important in "laying the ground works for future foreign investments."
Emano and some members of Oro Chamber had just finished a trade mission in India and Germany two weeks ago.
"Much can be done with the partnership the local government has with the Oro Chamber. With its members behind our trade missions, it's easy to get foreign businessmen to invest in the city," he said.
Emano also took the opportunity to announce another rounds of trade missions to Australia and New Zealand sometime this year, which he hopes will be supported again by the city's local businessmen.
The Oro Chamber business center will house training and function rooms, a showroom for Mindanao products and a library. To be built with provisions for expansion, Oro Chamber president Ruben Vegafria said they hope to create a one-stop-shop business center.
Vegafria also thanked Guillermo Luchangco, Pueblo de Oro chairman and chief executive officer, for donating the site.
Construction of the initial low-rise building would begin in August, he said, to be followed with the planned four-storey additional edifice, which will house additional offices and multi-purpose rooms.
Once finished, Oro Chamber will join the only two other business groups in the entire country, which maintains a business center of their own, said officials from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce Inc., who also attended the groundbreaking.
boju June 9th, 2006, 04:52 AM The Philippines as a retirement haven
THE Philippines, through the initiative of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, has taken a bold step that promises to make the country a haven for retirees. The President has declared the retirement industry a flagship project and appointed former Philippine National Police (PNP) chief, retired Director General Edgardo B. Aglipay, as the head of the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA).
Industry sources say that a fully developed Philippine retirement industry could create four million jobs and generate income of billion for the country by 2015. The newly appointed PRA head has noted that the retirement industry has been growing by leaps and bounds in the past few years due to changes in global demographics, specifically aging populations in post-industrialized countries. The PRA estimates that the Philippines can support one million to three million retirees.
There is a need to develop a retirement package that would include health care and retirement villages. The PRA is optimistic that with the support of the private sector, particularly real estate developers, hospitals, and leisure area owners, plans to set up retirement villages in Baguio City, Tagaytay City, Subic, Clark, Cebu, Iloilo, Boracay, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro will push through and start to draw the projected retirees into the country.
We congratulate the Philippine Retirement Authority headed by former Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief, retired Director General Edgardo B. Aglipay and Personnel, and wish them success in all their endeavors.
boju June 9th, 2006, 04:58 AM Ano kayang lugar ang may pinakaraming mabighaning retirees? :eek2 Siguro Baguio na namn..... Sana CDO...::runaway:

Yes, exactly right. When you are already in Upper Balulang, the right side is Pueblo de Oro wherein SM stood and Xavier Estates in the right wherein ridgeview chalets found. Pinaka OK yan na lugar napili mo, bigatin ka pala.:)

CDYCC's Summer Youth Camp, a great success!
By Jonah Jane Enterina
The City District Coordinating Council (CDYCC) of the Archdiocesan Youth Apostolate of Cagayan de Oro held their 2nd Oro Summer Youth Camp '06 at Our Lady of Fatima Parish in Camaman-an.
There were 242 delegates from different parishes, communities and organizations plus the hard working committees from the youth of Camaman-an and AYA Volunteers.
This celebration of faith and worship was graced with special guest speakers like Reverend Monsignor Rey Manuel S. Monsanto who shared his wisdom and knowledge on the very controversial novel of Dan Brown "The Da Vinci Code."
Monsanto encouraged the youth to know more about their faith with the guidance of the Holy Spirit and not be easily swayed by stories not grounded on faith and proper historical facts.
Monalisa Pangan, a very active Christian and a former delegate to the World Youth Day in Toronto, Canada 2002 shared her time and enriching God-filled experience during her stay in Canada as well as imparting her knowledge to the youth about "Personhood."
The delegates also had a great time listening to Ate Malou from CFLA as they draw their "dream house" to introduce her talk on the essentials and importance of "Family." And of course the ever talented in bringing out the best of the youth, no other than Fr. Nathan Lerio as he cheerfully explain the importance of having a "Community."
He has his own special way of tickling the young listeners through his humorous jokes as he delivers his talk on the importance of having a family of friends in Jesus Christ.
Aside from the different talks and sharing presented by the different well-equipped speakers, the participants had a chance to showcase their talents through singing, dancing and not to mention modeling! One of the highlights of the summer youth Camp is the search for Summer Cool and Summer Babe 2006!
The contestants from different communities were glad to represent their organization as well as to boost their self-confidence.
Fr. Ricardo Dancela from Balingasag District graced the event through officiating the Closing Eucharistic Celebration of May 25. And we were very touched to hear him sing the music genre of Shamrock's "Alipin" as he relates his own special love and bond to the Father.
This year's summer youth Camp was a success for it does not only encourage the youth to be always in service to his fellow youth based on the Church moral teachings but also to truly witness that JESUS is really alive and guiding us to live a life of love and compassion to all people especially the youth of today.
The youth is still looking forward for another venue to express their faith and love of God!
"For in life, loving our fellow brothers in faith and hope is one of the greatest act we can do for all eternity."
FrancisXavier June 9th, 2006, 06:23 AM i guess that's another youth organization..

1. my take on our "afghanistan" taxis:
i dont mind the kia taxis here, at least mas accessible mag taxi.. :) mas barato man. i heard theyre going to phase them out soon, pero i hope not kay like i said barato man.. like if i took a cab (kia) from my office to my house ( around 10km) id only pay 70 pesos, if i took the aircon taxi, id pay more than a hundred bucks..so aanjin ko ang magandang taxi if hindi ko ganun kadaling masakyan kasi magdadalawang isip ako because of the price diff. (esp pag frequent ka mag taxi..) :) your taxis are pretty impressive though :)
2. on the city rivalry..ok ra man na if youre only using the rivalry as a benchmark on how your city performs relative to other cities....ayaw lang nag mag away ug dinautay ug laiing cities..pathetic man diba? ( im not refferring to anyone..the thought lang ang pathetic..) :)
i was in your city last week, and i must say its nice and progressive... keep it up

Committee readies int'l airport plans
THE inter-agency coordination committee involved in the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) is currently preparing the ground for the preliminary phase of the implementation of the project.
In a press statement sent to media outlets, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno said they are continuing to monitor the project in a weekly inter-agency meeting with the concerned government agencies tasked to undertake the multi-million-peso project.
The Provincial Government already submitted the Program of Works to the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) for the land acquisition of the LADP access road.
DOTC Assistant Secretary for Planning and Project Development Roberto Castañares informed the committee that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has already issued a Special Allotment Release Order for this purpose.
The DOTC will subsequently transfer the funds to PGMO. Moreno disclosed that the bidding documents for the access road are being updated at the moment. Bidding procedures will soon follow.
Meanwhile, the National Government is undertaking negotiations with the Korean Eximbank to lower the initial payment to the project contractor, given the budgetary constraints at the National Government.
The project cost has significantly increased over 2001 estimates.
The National Housing Authority (NHA) will soon forge a Memorandum of Agreement with DOTC to facilitate the transfer of funds for the development of the second phase of the relocation site to be situated at Barangay Tubajon, Laguindingan.
On the other hand, the DOTC will also seal a deal with the Local Government of Laguindingan to cover assistance for the physical relocation of the affected residents.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has identified the LADP as one of the priority projects in Northern Mindanao.

2. on the city rivalry..ok ra man na if youre only using the rivalry as a benchmark on how your city performs relative to other cities....ayaw lang nag mag away ug dinautay ug laiing cities..pathetic man diba? ( im not refferring to anyone..the thought lang ang pathetic..) :)
i was in your city last week, and i must say its nice and progressive... keep it up
Very well said, Bai!

Good news!!!

Pueblo de Oro provides huge investment
CAGAYAN de Oro's top business park developer, Pueblo de Oro Development Corporation (PDODC) got an ISO 9001:2000 certification, the first business park to be awarded such in the island of Mindanao.
City Councilor Jose Benjamin Benaldo who heads the committee on commerce and trade said that PDODC has a tremendous contribution to the future of Cagayan de Oro and the Gross Domestic Product of the city.
Councilor Benaldo, who authors the investment ordinance, said that with the presence of the PDODC, the city has become among the globally competitive urban centers in the country where international firms can choose to put their business, with the existence of business parks, facilities and services of international standard.
Roger Villanueva of Societes General Surveillance Philippines who gave the ISO certification said that with the certification, PDODC now belongs to the roster of quality corporations in the country.
Guillermo Luchangco, chief executive officer and chairman of the board of PDODC said that the granting of the ISO certification is a significant event in the company's corporate history since it is celebrating its 10th year anniversary in the city this year.
He vowed to continue their good partnership with the city government, itself being at the forefront of development in Cagayan de Oro, transforming a once barren land in the uptown area of the city into a bustling business district.
Among the companies that are now situated in the Pueblo de Oro Township are Shoe Mart, Link2Support, Xavier University, Pueblo de Oro Golf Course, Corpus Christi School, plush residential estates, and the Oro Chamber Business Development Center. (CIO)

I totally agree with you, Sera! LimKetKai Complex (LimKetKai Mall + Robinsons Cagayan de Oro) has the biggest shopping complex in Mindanao... With regards to the biggest individual mall, SM City Davao, I think, lords it over Gaisano Mall Davao. I think their SM has more shops. Gaisano Mall of Davao is huge. However, you can't include its parking area and all the useless space its atriums consume, as part of a mall's real floor area, di ba? So, I think I'd go with SM City Davao as the largest single mall at 75K+ sq. meters! SM City CdO, with the expansion building is now over 86K+ sq. meters! But, since you can't count the parking area, therefore, it's actual size is actually less than 70K sq. meters. Gaisano City Mall Cagayan looks small via satellite. But, it's bigger than it looks! The main building has 4 levels. The second building also has 4 levels with a quasi-5th level. It also has a basement parking! Right now, they're also expanding they're parking area at the back of the new building! I wonder if they'll be having mall expansions in the near future...With 2 sevice elevators and 22 service escalators, 3 food courts, 4 cinema houses and a department store which, I think, is one of the biggest, if not, the biggest in the VIS-MIN area, Gaisano City Mall CdO can't be considered small! You'll definitely have to visit Gasiano City Mall CdO when you're in Cagayan de Oro!!! It's the underdog (but not in sales, only in popularity) among our 3 biggest shopping centers...
By the way, there is a slight delay in the openning of the Robinsons Department Store in LimKetKai Center... it will open on the 21st of July instead of the 28th of June.

I think Gaisano CDO is the biggest individual Mall in CDO because I visited it way back in 1999 when I studied there. The battle of malls there in CDO has just begun bec. I heard they are building an Ayala Center there. The whole complex will probably cost 2 billion as I have read somewhere! CDO is really on track to be Mindanao's Premiere Metropolis. I impressed beyond words!

Gaisano City Mall is big... But, i think LimKetKai Mall, not the complex (excluding Robinsons CdO, Ororama and the Rosario strip) is the biggest here in CdO! A lot has changed since the year 2000... When SM City opened in 2002, almost all the downtown malls (excluding Gaisano) were affected! Ororama Magacenter had the worst hit... Ketkai was also greatly affected... However, KetKai was able to rise again... Now, SM is in trouble... You'll see what i mean if you'll get to visit Cagayan de Oro again!!! A mall in the wilds can not compete with another mall in the heart of the city...
burotski June 13th, 2006, 07:48 PM I think Gaisano CDO is the biggest individual Mall in CDO because I visited it way back in 1999 when I studied there. The battle of malls there in CDO has just begun bec. I heard they are building an Ayala Center there. The whole complex will probably cost 2 billion as I have read somewhere! CDO is really on track to be Mindanao's Premiere Metropolis. I impressed beyond words!
The Ayala Complex will be located at Indahag. They have a 200 hectare+ property in the said area. But, they'll be using around 30 hectares in the 1st phase of their project which has an estimated cost of around 4.5 billion
(it used to be only 2 Billion). If I remember right, their first project will include a shopping complex and villages (high-end and low-cost)... They will also be constructing midrise buildings! Groundworks have already been started... Grounbreaking is scheduled last quarter of this year... Hope, everything goes as scheduled...
cyrusal June 14th, 2006, 02:49 AM ^^ it used to be 4 Billion but they increased to 4.5. They will release an initial amount of 2B to start the project and will finish in 7 years.
FrancisXavier June 14th, 2006, 07:44 AM I totally agree with you, Sera!
By the way, there is a slight delay in the openning of the Robinsons Department Store in LimKetKai Center... it will open on the 21st of July instead of the 28th of June.
http://img102.imageshack.us/img102/2396/robinsonsdepartmentstore2kb.jpg
what? delay? argghh... anyway, this robinsons expansion is almost as big as the area of the main building... this department store has a hallway connecting to the main Robinsons building.. cguro there would be leasable spaces/shops on that hallway.. nice expansion..

burotski June 15th, 2006, 01:42 AM Cagayan de Oro City (15 June) -- Around 500 bicycle enthusiasts led by Senator Pia S. Cayetano will pedal 100 kilometers through several towns in Misamis Oriental to promote environmental awareness and the importance of a healthy lifestyle in the 5th “Bike for Hope” on June 17.
The advocacy ride kicks off in Cagayan de Oro City at 6:00 am and travel through Tagoloan, Villanueva, Jasaan, Balingasag and Lagonglong before returning to the provincial capitol compound where a culminating program will be held.
The bikers are expected to complete the course in four hours at a relaxed pace of 25 kilometers per hour.
Bike for hope is not a race and is open to all cyclists, including occasional bikers. “It is our advocacy to champion and raise awareness on issues such as the environment, health and women,” according to Cayetano, a member of the Philippine National Duathlon Training Pool.
To usher in the event, Cayetano, who chairs the Senate Committee on Health and Demography, will pay a visit to the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) on June 16 to promote breastfeeding.
Bike for Hope community seminars will be held from June 15-16 to tackle topics like solid waste management, prevention of violence against women and breastfeeding. Participating towns include Balingasag, Villanueva, Jasaan, Lagonglong, Salay, Balingoan, Tagoloan, Binuangan, Sugbongcogon and Talisayan.
A fitness clinic will also be conducted for female students in Jasaan and Talisayan to be led by Asian duathlon championship ruler Ryan “Bad Boy” Mendoza, national women’s triathlon champion Ani de Leon and three-time national triathlon champion George Vilog. The fitness clinic seeks to empower women by teaching young girls about running and fitness activities.
On June 18, Cayetano, who also chairs the Senate Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, will be in Bukidnon province to lead the ceremonial marking of the boundaries of the Mt. Kitanglad Protected Area. She will also join a cleanup climb to the famed mountain, a declared national park which is home to the Philippine Eagle.
The 5th Bike for Hope is a project of the Compañero Rene Cayetano Foundation in cooperation with Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno and the League of Municipalities led by Tagoloan Mayor Yevgeny “Bambi” Emano.
Bike for Hope was started three years ago in honor of the late Senator Compañero Rene Cayetano. It will be the first time for Mindanao to host the bike event that was previously staged in Baguio (December 2003 and January 2005), Cebu (June 2005) and the Ilocos Region (January 2006).
The event is sponsored by the Department of Tourism, Coca Cola Foundation, Nestlé Philippines, Pilipinas Shell, Cebu Pacific, Universal Robina Corp., Pryce Pharmaceuticals, Promax, Endurox and Accelerade.
Proceeds will be used to support various health projects of the Foundation, which is aiming to put up the country’s first national liver center. (Office of Sen. Cayetano)
burotski June 15th, 2006, 01:44 AM Cagayan de Oro City (15 June) -- For having contributed to the growth of the city’s economy, the city government paid tribute to four business entities during the twin celebration of the 108th Philippine Independence Day and the city’s 56th Charter Day,
City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano conferred plaques of recognition to the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Oro Chamber) represented by its President, Ruben Vegafria; ARIBA Telecontact, Inc. represented by its owner Engr. Elpidio Paras; Robinsons Mall represented by operations manager Danilo Camat; and Link2Support, Inc. represented by its senior manager Junar Amador during the joint celebration last June 12 at the Kiosko Kagawasan.
Aside from recognizing the business entities’ contributions to the city, nightly entertainment will be provided for the Cagayanons at the Kisoko Kagawasan starting June 13 with various local and national government agencies showcasing their talents.
Meanwhile, Emano called for a wholistic reform as the nation commemorated its 108th independence anniversary.
In his message, Emano stressed that a serious reform is what this country needs if only to change the lives of the Filipinos for the better.
Emano added that this reform should start within every Filipino citizen.
The mayor pointed out that the celebration of the country’s independence should serve to remind everyone to continue the fight that our forefathers had started.
“We are here today to continually endeavor to eradicate poverty, injustice and inequality, for the betterment of the lives of our people. Let’s get away from too much politics and instead work together to uplift the lives of our people by giving them justice and fairness,” Mayor Emano added. (City Information Office/RAGCOM)
burotski June 15th, 2006, 01:45 AM Cagayan de Oro City (15 June) -- Inspired by the fruitful results of previous trade missions, City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano is now contemplating on leading another trade mission to Australia and New Zealand.
In a recent gathering with local businessmen, Emano revealed his plan of leading a trade mission to the land down under after having been prodded by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Emano said that Australian businessmen are eyeing Cagayan de Oro for their business expansion. Already, four giant Australian investors have talked with the mayor and had expressed their interests in investing here.
The mayor said that he and a group of local businessmen plan to visit Melbourne and Sydney in Australia before proceeding to New Zealand.
“I hope you can join me again in this trip which I am planning to set on the third quarter of the year,” he told local businessmen.
Mayor Emano recognized the vital role of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) in pushing forward the economic growth of the city.
The Oro Chamber had been supportive of Mayor Emano’s past trade missions to China, Taiwan, India and Germany.
Mayor Emano pointed out that the chamber has proven to be a real partner of the city government in giving a better life for the Cagayanons. (City Information Office/RAGCOM)
Sera June 15th, 2006, 04:13 PM ^^ Do you think Mayor Emano is the most travelled Mayor in the Philippines today? I mean even here in Baguio our mayor hasn't had a single foreign visit since assuming office in 2004. Mayor Emano is like your local version of Pres. Ramos. I mean way back when Fidel was Pres. of the Phils. he also made very frequent travels (that were always criticized btw) for foreign investment. Buti nalang dyan sa CDO full support ng chamber of commerce si Emano. Kung yung buong Pilipinas lang tulad ng CDO na very united, e di maunlad na sana bansa natin... :bash:

That satellite image was taken about 2 or 3 years ago... At the back of Robinsons is the cockpit (right in front of Discovery Hotel)... Between the cockpit (Gold City Coliseum) and Robinsons now stands the MallBerry Suites Hotel. The area of the cockpit was supposedly part of the planned Robinsons! Kaso, the owners (Quimpo family) would not sell the lot for 85 million pesos! If you look at the map, the Grand Caprice Restaurant and Convention Center is the the pink rectangle at the left lower corner numbered 1. It is directly below the pink square numbered 2 which is Robinsons Handyman Do-It-Center. Then, you can look at the satellite image to locate it...

5th Mindanao ICT gab slated on Sept. 20-22
INFORMATION and Communications Technology (ICT) stakeholders in Mindanao will meet on September 20 to 22 in Cagayan de Oro City for the 5th Mindanao ICT Congress.
Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry confirmed the event during the celebration of ICT Month on June 8 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant in Cagayan de Oro City.
"With the positioning of the country as Asia's e-services hub for call centers and business process outsourcing, we acknowledge that, indeed, information and communications technology is strengthening its role as a major sector contributing to the country's economic development. The development of the call center industry for the past three years has been tremendous," said Oro Chamber president Ruben Vegafria.
Commissioners Damian Mapa and Francisco Perez II of the Commission on ICT vowed to support the ICT Congress.
Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, OIC chair of Medco, also graced the occasion along with Jason C. Magnaye, MinBC executive director, and Romeo J. Serra, chair of the Mindanao Business Council and BIMP-Eaga Business Council.
The 5th MICT Congress is an annual gathering of ICT players organized by the Mindanao Business Council.
For this year, Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry takes the lead as the host, in cooperation with the Cagayan de Oro City Government and Ritecc-10.
The congress proper will be held at the Grand Caprice Restaurant and Convention Center while the exhibition and trade fair will be held at The Atrium of Limketkai Mall.
The trade fair will showcase ICT opportunities as well the latest technology and applications in this field.
Organizers of the 5th Mindanao ICT Congress expect a heavy turnout of participants and exhibitors because this event will continue to realize the intentions to transform Mindanao as the alternative ICT hub in the Philippines.
The 5th MICT will be a three-day event of educational sessions, policy and advocacy statements, special meetings, trends and technology presentations, and exhibition and trade fair.

i also wish so, but would that be possible..? I guess the area is just too small for a real coliseum. but behind it, along osmeña street, is a vacant lot... maybe enough for Gold City Coliseum to be the same size or smaller a little than Araneta.

boju June 20th, 2006, 05:10 AM Airport agreement set for okay
By Lizanilla J. Amarga
LAND disputes and relocation issues hounding the P6 billion Laguindingan International Airport will soon be put to rest, as a memorandum of agreement on land and the resettlement of affected families will be signed today by concerned agencies and local government officials.
Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar Moreno announced Monday that there will be an agreement signing for the NHA-Laguindingan Airport Resettlement Phase-2 Project at Barangay Tubajon, Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.
He said top representatives from the National Housing Authority (NHA), Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), Airport Transportation Office (ATO) and Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), among others, will be parties to the agreement. Second District of Misamis Oriental Congressman Augusto Baculio Jr. and Laguindingan Municipal Mayor Orville Abellanosa will also be among the agreeing parties.
"We are making sure that the project is moving closer to completion," he said.
The signing is slated 2:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Sunriva Restaurant.
Under this agreement, the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental will "spearhead the composition and define the inter-agency roles and responsibilities in the project and ensure the resolution of issues concerning the land acquisition of access road" to the airport and resettlement project.
The provincial capitol is also tasked to "monitor the progress, coordinate, assist and expedite the resolution of issues affecting the project."
Baculio will be responsible for ensuring the availability and timely release of the funds from the banks to the ATO-DOTC for the project and resettlement area.
"Monitor the progress, coordinate, assist and expedite the resolution of issues affecting the project," the contract reads.
DENR for its part will identify the relocation site with an area of some 6.20 hectares and facilitate the declaration of the site as resettlement area with Presidential Approval.
The Municipality of Laguindingan will issue a Preliminary Approval and Locational Clearance, Development Permit and ECC from DENR and issue a Certificate of Entitlement and Lot Award to identified beneficiaries.
NHA will be concern with development of the relocation site and providing "technical assistance" to the towns in the formulation of policies.
This "relative to cost recovery, beneficiary selection and social preparation, relocation procedures and in other areas where assistance is required."
ATO-DOTC for its part will be the one to allocate and provide funds to cover the development of Phase 2 Relocation Site at Tubajon, Laguindingan.
It is tasked to facilitate the transfer of funds to the NHA for the development of the site and to "monitor and inspect the progress of works from time to time."
Earlier, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the release of P500 million to start off the project and the relocation of the 100 families.
In 1998, the loan amount for this project was originally pegged at KrW 21.172 billion with interest rate of 2.5 percent payable within 20 years with 10 years as grace period. This was signed in February 24, 1998 with effectivity date last December 19, 2002.
This as the original project cost then based on the 1996 was only around P902.7 million.
The project cost was revised in 2002 that now pegged the Laguindingan to cost the government P5.386 billion.
Last January 13, 2004, the EDCF loan from the Korean government was amended loan in the amount of US $16.4 million with supplemental loan of US $8.10 million.
Then $38.9 million was negotiated to come from Korean Export Import Bank and fund source NIB for $12 million loan.
Now, the project cost and funding is pegged at US $107.7 million. They are as follows: US $16.3 million from the EDCF, US $8.2 million from EDCF Supplemental loan, US $32.30 million as government equity, US $38.9 million as Buyer Credit, US $12 million as Export Credit.
Pre-construction is set this July 2006 to June 2007, horizontal structures this July 2007 to June 2010, Vertical Structures this July 2008 to August 2010.

Pre-construction is set this July 2006 to June 2007, horizontal structures this July 2007 to June 2010, Vertical Structures this July 2008 to August 2010.
i didn't know that the original project cost was less a billion peso.. at least na revise in 2002.. or else Laguindingan will have a cheap airport if it was built the 90's.
Sera June 21st, 2006, 01:27 AM ^^ The entire project & the extent of it was probably overlooked during the '90s kasi the airport was just conceived by then. Slowly, various factors like affected areas & resettlement were included plus inflation that's why the cost of the Airport ballooned to $6 billion.
:bash: It's really sad that it actually takes the government 15 years (1996-2010/2011) to have a feasible project like this become a reality. Kulang talage ng political will ang mga national gov't leaders natin!! Federalism is the key now!

And, next time you visit CdO, try visiting Badabing, Ontic and Homecourt in Capistrano corner Cruz Taal... They also offer the same quality of enjoyment! They're also very near each other... you can just hop from one bar to the other... Well, there are other bars of the same nature in the said vicinity, but I highly recommend this THREE! HEHEHE!

boju June 22nd, 2006, 07:36 AM International airport expenses seen to go up 10 percent
By Lizanilla J. Amarga
THE cost of constructing the Laguindingan International Airport is expected to increase by 10 to 20 percent, Department of Transportation and Communications assistant secretary Robert Castañares said.
A multi-party agreement on Phase 2 Relocation Project of the Laguindingan Airport Development Project was signed Wednesday.
By middle of 2007, it is expected that some 611 families will be completely relocated and the construction of the P5.8 billion project will be started.
Misamis Oriental Second District Representative Augusto Baculio announced that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has signed an executive order for the multi-billion peso Mindanao Railway.
This project is now going to be moved to make sure that its railway tracks will pass by Laguindingan International Airport and make it a "major stop."
Earthworks
After the agreement signing, a press conference was held whereby Castañares admitted that there is an expected increase in the current construction cost of the international airport that is pegged at P5.3 billion.
"We expect that the cost of the construction will really go up considering that the prices for the project construction and materials is still based on the original budget," he said.
Castañares said they have now put up "engineering strategies" to make sure that the increase in the cost will not be so high.
He said this include in revising the original plan of developing 400 hectares to only 200 hectares.
"We will be developing only the footprint of the Laguindingan Airport project that involves only 200 hectares," he said.
He added that the rest of the 200 hectares will be not be developed but will be used to accommodate industrial and commercial project.
Another engineering strategy, Castañares said, is their revising the project plan to adjust "earthworks" for Laguindingan's "irregular" terrain.
He said the plan now will be to adopt the present level without having to do so much earthworks to lessen the cost.
Realized
But Castañares said, "But off-hand and based on initial reports in spite of these engineering strategies the construction cost of the Laguindingan Airport Project is expected to go up by 10 to 20 percent."
He cited the Iloilo International Airport Project that was pegged only at P6 billion in the past but is now costing them up to P8.5 billion.
According to him, this P2.5 billion is actually P1 billion for the cost of the foreign exchange rate, the P1 billion for the taxes such as the Value-Added Tax and the P.5 billion for the hike in construction and material costs.
"But these increases can still be accommodated as long as it can be properly explained," he said.

Seeing those pics I can see CAGAYAN DE ORO has improved drastically. Before 1950s, Zamboanga, Bacolod, Iloilo, Iligan, Butuan, Baguio, Naga, & Cotabato were definately more progressive than CDO.
Now, CDO is ahead of all of them (but at par with Bacolod & Iloilo). Soon CDO may join the ranks of Cebu & Davao. The city of Golden Friendship is trully a city worth Gold!!!
lochinvar June 24th, 2006, 08:31 PM What I like with Laguindingan International Airport is it is going to be built almost equidistant between CDO and Iligan. Both would be winners in this arrangement. Pretty soon the CDO-Iligan Growth Corridor will be filled up with many more industries. Corollary to this corridor, Subic-Clark Expressway Project has not been finished yet and already there are big time prospectors from Korea and China that are trying to secure land along the expressway.

I know its smaller than Iloilo/Bacolod Airports but why is the Lagundingan airport(5.5 Billion) almost as expensive as the Iloilo airport (currently at 6 billion) & costs more than the Bacolod airport (4.5 Billion).
Anyway there's lots of room for expansion as the demand gets bigger. Hopefully thay can add CDO character since the aesthetic design isn't final yet. :)

Iloilo/Bacolod Airport has been started in 2003. Laguindingan Airport has been estimated to cost 5.5 Billlion in today's parameter. I guess most of the cost of Lagundingan Airport has been poured in resetlement costs & site development cost.
boju June 26th, 2006, 02:28 AM P8-B project allowed to traverse tribes’ land
MARAMAG, Bukidnon — An R8-billion power transmission project will be undertaken soon to ensure a stable, reliable power supply in Mindanao.
This developed after different tribal groups agreed to allow the use of their ancestral land for the region’s biggest power transmission project.
The National Transmission Corp. (TransCo), the National Commission on Indigenous People’s (NCIP), and the Indigenous Cultural Communities (ICCs) signed recently a multipartite memorandum of agreement (MoA) involving the R 8-billion Mindanao backbone transmission project at Pryce Plaza Hotel in Cagayan de Oro City.
The MoA is a prerequisite for the issuance by NCIP of a certification of precondition required by Republic Act 8371 or the Indigenous People’s Rights Acts.
In effect, the MoA allows Mindanao’s power transmission project, the 334-kilometer Abaga-Kirahon-MaramagBunawan 230-kv transmission line, to traverse tribes’ ancestral domain.
Aside from TransCo and NCIP, the other parties in the MoA are the Federation of Matigsalog-Manobo Tribal Councils (Femmatrics) whose domain straddles the borders of Davao and Bukidnon Provinces; the Palalan Higaonon Tribal Council of Tablon of Cagayan de Oro; and Pualas Higaonon Tribal Council of Baungon, Bukidnon. City ‘logs off’ ICT month fete with website launch
THE City Government will culminate this week the month-long celebration of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month with a variety of activities highlighted by the launch of the City Government's own website.
Acting City Administrator Wilma Polley-Rugay, chairperson of the City Government ICT Group, disclosed that various activities are lined up starting June 27 until June 30 at the Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria to drumbeat the celebration of ICT Month, which anchors on the theme "Utilizing ICT for Commerce and Tourism."
Rugay said that part of the weeklong culmination is an exhibit on the latest ICT gadgets, software and hardware products and other ICT services by the different ICT players in the city. The exhibit, which will be displayed at the Kiosko Kagawasan is open to the public.
Among the ICT players that will join the exhibit at the Kiosko Kagawasan are Philcom, Global Chips, Dataworld, Magnet Technologies, Graphic-All-In-One-Store, Syntac Techs, Microtrade and McMayer while different tour operators in the city will feature their services and facilities.
Another interesting activity that forms part of the ICT celebration is the opening of Divisoria as a Wi-Fi area for one week. This means that for one week starting tomorrow, persons with notebook computers can enjoy wireless Internet access at the Divisoria area for free.
The weeklong culmination will be capped on June 30, with the launch of the official website of Cagayan de Oro City.
The launch will be spearheaded by City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano where he is also expected to try a video conference with key figures in the ICT industry.
Early this month, the city, through the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. hosted the 1st Northern Mindanao Business Summit on ICT in preparation for the 5th Mindanao ICT Congress, which will also be held in Cagayan de Oro in September this year.
The country's ICT leaders branded Cagayan de Oro as an ICT Goldmine owing to the continuing influx of ICT investments in the city in recent years. (CIO)

this is where cdo gets ahead of davao. investors are flooding the city and wifi areas are laid out. your i.t. zones are getting filled while davao still has to establish a "respectable" it zone. PLUS, cdo is closer to cebu, this may not sound good to some but the "spill-over" factor of cebu could go to cdo. and you have an ayala development starting late this year. IT summits, conventions and meets are good programs to promote IT investments.

History of Cagayan de Oro
By Chic Nery Fortich
Timu'ay Salangsanga known tribal leader
THE time has come for the story of Timu'ay (or "Datu") Salangsang to be known, and appreciated by Kagay-anons.
The two people who did the research that we use here are Antonio Montalvan, Ph. D., who included it in his masteral thesis on Cagayan's ethnohistory, and Enrico Ramon Lluch, M. A., who gave me six books and essays by several writers, the most popular of which was the late Jesuit, Fr. Francis Madigan, S. J., who had even traveled to Spain to verify his story. And it is to these two people that I give my thanks forever.
I have pieced their works together, and wrote a full-length Binisaya musical play on it, which has, alas, not yet seen stage production
So, now, I am writing the full story for the Cagay-anons to read so that they will know the story of their hero.
Timu'ay Salangsang was the leader of a tribe of around 500 proto-Manobos who had been isolated in Himulugan (today called "Huluga), on a high promontory next to the large river, already called Kagay-an.
Since they lived close to the Visayans, their dresses, body tattoos, and jewelry were strongly influenced by these neighbors. The women wore the Visayan skirt-and-blouse while the men wore sleeveless bests and shorter pants, which displayed their tattoos.
The tribe was known as a quiet people, who made their living from the different sources around them: the wild forest among which animals lived; the river where several types of fish and seafood grew; the trees where fruits hung; and the wide grounds which they planted with rice after they had been burned by the kaingin method. There were also tall bamboos that they cut down and made into their large tulugan on stilts.
Since they were animists, who believed in the bathala and diwata, they were often plagued by warriors from the Islamic tribe of Sultan Kudarat, who lived in the western part of Maguindanao, who would ask them to give a tithe, or their share, to Sultan Kudarat. Of course, they were also continually bothered to shift from animism to Islam, but which Salangsang kept refusing.
When Sultan Kudarat was displeased with them, he could wage war. This was what bothered the tribe most often, for they were not really warriors.
At around this time, the Recollect Fathers were getting closer to Himulugan, and had heard of the "docile" people who lived there. They sent word to Salangsang, and asked him if they would be welcomed there.
But Salangsang sent back the word that he would kill them if they got near to their place.
The Recollects started looking for people who could help them and finally met an older woman who had been Christianized and now lived in Butuan. She was Doña Magdalena Bajuyo, Salangsang's grandmother. She agreed, and would even go with them to see him.
She sent him a message that she was going there, and asked to be met near the river's edge.
Salangsang could do nothing but obey her, for he truly loved his grandmother, and had great respect for her.

History of Kagay-an, Part 2
By Chic Nery Fortich
Friars in Himulugan
SALANGSANG was surprised when his grandmother arrived in Himulugan, bringing with her two Spanish Recollect friars.
He asked her why she brought them, when she knew that his tribespeople were animists.
She replied that the friars taught a very nice religion, from which they would learn about God.
They can deal with the children, Salangsang said, but not with him. The friars agreed. As soon as they had been placed in a corner of the tulugan, the friars started their work with the children.
Their altar was located on the riverbank. The children were taught catechism, and the Mass was celebrated there every day.
But there were spies all over, both from Salangsang's tribe and from Kudarat's. So, Sultan Kudarat soon heard about the friars' presence in Himulugan, and immediately formed a big group of warriors to kill them.
Salangsang's own spies heard about this, and quickly rushed to inform them of the big group of warriors.
The friars were told to run away from the place, using the backspace and some cave areas, before they were caught and killed. A few tribesmen accompanied them, hiding in the cave areas, or running through the long grass, until they were finally free.
When the Moros arrived in full force, they conducted a battle against Salangsang's group, as they demanded for the friars.
"Friars? How can we have friars here, when we are animists?" Salangsang reasoned.
But the Moros would not believe him, and insisted that he was just hiding them. While they waged the battle, they kept looking for the friars, but found none.
Finally, the Moro leader told his people to stop, but warned Salangsang: "For this act of covering the friars' presence, you will pay an additional tithe to Sultan Kudarat."
Salangsang complained, but the Moros left him. His own people had, for the endless time, been defeated. And now, they had to pay more tithes.
Caught between the Moro threat, and the friars' unsure promise of sending him more fighters from Surigao, Salangsang found himself in a dilemma.
Two years passed, and no priests or additional soldiers came. Sultan Kudarat's men often went to collect their additional tithe, and to check on the presence of the friars.
One day, a report was given to Salangsang. Another friar was coming. This one was alone, and rode on horseback.
Salangsang went up to the tulugan and sat with his back to his animist altar, to wait for the arrival of the priest.
The friar tied his horse on a branch, and began to climb the bamboo steps toward the promontory. A crowd of people were waiting for him, with Timu'ay Salangsang sitting up on the tulugan.
He introduced himself as a Recollect friar named Fray Agustin de San Pedro, who had been born in Portugal, but spent most of his life in the University of Salamanca, where he studied architecture and the strategies of warfare.
"I can help you build a better tulugan, and teach you how to use the sword and firearms," he promised to the crowd.
At this news, Salangsang and his people were excited. Their eyes twinkled with the news of learning how to use the sword and firearms.
But, first, they should transfer from where they were, to a wider and lower area downstream. Himulugan was not a good place for them. If they were besieged by their enemies, they would not have any water, for the river was way down the promontory.
Nodding with his people, Salangsang understood the friar's meaning.
"And, the other thing we must do as soon as we are in the lower area," Fray Agustin added, "is to build a large fortress."
He explained what a fortress was, and the protection it would give the people.
In a few days, they were all packed up and riding their bancas toward their new home.

Victory, at last!
By Chic Nery Fortich
THE fortress that Fray Agustin designed was to begin on the corner of what are, today, the streets Rizal, running down towards the river in the back; and Justo Gaerlan, running down the street towards the left sides of the river, then upstream, and, turning the southwest corner, going toward the part where the Rizal street had ended. The tall tower would stand right on the southwest corner.
The progress of the work on the fortress was made faster by the many people who worked on it. The last part that needed more work was the tower, facing the southwest, and built so tall that anyone there would be able to see as far as possible in all directions.
The area occupied was much smaller than that in Himulugan, but the people felt safer in its protectiveness.
Meanwhile, the Moro people of Sultan Kudarat in Maguindanao were also preparing for their big war with Salangsang's people. Spies had told them about Fray Agustin's arrival, and they had decided that a large fight needed to be fought with Salangsang and his friar-friend.
They prepared thirty caracaos on the Ozamis ocean, and filled them up with their modified firearms, kris, and filled them with as many fighting men as would fit.
Fray Agustin started preparing the men he had trained on the armas de fuego and the swords.
They heard a loud shout from the lookout on the tower, and knew that their enemies could now be seen.
The enemies, however, had not been prepared for a huge fortress protecting Salangsang's people. They decided to make their camp close to the ocean, and wait until dawn to make their attack.
Fray Agustin, on the other hand, now had a hundred more soldiers from Surigao, along with six Spanish men. They were all ready.
The Moros began their attack on the fortress walls, but they immediately fell to the ground when the tribesmen and soldiers returned their attack with their swords. All day long, the Moros tried to go up the walls. But not one of them succeeded. More and more of them died.
When evening came, the Moros decided to take a break, and rest for the night in their camp.
Hearing of this, Fray Agustin asked for someone to get his horse, and to prepare several men who would go with him. They would catch the Moros by surprise.
The fortress' gate was opened, and they got out. Fray Agustin led the group on horseback, the horse walking stealthily as they went nearer to the Moros. When they had come close enough, Fray Agusting suddenly shouted an order for his men to attack.
The tired and the dwindling number of Moros were easily defeated. Not one of them remained alive.
A loud and happy cheer came up from the people, as they watched Fray Agustin and his fighting men coming in. Victory was theirs, at last!
In the morning, after Fray Agustin had said his mass, he was approached by both Salangsang and his wife. They told him that they believed that the Spanish Crown had given them their victory, and were ready to swear allegiance to it. They would also like to be baptized as Christians.
But Fray Agusting told them that while they now had allegiance to the Crown, Christianity would take a while longer for them to get. They still needed to be taught about it.
The couple agreed, and they called all their people to begin their instructions in catechism.
Soon, they were baptized, and began to build the first church that stood on the same site where San Agustin Cathedral stands today.
Thus ends the story of Timu'ay Salangsang and his friend, Fray Agustin de San Pedro.
Fray Agustin eventually disappeared from the site. And, as more and more people came in to build their homes, Salangsang and his wife also disappeared. Today, there are no more people who bore his name. But it is believed that the many who still exist today and bear similar-sounding names, are really his descendants. Some of these names are Saa, Sambaan, Nacalaban, Cabaraban, and many others.
There are other stories of native heroes and heroines in our history books. All it takes is more research, work.
If we could come up with such workers, then we will have a truly filled and beautiful record of our people's history.

FrancisXavier June 28th, 2006, 03:03 AM oh man, im so jealous. the pointe there is so snazzy... im so jealous, and your number of malls in your city exceeds mine... (im from davao) how many "legitimate" malls do you really have? :weirdo:
CDO has LimketkaiMAll, Gaisano Mall, Robinsons, and SM city.. Though Ororama meets the requirement to ba clled a mall(it has shops, foodcourt, Department store, Supermarket, bowling center, bingo, Cinema), i dont consider it a mall. for me, it's more of a Tiangge.. It could be the 5th mall of CDO though..
hezron June 28th, 2006, 03:53 AM IT in CDO
this is where cdo gets ahead of davao. investors are flooding the city and wifi areas are laid out. your i.t. zones are getting filled while davao still has to establish a "respectable" it zone. PLUS, cdo is closer to cebu, this may not sound good to some but the "spill-over" factor of cebu could go to cdo. and you have an ayala development starting late this year. IT summits, conventions and meets are good programs to promote IT investments.
long time no hear valium. peace! i agree with you, cdo is more vibrant nowadays in its ICT programs. i myself would like cdo to flourish more on industrial and ICT developments in mindanao. for us not to make these two brother cities rampaging again, let's leave improvements in each cities course strategically. davao not getting an IT zone at this time even with numerous ict companies (in fairness to davao, it's wifi areas are the most established in mindanao area, you can provide list if i'm wrong), is not a sign of negative progress. mindanao has long been disregarded by the rest of the country, and amidst the insurgencies, mindanao in the 90s still able to present a decent metropolitan, that is davao. now, if davao will get all the investments in mindanao, it will be the next metro manila in the making sucking all resources out of its neighboring areas and that would be very ugly scenario. davao can not have it all, the boom of cdo and all great cities gensan, zamboanga, butuan, iligan, etc. is a good sign for mindanao. it's long overdue for these cities to get the piece of the cake too.
anyway, i read in the davao news that the malaysian-made garbage bins alone cost them P120 million for 20,000 pieces at P6,000 each and they are about to order 20,000 pieces more this month with 10 new garbage truck compactors to boost their existing compactors. i can not name any city in the philippines that would spend almost P500 million just for garbage segretation alone. in phil. standards, it's a luxury. now is the time for other mindanao cities to shine coz davao is concentrating nowadays on socio-economics. duterte, their mayor said in an interview that he don't want more conventions to be held in davao, his exact words are "palihug ayaw na mo pag sige ug convention sa davao kay sobra na kaayo, daghan pa ubang siyudad nga pwede ninyo kaadtoan, gikapoy nami sa kadaghan sa mga conventions dri sa syudad". funny but only davao's mayor could do that.
so cdo is the next boom city in mindanao after davao, and after 5 to 10 years i hope it will rub its luck on gensan or zamboanga or iligan or butuan or surigao. even bettter if done at the same time. conclusion, mindanao cities should not follow the examples shown by luzon and visayan cities. "i got what you don't have yehey! attitude". if cdo is good in ICT give it to them, if davao has lots of tourist attractions give it to them too, fish capital? give it to gensan. win-win situation. isn't it nice to see in the future cdo-iligan as the pineapple, industrial, ICT kings... gensan-cotabato the pineapple, fish capital, davao the banana, tourism and bimp-eage center of trade, zamboanga the internation barter capital, butuan-surigao the tourism and gateway to the visayas. mindanao is the land of promise indeed believe me. with the current government brouhahahas, if something goes wrong and we all scattered like goat shits, i will be in mindanao the soonest time possible.
FrancisXavier June 28th, 2006, 04:02 AM well said.

Bai, I don't think Robinsons CdO can be considered a mall, for now... However, if it expands, then it will be a full-pledged mall! Ororama Megacenter is a mall.... However it caters to Class C and D clients... So, that means CdO has at least 4 malls...
By the way, I have heard that the lot presently occupied by the Gold City Coliseum was already sold to Robinsons just recently... I hope this is true. They can expand and become a real mall, not an appendage... HEHEHE!
However what's more exciting to hear is that SM Prime has bought the 4 hectare+ lot right in front of Gaisano Mall (the one which houses the House of Travel and Suzuki Cagayan now). I wonder what they plan to do with the lot... Figure it out... HEHEHE! I heard Gaisano owner Stephen Gaisano is quite disturbed by this new development... He should be!!! I expect to see expansions in Gaisano City Mall pretty soon...
That's about it!
FrancisXavier June 28th, 2006, 09:47 AM Really? oh no... i would want that huge vacant lot to be a park with lagoon and palm trees... HMMm.... Maybe it's for SM's future developments since wala pang any corporate news about CDO expansion. Well, if not a park, i'd like to see high rise condos there...not mall...we don't need much mall na.. we have so much to sustain..

FrancisXavier June 28th, 2006, 10:02 AM hindi talaga to pwedeng maging CDO.. Kc the developments in this pic is more in the west bank, w/c is supposed to be the area of Carmen district. Yung Velez area dito parang 100 years younger compared to what it is right now.

Parang magkaparehas lang nga ang plastada ng bridges ng cdo at davao sa kanilang mga rivers, from this pic parang the bolton bridge is the bridge along national hi-way in cdo and the bankerohan bridge is the carmen bridge. but this pic shows the part of bankerohan river side with the cluster of buildings belongs to san pedro and magallanes streets. a little more sana to the left will show the old downtown of davao while a little more to the right side of the picture is the matina and ecoland area. an honest mistake manileño. i guess cdo already posted an aerial of carmen area in this thread, pwede natin i pagtagpo to show the similarity of the landscape

I think SM will build another mall which is nearer the city center. That would challenge Gaisano to make drastic improvements & expansion. In the end it's a win-win situation.
valium June 28th, 2006, 07:20 PM let's leave improvements in each cities course strategically. davao not getting an IT zone at this time even with numerous ict companies is not a sign of negative progress. mindanao has long been disregarded by the rest of the country, and amidst the insurgencies, mindanao in the 90s still able to present a decent metropolitan, that is davao.

yes, it is a well written reaction... however...
we all know that both cdo and davao are progressive, and we are aware of the fact that cdo has already established an it zone, while davao still has to iron out specifications on establishing a decent it zone. BUT no one is saying that it is a sign of "negative progress" (if ever there really is such a thing) the only concern here is that davao seems to be resting on its laurel too much. we... well n this case... you, can say that davao's development plan is done in "phases", but is this the right direction for davao?dont you think you are sitting too long on one phase?.... i say bring up the ante!
now with regards to davao losing appetite for MICE (meetings, conventions, etc...) thi wasnt the case during the last bid for the ad congress, the last time i heard, rody was fuming.
in my POV, too much reliance on one product or service, as you have been saying here (davao with tourism, cdo in it and fish in gensan) could be fatal and suicidal, considering that we are in the age of globalization, competitiveness should be a priority, you can not be competitive if you are only focusing on one area of development. we like to say that each place has to diversify and innovate ideas. think out of the box and utilize all capabilities. focusing in just one development area wont make the economy dynamic. we have seen this to one city in the visayas before, too much dependence on one product led them to their downfall.
with your reaction about luzon and visayan cities "i got what you dont have, yehey!" attititude, dont you think with your suggestion of focusing on one development area (here we go again... davao for tourism, cdo for it, gensan for fish) will just encourage this kind of attitude? it will be a double bladed sword that could deliver the fatal blow.... while limiting their development, it will encourage the "yehey" attitude.
a little of everything everywhere is good. too much of one thing is myopic.
hezron June 29th, 2006, 02:34 AM ^^
i respect your opinion in every aspect valium.
"we... well n this case... you, can say that davao's development plan is done in "phases", but is this the right direction for davao?dont you think you are sitting too long on one phase?.... i say bring up the ante!"
i think there's no such thing as "sitting too long on one phase" for davao, you can not done it overnight so to speak. 5 years of building boom, 3 years of establishing peace and order, now on socio-economics... i think davao is doing it slowly but surely, let's just ignore davao for 2 years and focus developments in other areas.
"now with regards to davao losing appetite for MICE (meetings, conventions, etc...) thi wasnt the case during the last bid for the ad congress, the last time i heard, rody was fuming."
well, i based my reaction on his latest radio interview.
"with your reaction about luzon and visayan cities "i got what you dont have, yehey!" attititude, dont you think with your suggestion of focusing on one development area (here we go again... davao for tourism, cdo for it, gensan for fish) will just encourage this kind of attitude? it will be a double bladed sword that could deliver the fatal blow.... while limiting their development, it will encourage the "yehey" attitude."
if mindanao cities wont think as one, that would be the case. it's nice to assume that all cities can compete in all aspects but sadly it's not the case in reality. other cities may focus on fish industry but they don't have the kind of sea and ocean access that gensan is enjoying all the time. one city can not change it's landscape to mimic what davao gulf, mountains and samal island can offer. it's not about limiting development, it's about maximizing your city's best potential. you can not put silicon valley in all U.S. cities and i think newyork is not complaining. mindanao must think as one, not compete with each other. that's the key i guess, davao must be proud of what cdo can offer and vice versa. cdo + gensan + davao + other mindanao cities = one hell of an island.

Cagayan de Oro City (23 June) -- A foreign-invested furniture factory will be established in the city soon.
City Mayor Vicente Emano said he received a call from Ambassador Raul Rabe informing him that a Taiwanese investor is set to open a business here.
Aside from the furniture factory, Emano said the company will also engage in manufacturing of wood tiles and wood chips, which would be exported to Japan, USA and other countries.
"Ato kini nga gikalipay kay ang maong langyawng factory makatabang sa ekonomiya sa dakbayan ug makahatag usab oportunidad sa panarbaho sa katawhan (I am pleased with this new development because the foreign factory will further boost the city's economic and business climate, as well as provide more jobs to more residents)", Emano added.
Even as the city is now seeing the fruits of the mayor's trade missions to China and Taiwan last year, Emano is now preparing for another mission - this time to Australia and New Zealand.
Emano's target date for the next trade mission is by the last quarter of this year. (The Power / Cagayan de Oro LGU)

Sakto ka, Bai... The Floirendos own the lot in front of Gaisano and the one in Davao... Here in CdO, they own Oro Ham which is one of the best local ham makers...

I totally agree with you, Bai! Another commercial center to rise in the said area would mean CHAOS... The lot beside Nazareno Church (the church building beside Gaisano City Mall) is also for sale... I heard a hotel is planned to rise on the said vicinity...
WawaY[625] June 29th, 2006, 12:33 PM sabagay, tingnan mo, most cities with many malls have lost the luster fo their downtown..fewer trendy boutiques, appliance stores and fastfood (save for trendy restaurants )

But remember SM doesn't buy a prime comm'l lot to build hotels...I'm 90% sure it would be another retail establishment. It just makes me think...ganun ba ka dami ang untaped market ng CDO that Robinson's is expanding, SM is expanding (& probably building another mall), Plaza Fair is expanding, Gaisano City is expanding & if that weren't enough Ayala is building an entire business district :weird:

Tama... Actually i made my own perspective for the future development of such piece of land. A park with a lagoon, fountains, palm trees, and philippine flags in front.. Tapos a grand hotel sa back drop, ala Waterfront Lahug na style.. Para majestic...lol
I wud then want to see pigeons in this park...ala milan....lol again..
Let me scan it, and i'll post it sometime.
Ady001 June 30th, 2006, 09:30 AM CDO better than Davao City?
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts
PANGIL Bay is calm even as typhoon Caloy was battering Visayas and Luzon. If the sea is calm, so is the prevailing peace and order condition in Lanao del Norte towns.
In my previous travels in these parts, the towns of Tubod, Kolambogan, Maigo, Bacolod and Kauswagan looked like ghost towns. These days, private vehicles and passenger buses travel here day and night.
Many displaced families during the armed conflicts in the area have been resettled by the government with the aid of the United Nations Development Program (for Internally Displaced Peoples) and have resumed farming and other economic activity.
Iligan City being near to these towns is presently bustling with activity. The landscape changed with the prospects of peace accord in sight. Even the Union cement logo has been changed by Holsim although engine of the National Steel Corporation is still idle to date despite the promise and hope for its resuscitation.
I brought the kids to Maria Cristina Falls. The majestic waterfalls never fail to impress guests who are received congenially by the NPC personnel manning Agus 6 and 7. The kids were given a quick education how water runs a generator, which in turn provide electric power to nearly all of Mindanao.
Cagayan de Oro City or for that matter Northern Mindanao, beats the south in gross products. That is why maybe the malls here seem to be growing bigger and with more shoppers than Davao. Even the hotels are more expensive than Davao City's despite the fact that they pale in comparison when it comes to amenities, function rooms and accessibility to mountain and beach resorts.
Right now Cagayan de Oro is in a monstrous traffic gridlock owing to the repairs of Carmen Bridge. The work is at snails pace and nobody seemed to mind. City Hall authorities, despite the fact that their offices are just at the foot of the bridge, are not even angry the workers are using crude equipment to do the repairs. In four occasions that I crossed the one-way bridge I only counted four people working while the rest are sitting on the ledge leisurely smoking cigarettes and gossiping.
There's a new hotel, Mallberry Hotel, that's right beside Robinson's that is setting a new trend in Cagayan de Oro. It was fully booked when we got there.
Right now part of the hotel is still under construction. It's going to be the prime destination in this city.
In Butuan, they have what they dub as resort hotel right in the heart of the city. Probably meant to justify the expensive rates. But Dotties Place is excellent. Big rooms with a swimming pool just right across your room, is a big come-on. Progress on the reconstruction of the Maharlika Highway is on high gear in some, but very slow in others. But there has been a big improvement since I last travel there about two months ago.
The Bayugan-San Francisco stretch is almost completely cemented. They are now working on SF-Rosario. The Daewo Construction has finished concreting the Trento portion while they are about to pour cement to the remaining unpaved link towards Rosario. If President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo shows herself more often in Agusan, you can be sure that before Christmas Day Butuan and Surigao City will just be less than 3 hours away. I will be remiss though if I will not give credit to Secretary Jesus Dureza for the peace that is prevailing in Cotabato and Lanao and for the progress and faster pace of infrastructure development in Mindanao.
Back home we all agreed there's nothing like Davao City where we can live in peace and quiet knowing fully well that our city mayor, Rodrigo Durterte, is awake while the rest of us are in deep slumber.
I have to comment on this. It's correct, but maybe because CDO's location is a plus. Davao kasi is landlocked while CDO has Visayas open for trade. Prospects lang, thank you...
Ady001 June 30th, 2006, 09:48 AM Hey, i would like to comment about that weird "city rivalry."
I have to say that the greatest asset of the city is its longevity man jud. for example, Iloilo is small but powerful; Cagayan is small but had a lot of malls :bash: :)); Davao is young but its progress is fast. I think every city has its own strengths and weakneses. For example, Iloilo and Cebu benefits from its oldness and strategic location, as well as CDO. Then Davao benefits from its largeness, thus opening more sites for possible land development and expansion.
although, i get the rivalry though. LETS NOT MAKE THIS FORUM A BATTLEFIELD GUYS.
Ady001 June 30th, 2006, 09:50 AM But we have to look at the dark sides of cities. Cebu is small and has to reclaim land, as well as Iloilo. magulo ang building arrangement sa CDO (personal opinion; when I went there, putting a church in front of Gaisano is a weird idea, no hard feelings,) then Davao is placed in a landlocked area with only the celebes sea faced. So, there are weaknesses of cities....
junax June 30th, 2006, 10:47 AM ^^ i think cdo and davao thread are already tired of seeing posts about rivalry with other cities. as one forumer posted here, let's all unite. cdo and davao are progressing in its own course. no buts and ifs. mindanao in general will continue to progress. what davao can not do well, cdo will carry it on. what cdo can not do, zamboanga will compensate. every mindanao city is unique. mindanao as a team. that's what we should do to battle it out with the so called giants of visayas and luzon and to the world. amen.
ergit222 June 30th, 2006, 10:47 AM Personally, I like the settings of both Cebu and Davao because you can go swimming to white sand beaches and mountain trekking all in a day. Amenities such hotels, bars, malls etc are available just minutes away. By the way, great cities like Hong Kong and Vancouver have this kind of settings too. The way I see CDO is also a good city for business and adventure (white water) but she still has to prove her worth as a truly tourist destination.
boju June 30th, 2006, 10:50 AM Actually Nzareno church infront of Gaisano is built first long time before the mall built. I dunno why the church official agreed to built the mall right beside. That's why when robinson had plan to build its mall infront of gaisano (the floriendos property), the church official as what i've know they oppossed it because thier church now is so crowded at madagdagan pa ng isang mall baka maging palengke na....
WawaY[625] June 30th, 2006, 05:50 PM LETS NOT MAKE THIS FORUM A BATTLEFIELD GUYS.
YES! lets leave the inter city bickering to the other cities, in Mindanao..WE ARE ONE!
Sera June 30th, 2006, 07:53 PM Personally, I like the settings of both Cebu and Davao because you can go swimming to white sand beaches and mountain trekking all in a day. CDO is good as an Industrial center because of its strategic location. As for Tourism, CDO doesn't have the historical relevance of Cebu, Davao or Iloilo but the city has lots of potential tourism spots that can be developed in the future. We should just be concerned about the progress of the cities not only in Mindanao but in the entire Philippines.
:bash: No offense but its really odd that a lot of cities in the Philippines are boasting about progress but if you look at the Philippines context as a whole, our progress is "Tame" compared to that of Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam or Singapore...Unfortunately the Philipppines today is still the sick man of Asia kaya dapat instead of CDO/Davao/Cebu Unite or Mindanao Unite. We should say "All Filipinos unite!" :)

City launches website
THE City Government logs off from the month-long celebration of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Month Friday evening with the launching of a website and the switching on of the barangay telephone system.
The ceremonies took place at the Kiosko Kagawasan in Divisoria at 7:00 p.m. during the Night Cafe.
Acting City Administrator Wilma Polley-Rugay, chairperson of the City Government's ICT Group, disclosed that the activity marks a milestone in the ICT history of the city as it launched two important projects that will further strengthen Cagayan de Oro's position as the ICT goldmine in the country.
Aside from the launching, a video conference was also set up for Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and the undersecretary of the Commission on ICT.
An awarding of the best booth in the week-long exhibit on the latest ICT gadgets, software and hardware products and other ICT services by the different ICT players in the city was also held at Kiosko Kagawasan.
Among the ICT players that joined the exhibit at the Kiosko Kagawasan were Philcom, Global Chips, Dataworld, Magnet Technologies, Graphic-All-In-One-Store, Syntac Techs, Microtrade and MackMayer.
Friday evening's logging off ceremony, which anchored on the ICT Month theme "Utilizing ICT for Commerce and Tourism," was highlighted with the launching of the three-page website of the City Government and the switching on of the Telepono sa Barangay project of Mayor Emano.
Barangay telephone
The Telepono sa Barangay is a P49 million project which aims to provide telecommunications access to the city's remotest barangays and consequently open the floodgates of economic development and technological advancement even in the city's hinterland areas.
Among the barangays that will benefit from the Telepono sa Barangay project are Mambuaya, Bayanga, Balubal, Indahag, F.S. Catanico, Baikingon, San Simon, Pagatpat, Tignapoloan, Dansolihon, Tumpagon, Pigsag-an, Tuburan, Taglimao, Tagpangi, Pagalungan and Besigan.
Aside from the hinterland barangays, five offices of the City Government situated outside of the City Hall compound were also installed with the same telephone system and are now capable of directly getting through the City Hall telephone line without dialing the existing public switch telephone network.
These offices included the City Health Office, J.R. Borja Memorial City Hospital, City Engineer's Office, Cagayan de Oro City Police Office, and the COMCENTER.
ICT leaders in the country have recognized the vast ICT investment potential of Cagayan de Oro, branding the city as an ICT Goldmine. (CIO)

Grand Europa: More than just great housing
IF YOU are looking for a location to build a house and making it a home, opt for the wiser choice of going for far more than just a dwelling. Aim for a home in a thriving community where you can live the kind of lifestyle you have always wanted. Be part of the Grand Europa community and live the grand way of life.
Grand Europa is a master-planned development of the country's No. 1 developer, Crown Communities, whose reputation far exceeds their homebuyers' expectations, from building exquisite quality houses, to innovative and attractive house designs, to creating living, breathing communities where homeowners thrive and enjoy a favored lifestyle.
While the commitment of other housing developers end at selling the houses they have built, Crown Communities goes the extra mile of giving value to family and community life. Grand Europa is more than just lovely themed houses; it also stands for actual living communities where homeowners get to know each other, have fun and bond as one whole, living community.
Grand Europa has undertaken many projects for their homeowners' welfare, the most recent of which was a Pre-father's Day Special last June 17.
Exciting and fun activities such as the On-the-Spot Painting Contest and Talent Show were conducted, participated in by Grand Europa homeowners and representatives from various schools in Cagayan de Oro such as Xavier University, Corpus Christi, City Central, among others.
The Grand Europa Homeowners Association, in cooperation with their professional property manager, organized a regular calisthenics and ballroom dancing sessions for their senior citizens. This provides homeowners in their twilight years a venue to socialize and exercise, thus promoting healthy living as well as harmonious relationships within the community.
Taking their concern for the homeowners' welfare a notch higher, Grand Europa and its property manager sponsored a free anti-rabies vaccination last June 23 for the homeowners' pets. This ensures that all animals within the community are safe for both their owners and their neighbors.
Grand Europa also manifests its environmental concern by creating a community that is one with nature, with sprawling trees and blooming flowers found year-round all over the subdivision. Homeowners who jog or walk around Grand Europa during sunrise can feel the morning mist, hear the chirping birds, and smell the refreshing scent of newly-cut grass.
It has a nursery that nurtures ornamental plants, flowers, and trees that thrive on organic material, ensuring Grand Europa a steady supply of plants and flowers for their surroundings all year round. Plans to build a butterfly sanctuary are on the way, and a mango orchard is currently being developed to further enhance the natural environment of the subdivision.
The subdivision also has a lush nature park that affords the homeowners the pleasure and privilege to commune with Mother Nature. Here, the families can hold picnics and spend quality time together, and where kids can be, well, just kids. Friends and neighbors can gather and socialize at these natural surroundings, thereby building stronger relationships as they savor the fresh air and take pleasure and comfort from the natural landscape of green grass, towering trees and blossoming flowers.
To further strengthen their community living, Grand Europa is currently negotiating for the establishment of a parish and a school inside its vicinity. When this comes to fruition, Grand Europa will have further enhanced the essence of their homeowners' community life.
Clearly, Grand Europa does not rest on its laurels of building quality and charming houses; they take their homeowners' welfare and lifestyle to a higher level. Because Grand Europa is simply more than just housing, it's a grand way of living.

They're just doing a little renovation and a little re-painting of the Exterior of the cinemas... Finish na ang 1 and 2... Ang 3 and 4 ang gitrabaho ron! I watched Superman in Cinema 3 or 4 (di ko sigurado aha exactly) 3 days ago... I was surprised... If I'm not mistaken, I think they installed new speakers... Abi nako THX (dream on... HEHEHE!)... Bitaw, uy! I'm not sure if the nice quality of the sound is because of the movie itself or because of new speakers... The seats of the cinemas, however, need to be replaced with newer, more comfy ones... They're at least 15 years old na baya! Karaan na kaayo... HEHEHE!
The skywalk will actually connect the mall to the street behind the nothern part of the Rosario Strip! Didto na dayon tingali and drop off point sa mga pasajero sa jeepney! The renovation of the area where Smart, Globe, Nicole and Pancake House is will probably be finished in 2 months.
Robinsons Department Store will open on the 21st of this month...
I passed by Ketkai ganina mga 6pm... Gubot kaayo! Puno halos tanan parking spaces... Concert man diay sa Cascades...
Ady001 July 1st, 2006, 01:30 PM BTW, Boju, about Hillsborough Pointe, I got lost in the forums; could you repost them? I'll bookmark the page. About the cost of the lot and the house....
