So, agree ako kung ipagpaliban nalng muna ng ligislative building and construct first the more important one like the Oro River Blvd. Kung nasikipan na ang mga councilors sa kanilang legislative hall ngayon ay dapat maghanap nalang sila ng marentahan na building or renovate some parts of the present hall to add some spaces.
agree din ako sa sinabi ni boju kumbaga why wasting while can be later, dapat ang bigyan muna nila ng pansin ay kung papaano kikita ang local government at ang mamayan as a whole.:ohno:
bariQ March 28th, 2008, 06:50 AM tama ka @farirah kung totoo man ang plan ni V-mayor na ilipat sakasakali ang government offices ay masyado pang malawak ang landfill sa my carmen zayas area, naaaalala ko kasi nung kabataan ko pa na jan kami nanghuhuli ng gagamba and the place is too green and too wide in terms of future development.:lol::lol:

ph_matrix March 28th, 2008, 07:05 AM Groundbreaking Of Legislative Building Set Next Week
by Sandra B. Tadeo/ City Information Office
The city government of Cagayan de Oro has set the groundbreaking of the legislative complex building beside the city hall compound on April 2, this year.
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula disclosed that the groundbreaking ceremony will be held in time for the scheduled visit of local government officials from Tainan City in Taiwan. Tainan, the second largest city in Taiwan next to Taipei is a sister city of Cagayan de Oro by virtue of a sisterhood pact forged between the two cities when former city mayor and now Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano led a trade mission there in 2005. Mayor Jaraula said that the legislative building will house the offices of the city vice mayor, members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) and the SP employees. He added that a one-hectare open space will be set aside in front of the legislative building to be used for commercial purposes where the city government is expected to earn millions in pesos. The city chief executive explained that the development of the vacant lot near the city hall compound will not only be purely expenses on the part of the city government but will ultimately be a new source of income for the city. Mayor Jaraula also revealed that aside from the construction of the legislative building, the city government will also pursue the development of the Cagayan de Oro River Boulevard which will initially span an area from the Burgos-Chaves to Burgos-Cruz Taal streets.

ph_matrix March 28th, 2008, 07:06 AM RTA Implements Temporary Rerouting Along Velez Street
by Sandra B. Tadeo/ City Information Office
The Roads and Traffic Administration (RTA) informed all motorists that it implemented a one-way traffic along Velez Street from Luna to Kalambaguhan for vehicles coming from the eastern side of the city starting yesterday afternoon.
RTA Administrator Filipino Amoguis disclosed that the temporary implementation of the one-way traffic in the said area is done in support of the on-going road concreting project in the said area. This means that all motorists going to the eastern side of the city passing through Velez Street must turn left to Mabini Street, right turn to Tiano Brothers Street, right turn to Abellanosa Street towards destination. The RTA likewise advised all vehicles from Cogon Market or Divisoria going to the western part of the city through the Maharlika Bridge to pass through Corrales Avenue and left turn to Recto Avenue towards their destination. The RTA is exhorting the cooperation and understanding of the motorists who are affected by the temporary re-rerouting of vehicles along Velez Street.

ph_matrix March 28th, 2008, 07:07 AM Mayor Jaraula Seeks Support From Media For Govt Efforts
by Sandra B. Tadeo/ City Information Office
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula called on the members of the media to help the city government in running the affairs of the city and building a new Cagayan de Oro.
In last night’s induction of officers of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas where he was the guest speaker, Mayor Jaraula admitted that the role of managing a budding metropolis cannot be left alone in the hands of one man. “I cant realize all these dreams without the support of KBP and other members of the media,” Mayor Jaraula pointed out. The city chief executive emphasized the important role the media in informing the people about the programs and projects of the government and helping them understand how all these can benefit the entire population. Mayor Jaraula explained that it is only when people understand the intentions of all the development efforts undertaken by the local government that they will support these efforts and help achieve the goals of such programs. Mayor Jaraula, whose policy against sidewalk and street vending is not well-received by those affected vendors, told the media practitioners that it is a given fact that people will either like or dislike the policies of their leaders. “In the end, what matters is that you do what is right and be consistent with what you believe because I know that there are still more people (in the world) who are reasonable than those who are unreasonable,” the city chief executive contended. Mayor Jaraula is optimistic that with the support from the media, a lot of things can be done to build a new Cagayan de Oro that can be showcased to the global community as an ideal tourism and investment destination. He likewise congratulated the KBP officers were sworn into office by Justice Edgardo Lloren of the Court of Appeals. The new set of officers of the local KBP chapter are Tito Monterde of DXWZ-FM as chair; Allan Gonzaga of DXTR-FM as vice chair; Ryan Carbon of DXKB-FM as secretary; Corazon Cui of DXRJ-FM as treasurer; Allan Bajolo of DXBL-FM as auditor and Frank Mendez of ABC 5 as Standard Authority. Also sworn into office are KBP directors Albino Quinlog, Jr. of Bombo Radio for AM stations; Roy Villaro of RPN 9 for Television; and Victoria Uy of DXNU-FM for FM stations.

dark_knight_detectve March 28th, 2008, 12:51 PM It's up to the Donkoy's passionate long term plan for CdeO. I think landfill area is big enough for both the plant and for the proposed (one-stop shopping) government offices. ^^
youre right again farirah. CdeO's progression has become so palpable that the she needs to ulitilize other barangays so as to accomodate other government offices as well as loosen the tightening gridlock of vehicles. the landfill is a perfect place for the proposed city hall because of two things: first of all, the landfill is a potential place for a commercial complex and a subdivision due to its area that is still unused, and, second, so that the local government will be forced to clean the landfill and somehow convert it into a more decent community.
dark_knight_detectve March 28th, 2008, 01:00 PM sino ba owners ng Maxandrea? matanong nga natin...
gearX, would be kind enough to ask the management of maxandrea if they are really pushing thru with their 20 storey building? you seem to have a talent of knowing everything.
dark_knight_detectve March 28th, 2008, 01:28 PM yup it would be the tallest not because it stands at 21 storeys but because it would be taller than 64 meters. to clarify, coz i've been following hi-rises in the vismin area for the love of it (manila got thousands of it for heaven's sake so i lost interest in that area), it is a known fact not to rely solely on floor count if we have to get the height of the building. if the proposed LKK hotel would be the tallest in mindanao once built, and if the developers wanted it to be that way, it is safe to say that they are going to build a structure taller than a 64 meter building, be it 17 or 21. marco polo is known at 18 floor count because of elevator buttons but if we have to look closely at the picture below (actually been posted numerous times already in other threads), it stands at 21 floors because some floors like the lobby, 5th floor and the top floors are merged to get a higher floor to ceiling ratio.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/marcoxmas.jpg
lobbies are usually 2 floors high, so if the LKK hotel is 21 livable floors in design, it would still be taller than marco polo because the actual height divided by standard floor to ceiling height would stand at 22 floor counts. if the LKK construction will commence this year, by 2010 or earlier marco polo will cease to be the tallest building in mindanao (assuming that no other taller building is going to rise in other cities).
for now, marco polo is still the tallest at 64 meters high or 21 floor count equivalent.
:)
i think that all the people here in ssc cdo are well aware that a buildng is not measured in terms of its floor counts but instead of the actual height, either in meters or feet. what im trying to point out is that the 21 storey hotel of LKK is not actually 21 but 23 "because the actual height divided by standard floor to ceiling height."

maybe it's just me, but i sense a little sarcasm with this post. i am not saying ssc cdo are not aware of it, i'm just clarifying that MP is not 18 storeys high and the propose LKK hotel is still taller when finished. i could not found that post, of your supposed to be "pointing out", so i wondered. sorry guys if i seem onion skinned with this, but aside from promoting our own cities in our respective forums, i am also supporting the ideals of correct and just information as much as possible here in SSC. and i don't think my post is offensive to deserve a little sling shot, a simple "thank you" sana for that clarification would do, to promote friendship among forumers.

GearX March 29th, 2008, 03:38 AM Gov’t primes jatropha industry (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW032908/content.php?id=051)
PUERTO PRINCESA — The government is offering interested jatropha investors technical expertise and bigger perks, as it pump primes the industry for increased local demand and possible exports next year.
National Biofuels Board Executive Director Ramon G. Santos said at the First Luzon Jatropha Forum in Palawan yesterday that the agency will draft a road map for the program.
Aside from tax benefits, other government perks due choice investors, and crop insurance for farmers will be included in the jatropha program.
For its part, lead agency Philippine National Oil Co.-Alternative Fuels Corp. (PNOC-AFC) is offering its expertise in jatropha farming to entice both farmers who will plant the seeds and investors who will buy them.
PNOC-AFC Chairman Renato S. Velasco said a recent study by the University of Michigan cited the Philippines as being the fifth most advanced in jatropha research.
"In the region, we are even number three," he said.
The PNOC-AFC, together with the academe, is continuously conducting wide-scale scientific work on jatropha. Some of the studies aim to find out the best variety of jatropha suitable for different parts of the country.
Mr. Velasco said, "Our budget this year is P80 million. That will go into both financial and technical assistance to jatropha farmers [and investors] around the country."
But without an industrial biodiesel refinery onstream, neither PNOC-AFC nor its partners have produced commercial quantities of jatropha oil in the Philippines.
The PNOC-AFC has promised it will able to produce commercial quantities of jatropha oil by October. "We have the equipment already. So we just need the seeds to feed into the equipment," Mr. Velasco said last Thursday.
PNOC-AFC and partners currently have about 2,000 hectares planted to jatropha in Palawan, Fort Magsaysay, Cagayan de Oro, Agusan del Sur, and General Santos.
From this first wave of planting, Mr. Velasco said some 400 million tons of jatropha crude oil could be produced in 2009. It will be in excess of the 150 million liters required by law next year.
The Biofuels Law, or Republic Act 9367, requires the blending of 2% biodiesel into regular diesel in 2009.
Coco methyl ester, presently used as the biofuel additive, is already in oversupply so jatropha oil will further swell production. Mr. Velasco said the jatropha program even promotes efficient land utilization. "If it were not for jatropha, these lands would not be utilized," he said, as he surveyed a 70-hectare jatropha nursery in the southern part of Palawan. — M. K. C. Conti
GearX March 29th, 2008, 04:09 AM JUAN SIA EYE’S ORO TOP POST (http://balatucan.wordpress.com/2008/03/28/juan-sia-eyes-oro-top-post/)
March 28, 2008
FROM Mindanao Gold Star Daily
Former city councilor Juan Sia yesterday confirmed that he was seriously considering on launching a bid for the city mayorship in 2010. If plans don’t miscarry, Sia, who served as councilor during the Magtajas and Emano administrations, would run for Mayor under the group of Rep. Rolando Uy of the City’s First District.
The former councilor is widely perceived to be one of the major factors for Uy’s victory in the City’s 1st District in May last year. Uy’s 2008 victory was one of the biggest upsets in Cagayan de Oro politics; it was an uphill battle in that them barangay chairperson faced Michelle Spiers, then incumbent Vice Mayor, lawyer Antonio Soriano, a former vice mayor; and ex councilor Annie Daba.
But political observers said Sia’s backing of Uy’s congressional bid and the former councilors rapport with many of the city’s barangay chairperson spelt the difference for the leader of Carmen. Sia once represented the influential Association of Barangay Council in the city council. Sia was reluctant in revealing his political plans but he confirmed that he was planning to run for Mayor under Uy’s group. Sia’s revelation came in the wake of reports that Uy has started to beef up his political stock with the help of a group of barangay chairpersons who were once closely associated with the Padayon Pilipino, a party led by Vice Mayor Vicente Emano.
One of the barangay chairpersons is Eric Salcedo, the leader of Gusa, who was recently named by Uy as his point man in barangay affairs. Salcedo was a candidate for councilor of the Padayon Pilipino in last year’s election. He lost in the race.
The barangay chairpersons, according to sources, have started organizing themselves against Padayon Pilipino in preparation for the 2010 elections.

NFA-Misamis Oriental to sell rice directly to markets
By Danilo V. Adorador III
TO HELP stave off the spikes in the prices of rice, the provincial office of the National Food Authority (NFA) in Misamis Oriental said it will retail large quantities of rice in public markets.
The move, which would see NFA office employees turned into temporary vendors, is aimed at preventing the current prices of commercial rice from rising further, said NFA Provincial Manager Victoria Duray.
"You can call this a form of market intervention. We just feel that there is a pressing need to stabilize the prices of commercial rice, and what better way than to influence the market itself," Duray told Sun.Star.
She said the mass sale would not affect the supply of cheap rice for the entire region, as Northern Mindanao currently has 300,000 bags of rice. Another 150,000 bags are coming next Tuesday, she added.
Scarcity
Weeks of heavy buying have already strained the supply of NFA grains retailers, who are receiving an average allocation of 30 bags per week. Cagayan de Oro has 15 authorized NFA grains retailers.
"Our authorized retailers are already complaining that their retail outlets are being mobbed. We feel that there is a need to infuse more supply in the market, and we can do this if the NFA itself will initiate the retailing," she added.
As a pilot test, NFA-Misamis Oriental will initially release 100 to 200 bags of cheap rice in Cagayan de Oro's Cogon and Carmen markets Saturday.
If the maiden mass sale proves successful, the NFA official said they would make the NFA-initiated retailing weekly.
Prices
Duray attributes the upward movement of rice prices to low production and high cost of fertilizers.
Exacerbating the scarcity, she said, is the hike in the price of corn grits, which now currently pegs at P24 per kilo-prompting most corn eaters to shift to rice, the country's staple food.
And then there is the excessive buying.
NFA rice buyers are already allowed a maximum of three kilos per day, but unscrupulous buyers skew the rule, Duray said.
"They do this by buying rice in all NFA retail outlets. Some even would pay small children to buy for them," she said.
Earlier, the National Rice Farmers Council warned that the country was facing a serious rice supply crisis, which could cause the price of rice to soar to P40.
"The traders will definitely take advantage of the limited supply, while the government will be dependent on the imported rice for its buffer stock," said Jimmy Tadeo, the group's chairman.
The Philippines consumes about 11.9 million metric tons (13.12 million US tons) of rice annually, most of which is grown domestically. But dwindling domestic production and corruption in the rice supply chain have created a recurrent shortfall of about 10 percent.
The government has to purchase about 2 million metric tons (2.20 million US tons) from the international market every year, making the Philippines the world's biggest rice importer. (With AP)

P218-million lotto jackpot prize
By Annabelle L. Ricalde
TOMORROW could be a different Sunday for some lucky bettors.
The jackpot prize for Lotto 6/49 draw went up to P218,735,564 million after no one picked the right number combination in last Thursday's draw, the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) website said.
And the prize money is going up as it is expected to grow by the hour till drawing time Sunday night, according to PCSO Cagayan de Oro chief lottery officer Mario Pelisco.
"The jackpot prize will go up every one hour until drawing time on Sunday," Pelisco said.
Pelisco said it is the biggest prize money for the 6/49 draw since six people won the P202-million pot in October 2002.
It is enough to make anyone's dreams come true and Cagayan de Oro residents have brushed up their "pre-betting rituals" for Sunday's night draw.
Alma Bacon, a loan collector from Zone 2, Barangay Agusan, said she already have her six number combination -- a mix from the birth dates of her husband and children.
"Maka eskwela jud akong anak sa college kung madaug nako ang jackpot (My child would surely be able to go to college if I win the jackpot," Bacon said.
Jeepney driver Gomer Santi dreams of a better life as he buys his lotto tickets in Cogon public market Friday.
Santi said he really want to win the jackpot to provide security for his family especially now that he is old and sick.
He said he always buy lotto tickets using money set aside from his meager earnings driving a jeepney to Macabalan and Cogon market every day.
"Who knows if it's my luck to win," Santi said.
Regular lotto bettor Shirley Octubre said she plans to buy her lotto ticket Saturday and go to the Church to pray for luck afterwards.
Octubre said she plans to spread her winnings to her relatives and friends.

dark_knight_detectve March 29th, 2008, 02:22 PM Four-star hotel set to rise on Limketkai property (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031408/content.php?id=042)
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Limketkai Sons, Inc. will start construction of a 21-storey, 250-room hotel complex within the year in the company’s 30-hectare commercial complex in this city’s Lapasan district.
http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031408/limketkaimall.jpg
The Limketkai commercial center is considered the leading shopping center in the city since it is the most accessible and most complete in Northern Mindanao.
Alfonso Y. Lim, chief executive officer of the company, said the hotel project would cost roughly P700 million and is expected to be completed by 2010.
The hotel will be the tallest structure in Mindanao, and will have a four-star classification. The hotel complex will have the usual amenities and facilities such as a ballroom, a function room, a coffee shop, and a swimming pool.
It will rise on the west side of the Limketkai commercial complex between the company’s proposed Gateway building on the national highway and Rosario Strip, an upscale area near Robinsons Big R Super Center that hosts boutiques, wellness centers, coffee shops and restaurants.
The Limketkai Group, which is also into agribusiness, is controlled by the Lim family based here.
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula, who earlier commended local businessmen for laying out their investment plans in the city this year, praised the Lims’ hotel project. The mayor has made it a priority to boost the tourism.
Mr. Lim said the hotel will cater to businessmen as well as tourists. When asked if it will compete with the Mallberry Suites business hotel, which is adjacent to the Robinsons mall, Mr. Lim said the new hotel would complement the existing hotel’s operations.
The city has a number of major hotels aside from Mallberry, such as Pryce Plaza, Koresco, and Dynasty Court, catering to as many as 300,000 tourists arriving annually. Koresco Hotel, which was built by Korean investors, serves mainly Korean visitors.
In an interview with BusinessWorld late last year, Mr. Lim said Limketkai Sons, Inc. will convert its property in Lapasan district into the city’s new central business district. The plan includes the new Gateway building on the national highway, the new hotel, and an elevated walkway that connects buildings in the area.
maybe it's just me, but i sense a little sarcasm with this post. i am not saying ssc cdo are not aware of it, i'm just clarifying that MP is not 18 storeys high and the propose LKK hotel is still taller when finished. i could not found that post, of your supposed to be "pointing out", so i wondered. sorry guys if i seem onion skinned with this, but aside from promoting our own cities in our respective forums, i am also supporting the ideals of correct and just information as much as possible here in SSC. and i don't think my post is offensive to deserve a little sling shot, a simple "thank you" sana for that clarification would do, to promote friendship among forumers.
the statement i made earlier was an innocuous one. altruism and humility have always been our virtues here in ssc cdo. let me make it more transparent to you. at first, the LKK hotel was rumored to be 17 storeys. afterwards, rumors spread that it would be 21. sometime later, a forumer from tagoloan said that the LKK hotel is going to be 23 storeys tall. you can find the forumer's statement either in this thread or the previous one. after all the thrill and probe, it was annouced thru press release that it will be 21. maybe the LKK hotel is 21 storeys tall but the actual height is that of a 23. the design of the lobby must be 2 storeys tall and the top floor, where gatherings are held, must also be 2 storeys high. by the way, the maxandrea's gathering hall is located at the top floor. all in all, 21 storeys plus one excess floor for the lobby and another one excess floor for the top floor equals 23. the bottom line is the LKK hotel will be the tallest building in mindanao in 2010, as what the press release from business world said.

well no one's harmed physically oh yeah, and i wasn't contrasting anything either of your post above. in fact, i am the whole time in line with it with regards to LKK and all that. what i am just trying to emphasize is that, in order to promote a friendly air here in ssc, friendly posts should also be treated as friendly as possible. and i'm sorry to tell you that your last reply prior to this one, is packaged with a little sarcasm and singling out a "visitor" (kung yan ang tawag nyo sa mga forumer na hindi CDO ang nakalagay sa location) adding words like "i think that all the people here in ssc cdo or we here in cdo, etc.". afterall, we don't own our cities here in the philippines neither here in ssc forum. if you noticed, i even put a smiley after my first post, so pardon me if i expected too much of a friendly reply.

as far as i am concerned, we forumers operate individually here in SSC. if i damn some threads i expect to get damn myself not davao or any city in particular :ohno:. in fact we do not register in any specific city but to one whole SSC, international forum at that. you may wage war to your known enemies, but at least be friendly to the peaceful majority. we have MODS to enforce rules and let's leave police matters to them.

Marco Polo Davao
Posted by Eugene 19 days ago 1 comment »
If PBCom Tower is the tallest skyscraper in the Philippines, then Marco Polo Hotel is the tallest skyscraper in the largest city (by area) in the Philippines, Davao City. This 18-storey, 245-room hotel is a well-known landmark in Davao City and offers great views of the Davao Gulf, Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the country, and Samal Island.
Photo from the Marco Polo Davao website
Quite visible in Google Maps is the hotel’s swimming pool and right across it to the east is the main campus of Ateneo de Davao, which we featured before. I haven’t been to Davao but the Marco Polo Hotel has the reputation of being the best hotel in the city. If you’ve been there, do you think it deserves that recognition?
Anyway, you might want to check out the official website of Marco Polo Davao where you can check out its list of amenities, book rooms, or see more pictures.
i guess the limketkai hotel will be the tallest in mindanao once it is completed. it will cater 250 rooms with 21 storeys

guys tama naman si @ph matrix let us avoid any related article that can be started for extreme arguments which is not accurate to discuss in the international forum. let us focus in our own city na lang though we have our own freedom of speech i think we should limit it. wala namang masama sa mangarap basta walang masagasaan. focus na rin tayo in promoting CdeO and mindanao in general, magmahalan na lang kaya tayong lahat. peace to all guys :grouphug:
Dreamer's March 30th, 2008, 12:26 AM well LKK hotel will be the tallest skyscrapers in mindanao if completed in 2010 as what the president of the said company mentioned. but we have to take note that 2010 is still far ahead pa hindi natin alam baka bukas or sa isang buwan or next year ay may biglang mag anounce na company to build a skyscrapers na mas mataas pa s LKK hotel here in mindanao kumbaga we never know. for me in my own opinion i will be glad kung mangyari man yon coz what i understand is that building a tall building here in mindanao is a sign of progression, meaning investors are kampanti sila so pagka nagkataon i will be part of the said history and im glad to be as a mindanaon or we are part of it kumbaga kasi iisang island lang tayo.
Dreamer's March 30th, 2008, 12:49 AM JUAN SIA EYE’S ORO TOP POST (http://balatucan.wordpress.com/2008/03/28/juan-sia-eyes-oro-top-post/)
The barangay chairpersons, according to sources, have started organizing themselves against Padayon Pilipino in preparation for the 2010 elections.
hehehe so if for example juan sia win in the election in 2010 he will be the first tsinoy to become a mayor in the city of golden friendship. but i dont think so kasi ang daming rumors na babalik si mang dongkoy for mayor and a lot of potential candidates are there too. di ba si juan sia ang may ari ng juan sia enterprises sa may cogon at sa my divisoria malapit sa skyhi building?

let me apologize for my unethical behaviour for posting a davao article. first of all, i was neither angry nor upset with regards to junax's reaction. if i was, i wouldnt have hesitated to use capital letters. second of all, i didnt use any profanity in order to express my inner most anger but the other fellow did. in fact, i didnt even make any unpleasant remarks. i was merely explaining to the fellow that designing hotels or high rise structures dont follow the usual standard floor to ceiling height. i was under the impression that the standard floor to ceiling height is usually ten feet high. hotel lobbies and conference/gathering halls dont follow the standard height but instead usually utilizes the 20 feet floor to ceiling height. that is why i said that "maybe the LKK hotel is 21 storeys tall but the actual height is that of a 23. the design of the lobby must be 2 storeys tall and the top floor, where gatherings are held, must also be 2 storeys high." if in any way i made anyone uncomfortable, i hope you can accept my condescension.
dark_knight_detectve March 30th, 2008, 02:14 PM About Cagayan de Oro
One looking for a place to retire in or take a vacation or migrate to would be well advised to look at Cagayan de Oro. Over the last few years, the City has grown in leaps and bounds and has undergone many changes and yet has managed to retain its Old World charm.
Stoneware pottery
Salay Paper
The Cagayan de Oro (CDO) of today is a booming trade and tourism center, an education hub, and a population center of over 700,000 people. It is one of the major and fastest growing cities in the Philippines, with all the amenities of a modern city minus the negatives of Metro Manila such as floods, typhoons, and the legendary traffic jams.
White water rafting
San Agustin Cathedral Many of its residents, including a good number of non-homegrown Cagay-anons (the City has a large base of migrant population and is a virtual melting pot of people of diverse cultures) attest to the City's being a most ideal place to live in. Aside from its strategic location (it is just an hour and 20 minutes by plane from Manila; Cebu is just half an hour away by plane and a sleep away by fast ferry; Davao is just five hours away; Iligan to the West and Bukidnon to the Southeast are just an hour or so away), the City offers its residents a quality but affordable lifestyle. From food to power to real estate, prices here are relatively lower than Manila or other parts of Luzon or Cebu, enabling one to stretch his spending peso or dollar.
The City has something to offer everyone. If you prefer nature tripping, the beaches are close by and so are mountain retreats. If you want more adventure, Cagayan de Oro River has the distinction of allowing river rafting experience all-year round, using the normal rafts or the Pinoy-style using tire inner tubes or salbabidas tied together. If you are a golf enthusiast, there is Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club which is just a few minutes away from the airport and if you want more golf, there is the classic Del Monte Golf Club nearby which has the distinction of breeding such golf champions as Celestino Tugot and Frankie Miñoza.
Would you like shopping instead? CDO has a good number of malls and modern shopping centers, including national brands like SM, Robinsons and Makro along with local brands, Gaisano, LimKetKai and Ororama. In addition, the City has completed the renovation of its major markets, including the Cogon and Carmen Markets, turning these into clean and modern multi-storey buildings, and the construction of the Westbound Market and Transport Terminal. The City also has something for night owls, including the Night Café which is similar to the Boardwalk of the revitalized Manila Bay area.
As an education hub in Northern Mindanao, CDO boasts of 300 private and public schools catering to primary, secondary, vocational and college education. The list of schools includes three universities, including Ateneo de Cagayan (Xavier University) and an International School catering to the educational needs of expatriates' families.
Golden Friendship Park, also referred to as Divisoria
With regard to healthcare, the City has one of the more favorable hospital bed to population ratios (1:474 in 2003, the latest figure available) than most other places in the Philippines, thanks to the presence of at least 12 major and well-equipped hospitals.Other health facilities include a string of barangay health centers, private medical clinics, and modern diagnostic centers and laboratories.
As of last count, there are over 80 private subdivisions in the City, a good number of which, particularly those in Pueblo de Oro, boast of standard amenities and features such as wide roads (CDO is perhaps the only place in the Philippines where the set minimum width requirements for roads exceed national standards), underground drainage, perimeter fence, 24-hour security, and ample open spaces and facilities such as parks, playgrounds, and clubhouses.
Canopy Walk in Claveria
Pinoy-style whitewater rafting, also known as "tubing"
Mantangale Dive Resort
In terms of modern day appurtenances such as broadband and the internet, the City does not lag. Proof of this is the proliferation of internet cafes where one can surf for less than P20 per hour (roughly US$0.30). As a further proof that it has the necessary telecom and other needed information technology (IT) infrastructures, the booming call center industry has spread to Cagayan de Oro, with a couple of call center firms and a medical transcription company now in operation and several more expected to locate here soon, particularly in the Pueblo de Oro IT Park, the first such park in Mindanao. As a special economic zone, the park offers tax holidays and other incentives to its investors and locators.
Yes, CDO is in Mindanao but it is, and has always been, one of the most peaceful cities in the Philippines, with a crime rate that is much lower than most other cities. Its history has not been marred by the so-called Mindanao conflict, nor has any incident involving the Abu Sayyaf or some such terrorist group occurred there. It has helped that not only is peace and order a priority of the local government but there is also an inherent harmonious relationship between Christians and Muslims in this predominantly Christian area.
Because of the legendary friendliness and warmth of its people, CDO has always been known as the "City of Golden Friendship." Today, because of the great strides it has made by way of progress, notably in the last few years, City officials want to capture and highlight such progress by adopting another tag line: "A City in Bloom, in Blossom and in Boom." Fittingly, Cagayan de Oro is indeed such a city.
farirah, what is the current and specific population of CdeO nowadays? does anyone know?
junax March 30th, 2008, 07:02 PM let me apologize for my unethical behaviour for posting a davao article. first of all, i was neither angry nor upset with regards to junax's reaction. if i was, i wouldnt have hesitated to use capital letters. second of all, i didnt use any profanity in order to express my inner most anger but the other fellow did. in fact, i didnt even make any unpleasant remarks. i was merely explaining to the fellow that designing hotels or high rise structures dont follow the usual standard floor to ceiling height. i was under the impression that the standard floor to ceiling height is usually ten feet high. hotel lobbies and conference/gathering halls dont follow the standard height but instead usually utilizes the 20 feet floor to ceiling height. that is why i said that "maybe the LKK hotel is 21 storeys tall but the actual height is that of a 23. the design of the lobby must be 2 storeys tall and the top floor, where gatherings are held, must also be 2 storeys high." if in any way i made anyone uncomfortable, i hope you can accept my condescension.
may sinabi ba akong profanity?
your post:
"i think that all the people here in ssc cdo are well aware that a buildng is not measured in terms of its floor counts but instead of the actual height, either in meters or feet. what im trying to point out is that the 21 storey hotel of LKK is not actually 21 but 23 because the actual height divided by standard floor to ceiling height."
mula pa nang nagsimula ako dito sa SSC 2 years ago gawain ko na talaga ang maglinaw ng facts in support sa SSC dahil dito hindi pangkaraniwan ang forum, parang source of vital information na to eh. now, kung may mga forumer sa SSC na sa tingin nyo ay binabash kayo you have all the right to react in your own capacity, may freedom naman tayo dito gaya ng ginagawa ko ngayon. yun lang naman pare, sabi ko nga hindi natin pag aari ang ating syudad mas lalo na dito sa SSC. kung sa tingin mo inyo itong CDO forum dahil kayo ang regular poster dito, eh sasabihin ko sa inyo ngayon na akin din ito kasi nag post na ako ngayon dito, at hindi ako nambastos.
wala naman sigurong application para maging cdo, zamboanga, davao, etc. forumer. all you have to do is post a valid righteous post and instantly become a valid forumer too in that thread. of course it is a custom na kung saan ka nakabase doon ka maging regular forumer kasi yung mga information is within your reach. pero hindi ibig sabihin confined ka doon, i love mindanao that is why i don't like being singled out sa isang lugar lalo na't associated ako sa mga cities dito. eto kung saan ako associated sa mindanao, kaya "mindanao power" ang caption ko:

Under the program, the beneficiary who has no capital will be given a welding machine to use to start his own business. The welding machine, at a very low price, will be paid in a very minimal amount of P10 per day until it is fully paid.
The welding entrepreneur will also receive technical assistance aside from the training already given and some business referrals from the sponsors.
Miap trains the out-of-school youths in the skill of welding and fabrication spots from among its graduates, especially for those wanting to become an entrepreneur.
Villanueva Mayor Juliette Uy thanked the Rotary Club of West Cagayan de Oro and Miap for bringing the laudable project to their municipality. Being an advocate in creating local projects to promote livelihood, Uy underscored how the project would help uplift the recipients' lives.
The local welding industry has recently seen a boost with the coming of the shipbuilding company Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Company Limited in Villanueva. (Press release)

Wendy Valdez wants to try whitewater rafting (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/03/31/life/wendy.valdez.wants.to.try.whitewater.rafting.html)
"GUSTO ko nga ma-try yung whitewater rafting rito kaya lang first flight kami bukas," television primetime actress Wendy Valdez, in a brown tank top and white slacks, said during a one-minute quickie interview with Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.
Wendy was at SM City Cagayan de Oro last Saturday with her on-screen love team partner Bruce Quebral for an autograph signing with the fans of their previous primetime opera Margarita where Wendy portrayed the role of a strip dancer.
Since the autograph signing was very short (it took only an hour long), Wendy and Bruce were immediately whisked back to Manila the day after (i.e. yesterday).
But Wendy confided to this writer that if given the chance, she'd love to be back here in Cagayan de Oro to do some splashing at whitewater rapids.
As an actress who had done some shows in various places in the Philippines, Wendy said she was privileged to have seen for herself some of the most beautiful spots in the country.
Yet she admitted that she had not seen all of them and one of the thrills she would be looking forward is our very own whitewater rafting here in the city by the bay.
Meanwhile, Wendy has to contend herself on a very hectic shooting schedule at three times a week for her current primetime billing Palos in her supporting role as Nicolla.
The Pinoy Big Brother alumnus and Bb. Pilipinas 2005 first runner-up has also done a few men's magazine pictorials before, notably in Maxim Philippine edition.
Speaking of which, does she still sport that piercing she had when she posed for Maxim?
I'd like to think so but then again Wendy was in a conservative tank top with no baring midriffs last Saturday. Too darn bad! (MDF)

MANILA, Philippines—Versatile musician Toti Fuentes passed away on Thursday in the United States after battling cancer for the last six years. He was 55.
Born in Cagayan de Oro City, Fuentes—named after his father Francisco and the second of eight siblings—received musical training at an early age. At 6, he learned to play the piano. His parents saw the prodigy in him and sent him to the University of Santo Tomas Conservatory of Music for college.
He also entered the seminary, but realized music was his calling.
Determined to pursue a professional career as a musician, Fuentes hooked up with Rico J. Puno, then an aspiring Taglish folk singer beginning to build a reputation at Spindle, a folk club, in 1974. When Puno broke into the pop scene, Fuentes became his regular pianist in concerts and recordings.
Fuentes also did session work with the Apo Hiking Society, Hajji Alejandro, Basil Valdez, Pilita Corrales and other popular artists.
By 1978, Toti was evolving as a jazz musician and wanted to get to “the source,” as he called it. He went to the US, where he spent the next 20 years as a working musician—performing with Natalie Cole, Anita Baker, Julia Fordham, Aretha Franklin, Andy Williams and many others.
Fuentes spent several years as a session musician in Los Angeles, hoping to play with his idol, Sergio Mendes. When they finally met, it didn’t take long for Mendes to ask Fuentes to join him on a concert tour.
He also conducted the North Dakota Symphony Orchestra and the Louisville Pops Symphony Orchestra.
In 1999, Fuentes was diagnosed with a rare tumor in the stomach, which he battled with an experimental treatment administered by a hospital in Chicago where he had been residing.
The cancer had been in remission when he was in Manila in October last year for a series of shows with singer Ana Fegi.
“But even now,” Fuentes told the Inquirer then, “I feel death follows me all around. On the other hand, I have more angels of life around me as well. When I have to be rushed to the hospital, these angels come to my rescue.”
Early this year, Fuentes was back in Manila as bandleader in British singer-songwriter Julia Fordham’s Valentine shows at the Ayala malls. Two weeks ago, he performed with former Sergio Mendes vocalist Kevyn Lettau on the last night of the week-long 3rd Philippine International Jazz Festival.
“He was dedicated to his craft. He always had time to listen and give breaks to singers,” said Richard Merk, one of Fuentes’ many friends in the local music industry.
“He had many dreams,” said Bibsy Carballo, Fuentes’ manager. “He always told me he couldn’t die because he had so many things to do. He wanted to help disadvantaged and sick children through his foundation, Hope for the World.”
Fuentes is survived by his Polish-American wife Jodi and sons Damien and Xavier.

THE City Council committee on economic enterprises chaired by Councilor Reynaldo N. Advincula is reviewing the proposal submitted by a resident of Barangay 32 for the city government to construct an underpass at the vicinity of Cogon Market under a Built-Operate-Transfer (BOT) scheme.
The resident, a retired City Sheriff, said the project will be ideal for sidewalk vendors and that some of the spaces could even be rented out for pawnshops and shipping lines outlets just like the underpass at Hidalgo St. in Quiapo, Manila. The proposed project will cross Lt. Guillermo, JR Borja St. and Yacapin Extension. The proponent said the project will also protect the customers from motorists while buying goods along sidewalks, even adding the scenarios like RTA confiscating goods displayed along the sidewalks will be minimized. by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/city Council Office
COUNCILOR Roger Abaday this morning called for the enactment of a law that will protect women employed in the different department stores, malls and restaurants in the city.
In his special report during the City Council regular session presided over by Councilor President Eleipe, the councilor said he has received several complaints regarding this."They are working eight to 10 hours a day, made to stand and roam around without providing proper place for rest or seat for them to rest while waiting for customers," he said.Councilor Abaday said the Labor Code mandates the establishment of standards to ensure the welfare and the health of women. He added that the Philippine Constitution also requires the state to protect the maternal functions of women and provide facilities to enhance their welfare so that they will realize their fullest potentials in nation building."This is all about protection of working women," he pointed out adding that because of their fragile physical condition and their maternal function, their protection is provided for by law.Councilor Abaday said that Metro Manila, Davao and Cebu have already enacted legislations in line with this. As this developed, Councilor President Elipe referred the report to the committees on women and on labor chaired by Councilors MaryCor Calizo and Alexander Dacer, respectively.Councilor Elipe said all pertinent laws should be harmonized so that a good legislation can be drafted. ph_matrix March 31st, 2008, 08:52 AM Cepalco Must Pay City For Posts - VYE
by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/city Council Office
VICE Mayor Vicente Emano is satisfied with the decision of the court which sustained the implementation of a city ordinance requiring the Cagayan de Oro Electric Power and Light Company (CEPALCO) to pay the city for every post erected on government land.
In a press statement, the vice mayor said it is proper for the utility firm to pay the city since it is also making money out of the posts from other utility service providers. He expressed gladness that the court acted in favor of the city government in the tax case battle. The Power learned that the court upheld the "power of local government units to create their own sources of revenue being constitutional and therefore, it cannot interfere in the decision making of the LGUs concerned by dictating upon them to have the ordinance amended, modified or annulled as the case maybe.""Angayan man pod gayod pabayron ang Cepalco kay ang publiko maoy tag-iya sa yuta. Gawas pa, mikita ang Cepalco og dakong salapi sa maong mga poste pinaagi sa pagpa-abang niini ngadto sa mga kompanya nga mikutay usab sa ilang mga linya sama sa cable TV ug mga telephone companies," the vice mayor added.Ordinance No. 9527-2005 imposes a Mayor’s Permit Fee on electric or telecommunication posts owned by companies which are erected on government or private lots along government streets, roads, highways and alleys at the rate of P500 per post per year. The ordinance was enacted after legislators observed that poles are sprouting everywhere in the city.According to the authors these posts pose traffic and safety hazard to the public if not maintained. Reports indicate that Cepalco has more than 17,000 poles around the city, which will translate to additional income of about P8.5 million a year for the city’s coffers. (LCR)

GearX March 31st, 2008, 09:38 AM UNESCO cites RP for use of ICT in education (http://tucpblog.wordpress.com/category/good-news/)

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines through the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) has won a commendation from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for a project to digitize non-formal education in the country, a government executive has told INQUIRER.net.
The UNESCO commendation is one of several awards given to initiatives and projects that make use of information and communications technology in education.
The CICT was among those recognized under the non-formal educator category.
In an interview, CICT commissioner Tim Diaz de Rivera said the project, eSkwela, a play on the Filipino term for school, is a joint project of the agency and the Bureau of Alternative Learning Systems (BALS) of the Department of Education.
The Bureau of Alternative Learning Systems offers a home-study program for out-of-school youths wanting to finish high school. Among the popular beneficiaries of this program is Filipino boxer Manny Pacquiao, according to Diaz de Rivera.
“But he was not yet part of what we’re doing,” Diaz de Rivera said, as he explained that the CICT and the BALS started working on the eSkwela project last year.
The esKwela project is currently digitizing the different modules offered by the program. The digitized content is now being loaded onto computer servers that are being deployed nationwide through another program of the CICT, Diaz de Rivera said.
“We’re also turning the content into interactive modules,” added Diaz de Rivera, who pointed out that this initiative is different from the CyberEd project of the Department of Education.
The eSkwela project is currently being pilot tested in four sites: in San Jose Del Monte in Bulacan; a telecommunications office in Roces, Quezon City; in Mandaue, Cebu; and in Cagayan de Oro City.
“We’re providing computers to these pilot sites,” he added.
bariQ March 31st, 2008, 09:45 AM N. Mindanao SMEs tapped for mobile computing growth
(Sunstar, 03/27/2008, Danilo Adorador)
Leading players in the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) industry are eyeing Northern Mindanao's small and medium enterprises (SMEs) as potential growth area for mobile computing market.
Ernel T. Esplanada, area sales manager of Filipino-owned laptop-maker Neo, said they are determined to tap the region's 30,000 SMEs in the mobile computing trend.
"When you talk about added value, affordability and more productivity, then mobile computing is the way," Esplanada told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro during the sidelines of the half-day mobility seminar for SMEs Wednesday.
The seminar, sponsored by Neo along with computer processor-maker Intel and software giant Microsoft, walked the participants through on the business advantages choosing mobile personal computers than desktop PCs.
Wowie Wong, Intel channel account manager, pointed out that compared to desktop PCs running on 350 to 550 watts, electronic notebooks running on 65 watts can save businesses 57 percent to 71 percent on electric bills.
"The ownership cost for desktop PCs is huge compared to notebooks maintenance and other costs factored in," he said. "Of course, not included here is the mobility factor, which translates to greater productivity."
George Parrilla, marketing manager for Microsoft Southern Philippines, highlighted the security, usability, and functionality edge of new generation notebooks running with the company's Vista operating system.
With a powerful OS, laptops will transform the way people create and share information, and that means a lot for those in the ICT business. That means our SMEs can now maximize their full potential through technology.
Liza VM. Alcantar, Chief, Industry and Investments Division of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Northern Mindanao, said SMEs are poised to play a bigger role in the mobile computing business.
Alcantar cited that SMEs comprise about 99.6 percent of all registered businesses nationwide, and employs 69.9 percent of the labor force-contributing 32 percent to the economy.
"SMEs are the true engine of growth in the country and, with technology around, we can help these businesses fuel national growth," she said.
ive been to the site of Neo notebooks and i must say, they are very promising.

i am not, pero malaki ang neri clan, katulad din yan ng mga garcia, reyes, cruz, etc. maybe sa family tree, because of the samporna roots, tirso and even the beleaguered secretary neri got blood connections. na remember ko yung last reunion na naka attend ako (cdo, bukidnon, gensan, davao, zamboanga and iligan combined), held sa aquarius beach w/c is also owned by the clan, villanueva, misor. nag color coding kami sa sobrang dami, abot kami ng mga 2,000. sa lucio neri pa lang abot kami 150, and we bannered the bukidnon province.
hmmm, mukhang related pa yata tayo Junax. i remember my family and relatives attended the TAN-NERI clan reunion. but maybe its a different reunion. di ako naka-attend kasi i was based in Manila before. musta gaw? :jk:
KulasKusgan March 31st, 2008, 07:02 PM well it's not my call anymore, because they have their own reasoning. of course i want peace and harmony not only here in mindanao forums but the whole philippine forum. maybe they do it out of rage from previous scuffles that both parties failed to reconcile. laging may puno't dulo yan at hindi ko alam kung saan yan nagsimula at kung sino ang dapat sisihin.
unfair namang sabihin na iisang party lang ang may kasalanan kung bakit may cold war ang cdo at davao kasi umabot na tayo sa napakaraming threads. i can still remember clearly that sleepwalker_uno, a davaoeno forumer, started the first ever SSC CDO thread, and we were the early posters of that thread alongside with francisx, rusty18, etc. it's all information way back then and it was peaceful. trolls usually were the peacebreakers, like Valium a known troll at that time na mahilig sa city vs city discussions, but any scuffles during our time were solved accordingly.
to make it short, ang key lang dito sa SSC para walang away is to primarily post just, right, correct information na walang aapakan na regional pride kasi alam naman natin na may kanya kanya din tayong preferences. dito sa secondary posts palaging may away eh, which is chitchatting, side comments, comparison with other cities, city vs city remarks. maybe let's start from being friendly and maybe the air will adjust accordingly. wala naman sigurong santo dito na syang mag cast ng first stone diba?
now back to topic... peace.
saan na pala si sleepwalker_uno?
dati, healthy and friendly ang posts sa cdo thread. walang away because we wanted to promote cdo kasi walang forumers na taga cdo noon. until dumating si valium trying to ignite cvc bet dvo & cdo. naging peaceful uli. may dumating naman na troll na peacemaker kuno pero gusto ra diay ipaaway ang dvo & cdo.
the first i went to CDO, i fell in love with the place esp sa mga gimikan like pjoes diner. namangha ako kasi walang ganyan sa davao. lingaw ko sa night cafe, sa limketkai, malasag, everything was positive. that prompted me to open a thread dedicated to cdo. maski karon naay lamat ang relasyon bet davao & cdo forumers here in ssc, i still love cdo. maski akong katupad sa bus og mga tao na akong nameet sa cdo, sige panaway sa davao, i still love cdo.
well i just hope yong ibang forumer from your current place @junax will follow your lead, because honestly we are tried of being indirectly called "Katkat", "CopyKat" or what so ever indirect insult.. I just hope this top 2 cities in Mindanao can have harmony soon.. :)
katkat is dedicated to ALL social climbers. kahit kami davao forumers call ourselves katkat lalo na pag magmeet kami in a sosy place. kung sa tingin ninyo wala kayong ginawang katkat, why bother?
basta isipin nyo lang, in every action, may equal reaction (usahay more than equal, times 10 pa).
sige, para peace na ta... kambyohan nako later akong katkat sig below.

2008 NMRAA Meet blasts off Tuesday (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/04/01/sports/2008.nmraa.meet.blasts.off.tuesday.html)
By Lynde Salgados
WHETHER the financially cash-strapped Cagayan de Oro team will look different or whatever in their sports attire will be known Tuesday as the 2008 Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) Meet kicks with a parade around the city.
"We might be the poorest in uniform but it doesn't mean that our athletes will not be giving out their best," said Porferio "Jun" Padinit, assistant to Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association (Coaa) team manager Delia Agbon.
Already, Padinit expects rival delegations to outshine Coaa athletes in Tuesday's opening parade set at 1 p.m. as they are said to be well-prepared and much more abundant when it comes to financial support.
"We have no uniform jackets and new shoes compared to other teams in Northern Mindanao pero naanad na man `ta ana (we're already accustomed to that)," said Padinit as he recalled that Coaa even once participated in a Regional Meet parade in Tubod, Lanao del Norte with no uniforms at all.
"Sa una gani naulahi pag-abot ang uniforms sa Tubod so, bulabog kaayo. Sa allowance anad na usab atong mga atleta. Kon sa uban P1,000 to P2,000 per head ang mahatag sa ilang mga bata P300 usab sa ato during the Koronadal Palaro (Our uniforms were in complete mess during the past Regional Meet in Lanao. There's also a big difference when comparing our athletes' allowance to others especially during the Koronadal Palaro)," added Padinit.
Padinit urged the local tri-media to monitor the NMRAA parade "aron ila g'yong makomparar ang kalainan nga mahimong kapanaminan aron sab makamata atong mga opisyales sa siyudad (So that they can see the difference for them to mirror out the situation. Covering the event can be a tool to serve as wake up call to our less concerned city officials)."
Some 160 elementary and 192 secondary athletes from Cagayan de Oro will see action in the 2008 NMRAA Meet the province of Misamis Oriental is hosting here from April 1 to 4 at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.
Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno and Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Constantino Jaraula will be at hand to grace the 2:30 p.m. opening ceremony along with Director IV Estrella Abid-Babano and Ceso IV Sinforosa A. Guiñares, Ph.D. of Misamis Oriental Division and City School Division Superintendent Myrna S. Motoomul.
Misamis Oriental Vice Governor Norris Casiño Babiera will also deliver welcome remarks before the participating athletes, coaches and delegation officials.
As usual, various field demonstrations will highlight the opening rites with MOGCHS and Sugbongcogon National High School students showcasing their stuffs.

USAid helps in Oro sanitation (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/04/01/feat/usaid.helps.in.oro.sanitation.html)
MAYOR Constantino G. Jaraula on Monday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with an American company supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAid) for the implementation of a sanitation project in Cagayan de Oro City.
The MOU was formally sealed with Jaraula signing on behalf of the City Government and Lisa Kircher Lumbao representing the Aecom Internal Development, an American company implementing a cooperative agreement funded by USAid for the Philippine Sanitation Alliance project.
The Philippine Sanitation Alliance is in partnership with private sector companies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and local government units (LGUs) that will provide more than 900,000 Filipinos with access to sanitation services aimed at reducing public health risks and promote increased productivity.
The Philippine Sanitation Alliance will also leverage funding and resources from the private sector and participating cities to develop sanitation facilities for residential housing developments, hotels, hospitals, schools, public markets and slaughterhouses using a participatory, sustainable approach.
Under the MOU, the two parties have agreed to contemplate activities including technical assistance, development and construction of treatment facilities, preparation and delivery of information campaigns, and conduct of training to support the development and long-term sustainable operation of sanitation systems.
For its part, Aecom will use the resources from USAid to provide technical assistance to the city. The USAid funding will also provide resources for holding workshops on action planning, technology and finance options; data collection; site visits; and the design and packaging of pilot projects.
The City Government, in turn, will provide assistance in the form of construction of treatment facilities and in kind contributions such as executive and staff support to develop the identified projects.

City Govt. Welcomes Tainan City Officials
by Sandra B. Tadeo/ City Information Office
The City Government of Cagayan de Oro welcomed today a group of officials from Tainan City, Taiwan who arrived in the city to strengthen ties along trade and diplomatic relations.
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula personally welcomed the 10-member Tainan delegation headed by Tainan City Mayor Tain-Tsair Hsu, together with Taiwan Ambassador Hsin-Hsing Wu and the officials of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office. Mayor Jaraula is optimistic that the visit of Tainan officials will boost the sisterhood ties between Cagayan de Oro and Tainan, and will benefit the people in the two cities in terms of cultural exchange and economic cooperation. Cagayan de Oro and Tainan became sister cities in 2005 when former city mayor and now City Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano led a trade mission to Tainan City three years ago. As a gesture of welcome befit a sister city, the city government will host a dinner for the Tainan officials at the newly-renovated City Tourism Hall within the city hall compound tonight. On April 2, Wednesday, Mayor Jaraula, together with Mayor Hsu will lead the groundbreaking ceremony of the soon to be constructed legislative building situated in an adjacent lot near the existing city hall compound. Mayor Jaraula hoped that the visit of Tainan officials will be another opportunity for Cagayan de Oro to showcase its tourism and investment potentials to foreign visitors. Last week, the city also played host to the officers of the USS VANDEGRIFT of the US Navy which visited the city on a goodwill mission and as part of the American government’s gesture of support to the city’s establishment of the MacArthur Memorial Marker. The city government takes on an active stance in promoting Cagayan de Oro to the global community, attract more foreign investors to locate their business here and consequently generate more employment opportunities for the people and business taxes for the government.

This event is free of charge to Chamber members in good standing. A minimal fee of P300 per person inclusive of buffet lunch, snacks and handouts is pegged for non-Chamber members.
"We hope to sustain similar activities to help member companies and partner organizations enhance their respective productivity and sustainability," Meñes added. The Misamis Oriental Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MOFCCCI) and the Department of Energy (DOE) also support the event.

dati, healthy and friendly ang posts sa cdo thread. walang away because we wanted to promote cdo kasi walang forumers na taga cdo noon. until dumating si valium trying to ignite cvc bet dvo & cdo. naging peaceful uli. may dumating naman na troll na peacemaker kuno pero gusto ra diay ipaaway ang dvo & cdo.
the first i went to CDO, i fell in love with the place esp sa mga gimikan like pjoes diner. namangha ako kasi walang ganyan sa davao. lingaw ko sa night cafe, sa limketkai, malasag, everything was positive. that prompted me to open a thread dedicated to cdo. maski karon naay lamat ang relasyon bet davao & cdo forumers here in ssc, i still love cdo. maski akong katupad sa bus og mga tao na akong nameet sa cdo, sige panaway sa davao, i still love cdo.
What if I say now that I had that kind of experience before when I was in Davao? Anyway, we got the same experience. :) Mine and your fellowmen perhaps were just having that kind of attitude because of the blind and senseless reason till nowadays that they have never wanted each other's beloved city will prosper. ^^

as much as i want a casino in our town, that is still a big question. CdeO has been deeply influenced by the religious sector. there are plenty of catholic schools here and the religious sector can easily persuade their students to call for a rally against gambling or casino. the catholic schools know this and that what makes them very influencial. i remember when i was a kid we marched along the streets of CdeO in order to convince the public that putting a casino in town would only augment the crime rate. the casino was suppose to be in pryce but it didnt push thru because of us, the little children. i really want a casino in CdeO but the masters of morality in CdeO think otherwise. still, i hope someday CdeO will have a casino of its own.
maybe condominiums, bars and restaurants can be accomodated there so as to boost the city's tourism industry.

I'd like to see Donkoy Emano be reelected as mayor of CdeO in 2010 if Jaraula won't run again. I support his aggressive ambition, the outstanding respect he already have from all peoples of religion, peoples of different ideologies, and peoples of all Philippine politics, and his taste of capitalism in leading CdeO and even this 2nd largest island to national arena and to the whole world. ^^
Ex!lE April 1st, 2008, 02:38 PM ^ mokandidato balik ug pagka congressman si mayor Jaraula?

95% possibility. Donkoy will have his greatest opponent for 2010 mayoral election: it can be Sia or Rolando Uy. We'll wait the outcome of CdeO politics coz I believe that a very ambitious and aggressive mayor like Donkoy's and Jaraula's deserves the right to lead CdeO's future. ^^

Taiwanese officials visit Oro (http://sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/04/02/bus/taiwanese.officials.visit.oro.html)
THE City Government of Cagayan de Oro welcomed Tuesday a group of officials from Tainan City, Taiwan who arrived in the city to strengthen ties along trade and diplomatic relations.
Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula personally welcomed the 10-member Tainan delegation headed by Tainan City Mayor Tain-Tsair Hsu, together with Taiwan Ambassador Hsin-Hsing Wu and the officials of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
Jaraula is optimistic that the visit of Tainan officials will boost the sisterhood ties between Cagayan de Oro and Tainan, and will benefit the people in the two cities in terms of cultural exchange and economic cooperation.
Cagayan de Oro and Tainan became sister cities in 2005 when Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano led a trade mission to Tainan City three years ago.
As a gesture of welcome befit a sister city, the City Government will host a dinner for the Tainan officials at the newly renovated City Tourism Hall within the city hall compound Wednesday night.
Jaraula, together with Hsu, will lead the groundbreaking ceremony of the soon to be constructed legislative building situated in an adjacent lot near the existing city hall compound on Wednesday.
Jaraula hoped that the visit of Tainan officials would be another opportunity for Cagayan de Oro to showcase its tourism and investment potentials to foreign visitors.
Last week, the city also played host to the officers of the USS Vandegrift of the US Navy, which visited the city on a goodwill mission and as part of the American government's gesture of support to the city's establishment of the MacArthur Memorial Marker.
The City Government takes on an active stance in promoting Cagayan de Oro to the global community, attract more foreign investors to locate their businesses here, and consequently generate more employment opportunities for the people and business taxes for the government. (Press release)

Farirah April 2nd, 2008, 04:26 AM Cagayan de Oro seen as key information and technology market
April 28, 2007
A GLOBAL software solutions company revealed that Cagayan de Oro City is now identified as a “key market” outside of Metro Manila that is booming especially in the Information and Technology (IT) field.
This as the same firm recently launched their five-city cross-country business solutions road show here in Cagayan de Oro City.
SAP Phils. Inc. channels manager Patrick Tan and Fast track Solutions, Inc. managing director Kerwin Malabanan said it was inevitable that they eventually put up an office here in the city.
This as Cagayan de Oro City hosts already a number of their clients and that it is one of the huge IT hubs in the country.
“Cagayan de Oro has always been a key market. It is where some of our partner are like Del Monte,” Tan said. “This is a very good market and we have always liked the progressive thinking of the people.”
Malabanan for his part said Cagayan de Oro City has always been considered as “one of the boom markets south of Manila.”
“It is where there are big opportunities for training and development of consultants,” he said. “We are impressed with the quality of graduate here in Cagayan de Oro and Davao, especially in the IT field.”
SAP kicks off cross-country business soultions roadshow in CDO
May 1, 2007
April 25, 2007, CAGAYAN DE ORO – SAP’s growing presence in Mindanao can be demonstrated by the increasing number of significant wins in the region. Nader & Ebrahim S/O Hassan (NEH), a Davao-based banana exporter, recently went live on SAP Business One with FastTrack at the helm of the implementation. Meanwhile, San Pedro College in Davao City also recently acquired SAP Business One, with implementation currently underway.
SAP®, the world’s leading provider of business software solutions, will kick off today its five-city cross-country event dubbed “SAP Business Solutions Roadshow” in Cagayan De Oro.
The CDO leg held at the Mallbery Suites Business Hotel, is in partnership with FastTrack Solutions, Inc. ERP and MRP solutions provider specializing in SAP Business One™ Consulting services.
The roadshow focuses on the benefits of using SAP Business One, an affordable, integrated management solution designed specifically for small and medium-sized businesses. With SAP Business One, companies get a true and unified view of operations across critical aspects of the business such as customer relationship management, manufacturing, and finance. Even companies with as few as 10 employees can help increase their bottomline through improved decision-making abilities resulting from the availability of real-time information such as critical business indicators, sales and revenue performance and consumer trends. SAP Business One can also be implemented in as short as eight weeks with the expertise of certified SAP business partners such as FastTrack.
SAP Business One is an out-of-the-box solution with country-specific localization that can be deployed “as is.” An important part of this technology is the SAP Business One software development kit – one of the most advanced development environments available in the SMB space. The power and flexibility of the software development kit allows SAP Business Partners to provide key features such as a high degree of adaptability to business processes and management, powerful customizations, formatted search and user fields and smooth upgrade processes. With this, SAP Business Partners like FastTrack can develop applications that add new business management and industry-specific capabilities to SAP Business One. FastTrack has proven expertise in a wide range of industries including agriculture, healthcare, logistics and distribution.
The CDO roadshow is organized together with the Cagayan De Oro Chamber of Commerce & Industry Foundation.

GearX April 2nd, 2008, 07:54 AM Don Moen "Worship and Revival Tour" April 12, 2008 at Pelaez Sports Complex
http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/ILIGAN/1115366498.jpg
Don Moen returns to the Philippines this 2008 and hits 6 cities!
Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City;
Quezon Convention Center, Lucena City;
Don Narciso Ramos Sports Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan;
Iloilo Sports Complex, Iloilo;
University of Southern Philippines (open grounds), Cebu City
Pelaez Sports Complex, Cagayan de Oro
We can only hope groups like Hillsong Would Do Multiple City Tours in the Philippines. I suppose they'll stay here for 3 months if they do that!
AFTER a very successful tour last year, Don Moen returns to the Philippines this summer for another series of praise and worship events starting off on April 4, 8 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome.
Moen, after his first concert, is scheduled to visit more areas this time which include Lucena, Lingayen, Iloilo, Cebu and Cagayan De Oro. Known for his inspirational songs such as "God Will Make A Way", "Give Thanks," "Heal Me, Oh Lord", "God is Good All The Time" and "Thank You Lord", Don Moen is a famous songwriter and performer who gained success with this praise and worship songs based closely to the words of the Bible.
He traveled extensively around the globe to spread God's Word through his music and inspirational teachings. This month, Don Moen finishes his latest album which will be launched soon.
Don Moen's "Worship and Revival Concert Tour" promises to unite once again believes from the Evangelical and Catholic Communities. His concert tour series are scheduled as follows:
April 4, 8 p.m. at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City;
April 5, 7p.m. at the Quezon Convention Center, Lucena City;
April 6, 5:30 p.m. at Don Narciso Ramos Sports Center in Lingayen, Pangasinan;
April 10, 7 p.m. at the Iloilo Sports Complex, Iloilo;
April 11, 7:30 p.m. at the University of Southern Philippines (open grounds), Cebu City and on

Makes you wonder why the Cuneta was selected for Manila at this time. Is it because the Hillsong United Juggernaut has finally won over fans of Don Moen that Cuneta is enough for his many many (lola, tito and tita) fans?

GearX April 2nd, 2008, 11:41 AM Taiwanese Officials Vow To Foster Better Relations With CdeO (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1026)

Visiting Taiwanese officials have nothing but all praises for Cagayan de Oro and its leaders and vowed to building a strong relationship between the city and Tainan.
In a welcome dinner hosted by the city government for the 11-man delegation from Taiwan, Tainan City Mayor Hsu Tain-Tsair said that he is very impressed with the warmth and hospitality of the people in Cagayan de Oro. Mayor Hsu said that their visit to Cagayan de Oro is a confirmation of the ties that will continually bind the two sister cities not only along economic cooperation and cultural exchange but towards the building of world peace. “This is a new beginning for us to building peace that starts from a good relationship between our people, our cities, our country, our world,” Mayor Hsu declared. The Tainan city mayor hoped that as sister cities, the people of Cagayan de Oro and Tainan will be there to encourage each other and work together towards the achievement of an everlasting peace and sustainable progress. For his part, Taiwan Ambassador to the Philippines Hsin-Hsing Wu expressed optimism that with the brand of leadership Cagayan de Oro has, it is not a farfetched idea for the city to become the most important trade city in the country in the near future. Ambassador Wu also took the occasion as an opportunity to thank Philippine Ambassador to the United States Raul Rabe who was instrumental in pushing for the realization of a sisterhood relationship between Tainan City and Cagayan de Oro. The city has become a sister city of Tainan following a trade mission made by Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and a group local businessmen and trade officials to Tainan in September 2005. Aside from Mayor Hsu and Ambassador Wu, the other members of the Tainan delegation who visited the city are Tainan First Lady Shu-Chen Hsu Hung and son Chin-Chuan Hsu; Deputy Director General of the Dept. of Administration and Justice Ho-Sung Lin; System Coordinator of the Dept. of Administration and Justice Hung-Chih Shih; Department of Civil Affairs Chief Tai-Hua Hsiao; Substitute Chief of the Dept. of Information and International Relations Shu-Ming Huang; Director James Chang of the political affairs division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO); Director Wellington Wei of the information affairs division of TECO; and Executive Assistant Jeff Yang of the political affairs division of TECO. Mayor Hsu and his delegation from Tainan also graced the groundbreaking ceremony of the legislative building within the city hall complex this morning before going back to Tainan.
GearX April 2nd, 2008, 11:43 AM Mayor Jaraula Optimistic Of Gains In Tainan-CdeO Sisterhood (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1025)
by Sandra B. Tadeo/ City Information Office
http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/photos/1207126490photo_1.jpg
City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula today expressed optimism that the sisterhood ties between Cagayan de Oro and Tainan will usher in the universality of man and the achievement of global peace.
As he sent off today the delegation from Tainan City, Taiwan after a successful two-day visit, Mayor Jaraula said that the city stands to benefit from the fruits of the sister city relationship which was further strengthened by the visit of the Tainan City officials here. Mayor Jaraula revealed that along the thrust of mutual cooperation between the two cities, Tainan City pledged to donate five slightly-used firetrucks for Cagayan de Oro. The city government will coordinate with the Tainan government for the shipment of the firetrucks from Taiwan to the city. But Mayor Jaraula pointed out that the benefits being enjoyed by the city because of the sisterhood relationship forged between the two cities in 2005 is the fruit of the aggressive campaign and foresight of Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano who led the trade mission to Tainan three years ago. Mayor Jaraula told the visiting Taiwanese officials that he is lucky to have succeeded the administration of former mayor Emano who redefined progress and development in Cagayan de Oro. Meanwhile, City Vice Mayor Vicente Y. Emano hoped that Tainan City can help the city and other parts of Mindanao become truly progressive if only to improve the lives of the Mindanaoans. Vice Mayor Emano said that with the sisterhood relationship forged between the two cities, the officials of Tainan and Cagayan de Oro should be united in their efforts to conquer the dreams and aspirations of their people. “We hope that more than what we can do, you maybe able to help us more in terms of sending in more investors to locate their business in Cagayan de Oro and other parts of Mindanao,” Vice Mayor Emano told the Taiwanese officials. The 11-member Tainan City delegation headed by Mayor Hsu Tain-Tsiar and Ambassador Hsin-Hsing Wu left Cagayan de Oro back for Taiwan this morning after gracing the groundbreaking ceremony of the legislative building situated within the city hall complex.

This was bared by OIC Regional Manager Jesus So of the National Dairy Authority (NDA) Mindanao Field Office and chairman Cresencio Barros of the Northern Mindanao Federation of Dairy Cooperatives (NMFDC) during the “Talakayan sa PIA” media forum held recently at the Philippine Information Agency in Cagayan de Oro.
The dairy congress, Barros said, is conducted yearly where dairy enthusiasts throughout the country will convene to discuss the development of the dairy business.
He added that the assembly, which is initiated by National Dairy Confederation of the Philippines (NDCP) with the support of the NDA, will be the biggest agri-business affair in Cagayan de Oro where world-wide dairy players, dairy farmers, exhibitors and suppliers of dairy equipment will come and participate in the three-day event.
With this dairy farmers will have access to information, latest technology, dairy supplies and equipment and also it will open the avenue for partner relationships between the local and international dairy players, he also said.
Barros revealed that one of the strong supporters of dairying that had been working hand-in-hand with the NDA, the United States Department of Agriculture, will also grace the big event.
The Australian Dairy Council, a regular attendee of the Congress, has already confirmed their attendance.
Other big players in the dairy industry like the US Livestock Genetic Export, including Thailand, had also confirmed their attendance.
The dairy players in the world are looking at Mindanao as one of the best dairy places in Asia, he further said.
The Congress will include the display of dairy cows that are rated good producers of dairy milk, he added.
After the Congress, Barros said, they are expecting more improvement in the dairy industry such as the upgrading of the knowledge and technology of the dairy farmers that would result to increase in their income; more investors or players in the dairy business; and increase in milk production, thus improving the nutrition needs of Filipino children, among others.
Now, he further said, one big incentive granted to farmers by the government is the exemption from the land reform program of all existing lands utilized for dairy farming.
He also announced that during the 9th Dairy Congress that was held in Cebu City in 2006, participated in by more than 1,000 delegates from the local and international dairy sectors, had a very big achievement, and this was the linkage made by the Dairy Confederation with the US Dairy Associations.
This opened the floodgates of dairying by the US Department of Agriculture, Barros said.
In 2007, the 10th Congress that was held in Pampanga and participated in by more than 1,500 delegates developed the “big brother-all brother” relationships.
The relationship with the dairy farmers of Brazil, a tropical country like the Philippines, was one of those being developed, the chairman also revealed.
What is most important is the words that will be released by the participating dairy players, especially the foreign ones that “this is the only time and venue that there is dairy in the Philippines,” he said.
In the same media forum, Vice Chairman Robert Enerio of the Northern Mindanao Federation of Dairy Cooperatives said one of the highlights of the 13th Dairy Congress is the genetic improvement of dairying that would be adapted by the dairy farmers, adding that this will enhance the milk production of farmers to a maximum of 2 liters per cow/per day.
Another major highlight in the event is the dissemination of information on dairy cows already producing 45 liters of milk per day/per cow.
For his part, NDA OIC Regional Manager Jesus So said their agency being under the wings of the Department of Agriculture is mandated to ensure the accelerated development of the dairy industry in the country.
One of its missions is to increase the coverage of the government’s Milk Feeding Program (MFP) and help reduce malnutrition, especially among Filipino children. (PIA-MisOrOccCam)
GearX April 3rd, 2008, 05:14 AM Balingasag ‘bangus’ getting popular in Cagayan de Oro (http://mindanao.p7107.com/cagayandeoro/2008/04/03/balingasag-bangus-getting-popular-in-cagayan-de-oro/)
BANGUS grown in marine fish cages from the mariculture park in Balingasag, Misamis Oriental, known for being mud-odor free, shiny and tasty, is getting popular in Cagayan de Oro.
In a market matching/forum on bangus conducted by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Northern Mindanao, a representative of a big supermarket in Cagayan de Oro City revealed that their customers like bangus from marine fish cages because it tastes better than those from ponds. A hotel representative also said that foreigners appreciate the taste of bangus raised in marine waters.
However, at present, bangus produced from the mariculture park cannot meet the local market demand.
According to Rodrigo Basallo, a bangus grower in the mariculture park, the local market is experiencing shortage of bangus supply. The bangus he sells in an outlet in Cagayan de Oro City is sold in just one day. His customers prefer bangus grown in marine water to bangus from fishponds even though there is a price difference of P20-P25 per kilo.
The mariculture park in Balingasag when fully developed will have a total of about 500 cages, which can produce about 2,250 metric tons of bangus in just one cropping. From its harvest in June of last year up o end of March this year, the mariculture park’s production already reached 100 metric tons and was marketed only locally.
Aside from bangus production, BFAR is also supervising the construction of a multi-species processing plant in Balingasag, which mainly caters to tilapia fillet production.
The tilapia processing plant is expected to produce 40 metric tons of tilapia fillet every month.
The operation of the plant will then make Northern Mindanao the tilapia fillet capital of the country.
^^
It was learned that the Philippines accounts for seven percent of the world’s tilapia production.
Aside from processing tilapia fillet, the plant will also convert tilapia entrails into feeds.(With reports from Mark D. Francisco)

Dreamer's April 3rd, 2008, 08:43 AM Enterprises Body To Study Proposal To Construct Underpass At Cogon (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1018)
by Eileen L. Borja/city Council Office
(ELB)
can't wait to see this project in case matuloy ito, well cogon market still need more space for the vendors. and putting these underpass can help reduce the numbers of illegal vendors and minimise accidents to the public as well. good initiative indeed.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula today approved the request of barangay Gusa for the acquisition of a school site for the East Gusa National High School.
The city mayor’s approval came after Gusa barangay chairman Enrico D. Salcedo personally endorsed Resolution No. 2008-04-19 to Mayor Jaraula during the latter’s visit at the mayor’s office. The said resolution sought Mayor Jaraula’s approval for the allocation of funds from the city government primarily intended for the purchase of a school site for East Gusa National High School. In its resolution, the barangay council of Gusa stressed the need for the acquisition of a school site citing the rapid growth of enrollees and students whose parents could not afford to send their children to neighboring high schools. Chairman Salcedo and the barangay council of Gusa pushed for the immediate passage of the resolution after noting the problem of overcrowding in classrooms and lack of facilities at the school’s temporary building. In a related development, Mayor Jaraula also pledged for the allocation of funds for the completion of the auditorium at the Regional Science High School in barangay Gusa. The city mayor made the assurance when he recently attended the school’s graduation rites where he was the guest speaker. Mayor Jaraula started the construction of the project when he was still serving as the lone district representative of Cagayan de Oro.

during our time, XU was already one of the top 10 universities in the country. at that time, the top 3 universities were ateneo de manila, UP and De La Salle Univ. i think that fact still exists up to now. after them was UST. what i couldnt believe was that XU tied UST in terms of overall academic performance. XU and UST, during our time, were of the same level according to CHED. in short, XU was either # 4 or 5 as an academic performing school. i do hope it still is.
yes gearX your right. UPLB's dynamic competition in terms of agricultural engineering is no other than XU. eversince before, the UPLB held a "grudge" against XU because most of the time XU would garner the top in the list of aggie engg board. it was about eight or nine years ago that UPLB befriended XU because UPLB grabbed the number one spot.

i think that the cost of the underpass brigde is the same as that of a overpass bridge. most of the time, the floor area or length is the basis for the cost of a certain brigde. if the underpass has the same floor area/length as that of an overpass, then definiltely the cost are the same. the only problem with the underpass is that it usually takes a longer time to finish.
it would really be nice if the underpass would become a reality. its unique, in one sense, and allocates ample space, since CdeO's area is miniscule, on the brighter side.
farirah, has the mayor considered this proposal to include in his list of projects?

GearX April 4th, 2008, 02:07 AM Mighty CDO jins rack up 14 golds (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/04/04/sports/mighty.cdo.jins.rack.up.14.golds.html)
By Lynde Salgados
POOR in support, but rich and big in fighting heart.
Staggered by the mysterious decrease in their allowance, the hassles-plagued Cagayan de Oro (CDO) athletes opted to vent their ire on the battlefields.
Seemingly unlikely for a team pestered no end by "habitual abuses", CDO made strong moves in taekwondo, swimming, chess and table tennis to overtake Day 1 leader Bukidnon in the medal race of the ongoing 2008 Northern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (NMRAA) Meet here at Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.
Although the defending champion Bukidnon continues to dominate the track and field events with 9 more golds harvest Thursday to go along with its initial 6 on the opening day action, CDO managed to steal the limelight by racking up a huge 14 in taekwondo, 5 in secondary girls swimming, 2 in table tennis apart from taking all of the 4 gilts at stake in chess team competitions for boys and girls in elementary and secondary levels.
Bukidnon settles for three title finishes in taekwondo to make it 18 the initial total of golds they won in a few events. At least 7 golds behind to CDO's 25 which would have swelled in double proportion had the tournament results in gymnastics, badminton, and other individual events were made available.
"Kay sa swimming lang daan kita ug ang Iligan ra ang nagkombate sa overall title. Mora'g ila ang secondary ato sab ang elementary (It's like a two-way race in swimming with Iligan dominating the secondary action and CDO lording it over in elementary category)," said CDO's swimming coach, Alice Sayusay.
But even that the home ground athletes would sustain the lead in the medal race, assistant Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association (Coaa) team manager Porferio "Jun" Padinit warns that it's not a guarantee "for us to wrest back the elusive overall crown that Cagayan de Oro delegation held some 15 years ago."
Padinit explains that Bukidnon is still in hot contention for the overall supremacy that will be decided not on the number of individual medals won but through the old-fashioned quotient or points system.
While CDO is sailing smoothly in basketball, the track and field powerhouse Bukidnon is practically in all fronts of the ballgame battles over the Palaro Center's grassy field.
"It is in ballgame competitions such as football, baseball and volleyball that can deliver big points. And based on past accounts, Bukidnon athletes are at par in energy-draining contest rain or shine," said Padinit.
However, to the CDO bets' measly allowance, Padinit can only swerve to other direction, saying "only Ma'am Delia (Agbon) who can answer that."
Now the athletic team manager of the Coaa, Agbon's management downgraded the already extremely low allowance of P300 last year to only P200 given to CDO athletes and coaches.
"We're just wondering kay dako man unta ang savings karon compared last year in Tubod, Lanao del Norte where Coaa rented Rural Transit buses for transportation. Samot na nga dako ang savings sa pagkaon kay daghan kanato ang ga-uli-uli sa atong panimalay," were the words floated by some coaches.
And in what could be another big insult to Cagayan de Oro being hyped as the City in Boom, Bloom and Blossom, Iligan City athletes revealed each one of them are receiving a cool P1,500 allowance for the whole duration of the four-day meet, aside from the complete set of uniforms issued to them by their delegation.
"They (Coaa officials) may have a good reason for this kay gamay ra sab gyod ang gihatag sa siyudad, though we don't have a concrete details of the whole scenario," avers Lawrence Pastrano of CDO's basketball coaching staff.
Taekwondo jins playing the heroic role for Team CDO on Thursday are Jivir Pantanosas, Ryan Paulo Ragudo, Miguel Ragudo, Mark Louis Luminarias, Kryzl David, Akila Boloto, Jo-Ann Salcedo, Shaneen Ched Sia, Emil Dwight Oclarit, Kevin Louis Sia, John Necho Tidoy, Josafat John Licayan, Francis Cris Malalay and Ernest John Mendoza.

GearX April 4th, 2008, 02:21 AM COMC's nuclear med dep't in full blast (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/04/04/feat/comc.s.nuclear.med.dep.t.in.full.blast.html)
A BONE scan heralded the operation of the first Nuclear Medicine department in Northern Mindanao, situated inside the sprawling Cagayan de Oro Medical Center (COMC).
Bone scan using nuclear medicine's cutting edge diagnostic machines can better detect and evaluate trauma, arthritis, and cancer of the bones than with the traditional X-rays.
Nuclear medicine is a branch of medicine that uses radiation to diagnose or treat disease.
With the use of radioactive tracer, the thyroid, bones, heart and many other organs can be easily imaged, and disorders in their function revealed.
Since COMC Nuclear Medicine's kick-off last March 14, 15 thankful patients have availed of the sophisticated diagnostic and treatment capabilities of its advanced facilities, such as GE's Millennium MPR.
The Millennium MPR helps eliminate guesswork and potentially unnecessary surgery, while facilitating the process of creating an appropriate treatment plan for the patient.
Nuclear Med tests involve injections of radioisotopes into the veins, which are then localized in the different areas of the body. Each test provides an intensely precise picture of the area resulting in a significantly greater opportunity for any physician to accurately diagnose a patient's symptoms.
Tests are safe, simple, painless, and there are virtually no side effects.
Therapeutic procedures are available for Thyroid Cancer and Hyperthyroidism. For diagnostic imaging, available are bone scan, thyroid scan and uptake, cardiac perfusion imaging, cardiac viability scan, kidney scan and GFR, liver study, lung perfusion, lung ventilation, breast scan and RBC tagging.
COMC's Nuclear Med is located at the first floor of the Diagnostic Imaging Bldg. It can be reached through Tel. no. 711875 local 423. (Press release)

Firm builds world’s 4th largest shipyard in Misamis Oriental
By Maria Cecilia Rodriguez

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines -- The construction of what its South Korean builders claim will be the world’s fourth largest shipyard facility has started in Misamis Oriental.
The $2-billion facility is expected to employ about 45,000 people -- including engineers, welders, fabricators and administrative personnel -- within the next three years, when the facility is expected to become fully operational, according to Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd. and Philippine officials.
The facility is being built in an area covering 441.8 hectares at the Phividec Industrial Estate located in the towns of Villanueva and Tagoloan, some 30 kilometers east of this city.
Hanjin said the construction of the shipyard would put the Philippines on the list of countries with the largest shipyard facilities, after South Korea, Japan and China.
But there will be human costs.
More than 200 families in two villages in Villanueva town will have to be relocated to give way to the shipyard, according to project officials.
Other coastal villages in Tagoloan town will also be affected.
Yun So Kim, Hanjin administrative manager, said the company was on track with the project’s timetable and that it expected to finish the first phase within the second half of the year.
He said the completion of the first phase would enable Hanjin to produce 80,000 tons a year of outfittings and pipes, among other items.
Kim said the civil works started after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Hanjin and the Phividec Industrial Authority (PIA) in Cagayan de Oro in January. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo witnessed the signing.
It would be Hanjin’s second shipbuilding complex in the country.
Hanjin also operates a shipyard in Zambales which, as of last October, had a total direct hire of nearly 5,000 people, according to the Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority.
The Hanjin shipyard in Zambales recently figured in the news when at least five workers died in two work-related accidents within the facility in a span of three months.
The SBMA found Hanjin guilty of violating at least seven safety standards and ordered the company to comply with international safety standards.
Kim said that aside from civil works aspect, Hanjin, together with PIA, began public consultations in areas that would be affected by the construction of the Misamis Oriental facility.
During the consultations, communities voiced concern over relocation and livelihood issues, citing the failure of the PIA in the past to address their needs.
The PIA is the government agency mandated to administer the 3,000-hectare Phividec estate and takes charge of the relocation of the affected communities.
In a recent consultation with residents of the village of Tambobong in Villanueva, village officials criticized the PIA for not keeping commitments it made to families displaced by projects within the estate.
Some residents also said their crops were bulldozed without prior notice.
“We admit that the lands where our houses are standing are not ours. We are just occupants here. But what we only ask is the assurance that we will be justly compensated with the cost of building our houses, including the crops that we’ve planted,” village leader Delilah Abellanosa said.
Hanjin said it assured residents they would be compensated fairly for the crop damage as a result of the shipyard’s construction.
Kim said that for Phase 1 from 2008 to 2009, Hanjin would be investing $720 million for the purchase of shipbuilding facilities from Aveva and other foreign manufacturers.
“We started importing materials from Korea and other countries last January. We also use local materials but these are more expensive,” Kim said.
He said the $2 billion that Hanjin was sinking in the project was the company’s biggest investment yet outside of South Korea.
Kim said Hanjin was also focusing on developing the skills of its newly hired engineers so they could meet the company’s standards in shipbuilding.
“We already have a training center within the Hanjin compound (in Phividec) where all those who will be hired will undergo skills development,” Kim said.
Hanjin has said it is trying to thresh out land issues that delayed the project last year, such as the issue with the Jacinto group of companies, which previously owned part of the 441.8 hectares targeted for the shipyard.
