Safe to say: The statue of Jesus Christ at Divine Mercy, El Salvador City (part and one of CdeO's tourist destinations) I can say one of the tallest statue in the whole world. I don't know ano ang maging ranking niya. :)
This Divine Mercy somehow is the spiritual growth of Cagayan de Oro and this island. :)
Farirah August 14th, 2008, 07:43 AM ^^Maganda ang exposure ng Kagay-an Festival ngayon. Humahataw sa pagka-bongga at saya.
It's because Cagayanons nowadays are beginning to discover their unique kaleidoscopic culture and their rich history. The aim is to make Kagay-an Festival well-knowned to the whole world and bongga just like Sinulog, Ati-Atihan, MasKara, and Kadayawan in the long run. :)

Farirah August 14th, 2008, 08:04 AM ^^As what Mr. Ferrer said, hindi raw naapektuhan ang sales nila.
Hope Mr. Ferrer was realistic enough when he said that. Hope long term solution yan para lalong madagdagan at buhay na buhay ang market ng SM dito. ^^
Farirah August 14th, 2008, 08:40 AM Another glorious past of Cagayan de Oro. :)
Share ko lang ha. Even the historian Ms. Paulita Roa, alam niya eto.
Anyway, my great, great grandfather said that after the short lived independence of Cagayan de Misamis, Tirso Neri, the richest Cagayanon in his time and a migrant from Laguna, had bought this mid-sized ship coming from Japan as a gift for his wife. However, this ship was transformed into a battleship to patrol and guard Macajalar Bay against the invading American forces.
Yun lang hindi sinuswerte, binumba ang barko ng mga Kano at tuloy nalunod. Until now, my father had this great belief that the historic ship ay nasa kalaliman lang ng Macajalar Bay. :)
Hehehe

JM Opens New Showroom
By Mark D. Francisco
Sunstar CDO
JM Poultry & Live Stock Supply (Cebu), Inc., exclusive distributor of Unifeeds products, has opened its new showroom at ADM Building at Max Y. Suniel, Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City.
Operations manager Victor Amogues III of JMPLS said that their new showroom reflects new architectural designs which are visually appealing to customers. " Amidst the crisis, we still invested on the aesthetic side of things, something luxurious for an agrivet ", he said.
With this development, Amogues assured patrons of Unifeeds that they are not increasing the prices of their products in their new showroom manned by JM Poultry & Livestock Supply (Cebu), Inc.
Unifeeds is a spillover effect of JM's success in the local agrivet scene. The company is engaged in the manufacturing of hog and poultry feeds. They've been in this business for more than 20 years. Their products are directly marketed and distributed by its mother company which is JM Poultry & Livestock Supply (Cebu), Inc.
Started in 1984 by Dr. Avelino and Elenita de Manuel (a veterinarian and animal nutritionist couple), JM was engaged into selling branded feeds and veterinary products with a customer base made up of backyard raisers.
Among their products are Milko-Plus, Nutrilac Booster Crumble, Nutrilac-Plus Crumble, Nutri-Gro Pellet, Nutri-Big Pellet, Preg-Sow Pellet and Litter Saver Pellet.

MANILA, Philippines - The government is offering foreign companies two big-ticket investments in Mindanao worth P3.04 billion to develop the domestic halal industry and unlock its export potentials.
The Halal Food Industry Economic Hub to be put up consists of the Halal Economic Zone in Davao City and a halal model poultry farm in Cagayan De Oro City.
The proposed economic zone, which will cost at least P2.2 billion, will be the centerpiece of the investment portfolio, Agriculture Assistant Secretary Clayton A. Olalia said in a report.
The economic zone is expected to generate 24,000 new jobs and boost the country’s export earnings by at least $200 million per year, said Mr. Olalia, officer-in-charge of the halal sector, said to be worth $500 billion globally.
The other investment proposal is an P840-million project to build a model poultry farm with research laboratories, abattoirs and other modern facilities.
The investment portfolios, Mr. Olalia said, are open to companies in the Middle East, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the United States. - BusinessWorld

A Statement of Solidarity of the Caucus of Mindanao and Palawan Governors.
We, the Provincial Governors of Mindanao and Palawan assembled in a caucus, after consultations and exchange of ideas and sentiments, unanimously agree and declare the following:
1. That regardless of party affiliations or religious persuasions, we remain united for peace and progress amidst the controversy arising from the proposed Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) prepared and initiated by the Government of the Republic of the Philippines (GRP) Peace Panel and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) which seeks to provide the preliminary parameters for the establishment of genuine and enduring peace in Mindanao.
2. That we fully support the peace process and the efforts of the GRP Peace Panel in pursuing measures that would finally put an end to more than 35 years of fratricidal conflict that have claimed the lives of so many people, destroyed billions worth of properties and brought untold sufferings to innocent civilians caught in the crossfire of the longest-running secessionist war.
3. That we appeal to the Supreme Court of the Philippines to resolve the issues related to the MOA-AD with dispatch to minimize misunderstanding and conflict among stakeholders and partners for peace.
4. That we call upon the GRP Peace Panel and MILF to adopt actions and decisions relative to the MOA-AD within the legal framework and the rule of law, and make them the foundation for subsequent agreements.
5. That we enjoin the GRP Peace panel to conduct wider and comprehensive consultations with local government units (LGUs) to help resolve issues that would affect the peace process in Mindanao.
6. That we urgently ask all our colleagues, particularly the leaders of the country at all levels, to exercise utmost restraint, prudence and statesmanship in their actions and statements pertaining to the present controversy considering that the MOA-AD is not the final Peace Agreement and will be always be (Ed. sic) to Congressional actions.
7. That we condemn in strongest terms any form of violence perpetrated by any group, party or individual that will undermine the pursuit of peace which tend to escalate the conflict and derail the Peace Process, and that we call upon the National Government to apply the full force of the law against these violators.
8. That we call on the National Government and the concerned LGUs to immediately provide all the needed assistance to the displaced and affected civilians in the areas of conflict.

GearX August 15th, 2008, 04:23 AM MANG INASALS REPEAT OVER VICTORY
MisOr Meteors oust Bravehearts
Posted August 15th, 2008 by liga
BAGUIO City – The Iloilo Mang Inasals again underscored how tough a road warriors they are by repeating over the Baguio Victory, 107-100, and booked a quarterfinals berth in the Smart-Liga Pilipinas playoffs.
Defying the raucous crowd at the University of Baguio here, Erwin Sta. Maria and Co. once more dominated the home team from start to finish and cancelled out the twice-to-beat, homecourt edge of the seventh-seeded Victory.
The Mang Inasals, seeded 11th at the end of the 13-leg, 7-week elimination phase of the tournament sponsored by Smart, Accel, Molten, Metathione, Nature's spring, Burlington, and Laptop Exchange, beat the Victory Tuesday night at the University of the Cordilleras, 93-82, that paved the way for their do-or-die encounter.
Sta. Maria, the former Baguio stalwart, topscored for the second straight game with 27 points, Francis Barcellano added 18, while two more others also finished with the same output as the Mang Inasals now braced for their best-of-five quarterfinals showdown with the third seeded Taguig Batang Global starting on Monday (August 18).
By winning twice against the Victory over at the country's Summer Capital, the Mang Inasals became the first to win against the home team. They joined the Lipa Batangas Barakos, the Laguna Trace Stallions and the Misamis Oriental Meteors as wildcard entries.
Over at the Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro, the Meteors edged out the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts, 72-71, to likewise advance into the next round and complete the quarterfinal cast of the country's newest regional cage meet.
By getting the job done, the Meteors became the first wild card team to win their series outright.
The Bravehearts had a chance to turn the game around and extend the series, but missed the opportunity when they failed to bank in all six of their free throws at end game.
The Meteors are set to face the Pagadian Explorers in their own quarterfinals showdown, also a best-of-five series, that starts on Monday.
The other quarterfinals pairing will have league leader Cebu Ninos taking on the Laguna Stallions and the Pampanga Buddies clashing with the Batangas Barakos. All four teams begin their respective series on August 21.

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- A closed-door meeting between government peace negotiators and Mindanao governors Thursday failed to sway those who opposed a deal on the size of a future expanded Moro homeland.
But 21 governors out of 27 unanimously declared their support for the continuation of the peace process, and condemned the latest violence in North Cotabato.
Visit the Beijing Olympics 2008 blog
In their communiqué, the governors also affirmed that the controversial Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) was "not yet final" in itself, but only "part and parcel in crafting a comprehensive final peace agreement."
"We, the Mindanao governors, uphold the people's right to plebiscite within the context of the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE), and that we are one in the understanding that the MOA now pending before the Supreme Court still requires Congressional approval before it can be implemented," said Misamis Occidental Mayor Leo Ocampos, president of the Governors League of the Philippines.
Despite the reassuring tone, however, officials opposed to the MOA showed no signs of holding their horses.
"We support today's declarations on the need to continue the peace process. However, we remain supportive of the Supreme Court petition questioning the validity of the MOA," Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rolando Yebes said.
With or without a plebiscite, Governor Yebes said his constituents - especially the native Subanens - see no reason why their province should be included in the BJE considering that "95 percent of our population consists of Christians and Lumads."
At least eight Zamboanga del Norte towns are included in the 'Special Intervention Areas" of the BJE, where a plebiscite is to be held not later than 25 years upon the signing of the final peace agreement.
North Cotabato Governor Jesus Sacdalan, one of the Mindanaoan politicians who filed the SC petition, said he hopes the High Court would invalidate portions of the MOA- especially to those pertaining to territory.
Meanwhile, GRP peace panel chairman Rodolfo Garcia apologized for the "gaffes" surrounding the dissemination of the MOA to local officials.
Garcia said both panels thought it best to temporarily keep under wraps the content of the agreement, pending the official signing in Malaysia.
But he said the confidentiality of the MOA was crucial to both parties, as it would "preserve the integrity of the agreement before its actual signing."

“Service to the people has merits.”
This, in gist, was the message of City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula after he led City Hall officials and employees in paying tribute to the department head of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) who recently retired from the government service. In a simple ceremony held yesterday at the City Tourism Hall, Mayor Jaraula presented former City Social Welfare and Development Officer Belen C. Galdo with a “Plaque of Merit and Appreciation” after serving as a public servant in a span of 42 years. Mayor Jaraula particularly cited Galdo for her …”long, loyal and very productive service to the City of Cagayan de Oro in the field of social services, thus, greatly enhancing the lives of the people, especially of the disadvantaged and the less fortunate.” The citation given to Galdo came after the City Mayor bared plans to institutionalize the tribute as a simple token and accolades for the services rendered by all retiring City Hall department heads and chiefs of offices to the people and the City of Cagayan de Oro, in general. City Councilors Roger Abaday and Zaldy Ocon, several department heads and chiefs of office and personnel from the CSWDO and other offices witnessed the late afternoon occasion. In a related development, Mayor Jaraula led the opening and blessing of the New Tahanan Ng Kabataan situated in barangay Lumbia, this city. In his message, Mayor Jaraula called on philanthropists, kind-hearted individuals and civic groups of the city to donate basic amenities and recreational facilities in order to make the youth center a more pleasant and convenient place for the minor occupants. The newly-built P2.5-million worth city government-run boys’ town center can accommodate at least 50 youth offenders and minors, and is expected to help decongest the densely-populated old youth center near the City Hospital. City Councilors Dante Pajo, Simeon Licayan and Adrian Barba, City Hall department heads and chiefs of office and members of the barangay council of Lumbia led by chairman Wilhelm Valencia also graced the affair.

The Department of Agriculture is seeking foreign investments for its proposed halal food industry economic hub in Mindanao.
Investments are being sought for at least two big-ticket projects worth P3.04 billion.
The proposed hub will consist of a Halal Economic Zone in Davao City and a halal model poultry farm in Cagayan De Oro City.
The two proposed projects in the South would help transform Mindanao into one of five “super regions” in the country.
In a report to Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, assistant secretary Clayton Olalia said the proposed Halal Economic Zone, which will cost at least P2.2 billion to establish. To be located in Davao City, the zone is expected to generate 24,000 new jobs for Muslim Filipinos, and boost the Philippines’ export earnings by at least $200 million per year.
The other investment proposal packaged by the DA is an P840-million project involving the establishment of a halal model poultry farm complete with research laboratories, abattoirs and other modern facilities.
Around 32,000 Muslim farmers and entrepreneurs in Mindanao are expected to benefit from the proposed initiative.
The DA is offering the halal industry investment portfolio to interested investors in the Middle East, Europe, Asia-Pacific and the USA.
“Filipino business groups, too, may consider other investment opportunities such as the production of halal animal feed, establishment of livestock and poultry halal farms, abattoir or slaughterhouse, processing, halal restaurants and food establishments, and halal food laboratory testing facilities,” Olalia said.
The global halal food market is valued at around $500 billion.
The Philippines could easily earn at least $5 billion a year by tapping just one percent of the lucrative halal market, Olalia said.
“The Philippines has a comparative advantage over many other countries when it comes to developing its halal food industry considering that it is bird flu-free and generally free of the foot-and-mouth disease,” Yap had said.
“Moreover, the Philippines, specifically Mindanao, can count on a reliable supply of feed ingredients like corn, rice, copra meal and fish meal to make its halal food exports credible and genuine,” Yap added.

HUBEI, China – While a medal remains elusive for the Philippines in the Olympic Games in Beijing, a team of 49 Filipino math wizards all bagged honors here, winning one silver and 48 bronze medals in the China Primary Math Olympiad.
Michael Brodeth, a student of Colegio de San Agustin in Makati City, won second honor in the tournament held last Monday and Tuesday at the Yichang No. 20 Middle School in Yichang City, 300 kilometers from Wuhan, both in Hubei province.
The 48 other members of the team, composed of elementary students from private and public elementary schools in the Philippines, each managed to earn third-honor recognition from what is dubbed by the Mathematics Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG) as the second hardest math tournament in the world.
This year’s Team Philippines was not comprised of students from Chinese schools, as had been the case in previous math Olympiads.
Dr. Eduardo dela Cruz, MTG vice president who accompanied the 49-student Philippine delegation, said that the performance of the young team was “unexpected” but was a great achievement considering that all the members each won an honor.
“The team was very, very impressive,” Dela Cruz said.
“This tournament is known to be a very tough one and we have only managed to win one gold medal here since we started to send participants in 2003. Usually, we only win a few silver or a few bronze each year in previous years. But now we have 49 honors and all our representatives each won an honor for the country,” Dela Cruz told The STAR.
Among the winners of third honor equivalent to a bronze finish were Jiles Ramos of Rosa L. Susano Elementary School, Dennis Andrew de Chavez of Parañaque Science High School, Georemie Arrienne Concepcion of Philippine Science High School, and Romelie Chelsea Escobia of Negros Occidental Science High School.
The other bronze winners were Dennis Betito Jr., and Lara Andrea Montales of Colegio de San Agustin; Beatriz Michelle Go of Immaculate Concepcion Academy; Jegine Joy Perania of Iloilo Central Commercial High School; James Daniel Cordon and Juancho Miguel Morales of PAREF Southridge School; Nigel Zildjan Limsiy of Chiang Kai Shek College, Francis Concepcion of Philippine Cultural College, John Alexander Co of Xavier School, Mark John Dy of Mother Goose School, and Dominic Ursicimus Ong and Seline Irabel Cua of St. Jude Catholic School.
The other bronze winners were Deanne Rochelle Abdao and Janine Caryl Bisnar, both of the Integrated Montessori Center; Paradau Laarnie Valerio of Star Montessori School; Katrina Isabel Elicano of De La Salle-Zobel School; Casey Oliver Turingan and Danielle Alexandrine Madriaga of San Beda College-Alabang; Ma. Christina Guillermo of OB Montessori Center-Greenhills; Bea Gian Carla Lapitan of Morning Star Montessori School; Jasmine Marie Gamboa of St. John’s Institute; Fae Nicole Serrano and Gerard Domingo of Young Shepherd’s School; Jerome Vincent Tagaro of St. Jerome Integrated School of Cabuyao; Arvin Paul Castillo and Marven Xaviery Manzano of St. Francis of Assisi College; Paul Ryan Ong of Uno High School; Anna Loraine Ansong of St. Scholastica’s College-Westgrove; Daniel Ratilla of Philippine Institute of Quezon City; Roberto Mari Bontia of Manresa School; Leandre Noel Kiu of Pace Academy; Prince Michael Balanay of Colegio de San Agustin-Biñan, Kimberly Alyza Tee of Oro Christian Grace School; Carlo Patrick Tan, Kinnichi Tan, Laureen Eden Saavedra, and Matt Levin Tan of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School; Jose Agerico Bacal of Rosevale School-Cagayan de Oro; Tatyana Marie Gonzaga of Universidad de Santa Isabel; Royce Dy of Kong Hua School; Ray Cesar Malundo of Don Bosco Technical Institute; Yvonne Gaile Molina of Blessed Light International Christian Academy; Timothy James Tan of Trinity Christian School; and Akkiara Symon May Sawali.
Dr. Simon Chua, MTG Philippines president, said the consistent impressive performance highlighted the fact that Filipinos can excel in mathematics.
“We should promote this interest, this love for mathematics not just to win trophies and medals in international tournaments but to pave the way for students to go into engineering and science and technology courses. Our country needs engineers and scientists,” Chua said.

TAGOLOAN, MISAMIS ORIENTAL — The Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (ICTSI). "We’re relieved because we didn’t really have the expertise and the marketing connections for realizing the full potential of the container terminal," administrator Nimfa Along-Albania said on Wednesday. Manuel de Jesus, ICTSI business development director, said the company has exceeded revenue projections based on the number of boxes or containers handled. The group has been handling the terminal since the middle of the year. "The market also reacts positively. donnex August 15th, 2008, 03:50 PM Affected families in Laguindingan Int'l Airport project site moved to resettlement sites by Babes Jacob-Rebultan
Cagayan de Oro City (15 August) -- OF 363 affected families at the Laguindingan International Airport project site in Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental, about 212 are already relocated to two resettlement sites as of February, this year.
According to Engr. Ryan Gico of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC-10), of the 363 affected families, 124 were relocated to the Phase 1 Resettlement Site in Barangay San Isidro and 88 families to the Phase 2 Resettlement Site in Barangay Tubajon.
He said the relocation was undertaken by the Office of Resettlement and Relocation of the municipal government of Laguindingan, in close coordination with the DOTC, National Housing Authority (NHA), Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR), the provincial government of Misamis Oriental, and the Ayala Corporation.
The Phase 1 relocation site can accommodate 248 lots, with provision of housing units under the Gawad Kalinga (GK) program, while Phase 2 has provision of 109 duplex core type housing units that can accommodate 218 families, he reported.
The construction of the 109 duplex housing units, started in April 2008, is 90% complete as of July 31, 2008 or 0.05% ahead of schedule, wherein 74 units were substantially completed, while the remaining 35 units are still undergoing construction, he also reported.
He clarified that the NHA committed to complete the construction of the remaining 35 units by August 10, this year.
With the completion of 74 duplex housing units, 88 families already occupy 44 of these, he added.
Once completely constructed, 65 duplex or 130 housing units will be made available to transferees in Phase 2, Gico said.
For the other 21 families who could not be accommodated in the 109 duplex houses, they, including their extended families, will be assisted by the provincial government in terms of allowing them to construct their houses within the Phase 2 Resettlement Site, and providing the needed construction materials.
A DOTC project status report on the Laguindingan Airport Development Project (LADP) as of July 31 also stated that the site development of the Phase 2 Relocation Site is 95.24% complete. Its construction works include on-site water works, road works and drainage works.
Its target date of completion is also on August 10, 2008.
A total of P40 million was allotted by the national government thru the NHA for the site development of the Phase 2 Relocation Site, while P25 million was also allotted for the construction of 109 duplex core type housing units.
Meanwhile, Engr. Gico reported that all the 363 affected structure-owners at the airport site are entitled to disturbance allowance or the move-in allowance of P10,000 per family.
On April 14, 2008, the DOTC, through the provincial government of Misamis Oriental, started distributing the disturbance compensation/move-in allowance to affected structure-owners.
As of July 31, this year, a total of 89 affected families of the 363 identified affected structure owners were already compensated in the amount of P10,000 each family by the DOTC Central Office.
Lately, Gico revealed that to avoid the delay in the payments of the disturbance allowance, the DOTC, in coordination with the inter-agency committee, decided to divide into two components the disbursements and processing of the said move-in allowances.
They came up with an agreement that DOTC Manila will handle only 119 families that included the 89 families already compensated, while 244 families will be handled by the provincial government of Misamis Oriental, he explained.
With this, a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) has to be signed by the provincial government and the Director General of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) instead of the DOTC central office.
The engineer said once the MOA is signed, the CAAP will facilitate the transfer of funds to the provincial government of Misamis Oriental, which will then process and disburse funds for the disturbance allowance of about 244 affected families,
He clarified with these efforts, the disbursements will be fast-tracked and bureaucratic procedures will be lessened.
The documents and vouchers are now being prepared or processed so that once the funds are available the provincial government will immediately release the funds without delay.
With regards to the main airport construction, Engr. Gico said the civil works started in January 2008 and is 3.65% complete with a slippage of 1.24% or ahead of the target schedule of 38.579%.
The airport, he said, will occupy 387 hectares and 80% of the area will be utilized for the runway.
The government and concerned agencies are hopeful that the runway will be partially inaugurated by April 2010 and totally completed by January 2012.
Engr. Gico said once the Laguindingan International Airport is completed, this will be turned over to the CAAP (formerly the Airport Transportation Office), which will manage its operations.
The Lumbia Airport in Cagayan de Oro City will then be closed because all the towers and facilities will be transferred to the new airport in Laguindingan.

“Kailangang-kailangan ko ng isang sponsor who will help me with the text votes.
Makakasama nila sa maituturing na best performance of their lives sina Regine, Basil, Cueshe, Freestyle, Itchyworms, Southborder, Hajji Alejandro, Verni Varga, Luke Mijares, Duncan Ramos, Jet Pangan, Pupil, Callalily at ang UP Concert Chorus. Ang ultimate finale ay mapapanood naman sa Linggo, Agosto 17.

Hindi pala pinayagan ng GMA 7 ang kanilang mga exclusive artists na lumabas sa mga shows ng bagong TV5. Naisulat ko kasi na baka sa binagong network magkaroon ng chance na magkatrabaho ang mga artista ng magkalabang ABS-CBN at GMA since some of their artists were included in some of the new shows of TV5 that were launched last August 9. Paolo Contis, for one, has been reminded by his manager that he is an exclusive GMA artist at ’di puwedeng magtrabaho sa mga kalabang istasyon.
Over 200 teams start collegiate league battle

THE FIRST PHASE OF THE 2008 Philippine Collegiate Championship is now in full blast, with a total of 213 squads from nine regions playing with a single goal: to become the country’s best collegiate team.
University of Nueva Caceres leads all challengers after posting seven straight wins to pace the 4th Naga City Intercollegiate Basketball League which features teams from Quezon and the Bicol provinces.
Ateneo de Naga and University of Sta. Isabel share second place with identical 5-2 records.
In Region 6 (Leyte and Samar), Western Leyte Colleges and Eastern Visayas State University show the way in the 10-team field.
Capitol University, meanwhile, is on a three-game winning run to pace the Cagayan de Oro Students Athletic Association tournament in Region 7, covering Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. De Oro Colleges-Phinma occupies second spot.
The Duterte Basketball League in Region 8 (Davao, Gen. Santos) is also ongoing, with Emar College Red Horse and the Agro Industrial Foundation College Sailors seizing the early lead.
Leading the pack in the Zamboanga-Sibugay Basketball Association tournament in Region 9 (Zamboanga provinces) are in Universidad de Zamboanga-Ipil and the Kabansalan Technical Institute, which hurdled their first two assignments.
The participating teams are playing in 27 mother leagues, include the major ones in in Metro Manila—UAAP, NCAA, Naascu and Cusa—and Cesafi of Cebu City.
Champions League chair Rey Gamboa said the tournament provides teams and players the opportunity to look beyond their “mother leagues.”
ona August 17th, 2008, 09:31 AM Sana i-telecast din nila yung Kapuso Night kasi marami silang talent na dadalo dun. The Lambagohan Parade is also one of the most unique parades because it will run through a river. Hopefully I can watch this special event.
ona August 17th, 2008, 10:20 AM Baka naman magkaroon ng Sky Third Bridge mula Gaisano City papunta sa Ayala tapos maging anchor dep't store ng Ayala ang Gaisano. CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY -- One of the 17 Mindanao governors who met with Malacañang representatives here on Aug. 14 Saturday denied a statement they issued endorsed the controversial Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
Zamboanga del Norte Gov. Rolando Yebes said the manifesto they signed, which was published in major newspapers including the Inquirer Saturday, was not an endorsement of the MOA-AD but only of the peace process.
“The manifesto does not endorse the MOA-AD, but it supports the peace process,” Yebes said, contradicting statements made by Misamis Oriental Gov. Leo Ocampos.
Yebes said that even if he had signed the manifesto of support for the peace process, he had some reservations and he made this known by affixing a note after his signature.
“Even Palawan Governor Jose Reyes expressed similar reservations when he signed the manifesto. Governor Reyes would want the barangays in his province excluded,” he said.
Misamis Oriental Gov. Oscar Moreno said, “The bigger issue is peace. We cannot be fragmented. In effect, it was like ‘sige okay na lang’ since the MOA-AD is an avenue for peace.”
Ocampos, president of the League of Provinces of the Philippines, said the governors opted for the pursuit of peace and its components by signing the manifesto.
Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John Amante, on the other hand, said that by signing the manifesto, he had openly declared his full support for the MOA.
“The MOA-AD is part of the peace process. The document is the first step towards a lasting peace in Mindanao,” Amante told the Inquirer by phone.
Amante said he understood that the opposition of some governors was due to the government’s failure to consult them on the issue. Grace Albasin, Franklin Caliguid and Julie Alipala, Inquirer Mindanao

dark_knight_detectve August 17th, 2008, 02:39 PM Nescafe factory converts waste into energy (http://www.bworldonline.com/Weekender081508/main.php?id=environment3)
Instead of tossing the gunk left after brewing coffee, the Cagayan de Oro factory of Nescafe uses it to generate energy.
The factory’s Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Boiler (AFBB) is a state-of-the-art technology that recycles and burns 100% spent coffee grounds of bunker fuel a day.
"Because less oil is burned to generate steam, the AFBB helps reduce environmental pollution and [minimizes] energy costs," said Ed Legasto, Senior Vice President of Nestle Philippines, Inc. (NPI).
As manager of the Cagayan de Oro factory, he said that by using biomass as a substitute for bunker fuel, "we [help] prevent the adverse air emission pollution such as Sulfur Dioxide (Sox) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), which is a natural by-product of fossil fuels."
With the installation of a pollution control device called the Electrostatic Precipitator (EP), the whole AFBB system complies with the Clean Air Act or RA 8749, Mr. Legasto added.
Recycling coffee grounds
The process of recycling spent coffee grounds begins after the green coffee beans are roasted.
The ground-roasted coffee is extracted with hot water inside the percolation batteries or extraction cells to produce the coffee extract.
While the coffee extract undergoes spray-drying to produce the company’s best-selling coffee, the spent coffee grounds are sent to the disposal system to be used as fuel. The heat produced from this process is then used for the steam requirements of the Cagayan de Oro Factory.
Mr. Legasto said that the AFBB is not the first environment-friendly technology that Nescafe utilized.
As early as 1994, the factory had been using the concept of biomass disposal using the Lurgi Waste Heat Boiler System.
"[This system also] uses coffee grounds, by-products after extracting coffee liquor from roasted coffee beans to generate steam."
He added that the AFBB has a higher capacity that can handle not only solid biomass from coffee processes but also colored water concentrate.
The company has not limited its enviromental efforts to just within the company. It has also implemented several programs designed to create environmental awareness.
For example, its Cagayan de Oro Factory launched a Solid Waster Management Program designed to establish proper garbage segregation and disposal in Purok 11 of Barangay Tablon, where the factory is located.
The program involved the creation of a communal eco garden and eco-center, the selling of recyclable materials from segregated household wastes, and the manufacture of organic fertilizers from biodegradable wastes

calyx2008 August 18th, 2008, 05:07 AM State’s Misamis Oriental industrial zone vows to clear site for Hanjin
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. (Phividec) Industrial Authority is determined to clear industrial areas in the towns of Tagoloan and Villanueva to give way for the return of South Korean industrial giant Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd. next month.
The $2-billion shipyard project, which will cover 441.8 hectares, was supposed to start early this year after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between Hanjin and Phividec officials, witnessed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in January. Project activities, however, were suspended in May due to problems with local government executives hosting the proposed shipyard.
"We extended the memorandum, which will expire on Sept. 10," said Phividec administrator Nimfa Along-Albania last week.
The agreement was originally good only until last week, Aug. 10. "[The extension will] to allow us to move more than 800 families to the relocation site," noted Ms. Albania.
Hanjin officials, who have declined interviews with the media amid several controversies the company had figured in, have yet to issue an official statement on their plans to resume operation in Misamis Oriental.
But Ms. Albania said she was in constant communication with Hanjin officials with respect to resuming operations at the state-run Phividec industrial estate.
Various concerns and issues had resulted in the suspension of Hanjin’s initial work for its shipyard project.
These included the relocation of residents in the area and problems with local government units of two towns, including allegations that an executive of the Korean firm had tried to bribe town officials on quarrying activities that would supply gravel needed at the project site.
Local government officials, however, said they had realized there was no bribe offer and that there was only a misunderstanding during a dialogue involving supply of gravel from the two towns.
"There were communication gaps and we only need regular communication to address the concerns and issues," Ms. Albania told BusinessWorld.
She said trainings were ongoing for the residents who would likely be hired for the project. Ms. Albania noted that from only 30, the number of trainees has increased to about 100 with some now temporarily employed at Hanjin’s shipyard complex in Subic, Zambales.
During a public consultation early this year, Eduardo Rubic, Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp.’s local project coordinator, assured residents of the towns of Villanueva and Tagoloan that they would get top priority in hiring workers for the project as long as they have the skills.
"The [locals] found out that more jobs are available; there are many job opportunities opening for the residents," said Ms. Albania, noting that the agency was coordinating with the local and provincial government units in developing the relocation site.
An elementary school is being constructed at the new communities being put up for those who would be relocated.
Ms. Albania said that whatever plans Hanjin has, her agency is expecting to sign the lease agreement with the Korean firm by September.
"I will have a meeting with Hanjin officials next week to discuss how things are and to update them that the site is cleared for them to come in and we’ll discuss what our next steps are," said Ms. Albania. — Geefe P. Alba

calyx2008 August 18th, 2008, 05:13 AM My Family - All winners at SM
By Tessa L. Tagle
THINKING of SM always brings a smile to my face.
I remember passing by, day by day, watching it being built, anxious for the day when we will finally have our very own SM Mall.
Visit the Beijing Olympics 2008 blog
On opening day last 2002, I was so ecstatic to know that my husband received an invitation from one of the mall tenants. I remember the goosebumps I had, entering the mall for the first time: it felt like we were not in Cagayan de Oro but rather in one of our vacations in Manila.
I am very happy to share that through the years we have gathered memorable moments in our life at SM, which I know we will treasure for the rest of our lives...
In summer of 2003, SM opened a Star Club Competition for kids aged four to seven.
One day that summer, my husband and I read the print ads. It was announcing the screening for SM Star club members. We were so excited to sign up my then six-year-old daughter, Mia Franchezka Tagle, believing it was just a summer activity for kids not a competition.
When we arrived to the screening, we were so surprised to see kids made up, with hair professionally done, wearing amazing costumes. We thought this must be a special club for kids with great personality and talent.
A week after that, we received a call informing us that my daughter was among the 12 finalists. We realized it was a competition after all.
The whole summer was filled with workshops, talent shows, radio station tours, TV interviews and it concluded with a final competition.
This was our first exposure to competitions like this. Day by day, tension and pressure were building up. I kept on reminding my daughter that the main reason we signed her up was for her to have fun that summer and enjoy the experience.
We were with her all the way, keeping her happy and letting her know that it was a fun summer activity.
I can still remember the happiness we felt when my daughter was declared winner that night! We were in shock.
We were overflowing with pride and my daughter was overwhelmed with all the gifts she received as the winner.
That wasn't the end of our experience that summer. On the competition night, it was announced that the winner will be sent to Manila to be presented as provincial winner during the Metro Manila SM Star Club Competition in SM Mega Mall.
That was, again, a pleasant surprise, which we were very excited about: an unexpected vacation for the whole family.
The Manila trip was very exciting. It was a totally different experience. We went there with marketing personnel from SM City Cagayan de Oro and met by SM representatives in Manila.
The accommodation was very special...we felt like celebrities. It was, indeed, an amazing summer.
In September 2007, we again saw a print ad for the screening of the SM Little stars competition.
Because of our previous wonderful experience we asked our little boys, then four and six years old, if they were willing to join. My four-year-old son, Andre Roberto Tagle, was very eager. He even kept on dragging us up to the Event Center thinking the contest was already starting.
Funny thing is, he even announced in their school that he joined the competition. Luckily, he qualified for the Regional finals. He was still very young and had not even participated in a school program before, so we really don't know what to expect. We were just enthusiastic that he was joining the contest.
We only had two days to rehearse. During the Regional Finals, this childlike innocence really shone through making him the winner of the night.
We were again filled with happiness and pride. Together with our family and friends we were all leaping for joy. But again, it wasn't the end of the experience, ahead laid a greater challenge: the National Competition!
In barely a month, we went to Manila for the Nationwide Search of SM Little Stars.
This was totally new and a little frightening for us parents, but my son seemed unaffected and genuinely enjoying the whole thing.
The pressure there was more intense and most of the finalists had trainers.
The schedule was very hectic and very demanding. Our wake up time was at 5:30 a.m. The call time was 7 a.m. and the practice ended at 6 p.m.
Though very tired, I still let my son go to Mall of Asia to have fun.
First and foremost, we wanted him to enjoy all those experiences so he can look back with a smile, remember nothing but the happy times he had. Indeed, he remained happy during the rehearsals and, unlike the other contestants, the growing pressure and stress did not get to him.
On the night of the competition, his spontaneity, natural wit and charms won the hearts not only of the judges but the audience as well. When he was declared the National Winner, it was truly a very pleasant surprise.
We went to Manila not expecting to win but only to enjoy the moment. Until now, I still feel like crying remembering the pride and joy that is beyond words.
When we came home, we were met at the airport by SM marketing manager, Globien Salcedo, and another marketing staff, Bing. There was a streamer congratulating my son Andre for being the Grand Winner of SM Little Stars. We proceeded to the SM Event Center where there was an ongoing press conference. My son and I were interviewed.
He answered innocently, "I won because I said the poem nicely".
The experience was totally incredible; it was indeed a memory we will always remember with pride and joy.
Last Mother's Day 2008 my daughter Mia and I joined the Mother and Daughter Look-a-like Contest.
I was hesitant at first but I don't want my children to think that the mom who has been encouraging them to believe in themselves is actually not confident enough to take the challenge.
So, we both made a promise to each other: to enjoy the moment no matter what, win or lose, we would have fun.
I told my daughter, what better contest could there be where I wouldn't only be there to encourage her but instead I would be joining her the whole time.
We truly did enjoy the night. The contest in itself was a memorable experience shared with my daughter. As we were declared the Winner, it was a very great feeling achieving something together.
After the Mother and Daughter Look-and-Do Alike Contest was the Father and Child Talent competition. This was the highlight of the Father's Day celebration.
Seeing the enthusiasm of my second child Tobi overcoming his shyness and yearning for his turn to also be a part of an SM contest like his siblings made my husband Robert signed in for the competition.
It was a very challenging contest showcasing different impressive talents of Kagay-anons. However, when my husband and son danced, they moved so fluidly together, performing perfectly as a pair, enjoying every moment, gaining the cheers of the crowd...and winning the competition!
That completed our victory! It was truly amazing to think that it wasn't just a simple victory that night: it made everyone in the family an SM winner. Unbelievable...but true.
SM has become a very special part in our lives. It is more than just a mall to us, it is a place where unforgettable memories are made, overwhelming happiness is experienced and opportunities are gained.
All these, I know, will forever be treasured in our hearts.

calyx2008 August 18th, 2008, 05:14 AM Hanjin will be back in Sept
The Hanjin shipbuilding project in Tagoloan and Villanueve, Misamis oriental will be back in September, according to Phividec Administrator Nimfa A. Albania.
Albania said that she has been meeting with the President of Hanjin-Mindanao every week and the company is just waiting for the final relocation of the 800, more or less, that needs to be relocated.
“They are now building the school in the relocation site,” she said.
Another proof of the return of Hanjin is the fact that they have continued the training of workers and have even increased the number of trainees that they have hired.
“They have hired additional trainees in the local areas and will continue to hire new ones in the days to come,” she added.
According to Albania those who have finished their training re now in Subic working for the shipbuilding facilities of the company there.
The company was reported to have pulled out of their shipbuilding project in the Phividec area sometime last June after an alleged misunderstanding with some officials. This was threshed out by the President when she came to visit the city.
calyx2008 August 18th, 2008, 05:15 AM Hanjin will be back/The Mindanao Container Port
I just received word that Hanjin will be back next month. This was told to us by Nimfa Along Albania, the Administrator of Phividec Industrial Authority (PIA).
She said that she has been having weekly meetings with the President of Hanjin Mindanao and what is really delaying their comeback is the relocation of the 800 or so families in the area.
This, she said will be completed by the middle of September. Also, the construction of the school in the relocation site is going on.
She also reported that Hanjin has even increased the number of trainees that are enrolled in their training center. Those who have finished their training are now working in Subic and they will be back as soon as the Tagoloan/Villanueve operations will start.
This, indeed, is good news!
Amidst all the reports we receive on the Mindanao crisis brought about by MOA-AD with the MILF something good still seeps through and it simply changes the horizon.
I got all these info in an interview with Ms. Albania during the turnover ceremonies of the operations of the Phividec Container Port. The port has been operated by the Mindanao International Container Services, Inc. a company owned by ICSTI. Sounds familiar?
It is!
ICSTI is the company that operated the South Harbor, the International Port of Manila, and is owned by Enrique Razon, whose named has been mentioned in the ZTE controversy and reportedly a very close ally and friend of the first couple.
But, before minds go wild, the MICTSI won the bidding of the port fair and square in a long and very transparent process. Hey came up with the best deal and the best plan for the port.
Again, this was another piece of good news.
This means that both importers and exporters can now be assured of a first class handling of their cargoes. This was assured by Jose Manuel de Jesus who has assumed the position of General Manager of MICTSI.
Not only that, since they started operating the port in June 26, 2008, they have already attained 10% over their projected volume.
They believe that with the present projected capacity of the port of 270T TEU (the number of containers) they can increase this further to the level of 600 to 700T which he thinks can easily be attained with a minimal additional investment.
Isn’t this nice to hear?
One of the things we got from the turnover ceremonies was the narration of former PIA Administrator Gabby Evangelista on how he worked to get the construction of the port approved and funded. He said that for him it was a dream.
He encountered a lot of objections from both government and the private sector but, in the end, they were able to convince everyone, including NED and the cabinet, the benefits of the project.
Today the Mindanao Container Port is one of the most modern ports not just in the country but also throughout the world. This is something within our midst, just around the corner, and makes you feel proud that you are from the area.
My congratulations to Gabby, to Nimfa and to all the Phividec staff!

Media and Fiesta
Looking over past articles on fiesta has been a lesson on the life of St. Augustine. Once fooled by the world, he found a meaningful life in Christ.
It has also been a blessing to realize one media outlet is two years old this month.
The New J, or Radio J, 103.3 FM has been on the air broadcasting all Christian music all day long. It is the only station in the city to do so. God had blessed tremendously.
Young people can listen to rock, rap, reggae, acoustic and even some alternative music and know that all the lyrics are good. Older people can listen to worship, traditional and classical music. Again, only one station in the city plays classical music. It may only be a few hours on Sunday, but it’s a start.
The miracle of programming allows different genres to attract different audiences at different times. The vast majority of the time anyone with an interest in music will be blessed. Of course some teens might not be thrilled with the traditional music. Some older people might not also be too blessed with Friday and Saturday nights.
Never has a day gone by when there’s not a text praising and thanking God for an all-Christian station. Non-denominational studies at the station during the week compliment spiritual growth.
Prayer is needed for such blessings to continue. God has used a small staff and very little equipment to go a long, long way! He has promised His Word will never return void, (Isaiah 55:11), and, it hasn’t!
How does St. Augustine fit into Christian Hit Radio? Augustine was once captured by the wares of the world. He fell into believing that seeking fun and infidelity would be fulfilling.
So many teens today think loud and senseless music is fun. It provides the same empty promises the world provides through drink and drugs.
Drugs and drinking are supposed to make people relax and feel good. They actually contort the mind into delusional thinking.
Worldly music does the same. Senseless lyrics attempt to convince teens life itself is senseless. Many worldly songs speak of the ‘beauty’ of suicide. Obviously Satan is the author of such. The sooner he can trick people into an eternity of servitude to himself, the better for him.
St. Augustine was so beguiled by the world. Yet, he was able to take tools from our earthly sphere and use them to gain disciples for Christ. He was an accomplished academic and debater. His intelligence and reasoning won many-a-follower.
In the same way today’s Christian music captures the attention of the teen with fun, challenging and exciting music.
God is the Author of music. God is the Author of intelligence. Christian music, flowing from the giftedness of committed Christians surprises many teens who are looking for fun—they find a challenge!
The best way to celebrate fiesta is by imitating our patron saint. He was a man who once entangled by the world found real meaning in Christ. Our youth deserve the same. Listening to Christian music is a step in that direction.

dark_knight_detectve August 18th, 2008, 02:33 PM Nescafe converts waste into energy (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080817105&type=2)
Monday, August 18, 2008
Spent coffee grounds are used to generate energy in the Cagayan de Oro factory of leading coffee brand Nescafe.
The Nestle Cagayan de Oro Factory’s Atmospheric Fluidized Bed Boiler (AFBB) is a state-of-the-art technology that recycles and burns 100 percent spent coffee grounds of bunker fuel a day, which the factory uses for its operations. Spent coffee grounds are the remains of ground roasted coffee after their liquor has been extracted.
“Because less oil are burned to generate steam, the AFBB greatly helps reduce environmental pollution and save energy costs,” says Ed Legasto, Senior Vice President of Nestle Philippines, Inc (NPI) and factory manager of the Cagayan de Oro factory.
He furthers that by using biomass as a substitute for bunker fuel, “we prevent the adverse air emission pollution such as Sulfur Dioxide (Sox) and Nitrogen Oxide (NOx), which is a natural by-product of combustion of fossil fuels.”
“And with the installation of a very efficient pollution control device called the Electrostatic Precipitator (EP), the whole AFBB system complies with Clean Air Act or RA 8749,” Legasto says.
The process of recycling spent coffee grounds begins after the green coffee beans are roasted. The ground-roasted coffee is extracted with hot water inside the percolation batteries or extraction cells to produce the coffee extract.
While the coffee extract undergoes spray-drying to produce Nestle’s best-selling coffee, the spent coffee grounds are sent to the disposal system to be used as fuel. The heat produced from this process is then used to produce the steam requirements of the Cagayan de Oro Factory.
Legasto says that the AFBB is not the first environment-friendly technology that Nestle has utilized.
“As early as 1994, the factory had been using the concept of biomass disposal using the Lurgi Waste Heat Boiler System,” reveals Legasto. “It uses coffee grounds, by-products after extracting coffee liquor from roasted coffee beans, as a fuel to generate steam.”
He adds that the AFBB has a higher capacity that can handle not only solid biomass from coffee processes but also colored water concentrate.
Nestle has also implemented programs designed to create environmental awareness.
For example, its Cagayan de Oro Factory launched a Solid Waster Management Program designed to establish proper garbage segregation and disposal in Purok 11 of Barangay Tablon, where the factory is located.
The program involves the creation of a communal eco garden and eco-center, selling of recyclable materials from segregated household wastes, and the manufacture of organic fertilizers from the biodegradable wastes. Community residents are oriented about the program and are involved in the community clean-up drive.

boju2 August 19th, 2008, 04:17 AM Rufus: Special Elections can still go on despite Nograles as (http://www.kagay-an.com/articles.php?art_id=1965&sec_id=4&cat_id=14)
By Mike Baños
House Speaker Prospero Nograles decision to serve as caretaker of the 1st Congressional District of Misamis Oriental is not final nor binding, and special elections can still be held to elect a successor to the late Danilo Lagbas.
"We thank the Speaker for his kindness in volunteering his services to serve as caretaker of the 1st District," said Rep. Rufus Rodriguez (2nd District, Cagayan de Oro). "However, this does not automatically mean special elections will no longer be held to elect a successor to replace the late Danny Lagbas."
Jericho Nograles, son and chief of staff of House Speaker Prospero Nograles, announced Friday his father would serve as the 'caretaker' of Misamis Oriental's 1st District until 2010 and there is no longer a vacancy for said post.
Rodriguez said while the practice of being a "caretaker" for a deceased member of the Lower House is an accepted practice among legislators, it actually has no legal basis and is only practiced to allow the orphaned district to continue receiving its share of the Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) better known as the "pork barrel".
However, Rodriguez said a duly elected representative for the district can more actively source funds for his constituents aside from the PDAF like what he has been doing for Cagayan de Oro's 2nd District with additional funds coming in from the Phil. Amusement & Gaming Corp. (Pagcor), Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) and others.
"There is an urgent need to fill the vacancy in Misamis Oriental's 1st District so I would continue to pursue my resolution seeking a certification of vacancy from the House and calling for a special election in the 1st District," he added.
As it is, Rodriguez said Nograles is already overburdened with serving as a House Speaker and cannot be humanely expected to allot additional time and effort serving as the caretaker for the province's 1st District.
Rodriguez filed a resolution on the first day of the current Congress last July 28 citing the Constitution which specifies the calling of a special election "in case of a vacancy in the Senate or House of Representatives" and Republic Act 6645 which mandates the Commission on Elections to hold a special election the moment it receives a resolution from either house of Congress which certifies to such a vacancy.

Baka gusto lang ni Nograles ang pork.... hehehe

GearX August 19th, 2008, 05:43 AM 13 Contingents To Clash In “Higaonon Dance Festival 2008” (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
A total of 13 contingents from Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental will clash on August 26, 2008 in a narrative dance competition dubbed as the “Higaonon Dance Festival 2008” with a whopping P550,000 in cash prize at stake.
“The “Higaonon Dance Festival 2008” is a street parade and dance showdown depicting the indigenous tradition of the Higaonons, an indigenous tribe in Mindanao,” committee chairperson Eileen San Juan said.
“Grand prize winner will receive a cash prize of P200,000 plus trophy while the first runner-up and second runner-up will get P150,000 and P100,000, respectively plus trophies. Non-winning contingents will also receive P10,000 each as consolation prizes,” San Juan added.
The street parade starts at 8:00 o’clock in the morning and ends at the showdown venue. Parade assembly venue, parade route and showdown venue will be announced by the organizers later.
Along the parade route, three judges’ will be deployed in various stations where contingents can perform for a maximum of three (3) minutes using a unified Higaonon musical beat and melodies that serve as the main tune to be played all throughout the street dancing.
Costumes must be nearest to the original Higaonon traditional garb with the dominant color of red, in combination with gold, black and white.
The street dancing competition accounts 50% in judging the top winners while the remaining 50% will be based on the contingents’ performance during the final showdown competition.
Participating contingents from Cagayan de Oro include barangays Kauswagan, Barangay 20, Consolacion, Barangay 35, Barangay 31, Barangay 30, Barangay 1, Bayanga, and Lapasan, while participating groups from Misamis Oriental are the municipalities of Jasaan and Balingasag and St. Mary’s Academy in Gingoog City.
The “Higaonon Dance Festival 2008” is one of the five core events featured in the Kagay-an Festival 2008, a signature festival of the city’s fiesta on August 28 which is spearheaded and organized by the Promote CdeO Foundation, Inc. under president Ruben Vegafria.
Other major events include the “2nd Golden Float Parade Competition” on August 27; “Lambagohan”- the famous fluvial parade at the Cagayan de Oro River on August 28; “Kahimunan Mindanao 2008”- a trade fair and exhibit of Mindanao’s best products on August 22-25 and the “Ms. Kagay-an 2008” beauty pageant. The NBTC D-League (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)
Last August 13, 2008, Coach Eric Altamirano of the National Basketball Training Center was here to conduct the Coaches’ Meeting and Training for the up-coming Development League.
The Meeting for the Coaches and the Team Owners was hosted by the Secretary to the City Mayor, Jigs Jaraula who is also the BAP-SBP City Director.
The Prime Objective of this Developmental League or the D-League is to create a learning environment for players to enhance both the individual and team skills of a player. The D-League is also focused on skills development and not on winning.
***
The D-League is for players 16 years old and below and to qualify for this league you have to be the best of the best.
It is not for the beginners of basketball but for those who we can call the “elite” in the city.
***
So the D-League will be running in a “pocket tournament” type just like the Liga Pilipinas with Cagayan de Oro and Iligan clustered together. In our cluster, there are 4 teams, 2 for Iligan, 1 for Cagayan de Oro and 1 for Misamis Oriental. This is set to start in November.
After the City-Based Tournament, the top two teams will then face the top two teams of the Davao-GenSan cluster and the winner will then represent the Mindanao Cluster.
The Winners of the NCR, Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao will then go to the National Championships in Manila in May 2009.
***
The D-League can serve as a gate way for players and coaches to move to a higher level of competition. From the D-League, they have chances to be discovered for the UAAP or the NCAA, the National Teams, the PBL, Liga Pilipinas and hopefully the PBA.
***
On the Coaching Aspect, Coach Eric was so strict about who will be the coaches in this D-League.
Though the Team Owners can pick their Coaches, they will not be able to coach without the approval of Coach Eric.
“We want Coaches who can teach and not just coach. It’s not the winning that counts in the D-League but it’s all about teaching the players and developing their skills,” He explained.
With this in mind, he then conducted a Coaches’ Training at the Xavier University Main Covered Courts and not only did he teach the Coaches, he asked each one to do the drills also.
At the end of the session, Coaches were dripping wet especially the Coaches from Iligan who didn’t expect that they will be doing the drills themselves.

Liga Pilipinas
The Misamis Oriental Meteors were able to pull a win over the Ilocos Sur Bravehearts to earn them a slot in the quarterfinals against the Pagadian Explorers.
Enjoying a twice to beat advantage, the Meteors came from behind led by Egay Echavez, Aaron Aban and Alano Caputolan in a third quarter blitz.
The best of 5 series starts today, (August 18) in Pagadian where games 1 and 2 will be played. Game 3 will be at the Xavier University Gym on August 25 and if necessary Game 4 will also be at XU on August 26. If ever there will be a game 5, it will be held in Pagadian because the Explorers have a better record thus the home court advantage.

The Miss Kayag-an 2007 Court composed of Ms. Diana Bagonoc, Miss Kagay-an Tourism ’07, and her Court, Dianne Galenzoga, Miss Kagay-an Tourism 1st Runner Up, Natasha Mills, Miss Kagay-an Tourism, 2nd Runner Up, and Kathleen Marie Tabada, Miss Kagay-an Tourism, 3rd Runner Up, launched their social-civic project, “Because we CARE” where they gathered goods most needed by the Boys Town Residents at Bgy. Lumbia, CDO. The center has about fifty-four boys who have no known family ties or are abandoned.
Mrs. Corazon Buntag, Center Head, expressed her gratitude to the Beauties’ calling the public’s attention to the plight of the boys-in-residence. The ladies gave out soap, toothbrush, slippers, shirts, blankets, school supplies, toys and other items, which most of us take for granted, but were well appreciated by the Boys.
Not only were the boys given gifts and treats, the 2007 Court have also agreed with Bgy. Cpt. William Valencia, the Bgy. Lumbia Council, Pueblo de Oro Golf & Country Club’s Mark Gaston, Pueblo de Oro Development Corp., to assist the Center in providing livelihood projects that would benefit the boys. This will be done to promote additional means for them to augment their food and monetary needs while developing the technical skills and sense of social responsibility.
The highlight of the morning was the surprise visit of Congressman Rufus Rodriguez of the 2nd District of Cagayan de Oro, who provided lunch for the boys and their visitors.
Moreover, upon seeing the living conditions the children live in, Congressman Rodriguez pledged One Million Pesos for the rehabilitation of the Center and positioning Boys Town as an agricultural livelihood center.
The event was in celebration of the boys in the center. As Ms. Kagay-an Tourism 2007 Diana Bagonoc aptly expressed to the boys, “We are here because of you, and we have been touched by you. It is also through you that we have come to realize that many people are also very much willing to help. We are here BECAUSE WE CARE!”

Even after their withdrawal last April this year, Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp. (HHIC) is still moving to obtain from the local environmental bureaus all the environmental permits it needs for the construction of their $2 billion shipyard facility at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-10) Regional Director Maximo Dichoso, Jr. and the Department of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) Juanito Manzano, Jr. recently disclosed that Hanjin has sent representatives to their respective offices to request for more information on what HHIC needs to sdubmit to obtain all the permits.
Also, they told reporters that HHIC even recently submitted its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) which is needed for the issuance of the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) for their shipyard facility at Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
Manzano said Hanjin even has the ECC needed for the construction of its administration building training hall and peripheral fence to be located at Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental.
"All that is needed is the ECC for their shipyard at Phividec (Industrial Estate) in Villanueva," he said in a press conference at Grabnd Caprice Restaurant.
Manzano said he ahs also received requests for information and technical assistance for the quarrying of some other local rivers to fulfill the material construction needs of the shipyard.
He explained that the Tagoloan River, the closest river to the shipyard location, cannot fulfill all the requirement needs for the construction of Hanjin's $2 billion shipyard in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
"So if you consider all of these developments, then there is a strong possibility that Hanjin will indeed come back," he said.

Local personal care product maker Ever Bilena Cosmetics, Inc. is eyeing P1 billion in sales next year, with overall growth largely boosted by its direct selling operations here and abroad.
Company Chairman Dioceldo S. Sy said he was looking at ending this year with about P700-800 million in sales, which as much as a third higher than last year’s figure.
"We are doing good with our direct selling business. In fact, it’s our main growth driver now," he said in an interview.
Ever Bilena launched its direct selling operations in the second quarter of last year and expanded to Macau, Hong Kong and Singapore early this year. To date, the company has 50,000 sellers and 500 dealers. Mr. Sy said he wanted to have at least 20 distribution centers nationwide by next month.
Avon Philippines and Fuller Life Direct Selling, Inc., formerly Sara Lee, are among the largest direct selling cosmetic firms here.
"We are also looking at having 100 to 200 distribution centers in the next three to five years. Business is particularly strong in rural areas like Antique, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Samar. We discovered that there’s buying power in the countryside. The market remains untapped," he said.
The company might also revive its manufacturing plant in the Philippines, which was shut down in 2004, to support the growing business.
"Once we have 100 to 200 distribution centers, we may consider reviving the plant. We can produce high-quality products here," Mr. Sy said. Ever Bilena outsources almost its entire production to China. It offers cosmetic and personal care products sold in local department stores and major retail outlets.
In 2005, it launched its first product for the body care segment and skin care line, which carries more sophisticated cosmetic and skin care products. It likewise expanded its color cosmetic line to cater to teenagers.
Mr. Sy said the company might also venture to other products such as clothing and bags to strengthen Ever Bilena’s hold on the direct selling business.

STATE-owned Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) on Tuesday said some of President Arroyo’s projects on creating and rehabilitating ports across the country are “almost completed” even before their target dates.
The PPA said the following projects are expected to be completely done before 2008 ends:
§ Construction of wharf, backup area, drainage system and lighting system at the General Santos Port;
§ Construction of rock causeway, backup area, roll-on, roll-off (Roro) ramp and lighting system at the Cawayan Port in Masbate;
§ Construction of platform, rock causeway and lighting system at the Sibunag Port;
§ Widening of the wharf and construction of backup area, drainage system and lighting system at the Cagayan de Oro Port;
§ Building of passenger terminal and rehabilitation of Roro ramp, backup area, rock causeway and lighting system at the Naval or Maripipi Port in Biliran;
§ Construction of wharf, backup area, drainage system and lighting system at the Nasipit Port in Batangas;
§ Extension of wharf and Roro ramp and construction of backup area, drainage system and lighting system at the Surigao Port; and
§ Extension of wharf, backup area, drainage system and lighting system at the Zamboanga Port.
Oscar Sevilla, general manager of the PPA, said these ports—together with others that were previously built and rehabilitated—would not only serve as harbingers of economic growth to the country but also changes in the political landscape and empowerment to local governments.
This year alone, three developments have already been completed.
These include the construction of a passenger terminal building at Dingalan Port in Aurora, reclamation of backup area for Limasawa Port in Southern Leyte and extension of Roro ramp at Balbagon Port in Camiguin.
These projects, which the President disclosed at her sixth State of the Nation Address (Sona), are aligned with her vision of propelling the country to First-World status.
Sevilla said the transformation of ports would increase productivity, promote peace and order and drive a synergy of committed citizens at the grassroots that would “propel our nation to world-class status by 2020.”
“President [Arroyo] intends to promote investments, create jobs and build prosperity while empowering the people to take their future in their own hands,” said Sevilla.
In her sixth Sona, the President unveiled several infrastructure projects that were identified by the local executives as vital to her vision of having “super regions.”
Sevilla added the government’s new strategy in planning and economic development that groups the country’s 16 regions into five super regions would spur benefits and synergy among the regions that were grouped according to their natural competitive advantage.

Foreign investors are not affected by the brewing tension between government forces and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
“There is no immediate effect,” Robert Sears, executive director of the American Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (Amcham) said in an interview.
According to Sears, foreign businessmen will continue to infuse money in the country especially since the Board of Investments (BOI) are improving services they give to existing and potential investors.
“We are happy with what the government is doing and we are looking forward to a continuing partnership between the foreign chambers and the government,” Sears said.
“We are confident that the government can handle the situation,” he added.
BOI managing head Elmer Hernandez said the attack in Lanao del Norte and nearby provinces is “not a problem.”
“Investments will continue to pour in even if there is civil unrest in the south,” Hernandez told The STAR in an interview.
According to Hernandez, the tension will only have an effect if it continues for a long time.
“We are not alone in this, other countries are also dealing with similar situations,” Hernandez pointed out, citing Thailand and Malaysia as examples.
He said foreigners usually factor in these kinds of things when they invest in a particular country.
“I don’t think we should be concerned just yet,” Hernandez said. “Although of course we are all hoping for the quick resolution of the matter.”
In fact, Hernandez said a big investor in Mindanao Korean firm Hanjin Heavy Industries Corp. will push through with its expansion plans.
Hernandez confirmed that the investment would continue, “I was talking to them a month ago and they told me that the project was a go,” he said.
Disagreements over an environmental permit have delayed the construction of a $2-billion shipyard in the southern Philippines.
The shipyard is being built on a 442-ha lot inside the Phividec Industrial Estate and is expected to be completed in 2017. It will have a capacity of 830,000 tons per year when completed, generating 45,000 new jobs.

Business as usual for tourism
As for the tourism industry, it’s business as usual as it remains unhampered by the prevailing peace and order problem in the south, said Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano yesterday.
Durano assured tourists that the conflict is isolated and has not affected the tourism industry.
“The country’s top destinations such as Manila, Boracay, Palawan, Davao, Bohol and Cebu remain safe for both international and local guests,” he stressed.
Durano noted that the military and police are on top of the Mindanao situation.
“Our regional offices keep in close coordination with foreign tourists in their areas and the private sectors have likewise informed us that there are no cancellations on their packaged tours.”
Durano also said commercial activities and public services even in areas surrounding the provinces of Lanao continue regular operations at this time.
“Operations of businesses including establishments in the tourism industry such as transportation services, hotels, resorts and restaurants continue to be normal,” he said.

Sundayag Mindanao opens Friday (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/08/21/bus/sundayag.mindanao.opens.friday.html)
By Annabelle L. Ricalde
THE annual Sundayag sa Amihanang Mindanao, the 8th agro-industry and livestock exposition of Northern Mindanao, is set to take place starting Friday until August 30, 2008 at the Limketkai Grounds, Cagayan de Oro City.
The event is a unified effort of the Chamber of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food Industries of Northern Mindanao (Caffinormin) and Department of Agriculture (DA)-Northern Mindanao.
It is supported by the Misamis Oriental Goat and Sheep Raisers Association, Large Animal Raisers Association-Mindanao and some government agencies that are partners in the agricultural sector.
DA's regional executive director Lealyn Ramos said that Sundayag aims to promote products and services from the agriculture, livestock, industry, and tourism sectors.
"We're bringing in region's best products for the buyers and Sundayag is the best venue and opportunity for business relationships with entrepreneurs and consumers in Northern Mindanao," Ramos said in a press conference Wednesday.
Sundayag 2008 will also be participated by various livestock and poultry associations, local government units (LGUs) and private farms such as; the Misamis Oriental Goat and Sheep Raisers Association; Large Animal Raisers Association-Mindanao, Northern Mindanao Federation of Dairy Cooperatives, Normin Hog, Livestock Genetic Improvement Foundation, Inc., Philippine Veterinary Med. Association-NM Chapter, Catanico Horsemen Association, Philippine-Pig International Corporation, Manti-anak Nature Park & JP Farms, Cagayan de Oro Kennel Club, City Veterinary Office (CVO) and the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO).
On his part, George Yacapin, Caffinormin representative, emphasized that Sundayag will open up the scarcity problem in the market and its needs.
"Part of it we create markets and encourage other farmers to make good of their products," Yacapin said.
Part of the event is the holding of various fora and seminars like large animal raisers forum; hog raisers forum, NM-Federation of Dairy Cooperative forum; technology seminar for livestock and corn husk training, and Misamis Oriental goat and sheep forum/demo on banana processing.
Other activities will be the fun match dog show, Sundayag night, horseback riding and the daily viewing and sale of fancy, exotic and farm animals.
With this, Dr. Alfonso Ramosa, provincial veterinarian Officer, is inviting all farmers in the region to attend the different fora on livestock.

REIGNING national Shell kiddies champion Lennon Hart Salgados will lead Cagayan de Oro's quest for glory in the Queen City of the South.
The 14-year-old Salgados will try to sustain his winning ways in the regional Cebu Shell chess qualifier that he managed to hurdle for the last three consecutive years.
Along with Corpus Christi compatriots Christian Mario Pabillore, the Ibaoc siblings (Keith, Tristan, Kennard) and newly-minted Cosaa high school girls champion Carol Chua of Mary Child School, the CDO bets leave tomorrow morning aboard a Super Ferry boat.
"First time nako sa junior category (20-under) but I don't feel any pressure," said Salgados, who consistently won the gold medal during the inter-province championship in Tandag, Surigao del Sur.
He also bagged the gold during the recent Patag tourney in Cagayan de Oro.
The Shell National Youth Active Chess Championship kicks off its Visayan swing on August 23-24 with the staging of the Cebu qualifier, the fifth leg of an eight-stage series, at SM City Cebu.
"The weather condition right now here in Cebu is just fair. So, I don't think typhoon-related disturbances will affect our tournament schedules in the Visayas region," National Shell chess coordinator Alex Dinoy told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro via text messaging.
With the maximum roster of 500 already filled up as early as two weeks ago, the chase for the top three spots in the Kiddies and Juniors division -- and berths in the national finals -- are expected to be tight in the Central Visayas eliminations.
Twenty four players -- 12 each in the 14-under and 20-under classes -- have clinched spots in the grand finals slated on November 8-9 at SM Megamall with 24 more to be culled from the last four legs of the nationwide talent-search sponsored by Pilipinas Shell.
From Cebu, the tournament, which has produced the likes of Grand Masters Wesley So and Mark Paragua, will go to Iloilo for the Western Visayas leg on August 30-31 at SM City Iloilo before it hops to Mindanao for the penultimate leg on September 13-14 at SM City Davao.
The circuit, sanctioned by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines and backed by Shell Fuels, Shellane, Shell Helix, Shell Rimula, Shell Advance and McDonald's, in cooperation with SM Supermalls, LCC Mall -- Naga, Brickstone Mall -- Tuguegarao City and Western Mindanao State University, winds up in Zamboanga on September 27-28 at the Western Mindanao State University gym.

The Economy
Cagayan de Oro abuzz with economic activity despite worries
CAGAYAN DE ORO — Despite high inflation compounded further by security threats in Northern Mindanao after the Moro rebel attacks in nearby Lanao provinces, expectations on this city’s near-term economic prospects remain high.
Local officials and residents interviewed cited indicators such as emerging retail complexes and hotels, as well as a new airport, that will drive the city’s economic growth in near to medium terms.
Elsie A. Limosnero, senior trade and industry specialist of the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry, said
Hopeful signs the city’s service sector is expanding, noting high growth observed in retail trade.
If new businesses come to the city, the need for housing will follow, she said, citing plans of Ayala Corp. and Korean firm I. F. Koresco Corp. in this city.
Ayala opened an upscale subdivision here a year ago and the latest buzz is that the Makati-based developer is considering a new commercial complex on a site owned by Davao’s Floirendo family in front of Gaisano shopping complex here.
The Ayalas and the Floirendos are partners in an ongoing Ayala mixed-use development in Davao that will be completed in 2012.
Koresco, meanwhile, has announced the construction of a $20-million 100-room casino-hotel in this city within the year. In addition, Limketkai Sons, Inc. is erecting a 250-room, 21-storey hotel, the tallest structure in Mindanao, near its shopping complex at this city’s Lapasan district. Both projects are hinged on a surge in tourism when the region’s international-class airport at nearby Laguindingan town is completed two years from now.
The city also has its share of the business process outsourcing boom, hosting four major call centers, namely: Link2Support, Arriba Telecontact, Inc., Tradetel Corp., and Concentrix. Smaller facilities, with seats below 50 are also operating here.
Jojie Ann O. Dolotina, a recruitment associate for contact center firm Concentrix, said recent rebel attacks in Central Mindanao will not hinder this city’s growth in the near term.
Sales are good
The city’s retail sector is still thriving, shop owners interviewed early this week noted.
A spokesman for Samsung’s consumer electronics shop at the Limketkai Center claims its Cagayan de Oro store is a leader among Samsung shops in the regions in terms of sales of mobile phones and LCD television sets. :applause:
Jelarmee Villareal, store manager of Toy Kingdom at the SM City Cagayan de Oro Shopping Mall, also claimed sales have been good these past months.
At the city’s Friday night tiangge in Divisoria district, the crowd has become bigger compared with last year’s.
A Maranao trader, however, noted the merchandise sold now, comprising mostly of ukay-ukay or used clothes and shoes, are cheaper compared with those available in previous years. "There are more buyers now probably because we’re selling our products cheap," she said.
While the general sentiment was that the recent attacks of the MILF in nearby Lanao del Norte province will have an impact on the local economy, traders — mostly Maranaos, a major Moro tribe — would rather forget those incidents.
For years, Moro traders have dominated sidewalk trade at this city’s Divisoria district selling items from used clothes and shoes, to cellular phone accessories and pirated video discs.
Reflecting what could be a preference of many here to disassociate this city’s prospects from the threat of a rebel attack, the local Trade department’s Mr. Limosnero said: "It is a very sensitive issueleave it as it is. Our role is only promotion."
But still worried
Still, Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno told reporters yesterday that the ongoing conflict could threaten the region’s growth prospects. "I could not figure out how Northern Mindanao and the rest of the island could recover from such a setback, politically and economically," he said.
He described the attacks of the MILF in the towns of Kauswagan, Kolambogan and Linamon towns in Lanao del Norte as a "serious blow" that the entire Mindanao will suffer from, including in terms of a sullied image in the eyes of prospective investors from abroad and from other regions.
The governor emphasized that in recent years, Northern Mindanao has been registering the fastest growth rate among regions on the island. Citing the 2005-2006 growth figures of the National Statistical Coordination Board, Northern Mindanao posted the highest growth rate in five years at 6.8%; followed by Central Mindanao, 6.7%; Caraga Region, 4.9%; Southern Mindanao, 4.4%; Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, 4.1%; and Western Mindanao at 2.1%. — Penny Lyn P. The Last Grand Fiesta Procession (http://sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/08/22/feat/the.last.grand.fiesta.procession.html)
By Paulita Roa
Past speaks
THE parish priest of San Agustin Church of Cagayan de Misamis (the city's old name) was described by locals as a Katsilang prayle Recoletano or a Spanish Recollect friar whose full name was Angel Contreras de Belaza de los Dolores.
It was Pari (priest) Angel Belaza who changed the wooden floors of the church into tiles and painted its interiors.
For the coming feast day of the town's patron saint, San Agustin, he ordered a new statue of the saint from a sculptor in Manila.
Unfortunately the name of this artist was not mentioned by the writer who is simply known as Kagay-anon, in his article entitled San Agustin, Patron Ning Kagay-an on the August 21, 1948 issue of Ang Katarungan, the city's and Mindanao's oldest local newspaper.
The new statue of San Agustin was going to be blessed outside the church on the western portion of what is known today as the Divisoria area.
This could be on the present site of the Community Amphitheater.
Pari Angel commissioned a local artist who was popularly known as Iyo Kando to design a templete or temple with four big posts whose top was covered with clouds to make it looked ethereal.
Finally, on August 27, 1897 at 7:30 in the morning, a big procession headed by Pari Angel came out of the San Agustin church and wound its way to the templete.
The new statue was placed in a float or carrosa that was shaped like a huge boat.
A large crowd was already waiting around the templete for the ceremonies to begin.
As the carrosa stopped in front of the templete, an all male choir composed of students from the school of Nicolas Capistrano, the Colegio de 2 a Ensenanza, sang a beautiful hymn in Spanish whose melody was composed by Maestro Pedro Velez.
A stanza from the hymn was all that Kagay-anon could remember and it went like this:
'Cante el mundo mil himnos de gloria
Desde el uno hasta el otro confin
Bendeciendo la grata memoria:
Del eximio Doctor Agustin."
Kagay-anon translated this to Bisayan as thus:
"Mag-awit ang kalibutan sa libo ka
dalayig sa himaya
Sukad sa pikas hangtud sa luyong tumoy,
Nagapalangin sa iyang matamisong handumanan
Sa bantugang Doctor Agustin."
Some members of the choir were Misael and Uldarico Chaves, Maximo and Vicente Saquin, Dionisio Abas, Miguel Daang, Isabelo Abellanosa, Manuel Corrales Jr., Jose Corrales, Bernardo Neri and Vicente Neri San Jose.
While the choir was singing, a huge globe slowly descended from the templete's clouds and stopped directly above the head of the new statue. The globe gradually opened and released a shower of fresh flowers and four white doves that had multi-colored ribbons tied on their feet.
Isidro Vamenta, Ramon Neri, Jose Montes and Alfredo Roa, all students of Capistrano's school, stood onstage in the templete.
Each delivered a short talk in Spanish or alocucion. After the alucuciones, the blessing ceremonies for the new statue of San Agustin followed.
As Pari Angel led the procession back to the San Agustin Church, the male choir members and the four speakers rode on the carrosa as honor guards of the newly blessed statue.
The road leading to the church was lined with versos, a milder version of the firecracker that made a lot of popping sounds while the church bells were doing a rapiki or a continuous and fast pealing of the bells that could be heard for miles around.
There was another choir that sang during the Misa Diyakono and this was composed by the young men and women who came from prominent families of Cagayan de Misamis.
They were accompanied by a full orchestra under the baton of Maestro Pedro Velez.
The following day, the new statue of San Agustin was enshrined at the altar mayor or main altar of the church while the older statue of the patron saint that was acquired in 1800 was moved outside and placed on a niche right above the main door of the church.
The town and church fiesta celebrations that were celebrated more than a hundred years ago clearly showed that the Kagay-anons in 1897 and even earlier, already achieved a high level of culture and sophistication that was comparable to other cities like Cebu, Iloilo and even Manila.
Cagayan de Misamis was truly the center of culture and the arts of Northern Mindanao.

by Zita M. Abellare
Cagayan de Oro City (21 August) -- OTOP (One-Town, One-Product) products and delicacies from Camiguin will be featured in the upcoming Kagay-an Festival Trade Fair at the Atrium of the Limketkai Center in Cagayan de Oro City on August 22-25.
Organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), in partnership with the Promote CDO Foundation, Inc., Advocate of Philippine Fair Trade, Inc. (APFTI) and the Philippine Exporters Confederation, Inc.-10A (Philexport 10A), this grand exhibit, dubbed as "Kahimunan Mindanao 2008 Mindanao Island Fair," is a core event of the Kagay-an Festival celebration in the whole month of August.
Up for exhibit and sale at the Camiguin Booth are the island-province's abaca by-products, virgin coconut oil, world-class coiled nito baskets and jars and the popular delicacies such as the pastel of Vjandep Bakeshop, Maestrado Tablea, Soling's Piniato and Ampaw, Fresh from the Farm and Nutricam calamansi concentrate, among others.
The Mindanao-wide "Kahimunan" will showcase the quality products and services of the OTOP and other small-and-medium entrepreneurs in the six regions of Mindanao.
Featured sectors include arts and crafts, fashion accessories, food, furniture, gifts and house wares, organic and natural products in the island.
The fair will also feature daily regional presentations, technical sessions, cultural show and variety shows and market matching activities.
Formal opening of this event will be on August 22, 2:00 p.m.
Top program
OTOP-Philippines is a priority program of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo designed to promote entrepreneurship and create jobs.
Specifically, it supports micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to manufacture, offer and market distinctive products and services using indigenous raw materials and local skills and talents.
Under this program, city and municipal government executives take the lead in identifying, developing, and promoting a specific product or service, which has a competitive advantage.
Overall, OTOP offers a comprehensive package through a convergence of services from local government units, national government agencies, and the private sector.
This package includes business counseling, skills and entrepreneurial training, product design and development, appropriate technologies, and marketing.
The program targets MSMEs with an asset of not more than P100 million.
The LGUs identify the specific product or service and make available all forms of assistance, while the DTI advocates the program's ideals and provides the necessary support for the LGUs in the implementation, along with the Department of Agriculture, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Science and Technology, Department of Tourism, and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority.
In Camiguin, OTOP products being promoted are the virgin coconut oil/integrated coconut processing in Mambajao, abaca and by-products in Catarman and Sagay, bamboocraft in Guinsiliban, and lanzones in Mahinog.
The OTOP concept is adapted from Japan's successful One Village, One Product (OVOP) project started in 1979 by Gov. Morihiro Hiramatsu of the Oita Prefecture as a form of people's participation in the regional development of that country. (DTI-Camiguin/PIA-Camiguin i-Net)

Cunanan and M. A. Zamora

dark_knight_detectve August 22nd, 2008, 07:35 PM the good thing about our st. augustine's feast is that there are both a festival and a fiesta. festival is for the celebration of cdeo's patron saint and cdeo's rich culture while the fiesta is all about eating. in short, there are a lot of events and at the same time "pakals" for everyone. most cities only have festivals but doesnt have the "pakals" which is sometimes the most prefered event. next week is the event. happy fiesta and festival CdeO! Long live CdeO!

IN ONE unprecedented move, the Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan Alumni Association (XU-AAA) on Friday honored sportsmen from as far back as the 1950s as it launched the first ever Sports Hall of Fame Awards.
Visit the Beijing Olympics 2008 blog
The honorees are considered sports legends by the alumni who were kings of the hardcourt of their time.
XU-AAA President lawyer Boy Labuntog (XUHS '65) explains that, "this recognition is long overdue. The alumni believe that it is time to acknowledge Xavier sportsmen who had brought honor and glory to our alma mater."
Labuntog said the games in the past would constantly bring fun and excitement not just to the students but also to the community during summer leagues and inter-school games.
"Our players were a force to reckon with on the courts," he said.
Fifteen awardees were installed in this year's Sports Hall of Fame Awards, namely: Fernando "Baguing" Arguelles, Antonio "Tony" Cabading, Orientano "Tony" Dolores, Jr., Sulitario Ebdalin, Gonzalo Go, Councilor Alfonso Goking, Potenciano "Jun" Larrazabal, Anselmo "Boy" Mecado, Carlos Eduardo Mercado (+), Francisco Mercado, Manuel "Maning" Moraza (+), Luisito Neri, Mario Nery, Eduardo "Eddie" Ong, and Antonio "Tony" Orqueza (+). These alumni were famous for their admirable skill in basketball.
In addition to the recognition that the XU-AAA shall give to the deserving alumni, Labuntog said they will also set up the Sports Hall of Fame endowment fund intended to help XU athletes.
Alumni Director Adrian Pabayo said he is pleased about this development, as it will mean more funds for scholarships. "We are grateful to the alumni for initiating this project; our student athletes will definitely benefit from this."
XU President Fr. Jett Villarin also expressed his gratitude to the alumni for both the awards and the endowment fund. "I personally believe that sports build character, and by supporting our athletes through scholarships, the alumni are actually helping them fulfill their dreams," he said.
The Sports Hall of Fame Awards is one of the major events during Xavier University's Grand Alumni Homecoming from August 15 to 24, 2008. (Press release)

Niños take 2-0 lead
THE M. Lhuillier-Cebu Niños shot 39-of-74 from the field en route to taking a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five quarterfinal series after a one-sided 99-73 win over the Trace Laguna Stallions in Game 2 of the 2008 Liga Pilipinas Smart Playoffs at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
Using different starters from Game 1, the quintet of Rino Berami, Marlon Basco, Gerry Cavan, Jayford Rodriguez and Woodraw Enriquez responded well as they dropped an early 10-2 blitz before the quarter ended with Cebu leading 27-14.
The only time Laguna had the lead was at Jerwin Gaco’s opening basket at 9:25 mark. From there, it was all Cebu’s game with the Niños using an 11-0 run to start the second quarter and building a 20-point lead along the way.
Cebu outclassed the Stallions from all angles, out-rebounding the visiting squad 43-30. They also had the advantage in assists (20-8), steals (4-1), shot blocks (2-1) and in turnovers (8-13).
The Niños also was ahead 10-7 in fastbreak points.
Ron Capati came off the bench to lead Cebu scorers with 17 points. Gaco, on the other hand, scored 19 for Laguna.
Cebu will try to end the series on Wednesday as they visit the Stallions at the Trace College Gym in Los Baños, Laguna.
Meanwhile, the Misamis Meteors survived a tough game to lead 2-0 over the No.2 seed Pagadian Explorers following an 84-81 win in Game 2 in the opening game.
The Meteors will try to end the series at the Xavier University Gym on Monday as they host Games 3 and 4.
Dondon Tadena lead MisOr with 17 points, while Mark Kong topped Pagadian with 15.
A day after losing the series opener without a fight, Pagadian struggled without its star player Mark Yee for the first three quarters. Yee played in the fourth and scored 11 points, but that was not enough to salvage the Game for the Explorers. (RCM)

ona August 23rd, 2008, 09:59 AM Para sa akin LKK is more than enough for CDeO at the meantime kasi booming ang construction within the complex. At its current state its already the most expansive and comprehensive complex in Mindanao what more if the towers and hotels materialize. LKK will be at par to the world-class centers in Metro Manila and Cebu so that in itself is an achievement already.
mottymot_007 August 23rd, 2008, 11:48 AM i hope i'm not wrong but I think I heard over an FM station here that SM will be holding fireworks display on Aug 25 and 31 at Gran Via parking lot.
can someone please confirm it? lolz.. thanks!
