derogatory, that is, on the part some people nga closely related sa usa ka condition or discrimination. Lagi, preha sa negro, according to my tita in Louisiana, mabikil jud sila anang call nga "negro", "******", "*****", "black", "dark" og uban pa. Busa when in front of them, pointing to the dark color is hard to do specially kung dunay i point nga butang nga ang color itom.

pero sa states jud, dapat dili negro, pero pinoys are used to that word, kay spanish for black is "negro" baya so sanay ta anang term...kahit walang malice sa atin, sa kanila sobrang racial discrimination na.

yup i do agree that sobrang heavy nga ang traffic dyan kung rush hour. i tasted it more than once ( sa may coca-cola, gaisano, before and after the bridge)... i guess the only way to eradicate that is to open more roads and bridges. are there any new road projects there para ma eradicate na ang traffic dyan?
I agree with you, Bai... New roads are needed... Grabe gyud ka-traffic diha... In other urban centers, traffic is also heavy... Pero, at least moving... Hapsay... Sa CM Recto, CdO, usahay, 15 to 20 minutes na di ka mo-move (this is an understatement, actually)... Traffic is heaviest at CM Recto and Makro area going to the bridge, especially during peak hours... Before, traffic was also very heavy in Vamenta Blvd going to Ysalina bridge... Re-routing was their solution for the problem... Now, it's not that bad... Thanks to the new bridge at Ilaya... Once the bridge connecting Kauswagan and Puntod is completely passable, mas OK na dayon ang traffic sa CM Recto... More roads, PLEASE! :-)

i guess the city officials should contemplate in building roads that bypass the city center. para yung walang business sa city can bypass those roads with gridlock. just like in metro manila, may C5, sa cebu may roads sa srp, sa davao may diversion road at diversion pa sa diversion road. meron ba ganyan dyan?

kasi i think there are alot of vehicles that ply the dvo-cdo-iligan route and the bxu-cdo-iligan route. tapos may mga local vehicles pa. tapos they are passing through one single route. with the volume of traffic that is passing there gridlock talaga.

There's a proposed coastal highway which will start somewhere in Bugo and would lead straight to the Puntod-Kauswagan bridge... From there it will go straight to Iponan passing by the Bulua Terminal and Public Market... For now, there are roads which I consider "diversion roads"... From the West, you can take the Patag road instead of the national highway... Problem is, it will lead you straight to the heart of Carmen... From the East, the JR Borja Extension is one... However, it will pass through the very heart of Cogon... Once the JR Borja Bridge will be completed, this is one route you can take if you are coming from the East and going to the 1st district of the city... For now, we'll just have to know alternate roads for us not to be caught in a traffic jam... Going to Uptown CdO... You can always use the new bridge connecting Brgy Nazareth and Ilaya, Carmen... Smooth kaayo ang traffic, Bai... Makahunong lang ka kajot near the West City Central School and junction to Balulang... And, the only real problem in this route is when you pass by the Trendline area (Super Heavy ang traffic at around 5 to 6pm, as in!) from Camaman-an going to Nazareth and finally to Macasandig... Going to Kauswagan, Bonbon, etc... from the western part of the city, I never pass by CM Recto, starting from Capt. V. Roa junction up to Licoan, especially during peak hours! From the highway, take a right at Osmeña st. then go straight... Take a left when you reach a deadend which is the Carlos Gothong Complex... There will be an island, you can either go straight, then turn left at Pacana; or turn left at Corrales, then take a right at an unnamed 4 lane road still leading to Pacana... From here, you go straight and turn right at the big 7th Day Adventist (not sure, but I'm sure it's not Catholic) school and church complex... Whala! You're on Marcos Bridge na... This 2 to 3 km "diversion" will save you up to 15 minutes of travel time... Try it, you guys! Pero, to sum it all up, we need new roads badly... New roads which lead somewhere other than the center of the city... We need them STAT! :-)

WOW!!! What a nice way of introducing yourself...how's your day @overdtop? I know that there are lots of people in this forum who, obviously, have never learned proper manners but I didn't know that you're one them! :ohno: Dude, I've read almost all of the threads and posts about CdeO and Its sad to know that there are people "out there" who can't help themselves make a mess and turn the threads into something less than what its supposed to be (an informative and educational forum about CdeO) because of their unsolicited opinions which doesn't do anybody any good.

I dont post much because I'm no longer in CdeO so I dont have anything informative to share and I know how a single non-threatening statement could blow up into a ridiculous word war because I understand that there are people who dont have anything better to do but meddle with other people's business-like some of the people "out there" who usually start the trouble here in SSC- for whatever miserable reason that they can come up with. I just didn't know that you belong to those kind!

There was nothing wrong with my posts. If asking for information from someone who knows is something that you find offensive, then that's your problem. Dont take it out on me, you might want to mark your calendar and schedule a session with your psychologist!

I visit this forum almost everyday only to learn and hear about the progress in CdeO/Nothern Mindanao and not for some B.S. crap from people like you!... Yeah, ive read your posts, and aside from your sarcastic two-word phrases, I dont recall reading something informative from you because it seems like your vocabulary is limited...so until you produce something informative that you can post and until you learn to increase the number of words you use in a sentence, perhaps you can tone down the rhetoric eh?

I dont know and I dont care who you are. Based on your posts which describes the kind of person you are, I even doubt that you're a Kagay-anon...but if you are, well, then it would be a shame to call yourself one! Majority of the Kagay-anons I know do not have the attitude that you show in your posts... but then again, you are entitled to your own opinion (no matter how worthless it is) so don't hold back... you fight the power, BROTHER!

I could go on all day...blaah...blaah...blaah...but never mind...

To all SCC-CdeO forumers, I apologize for getting out of line here. Didnt really want to take it this far...

OT lang ...

guys, belated happy fiesta dha...i was there yesterday. Grabe kabibo inyo night cafe oi though nakita lang nako sa pictures before, lahi jud ang personal nga experience nako dha last night... Convenient pud ang whole area coz mcdonald's, mang inasal, are open 24 hours including chowking... Daghan good buys nga divisoria manila style, street foods, live band, as well as the bunch of people around. Good thing pud nga maayo pud ang police and security. The garbage collectors are also collecting at 1 am...all i can say is nice jud ang organization! worth emulating kaayo!

Despite the volume of people yesterday, bugnaw ghapon ang aircon or wa mo fade. Kung daghan tao sa ketkai hasta pud ang SM kay after ketkai i went up to Lumbia man pud.

can you guys stop quarelling and instead we talk about how our agencies improved the flow along this segment of Iligan-CDO-BXU hi way please?:)

thanks to burotski for his travel tip.. I can recall a group of friends here in Butuan who went to Iligan for a quick visit...they intend to return to Butuan on the same day at the soonest time...however coming from Iligan...they were eventually caught in turtle paced traffic in this segment of Iligan-CDO-Butuan hiway which is also unfortunately part of the intra city road system as C. M. Recto..

what I am saying in a bigger sphere...the turtle paced flow in C.M. Recto is not only a problem in CDO but has also become a concern between the transport links between the points in Iligan, CDO and Butuan..

for this matter, as short term remedy (while a by-pass road is not yet in place) would be to alter routes to roads that lie parallel to C.M. Recto by using del Pilar-Juan Luna Sts...and J.R. Borja as these thoroughfares are free flowing.. inter city vehicles need not use C.M. Recto....instead they will have to use other parallel roads and bridges spanning the cagayan river.

we have a previous problem too here in Butuan as the old Magsaysay Bridge was once bottleneck for both intra-Butuan as well as inter-Butuan,CDO,Davao, Surigao transports... the problem was significantly improved with mandatory use of parallel roads and of course the newly built by-pass highway and Macapagal Cable Stayed Bridge..

would it be very likely if we can build a viaduct along the coast of Gusa or even starting in Agusan heading to Macabalan port area then a road going to barangay Kauswagan.....then rounding up to Bulua towards its exit to Iligan hiway? RROW problems will be kept to minimum if I think a by pass hi-way will be planned in this direction rather than going more interior right smack at the poblacion..

para lahos lahos ug sirit sirit na ta tanan biyahe dire sa NorMin:)

waddya think guys.. ?

Oro archdiocese celebrates Diamond Jubilee (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/01/life/oro.archdiocese.celebrates.diamond.jubilee.html)
By Terry D.C. Betonio
Contributor

SEVENTY-FIVE years of teaching and spreading the word of God. And 75 more years are not enough to further relay to the Christian faith how good and loving God is.

The Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro is celebrating its Diamond Jubilee as a diocese this year.

What better way to reminisce those 75 years of faithful service than showing them off in photographs - preserved all these years.

Last August 26, a photo exhibit dubbed Paghanduraw (reminisce) opened at the Second Level of Limketkai Center with no less than the Papal Nuncio, Most Rev. Edward Joseph Adams, as special guest.

On display at the exhibit were about 90 photographs - majority of which are in black-and-white taken in the year 1910s.

The photos showed the evolution of the Church of Cagayan de Oro from a diocese to an archdiocese, and how the first bishop, Fr. James Thomas Gibbons Hayes, S.J., molded the people of Cagayan de Oro into the Christian believers that they are now.

Fr. Hayes was born in New York and was known as a man of missionary spirit. He spoke Visayan fluently. He had served as assistant in Talisayan, Misamis Oriental and as parish priest of Cagayan de Oro. He was appointed by Pope Pius XI as the first bishop of the diocese of Cagayan de Oro on January 30, 1933.

Bishop Hayes was later appointed as archbishop when Cagayan de Oro was elevated from a diocese to an archdiocese on June 29, 1951 by Pope Pius XII.

Through the efforts of Archbishop Hayes, he founded the Lourdes Academy for Girls (now called Lourdes College), the Sisters of St. Paul de Chartes, Maria Reyna Hospital and the Carmelite Monastery.

He also founded San Jose de Mindanao Seminary and Ateneo de Cagayan with the help of religious women.

One photograph in the exhibit showed the joint Baccalaureate Mass of the first graduates of Ateneo de Cagayan and Lourdes Academy, held at the St. Augustine Cathedral in the 1930s.

Also on display at the exhibit were photographs of the first communicants from Barangay Macabalan in Cagayan de Oro and Catarman in Camiguin, taken in the 1950s; the re-redos and vaulted ceiling of the sanctuary of St. Augustine Cathedral before World War II; and the ruins of the Cathedral and the Archbishop's Palace after World War II.

Japanese troops were believed to have occupied the Archbishop's Palace at the height of the war.

One photograph also showed the ruins of the Cathedral after being bombed by the Americans in 1945. While viewing the photograph, the Papal Nuncio, who is an American, was overheard as saying, "That was bad."

Also shown were black-and-white photographs of the parish church in Barangay Lumbia that was made of sawali walls taken in 1921; the Our Lady of Candelaria in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental as it appeared in 1916; the old Our Lady of Snows Parish in Tagnipa (now named El Salvador City); the makeshift St. John the Baptist Parish Church in Lagonglong, Misamis Oriental; the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental; the St. Francis Xavier church in Initao, Misamis Oriental as it appeared in 1944 to 1945; and the San Nicolas Church of Mambajao in Camiguin as it appeared in 1935.

Also shown were photographs of the archbishops who succeeded Archbishop Hayes, namely Archbishop Patrick Cronin, Archbishop Jesus Tuquib and Archbishop Antonio Ledesma, the present archbishop of the archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.

Aside from priceless photographs, other mementos on display at the exhibit were an aspersory (a container for holding water) and aspergillium (a wooden material with a hole used for sprinkling the water) that was kept by the Immaculate Concepcion Parish in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental; a corn stone mill (galingan) from the Mother of Perpetual Help Parish in Baliwagan, Misamis Oriental; a Roman Mass sacramentary written in Latin from the St. Alphonsus Rodriguez Parish in Balingoan, Misamis Oriental; and a 400-year-old statue of the Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan which is believed to be miraculous.

Accounts showed that four times the St. Augustine Cathedral was destroyed, including the bombs dropped by American planes during World War II, but the miraculous statue "stood still, untarnished amidst the rubbles."

It was also said there were many occasions of healing from deadly ailments, miraculous interventions and sightings that were attributed to the Virgin of the Fort of Cagayan (Birhen sa Kota sa Cagayan).

Dozens of stories and experiences more accompany these priceless photographs and mementos for everyone to literally reminisce - as what the exhibit hopes to realize.

The stories that accompany the passing years captured in photos have sacramental value to modern-day Catholics, considered not just an ordinary witness to the growth of the Church but also signs of all the graces the Church receive.

Paghanduraw is not only about the recollection of memories. It is also making present the passing of the Lord in the 75 years and more of His Church that has withstood the test of time and struggles.

interesting yung golden mile project ah. is it a mile long development? there's one structure in makati named something like that.

according sa billboard... the golden mile is 1 kilometer long

They should change it to golden kilometer. And we should be doing metric system :)

Love the work and play at CDO. :)

cheers,
Bisaya Dako

Nope. That's a Golden Mile stretch. 600 meters walkway and 1 kilometer boulevard is equals 1 mile. Try to look at the photo below. I hope this project will not delay in miles long.:D

CdeO fiber steps into national limelight (http://sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/01/bus/cdeo.fiber.steps.into.national.limelight.html)
By Mark D. Francisco

CAGAYAN de Oro's very own Puyo Handicrafts stepped into the national spotlight on the August 27 edition of Unang Hirit.

This after the local business was featured in one of the segments of the GMA early morning show as hosted by Jolina Magdangal.

Miss Kagay-an Tourism 2007 Diana Bagonoc, first runner-up Dianne Galenzoga and fourth runner-up Kathleen Marie Tabada were featured in the program donning Puyo Handicrafts accessories.

Puyo Handicrafts products are a fusion of combining local and environmentally friendly products.

Using indigenous materials such as abaca fiber, cogon grass, flowers, and leaves, members of the Misamis Oriental Multi-Fiber Cluster Inc. (Momci) are able to creatively design and manufacture novelty items such as bags, cards, writing materials, and other similar items.

These are sold locally and exported to clients abroad, particularly in the US and in Europe.

These quality crafted items and accessories that boast of Filipino ingenuity however have yet to be appreciated by most Filipinos.

"On one hand, it is sad that most of our countrymen prefer imported goods that are expensive and do not support local businesses while people in the US and Europe appreciate the novelty of our products," Momci president Vivian Libao of Puyo Handicrafts noted.

"But on the other hand, we at Momci consider this lack of patronage as a challenge. Moreover, we are confident because we produce environment-friendly products which are globally acceptable," she further explained.

Libao also urges the general public to support and patronize their products in order to sustain the livelihood of women and indigenous people.

Momci products were recently on display at the Kahimunan Mindanao 2008, at Limketkai Atrium.

In particular, Puyo Handicrafts products are made from abaca/Manila hemp.

Abaca is the premier cordage fiber of the world.

It is a structural (hard) fiber obtained from the outer layers of the overlapping leaf sheaths which form the stalks of the abaca plant.

It is very light, strong, and durable.

When properly extracted and dried, it is also of a white, lustrous color.

One particular feature of the abaca fiber which emphasizes its superiority over all other fibers of its class is its great strength and its resistance to the action of water, hence its particular adaptability for marine ropes.

Making an accessory out of abaca begins when the trunk of a plant is cut down two to four times a year to harvest the fiber.

The leaf sheaths are then stripped and the pulp is scrapped off to get the abaca fiber strands.

To make ropes, the strands are twisted together. These strands are mainly composed of cellulose, pectin and lignin.

Abaca fiber is extremely strong and durable, resistant to salt water, relatively cheap to produce, has a beautiful texture and biodegradable and eco-friendly.

Some of the variants available at Puyo Handicrafts (Dolores-Corrales) are wood handle shell bag, abaca flat clutch bag, abaca clutch bag with fur, abaca hobo bag, abaca pouch bag with brooch, abaca thru-pillow, rattan handle banig and hinabol bag, anahaw tote bag and tikog hobo bag.

There are also tikog shoulder flat bag, abaca bag with glass beads, tikog sling bag, kinawit sinamay bag, sinamay tote bag with zipper, among others. (With PIA)

Monday, September 1, 2008

President Arroyo will award the 10 outstanding teachers of the Metrobank Foundation today.

A Palace statement said Mrs. Arroyo will present a trophy and a cash prize of P300,000 to each of the teachers at the Metrobank Plaza Auditorium to mark Metrobank’s 46th anniversary on Sept. 5.

The awardees are grade school teachers Jesusa Antiquiera, Lynn Padillo, Maydelyn Antioquia and Maria Theresse Bagas; high school teachers Rowena Hilbanada, Ermie Rabara, Jeanette Dials and Noei Obcena, and doctors Irma Makalinao and Virginia Cuevas.

The elementary level winners were cited for their civic and volunteer work on education as well as poverty reduction and environmental protection.

Jesusa Antiquiera of P. Gomez Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Manila has been a strong advocate of the “Kilusang Makapagbasa,” a school project that equips parents with skills to teach their children how to read.

Maydelyn R. Antioquia of President Manuel Roxas Memorial School North in Roxas City was cited for her support to the Christian Family Movement for aiding families stricken by calamities in the province.

Marie Bagas of West City Central School in Cagayan de Oro City was cited for heading the health and sanitation committee of their homeowners’ association, working to improve the living conditions of residents in the newly developing area.

“This year’s winners will join the ranks of 266 outstanding teachers who have been honored by the Foundation for the last 24 years,” the Palace statement said.

“They automatically become members of the Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators or NOTED, an honor society of outstanding teachers committed to nurturing a culture of excellence and service among educators through professional development, publication, research, and advocacy in active partnership with government and non-government organizations.”

Metrobank Foundation is the corporate social responsibility arm of the Metrobank Group of Companies.

Over the last 29 years, it has promoted a culture of excellence among Filipinos through its various programs, notably the Search for Outstanding Teachers, the Metrobank Art and Design Excellence, the Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service, the Metrobank Math Challenge, and the College Scholarship Program.

The foundation also has a grants program that assists NGO and the government in the fields of education, healthcare, and the arts.

Metrobank Foundation celebrates Filipino excellence and presents a wellspring of hope in the future of our nation.

“The Search for Outstanding Teachers represents the Foundation’s commitment to promote a culture of excellence in education by recognizing the country’s best mentors who can be upheld as models not only for educators but for other community members as well,” The Palace statement said.

“More than 200 exemplary elementary, high school, and college teachers from all over the country have so far been awarded since its launching in 1985.”

”The President, together with Metro-bank and Metrobank Foundation, believe that by recognizing outstanding qualities and contributions of teachers, countless other teachers all over the country can be inspired to achieve excellence in the teaching profession.” – Paolo Romero

CdeO the Safest and Most Peaceful (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)

The Kagay-an Festival proved it. Cagayan de Oro is the safest and the most peaceful!

With thousands of people watching the festivities, the Hiaga-onon Dance Festival, the Golden Float Parade, the Lambagohan Fluvial Parade, The Ms. Kagay-an Coronation Night, the exhibits and trade fairs, the various shows in the city, all these could have been a nightmare for the police, the military and security agencies. Yet nothing happened and people still braved the crowded places, in spite of warnings of possible sabotage and bombings.

The festival tuned out to be bigger than last year. More people came to attend and there were more activities.

All the events were better organized and people seemed to have learned from their mistakes last year.

The Ms. Kagay-an 2008 was spectacular, the production was great and the contestants were a lot lovelier and smarter.

As in last year, this year’s festival was managed by Promote CDO, and NGO devoted to promote the city as a tourist and investment destination.

The weather in the city also cooperated. Except for scattered rain showers in the evening the daytime weather was just perfect as people crowded the streets to watch the Higa-onon Dance Festival and the Golden Float Parade.

“Horse Sense”, Horse Show in CdeO and the CdO Horsemen Association, Inc. (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/)

By Anselmo B. Mercado

CDO’s Horse Show Competition: The Best in the Federation Circuit:

The Cagayan de Oro Horsemen Association , Inc. hosted the 4th Leg of the 2008 Philippine Horsemen Federation’s National Horse Show Competition last August 22 – 23, 2008. This was held at the horse-training-and-play grounds inside the property of the Fil Estate-Capistrano Subdivision in Barangay Gusa, Cagayan de Oro (near Sacred Heart School). The Horse Show Competition was the Association’s contribution to bring attraction in advance to the City Fiesta of Cagayan de Oro on August 28, 2008 (St. Augustine – the Patron Saint of CDO).

Competitors and horse enthusiasts from the provinces of Davao, Bukidnon, Cebu, Misamis Oriental, Agusan, Manila, etc. came with their prized and favorite horses to participate in the various events, which included the exciting oval track races, the highly entertaining barrel races and the dramatic obstacle races. The competition showed the skills of the riders (men and ladies) and their horses in speed, turning and pole-bending, jumping over different levels of mounds, running in water and mud pits. It was fun to watch the beautiful and daring ladies ride their horses, their hairs flying and flailing in the wind, their bodies jerked roughly but gracefully swaying along with their horses. The men riders could not be outdone, putting on their gusto and bravado they rode in style Filipino. The horses – let’s thank the Good Lord for creating such a wonderful, all-purpose, useful and beautiful animal – they were exciting to watch! R.B. Cunningham-Graham in 1917 wrote: “God forbid that I should go to any heaven in which there are no horses.” This is a sentiment probably shared by many horse-lovers.

Speaking of horses, the Philippines has native horses. In the equine arena, horses that are 12 hands (48 inches) or less in height (from the ground to the top of the withers) are called “ponies”. However, the breeding of horses in the Philippines has gone a long way. Through importation of internationally known breeds (e.g., Arab, Thoroughbred, Quarter horse, Apaloosa, and several others), crossbreeding and mix-breeding of these horses with the native ones have upgraded our Philippine ponies very much, so much so that we find today so many “real horses” in the country. We saw samplings of these during the Horse Show Competition last August 22-23.

The Cagayan de Oro Horsemen Association, Inc., is just a few years old. A fledgling organization as it is, it has already successfully hosted, organized and managed several national Horse Show Competitions during the last few years, and probably the best in the Federation’s circuit. Participants, guests, spectators and fans alike have always expressed their appreciation and wonderful memories of their participation and experience in the horse show events in Cagayan de Oro. These successes have always been attributed to the great support and cooperation that we receive from the generous sponsors, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, the participants from various places, the enthusiastic and disciplined spectators, and last but not least, the CDO Horsemen Association officers and members themselves for their efficient organizing and managing of the tournament activities.

CDO Horsemen Association, Inc.: Officers & Members:

This year’s CDO Horsemen Association, Inc. officers include: Bobby Cabrera (President), Benjie Paras (Vice President), Gaspar Vicente (Treasurer), Jory Heck (Assistant Treasurer), Remus Villarosa (Secretary), Mike Siao (Public Relations Officer), and Board members Hector San Juan, Greg Villanoy and Jun Villar.

The Association has 43 official members, namely (in addition to the officers): Rene Abbu, Jimmy Alketela, Tantan Alceber, Sonia Abundiente, Jun Barros, Irene Bongcayao, Toto Chu, Perla de Asis, Maricel Edward, Boy Elloso, Elvin Elorde, Mark Fabello, Reiner Go, Marites Gomez, Sydney Guzman, Delia Jamaca, Mick Jarales, Boy Mercado, Bong Montesclaros, William Nuneza, Roel Ortigas, Jason Paras, Rene’ Perrine, Charrie Pimentel, Iko Roa, Herzon Solidum, Tammy Tamayo, Ariel Tan, Jun-Jun Tan, Ray G. Tan, Roy Tancinco, Rene Verzales, Emmanol Yoldi, and Harley Yu.

In a fellowship gathering at the horse training and playing grounds (Fil Estate-Capistrano Subdivision) last August 27, 2008, a new set of officers were elected to serve for the next two years. They were namely: Benjie Paras (President), Greg Villanoy (Vice President), Remus Villarosa (Treasurer), Jory Heck (Secretary), and Boy Mercado (PRO), with Board members Bobby Cabrera, Hector San Juan, Mike Siao and Jun Villar.

Vision and Plans:

The Association has set its vision towards a “H-O-R-S-E CENTER” in Cagayan de Oro City. The acronym stands for “Horses/Riders Recreation, Stock and Education Center”, the purpose of which is manifold including, namely: horses and riders’ education and training, breeding and upgrading of horses, recreation, horse shows, games and competition events, public awareness and education about the equestrian world, and the enhancement of a sound ecological environment.

Not too long ago, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro led by City Mayor Constantino Jaraula, had signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the CDO Horsemen Association, Inc. to allocate three hectares of city government land for the “H-O-R-S-E CENTER” in order to realize its vision and purposes. This is a partnership endeavor between the City Government of CDO and the Horsemen Association, Inc., through which both parties commit to undertake and pursue, with mutual obligations and benefits, a common objective -- to enhance Cagayan de Oro’s image as a city of “golden friendship” (and “horsemanship”), a premier city in the country in peacefulness, friendship, hospitality, decency, beauty, cleanliness and economic opportunity – a city to be proud of, a wholesome place to live in and raise a good family.

“HORSE SENSE” (KINA-ADMAN’g KABAYO):

HORSE SENSE - KINA-ADMAN’G KABAYO

(Anonymous) - (Visayan Version: By Anselmo B. Mercado)

A horse can’t pull while kicking. - Ang kabayo dili makabira kon siya motindak.

This fact I merely mention. - Kini’ng kamatu-oran ako lamang gi-ingon.

He can’t kick while pulling, - Dili usab siya makatindak kon siya mobira.

which is my contention. - Mao kini ang akong opinyon.

Let’s imitate the good old horse, - Awaton ta sa atong kinabuhi ug tanan kanato

and lead a life that’s fitting. - ang maayo ug dalaygon nga kabayo.

Just pull an honest load, and then - Magmatinud-anon kita.

there’ll be no time for kicking. - Dili magbirahanay ug magsinipa-ay. Magangay-angay kita, aron atong kinabuhi magmalinawon ug mahapsay.

Designing for Success : SLERS' Pica-Pica Cart (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/72764)

Integrity and Teamwork are not the usual buzz words which come to mind when one thinks of I.T. But for Mercedes "Litlit" Pelaez-Mejia and Clara Gonzales-Elizaga, these are the two key elements which has made SLERS Industries, Inc. "Pica-Pica" Cart their personal stylistic triumph.

Litlit is the franchising director for SLERS Industries, Inc., a Cagayan de Oro based family-business started by her mother Ofelia "Fely" Cosin-Pelaez 38 years ago in Del Monte, Bukidnon. Beginning with country style ham she made for plantation employees during Christmas, the home-based "cottage industry" eventually grew to encompass a full range of meat products including Pinoy staples tocino and longganisa, bacon and hotdog, and of course its flagship product, the famous SLERS Jamon de Cagayan de Oro.

Clara is the other half of the "Mom-and-Pop" dynamic duo of Nazca Designs. Together with hubby Elson, Nazca offers clients photography, web site development, product design and raw materials development services.

Nazca and SLERS go back a long way to the time when Litlit asked Clara to improve the packaging for their sweet ham. The Nazca version proved so successful in increasing sales that Litlit immediately asked Clara to improve the packaging for their Jamon de Cagayan de Oro. Since then, SLERS has retained Nazca as the exclusive designer for its products.

"The design of our products and fixtures are a continuing process between me and Clara," Litlit notes. "If I have an idea, I bring it to Clara who evaluates if it is workable and most important, viable financially and commercially."

But it was when Litlit asked Clara and Elson to work on SLERS Chicharon that the company's decision to go through a formal design process really proved itself. Introduced in January 2006, SLERS Chicharon quickly became the company's fastest moving and most famous product, encouraging Litlit to develop a pasalubong style kiosk which they have franchised as the SLERS PiCA PiCA.

"PiCA PiCA special to me because I participated in designing its brand identity even before it was born. Kamulo pa conceptualize sa PiCA PiCA I was there already there. I designed the logo, conceptualize its visual identity, designed the packaging, designed the cart, planned the colors schemes, and even helped with the mascot design, "Clara said.

"Thus, our kiosk is the product of a design evolution which has remained consistent with its design theme and product concept laid down by Litlit. Through this process, we have developed a teamwork which has given us what we want in terms of product development while at the same time retaining our consistency in terms of our design theme," she added.

The SLERS PiCA PiCA kiosk is focused on the SLERS Chicharon which is now available in two types (with or without pork fats) and which are each available as "hot" and "standard" versions. Besides the four types of Chicharon, the kiosk also carries a newly developed complementary product, SLERS Sukang Tuba which provides livelihood to rural families in El Salvador and other towns in Misamis Oriental, and SLERS Banana Fritters, which provide similar livelihood for a woman's association in Barangay Lumbia in Cagayan de Oro.

The new design kiosk had its baptism of fire in March 2007 at the CITEM National Trade Fair where it garnered a nomination for "Best Booth Design".

"PiCA PiCA started with the right mindset, in terms of design. From the very beginning it had its own visual identity," Clara noted. "It's unlike most local brands who starts first with producing and distributing the product and worrying about the design later. In PiCA PiCA's case, the design was born together with the product."

As a fitting tribute to the active collaboration between artist and owner, SLERS was recognized with the "Franchisor's Touch" award during the Association of Filipino Franchisors, Inc. (AFFI) annual trade fair last July 2007 where the company was recognized for its "personal touch" in explaining the franchise to interested visitors, with Litlit personally presenting the PiCA PiCA concept for the duration of the exhibit. In its latest triumph, the booth was awarded "Best Dressed Booth" (Food Category) in the recently concluded Kahimunan Mindanao '08 Island Fair at the Atrium of the Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.

The PiCA PiCA kiosks are now deployed to the company's five franchisees in General Santos and Davao cities, as well as SLERS seven company owned outlets in Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Iligan where they've become recognized as landmarks where one can get the famous SLERS Chicharon.

In fact, the kiosks have proven so successful its design has been copied lock, stock and barrel by some competitors. This has sometimes led Litlit and Clara to rue how their time, money and effort has been so easily taken advantage off by their competitors, but eventually, it has led them to realize just how true the old adage about "imitation being the sincerest form of flattery" is.

My Friends from Malatya (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/72763)
Mike Banos

August 31, 2008

I was writing for a business broadsheet a year ago when I first noticed that a Turkish restaurant had opened in SM Cagayan de Oro. Food and restos being some of the things I specially like to write about, I asked SM Cagayan de Oro Public Relations Officer Ivy Guantero to introduce me to the owners.

http://www.americanchronicle.com/img/galleries/714/0/With_Dalkilic_family_at_Turquiose_Resto.jpg

The first member of the family I met was Muhammad Rizal Dalkilic, 28, the youngest of four siblings who was charged with marketing for the Turquoise Turkish Restaurant. The Dalkilic family hails from Malatya, located 670 kilometers east of Ankara, Turkey's capital city. Besides the Turquoise, they also have an import-export company which exports Mindanao's fruits and other agricultural products to Turkey.

Rizal (pronounced with a silent L) is the President and Philippine representative for the Istanbul Foundation for Science and Culture (Studies on Risale-i Nur and Muslim-Christian Relations). A frequent visitor to the Philippines, he has taken graduate studies at the University of the Philippines (Diliman) and Xavier University (Ateneo de Cagayan).

From July to September, 2006, his elder brother Mahmut, 35, (who owns Turquoise) looked at possible locations in the Visayas and Mindanao but finally settled on Cagayan de Oro where Rizal and his wife Fatima, 26, had settled down. At that time, there was only one certified Halal restaurant in Region 10 and it was the location closest to Islamic communities in Marawi City, and the two Lanao provinces.

Prior to their departure for the Philippines, Mahmut and his wife, Banu, 33, were social workers of the Hizmetler (social welfare dept.) in Turkey and also owned a restaurant. Their daughter Duru is a first grade student at the nearby Rosevale School.

But that wasn't to be the end of my acquaintance with the Dalkilic family. Shortly after my interview, Rizal requested my assistance in publicizing their distribution of free beef (called qurbani) from 450 cows during the Muslim festival of Eid'ul-adha, the second biggest Muslim holiday after Hari Raya.

I learned from him that in the previous year, some 900 Nur students in the Turkish cities of Istanbul, Malatya, Adana and Ankara contributed funds to help distribute qurbani to poor Muslim and Christian families across Mindanao. The response of Turks back home was so enthusiastic after they learned of the qurbani his group distributed in Mindanao and Metro Manila they were able to easily double the number of beneficiaries last year.

For the coming Holy Month of Ramadan which falls on September, 2008, Rizal's group will once again distribute one kilo of beef qurbani to each poor family in addition to a packet of iasha (a package which includes 5 kgs rice, 5 kgs cooking oil, vegetables, condiments, biscuits and some surprise gifts).

This was something really new to me, even allowing for the years I have spent in close proximity to many Muslim friends in Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro, Marawi and the Lanao provinces. To think that a Muslim from far away as Turkey was willing to extend their traditional qurbani to poor Christians made an impression on me that lasts to this day.

The next project where I was involved was even more impressive: a 10-day tour of Mindanao a year ago now by a group Turkish scholars and businessmen for a series of interfaith dialogues to allow them to see for themselves the poverty in Mindanao and what they could do to help.

The scholars were led by Ustadz Abdullah Yegin, an 84-year old religious leader in Turkey; Hatem Ozpolat, another religious leader and Ihsan Kasim, a religious leader, scholar and translator. The group inaugurated the Institute of Rizale-i Nur Mindanao in Marawi City, an educational institution headed by Rizal as president, which is dedicated to the religious studies of Rizale-i Nur and the improvement of education in Mindanao by combating ignorance, poverty and conflict.

Local business leaders led by then-Promote CDO President Rudy Meñes also got to meet the visiting businessmen at a dinner meeting at the Turquoise. The visitors included Ahmet Celik, who owns a chain of fast food outlets which Mr. Dalkilic said is like the Jollibee of Eastern Turkey, and Zeki Saygi, a hotelier and restaurateur who operates the world famous Caravan Sarai restaurant and convention center.

But perhaps the most eye opening experience I shared with the Dalkilic family was when they invited me to Rizal's residence for Ihtada night where a balik-Islam embraced the new faith followed by Qiraat (reading the Holy Book) and Sohbet (interpretation of sacred book of Islam).

The latter activity is so much like the Bible Study sessions I've attended as a member of the Cagayan de Oro City Church of the United Church of Christ in the Philippines (UCCP). This experience left me contemplating why people of various faiths didn't get together more often to share the Word of God.

Just a few weeks ago, I met their sister, lawyer Saime, 32, who was in town for a visit. I'm sure she's impressed with what her brothers have accomplished so far in this far away country, including Mahmut's new Turkish Restaurant in Davao. Very soon, a new Risale-I Nur Institute will be inaugurated in Macanhan, Bgy. Carmen in this city. I look forward to the day when I can meet their eldest brother Niyazi, head and manager of the Finance Bank of Turkey when he comes by for a visit.

I can only hope we can live up to the faith, hope and charity Rizal, Mahmut, Saime and their families have so generously shared with me and my fellow Filipinos. The Turquoise is truly a gem worthy of the name of this Turkish restaurant in this far-off land.

By Mike Banos

Engr. Reuben "Benjie" Paras has been elected the new president of the Cagayan de Oro Horsemen, Inc. replacing two-year president Roberto "Bobby Cabrera" during the annual general assembly held Wednesday, August 27, 2008 at the "Stables" hosted by the Fil-Estate/Capistrano Subdivision in Barangay Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City.

Members of the Cagayan de Oro Horsemen Association, Inc. elect their new officers at the "Stables" at the Fil-Estate/Capistrano Subdivision at Bgy. Gusa, Cagayan de Oro last Aug. 27.

Also elected were Greg Villanoy, vice president; Jory Heck , secretary; Remus Villarosa, treasurer; and public relations officer (P.R.O.) Dr. Anselmo "Boy" Mercado.

The newly elected officers together with the Board of Directors make up the Horsemen's policy making body. Besides Paras, Heck, Villarosa and Mercado, other members of the board include immediate past president Bobby Cabrera, Dr. Hector San Juan, Michael Siao, Jun Villar and Gaspar Vicente.

http://72.167.49.190/~allstar/uploads/hcz3ktocJr.jpeg

According to newly-elected P.R.O. Boy Mercado, the Cagayan de Oro Horsemen Association is just a few years old. Young as it is, it has already successfully hosted, organized and managed several National Horse Show Competitions.

"Participants, guests, spectators and fans have all always expressed their appreciation and wonderful memories of their participation and experience in the horse show events in Cagayan de Oro," Mercado noted.

"These have been attributed to the great support and cooperation that we receive from generous sponsors, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, the Barangay Gusa officials and staff, police and security personnel, the participants from various places, the enthusiastic and disciplined spectators and not the least, the CDO Horsemen Association officers and members themselves for their efficient organizing and managing of the tournament activities."

The club has also successfully hosted a number of long trail rides during summer which attracts riders from all over the region and even from abroad. The trail rides blazed by the horsemen are reputed to be among the best around the world. It is being pushed by the club as one of Cagayan de Oro's adventure sports along with its signature white water rafting.

Villa Arcadia Travel and Explore (http://travelsandtours.dingexx.com/2008/08/25/villa-arcadia-travel-and-explore/)

Well, well, well… Last August 23, 2008 my partner and I went to Villa Arcadia at Calamcam, Talisayan. Supposedly, our plan was in Davao to experience the amazing event according to them which is the Kadayawan Festival; however, due to some government issues that arise in Mindanao (involving the MILF and the Military) we could not attend the said event because of bombing threats. The second option that we had is to visit Malaybalay City and see the marvelous work of art which is the transfiguration wherein the view is nice and fantastic. The reason why we weren’t able to go to Malaybalay City is because our friends could not make it.

My partner and I had already made plans to have a vacation and do some relaxing to get away with our daily workloads. We already set our minds to go somewhere hence we opted not to postponed this vacation for that particular reason. We’ve been checking resorts that are safe to go to. We have choices like Duka bay, Manatagale and Villa Arcadia. The first two choices were scratched due to the price. Instead we went to visit Villa Arcadia resort which was a lot cheaper compared to the first two choices. My friend Joy said that it was cool and nature aficionado. The entrance to the villa is quite warm and welcoming. Indeed the place is nice and good, the ambiance is cool and refreshing while the view so scenery, peaceful and has a panoramic view. The villa has amenities like swimming pool, glass-bottom boat, café in front of the deep blue sea, bay walk for those lovers that would like to make some relaxing moment, billiards and a mini jungle for children (monkey, birds, and chickens).

http://travelsandtours.dingexx.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/dsc01052_3.thumbnail.JPGhttp://travelsandtours.dingexx.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/dsc01054_3.thumbnail.JPGhttp://travelsandtours.dingexx.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/dsc01055_2.thumbnail.JPG

The garden’s view and arrangement is well organized as well as the cottages. They have spacious parking lot to those costumer who have cars and their room has different packages from couples to family and is affordable which will range from 500 to 2000 plus. The food is good to taste and just enough however the prices are expensive compared to other resorts we’ve been to. The seashore’s sand is so fine like sugar. With regards to their rooms, we rented there ordinary with air-conditioned room which we think that it is okay however it is so disappointing to know that they don’t have comfort room and shower room inside the room just like most resorts have instead they have common comfort room and shower room which you have to go out from your room to take shower or pee.

Annoyingly, though they have shared shower and comfort room they don’t have shampoos and soaps for their guest’s only towels. And to top it all, the water is salty. The room that we had is a small room which only has a bed and a table and mirror. One more thing, they don’t have trash bin inside the room. And even the trash bin was shared. So pathetic… They don’t have any entertainment showcase inside the room just like TV or even a radio to make their guest entertain. Well, we haven’t tried other rooms. The one we have might be different from the other rooms. Just in case you want to visit this place try the other rooms. The room that we have is not recommendable. J The place is recommendable but not there ordinary rooms.. That is the only concern that I have in this resort, the facilities of their ordinary rooms is not good. To the owner of the resort sorry but that was I observe to your resort..PEACE..:-) But overall the entire place was great relaxing including the services….

Vestiges of Old Cagayan de Oro (http://theignatianperspective.blogspot.com/2008/08/vestiges-of-old-cagayan-de-oro.html)

Curiously driving through the now congested old poblacion of a city that is bursting at the seams with people and structures, this wide-eyed visitor is gladdened to espy certain ancient residential structures that continue to clearly reveal the groaning city’s idyllic and left-behind past. Mostly erected of timber structures, of at least two storeys high under GI roofing, these once were prideful domiciles of old Cagayanons. Many of them have been grudgingly and consequently badly restyled to fit their current economic uses – from homey and quiet residences to a clutter mostly of commercial cubicles for small businesses in varying states of unintended ugliness.

Still, a good number of these remnants of a by-gone era continue to exhibit old quaint touches of their erstwhile uses in an almost rebellious bullheaded display of their once gloried past, against the patent monstrosities that the new owners have heaped upon them.

The ensuing picture gallery is a random sampling of some of these once proud structures that either refuse to go the way to oblivion, or because of lack of resources of the owners, unrepentantly continue on their inexorable path toward benign neglect and disrepair, uncared for and left mostly to the elements.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_V4soucedYQA/SKcT6Rzs0cI/AAAAAAAAA6E/8L5qguX_Ork/s400/Bonkia%25201882%2520house.jpg

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_V4soucedYQA/SKcT6iBMqmI/AAAAAAAAA6M/b1zh8_b1TpY/s400/Casa%2520del%2520Chino%2520Igua.jpg

This first one sits at a busy corner a block away from the poblacion’s center of activity and attention, Divisoria Plaza, and looking like some brick house from some foreign temperate country. In actuality, its core structure was formed by coralline shipped from some place in mainland China and hauled and stowed inside the dank hulls of trading ships, to find use in these once remote islands. Built in 1882 by some enterprising Chinese trader who decided to settle in the islands.

Now, layers of mostly concrete topped by the faux brick look hide the old look. And what’s more the old structure was incorporated into a newer concrete building built around it in a very tight embrace making one unified structure.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V4soucedYQA/SKcUedQS9hI/AAAAAAAAA7U/-piT1s-bVoA/s400/Rabe%2520Clinic.jpg

Next comes this European looking structure (with a very unique roof structure) which during our youth served as the envied residence of the late Nemesito Chavez, father to one of our gang mates in HS. It sits at a corner of old Filipinas and Rizal Street, both streets now changed in name. Today while the exterior retains pretty much its old look, everything else has changed. A pawnshop occupies part of the ground floor, while an office takes the side fronting Rizal Street. And sadly the second floor which had the bedrooms then looks unoccupied. A short distance from it was another wooden structure owned by Mr. Chavez’s close relative. This once housed a respectable doctor’s office on the ground floor and rental residence above.

http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_V4soucedYQA/SKcUejNYo_I/AAAAAAAAA7c/d69djfakfD8/s400/Sarmiento%27s%2520Old%2520Hayes%2520Residence%2520trimmed.jpg

Along Victoria Street one lot away from its intersection with Del Mar Street is an old decrepit timber building built in the late 40’s and owned then by a close relative. Now it is occupied as boarding house upstairs and warehouse downstairs of the new owners who maintain a construction/hardware store along Divisoria, a block away.

And along Del Mar Street, again one lot away from its intersection with Victoria is another remnant of the early 50’s, built by an out-of-town aunt who used the place as a rental. It was bought by the same owners of the hardware store and now uses it as rented residence upstairs and warehouse on the ground floor.

Then along old Dolores Street which starts at the city’s main church, the San Agustin Cathedral and used to end less than a kilometer away to the city’s cemeteries. Running west to east, it has also been renamed and the cemeteries of old have all been relocated by the lot owner, the city government which wanted the space. But many of the old houses along this street are still standing today mute sentinels to the many church processions and funeral entourage emanating from the cathedral.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_V4soucedYQA/SKcUQhzJCzI/AAAAAAAAA7M/V_qVsNDrVJM/s1600/Old%2520MacMang%2520Store.jpg

Lastly, this once was among the first commercial buildings fronting the venerable Ateneo, built of concrete and utilized by the owner as their residence above.

yes, it's newly opened road just a few months ago linking Carmen and Nazareth via Kagay-an Bridge. Sand/dust in the road is from recent construction activities where the road contractor (UKC) set up their crushing/batching plant right at the center of that rotunda as seen in the photos taken by @dark_knight...I think the area is not sandy but mixed clayey-loamy-sandy...there's an old naturally growing hardwood right at the middle of the rotunda as seen below so more on clayey...

CdeO Librarian Bids Farewell After 33 Years In Service (http://www.cagayandeoro.gov.ph/?page=news&id=1369)
by Vonette Y. Go/city Information Office

City Librarian Myrna Acedera bids farewell to the City Government of Cagayan de Oro as she retires from the government service effective today, September 1, 2008.

During this morning’s flag raising ceremony, Ms. Acedera gave a three-minute speech before City Hall officials and employees, recalling her service to the City Government of Cagayan de Oro for the last 33 years. In her 33 years stint as a public servant, Acedera has served eight City Mayors of Cagayan de Oro whom she had honorably served with true faith, honesty and dedication. During her incumbency, she had well-represented the City Public Library in various local, national and international conventions and seminars. The latest of which was the World Congress of Librarian in Quebec City, Canada wherein she was the lone Filipino out of the 4,800 delegates from all over the world. The City Public Library is also listed as one of the “Most Outstanding Public Libraries in the Philippines”, Ms. Acedera added. As she bows down from government service, the city librarian takes pride that the Cagayan de Oro City Public Library has been placed in the limelight when she was elected as the National President of the Public Librarians Association of the Philippines and as the founding President of the Mindanao Librarians and Libraries Associations. Acedera expressed her gratitude and thanks to the local government officials, especially the unqualified support of her family, personnel and staff at the City Public Library for their unwavering support, trust and cooperation. “To one and all, I have no other words to say but thank you, thank you and thank you for the 33 years of friendship, and the pleasure of your company” Acedera’s final line.

The area is said to be owned by Tropical Fruit Company... They produce Nata de Coco... This is probably why the hotel is named Tropical Hotel... now, after the unexpected suspension of the SEAIR flights Cebu Camiguin early August, rumors were heard about PAL Express reinstalling Camiguin flights in September. PAL costumer service pretends not to know anything about it.
Anyone here has more accurate (insider?) information?

Sana direct flight from Manila to Camiguin ang PAL Express. Regarding sa SEAIR, hindi naman siguro unexpected ang suspension kasi seasonal route naman talaga ang SEAIR Camiguin.

Mindanao fruits, Vegetables expo draws crowds (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/02/bus/mindanao.fruits.vegetables.expo.draws.crowds.html)

MISAMIS Oriental's richness in agricultural produce and natural and man-made tourism come-ons will be highlighted once again when the Provincial Government hosts the 1st Mindanao Fruits and Vegetables Expo at the Capitol grounds.

Organized by the Northern Mindanao Vegetable Producers' Association (NorminVeggies), the agri-tourism fair is embedded in the quarterly Salo-Tabo sa Kapitolyo of the Provincial Government and will run through September 5.

Expo Director Leo Eduria of NorminVeggies said the 1st Mindanao Vegetable Expo 2008 will include vegetable culinary arts, techno-demo forum on vegetable production, and product presentations of sponsoring companies.

Participating expositors will also be offering free consultations and assistance for those who are interested to venture into vegetable production.

Along this line, Governor Oscar Moreno lauded NorminVeggies for choosing the Provincial Government to host the event.

"The event will definitely provide us the opportunity of showcasing our agricultural products at a higher level even as we, for the past three years now, have also been holding our version of agro-tourism fair, the Salo-Tabo sa Kapitolyo," Moreno said during Monday's opening of the event.

"A synergy of our efforts for this occassion as well as in future joint undertakings could be expected, that of achieving beyond what we normally expect," he added.

With that, Moreno immediately directed the provincial agriculture and tourism departments and other concerned offices of the province to closely coordinate with NorminVeggies to map out the activities for the five-day Salo-Tabo which, as in the past, has been featuring the One Town One Product (OTOP) of each of the 23 towns and two component cities of Misamis Oriental.

For its part, the provincial agriculture office, which is being referred to as the MisOr Aggies, will also be holding seminars on vegetable, mango, and abaca production and marketing at Sunriva Cafe and Restaurant, which is situated in fron of the provincial Capitol.

Meanwhile, provincial tourism officer Roland Butaslac said among the crowd-drawing activities during the five-day long tourism week celebration are competitions on cheerdance, modern dance, ballroom dancing, duet singing, painting, and the nightly cultural presentations. Another innovative activity is the Tilaw sa Misamis Oriental Team Challenge. (Press release)

Toribio Chaves: Poet and Patriot (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/02/life/toribio.chaves.poet.and.patriot.html)
By A. Paulita Roa
Past Speaks

THERE was once a street in the City named Roldan and this was named in memory of Lt. Col. Leopoldo Roldan, the Spanish military governor of the Segundo Distrito de Mindanao from 1877 to 1883. The capital town of the second district was Cagayan de Misamis (now Cagayan de Oro). It was during his administration that the town experienced the golden age of arts and literature.

Among the famous poets of that era was Toribio Chaves, then popularly known as Capitan Bibo. He was born in 1842 to Vicente Chaves and Lina Roa. In those days, a prominent man in the community was sometimes addressed to as Capitan and a lady who was equally distinguished was called Capitana.

Only one short poem composed by Capitan Bibo in Gov. Roldan's time survived to this day aside from the poem, Pinahanongod. Thanks to the eminent historian, Filomeno M. Bautista, who copied the poem that many Kagay-anons in the 1930s could still recite from memory. Below is the poem that was composed in Bisayan:

Aben Hamit, masayod ka,

Sa ako kanimo nga paghigugma
Sa langit dili ako mosulod
Kon sa langit didto wala ka.

This poem was translated to English by Bautista:

Know thou Aben Hamit of my love for thee?
In heaven I shall not enter
If in heaven thou art not there.

Sixteen years after the administration of Gov. Roldan, the Spanish colonial rule in the Philippines was over. For the first time in the history of Cagayan de Misamis and the Misamis Province, the people organized a new government based on the laws and regulations of Emilio Aguinaldo and for the first time in history, they elected their own officials. Toribio Chaves was elected Municipal Presidente or Mayor of the town. He was then 57 years old.

Then on January 10, 1899, the people of Cagayan de Misamis celebrated the inauguration of the first Philippine Republic for two days with a parade, cannonades, music and speeches. The two daughters-in-law of Chaves, Agapita and Getulia Neri de Chaves, and a cousin, Paz Roa de Neri, sewed the first Philippine flag that was publicly hoisted for the first time in town on that historic occasion.
The first Independence day parade started in front of Sia Ygua's house and the street fronting that house was then named Victoria to commemorate that special event. Today, this street is known as Hayes St.

The main float in that parade was that of La Libertad Filipinas where the town's most beautiful woman, Isidra Yamomo, was seen holding the Philippine flag while standing on a broken chain that symbolized Liberty. Below her was a girl named Conchita Fernandez who carried a crown of laurel signifying Victory and the boy on the left, Jose Velez, carried a bolo that represented Defense. This float stopped in front of Casa Real (the present site of City Hall) and on the balcony, Pedro Akut recited the poem that the new Municipal Presidente composed for the occasion entitled Pinahanongod or Dedication.

This 24-stanza poem described the symbolic meanings of the float and freedom the Filipinos now had from more than 300 years of colonial rule. Here are some excerpts of that poem that was originally written in Bisaya:

Hiniktan, tiil, kamot ug hunahuna,
Way kitay pamuot nga kaugalingon,
Mga katarungan ta dili paga tagdon
Sa mga mapintas nga mga Katsila.
Karon kita makahiplos na gayod,
Sa hikot sa pagkaulipon,
Wa nay libug sa lihok nga ugalingon,
Aron maka angay sa ubang mga nasud.
Mga igsoon mao kini ang hinungdan,
Sa lungsay ta karong gikalipay,
Ang bandila sa hinandom kaugalingnan,
Mikayab na gayod sa kalangitan.

But the euphoria of independence from colonial rule was short lived. Fifteen months later, on the early morning of March 30, 1900, American battleships unloaded soldiers at the mouth of Cagayan river. In less than a day, American forces took full possession of Cagayan de Misamis. The local leaders acted wisely by not resisting the invaders who had superior arms and equipment. The American officers went to Casa Real and relieved the Provincial President, Jose Roa y Casas, and other officials of their positions but Chaves was told to continue as the town's Municipal Presidente.

Among the most courageous acts that Chaves did as head of his enemy-occupied hometown was when he, together with other men. openly gathered more than fifty bodies of those who fought against the Americans during the Battle of Cagayan de Misamis.

The bodies were retrieved in different buildings and places around the poblacion and were given a decent burial. This gentle poet was placed in a difficult public position during one of the most violent and painful periods in local history. But he was able to perform his duties well and never shifted his allegiance to the enemy.

On one side of the Ramon Magsaysay monument in Divisoria, the name of Toribio Chaves is written along with the other illustrious heroes of the city. And there is also a street in the local commercial district that bears his name. These are tributes to a man who did not fight with a sword or a gun. The grateful Kagay-anons remembered the sheer courage and strength of this poet-turned-mayor who served his town that was occupied by the enemy while most of his people waged a year-long resistance war on the nearby hills.

And for this, Toribio Chaves earned his place among the heroes of Cagayan de Oro.

Among the descendants of Municipal Presidente Chaves are: Hospicia Ch. Avancena, wife of historian Filomeno Bautista; Eloisa Nolasco- Fernan, widow of Marcelo Fernan; Maria Clara Suniel-Canoy, widow of Henry Canoy; business tycoon Jose Ch. Alvarez and his brother, Antonio, congressman of the 4th district of Palawan; Raul Ch. Rabe, former Philippine envoy to the US Virginia Ch. Nable, the Marchioness of Headfort.

(A. Paulita Roa is a member of the Cagayan de Oro Heritage Council.)

MisOr Meteors to face Taguig Batang Global (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/03/sports/misor.meteors.to.face.taguig.batang.global.html)

MISAMIS Oriental Meteors will be squaring off with Taguig Batang Global in a best-of-five semifinal round in the ongoing Liga Pilipinas inaugural season starting on Friday, September 5, at the CP Tinga gym in Taguig City.

This, after the Governor Oscar Moreno-managed Meteors surprised elimination round second-seed Pagadian Explorers in a three-game sweep last week, thus earning one of the league's four semifinal berths.

Meanwhile, Batang Global earned the right to face the Meteors in the semifinal match after humiliating Iloilo Mang Inasal in a five-game wildcard match-up that ended last Saturday.

The Meteors collected only 20 points, while the Explorers and Batang Global amassed 36 and 35 points, respectively, in the home-and-away elimination pocket tournaments.

Banking on team effort both in offensive and defensive departments, Meteors coach Jun Noel said they will take the series against the third-ranked Batang Global one game at a time.

Batang Global will be hosting Game 1 and 2 on Friday and Saturday (September 5 and 6) in Taguig City while the Meteors will have its turn, of having the home-court advantage at the Xavier University gym, Cagayan de Oro City, next week, September 10 and 11, for Game 2 and 3. Batang Global will host the winner-take-all Game 5, if necessary.

Statistically, Batang Global which averages 84.8 points per game -- the 4th in the league -- is entering the semis with an edge over the Meteors' 74.5 points a game but the latter has proven to be among the top defensive teams in the league.

The Holcim-Hanjin-Happe Toothpaste-backed Meteors ranks second in defense by limiting its opponents to only 73.5 points a game, 25.4 points per game from field goals and 5.4 points per game from beyond the arc. Also, the team has been averaging 6.2 offensive steals per game, led by its ace pointguard Ramil Tagupa, whose 4.8 assists per game is fifth overall.

While Batang Global's Niño Marquez and Boyet Bautista are among the top three-point shooters, connecting more than 44 percent of their attempts, Meteors' small forward Jerome Paterno has been lording it over in the three-point shot department at 47.8 percent while power forward Ruel Hugnatan is 49.2 percent in field goal shooting.

Also, the Meteors will also be relying on its deep bench, which has been contributing more than 50 percent of the team's point productions. In eliminating the Explorers, the Meteors bench contributed 39 points while the starters only produced 30.

In another semifinal match, it will be between Cebu Niños and Batangas Barakos. Winners in these two semifinal matches will dispute the first-ever Liga Pilipinas championship title in the best-of-seven finals. (Press release)

Canopy walk at Macahambus Adventure Park in CDO

Time flies so fast huh!? It’s already the start of the “ber” months. For Filipinos, its the start of the long Christmas season. Well, it also means that the semester break is only a month away (October). Finally, we will have the chance to ease the itch of our feet!

Recently, we booked flights going to the city of the “golden friendship”, Cagayan de Oro! We booked on-line at Cebu Pacific, and roundtrip is 3,998 Php/person (about 90 USD). Btw, our trip will last from October 30, Novemember 2, so we really have to maximized those four days to the fullest!

CDO is the capital of Misamis Oriental province, located in northern Mindanao. Mindanao is the second largest island in the Philippine archipelago, located in the south. The conflict between the military and rebels has been taking place in southern part of Mindanao. But CDO is located in the northern part of Mindanao, which is quite far from the conflict. So there’s no need for us to worry

In CDO, we will visit the Macahambus Adventure Park, where we will do canopy walking, zip gliding and rapelling. Then after, we will do white water rafting. We also plan to visit the Malasag Ecotourism Park, of course the beach, and other interesting sites in CDO.

From CDO, we will also visit the island paradise of Camiguin via ferry boat. It has always been my dream to see this place. It has plenty of white sand beaches and excellent diving and snorkelling sites.

I’m really excited to once again taste adventure! I can’t wait to go

Bus terminal security measures beefed-up after Digos, Davao bombing (http://northernmindanao.com/?p=815)
September 2, 2008
By Lizanilla J. Amarga

Security measures at local bus terminals here are beefed up due to the recent Metro Shuttle Bus bombing at Digos City that killed six persons and injured 28 others, police and the military reported yesterday.

Bomb-sniffing dogs are now, bomb experts, officers with metal detectors and even bus marshals are now being deployed to these terminals.

In Cagayan de Oro City alone, City Police Director Isagani Genabe, Jr. said additional police officers in uniform and in plainclothes are now deployed to the Agora Eastbound Terminal and the Bulua Westbound Terminal.

He said some of these plainclothes officers will be riding the buses with passengers for some selected routes.

He added that he has also ordered all police stations to conduct checkpoints just to make sure that no explosive devices can get through the city.

Also, Genabe said their ordnance division is standing by as well in a 24-hour basis.

Meanwhile, Fourth Infantry Division public affairs officer Major. Michele Anayron said they have men ready to help out the police just in case.

He said they also continue to gather intelligence information but that he requests local residents to immediately report to the nearest law enforcing agency any suspicious activity or person in their area.

“We need help from the people because we cannot be everywhere at all times,” he said.

Meanwhile, Rural Transit Mindanao, Inc. (RTMI) which serves a number of routes all over the region even extending to Davao City, Zamboanga and Cotabato are also taking precautions and are briefing their own bus drivers and dispatchers for any eventuality.

Baby Back Ribs at Bigby's and Videoke at Galam (http://robstroy.blogspot.com/2008/09/baby-back-ribs-at-bigbys-and-videoke-at.html)
Tuesday, September 02, 2008

Hmmm... you really can enjoy munching the foods at Bigby's Cagayan specially when it is free and you are eating right next with the Cagayan de Oro's most adored Mayor and now Vice Mayor of Cagayan de Oro city - Hon. Vicente Emano.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_FQ2NoSRYHxk/SLyeF6Sl8sI/AAAAAAAADl0/eV6tTeTYqNE/s200/01092008453.jpg

We are not actually on the same table with Vice Mayor Emano but as a politician he is, he gave us dessert after our big meal courtesy of my friend Lawrence as a treat to us with Eldie, Elva and Genevieve. With our cheery dispositions we caught Vice Mayor Emano's attention and he stand-up and say hello to us and gave us Chocolate chips cake.

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_FQ2NoSRYHxk/SLyeXkVgI-I/AAAAAAAADl8/GMxtQgpV4Js/s200/01092008450.jpg

One thing I always order everytime I eat at Bigby's is there so called mouth watering "Rock-a-bye Baby Back Ribs". For a regular person like me, Bigby's Baby Back Ribs serving is already a giant meal, so I am full with one serving of it. Plus the chocolate chips cake courtesy of Vice Mayor Emano walla... the meal is complete with Yellow Mango shake on the side... But I don't recommend Bigby's mango shake since the best Mango shake I tasted here is at Tapsi Time. But when you crave for Filipino foods, I go to Tapsi Time with branches along Velez right next to Polymedic Hospital, at Divisoria along Pabayo Street and one near Medical Center right in-front of Provincial Capitol Grounds.

Anyway, dinner is not complete without the Videoke at Galam Videoke Entertainment. If you want to impress your guest with comfortable videoke room, I recommend Galam Videoke. with their spacious room and comfy couches you won't regret your 150 - 200 pesos per hour rent of the place. Yeah, from Bigby's Restaurant at Rosario Arcade, we headed right after to Galam with five of us on Gen's pick-up truck, it is just 10 minutes drive from Limketkai Rosario Arcade. There we were singing at the top of our lungs on the cool sound system entertainment at Galam. We didn't order beers and hard liquors since all of us must wake-up early for job on the morning. But you can order your favorite black label or your Black Muscat, Chardonnay, merlot, how about your favorite Champagne, why not? or if you are a beer belly person then beer is over flowing there like the Filipino favorite beer, the Red Horse Beer or San Miguel Beer, or for body belly figure conscious the San Mig light, or feel the heat of Tanduay rhum.

There you go, it is just a dinner night out with friends. Next plan is out of town trip to Malaybalay...

Nuncio Brings Promise to Philippines (http://zenit.org/article-23481?l=english)

Offers Hope for Peace in Conflict-Plagued Mindanao

CAGAYAN DE ORO, Philippines, AUG. 27, 2008 (Zenit.org).- Though many developed nations are warning against travel to the conflict-plagued region of Mindanao, the apostolic nuncio is visiting the island and seen as raising the level of confidence about the promise of peace.

Archbishop Edward Adams arrived in Cagayan de Oro on Tuesday, invited by the pastor of that Church, Archbishop Antonio Ledesma.

Archbishop Ledesma told CBCPnews that the "visit of the papal nuncio is a good sign; he is giving confidence on the peace and order in Mindanao."

Fighting with the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front in the resource-rich Mindanao region has escalated this month after a breakthrough peace agreement fell through.

Amnesty International reported last week that civilians in the region were forming militia groups, and units from the MILF had occupied farms and homes and displaced another 150,000 people. The 12,000-strong separatist Islamic group has been fighting for greater autonomy in the region for some four decades.

Nevertheless, the nuncio is carrying on with celebrations marking the diamond jubilee of the archdiocese. He will lead the Pontifical Mass at the Metropolitan Cathedral on Thursday in celebration of the feast of St. Augustine, the patron of the archdiocese.

"We have so many events that we have to be grateful for," said Jesuit Father Calvin Poulin, chaplain at Xavier University-Cagayan de Oro, during a short program to welcome the nuncio. "We have received precious gifts, especially in this time in life with some foreign countries giving advisories not to visit Mindanao."

The nuncio also visited a poor community in Macabalan, and attended the opening of a traveling photo exhibit showcasing the history of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.

Ranking the ALA fighters (http://www.boxingherald.com/news/117/ARTICLE/1472/2008-09-02.html)
Article By
Don Leopoldo

Don Leopoldo looks at the Filipino promotional company

The ALA boys are collectively the best fighters in the Philippines right now. Although a few setbacks have momentarily delayed their quest for world boxing supremacy, this writer strongly believes that they will eventually reach that status.

With the able support of father-son tandem Antonio L. Aldeguer and Michael Aldeguer through their ALA Promotions, the fighters under their care are assured of 100% back up in their quest to the top of the boxing world.

Following is my opinion on the best upcoming ALA fighters based on their perceived skills with consideration to their latest ring performances.

1. Z "The Dream" Gorres
He is definitely the best pure boxer in the ALA stable. In fact, his set of skills closely approximates that of the well-accomplished Gerry "Fearless" Penalosa. He showed that he has improved his gas tank (stamina), as displayed in his fight against Nick Otieno. His planned rematch against Fernando Montiel for the WBO super flyweight title will be highly anticipated by Filipino fight fans.

2. Rey "Boom-Boom" Bautista
His recent knockout victory over Eden "Anestecista" Marquez definitely raised his stock for a possible world title fight in the near future. He showed patience and maturity in his latest outing while maintaining his punching power and accuracy. This young lad will go far in his boxing career and is a favorite bet to win a world championship belt in the future.

3. AJ "Bazooka" Banal
His loss to Rafael Concepcion was simply a minor speed bump in his blaze for boxing supremacy. Many still believe in this guy's impressive combination of top-notch skills, dynamic hand speed, and knockout power. With lessons learned the hard way, this kid has no other way to go but up.

4. Donnie "Ahas" Nietes
The current WBO minimumweight titlist displayed great form in blasting his Nicaraguan opponent Eddy Castro in round two. Future big fights are in the works for this boxer.

5. Milan "Milenyo" Melindo
In his fight against Carlos Melo at the Cebu Coliseum last month, this gutsy fighter displayed ring savvy and intensity inspite of lacking a legitimate knockout power. He is a crowd pleaser who likes to stare down opponents. His set of skills together with his fighting heart should make him go places and win a world championship belt in the process.

6. Michael "Bruce Lee" Domingo
In spite of several losses in his fight career, Michael Domingo is definitely one of the most promising fighters in the ALA stable. He has knocked out three of his last four opponents and is definitely ripe for a world-title shot in the near future. His scheduled fight against battle-hardened veteran Ratanachai Sor Vorapin will be closely watched by the Filipino boxing community

7. Jason Pagara
This sixteen-year-old boxer from Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, made his presence felt with a vicious fourth-round knockout of Thailand's Kongdej Sithtrajtrakan. If they don't rush this fighter too soon, he may be a future world-title holder.

CdEO is a midsized city, but its urban area is rapidly expanding. New infrastructures (bridges, roads) recently built and another proposed infrastructures to support and sustain not only the upcoming investments (such as real estates, commercial complexes, and industries), but also for the community projects of the city for the informal settlers living in downtown areas.

Notice the fresh uptown areas of the city before? Now high end subdivisions are invading.

She's related to the Sarraga Family....her middle name is Sarraga.

O.T:

This Miss Kagay-an 2008 is of Don Segundo Gaston's genetic blueprint (I think one of the Spanish politicians in the Cagayan de Misamis before way back 19th century).

Her mom was once Sarraga, first cousin of Jose de Venecia's wife who was once Sarraga, likewise.

Blanco and Dacudao families, whose ranches are widespread in Southern Mindanao nowadays, are also relatives of this Miss Kagay-an 2008.

Now high end subdivisions are invading.

yes, i notice how classy subdivisions there are. I wish i can afford one but i cannot!

There are no longer spaces in downtown areas for these new subdivisions. That's why real estate developers have been targeting the uptown areas. Ayala, Sta. Lucia and Villar Group (the developers that are about to succeed Fil-Estate) have already acquired hundreds of hectares of land in the uptown areas. A Brown (Taekwood Hills) has been busy of its real estate project at the hills of Agusan, particularly at Balubal. Now Filinvest has eyed the uptown areas of CdeO too.

Well, there are lots of affordable subdivisions for you in Iponan. :)

The Economy
Mindanao airports eyed for open skies coverage

DAVAO CITY — Four major airports of Mindanao should be covered by an open skies policy, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) Chairman Virgilio L. Leyretana said in a press conference yesterday.

Mr. Leyretana identified the airports as those serving the cities of Davao, General Santos, Zamboanga and Cagayan de Oro.

Open skies refers to a liberalized regime which reduces or scraps restrictions on commercial air operations. This is in contrast, for instance, to regular restrictions on landing rights, which fix the number of flights allowed per week to a particular airport.

An open skies policy scraps restrictions on number of designated airlines, capacity, frequencies, and types of aircraft; requires that pricing is determined by market forces and charges by costs, with little or no government intervention and no discrimination; and allows marketing, sales and earnings remittance arrangements and systems that enable air carriers to compete better.

"We need a vehicle to improve the tourism sector of Mindanao and declaring an open skies policy in these cities is among them," said Mr. Leyretana, adding that this would connect Mindanao to larger markets in East Asia, Australia and the United States. — CQF

Nuat Thai (Foot & Body Massage) (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/04/life/nuat.thai.(foot.&.body.massage).html)
By Ed Dychauco

IN THIS stressful world, it is not enough that we eat healthy and live healthy. We also have to pamper ourselves. And in doing so, we need to spoil, unwind and treat our mind and body to something relaxing, soothing & comforting.

The newest place in town to do all these pampering is at Nuat Thai, a foot and body massage haven and sanctuary for the tired muscle, body and soul! Located at Papa Juanito's Square, along Agudo Road corner Limketkai Center.

This unpretentious but wholesome sanctuary is franchised by Mr. Edwin Uy of Cebu City and is the latest addition to our ever-growing number of massage places in the city.

With 16 well-trained therapists (nine females - Arlene, Alcris, Asa Marie, Emma, Janet, Junilyn, Joy, Nena, Ruby, Tenie, Louis Marie and five males - Cyril, Edner, Greg, Meejim and MJ) from Cagayan de Oro City, this cream of the crop therapists have to undergo a rigid one-month training under the watchful eyes of Mr. Kenneth Carredo, the owner of Nuat Thai, who studied the intricate authentic art of Thai massage in Thailand!

Nuat Thai offers Thai Dry Body Massage for 60 minutes at P180, Thai Oil Body Massage for 75 minutes at P250 along with other types of massages.

The one I tried was the Aromatherapy Massage where I was given the choice of the following oils: Eucalyptus, Peppermint, Lavender, Camomile, Green Tea and Virgin Coconut Oil. I chose Eucalyptus for the massage oil with Peppermint for the Aromatherapy. What a soothing combination! The massage was a fantastic and surreal experience. My knowledgeable therapist, Greg was really good. With his soft but muscle-relieving tension strokes, the total experience was just wonderful. A calming Christian music in the background makes it feel like heaven on earth!

After the session, I was treated to a delightful and marvelous Thai Herb steaming Bag (or Heating Pad) filled with Herbal Seeds and Grains, Olive-Greens, Lemongrass, Star Anise, Turmeric and Mangosteen Peel for 10 terrific minutes.

The warm bag relieved me of my muscle and joint pains. It truly relaxes my tired muscles!

After an hour and a half of pleasing, soothing & relaxing massage, I was offered a cup of hot green tea, which was exceptionally calmative to my system.

Nuat Thai is a total package for a clean, wholesome pure massage for the entire family. They offer not only physical, but also spiritual relaxation.

Liceo supports biz-academe forum in October (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&fi=p080903.htm&no=78)

Cagayan de Oro City (3 September) -- Matching the human resource needs of industries is the main goal of the Oro Chamber's Business-Academe Program (BAP).

Now on its third year of implementation, Oro Chamber will cap this year's BAP with the holding of the 3rd Cagayan de Oro Business-Academe Forum as one of the major events of the Oro Business Enterprises, Services & Trade (ORO BEST) Expo 2008.

Slated on October 2 at the Atrium Limketkai Center, the forum will serve as a good venue to strengthen the working partnership between the academe and the business sector to ensure the steady supply of highly skilled workers for local businesses to compete with the rest of the world.

"We are fortunate to have Liceo de Cagayan University as a co-organizer of the forum," said Oro Chamber President Rodolfo Menes.

Mr. Menes said that with the support of Liceo and other stakeholders in the region, Oro Chamber will always be able to push for major policy reforms and establish needed linkages to benefit the local economy.

The half-day forum will highlight the topics on Northern Mindanao Human Resource Situationer, Human Resource Needs of Industries and an interplay of relevant information and data on human resource development projects and programs not only for Cagayan de Oro City but for the entire country as well.

School representatives from all over Region 10 and even Mindanao, industry associations, local government units, regional line agencies and human resource officers of industries are expected to attend the event.

The other highlights of the ORO BEST EXPO 2008 include a 3-day ORO BEST Trade Exhibits and JOB FAIR at The ATRIUM, Limketkai Mall on October 2-4; the Oro Chamber Mayor Jaraula Cup Open Golf Tournament at the Pueblo de Oro Golf Course on October 2-5; the 1st Mindanao Resource Conference on ICT on October 2-3; the 3rd Northern Mindanao BMBE Conference on October 4; the Business Development Centre Open House on October 4; and the 3rd Mindanao Tertiary Schools ICT Quiz Show on October 4. MINI city with SUPERSIZE investments/ projects. the first city ever to open Jollibee outside MegaManila. 15 branches and counting.

I think CDeO considered as a "small/tiny" city is really a Misconception bec. in fact CDeO is one of the Largest Cities.

1. It has one of the Biggest land areas (480,000 sq. kms. - larger than other prominent cities like Quezon City, Manila, Antipolo, Cebu City, Bacolod City, Iloilo City, Baguio, Dagupan, Naga, Lucena, Laoag, Tacloban, Lucena). Only a few cities (all in the South) are larger: Davao, Puerto Princessa, Zamboanga, Iligan , Butuan & GenSan.

2. It's one of the most populous in the Philippines (550,000 - 11th largest among all Philippine cities and 5th outside Manila)

Quezon City 2,679,450

2
Manila 1,660,714

This Miss Kagay-an 2008 is of Don Segundo Gaston's genetic blueprint (I think one of the Spanish politicians in the Cagayan de Misamis before way back 19th century).

Her mom was once Sarraga, first cousin of Jose de Venecia's wife who was once Sarraga, likewise.

Blanco and Dacudao families, whose ranches are widespread in Southern Mindanao nowadays, are also relatives of this Miss Kagay-an 2008.

Her mom's name is Pinky... She's a close friend of my parents... Neighbor namo sa Camaman-an si Miss Kagay-an... Actually, she's called Tootsie here... :-)

^^ Actually, a challenge that is not envious in nature. For us, that challenge is worthy for Iligan to emulate as we don't even despise CdeO's development coz we are not anti-development. Well, the good thing is, CdeO is only starting to show its golden glory. Kaya we cannot dismiss the fact that its future is really immense. The presence of industries on its east (Phividec) and east (Iligan) will generally help CdeO alot in terms of commerce and industry too. Manpower likewise as Iligan's graduates can readily support CdeO's needs for manpower not to mention its own population of manpower.

Kaya hindi umaasenso ang Pilipinas dahil puro awayan, tsismisan, inggitan, at siraan. Haayy... the same old crap. When I was young, I was told na kaya daw mas umaasenso ang ibang bansa like US kasi may winter sa kanila. They've been working hard and productive para pagdating ng winter, kahit papaano may naipon sila. The climate makes them work harder kaya mas malayo ang kanilang narating. Another story, kaya daw mabagal ang asenso sa Pilipinas dahil marami daw tayong namana na katangian sa mga Espanyol na naging hadlang sa ating pag asenso kagaya ng sugal at siesta. But when I grew up, I have been starting to realize parang fallacy lahat ng yun. If it's because of our climate, then why do other countries like Malaysia, Brunei, and Thailand are getting more progressive na pareho lang nman ang klima natin sa kanila. And if it's because of Spanish influence, eh bakit mayaman ang Espanya?

Convention center may end as a ‘White elephant’ (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/05/news/convention.center.may.end.as.a.white.elephant..html)
By Cong B. Corrales
Of SunStar Cagayan de Oro

THE Cagayan de Oro Convention Center in Sitio Taguanao, Barangay Indahag, this city, is one of government infrastructure projects affected by the Supreme Court decision reverting the 105-hectare estate of Dona Josefina Graciano vda Neri into public land.

The fate of the still-unfinished convention center, supposed to be the pride of Cagayan de Oro, could hang in the balance just in the case of Lawndale Springs or Kagay-an Resorts, also in Sitio Taguanao.

But Willy Cuenca, chief of staff of Senator Aquilino Pimentel, is optimistic that they would no longer reapply for the ownership of the land where the convention center stood, unlike the City Government, which lost Lawndale Springs or Kagay-an Resorts.

Cuenca said the convention center is a project by the National Government who became the owner of the Neri estate by virtue of the High Court decision. Senator Pimentel, who hails from Cagayan de Oro, is the main endorser of the convention project.

Lawyer Maryanne Enteria, head of the city legal office, said the City Government is set to reapply at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Land Management for the land ownership of the Kagay-an Resort.

"Dili maapektahan ang convention center ana nga ruling kay national project man kana. Since the land is reverted to public land, the owner is the National Government," Cuenca told Sunstar Cagayan de Oro.

Associate Justice Leonardo Quisumbing ruled that the judicial title of the Neri estate did not pass through proper government processes "even bypassing the then-Bureau of Land and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources."

The High Court ordered the reversion of the estate into a public land rendering the land ownership of claimants including beneficiaries of the Department of Agrarian Reform in doubt.

Opposition lawyer Manuel Ravanera said the decision transformed the convention center and the Kagay-an Resort into "white elephants."

He said millions of pesos in taxpayers' money have gone to waste because of the lack of foresight by government planners.

"Gigastohan og ayo sa gobyerno pero wala gihapon paadtoan. Total waste kini sa kwarta sa katawhan," Ravanera said.

Cuenca, however, belied that the construction of the convention center is "a waste of taxpayers money."

He said funds for the project come "in trickles" because Senator Pimentel is a known opposition figure against the administration of President Gloria Arroyo.

"Hinay kaayo ang release sa pondo. Usahay putol-putol ang fund allocation," Cuenca said.

Cuenca said the Department of Public Works and Highways is the government agency tasked to construct the convention center.

Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro found no workers from the DPWH when it visited the construction site of the convention center in Sitio Taguanao.

Instead, there was only silence at the site and there was even a pile of firewood displayed for sale at its yard. A lone security guard watched over the premises, which was fenced with a sign "Do not enter restricted area."

DOWNSOUTH
by HERNANI DE LEON
Credit the resilience of Mindanaoans (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW090508/content.php?id=079)

DAVAO CITY — Two weeks after those merciless attacks on civilian communities in Lanao del Norte, the situation in most parts of Mindanao has been good.

It could be ironic but the military offensive that resulted in major dislocation of communities in the central part of the island is one reason for the stable condition in most provinces especially in urban centers.

The bigger credit, however, should go to the Mindanaoans who are historically resilient and proven survivors in times of crisis. Three important events — the 17th Mindanao Business Conference in Dipolog City, Kadayawan Festival in Davao City and Kagayan Festival in Cagayan de Oro City — were held without a hitch after the Lanao raids.

It is noteworthy that many participants to the business conference in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte had to pass by areas attacked by hard-line Moro commanders two weeks ago. Throughout the island, local chambers said it has been business-as-usual. It could take a few more days, however, to determine if big private sector plans in Mindanao will suffer delays or cancellation due to recent developments.

Initial feedback indicated a disruption of late in development programs on the island, but this is confined to projects in or near conflict areas. Representatives of foreign aid agencies, however, noted that work will only resume as soon as the situation improves.

The military field commanders’ decision for scaled-down operation starting this week with the observance of Ramadan is highly appreciated by civil society in general. Further attacks that may hurt Moro communities in Central Mindanao at this time could lead to bigger problems and could even spark further escalation of hostilities.

The bigger question, however, is what will happen next after the government’s decision to scrap the proposed agreement to create the Bangsamoro homeland? The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) has repeatedly stated it will not renegotiate the proposed agreement’s draft. If this stalemate is not resolved soon, there’s a possibility of full-scale hostilities erupting any time.

The latest bombing of a Davao Metro Shuttle Bus at the Digos City bus terminal should not be linked to recent attacks by rogue MILF units. This is an incident that could have been avoided if only security measures were followed by both bus personnel and security officers assigned in transport terminals.

The bus driver reportedly picked up passengers outside of the bus stations — in this case Davao City and Digos City where bags and others belongings of passengers entering the terminals are checked by soldiers. Such procedures have been agreed upon previously by law enforcement authorities and bus company operators.

Then again, inspections by soldiers in bus terminals all over Mindanao are so relaxed especially when rushing passengers start lining up. Authorities should review security procedures to include regular monitoring and assessment of inspection by assigned personnel. In the first place, passengers wouldn’t mind a few minutes’ delay in exchange for safe travel.

Criminal syndicates have been terrorizing civilians and businesses in Central Mindanao for years now. Law-enforcement agencies and even the MILF have failed to stop these criminals despite the damage they exact on local communities. Many are wondering how these outlaws remained active even at the height of the joint anti-crime initiative of the military and MILF two years ago.

Wireless communication in most parts of the highway between Davao Region and Northern Mindanao has been excellent since last year. My last trip to Cagayan de Oro City by bus two weeks ago was memorable since it was the first time I was able to surf the Net while travelling for hours without getting irritated. Images were stable on my laptop, driven by a small USB-hooked modem gadget now sold by cellphone companies.

Signal was generally good between Maramag in Bukidnon to Cagayan de Oro City. There were disconnections, however, along the Bukidnon-Davao highway’s mountainous portions and along the winding part of the highway between Malaybalay and Manolo Fortich in Bukidnon. It helps that the new tourist-class buses that serves the route are quite comfortable compared with the older air-conditioned units.

Traveling by bus from Davao to Cagayan de Oro, a distance of about 321.8 kilometers, is a lot cheaper and more comfortable compared to driving a car. Nonstop bus is best, although the fare is higher by about 25%, since it does not pick up passengers from the highways or from other terminals (only from the Davao and Cagayan de Oro bus stations) thereby limiting security risk. The highway view between Bukidnon and Davao City is the best in Mindanao and the road condition is excellent. The area between Davao City and Cagayan de Oro is probably the safest place in the island.

Bahandi dance group ready to go mainstream (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/09/05/life/bahandi.dance.group.ready.to.go.mainstream.html)
By Mark D. Francisco

BAHANDI, the ethnopop dance group that used to restrict itself into church-based engagements, has now gone mainstream.

Their latest presence to fame was their performance in one of the intermissions during the Miss Kagay-an 2008 coronation night last August 28.

In an interview with one of the group's members, 16-year-old Jocel Quimno, she said the group was formed in 2005 composed of high school students of Summer Hill School, a sectarian institution then known as Greentree School at Tejero Subdivision, Patag.

The original 30 members underwent a dance workshop with a Cagayan de Oro-based choreographer who was hired by Bread of Life Ministries, the church group which Greentree School was affiliated with.

The group was known then as Bai Lawanen, named after the local princess of old whose beauty and charm was without equal during her time.

Later, the group took on the apt title Taytayan and then to its present name Bahandi, the meaning of which is obvious.

Their music, all of them originally composed by Summer Hill School teacher Precy Madriaga, is influenced by the music of Pinikpikan, a nationally-known ethnic group.

At first, Bahandi performed periodically in gatherings of the Bread of Life Ministries, notably at Limketkai Cinema 4.

It was during these performances that pastors from their church headquarters in Manila took notice of the group.

Bahandi was then sent to grace the 25th anniversary of the Bread of Life Ministries in Yñares Center in Antipolo, Rizal in November 2007.

From then, the group has never looked back.

Jocel is now a freshman at Liceo de Cagayan University taking up BS Tourism majoring in Hotel and Restaurant Management.

Despite her hectic schedule, she still finds time to rehearse with the group, which is now composed of 14 dancers and nine band members, all of them part of the praise and worship team of the local Bread of Life Ministries.

Aside from their Miss Kagay-an 2008 stint, they also guested during the recent Charter Day celebrations in the city last June 9.

In its website, Bahandi stated that the main concept of their group is to show to other people the treasured history of Cagayan de Oro.

Jocel said their performance in Miss Kagay-an 2008 was one of the milestones of their group.

"The big boss of the prestigious companies here and in Manila were there, famous celebrities (like Angelika dela Cruz and Mark Herras) were also there and of course the press. They now know that our group existed," she remarked gleefully.

There's no turning back for Ms. Raphaelita Pelaez to pursue her proposed commercial complex in her own property at the vicinity of Kagay-an Bridge. She is already very determined and firm in her decision to be part of CdeO's phenomenal progression by bringing under her wing some big time businessmen and one of the well-known international architects, Mr. John Palafox. :)

The areas surrounding the Kagay-an Bridge and Puntod-Kauswagan Bridge are already converted into new commercial districts of Cagayan de Oro. The point is that CdeO's urban expansion is already expanding along with the city's real estate sector, which is booming even in the uptown areas of the city. ^^

I think CDeO considered as a "small/tiny" city is really a Misconception bec. in fact CDeO is one of the Largest Cities.

Source: National Statistical Coordination Board (2007)

I agree @ona. Truly a MISconception. :)

Based on my experience while traveling to other highly-urbanized cities in the country, I can say CdeO is fourth in terms of sprawling urban area after the already declared 3metropolitan cities.

At bakit? If "totoo man," ano naman ngayon? Baka nakalimutan na nila ang old "hysteria" regarding this 2nd largest island that still persists today according to thus who are ignorant. Instead of facing the GENERAL CRISIS, naging "ija-ija at aho-aho."

...na pag may nangyari sa ibang dapit, ay lahat na. Ano ba yan?

If I were "these two," pagtuonan ko nalang ng pansin ang nangyari mismo sa isang siyudad ng province nila na nangyari sa isang shuttle bus doon during Monday ba yun this week. "Dalawang beses na yata this year."

sorry for the delay. i was in zambo peninsula last week. in fact, i was there while i created ayala commercial complex. i arrived last night that was why i took the liberty of taking the photos earlier this afternoon. i know its already too late but i just want to show you what i got. i asked the people who worked there. when i asked who owns it, the man who works there replied that it is currently being surveyed by ayala. i added by asking if its possible that either a hotel or a mall or an arcade was to be put up there but he only said that he doesnt know. furthermore, he only said that the place is being surveyed by the ayalas. he didnt comment anymore. i dont know what that means but that's what he said.

With the proposed Convention Center by Golez Group in downtown, that white elephant will also lose his tusks....:ohno:

Heard from the news today, the Golez Group together with Architect Palafox will formally present to the City Council their Comemrcial Complex near Kagay-an Bridge....saan na kaya si @Farirah...kelan kaya sked nito?

Another info:

The recent study showed CDO needed 2,200 hotel rooms. So doing the math

2,200 = LKK (205) + Mallberry Expansion + Koresco Expansion + Pelaez-Golez 1 + Pelaez-Golez 2 + Pearlmont Expansion + _____ + _____ + _____ .....

^^
Pwede i-fill in ko kanang blank fields @GearX?:lol:Wag nalang, baka matawag na naman akong nagdaydreams... wait and see... Yung Tropical Hotel pala, ilang rooms yun?

I still believe na matapos pa rin yan...

am...Farirah, I don't know what's your beef with those 2 forumers, but that's too insensitive of you to laugh at bombings that claimed innocent lives. let's be sensitive to the family of those who died.
