Oro Chamber ICT Sponsors Quiz Show ("http://kagayandeoro.blogspot.com/2008/10/oro-chamber-ict-sponsors-iz-show.html)

Cagayan de Oro City - The quest for the best Information and Communication Technology (ICT) talent and school in Mindanao continues as the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber) held the 3rd Mindanao Tertiary Schools ICT Quiz Show last October 3 at the Atrium, Limketkai Center, this city.

Ateneo de Zamboanga which bagged the title last year aspired to keep the throne as they participated this year among the other schools which include the University of Immaculate Concepcion in Davao, Cagayan de Oro College (COC)-Phinma Education Network, Liceo de Cagayan University, AMA Computer Learning Center, ACSAT, Bukidnon State University, NORMISIST, University of Southwestern Philippines, MOSCAT and the Mindanao Polytechnic State College.

System analysis and design, networking, data structures, standards and policies, hardware, operating systems, programming languages and ICT trends and technology were the subject area that the students focused.

As Northern Mindanao is positioned to be the next ICT hub in the country, the quiz show has become one of the priority projects of the Oro Chamber which is aimed to showcase not only the students’ aptitude on ICT but also to promote their overall well-being through needed exposure trips and sharing of knowledge.

The half-day quiz show was one of the major highlights of the ORO BEST EXPO 2008. It happened right after the closing activity of the 1st Mindanao Resources Conference on ICT (1MRCi) slated last Oct.2-3 at the Grand Caprice Restaurant.

With the support of CHED 10, STI College CDO as a co-presenter and the Office of the Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao Hon. Jojo Pupos, the said quiz show was the answer to the common goal of the Oro Chamber, partner agencies and the academe of enhancing human resource skills and thus alleviate poverty. (Oro Chamber)

my cousin bought an ipod in Av room a few months back. so far, the cheapest I products in cdeo can de found in graphix. it was only a matter of hours that i found out that graphix sells the cheapest Ipod because it had a difference of 1000 bucks compared to AV room.

i think there are also other stores in malls here in cdeo that sell I products but i forgot their names.

North Mindanao jatropha growers find small market

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — While the government has been promoting biofuel crops, farmers in Northern Mindanao are lost as to where they could sell their produce after harvest.

Jatropha growers in the region now sell oil at low prices to local companies producing healing ointments because they don’t know where to go, said participants in techno-investment forum organized by the Department of Agriculture.

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, however, assured forum participants there is a big market for biofuel crops. "We only need an expeller to extract oil from these raw sources and we can sell to biofuel companies like Chemrez Technologies, Inc.," said Mr. Zubiri, an author of the Bioduels Act of 2006.

Mr. Zubiri said the government’s program may only need to improve on information dissemination to wipe away uncertainty among farmers who are now into biofuel crops.

Regional Agriculture officials could not cite exact jatropha hectarage in Northern Mindanao, but noted it could still be below 1,000 hectares.

An Agriculture department staff, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the same feedback from small-scale growers has been noted in other regional forums. The department’s Agribusiness unit, matches crop producers in the regions and the nearest commercial-scale buyers.

The forum held here was focused on production of sweet sorghum, which along with cassava and sugarcane, is an alternate ingredient for biodiesel.

Agriculture regional director Lealyn A. Ramos said sweet sorghum yields about 40 to 50 tons of stalks. The stalks are the part of the crop that produces oil for bioethanol.

Research on sweet sorghum that started last year at the Northern Mindanao Integrated Agricultural Research Center in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon, yielded promising initial results, especially since the crop thrives even in dry areas. — Geefe P. Alba

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — This city’s old water tower will be converted into a museum and archives center in time for the National Archives Day on Oct. 21.

Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula said the transformation of the old water tower into a rehabilitated structure will boost local tourism since it will showcase relevant historical and cultural documents of the city as well as Northern Mindanao.

Mr. Jaraula added that the tower is one of the oldest pre-war edifices in the region and by restoring it, this would revive the city’s rich history. The opening of the city’s new museum, he said, will further promote Cagayan de Oro and educate the new generation about the city’s past.

A highlight of the new museum is the reinforced viewing deck that will be placed atop the tower to provide a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. The passage to the view deck will involve a steel spiral staircase at the back of the tower.

An added feature of the project is the installation of glass-enclosed elevator on either side of the water tower to give a modern look and design for the convenience of visitors and residents. City Information Office spokesman Ian Fuentes said the budget for the restoration project is still being reviewed by the city’s finance department.

The city has been designated as Mindanao’s host for this year’s National Archives Day. The event is a joint effort of the city government and the executive council of the National Archives Committee led by Monsignor Rey Manuel S. Monsanto of the Cagayan de Oro archdiocese. — Penny Lyn P. Cunanan

my cousin bought an ipod in Av room a few months back. so far, the cheapest I products in cdeo can de found in graphix. it was only a matter of hours that i found out that graphix sells the cheapest Ipod because it had a difference of 1000 bucks compared to AV room.

i think there are also other stores in malls here in cdeo that sell I products but i forgot their names.

There's a small stall near Jollibee which I think is named I-shop... They sell I-pods purely... Q Lifestyle Center at JR Borja has a wide array of Apple products for sale... :-)

Against the odds (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW100808/content.php?id=079)

DAVAO CITY — For several months, the hottest topic discussed at this city’s coffee shops was the surprisingly strong demand for high-rise residential condominium units. Started by D. M. Consunji, Inc. two years ago, the playing field now includes other Manila-based developers who are also into resort and shopping mall ventures.

From latest feedback, however, conversations have shifted to competition in retail trade where at least one homegrown firm — taking an aggressive stance — has decided not to be left behind when the big boys from the National Capital Region open their new malls starting next year.

In the first quarter of 2009, J. G Summit will inaugurate shopping mall Robinsons Cybergate, two years ahead of Abreeza, an Ayala-Floirendo joint project targeting the high-income segment. SM Prime is looking at a second shopping complex in Lanang district, about eight kilometers north of downtown and at least 10 kilometers from the existing SM City Davao.

Quietly, however, DSG Sons Group, Inc., one of the two branches of Cebu’s Gaisano family based in this city, is expanding Gaisano Mall of Davao, once Mindanao’s largest. DSG’s mall, which had a floor area of roughly 100,000 square meters when it opened in the late 1990s, is doubling floor space by yearend, and could triple the current size should the Ayala and the new SM malls open three years from now.

Construction of the seven-level south wing expansion of the Gaisano Mall of Davao is now on the fifth level and work is round-the-clock to meet the target opening before yearend. The facility is similar to the Limketkai family’s response in Cagayan de Oro City a couple of years back when SM Prime constructed a shopping mall in the area.

Before SM City Cagayan de Oro could open, Limketkai embarked on a major rehabilitation effort that included an upscale look and doubling of available space in the shopping mall. With that move, Limketkai Center has remained Cagayan de Oro’s top shopping destination and has maintained a significant edge over its competitors.

A free market competition prevails here and in Cagayan de Oro. In other Mindanao cities, outsiders who intend to invest big and eventually dominate their fields are met with hostile competitors ready with barriers that could include shutting out the best sites available to outright rejection of the project proposal by the local legislature.

POF venue upgrading now halfway through (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/10/08/sports/pof.venue.upgrading.now.halfway.through.html)

MASSIVE rehabilitation work at the 33-year-old Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center in Cagayan de Oro City has been going on, for more than three months now, to pave the way for the staging of the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival and National Championships the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental will be hosting on December 11 to 16, this year.

While putting up an eight-lane synthetic surface track oval as the main objective, the host Provincial Government cannot do away with the football field within the standard running track. Besides, to maintain the state-of-the-start rubberized oval, the rainwater that could accumulate on the football grounds must be efficiently drained. Even the circumferential road inside the complex which, at present, is sand-and-gravel, must be eventually be concreted to minimize the dusts.

What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers

"This is not easy," Misamis Oriental Governor Oscar S. Moreno admits in media interviews.

But, Moreno is optimistic he could generate enough support, stressing the transformation of the sports center would directly benefit the city of Cagayan de Oro, hence he has already received a P3-million commitment from Representative Rufus Rodriguez of the city's second congressional district.

The same was also pledged to him by Representative Yevgeny Vincent Emano of the first district of Misamis Oriental and Representative Rolando "Klarex" Uy of the first congressional district of Cagayan de Oro.

Before the upgrading work started, the estimated figure was P30 million.

He said he is hoping the City Government of Cagayan de Oro will also share part of the cost of rehabilitation of the sports center, which is being managed by a council whose members are representatives of the Provincial Government of Misamis Oriental, the City Government of Cagayan de Oro, and the Department of Education (DepEd).

Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center, formerly known as Marcos Sports Center, was the venue for Palarong Pambansa in 1975, 1978 and 1988 as well as two international sports events on track and field and softball, according to Megdonio Llamera, secretary of the Integrated Sports Development Council that oversees the management and operation of the sports complex.

Llamera, a retired regional head for physical education and school sports of the DepEd, was one of the organizers of the three Palarong Pambansa that were held in Cagayan de Oro.

"We used to have the best sports facilities, outside Metro Manila, at that time," the former national baseball team member recalled.

For the moment, personnel from the provincial engineering office, backed by the sports center maintenance personnel, are engaged in varied civil works -- scraping the oval and the football field, laying down the boxed culverts, backfilling and compacting.

As of this writing Tuesday, the asphalting work of the oval has already been completed. This, after the drainage system has been put in place. Once the asphalt has attained its ideal maturity, the synthetic rubber will then be overlaid over the 4,584-square-meter oval.

Experts from the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will then conduct an inspection of the entire rehabilitation work whether the synthetic surface track oval would be within the international standards as well as the other facilities which include, among others, the Olympic-sized swimming pool, boxing gym, tennis and pelota courts, basketball and volleyball courts.

By then, the sports center will be ready for the national sporting event -- the 3rd Philippine Olympic Festival and National Championships -- which will be held in Mindanao for the first time.

Over 100 kiddies set to duel it out (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/10/08/sports/over.100.kiddies.set.to.duel.it.out.html)
By Lynde Salgados

THREE more days to go and over 100 young pawnpushers in the locality will duel it out in the 1st Ace Hardware Youth Chess Challenge at the Inilog Grill in Cagayan de Oro City.

To go along with the cash prizes, trophies and medals, the local outlet of Time Life/Filway has donated additional take home for the champion in 14-under kiddies category in the form of 1001 Questions & Answers World of Knowledge book worth P1,500.

"This is our humble contribution to youth chess development in Cagayan de Oro. You know, "hot" is very supportive to chess in the country ever since," said Oro Time Life manager Nelson Verdote, referring to his big boss Hector "Chito" O. Tagaysay -- the man behind the mercurial rise of Grandmaster Mark Paragua -- who is also contemplating to bring the "Wesley So Act" in the City of Golden Friendship in the near future.

Now 15 years old, the phenomenal So was recently regarded as the youngest Grandmaster in the world.

The organizing Metro Cagayan de Oro Chess Club (MCCC) ensures success of the two-day chessfest also being supported by Dr. Renato Naranjo of the Inilog Grill, Goldcrest Marketing, Stan Flora of Ajinomoto, Jovencio Pangilinan of the Water District and the City Mayor's Office through Jigs Jaraula by putting medal awards up to the 25th finisher in the kiddies division.

"Focus kita sa development sa mga bata kay wala na kitay ma-asahan kon didto kita sa mga tigulang," officials of the MCCC club were one in saying.

The top-three kiddie winners will get P700, P500 and P300 each plus trophies.

While the top-three juniors (20 yrs and below) will go home P1,000, P700 and P500 richers also with beautiful trophies.

Among the special category prizes are the top-three 12-under, 10-under, 8-under and top 5 female finishers in kiddies level and the top 16-under and top 3 females in junior division.

Depending on one's performance, even the best top-8 under player will have an equal chance to pocket the major cash prizes in the 14-under section. A unique format that will also apply in the junior rivalry.

"Bibo kaayo ni nga padula kuyaw lang kon manobra ang participants kay mag problema kita pag-accomodate," said tournament director Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon who will be assisted by chief arbiter Leo Dinglasan, secretariat WNM Cecile Cuizon and stewards Johnnel Balquin, Emmanuel Crisologo and Alberto Bullo, among others, in running the show.

Entry fees are pegged at P125 for juniors (with chess set P100 only) and P75 for kiddies (P50 only with chess set).

Oro Media invited to presscon for indie film "Hunghong sa Yuta" (http://www.kagay-an.com/articles.php?key=371)

By Mike Banos

The Brothers of the Sacred Heart based in Matina, Davao City is inviting members of the local media to a press conference at the Sunriva Restaurant 10:30am to 12:00 noon on Saturday, October 11, 2008 regarding the indie film "HUNGHONG SA YUTA".

Bro. Levie O. Requilme said the press conference is in preparation for the sneak preview of Arnel Mardoquio's film about war and peace in Mindanao scheduled later the same day at the Xavier University Little Theatre from 3:00-5:00pm. The preview is intended for tri-media partners, heads of schools, government and non-government organizations, the private sector and other groups advocating for peace.

In his invitation to Cagayan de Oro Press Club President Jerry Orcullo, Requilme said the sneak preview is in preparation for the Peace Advocacy Mission and Campaign which aims to show the film to all sectors of society.

Bro. Joe P. Palabao said the premier screening of "HUNGHONG SA YUTA" has been scheduled for the second week of December 2008 at SM Cinema, Cagayan de Oro City.

In a film review published in a national broadsheet, Bienvenido Lumbera, National Artist for Literature, wrote: "What distinguishes it from the usual advocacy project is the meticulous care given by the director and his staff, and the passion and excellence of the finished project."

In a column entitled "War and Peace in a Movie," noted female columnist and feminist Rina Jimenez-David decribes how Mardoquio made the movie with a single camera and under harsh conditions. Despite these, she found the movie "unexpectedly engrossing, moving and entertaining.

When she asked Mardoquio if the violence in the movie was somehow off-putting in a movie about peace, the director said that to him "the message of the movie is also about the ugliness of war," especially the fact that often the biggest victims are civilians, especially children, and that to get across the cruelty of armed violence, he needed to show it in all its horror.

"I believe only a Mindanawan can make a movie about the conflict in Mindanao," Mardoquio said.

HUNGHONG SA YUTA is an advocacy project of the Brothers of the Sacred Heart Youth Ministry under the leadership of Bro. Noelvic Deloria SC. in cooperation with Lozadren Foundation and Sky Phoenix Production.

Russell Thompkins & The New Stylistics: People Make the World Go Round (http://www.kagay-an.com/articles.php?key=375)

By The Night Stalker

Producer, Arranger and Composer Thom Bell (along with Kenny Gamble & Leon Huff) was one of the primary architects of the so-called "The Sound of Philadephia" (also known as T.S.O.P. or Philadephia Soul) which became extremely popular during the early and mid-seventies.

Bell's carried over the vocal groups from the sixties and sweetened their sound with horns and strings more lush and sultry than the soul that came before it. The textures in the sound were also more distinctive and did away with much of the heavy reverb and "Wall of Sound" popularized by Phil Spector during the prior era. The rich vocal harmonies of the groups that fronted it all were most often identified with The Spinners, The O'Jays and
The Stylistics.

Many may argue which of the three were the best at the Philly Soul but there's no argument that The Stylistics were the best hit makers of the three with 12 straight Top Ten hits from '71 to '74. "Betcha By Golly, Wow" and "You Make Me Feel Brand New" were tunes most everyone were familiar with. Even though they were a five-voice group, it was that velvety smooth falsetto of Russell Thompkins, Jr. that carried out Bell's vision for
ultra-seductive soul to perfection.

The song continues to stand out even today. "People Make The World Go Round" from their self-titled 1971 album was an artistic high point for Bell, his lyricist Linda Creed and Thompkins. Bell made Thompkins the only vocalist for this track and with his female-like falsetto combined with the heavily staccatoed lyrical lines (which Thompkins just sails right through) gives this song the same vibe as Dionne Warwick singing a Bacharach/David tune.
Almost like a slowed-down "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?"

Creed provides some contemporary social commentary that sound more of its time in spots but pulls the everyday tapestry all together in the timeless theme of those little things the people do that "make the world go 'round."

Yeah, it might sound a little goofy on paper, but Thompkins' precise delivery gives makes it work.

The Stylistics took the song to no.6 on the R&B singles chart and no.25 on the Hot 100 in the US in 1972.

Something that involves so much craftsmanship and was part of some of R&B's most influential music is not lightweight stuff at all. In 1975, Freddie Hubbard covered "People Make the World Go Round" on CTI Records with a killer line-up that included Lenny White on drums, Hubert Laws on Flute, Ron Carter on Bass, George Cables on piano, and the great Bob James arranging.

Earlier, Micohael Jackson also recorded his version for his solo album, Ben, issued in August 1972 in the US and December 1972 in the UK. Other notable artists who covered the hit included Angela Bofill, Cleveland Eaton, Freddie Hubbard, Hortense Ellis, Innerzone Orchestra, O'Donel Levy, Marc Dorsey, Marcus Miller, Michael Jackson, Milt Jackson, Now Generation, Paperclip People, Ramon Morris, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Raven Symone and Ruddy Thomas.

"People Make the World Go Round" was used also by Director Spike Lee in the soundtrack for his movie, Crooklyn, made in 1994.

Get a chance to relive "People Make The World Go Round" and the golden memories of T.S.O.P. when Russell Thompkins Jr. and the New Stylistics close out their Philippine Tour in Cagayan de Oro at the Atrium, Limketkai Center on October 27, 2008.

To be mounted by Renen de Guia's Ovation Productions, the tour gets rolling on Oct 24 at Araneta Center in Manila, Oct. 25 at the Cebu Waterfront Hotel, Cebu City; Oct. 26 at the LaSalle Coliseum, Bacolod City; and finally on Oct. 27 at the Limketkai Atrium, Cagayan de Oro City.

In Cagayan de Oro City, The Russell Thompkins, Jr. and The New Stylistics show is (delete --produced by Renen de Guia's Ovation Productions and) supported by The Gold Star Daily, Parasat Cable TV, Bigby's Caf, Images, and The Park Cafe.

Tickets are priced at P1,500, P1,200, P800 and P500 and are now available at select ticket outlets around the city. For inquiries and reservations, call the 24/7 ticket hotline 856-4444.

Stoppage vs Oro restobar lifted (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/10/08/news/stoppage.vs.oro.restobar.lifted.html)

CITY Hall has lifted a stoppage order against an entertainment establishment punished for noise pollution and nuisance.

"Only In Cagayan," a trendy restaurant cum bar popularly know as OIC, was shut down sometime in August after the owner repeatedly ignored City Hall warnings to minimize the "excessive" noise emitted by its live band performances.

Acting on the complaints from OIC 's neighboring homes along Corrales Avenue and Ebarle Street, the Regulatory and Complaints Board (RCB) had earlier directed the establishment to install soundproof devices.

Under the city's Codified Ordinance, any form of entertainment that emits noise karaoke, band performances, etc. is prohibited beyond 10 o'clock in the evening, unless it is sound proof to reduce noise pollution.

The complainants, according to RCB, expressed anger that the establishment had repeatedly breached previous compromise agreements on the issue. In their complaint the residents said the "excessive noise" had caused them sleepless nights and affected them "mentally and physically."

The lifting of the stoppage order came when OIC owner Jefferson U. Rolida gave his word and promise to honor the terms of the agreement he reached with the RCB.

Under the agreement, acoustic band or any musical instrument and sound system that would discharge noise pollution shall not be played beyond 10 o'clock in the evening.

Rolida also agreed to hold in an enclosed and soundproof space when hosting special occasions that shall go on beyond the 10 p.m. allowed time to play musical instruments and sound system.

The OIC owner also agreed to coordinate with the barangay watchmen and/or Roads and Traffic Administration personnel for the orderly and systematic departure of customers and vehicles in order not to disturb the neighborhood. (CIO/Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro)

TEAM ORO were the official photographers and videographers of the Miss Teen Philippines 2008. we were still not a group by then and it was during that time that we worked with each other as we were still affiliated with different business organizations. the chemistry really clicked and soon after a great bond among all us was formed. out of inspiration, i drew a caricature drawing of the group and never expected that we would really team up to continue even after the event, thus TEAM ORO was formed. equipped with our cameras and videos, we soon then started to do projects aiming to really boom the industry in photography and videography here in Cagayan de Oro...one of our mission is to really promote the artists here in Cagayan. with Friendship as our foundation, we collaborated to make our jobs easy and fun at the same time. :)

we are now currently doing photo and video coverage projects around Cagayan de Oro City...

Cagayan De Oro City, Longing Love (http://gregg003.blogspot.com/2008/09/cagayan-de-oro-city-longing-love.html)

Cagayan De Oro, the city of Golden Friendship is located along the northern coastline of Mindanao, Philippines. It is the regional center and a booming city both for business and pleasure. Ever since I've graduated from high school way back in 1997, their have been many developments in this city, I was actually amazed by it, knowing how this city looks like 10 years ago and to what it had become right now, really breathtaking. I would even say it developed faster than Cebu City and Davao City.^^

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCRHWZjqSI/AAAAAAAAAZA/YhLbudNKwk0/s1600/Cagayan%2BDe%2BOro.jpg

I'm going to discuss how to access this city in my upcoming blogs, for now let us enjoy the scenery of the city, far and beyond.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFB88KuH3wI/AAAAAAAAAXo/Pl2jnBFF228/s320/ABCD0003.JPG

The city's seat of power, the Cagayan De Oro City Hall. Don't be deceived, the facade, inset picture is just the tip of the iceberg. If your wondering how the city works with just this small two story building, mark my work, it does, the secret is inside, visit this place to find out.

http://bp2.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFB_yQdL1hI/AAAAAAAAAXw/dAChKbZUZk4/s320/Gaston+Park.jpg

Gaston Park, a city landmark. Located just a few steps away form the City Hall and from the Saint Agustine Cathedral. This place have been a major destination for people who wants to relaxed during weekends, the huge fountain explains it all.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCBs0nnUtI/AAAAAAAAAX4/K2UifLC4E0E/s320/Divisoria+00.jpg

Plaza Divisoria, another important city landmark. This park was dedicated to national heroes of the country with several statue erected. Nowadays, this park is famous being the venue of Night Market, a weekend overnight shopping event. Being surrounded by food chains, banks, coffee shops among others, this place became a people magnet.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCEeQm5vvI/AAAAAAAAAYA/Xpgssupwl_E/s320/St+Augustine+Cathedral.jpg

San Agustine Cathedral, the city's spiritual center, majority of the people here are Roman Catholics which comprises for about 75% of the total population.

Shopping:

http://bp3.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCF4snj9BI/AAAAAAAAAYI/XGLoD5AZVtc/s320/ABCD0011.JPG

The city's Biggest Mall in terms of leasable area, The Limketkai Mall. The mall houses the Plaza Fair Department Store and the Robinson's Department Store. The city has several big malls. Shopping will never be a problem in this city. Inset image is the facade..Huge and Accessible.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCIrZX5JdI/AAAAAAAAAYY/a3X2Q7bgZY0/s320/Image013.jpg

Inside Limketkai Mall, Attractive and Colorful, Huge Space.

http://bp1.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFEFdbnJ83I/AAAAAAAAAbQ/ptSG1WuZKT8/s200/ABCD0010.JPG

The Grand Caprice, one of the most expensive chinese fine dining restaurant in the city. Grand, For Rich People Only, To Unreachable.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFEE5NKEkwI/AAAAAAAAAbI/uv80PQs9tyA/s200/ABCD0016.JPG

Robinson's Cagayan De Oro, an extension to the Limketkai Mall yet different and unique. Stands with his own style, with his own prowess.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCJIucwOmI/AAAAAAAAAYg/KvLRwqgevYQ/s320/ABCD0002.JPG

Another big mall that shoppers will droll about, Gaisano City Mall, their were several Gaisano Malls in the city, 4 to be exact and this was their biggest. Accessible and Cheap.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCJz-XGFYI/AAAAAAAAAYo/4AsAeuAH7aQ/s200/ABCD0008.JPG

Inside the Gaisano City Mall, Small and Full.

http://bp0.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCLh0wPJuI/AAAAAAAAAYw/kvZySgVkbDE/s200/ABCD0013.JPG

Ororama Megacenter, the lost glory. Once known to be one of the best in the city, now it houses small shops that were selling fake DVD, cellphones, among others. Quite disturbing this place have become. Old and Fake Haven.

http://bp3.blogger.com/_EFUudZV0n08/SFCRvO9NEvI/AAAAAAAAAZI/V0dSVswRyMY/s200/200px-Smcdo.jpg

SM City Cagayan De Oro, the countries premier mall. Far and Famous. I will be featuring more images of this mall as well as the early mentioned in my upcoming blogs under Love Malls.

Among the other tourist attraction of the city are the White Water Rafting along the Cagayan De Oro River. Malasag Ecotourism Village, nature at its best, Macahambus Cave and Gorge, an underground cave with circular gorge, breathtaking and picturique among others.

Definitely a must see place..

Tsada Kagay-an :cheers::cheers:

Ang panget naman sa comment para sa Ororama, "the lost glory" daw. Murag Makati Square na diay kini. Pero taympa, i think Ororama Supercenter Cogon is doing well. Kinsa kaha ang pwede makasulod sa Ororama Mega ug sa Supercenter para makakuha ug pictures, I like their ceilings...:cheers::cheers: I owe it to someone who can fill my request... Thanks.

IBM was the first PC, kalaban ng Macintosh (Mac). so lahat ng clones such as HP, Gateway, Dell etc are called PCs. may history kasi dyan, ninakaw ni Bill Gates and idea ng Apple at binenta sa IBM then gumawa sila ng kalabang produkto which is the PC.

Rufus coordinates P3-million initiative for BMBE in CDO (http://www.kagay-an.com/articles.php?key=373)

By Mike Banos

Rep. Rufus Rodriguez of the city's 2nd congressional district disclosed last weekend an additional P3-million assistance for Barangay Micro Business Enterprises (BMBE) will be soon be forthcoming from his Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

Rodriguez made the disclosure during a presentation on "Policy Support Mechanism for BMBEs" at the 3rd Northern Mindanao BMBE Conference attended by some 160 aspiring entrepreneurs from Cagayan de Oro's 80 barangays.

"I have successfully lobbied in congress for an additional P500 million for the One Barangay, One Product (OBOP) of the Department of Trade and Industry," Rodriguez said. "This will an additional P2-million for OBOP in Cagayan de Oro in addition to the P500,000 we had for this calendar year, of which P250,000 is still available under the OBOP."

Rodriguez said he has also wangled an additional P1-million which will be used to revive the Pasalubong Center which was closed down two years ago.

"With all the products we are developing under DTI's OTOP (One Town, One Product) and OBOP programs, we don't have a place where these entrepreneurs can display their products since our Pasalubong Center closed down two years ago," he said.

In the launching of the ORO BEST EXPO 2008 Thursday, Rodriguez stressed the urgency of developing new business enterprises in the grassroots.

"In Cagayan de Oro, we have the OBOP- One Barangay, One Product program wherein we encourage all barangays, especially the women sector to come up with unique products to showcase their respective barangays. In our effort to ensure a good business plan, we have partnered five of our biggest barangays with the OroChamber to have trainings and quality assessments to produce products that are of world caliber," he said in a prepared speech read by OroChamber Trustee Fe Juarez.

The solon said 21 products launched recently during the recent Kahimunan Trade Fair by the DTI have received great reviews.

"This is our chance to give people in the barangays additional income and allow them to share in the economic progress of the city," he said. "It excites me to know that we are giving the opportunity to small business, specifically the barangay units, to be major players in the city's economy."

Promoting micro businesses at the grassroots is a sure sign of progress since it generates employment and other opportunities even in the smallest of barangays.

There used to be way back in the early 90's... I had to attend my cousin's wedding in Tacurong, Sultan Kudarat... We took the plane (PAL) to Davao... We stayed overnight... Early the next morning, we travelled ay land... We stopped over Gen San for an early lunch... Then, we proceeded to our destination... Before I get carried away and tell you the details of my cousin's wedding, let me get back on the right track... He! He! He! The flight was about 25 minutes... We had to take this very long route because during that time, the road networks of Mindanao were still not vehicle friendly... Nowadays, travelling by land is comfortable na kaayo... :-)

A standing ovation greeted him after his speech... CdO is small... So, if CdO grows 2x, it will still be small compared to Cebu or Davao... However, the rate of its growth is twice its original value... If the same growth is enjoyed by a bigger city, the growth will only 1.5x or even lower... You get what I mean, Guys? Math lang ba... It's easier for a small city to grow because of the fact that it is small... Understand? :-)

di ko makacomment sa Iligan kay dili ko kaayo current sa road dinha...
ang maingon lang nako, highway sa Gensan-Marbel, Gensan-Saranggani (both very impressive), road going to Kidapawan, and yes, Tacurong National Highway is very impressive. gwapo kaayo.

ganun na nga

say company A's value is 1000 and company B's value is 100 then company A grew by 200 and company B grew by 150

then 20% ra ang growth ni A but B grew by 150%..growth rate wise, mas dako jud si B kay gamay ra man ang original value.although A is still bigger

nevertheless, maliit man, we should not discount B kasi nga maganda ang performance nya

Sample growth rate:

Place A 1000 (year 1) 1010 (year 2)
Place B 300 (year 1) 600 (year 2)

Place A growth rate is 0.01%; low growth rate but higher collection bracket in units.

^^OK lang @GearX. Apple doesnt refer their computer as PC. IBM was the first PC, kalaban ng Macintosh (Mac). so lahat ng clones such as HP, Gateway, Dell etc are called PCs. may history kasi dyan, ninakaw ni Bill Gates and idea ng Apple at binenta sa IBM then gumawa sila ng kalabang produkto which is the PC.

ive heard about this. from what ive known, it was apple's idea about the windows program. bill gates took advantage of this idea and made a deal with another company. thats how windows was created. in short, it wasnt really gate's idea but apple. thats why apple is mad at microsoft. is it true that microsoft now owns apple? or microsoft bought only some shares of apple?

Don't forget the new aircon buses of Super 5 plying the CdO-Iligan-CdO route... Gwapo sad, Bai... The King-Longs of RTMI plying the same route should be King-Short kay mugbo kaayo... Only 8 rows instead of the 13 in the regular King-Longs... By the way, the new Super 5 Buses (Yutong, Higer, etc...) are really fast... It takes it only 1hr & 15mins to arrive to Iligan from CdO... Paspas kaayo! I went to Ozamis man gud last weekend! Cheers for Mindanao's public utility bus industry... :-)

By Danilo Adorador III (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/06/04/news/paying.homage.to.wrong.hero.html)

GENERATIONS of government officials and residents have paid homage to the statue bearing a bolo and a flag at the center of Divisoria Park, thinking it is the national hero Andres Bonifacio.

But these officials and maybe all of us, Kagay-anons, are barking on a wrong hero when we bring those flowers and wreaths to the statue especially on National Heroes Day.

The Cagayan de Oro Historical Commission said Tuesday the statue is not an image of the national hero Andres Bonifacio but a tribute to the fallen Kagay-anon revolutionaries who died fighting the Americans at the Battle of Agusan Hill on May 14, 1900 in present-day Barangay Agusan during the Philippine-American War.

Paulita Roa, a member of the Cagayan de Oro Historical Commssion, said the bones of the dead Kagay-anon revolutionaries are buried among the rocks that line below the statue.

"The monument is a tribute to the local revolutionaries who died during the Battle of Agusan Hill. At the back of the monument is a box containing the bones of our local heroes," Roa told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro.

She said a Spanish inscription at the foot of the statue "El Pueblo A Sus Heroes" is proof that the statue is not Bonifacio but an artist interpretation of the fallen Kagay-anon heroes.

Roa said "El Pueblo A Sus Heroes" means "From the town to its heroes" -- an endearing tribute of Cagayan de Oro to its heroes.

"Actually the monument has no name, and everything but the history surrounding it, is lost in time," she said.

Roa said the monument was built in 1930s under the administration of the late Mayor Lucio Ramos.

Generations later, Kagay-anons have forgotten all about the monument and have erroneously mistaken the statue of that of Andres Bonifacio.

"Sukad sa akong pagkabata, nailhan na man g'yud nako na nga monumento ni Bonifacio," Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said.

Acting Regional Director Becky Esguerra of Philippine Information Agency (PIA) said she had known since her childhood that the monument was Bonifacio.

"Kang Bonifacio man gyud na, ug mao na pud na ang akong nahibaw-an kay ang balay sa akong lola diha man duol sa gitukoran karon sa Dunkin'," Esguerra said.

Barangay 23 chair Jaime Joshua Frias said he only learned that the monument was not Bonifacio when his history teacher told his class in college.

"When I was a child and even during my high school days, I thought the statue was really carved after Andres Bonifacio," Frias said.

"People mistake it as Bonifacio because the katipunero was also carrying a bolo. However, our local heroes during the Philippine-American War also carried bolos," he added.

The Cagayan de Oro Historical Commission is pushing to officially name the statue as "Monument to the Agusan Hill Heroes."

TALK OF THE TOWN
Lessons from US financial crisis

By Edsel L. Beja Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:39:00 10/04/2008

Everyone is following what US authorities are doing to resolve their financial mess. No doubt, the financial crisis is the most serious financial disturbance in the United States since the Great Depression.

It may turn out to be the most serious economic disturbance in its history. But what I wish to do is to focus on how the financial mess came about.

Back to the future

The Great Depression is a useful starting point. The financial collapse of the 1930s led to a rethinking about financial markets. There was a decision that never again would the United States allow another financial collapse. The Glass-Steagall Act of 1933 and similar legislations were designed to discipline the financial markets through the separation of commercial and investment activities. So the financial system as a whole was made to promote production, increase wages, create jobs, reduce poverty, etc. This period went well for a while from the late 1940s to the 1960s.

The economic tremors in the 1970s knocked down “managed capitalism.” Recall the breakdown of the fixed exchange rate regime, two oil price shocks, wayward government deficits, interest rate hikes, stagflation, global economic recession and the debt crises.

Right-wing economics

This period saw the convergence of right-wing economics and right-wing politics to extol the virtues of the unregulated markets and despised any form of government intervention. Markets always worked because they are rational, self-reproducing and self-regulating. Serious adjustments were therefore made on institutions created in the early 20th century that were found wanting with respect to unregulated markets.

It is important to see that the adjustments since the 1970s were increasingly being focused on the “secondary problems” of markets, meaning market operations through the use of prices. The “primary problems” of markets—structures and institutions needed for market development—were set aside.

It was enough to assume that deregulation and liberalization generated a demand for sound structures and institutions. It was enough to diversify risk and market operations that guaranteed high profits.

In the context of the US financial crisis, US authorities and market players basically overlooked the integrity of their financial system. After all, the United States had the most advanced financial markets. The optimism became hubris as financial success created an impression of the impossibility of failure. The Great Depression was seen as an isolated incident.

How to build a crisis

In the late 1990s, the United States ended the all-system regulation of its financial markets with the repeal of, among others, the Glass-Steagall Act. Even before the 1990s, derivatives and most complex financial instruments were not regulated at all; in other words, off balance sheet transactions.

Advances in computing, information processing, and financial know-how drove the expansion and the sophistication of US financial markets. They became bigger, more complex, more confident, more aggressive and more powerful than before.

Let me raise one implication at this point. The financial mess wobbled the US financial system to threaten a financial collapse, even an economic crisis. Thus, this crisis showed that unregulated financial markets are not durable and do not promise long-term benefits even in the most advanced economy. For the economies with less advanced financial systems, there is indeed an embedded wisdom to a precautionary approach to deregulation and liberalization.

Keynes, Marx

The US financial crisis reminds us to once again look at structures, institutions and production, bring in dimensions like uncertainty and systemic risks (John Maynard Keynes) and understand how their interactions have important effects on economic performance and people’s lives.

“Fictitious commodities” (Karl Polanyi) do not produce the food, the jobs, the clothes, the houses, etc., that people need. “Fictitious capital” (Karl Marx) does not produce the “real commodities” unless finance is conducted to do exactly that because finance demands to be free, to do whatever it desires, and to go wherever it wishes.

Part of the recollection is to show how to make finance take root in the economy so it actually supports production.

The transformations in the US financial system point to the origins of the financial mess. Recall that in conventional banking, banks extended loans to households and businesses. If borrowers defaulted on loans, banks suffered. In short, there were strong incentives to ensure that good loans were made.

Originate, distribute

What happened in the 1990s was that the United States shifted from conventional banking to the so called “originate-and-distribute” system. Banks issued loans as before; but, in the new system, banks had others or themselves [if they had enough capitalization] package loans into sophisticated financial products called “mortgage-backed securities” or “collateralized debt obligations,” which were then sold to investment banks, to hedge funds, to insurance companies, etc.

Notice that the issuer of loans need not be the holder of loans. In short, there was no strong incentive to make good loans. With no strong regulations or monitors, transactions continued, expanded, accelerated and went out of hand.

Rating agencies

There was a perverse incentive to create more securities, sell them off in the capital markets, get bigger fees and bonuses, and then redo the process all over again. Why should market players worry about defaults when they got their big fees and bonuses already? And “Big Brother” was not watching anyway.

The rating agencies contributed to the whole cycle, too. The business of rating agencies is rating securities and related financial instruments and that is fundamentally linked to the volume of selling and underwriting of financial products.

Insurance derivatives

Put simply, those who sold the debt securities, collateralized debt obligations, insurance derivatives, and so on got rating agencies to rate their financial products. The perverse incentive was to give these financial products very high ratings to earn more.

Meanwhile, sustained capital flows provided easy finance that, in turn, supported the expansion of the US financial markets. Aggregate factors like the current account deficits that required the United States to “borrow” $2 billion each day from the rest of the world, a historic low US savings, and an expensive US war against terror need to be considered to see the macroeconomic health.

But do not discount the fact that capital flows into the United States were sustained because economies elsewhere enjoyed large capital surpluses and they did not know what to do with them beyond setting aside some precautionary amounts as ammunition against financial attacks.

And do not discount the fact that the United States offered high returns on the capital. Nonetheless, the view remained that the US financial markets were very strong because of their high profitability.

Nonrecourse debt

As competition intensified, more loans were extended to people who did not have the capacity to pay loans. Because housing loans were “nonrecourse debts,” there was a big problem right from the start.

It is easy to understand why loans need to be backed by collateral. In the case of the US subprime lending, the collateral was the house. Nonrecourse debt means that, in case of default, the recovery is limited to the mortgaged property. The rest of the borrower’s assets are not covered by the mortgage.

In short, it is possible for the borrower to return the mortgage then walk away. Indeed, since the housing bubble burst in 2007, more and more people walked away. There was a perverse incentive to not make good on loans. In the meantime, housing loans skyrocketed and US average income fell by $2,000 from its 1999 level.

Nobody wanted to raise warnings. Market players discounted the signs, too. There was a strong incentive that more money was made as financial products became riskier.

Even if a lot of bad financial products were sent out, market players still got their big fees and bonuses and companies made huge profits. If financial markets had a “correction,” market players got their money anyway. Why bother?

Financial casino

Besides, insurance was available against defaults, which are called “credit-default swaps” or insurance derivatives. Simply, if I made a loan to someone, I then purchased insurance on that loan to cover losses in case the loan went bad. Analysts pointed out that insurance derivatives market exploded from $5 trillion early in the 21st century to $60 trillion in 2006-2007, or 10 times the size of all US corporate debts. It suggested a “financial casino” in insurance derivatives.

It is now known that the problem in the US financial markets was spread to other parts of the world. European and Asian banks and financial institutions experienced large losses because they were unable to recover exposures in, say, US housing loans extended under nonrecourse setup.

As house values fell—and expected to still fall in the medium term—the prospects of recovery became dim. With companies caught in problematic financial products, the toxin in the United States was sent to infect others, including some banks and financial institutions in the Philippines.

Huge cost

One way to get an idea of the impact of a financial crisis is to look at past studies. In my research on the impact of the 1997 Asian crisis, I estimated the cost in the Philippines at $53 for each Filipino as of 2007. In short, the cost remains unrecovered.

Other economies in Asia faced bigger costs. Past studies also inform us that an economic crash produces bigger costs. For example, the Japanese housing bubble that exploded in the early 1990s ushered in a period of economic doldrums, which Japan has yet to overcome.

Philippine authorities must therefore know the full extent of the linkage of Philippine banks and financial institutions to the US financial mess. The bigger the money that got tied up in the US financial mess, the stronger the impact on the Philippines.

Who to blame

It is now understood that market players exploited the performance of financial markets to create an illusion of an unstoppable expansion and large profits. While it is difficult to predict when a crisis explodes, quantitative techniques make it possible to model the probability of a crisis event, as Jason Furman and Joseph Stiglitz demonstrated in their study of the 1997 Asian crisis. It is therefore inconceivable that market players did not see a brewing problem.

Analysts argued that US authorities should have at least signaled that what went on was already not healthy. Recall that a market correction occurred after Alan Greenspan commented in December 1996 that the 1990s stock market boom exhibited “irrational exuberance.”

If US authorities wanted to act to deal with a potential problem, they did so with binding threats of intervention and regulation. But the fact is that, in the 2000s, the US Federal Reserve did not only refuse to intervene, it also did not acknowledge a housing bubble. It even went on to pursue lax monetary policy and to remove the remaining safeguards against speculative activities, including that on housing mortgages.

In a way, the Fed acquiesced to financial markets. And market players were emboldened because the US government made implicit promises to lend a hand in case help was needed. In short, not only were structures and institutions weakened, the incentives were unsound.

Wanted bailout

The US financial mess needs a cleanup. Bailouts are definitely expensive. Like it or not, US taxpayers are going to assume the burden when toxic financial products are socialized. Those who profited from irresponsible actions are not going to take any burden. There is no socialization of profits.

A bailout is needed. Bear Stearns, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, AIG, Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, and others to come need to be bailed out. The US financial system needs a bailout because the alternative scenario of a financial collapse is worse in terms of its impact on the US economy, the world economy and global security.

Some analysts argue that $700 billion is the right amount. Others disagree. Even a $1-trillion bailout is small compared with an estimated $11 trillion of toxic financial products or a $400-trillion financial system collapse.

The important issue is whether or not US authorities are serious in fighting the good cause and in taking actions in good faith to avert the greater costs because, in the event of a financial collapse, there will be no “soft landing” for everyone.

After bailout

US authorities must learn from this experience. Because of the financial mess, those who placed their money in, say, pension funds, for a good objective will not be able to look forward to a secure retirement. Many people will lose incomes, jobs and houses as the financial mess goes through the US economy.

Because it is not well understood how the money will be recovered, the bailout will create a huge hole in the financial system, even if it saves the financial markets. The bailout will penalize the taxpayers for a long time, even as US authorities purge the toxic financial products.

No doubt, the US financial mess will require quick and solid resolution. After that, there will be serious reregulation to discipline finance, to resuscitate the financial regulatory structures, to pull the financial system out from its setup that encourages financial casinos and, more importantly, to make finance once again serve the people.

Whither Philippines?

There is a tendency in the Philippines to ape what US authorities are doing with their financial markets. The tendency is to pattern the Philippine financial system to fit the US financial system. Because of that, Sixto K. Roxas said: “[the Philippines] reflect[s] the pathologies and illnesses of the US [financial system].”

Does the Philippine system exhibit symptoms of a financial crisis?

Cielito Habito wrote: “Bangko Sentral Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. signified the openness of the BSP to setting up an integrated regulatory body that will combine the functions of (Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas), Insurance Commission, and Securities and Exchange Commission. Not a few were surprised by the statement, given the BSP’s long-standing resistance to the very idea of such integration. The seeming change of heart may be indicative of the recognition of the growing complexity of the financial markets, and the regulatory gaps that could occur—and have in fact occurred [in our country]—as a result of such complexity.”

Ordinary Filipino

It is therefore imperative to ensure the soundness of the Philippine financial system, to make it resilient against financial crises, to ensure that financial products sold in the country or those bought elsewhere are safe, to check that market players are not engaging in financial casinos or preying on ordinary Filipinos or fooling everyone else to consume toxic financial products. There is also a need to avoid situations where our authorities are caught in a bind to bailout those who acted irresponsibly and to impose the burden on those who acted carelessly but, more importantly, to discipline finance and make it again work for us and support our economy so that our basic needs are guaranteed.

Furthermore, people who believe in regulation should run the regulatory agencies and be given ample room by government to implement the regulations. It is meaningless to have financial regulatory agencies or an integrated financial regulatory body when the people placed there do not believe in regulation or think that any regulation is bad or believe that the removal of regulations is their mandate.

Four-star hotel set to rise on Limketkai property (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031408/content.php?id=042)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Limketkai Sons, Inc. will start construction of a 21-storey, 250-room hotel complex within the year in the company’s 30-hectare commercial complex in this city’s Lapasan district.

http://www.bworldonline.com/BW031408/limketkaimall.jpg
The Limketkai commercial center is considered the leading shopping center in the city since it is the most accessible and most complete in Northern Mindanao.

Alfonso Y. Lim, chief executive officer of the company, said the hotel project would cost roughly P700 million and is expected to be completed by 2010.

The hotel will be the tallest structure in Mindanao, and will have a four-star classification. The hotel complex will have the usual amenities and facilities such as a ballroom, a function room, a coffee shop, and a swimming pool.

It will rise on the west side of the Limketkai commercial complex between the company’s proposed Gateway building on the national highway and Rosario Strip, an upscale area near Robinsons Big R Super Center that hosts boutiques, wellness centers, coffee shops and restaurants.

The Limketkai Group, which is also into agribusiness, is controlled by the Lim family based here.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula, who earlier commended local businessmen for laying out their investment plans in the city this year, praised the Lims’ hotel project. The mayor has made it a priority to boost the tourism.

Mr. Lim said the hotel will cater to businessmen as well as tourists. When asked if it will compete with the Mallberry Suites business hotel, which is adjacent to the Robinsons mall, Mr. Lim said the new hotel would complement the existing hotel’s operations.

The city has a number of major hotels aside from Mallberry, such as Pryce Plaza, Koresco, and Dynasty Court, catering to as many as 300,000 tourists arriving annually. Koresco Hotel, which was built by Korean investors, serves mainly Korean visitors.

In an interview with BusinessWorld late last year, Mr. Lim said Limketkai Sons, Inc. will convert its property in Lapasan district into the city’s new central business district. The plan includes the new Gateway building on the national highway, the new hotel, and an elevated walkway that connects buildings in the area.

and another one.

A ‘City within A City’ to rise soon (http://themindanaocurrent.blogspot.com/2008/09/headlines-front-page-september-15-2008.html)

Jaraula welcomes proposed Project

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p6TqhBe7UlU/SMzgyDZUePI/AAAAAAAAFlY/p6hlYDAdxSQ/s320/A+City+Within+A+City.jpg

A ’City within a City’ which will be known as Paseo del Rio will soon rise at the Macasandig end of Kagay-an Bridge. This was revealed by Ms. Rafaelita P. Pelaez, CEO of the GOPEL Group of Companies, owners of the property where the project will go up.

The Pelaez Family donated the rotunda of the property to the city, the area at the foot of the new bridge that connects to Carmen, and they intend to develop it into a business center which was designed by Felino Palafox, Jr. whose company is reportedly rated as the 94th top architectural company in the world.

City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula welcomed the proposed architectural project, an ambitious riverfront mixed use development of a 10-hectare property owned by the Pelaez family at barangay Macasandig, this city. He said that once realized, the project will certainly emerge as Cagayan de Oro City’s newest growth area within the urban center.

The City Mayor, at the same time, expressed optimism that the “Paseo del Rio” project or translated as “promenade by the river”, will stimulate the development of Cagayan de Oro as a globally-competitive city and put the city in the global tourism map.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_p6TqhBe7UlU/SMzfqieOeJI/AAAAAAAAFlI/teKDuY6boRc/s320/Palafox.jpg

Palafox was commissioned by the family of Dr. Rafaelita P. Pelaez to craft the project’s architectural design and overall concept. He designed the ‘Palm Island” of Dubai, The Rockwell Center of Makati, The Ayala Business Park of Cebu, Ayala Alabang, the Divine Mercy Shrine in El Salvador City and several other places here and abroad.

The multi-million “Paseo del Rio” project, that will cover open areas surrounding Carmen/Nazareth/Macasandig Bridge, will also complement with Mayor Jaraula’s flagship river boulevard development project which he is boldly pursuing along the riverbank of the Cagayan de Oro River.

The initial phase of the “Boulevard” along the river bank will consist of a 600-meter “walkway” from City Hall up to the city’s fifth bridge, to be known as the “Golden Mile, and a “Boulevard” from Toribio Chaves Street to J.R. Borja Street.

Mayor Jaraula expects to raise about P40 Billion from investments in this boulevard once finished.

In his presentation before the members of the City Council last week Palafox said the proposed Paseo del Rio project is designed… “as a place where people can walk, shop and dine in one walkable community…”

Applying his vast expertise in modern urban planning and design, Palafox said the concept of the “Paseo del Rio” is a multi-use approach of development in the project site that will boast of high-rise waterfront buildings and global-sized hotels of at least 350 rooms, restaurants, mixed-use commercial and business centers, playground, covered walkways, bicycle lanes, gazebo, rotunda, underground parking, and many amenities and recreational facililities.

Once fully developed, the project can generate employment to about 30,000 to 50,000 people, according to Palafox.

In addition to this, other nearby areas could possibly be additional sources of development and this may eventually end up as a ‘City within A City.’ (With a report from CIO)

Google Maps launched in RP (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW101008/content.php?id=043)

GLOBAL INTERNET giant Google has launched its Google Map Maker application in the Philippines, which will provide a detailed map of the Philippines for locals, tourists and potential investors.

With the launch, the Philippines will be the first Southeast Asian nation where the application is available. "The Philippines has a challenging topography featuring a diverse landscape and many remote, unexplored regions," Google said in a statement.

Google Map Maker will let local users locate, draw, label and accurately render existing tourist destinations and create maps of uncharted areas, making these visible to tourists and investors for the first time on the Google Map Web site. The maps will include street names, house numbers, parks, forest areas and other geographical features.

"This capability provides new commercial opportunities for local residents and businesses based on information provided by local users," the company said. "Google Map Maker is all about leveraging the knowledge of local experts found in every neighborhood and in every town and city," it said. It added that since map data is collected from people who have first-hand knowledge of the area, the information becomes more meaningful and relevant to users.

Palawan is a an example of a beautiful Philippine location with limited online visibility, out-of-date maps, and many uncharted areas. Google Map Maker is expected to have far-reaching implications on the country’s agricultural and environmental landscape as well. Detailed geographical information can be used to identify arable land, route irrigation, and in extreme cases, ensure accessibility to areas suffering from natural and man-made calamities. — Paolo Luis G. Montecillo

Hi peeps...

Lain pay ato, does anybody here have updates about the development of the water tower? October 21st is fast approaching and I'm not quite sure if it will be operational by then. Any pics or updates on the construction?

I was wondering the same thing...naiintriga ako sa itsura kung ikakabit na "GLASS ELEVATOR" at 360 deg. observation tower...

Team Building Together with the Alaska Team (http://travelsandtours.dingexx.com/2008/10/08/team-building-together-with-the-alaska-team/)
Posted by dingdans on Wednesday, October 8th 2008

Well, well… Last Saturday September 27 in this year our company administrators told us that we have a company team building but by department. When we heard the great news everyone are so excited because it happens once a year only in our company. After that great announcement each department will have a meeting for the venue of our team building. Our department decided that we will held our team building at BASAMANGGAS which is located somewhere at JASAAN. After the meeting everybody was okay, the things that we will bring was okay, the foods that we will be bringing are also okay, the transportation, in short all of us in our department was so excited for the team building and also for the new venue.

But 2 days after our meeting the company decided that all department will come together in one venue and the team building was consider as a general meeting for everybody…WTF….!!!!!!! After we heard the announcement all members in our department was so disappointed for making a direct decision with out informing us. All our excitement, energy, spirit, the aggressiveness of that team building was gone… But we can’t do anything because they the one who manage the company and the one who made a decision for what is good for the company and for the employee. Did you know guys where is the venue of our company team building…? At MAPAWA which is located also at Cagayan de Oro which some of us are already there for how many times, especially me, I’ve been there for several times already since when I was a student.. But as what I said we can’t do anything about it but to follow on what they want…WTF…!!!!

I accept in my self that I was so embarrassed on what happened in our team building. But in spite of that embarrassment happened on me I will say thank you also to them. You wonder why I say thank you to them…? It is because I saw my favorite team in the PBA which is the ALASKA TEAM..wwwwwwoooooooooowwwwwwwwwww… My idol are there, the Alaska Team visit and travel in Cagayan de Oro for there team building also and for some exhibition game that will held at Xavier University… we took pictures with team to the coach. This is my first time ever that I saw my PBA idol in personal…Meller is there, Lastimosa, Junio, Cariaso, Hawkins, and other staff of the team…Sad to say that the player who has the same family name with me which the triple “AAA” Aaron ABAN is not there. … I think the Team Alaska has a great time also during there Zip line at MAPAWA…That team building is so great and memorable tome because I have time to see them by near..aheheh…This are the photos of our team building and for the Alaska Team.
