lol. I like how close Partizan and Red Star's stadiums are to eachother. This is pretty uncommon in big city rivalries, especially when there are only two big teams in the city.

Is Marakana getting reconstructed?
NavyBlue October 25th, 2008, 05:33 AM Whats behind the name 'Marakana'?
Is it an official name or nickname - how did it come about?
scukaf October 25th, 2008, 10:37 PM Hey I also didn't know that Partizan and Red Star are playing so near one to each other. I mean their stadiums are too much close (judging by that air photo).
Deki---KG October 26th, 2008, 01:16 PM Whats behind the name 'Marakana'?

Official name is Stadium Red Star but nobody say to this stadium Red Star. I mean 99% of Serbs say Marakana and Reporter/TV worldwide say Marakana too.

Zorba October 28th, 2008, 10:24 PM Any plans to renovate it? One of (probably the most) historic stadiums in the Balkans but it looks a bit past its time.
CrazySerb October 29th, 2008, 02:50 AM There are always "plans" - but money & lack of initiative is the main problem.
Right now, as it seems, Partizan's stadium will be renovated first - just yesterday, their administration has even suggested they might play at Marakana while their stadium is being rebuilt - redicolous
Anyhow, here are some most recent images of the supposed new look of Marakana stadium...

scukaf October 30th, 2008, 10:37 AM hmm, nothing special (but that's just my opinion). Sincerely, I'd be more happy if they won't build that stadium. I like the old Marakana more.
What's the capacity of a new one?
renco October 30th, 2008, 02:35 PM Personaly I don't like it either. With some improvements Marakana is a great stadion.
Bobby3 October 30th, 2008, 05:10 PM That redesign would make it worse. All it really needs is a facelift.
vernon October 30th, 2008, 06:28 PM Partizan's stadium could use some major reconstruction, but I think the Marakana is excellent as it is. It is like Old Trafford, where it feels old but timeless. It is meant to last for generations.
Kosovo is Serbia.

luizz27 April 15th, 2010, 07:43 PM is there any relation between Marakana and Maracană (Rio de Janeiro) ???
Lord David April 16th, 2010, 07:33 AM So, what's the supposed capacity of an upgraded Stadion Crvena Zvezda? 60,000+?
If so, it would be a good thing for any future Belgrade Olympic aspirations.
Cobucci April 16th, 2010, 08:25 AM is there any relation between Marakana and Maracană (Rio de Janeiro) ???Yes, the name Marakana is in honour of Maracană Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. It got this nickname after its capacity have been increased to 100k, a normal attendance for Maracană.
bertoolin June 10th, 2010, 02:43 AM Historically the stadium have a great name, we cant deny it, but this is the only plus. The architecture is totally from another time. Non functional, old, with athletics track,.......for sure a piece of architecture to be rebuild.
lukaszek89 June 10th, 2010, 03:01 AM One of the "Big" stadiums in Europe. With rich history:yes:
Luke80 June 10th, 2010, 08:07 PM IMO 1 of only 3 really good looking 'track' stadiums (the others being Metalist and, when finished, Skopje).
mud777 June 14th, 2010, 09:39 PM ^^ Berlin is better by a I dont know what
Those 3 are not even in the same univers when compared with Olympiastadion ;)
Or did you mean in balkan area.
Then poljud ;)
Jim856796 July 8th, 2010, 04:41 PM The Crvena Zvezda Stadium may be demolished for a football-only stadium in the future. It may be rectangular, so it shouldn't retain the Marakana nuckname.
delija90 July 11th, 2010, 11:46 PM Plans for new Marakana.
Stadium costs 200mil euros.
capacity: 50.000 +
A private company will finance the construction of the stadium and in return they will get the land around the stadium where they should build a shopping center and office space.

What about the Olympiastadion in Munich, or Bari's San Nicola, Niigata stadium or the new Costa Rican national stadium? Maybe its just me, but it seems like tack stadiums tend to have much more elegant lines to them, its the atmosphere and sightlines the suffer, not the physical beauty.

Quite nice, awful, not much better, and average. :)

looks great, they are also removing the track?
I think marakana would look even better if they removed the track...dug in the seats... added another tier and added a white/transparent glass room.. make it look a lil like the emirates arsenal stadium...
Djakza January 4th, 2011, 12:39 AM Yes,the track will be removed, and the shape of the stadium will be very different. And they plan to build it one stand at a time,so football matches will be played at the time of construction.Unfortunately, there is not very much information about the stadium...
Jericho-79 January 4th, 2011, 02:06 AM So are they going to demolish the current Marakana and build a new one? Or are they just going to renovate the current stadium?
Is this new Marakana currently under in the 'planning' stage? Are they going to do the groundbreaking this year?
Djakza January 5th, 2011, 02:15 AM It will be a completly new stadium,at the same place. They are getting the construction permits, but it is very complicated, they are probably waiting also for new Sports Law,so the groundbrakeing will be this year,or early next.As i said, there is almost no info on the stadium itself,no pics of inside of the stadium...

Sponsor January 7th, 2011, 02:00 AM Yes,the track will be removed, and the shape of the stadium will be very different.
Not Marakana anymore.
Djakza January 7th, 2011, 06:59 PM It still is,until it's demolished :D Then it will be Stadion Rajko Mitic.

Jim856796 March 21st, 2011, 02:47 PM It will take a hosting of the Summer Olympics for Belgrade to get a new Marakana, though I doubt Belgrade may host a Summer Olympics soon.)
Djakza March 21st, 2011, 09:41 PM Well, according to the project for the new stadium,it won't have a tartan track,so the Olympics wouldn't do anything about it,and Olympics won't be in this region for a very long time :)
dande March 21st, 2011, 10:13 PM Some of the most expensive real estate in Belgrade is right near by this stadium.
Jim856796 March 21st, 2011, 10:38 PM ^^I hate the Olympics.
gavstar00 March 21st, 2011, 11:02 PM ^^I hate the Olympics.
Why do you hate the Olympics Jim? Did they randomly approach you in school and punch you in the face? Did you power slam them into the floor?
Jericho-79 March 22nd, 2011, 01:14 AM It still is,until it's demolished :D Then it will be Stadion Rajko Mitic.
The new name of the stadium will officially be Stadion Rajko Mitic?
Why are they giving the new stadium a new name?
Djakza March 22nd, 2011, 04:18 PM There's nothing official, but all the fans(including me) want to give the stadium that name.Currently it doesn't have a specific name, except the formal "Crvena zvezda stadium",and the least we could do for the biggest legend that ever played in our club is to name the stadium after him,Rajko Mitic.
