Well I LOVE it. 9. I don't know why, but it looks futuristic to me. Maybe because you don't see any classical architecture this damned huge.
Phil October 21st, 2002, 06:16 PM I give it a 9 too, it's not beautiful, but there's actually something special with this building, it's "different", I don't know how to explain :)
Sunflower October 21st, 2002, 10:27 PM How much of that spire is counted in it's height?
SteelCity32 October 21st, 2002, 10:51 PM whoa..Interesting. LARGE SPIRE.
5/10
Subdude October 22nd, 2002, 12:30 AM The definitive work of totalitarian architecture - at least until that loony hotel in Pyongyang came along. Stalin's architectural minions were trying to create a unique style that combined massive scale with classical detailing, because the unornamented international style gaining favor in the West at the same time was just so darn capitalist. It's hard to rate something this unique, but I would probably toss out a six. In a way it's grotesque, but it overcomes it by being so Russian.
cgrassham October 22nd, 2002, 12:37 AM I love it I wish the uni I'm going to looked like this 8/10
Ersh October 22nd, 2002, 02:09 AM An elagent looking building. I've always liked this building. 9/10 :)
DamienK October 22nd, 2002, 08:37 AM I like the proportions and the detailing, and the spire. In some of the photos the top sections look unusually whiter than the rest of the building, were they given a scrub or reclad? In older photos the whole facade was a similar colour. 9/10
SUNNI October 22nd, 2002, 09:24 AM the most beautiful Moscow building and THE best University i have ever seen
crazyhorse_88 October 22nd, 2002, 03:41 PM :bash: :guns1: :bleep:   >( :baaa: :moods: :D
it's ugly , bud very special built
why r all the "skyscrapers" of moskow like that one?????
anyway i give it a 5
CTroyMathis October 23rd, 2002, 12:32 AM Total Russia. I always wished I could've gone down to see Moscow and this building during all my visits to the Arctic Russian areas.
7.
rj2uman October 23rd, 2002, 12:58 AM Oppressive, Massive, Brutal, Imposing. I love it even though it is not beautiful. 8/10
Caledon1981 October 23rd, 2002, 01:09 AM i would love to see that in person . . . but dont agree with counting goofy spires to the overall height . . so 5/10
AG October 23rd, 2002, 09:00 AM Wow, very grand Uni, very wide, very nice facade, and good spire.
8/10
enzo October 23rd, 2002, 03:13 PM I saw the word "grotesque" used above and that is a perfect description.
Grotesque though does not necessarily mean ugly, in this case it means unique, tantalizing and historically significant.
This building is almost impossible to rate, but for all it's (I wish I knew Russian because I can't quite find the adjective here) I give it 9/10.
RafflesCity October 23rd, 2002, 04:39 PM 8/10
Very grand and majestic. Somehow I cant see it as a skyscraper.
Duff October 25th, 2002, 02:43 AM i like it!

DrumCorpsAlum November 6th, 2002, 06:15 PM 9/10. Very cool!
Steven November 10th, 2002, 04:19 AM I voted 8.5
mookiecece November 21st, 2002, 11:01 PM looks like a castle almost.... i don't think the spire should count towards the height though..... 8/10
De Snor November 22nd, 2002, 11:17 PM This is no skyscraper to me , it's a boombastic creation of insanety
invincible December 11th, 2002, 08:45 AM the spire/tower section is way too tall compared to the rest of the building..
8.5/10
JacobRit December 11th, 2002, 03:10 PM its hard to traet this with the same criteria we do a skyscraper, its more like a church, grand but mostly decorative, if i was rating it as a building i would give it a 9
as a skyscraper a 7 will do
Aleksey December 30th, 2002, 10:48 PM Tallests building in Moscow 9/10

Bold and unique, but it doesn't have that skyscraper look.
SeeMacau January 1st, 2003, 06:45 AM Very beautiful
9/10
Bobdreamz January 19th, 2003, 08:43 PM this is an architectural beauty...simply stunning to look at...some have used the word grotesque but it looks to be more overbearing since it's so huge...it does have a castle resemblance similar to those built in Spain..it's impressive....8.5/10
1+2=3 February 15th, 2003, 12:27 AM An ugly son of a bitch, 4/10
Leienaar February 15th, 2003, 02:21 AM Almost perfect! A 9.5 for me.
I love these buildings, the greatness of their facade, the beautiful positioning. I'd like to visit it once.
supercees February 17th, 2003, 11:37 AM I like the building, very impressive... only thing I don't like is the idea behind it.... an 8
Lars February 20th, 2003, 08:21 PM Yehaaaaa! I love it sooooo much! MY absolutely favorit! 10/10
Ashram February 22nd, 2003, 07:04 PM Awesome Soviet building.
The Messiah March 7th, 2003, 06:14 PM Looks like something popped out of disney land.
8.0/10
ogurets March 31st, 2003, 10:01 AM 10/10
the pictures don't do justice to the way that it looms imposingly over the whole city, nor to the detail of the soviet-style decorations 200 metres above the ground... ok so it isn't that tall, but it does compensate for this by having lots of style and stone hammer-and-sickle logos about the size of a small lorry.
Plus it looks incredible in the dark.
And it stands on top of a hill that makes it seem twice as high as it is.
And there is the most incredible view from this hill!
If only the soviets had spent more money competing properly with the US in building skyscrapers instead of wasting all that money on ICBMs that no-one ever used anyway, then this would probably be twice the height. If only....
Ptarmigan April 9th, 2003, 10:54 PM 9.5/10 Nice building! I think its the world's tallest building in a university.
Evergrey April 10th, 2003, 03:03 AM 10! My second favorite university building after the Cathedral of Learning in Pittsburgh. This building looks totally evil, oppressive, grim, mighty and powerful. It is extremely ornate and massive. I love this style of building.
My only complaint is that the spire is a little excessive.
BGT April 27th, 2003, 03:08 AM 7.5/10
TropicalSQ744 May 10th, 2003, 05:59 PM This one is a classic.. But i find the spire weird... I dont understand why they tuck some circular thing on the top of it? :?
8/10
weirdo May 20th, 2003, 07:18 PM looks grand. 9.5/10
dcb11 May 27th, 2003, 11:53 PM Beautiful building, but keep in mind it was built by Stalin to represent the power of the State. Its meant to intimidate, not impress.
This is part of the "seven sisters" buildings. All Stalinist Gothic. One of them, Palace of Culture, was never built.
http://www.skyscrapers.com/re/en/wm/pr/100285/
Incidentally, this is the tallest academic building in the world. The second tallest is the Cathedral of Learning at the University of Pittsburgh (Pennsylvania, US).

huaiwei May 28th, 2003, 03:18 PM If its meant to intimidate, then it did a fantastic job at tt. 8/10. :)

Great landmark
Mr. Fat Jack November 12th, 2003, 06:04 PM Now that's what I call a god-DAMN institution. 9/10
Liz L November 14th, 2003, 08:51 PM 6.5 / 10 - I've clicked by this thread several times before, and have not voted because I couldn't decide how to rate this imposing, massive pile...Is is a scraper or a castle, or what? :?
(I might have given it a higher rating as a castle....)
The main tower seems to have a lot of nice "neo-quelquechose" detailing (that wasn't sarcasm - just an inability to identify the style more precisely - or is it several styles?) At any rate, the red string courses (if that's the term i want), the other bands of relief work running around the tower, and the statues seem, as far as I can see, to work well together. The set backs give it some gracefullness in spite of its massiveness.
The smaller towers also seem to work well, and make the overall shape of the building more graceful.
However...
That metal spire with the star & wreath sprouting from what looks like a vase simply comes accross as the world's largest potted plant, perhaps an escapee from that movie "Little Shop of Horrors", :ohno: and looks, somehow, completely out of place.
The facade, below the ornament, seems bland, almost dreary, as if the architects had exhausted their energy up there where the building meets the sky...
Sniper November 16th, 2003, 10:05 PM 8.5/10. Is it the 108th highest building??? It doesn't look that tall

Well, i understand,i will be visiting Russia this summer and i hope i'll visit Moscva City too :-) . Here in greece there are no skyscrapers at all... :-(
Iiee July 9th, 2004, 06:56 PM I would give it a 10 but it's kinda creepy (the communist style with the red paint etc...). And inside it looks awful (in the pics).
I give it a 9, I love the classical touch and details (and the lighting)!
coth July 9th, 2004, 08:18 PM ^we voting for architecture, not for political interests!
sdtj July 10th, 2004, 09:49 AM 9.5/10 Just beautiful ex soviet architecture.. Great pics BTW.
:)
Iiee July 14th, 2004, 07:52 PM I meant the architechture was a little bit creepy not that it's creepy because it's a communist building. I apologize if I was a bit misleading. :okay:
LibertyTwo July 17th, 2004, 12:59 AM Definitely not a skyscraper, more of a monument than anything
Great architecture and design, but again 1/10 for being a real skyscraper
10/10 for architecture
10/10 for being so friggin gaudy (not Gaudi, although ... ;-0)
1/10 for being a cheap way to say we have skyscrapers
7.5/10 overall then I guess
LibertyTwo July 17th, 2004, 01:01 AM BTW is the entire university self contained in this structure
Or is it sort of a Cathedral of Learning, with satellite buildings etc

Impressive for 1953 Russia. Too ornamental tho
TallBox October 6th, 2004, 11:20 PM i had the honour of seeing this building in person a few years back - it looks damn good when viewed down the garden leading to it on a blustery, snowy, winter day.
9/10
Monkey November 1st, 2004, 11:51 PM It's undoubtedly an impressive building, but I wouldn't call it "beautiful".
It looks too much like a fortress, or some kind of prison.

Scruffy88 January 8th, 2006, 07:53 PM 8/10 This is one of the very few times when a giant spire is warranted. Communist to a T but so what. It looks cool. It screams power and strength at you which makes the fact that its a university more interesting. It looks more like a capital building of a country.
thiz_iz_disco January 8th, 2006, 08:44 PM it has smth special...i just can't explain!!!

poisonous_ivy March 28th, 2006, 12:21 PM 10/10 The best thing I've ever seen...<maybe St. Basil is better :D:D>. One thing it's architecture, and second is- it was made from very good materials- only best quality. It's worth everything because modern skyscrapers will collapse, and it will be still standing at it's place. Just perfect...

I'm not only studying in this building I'm just living (for last 3 years) and working in it. It like a small city with all intrastructure. An you could spend several days and weeks without leaving it.
A view from a hostel. It was rainy yesterday

Of course, MSU building is amazing and I'm very proud that its the place there a temporary live. It looks massive and forever indeginous, that today skyscrapers in a Moscow City.

anm May 23rd, 2006, 11:34 PM Hey, does anybody know how many students it houses? Is the whole university contained in this one building or does the campus have a few other buildings.
The university has about 35,000 students.
This is just one of the buildings, mostly a dorm, there are some lecture auditoriums in it too, geology/geography departments, museum of minerals, cafeteria... maybe something else... Other departments are in their own buildings located around in a huge campus; the campus itself is a big park.

kmc87 March 3rd, 2008, 04:24 PM I think this building is tacky. Of course, when it was built I'm sure it was in style, at least in Moscow, so I'm not blaming the tackiness on bad architecture or anything. I just personally don't enjoy it very much. However, the sheer size of the building and what it does for Moscow's skyline are impressive, so I gave it a 6.5.
