For some reason, street level pictures of San Antonio look really cool. It's from up top where it looks very ugly and dreary.

I agree. San Antonio's skyline is awful, for being the 2nd largest city in Texas (3rd largest metro) and all, but it's hard to beat San Antonio's street scenes. I think that's a positive thing about San Antonio. I can think of many cities that look better in their skyline, and less impressive in its street scenes. Not Dallas or Houston, but I'm sure you all know what cities I'm talking about.

San Antonio looks like it belongs somewhere in Ohio or Michigan.

Maybe because it looks more like Grand Rapids or Toledo than a metro of 2mil.

There are some very cool old buildings but too much beige 80's crap surrounds them.
The street scenes are OK but the skyline overall is small and ugly.

It doesn't "work", is there an "overall plan" for downtown SA?

Thats what I mean, it wasnt a hit at SA at all.

Thats exactly what I was thinking (in terms of skyline). Maybe the weather has something to do with it because I've never had that impression before. On the other hand, you just don't see southern cities that are dominated by brick clad high rises.

Are there height restrictions downtown?

Great pics by the way.

You didn't know the 7th largest city in the USA by population was that big? Really? Are you serious? Actually I think it is severely lacking in density for its size. However it certainly makes up for itself by oozing character. San Antonio, Without a doubt, has one of the best subterranean river walk systems in the country. In fact one of the best of all riverwalks, Its something I wish Charlotte could somehow mimic. Great Pix LSyd!

I travel to San Antonio once every 2 or 3 months at least. Lately, once every month - because of the DoD presence there. I know many people in SA, and all are very proud to tout themselves as the "7th largest city in the US" or the "2nd largest city in Texas".

I'm sorry, but this just shows where statistics are skewed. Houston and Dallas are both much, much, much bigger and more influential cities in Texas. No contest. There are 20 larger and more important cities in the US than San Antonio.

Just because San Antonio's CSA is calculated from the number of people that live within the 412 square miles of the region doesn't mean it should be recognized as one of the nation's largest cities. It just means it's one of the nations most bloated CSAs.

Take Minneapolis - 58 square miles is their CSA and 373K people. 6430 people/square mile. Almost double what San Antonio has. San Antonio - 412 square miles and 1600000 people. 3883 people/square mile.

If you want to compare MSAs, then that is where the difference shows. San Antonio holds no ground to many cities in the US. It's CSA is so large, that it's MSA is almost equal to it!

San Antonio has too much land in their CSA to make any numbers realistic.

Thats the thing, I didn't realize it was 7th place... but then again Phoenix is the same way, very high population..... But the city pictures look like a small dusty town... (No offense SA) Many of the pic's are beautiful...

That's odd for them to say they are the 2nd largest city in Texas. LoL.

Dallas metro= 6,145,037
Houston metro= 5,628,101
San Antonio metro= 1,990,675

They aren't even close to Dallas and Houston.

San Antonio is along the same size as Fort Worth and Austin in Texas.

Great shots of SA, the downtown at street level is so vibrant and colorful, and the weather helps a lot to enjoy it year round. Thanks for the collection of pics.

That's due to terrible leadership during the 60's, 70's and 80's. Also, the HDRC the last few years has been so god awful that our current Mayor reduced their power and reduced the number of people on the HDRC.

The same thing was that they had people build building that had a "San Antonio" look, yet they have no defined "San Antonio look" that an architect can look at and go from there. Instead, it's what they like gets built and what they like is... blah!

Are there height restrictions downtown?

The only height restrictions downtown lie just behind the Alamo. Nothing major, something like within 500 feet behind the Alamo the height of buildings is greatly reduced as to not build anything that would appear in a picture.

Great pics by the way.

I agree!

I travel to San Antonio once every 2 or 3 months at least. Lately, once every month - because of the DoD presence there. I know many people in SA, and all are very proud to tout themselves as the "7th largest city in the US" or the "2nd largest city in Texas".

Well, not to go too deep, it is the 7th largest city in the US" and the "2nd largest city in Texas."

I'm sorry, but this just shows where statistics are skewed.

Houston and Dallas are both much, much, much bigger and more influential cities in Texas.

Houston metro (and city) and Dallas-Fort Worth metro are much, much, much bigger.

No contest. There are 20 larger and more important cities in the US than San Antonio.

Well, there's only 6 larger cities.

But there are 26 larger metro's than San Antonio metro.

Just because San Antonio's CSA is calculated from the number of people that live within the 412 square miles of the region doesn't mean it should be recognized as one of the nation's largest cities. It just means it's one of the nations most bloated CSAs.

San Antonio doesn't have a CSA. It has an MSA.

Take Minneapolis - 58 square miles is their CSA and 373K people. 6430 people/square mile. Almost double what San Antonio has. San Antonio - 412 square miles and 1600000 people. 3883 people/square mile.

If SA city were 65 square miles, the city population would be 400,000. That's 6,153 per square mile. That DOES NOT take into consideration that three military installations (1 post, 1 AFB and 1 former AFB now Industrial port) take up nearly 10,000 acres of land and yield very little in population. Less than a thousand total in 10,000 acres.

Or in terms of square miles, 15 square miles of the 65 square miles that contains 400,000 is basically adding nothing to the population. So in essence you could argue that in 50 square miles, San Antonio has a population of 400,000 or 8,000 people per square mile.

If you want to compare MSAs, then that is where the difference shows. San Antonio holds no ground to many cities in the US. It's CSA is so large, that it's MSA is almost equal to it!

San Antonio doesn't have a CSA. It does have a MSA, just like all metro areas in this country.

You can't compare apples with oranges. You compare apples with apples. Oranges with... well.

In this case the apple is city population. Oranges are metro.

San Antonio has too much land in their CSA to make any numbers realistic.

SA doesn't have a CSA.

Great pics!! I agree that SA looks much more like a midwestern city (from the air) than expected. However, when you take a cloer look all of the spanish influence is there and that is not found in the midwest. SA resembles Bham, IMO.

^ i agree...minus the hills at least. i went driving around outside the CBD last weekend to take pics, and the residential grids and weathered old housing reminded me of Bham's industrial grit with some Charleston classiness and age thrown into the housing stock as well. new pics will be coming soon.

It's funny because if you travel further north to the Stone Oak area or northwest to the Helotes or Sonoma areas it's very California like.

So SA is a mix of everything. lol
