Works of Larry Alcala, a famous cartoonist in the Philippine Islands, is currently on exhibit at the Museo Negrense de La Salle. He is one of many people who've found Bacolod to be a pleasant place to live in. He and his family moved to Bacolod after retirement.

You are indeed a classic Waway... Don't you just love to bash people from Bacolod and Dumaguete... Your victims? Zy, Ritche, Dinho, Nicko, and I don't know who else...

What's wrong with my saying that McDonald's is more popular in Bacolod than any other Filipino city anyway? McDonald's is not the best burger chain in the world? So why so upset about that? Bennigan's, Fuddrucker's, and Johnny Rocket's are just some of the burger chains that are much better than McDonald's.

2 more sites in Bacolod proclaimed as IT zones

Two more information technology zones in Bacolod City were recently proclaimed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, bringing to four the number of IT zones in the city.

These include a parcel of land in Brgy. Estefania, declared as an IT park, and a building in 22nd-Lacson Sts., as an IT building, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of the Bacolod IT Focus Team, said yesterday. The Estefania property, owned by Sunimoh Inc., was created an IT zone by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 1220 dated Jan. 18, 2007. It has been accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority under the name Bacolod Information Technology Park.

The facility in 22nd-Lacson Streets, proclaimed an IT zone through Presidential Proclamation 1223 dated Jan. 23, 2007 and accredited by the PEZA under the name Monfort Information Technology Center, houses the first site of Focus Pacific in the Philippines, a US-based call center company.
Batapa-Sigue said the approval of more IT zones in the city makes the Bacolod IT Focus Team more confident in promoting it as the next IT hub in the Philippines.

Among mid-sized cities in the country, she said, Bacolod now has the most number of IT zones.

The first two IT zones in Bacolod are the East Block, which houses a medical transcription firm, a locally-owned call center, and several food shops, and the Robinsons Metro Bacolod, the site of contact center company Teletech.
These two locations are first IT park and the first IT building in Western Visayas, respectively.

Other PEZA-accredited sites in Bacolod that are still waiting for presidential proclamations are Luxor IT Center, a hotel and a call center site of Teleperformance, and the Lopue's East IT Center.
Batapa-Sigue said IT companies that will locate in these IT zones in Bacolod can avail of all the national tax incentives aside from those granted by the local government.

For IT locators, the government, among others, provides an income tax holiday or exemption from corporate income tax for four years but can be extended up to a maximum of eight years.
After the ITH period, they have the option to pay a special five percent tax on gross income, in lieu of all national and local taxes. Of the five percent, the host local government will have a share of two percent. source: www.visayandailystar.com

Negros Occidental infra declared ready for investors

Mailum, Bago City (6 February) -- Come to Bago City, come to Murcia, come to Negros Occidental!

This was the slogan underscored by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo as a way of telling the investors to locate their investments in the said places.

President Arroyo enumerated the reasons why investors should come and invest in Negros Occidental starting from the nearing-completion New Bacolod (Silay) Airport of International Standards to the recently commissioned 49-MW Northern Negros Geothermal Power Plant (NNGPP) in the province.

With the commissioning of the NNGPP, the residents of Murcia and Bago City will share the experience of those in Valencia in Oriental Negros and Cananga in Leyte where their power rates are subsidized thru the royalties of which 80 percent must go to electricity.

“Power has been a major source of cost for most investors. That is why we are telling investors to invest in areas like Bago and Murcia where the local government has royalties from the power generator that they can use to become more competitive,” President Arroyo said when asked by ABC-CBN’s Honey Grace Catalan in an interview.

Investors whose power requirement is intensive and the power cost is high, President Arroyo urged them to go to Murcia and Bago City instead. While electronics firm who want to speed out the delivery of their raw materials and products, the New Bacolod (Silay) Airport is coming up to lay out the infrastructure they need to become more competitive.

The President also revealed that Japan through its Prime Minister pledged during the recently concluded ASEAN Summit in Cebu City some $2 billion to finance energy security projects all over east region in Asia.

The start of the operation of the 49-MW NNGPP means a savings of $15 million of fuel per year, the President added. (PIA/EAD)

:) Preliminary gov't
center work continuing
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Hilmarc's Construction Corp. had requested for a suspension of time given them to finish the Bacolod City Government Center project, not a suspension of the work on the project, City Administrator Lorendo Dilag said yesterday.

Dilag said this was clarified to him by HCC legal counsel Rogelio Peig during their recent conference in Bacolod City.

In a phone interview yesterday, Peig said that what they had requested from the city government was a suspension of the period of time given them to finish the project pending the issuance of a building permit.

He said that since they did not ask for the suspension of the project, the preliminary work continues, except that no direct construction will be going on at the site until they get a building permit.

Dilag said it is clearly stated in the contract that HCC will undertake the construction of the project within a period of 18 months starting Jan. 2. He said that since HCC has formally started the construction of the project, it unilaterally asked for the suspension of time until a building permit will be issued to them.

Dilag said the Environmental Compliance Certificate, which is a requirement for issuance of a building permit, is being facilitated at the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. He believes it is just a matter of time before it is granted, he said.

Once the ECC is granted, a copy will be given to the Office of the Building Official as basis for the issuance of the building permit, he added.

Dilag said the city had applied for ECC and certificate of non-coverage. He said they have already submitted the required documents last month to the DENR regional office which conducted a surprise ocular inspection at the government center site last week.

Meanwhile, Peig said that, until now, they have not yet received a copy of the complaint filed by the KABALAKA group against them so they have no idea what the case is all about.

A complaint seeking the declaration of nullity of the contract between the city and HCC, against Mayor Evelio Leonardia, HCC, the members of the Bids and Awards Committee and the 10 councilors who authorized the Mayor to enter into the contract with the winning bidder, was filed by the KABALAKA group last month.

Peig said they cannot make a comment until they receive a copy.

Dilag, a member of the BAC, said he believes the case filed by the KABALAKA group against them is weak.*CGS www.visayandailystar.com :) :)

In a previous post, sabi Yellow Cab.

Now Jerry's Grill, Teriyaki Boy and Kenny's? Yahoo!!

Pansin ko lang, puro mga manok ha,

I hope Chicken Bacolod comes in too so that there is competition!!! Sa lasa, may laban naman Chicken Bacolod. Nasa presentation lang yan and side dishes at saka service!!! Good for them as it will prompt them to improve!!!!

Thank you and do keep us updated!!!

Alot of chicken themed restaurants will always think twice or more, before they open their doors here in bacolod, KFC hesitated a bit before finally opening its first branch in bacolod a couple of years ago because of this fact, this is manokan country baby, we live and breath chicken inasal, anyway i go to KENNY's for their RIBS, mash potatoes and java rice...not for their chicken cos i dont like their chicken, kinda bland for me w/o the gravy

It was very exciting to witness the groundbreaking and launching of the newest commercial center in Bacolod, the 888 Chinatown Square that will soon rise at the site of the former Negros Occidental Tennis Association Court at Gatuslao Street. This is a project of William Ong, son of Ong Hong Tee, who is an old friend of the family, and a very prominent member of the local Chinese community. William, who came home to Bacolod after 35 years of a successful stay in Manila, said he thought he was going to retire already. Until he saw the potentials of his home city and they nagged him into starting this project. The blessing and other ceremonies were attended by the top officials of Bacolod and Negros Occidental, and the very supportive Chinese community members, led by the beloved Msgr. John B. Liu. and, Fr. Noly Que, and of course, the proud parents of William, investors and officers of the Bacolod Capitol Hill Land Development Corporation, of which William is CEO and president.

this is what i like about bacolod, kahit wala gaano malalaking building, the stand-alone cafes and restos more than compensate for it, buildings like sorrento, the bobs cafes, kuppa et al all look good, the cafes in other cities kasi (like in davao) rent spaces lang sa mga building (like blugre landco). sa bacolod nagpapatayo talaga ng building ang mga cafe and kahit mcdo (dito sa davao most mcdos are found in malls or in commercial buildings, i think the one in JP laurel lang ang stand alone)

hehehe i noticed that too, Dunkin Donuts dosent need to be worried about the Mister Donuts competion, nothing has changed except for a new Building design, and added a variety of dishes and coffee selections, other than that their doughnuts still taste the same, Dunkin Donuts has a better track record in my opinion, i prefer their doughnuts over MD's, cos i find MD's donuts to be bland and cheap in taste(except for their tortes)

I'm running
with Bing: Novero
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Vice Mayor Renecito Novero confirmed yesterday that he is running for Congress with Mayor Evelio Leonardia's as his mayor.

Novero said he cannot be an official congressional candidate for the Lakas Party since incumbent Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella (also of Lakas) is seeking re-election.

"So the most rational approach for me is to be a candidate of another party," he said. Novero said they have yet to discuss among themselves and within their own group who will be their vice mayor and their slate for councilors.

He said they have some suggested names for councilors that still have to go through the "filtering process."

Leonardia, who is an official candidate of the Nationalist People's Coalition, said they will come up with their final slate within this month. He said the deadline for filing of the certificates of candidacy is on March 29.

Meanwhile, two Bacolod City councilors, formerly identified with the camp of Puentevella, have signified that they will join the slate of Leonardia in this year's election.

Councilor Jude Thaddeus Sayson said he is supporting the administration and the candidacy of the Mayor a hundred percent.

On the other hand, Councilor Homer Bais said he is joining the administration slate because he has been a part of it and the several projects it had implemented.

He said there is a possibility that other members of their group will join Leonardia.

Bais said that although they ran under Lakas, in 2004, they were all declared independent candidates because the number of councilors who ran under the Lakas Party had already exceeded 12.

Sayson said they did not abandon Puentevella. However, he already has his own mayor and they have a different stand, he said. But this is just purely political and Puentevella has even offered them to join his slate again, he said.

He said they are joining Leonardia since the projects that other administrations had only visualized, were realized under his leadership.

On the other hand, the Serve the People Movement Association Inc., together with the labor sectors group (ALARM) in Bacolod City is fielding its own common independent candidates in the May 2007 elections, a press release from the group said.

These are Jovito Berdin for mayor, Abraham Tingson for vice mayor, and Anecito Secondes and Ernie Prego for councilors.*CGS

Eco-tourism seminar set

The 1st Southern Negros Occidental Coastal Zone Marine EcoTourism Seminar and Workshop will be held Feb. 17 to 18, at Punta Bulata Resort and Spa in Brgy. Elihan, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.

The seminar hopes to address issues such as the environment-friendly infrastructure development, development and management of eco-tourism or sustainable tourism projects, market potentials and marketing.

Guest speakers will be Professor David Bellamy, founding chairman of the International Committee for the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards, and president of nine and vice president of six conservation organizations in the United Kingdom; Grace Favila of the Sustainable Coastal Tourism in Asia; and Carlos Libosada, a Filipino expert in ecotourism.

The seminar also hopes to bring together and unite the SNCDP Management Council, local governmet units, resort operators, and stakeholders of various beach tourism destinations and properties within the SNCDP. Participants will also have a field trip to the Danjugan Island on Feb. 18.

Creative writing workshop slated in Escalante City

A seminar workshop on creative writing will be conducted tomorrow and Feb. 17 by the Escalante City Tourism office, in cooperation with the Shakespearean Family, a local college organization, and the Department of Education in Escalante City, Negros Occidental.

It is in connection with the celebration of the National Arts Month spearheaded by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts and will be held at the Mount Carmel audio-visual room.

The barangays of Escalante have their own folktales, myths, legends and stories, and the seminar workshop hopes to come out with a comprehensive barangay history and update its present records. About 60 participants from the local college and high schools are expected to attend the workshop.

Choreographers, dancers and musicians will create a dance and music rendition using the output of the activity.

Digital photography, painting and museology seminars will also follow during the month-long activity which culminates on the last week of February, in time for the 7th City Charter anniversary. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/09/people.htm)

Very funny... Anyway, what is not good about most project announcements is that most of them do not happen. Toys 'R' Us opens first Visayas store - Graham Coates, general manager of Toys "R" Us Philippines, at the opening of their first store in the Visayas at the Robinsons Place Bacolod. You can find toys here that you cannot find anywhere in the world, Coates said of the latest branch of what is dubbed as "the world's largest specialty toy store." The more than 1,000 square-meter store located at the second floor of the mall in Lacson Street, Mandalagan is a "big haven" of quality toys, including Toys "R" Us private labels, Fast Lane (cars), Edu Science (science related toys), Dream Dazzlers, (role play for girls), You and Me Dolls and Bruin (infant toys). It has also seven toy zones: the Girls' Favorites, Boys' Action and Adventure, R-Zone, Family Fun, Outdoor and Sports, Toys for Learning, and Fun and Babies "R" Us. Coates said the Bacolod branch is the fourth store they have opened in the country in the last six months. Other stores are located at Robinsons Galleria, Robinsons Place Lipa and Robinsons Place Metroeast. We hope to give lots of smiles to children in Bacolod.

The number of vehicles registered in Bacolod City in 2006 increased by 47.65 percent, with new registrations alone numbering more than 12,000 vehicles, figures of the Land Transportation Office 6 show.

Registered last year were 77,149 automobiles, from only 52,253 in 2006.

Of the total vehicles listed in 2006, 11,288 were cars; 24,967, utility vehicles; 2,151, sports utility vehicles; 9,389, trucks; 392, buses; 28,595, motorcycles and tricycles; and 367, trailers.

LTO Bacolod head Antonio Norman Saril said that although the most number of vehicles registered last year - both new and renewal - were motorcycles, the number of SUVs is also noticeable since Bacolod has the highest number of SUVs registered in Western Visayas.

Compared to Iloilo City, which has only 1,281 registered SUVs, Bacolod has close to 50 percent more at 2,151.

Since an SUV costs about P1.2 million, it means that more people in Bacolod can now afford to buy expensive vehicles, Saril said.

He added that at the rate the number of vehicles in the city is growing, LTO projects that by 2010, Bacolod will have 100,000 vehicles and Negros Occidental, about 126,000.

Saril said that considering this, Bacolod City and other cities and towns in Negros Occidental should be ready with their traffic management plans to ensure that the city and the province will avoid major traffic problems by then.

The number of vehicles grows as the population increases so we need to be prepared for this. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/12/businessnews1.htm)

SILAY CITY among RP's most competitive cities

AIM Policy Center on Pinoy Cities on the Rise showed that Silay ranked sixth among 38 mid-sized cities in the Philippines in the cost of doing business, which it attributed to affordable cost of power and water, low labor cost and affordable rental rate of commercial space.

The report said it is the perception of most businessmen in the city that the local government does not intervene in the activities of the business sector as long as they follow and comply with the rules and regulations. It added that the creation of one-stop-shop processing of taxes, licenses and permits is very helpful to businessmen of Silay and also noted skilled human resources, accessibility to good schools, well-managed traffic, reasonable business taxes and a "vibrant tourism"in Silay City.

While the airport is seen as bringing fast development. Under the category of Quality of Life, Silay also ranks seventh as indicated by the good peace and order situation. full story (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/13/businessnews2.htm)

Hi.. I'm new here, I lived in Bacolod 1975-77 (a very long time ago) and I'm re-visiting the city after 30 years this 1st week of March. One of the few places I like to see again is the UNO-R campus. Can somebody please post the latest pics of UNO-R where I gained a lot of friends... tnx

BTW, this thread is a very useful guide for Bacolod newbie visitors, though I can't understand the dialect very well nowadays.

Cebu Pacific to add Manila-Bacolod trips

Cebu Pacific said in a press release yesterday that it will increase its Manila-Bacolod flights from March 22 to June 12 to accommodate more passengers during the summer season.

During this period, the airline will have three to four Manila-Bacolod flights daily, with the additional service at 6 p.m., arriving in Bacolod at 7:05 p.m. The return flight from Bacolod will be at 7:35 p.m., reaching Manila at 8:40 p.m . The lowest fare for the route starts at P568.

Candice Iyog, Cebu Pacific marketing director, said they are increasing their flight capacity by more than 33 percent to fill the need for more seats during the summer.

This makes Cebu Pacific the biggest airline operator in Bacolod, in terms of flight frequencies, she said in the press release.

Iyog said that to get the lowest fares, passengers must plan their trips and book their flights ahead of time.

The lowest "Go" fares are available during Tuesdays and Wednesdays, she added. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/14/businessnews3.htm)

Convergys Will Expand in Bacolod
By Daxim Lucas
Inquirer (http://business.inquirer.net/money/breakingnews/view_article.php?article_id=49785)
Last updated 07:25am (Mla time) 02/16/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Business process outsourcing (BPO) firm Convergys Corp. will open its eighth call center facility in the Philippines in Cebu City as demand for voice-based services continues to grow worldwide, a company official said.

The facility will have as many as 700 employees, adding to the 500 at its pioneer Cebu office, Convergys executive vice president Clint Streit said.

In a news briefing in Makati City, the visiting Convergys official also unveiled plans to set up another call center facility in the Visayas, possibly in Bacolod City.

“We are looking at several sites, and Bacolod is one of the candidates,” he said, adding that the new call center would initially employ 450-500 call center agents.

Convergys is one of the largest call center firms in the country, with a staffing compliment of approximately 10,000 employees, which provide services ranging from credit card welcome and activation to case management and technical support for business-to-business and business-to-consumer uses.

Streit said the Cebu facility would become operational late in the first quarter of 2007, while the final decision on whether to locate what would be the firm’s ninth call center in Bacolod would be made either in the fourth quarter of 2007 or the first quarter of 2008.
On average, it costs the company $8,000-$10,000 a seat -- with all support facilities -- to set up a call center.

Streit said the Philippines had become the best-performing country in Converys' portfolio of operations worldwide, beating the output of its investments in India, which is the acknowledged world leader in BPO.

“The Philippines is the most profitable area for Convergys worldwide, so we will continue to support our operations and expansion activities here,” he said.

He declined to predict the full extent of the firm’s expansion program beyond the Bacolod site. With INQUIRER.net

Mayor studying filing of suit
vs. gov't center complainants
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The third district mayors of Negros Occidental did not join President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's political party, Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, to put up a candidate against incumbent Rep. Jose Carlos "Kako" Lacson of the Lakas party, Murcia Mayor Esteban Coscolluela, KAMPI third district chairman, said.

KAMPI has an alliance with Lakas and other political parties and we will not do anything to break it, we will not field a candidate for congressman, he said.

Board Member Reynaldo Depasucat who has said he may run for congressman of the third district was not among the Negros officials who took their oaths before KAMPI Monday at the Manila Hotel. Aside from Coscolluela the third district mayors who joined KAMPI are Severo Palanca - Victorias, Silay - Carlo Gamban, EB Magalona - Alfonso Gamboa and Talisay - Eric Saratan.

The third district mayors said they joined KAMPI because they believe in its vision and mission, a joint statement released by Coscolluela said.

Coscolluela said the speech made by President Arroyo during the party's national convention was very inspiring.

"We would like to echo President Arroyo's call that we should fight for the country and not among ourselves," Coscolluela said. He said that the third district mayors support Arroyo's national agenda that pushes for more jobs, stable prices, and peace and order.

"It jives with the vision of the Metro Third District mayors of establishing sustainable development in our respective area," Coscolluela said.

The mayors in the third district, Coscolluela said, agreed with the President that the political campaign for the May 14 polls should not divert their attention from expanding their education and healthcare programs.

Aside from the third district chairmen for KAMPI chapters in the rest of the districts, towns and cities if Negros Occidental were also named Monday, Provincial Chairman Melvin Ibañez announced.

Rep. Ignacio Arroyo (Neg. Occ., 5th district), KAMPI Western Visayas chairman, said those named KAMPI chairmen who are members of other political parties will not give up their original party affiliations. They will have "dual citizenships", he said.

Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon said he did not see the KAMPI appointment of chairmen in the province as a threat. "KAMPI might be preparing for a grand battle for the next election, not this election," he said.*CPG ::rofl:

^^ Hopefully our account will be there too... :D
But as according to insiders here in Convergys, they will focus first in Cebu. Banawa site may be expanded and so is the IT Park site. Bacolod might come in later. All of these plans have been delayed due to unknown reason here in CVG.

Mayor signs new loan agreement with PNB
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

BACOLOD City's hunt to find P400-million to fund the new government center project ended Monday afternoon after Mayor Evelio Leonardia signed a loan agreement with the Philippine National Bank (PNB).

The City Council, in a special session, unanimously approved a resolution authorizing Leonardia to enter into a contract with the bank for a P400-million loan.

Also, PNB officials promised to release 15 percent of the loan amount or about P59 million on Feb. 14 or, at least, within this week.

The amount is needed as a mobilization fund for the City.

In Monday's regular press conference, Leonardia could not help but lunge at his detractors saying the new government center project has become a fight between the good and the evil.

He refused to identify though the people, which he described as evil.

New contract

The signing of the new agreement was done at the City Council Session Hall after majority of the council held a special session and unanimously approved a resolution authorizing the mayor to immediately sign the contract.

Vice Mayor Renecito Novero said it (contract signing) was done due to the urgency of the situation but emphasized that the City has not rescinded its contract with the Land Bank of the Philippines.

"The contract with Landbank is still existing and its up to it whether or not to release the loan," Novero said, adding that what was approved in their session is that the City will only borrow P400 million for the project whether from LBP or PNB.

"We really need the amount in order to pay Hilmarc's Construction Corp. or else the City will be charged of breach of contract and may also face a lot of legal complications," Novero said.

Good and evil

On the other hand, Leonardia still failed to contain his emotion on the controversial project.

In his press conference Monday, Leonardia said the new case filed by former Talisay City Police chief Victor Eduardo at the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas was meant to terrorize and paralyze the Landbank of the Philippines (LBP) from granting the loan.

The mayor then said the issue on new government center is now a battle between the "good and the evil."

But asked who's the good and who's the evil, the mayor simply replied, "It depends on the people to judge who really is the evil who wanted to sabotage the project."

"What is sure is that the filing cases against us is definitely an orchestrated scheme to somehow block the realization of new government center," Leonardia said.

Nevertheless, the mayor said they are now assessing and evaluating the situation to find immediate solution to pursue the project.

The application for P400 million loan at PNB is just a preparation in case LBP won't grant the city's loan due to the present cases in court and Ombudsman.

The City's chief executive fears that in case the project won't be realized, Hilmarc's may file liquidated damages against the City Government.

And based on computation, Hilmarc's has already delivered construction materials from Manila worth P30 million while consummated works was estimated at P10 million.

"If this happens, then the project will end up to nothing," Leonardia said.

He said they are now exploring all possibilities to arrest problem and that he asked the council to decide on the matter especially on the loan application at PNB.

Risks to face

Leonardia said what's happening on the project are considered "risks to face" duly created by external forces serving as "diligent political saboteurs."

The mayor is not also blaming the City Legal Office or any of his political lieutenants on the banks' decision of withholding the loan.

According to City Legal Officer Allan Zamora LBP has the right to withhold the loan if a case will filed against the project as stipulated in the contract.

"What is new here is that based on records, this was the first time that Lankbank invoked the particular law and Bacolod might be the first victim," Zamora told mediamen.

Both Leonardia and Zamora, however, refuse to admit that the present situation can be considered as first "technical knock-out" (TKO) for the City caused by Bacolod Lone District Representative Monico Puentevella.

This as Puentevella was earlier accused as behind the present brouhaha on the new government center.

Puentevella denied the accusation and instead advised the mayor's camp to focus on the case or cases filed against them and let the court decide on the matter.

De javu

Leonardia, on the hand, stressed that he is unfazed by the two cases filed against him on the project.

He instead considered these cases as "de javu," recalling the same situation that happened during his first stint as mayor of Bacolod in 1995 to 1998.

"That time, I was also accused of a more or less 20 cases but all were dismissed by the court and the Ombudsman," Leonardia said.

And because of those issues against him, Leonardia lost to Oscar Verdeflor in 1998. But later, all those cases were also dismissed.

"I am confident that I'll be vindicated soon because I believe that all these new cases filed against me will also be dismissed," the mayor said.

Nope, SM is bigger, and not just becuase its sprawling, i already went inside eh, Robinsons only has 120+ stores, SM city will have 200+ stores. if this wasnt reclaimed area and if they stacked the sprawling buildings & made this a high riser, it wud be the equivalent of a four-storey building, you could say it wud be like Robinsons, except that the lobby is very wide, twice as wide as Robinsons and with an extra Floor, ill post my pictures tommorow or on Friday

P.S. LOL, and as usual McDonalds and Jollibee are the first stores that are already finished inside SM
continuing their perpetual Food battle with one another, Mcdonalds is located at the front
area of the North building, while Jollibee is also at the front area, but in the South Building

IT Team intensifies manpower pooling

The Bacolod Information Technology Team is intensifying its efforts to strengthen the local manpower pool to prepare for the entry of more IT locators in the city and the province.

Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of the Bacolod IT Team, said yesterday that during the e-Services 2007 in Manila last week, the Commission on Information and Communications cited the need for efforts to sustain the supply of human resources for the industry's growth.

She said the Bacolod IT Team will also visit colleges and universities to give lectures and trainings on improving their IT curricula.

At the e-Services 2007, Batapa-Sigue said Trade Undersecretary Carissa Cruz-Evangelista commended Bacolod for rapidly achieving results in IT hub development since last's years e-Services.

Cruz-Evangelista only learned then that the city already hosts several call centers and now has 8 IT zones accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, two of them already proclaimed as IT parks and another two, as IT buildings. full story (http://visayandailystar.com/2007/February/20/businessnews1.htm)

It is a harvest thanksgiving celebration to the Gods of the elements after a bountiful harvest by the ancients in "Buglas" by the people of La Carlota City. Held every Sunday nearest the first of May or Labor Day, is a harvest thanksgiving celebration by the people of La Carlota City. The festival is based on an age-old practice of offering thanksgiving to the god of agricutlure living inside Kanlaon Volcano. The celebration features an Ecumenical Thanksgiving mass, games, sportsfests, agro-industrial fair, and streetdancing competition with “tribes” dressed in indigenous materials and swaying to the beat of Sambita. The celebration is capped with the selection of Ginoong Pasalamat and Pasalamat Queen. La Carlota City is 42 kilometers southeast of Bacolod. City.

Bacolaodiat Fests tarts tomorrow

It's all systems go for the second Bacolaodiat Festival that kicks off tomorrow in Bacolod City, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said yesterday.

Leonardia said he takes special interest in the three-day festival since it was he who suggested last year that a Chinese festival be held in Bacolod City. He said he is happy that he had been an instrument in uniting the Chinese community in the city.

The Bacolaodiat Festival starts tomorrow and will be highlighted by a fireworks display at the Bacolod Public Plaza at 9 p.m. Leonardia is inviting the people of Bacolod and those from nearby towns and cities to come to the Bacolod Public Plaza on Saturday to witness the biggest and longest fireworks display worth P200,000, to be sponsored by SM City.

"I hope we are starting a tradition by having a fireworks display to highlight the festival," Leonardia said. The Bacolaodiat Festival, which carries the theme "Harmony in Diversity" opens with the Chinese photo exhibit at 10 a.m. Friday at Robinson's Place, followed by the opening of the night market and chopsticks alley at 3 p.m. at the Bacolod plaza, and a grand cultural parade from the Paglaum Sports Complex to the plaza at 4 p.m.

Cebu Consul General of the People's Republic of China. Cui LouSheng along with other dignitaries will grace the opening ceremony at the plaza at 5 p.m. which will be followed by a cultural program that will feature the fusion of Chinese dances and songs.

Ambassador Eduardo "Danding" Cojuangco Jr. will be conferred the honors of an adopted son of the Negros Tsinoy at the St. John's Activity Center at 7 p.m. On Saturday, a Chinese martial arts exercise by Tai-Chi, Taekwondo and Karate instructors will be held at the Bacolod plaza at 7 a.m.

A Bacolaodiat cookfest will be held at 10 a.m. at the Fountain Area of Robinson's Place and the second Mayor Bing Leonardia's Marching Bands in Rhythm, a competition of marching bands representing the public schools and barangays, will be held from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bacolod plaza.
A variety show will be held at the plaza at 9 p.m. which will be followed by fireworks display at 9 p.m. On Sunday, a "cheer dance" will start at 8 a.m., which is a whole-day affair of the Bacolod City Tourism Office. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/22/topstory7.htm)

'A fun-filled night in Bacolod'

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/cosmosnegros/riverside_hospitalsouthwingnightbac.jpg
(SHOPPING CENTER, BACOLOD)

One of the great pleasures of living in Bacolod is the vibrant nightlife where you enjoy seeing old and new friends, all with a zest for living and having fun. This was even more apparent last Valentines Day when most of the restaurants were filled with people: entire families with kids, couples, lovers and groups of friends.

Knowing that traffic would be horrendous at night, our group led by Dr Ver Lacson and his kids Summer and Ken, together with Manang Alice and Marilyn Lopez set off early, hoping to find a convenient parking space. Alas, we soon found out that lots of folks had the same idea in mind and it was a mad scramble looking for a place to park.

Valentine's dinner was at the ritzy, glitzy L'Fisher Hotel which was overflowing with the beautiful people of Bacolod. By the time we arrived, the hotel lobby was already filled with diners who came for the excellent buffet and the evening's entertainment - the Kulay Pikata singing group. Everyone enjoyed the gastronomical delights while being serenaded with romantic love songs by the balladeers.

After dinner, the night was still young and so our next destination was the Valentines Celebration of the Bacolod Sampaguita Lion's Club at Sipango, where we were invited by former club president Perla Leonardia. The elegant ladies of the club were at the dance floor dancing the night away and having the time of their lives. It was a joy to see them tripping the light fantastic with such grace and style. Before I could catch my breath, my good friend Lydia Tison insisted that I dance with her DI. (Boy, was that fun!).

We were told that these kindhearted ladies have found a way to use their favorite pastime - dancing, to generate funds for their charitable projects. What a beautiful way to celebrate the day of love! Kudos to the members, especially the club presidents (past and present), for a most successful affair!

Having new planes, don't always mean that the newer one is safer. I think that Boeing 737's are still safer than A319/320's... which is probably why Boeing still hasn't replaced it with a new model. Whenever I fly with PAL, I try to make sure that I am flying in a 737 and not an Airbus. B737's are still being flown by almost all of the world's airlines, including third world and former Eastern Block countries. These countries are known for their total lack of regard for safety, and yet those B737's still continue flying with few accidents caused by negligence and pilot error. I don't think that the A320 is capable of taking that kind of abuse.

^^ Well, we have different points of view. This is a multi-perspective world. I rode CebuPacific because I just wanted to go to my destination ASAP. Whenever I have the luxury of money, then I'll go PAL (I miss their Choco Cake served with iced tea). But I'm very conscious about money matters.

For me, 5J is ok. PR is ok. 2P is ok. 6k is ok. I'm not choosy because I'm a backpacker myself, hehehe! That will apply in every mode of transportation (even on land) except when taking long-haul ferry rides like SuperFerry or NN, I always take Tourist or BizClass. :D

That's why its an LCC. Reaching destination without any frills.

'Convert city airport into economic zone'

A resolution urging the President to seriously consider the transformation of the area occupied by the present Bacolod City Airport into a special economic zone so the city can avail of the benefits of R.A. 7916 was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

R.A. 7916 or the Special Economic Zone Act of 1995, could provide investment promotions, employment creation and export generation for the people of Bacolod, Negros Occidental and the whole Western Visayas region, the resolution said.

The Committee on Communications and Energy chaired by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue was tasked to recommend the development of an economic zone within the City of Bacolod in order to improve its economic situation and that of the Province of Negros Occidental, as well, as the whole Region 6.

The resolution said the SP believes that the present Bacolod Airport site is viable for an ecozone since it will no longer be operational once the new Bacolod Airport in Silay City starts operations. Based on international standards, it is not possible to maintain two airports because of limitation of the distance between two air transport control towers or acrodomes.

The site is reportedly 37 hectares, while the Philippine Economic Zones Authority requires that an area should be at least 25 hectares in order to be an ecozone. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/23/businessnews1.htm)

That is why I NEVER EVER ride a plane when going anywhere, wether it has crappy service, good service, great planes, crappy planes in third or first world countries, i get scared shitless when it comes to riding a plane
(childhood trauma) I always make it a point to ride either Ships, ferries or trains, and when its cross continent travel i take a cruiseship then ride a cross country train or ferry. They say the plane is the safest form of travel, people say that there are way more automobile related accidents compared to plane related accidents, well thats true cos there are different types of automobile related accidents, from simple fender benders to fatal crashes, so the plane cant afford anything less than being the safest cos the minute an accident happens aboard an airline...your dead, not all the time but most of the time, i mean your flying 30,000 feet up, every plane accident will likely be very serious or fatal

Traffic experiment set

A 45-day traffic experiment will be conducted in major thoroughfares of Bacolod City starting tomorrow, Insp. Levy Pangue, head of the Bacolod Traffic Management Unit.

Pangue said the Sangguniang Panlungsod has approved his request for the traffic re-routing, which is aimed to review and propose amendments and revisions of the vehicular flow in the city.

He said he is reminding the passengers and drivers that there will re-direction of routes including those in Mansilingan-Central; Villamonte-Central Market; Tangub-Central Market; Airport-Singcang-Central Market and Magsungay-Central Market.

On Monday, there will also be changes in the routes of Bata-Libertad and Shopping "La Salle" -Libertad jeepneys.

He said the re-directing of routes in the central commercial district of the city is the result of the opening of SM Bacolod on March 2.

Meanwhile, Acting Bacolod City police director Senior Supt. Ronilo Quebrar said he is asking for the cooperation of the commuters and drivers in the dry run for the new traffic routes. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/23/topstory11.htm)
