guys!!!!!! any new pics of Bacolod International airport?....

wish Bacolod could also feature future projects so anyone can have something to look forward to...i noticed that The City Government doent really give so much emphasis in promoting Bacolod...unlike other cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and CDO...I'm just hoping they could come up with a website where you can see everything that showcases the treasures of Bacolod/Negros...

by the way, what will happen to the old airport in case the new one will start to operate?....

will Ayala land put up a mall here?....

the Bacolod domestic airport they will make it an EcoZone. Manufacturing and offices purposes.

If the Ayala Land will finish all their projects in Talisay City, then maybe they will put up their mall adjacent to their residential areas. as I heard to the other. pero matagalan pa yon.

When is that other condominium building going to be built?

^^^^ yeah i like that mural, it really gives off the escence of bacolod, But i can only admire it for only a minute or so, cos the combination of strong airconditioners and paint fumes is murder on my nose, i only go there from time to time to check on my store, anyway, before, I always complained that the ceiling of our malls here wer way to low and lobbies too narrow, the lobby width in SM is ok, but the ceiling is way too high, what a waste of space, they should have just put up a second floor or a basement

What if I belong to them, would you say that in my face? What if your family came from those who you said with those remarks and I felt awful whenever someone say those remarks. I do not allow the servants to watch tagalog shows as most of these shows are just crap and I don't want our servants to behave like typical servants who just can't help but get too elated when they see actors and actresses. They are just people too... they are not to be worshipped in any way whatsoever.

But you don't have to be so strict about it. This is a democratic country and everyone has the title to be themselves. Discipline is also needed but do not supress on what they wanted. I know its crappy but can you stop them from watching?

And "servants"? Why use the term "servants"? Are you implying that these people that you are referring to are somewhere in the low-level tier of the society? Hampas Lupa?! They are people too. They have every right to be entertained!

I couldn't call them maids and drivers. That would be even worse right? I guess the right word is employees. Did I say Tagalog movies? There are some good Tagalog movies, but there aren't any good Tagalog shows. Hope you get the difference. I guess the American's also have very crappy shows, but they do have good shows on CNN, and other channels. Tagalog shows are just crap.

Point is, this is not about Colonial mentality... This is about improving the state of our nation. The businesses should stop sponsoring this shows as they are not very productive. People watch these shows because they think they can make their lives better by winning in one of these shows. They put all their time and resources into participating in these shows through SMS and travelling all the way to Manila or other venues to participate. They could better spend their time being productive by working or thinking of ways to make money in a respectable way.

These pointless shows just give false hope to an already poor and impoverished sector of our society and we must take action to stop this from continuing. The money they spend for this just goes into the pockets of a few unsrupulous people and has no benefit whatsoever to our population.

We have to do everything we can to drive these crappy shows into the ground by not giving them an audience in Negros and the whole country if possible. If we continue to allow these shows, we can expect our people to keep acting like idiots. I can choose not to allow the employees to watch these shows because they are working for me and supposed to be working anyway and I am not gonna be paying them to watch stupid shows in my properties.

Bo B,

You cannot change the mindset of the masses in an instant. That mindset was molded through their upbringing, education and social exposure. Your exposure is different.

I was brought up poor but was able to go to a good school because my parents spared no money for our education. I myself do not watch "crappy" films especially local slopstick comedy. But that did not happen overnight.

Kung gusto mo talaga sila bigyan ng magandang exposure, better siguro that they are educated well and given more opportunities in life. It is our politicians and elite who made them remain that way. So, please, if you are revolted at their kabakyaan, do not blame them. It is not fair.

wow... amo lang ni mahambal ko...

i grew up the quatter kids as my playmate, i lived in a squatters area. its just that i was so lucky that my parents brought me to a good school. but even if i have already attained an education in a "Class A" school, i still do not look down at these so-called squatters.

bisan kada puli ko sa bacolod, i still get to talk to them, and treat them, like the way i treat rich people.

i jaz hope that this treatment of diving the people into social classes would finally end. We are not in India, we dont have the Caste system here, nor we are in Africa where they used to practice Apartheid.

I can choose not to allow the employees to watch these shows because they are working for me and supposed to be working anyway and I am not gonna be paying them to watch stupid shows in my properties.

well said!

SM City Bacolod Opens
By , 27 Feb 2007
Source: Manila Times

The western Visayas region will have its own version of the iconic Mall of Asia when SM City Bacolod opens its door to the public on Friday March 2. It is SM Prime Holdings'28th supermall, and will serve customers in this dynamic hub of trade, education and government services in Negros Occidental.

Located on 16 -hectare property across Rizal Street, the 60,000 sq.m mall will bring SM''s shopping leisure to Bacolod City, as well as Negros Occidental and nearby provinces. Like the Mall of Asia, which has a spectacular view of scenic Manila bay, SM City Bacolod is located in the harbor of Guimaras Strait. This will give mall goers the added attraction of fresh air and breath taking view of this busy waterway.

This single-level retail and entertainment center consist of two separate buildings connected by a bridgeway, Buildings A includes SM Supermarket, selected anchor stores, other retail stores, four cinemas and outdoor dining facilities. Building B, on the other, has the SM Department Store as its major anchor, and includes the SM foodcourt, the entertainment area, stores and restaurants, and outdoor dining areas.

SM City Bacolod is a mall of many new concepts; a bridgeway highlights the architectural structure, unifying design of two buildings, making it the first of its kind among SM Malls. It welcome customers with a six-sided grand facade with 10 SM signages all around.

The mall's interiors are equally compelling- high ceiling and colorful murals inspired by Bacolod's world famous Maskara Festival and designed by director Fritz Infante.

SM Bacolod will have about 200 tenants, including SM anchors, fashion boutiques, show and home stores, and computer stores. Apart from the foodcourt, it also has local and international fast food chains, food retailers and specialty restaurant. It will have major international and Manila based brands, as well as homegrown retailers and restaurants.

Some of the mall's attraction include an al fresco dining area call the Fiesta Strip on both sides of Rizal Street, an event center for premiere events, and a theater that can be converted as a venue for concerts, plays, product launches, conventions.

For customer convenience, SM City Bacolod has ample parking for 1,000 cars and 300 motorcycles. It also has two transport terminals, as well as a Travelers Lounge with a ferry ticket counter, waiting area, baggage counter, and hot and cold shower.

The mall is also handicapped friendly with ramps, railings, and elevators as wells as breastfeeding friendly with a room for nursing mothers.

Environmentally concerned like other SM Malls. It also has sewage treatment plant that recycles water, and is the only mall in Bacolod, which utilizes waterless urinals in all its male restrooms.

SM City Bacolod's design team includes Design associates, Design Architect, WV Coscolluela and Associates, Architect of Record; DA Abcede and Associates, Project Manager, and Monolith Construction and Development Corporation.

SM Prime to open 28th mall on March 2
02/28/2007 | 02:46 PM

Listed mall operator SM Prime Holdings Inc. on Wednesday said it will open its 28th mall in the country on March 2, in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

In a statement sent to the Philippine Stock Exchange, SM Prime said SM City Bacolod will be its third mall in the Visayas, after SM City Iloilo and SM City Cebu.

This is the first mall the firm will open this year.

“Bacolod City was cited for having the most business-friendly local government unit in the Visayas for 2006. The city currently hosts several multinational BPO and ICT companies. Furthermore, it has a vibrant tourism industry. Its local cuisine is one of the Philippines’ best. These attributes make Bacolod City an ideal and suitable location for an SM Prime mall," SM Prime president Hans Sy said in the statement.

SM Prime is a unit of SM Investments Corp., the holding firm of the country’s richest man Henry Sy.

O_o !, you know i wasnt really expecting the sub-topic about our local shows, celebs and fans to go this far  anyway, if i may have said anything that was a bit over the line that triggered this chain reaction of opinions then i apologize, i guess i just didnt make myself clear, when i said the insensitive-blah blah thing about our fans, i wasnt generalizing, i was only pin pointing certain fans here who have this inability to keep their poise, composure, and control their emotions when theyre in a public place, i understand devoted fans but there are just some who take it to a whole new level almost reaching extreme obsession.

i guess theres a reason why our local shows or movies will never improve
(intelect/story-wise) with complex plots and storylines with a lot of twists, and its because the majority of our local movie/TV viewers here are the masa so they, are the target market, so i guess its smart business in the part of the movie producers to make shows based on the market majority, and i guess the others will just have to live with it.

P.S. I'm a big anime fan and i have realized that this "Super twins" thingy by GMA seems to me like a rip-off from "Pretty Cure"

and second im still w8ing for someone to tell me what in Gods green earth does "KILIG" mean? is it some kind of expression?

SM Prime Opens 3rd Mall in the Visayas with SM City Bacolod
By , 28 Feb 2007
Source: SM Prime Holdings, Inc.
SM Prime Holdings, Inc. (“SM Prime”) will open SM City Bacolod, its third mall in the Visayas, on 02 March 2007, in addition to existing SM City Iloilo and SM City Cebu. SM City Bacolod, which is located at the Reclamation Area, has a gross floor area of 59,023 sqm divided between two main structures, namely Buildings A and B.

SM City Bacolod will have, among others, an SM Department Store, an SM Hypermarket, a food court, and four cinemas. Other mall tenants include fast food chains Jollibee, McDonald’s, and KFC. Notably, there are Bacolod-based tenants such as steakhouse Cattlefarm, Japanese restaurant L Kaiseh, and food outlets Chicken Deli and Bob’s.

SM Prime President Mr. Hans Sy said: “Bacolod City was cited for having the most business-friendly local government unit in the Visayas for 2006. The city currently hosts several multinational BPO and ICT companies. Furthermore, it has a vibrant tourism industry, with the world famous Maskara Festival among its major attractions. Its local cuisine is one of the Philippines’ best. These attributes make Bacolod City an ideal and suitable location for an SM Prime mall. And so, we open our doors in SM City Bacolod, the newest member of our still expanding family of SM Prime malls.”

Bacolod City is the capital and the largest city in the province of Negros Occidental, the Philippines’ sugar bowl. The city, with a population of nearly 450,000, is a hall of fame awardee as the cleanest and greenest urbanized city in the country. It is home to a number of universities and colleges, and is the gateway to the other cities and towns within the province.

SM City Bacolod is the very first SM Prime mall to open this year. Last year, the company opened SM City Sta. Rosa, SM City Clark, SM Supercenter Pasig, SM City Lipa, and the highly successful SM Mall of Asia. It also expanded SM City North Edsa with the addition of The Block. The opening of SM City Bacolod brings the total number of SM Prime malls to 28 nationwide, with a combined gross floor area of 3.6 million sqm.

For the rest of 2007, SM Prime is scheduled to inaugurate SM Taytay, SM Muntinlupa and The Sunset Strip in front of the Entertainment Mall of the SM Mall of Asia. It is also expanding SM City Cebu, SM City Pampanga, and SM City Fairview.

SM Prime is a subsidiary of holding company SM Investments Corporation.

I drove through SM today (beneath the 2 bridgeway). Whoa, this SM is different from the SM malls i have seen so far.

Though the mall space is small relative to other SM malls, its land area is huge. I guess parking will not be a problem. I cant wait to see what this mall has to offer. It seems there is an entertainment strip similar to Megastrip? So, there might be an area where there are night restos? I hope. Cant wait to eat Yellow Cab - Charlie Chan pasta, mmmm!!!!! I really hope Starbucks will seriously consider opening an outlet. Maybe 1 both in Iloilo and Bacolod para financially feasible.

Hopefully they will have Merci or Bong-Bong or any other Pasalubong Centers open here so that the people who are having a stop over in Bacolod won't have to go further.

Anyway, regarding Starbucks, it may be feasible for Bacolod but it might be far fetched for Iloilo as of yet. But hopefully they do consider investing in these Western Visayas cities.

SM set to open Bacolod City mall

Inquirer
Last updated 05:19am (Mla time) 03/01/2007

BACOLOD CITY, Philippines -- Mall developer SM Prime Holdings Inc. will open on Friday a shopping mall in the city, its 29th.

The 60,000-square-meter SM City Bacolod is on a 16-hectare property at a reclaimed area near the harbor of Guimaras Strait.

This year, SM Prime plans to spend P7 billion on building four malls and expanding three others.

To open later this year are SM City Taytay, SM Supercenter Muntinlupa and a strip mall called the Sunset Strip at the Esplanade, fronting the Manila Bay and near the SM chain's largest, Mall of Asia.

SM Bacolod has a supermarket, cinemas and restaurants.

I think the Bacolod market is too saturated with excellent cafe's that have been too well established. If Starbucks wants to put up one in Bacolod, they have to put up a stand alone as cafe's in malls are not so popular in the city. I think Iloilo needs a Starbucks more than Bacolod as there aren't too many around last time I visited just over a month ago.

Merci store to open at SM City

Merci Pasalubong Center is opening its fourth branch at SM City Bacolod.

The store carries the company's complete line of "pasalubong" treats and products of other Negros producers.

The store will be located at the ground floor, SM Building B, beside the Food Court.

Merci Pasalubong Center also has branches in Singcang, Mandalagan, and in the South Terminal.

add this to the few instances where we agree dinho :D

i think so too, Bacolod has many good cafe's (especially for its population size) Coffee Bean, Cuppa, Calea, Bos, not to mention Cafe Bobs which are aplenty :)

though starbucks can be accomodated if they want to (or if the market is really strong) or they can just enter and well..kill 1 cafe? :) naaah, from what ive observed, the coffee shops in bacolod are quite profitable so maybe sb can still be accomodated

dunno about iloilo though..darn, id really like to see iloilo (as ive already been to the other great cities of Vizmin: Cebu, Cdeo and Bacolod)

HENRY Sy Sr., dubbed as Asia's "Retail King," is due in Bacolod Thursday for the blessing and inauguration of the SM City-Bacolod at the Reclamation area.

Official opening will be on Friday with various movie and television stars to be led by famous John Lloyd Cruz and Bea Alonzo as guests.

SM City-Bacolod, on the other hand, is one of the four new malls to be opened by SM Prime Holdings Inc. under its P7 billion capital expenditures this year.

Considered a tycoon of Asia, the 83-year-old Sy, according to 2006 Forbes Magazine, ranks as the 14th richest person in Southeast Asia.

Sy and family, on the other hand, ranked the 74th richest in the "Asia and Australia" region, and 512th richest in the world.

In 2005 Forbes Magazine World's Richest People list, Sy as the second wealthiest man in the Philippines and 355th in the world.

Briefly, please could you tell us a bit about yourself?
(A good place to promote your blog. If you'd like a photo of yourself included in the interview, please just attach it to the email)
I’m Enrico Dee 28 years old, working as a Technical Support Engineer in Makati City, Philippines. I took up Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in University of Saint La Salle in Bacolod City. One of my greatest passions in life is traveling. During free time, I usually travel from one city to another, exploring its wonderful sights and appreciating the city’s local history and culture. I also love seeing the various festivals of the Philippines. These festivals showcase the unique and colorful life of the people in our country. I have traveled the northern Philippines up to Laoag City in the province of Ilocos Norte, 500 kilometers north of Manila, down to the province of Basilan in Mindanao, some 900 kilometers south of Manila. All of these journeys are documented in my travel blog called “BYAHILO: Your Journey Begins Here” at http://www.byahilo.com. Byahilo is a combination of two Filipino words “Byahe” meaning to travel, and “Hilo” meaning nausea. Literally, byahilo means a travel sickness.

How long have you lived in the Philippines? I have lived in the Philippines for 28 years. I was born and raised in Bacolod City, some 600 kilometers south of Manila for 24 years, then in 2003, I moved residency to Makati City, Metro Manila.
What do you like most about living in the Philippines? The Philippines has just so much to offer. There are 7,107 islands in our country. 7,107 ways to enjoy the sun, sea and sand. More than a thousand ways to marvel at the great architectural masterpieces. More than a hundred ways to learn our historic past. There’s always something new everyday. You will never run out of adventure here in the Philippines.
Is there anything you do not like about living in t he Philippines? The politics, like in any other country, is dragging the progress of our country to a standstill. The horrendous traffic jam in Metro Manila during peak hours. The traffic jam in Manila is second only to Bangkok’s.
Why should travellers visit the Philippines? The Philippines is made of 7,107 islands. White sand beaches are all over the archipelago. Fantastic view of the sunrise and the sunset. We have the most perfect cone volcano. The Philippines is home to hundreds of animals endemic only to the islands. We have colonial houses, churches and even cemeteries of outstanding architecture that are centuries old and are well-preserved. Many of our sites have already been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Filipinos are noted as one of the most hospitable in the world. We are known for our friendly smiles and warm welcome. There is no month in the Philippines that has no fiesta. This is because we Filipinos love to celebrate and we live life to its fullest.
What do you wish travellers would do when they visit t he Philippines? Ride a jeepney. The jeepney is the Philippine’s main mode of transportation. Costs cheaper than cab. Also try to ride a calesa. A calesa is a horse-drawn carriage. This type of transporation is very common during the time when the Philippines was still part of Spain. But there are still parts of the Philippines, especially in Manila where calesas are still being used. Enjoy the sun, sea, and sand in Boracay. It’s an island in the central Philippines known for its white, powdery sand beach. Explore the cool weather of the northern Philippines by going to the Banaue Rice Terraces and see how the Igorot tribe plants rice. Marvel at the beauty of the Honda Bay and the St. Paul Underground River in Palawan. Known as one of the longest underwater rivers in the world. Walk through the historic streets of Intramuros in Manila. Intramuros is also known as the “Walled city of Manila”.
What do you wish travellers would stop doing when they visit the Philippines?
If a visitor had time to do or see only one thing in the Philippines, what should it be? Visit Palawan. In Plawan everything’s already there. This province is also known as the last frontier of the Philippines. Palawan is also known as the cradle of the Philippine Civilization. Enjoy the white sand beaches in Honda Bay. Explore the nature’s beauty in Tubbataha Reef, and the St. Paul’s Underground River, both declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Marvel at the unique limestone formations, and dive the sunken ships in Coron.
If a visitor had time for only one meal in the Philippines, which dish would you recommend?
(e.g. a regional dish) – I think it’s going to be the “Balut”. Balut is a boiled fertilized duck egg, seasoned with salt and vinegar. Usually the liquid part of egg is sucked out first. The duck embryo next to be consumed, then the yolk, and finally, the egg white. Many people also consider balut as an aphrodisiac. Balut is available all over the Philippines, but the town of Pateros is known for mass-producing this commodity.
Do you have any other insider tips for visitors to the Philippines? Just don’t listen to any negative travel advisories about the Philippines. The media is always exaggerating what’s really happening in our country. The Philippines is a very peaceful country. Resorts and public places are always secured. There’s no need for you to worry about your security.

na notice ko lang before.. when i was still living in iloilo, mas "Cofee drinkers" mga iloilo sa iloilo compared to bacolod.

dunno. may bacoleños jaz use cafe's as a social status meter, in short "just to be seen". while those in iloilo really drink coffee, because they need to...

that's because you haven't met me or one of my barkadas...

I'am a coffee junkie... :colgate:

;11956854']add this to the few instances where we agree dinho :D

i think so too, Bacolod has many good cafe's (especially for its population size) Coffee Bean, Cuppa, Calea, Bos, not to mention Cafe Bobs which are aplenty :)

though starbucks can be accomodated if they want to (or if the market is really strong) or they can just enter and well..kill 1 cafe? :) naaah, from what ive observed, the coffee shops in bacolod are quite profitable so maybe sb can still be accomodated

dunno about iloilo though..darn, id really like to see iloilo (as ive already been to the other great cities of Vizmin: Cebu, Cdeo and Bacolod)

well, only if somebody would franchise it, Gloria jean's already opened its store at casino filipino and its 200 pesos a cup,..but the coffee is good.

If somone locally had a taste for starbucks,.. maybe someone would franchise it, but I doubt it oh well...

Negros Occidental will play host to the First National Arts Fair to be held on February 28 to March 4, 2007 here in Bacolod City. This five-day event, held in cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and Arts, the Negros Cultural Foundation, and the Province of Negros Occidental, will gather gallery owners, collectors, art brokers and artists around the country. Aside from being an avenue for gallery owners and artists to display and sell their artworks, the event will also feature a series of symposia on art-related topics, experts and leading patrons will give talks about various issues; workshops and demos intended to enhance skills related to art and arts management; and experiences including performances and alternative artistic endeavors. I disagree with Eric's statement. I and most people I know do not go to the cafe just to be seen, but rather, I'd say that it is a great place to see old friends and acquaintances. Whenever I need to see somebody, I would just drive to their favorite place at a particular time as I know that they are likely to be there. Why pay Smart or Globe when seeing friends face to face is better?

thank you....took that pictures this afternoon...too bad i wasnt able to take some pics along the bridge......SM city Bacolod is just a single level mall and the one that serves as the 2nd level are the bridges. :)

Its one of a kind...I love the SM mall here...just enough for Bacolod people to enjoy...but the architecture is really good....simple yet elegant so to speak...the mall really reflects how classy Bacolod people can be. :) hehehehehe

Precisely!!!! coffee shop is a place where you can spend ample time to chat with friends....sitting down with a cup of coffee or frap on your table is enough to navigate a great conversation. :) And Bacolod people doesnt care much about the price...for as along as theyre having a wonderful time and satisfied, they will surely go for it...

yes, the theaters are at the ground floor and its far different from the silverscreens of SM malls....it looks like the one in Rockwell and gateway...Actually the one who officiated the ribbon cutting says that SM Bacolod is the second Largest Land area next to Mall of asia...and they call SM bacolod as the iconic MOA of the visayas...They still have plans of putting up a next building in the near future. They have remaining four blocks behind SM mall...they will probably use it for their annex or their convention center. :)

Congratulations Enrico. That was good. I think Balut is not something we should promote too much. We had several visitors from the USA that got sick because of somebody (I think the driver) pushed them to try it. When we went to their place in Chicago several years later, they still remembered the Balut incident.

Why don't we all take a roadtrip around Negros on or around October this year so that we can build up a compilation of pictures of Negros? What do you guys think?

This shows that SM is really great factor for both the City's and Province's tourism promotions. source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/03/02/news/sm.city.bacolod.opens.html)

I wouldn't go far as to say Iloilo NEEDs Starbucks, there's some nice cafes here too just like Bacolod. Maybe not as pricey or as "sosyal" (where you have to dress up before going to these places) but there's some quality classic and specialty coffee here in Iloilo too.

BTW, SM Bacolod looks very nice. Can't wait to visit it this summer .... I might be going to Kanlaon, Kabankalan's Mag-Aso Falls, or Sipalay or all of them!!!.

INVESTORS' CONFIDENCE

Leonardia said he welcomes the entry of Shoe Mart and that he has seen how the people anticipated this. We can feel the excitement in the air so SM must be congratulated for this architectural achievement, he said. "But more than an architectural wonder, this place for me is a symbol of investors' confidence in Bacolod City".

Leonardia said that if Henry Sy can trust his money in Bacolod, then there must be something here. "This is a further validation of the title bestowed upon us by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry that Bacolod is the Most Business Friendly City in the Visayas".

Leonardia said "We are given this opportunity to move in, to ride on this momentum and it is up to us to sustain, maintain and see to it that there is continuity in the growth and progress of Bacolod."

He said he would like to see the people think in very positive ways. "We know that if Shoe Mart grows in Bacolod, the city will grow with it. And if Bacolod grows, all the others will also grow.

In terms of taxes, the entry of Shoe Mart eventually means resources for the government to be able to serve the rest of the population. source (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/March/02/topstory1.htm)

I was insulted by the way you think with these people...please reconsider that we are not the only ones who are viewing the thread. It may give an impression of matapobre, to people who are viewing it not just only you but the rest of the thread and the locale that you're representing as well.

Parts grabe ka. Bilib ko sa imo.

You better watch your words. Basi mapulihan ka naman diri.

Bacolod gets award, RDC chair lauds Bing

The Bacolod Local Council for the Protection of Children chaired by Mayor Evelio "Bing" Leonardia was the first-runner up in the National Search for the Most Child-Friendly City in the highly urbanized city category.

"I hope Bing is reelected because I believe in his politics of performance," Perez said at the RDC meeting in Bacolod. Perez said she strongly endorses Leonardia in her personal capacity. Mitch Navaels of the Early Childhood Development of Manila, said Bacolod has the most number of five-star day care centers in the country. full storey (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/February/24/topstory11.htm)

@the one who posted "servants"

I'm just restraining myself from getting the rage out of it. I cannot call them "servants" and I would never allow anyone to degrade people due to their preferences, looks or race.

I wouldn't even try to restrain them from watching those "crappy" Tagalog movies. As if these people like the works of Picasso or what. Slap out of reality, go to the countryside! Do you think these people has time to watch "Il Postino" or Tyra Banks while most of them haven't finished high school due to poverty?

I say, I'm not in favor in restraining these "employees" you're saying in watching those crappy Tagalog movies. I let them watch those and in turn, watch with them. This is just a simple act. I never adhere in the ideas of tyranny. I prefered to be "loved" than "feared". I believe in "karma".

Remember, Gallaga's "Oro Plata Mata"....?

**Twenty years has passed since the days of death, hunger and chaos engulfed Bacolod and Negros Occidental. Many suffered yet many have learned to survive and live another day. Learned from their past mistakes, uplifting themselves, therefore giving what is now a progressive city and province.

Know what, there is always an A, B, C, D and E market. Not all C,D & E are jologs in the same manner that not all A & B have good taste.

In the early years of Studio 23, they used English exclusively as their medium. Look what happened. If not for the UAAP, it might have gone belly up. They had to adjust. Ano nangyari, "Studio 23, Kabarkada Mo." Pati morning show nila, tinagalog na nila. Ang mga host, nagpupumilit mag tagalog. Pero, naging jologs ba sila? HINDI. Naging maka masa ba sila? They tried to reach out.

People who understand better should be the one to adjust, and do not force somebody who has lesser exposure in life to understand you. Kasi nga ikaw ang mas nakakaintindi. Hindi maiintindihan ng masa kung bakit naging "bakya" ang gusto nila. Hanggang duon lang kasi exposure nila. Ang supposed na nakakaintindi, siya ang umunawa.

Instead of being revolted, we should at least understand and feel blessed that we see the bigger picture. Let that understanding contribute to our personal growth as a better person and how we can contribute to society so that more people will be able to see things the way we see them. Go to Hongkong and Singapore, you see them everywhere, nagtitilian sa public place, dala dala ang maleta, tupperware na may pansit at kaldero at nilalatag sa banig in a public place. Kumakain sa public place, nagtitipid para lang may ipadala sa kanilang mga anak sa Pilipinas para may pambili sa SM. THAT IS THE REALITY OF IT ALL. And people of other nationalities are just puzzled why these people (Filipinos) are shrieking in a public place. That is why there was even a proposal by the HK and Singaporean government to set aside a public place where the maids can meet other than the places they are already converging.

Tell me about it, i am a first hand witness at nung una, i felt ashamed. Kakahiya how they were acting. But i realize, will i abhor and get angry at them for acting that way? Is it their fault that they act that way? Nah. It boils down to our poverty and economic situation now and how we were governed as a people, and how our masses were exploited. But with the way things are looking up now, i am very hopeful that our future will be much better for everybody. Let us just be united and help our country prosper.

Sy: SM no threat
to local business
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The president of SM Prime Holdings Inc., yesterday said the entry of Shoe Mart in Bacolod City should not be considered as a threat by local businesses in the city.

Hans Sy said SM will contribute to the economy of Bacolod rather than affect other businesses. He said that, based on their experiences, the business taxes of other establishments did not reduce but were maintained and they are only an add-on.

Sy said they believe they were able to contribute to the economy rather than affect other businesses. "I could say, rather than eating up the pie, we're making the pie bigger now," he said. They have already experienced this in other provinces like Pampanga, Baguio or even Davao, he added. Because of curiosity, people might want to come over to SM in the first two months, Sy said. The opening will also attract people from the neighboring provinces to come here, he said.

Sy said they are happy to have built a word-class mall in Bacolod City. He said they believe that people in the provinces like Bacolod also deserve the best kind of mall. He added, that he calls it the "Mall of Asia in Bacolod."

SM City Bacolod, the 28th supermall of SM Prime Holdings, opens its doors to the public today. The 60,000 square meter mall, is located on a 16-hectare property at the reclamation area.

During the blessing of the mall yesterday 103 out of its 119 stores opened. This includes fashion boutiques, shoe and home stores, and computer stores.

MALL ATTRACTIONS

SM City Bacolod also has local and international fast food chains, food retailers, and specialty restaurants, apart from the foodcourt.

Some of the mall's attraction are an al fresco dining area called the Fiesta Strip, an Event Centre and a theater that can be converted into a venue for concert, plays, product launches and conventions.

A 2 p.m. mass was officiated by Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra yesterday at the mall while the ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by SM founder Henry Sy, Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor Renecito Novero, Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas, Cebu Mayor Tomas Osmena, Simplicio Palanca and other top SM officials.

CELEBRITIES

Among the celebrities present at the soft opening were Charlene Gonzalez, Jose Marie Chan and Marc Nelson. Sy said that with the opening of SM City Bacolod, 3,500 people have been hired by direct employment aside from another 3,500 hired by their tenants which means a total of 7,000 jobs.

He said they are happy with the reception of the Bacoleños and the unquestionable support of the city government. "You could really feel that the city is doing all this for the people of Bacolod," he said.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he believes the opening of SM City Bacolod is an overwhelming event because it comes very rarely to Bacolod.

He said that in other places where SM came in, people from other towns come to the place because it is an attraction, but this will normalize after a while. In the long run, the market becomes bigger so the pie becomes bigger and everybody will also get a slice of that, he said.

INVESTORS' CONFIDENCE

Leonardia said he welcomes the entry of Shoe Mart and that he has seen how the people anticipated this. We can feel the excitement in the air so SM must be congratulated for this architectural achievement, he said. "But more than an architectural wonder, this place for me is a symbol of investors' confidence in Bacolod City," he added. Leonardia said that if Henry Sy can trust his money in Bacolod, then there must be something here. "This is a further validation of the title bestowed upon us by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry that Bacolod is the Most Business Friendly City in the Visayas," he said.

And if Bacolod grows, all the others will also grow," he said.

In terms of taxes, the entry of Shoe Mart eventually means resources for the government to be able to serve the rest of the population, Leonardia said.

CONVENTION CENTER

Meanwhile, Sy said they are considering putting up a convention center in the city. He said nothing is final yet but it is very much in their plan and they are studying it right now. The putting up of other businesses like townhouses may also be included in their plan, but not in the immediate future, because their focus right now is in the shopping center development, he said.

I hope that the new airport in Silay would open as soon as possible because Singcang Airport needs a rest.

Sy: SM no threat to local business

CONVENTION CENTER

Sy said they are considering putting up a convention center in the city. He said nothing is final yet but it is very much in their plan and they are studying it right now. The putting up of other businesses like townhouses may also be included in their plan, but not in the immediate future, because their focus right now is in the shopping center development.

^^ Convention Center and Townhouses. later on halos magkatabi nalang yong dalawang convention center the Pavillion and the SM. even not in the immediate future basta matuman lang ang ila mga plano.

SM City Bacolod is a mall of many new concepts:
a bridge way highlights the architectural character of the whole structure,
unifying the design of two buildings, and making it the first of its kind among,
SM malls. It welcomes customers with a six-sided grand facade with 10 SM signage all around.

The mall's interiors are equally compelling high ceilings and colorful murals
inspired by Bacolod's world-famous Maskara Festival and designed by popular director Fritz Infante.

yah, it looks pretty snazzy, the concept has sort of a combination of futuristic and oriental design, there will definitley be a couple of well known stores that will open in 888 like Bench, Penshoppe, jollibee, etc. but the majority of stores that will be opening here in 888 will be like AMAR emporium, BUDDIES variety, and other stores like these, so there will definitley be a whole lot of cheap stuff. Products that are made by unknown manufacturers sold at cheap prices, fake goods and etc. I nick name all of em "Fakeys" just for simplification purposes not meant to criticize the products. I love Fakeys, they may be substandard but i just enjoy the fact that with P6000 i can buy 4 or 5 Ahhoo DVD players, and buying RTW's with a lot of funny "ENGRISH"(<---not a type-o) written on it. I cant w8 for this place to open

The two-storey shopping center, which will be constructed on 5,000-square meter area with parking space, will house 165 stalls and a supermarket.
"More than 50 percent of the stalls will be 168-type. We'll have products from all walks of trade, including computer shops.

When i was inside the mall, i felt i was in an international airport abroad or in a newly opened mall in Manila. And it is heartening to realize that a lot of local talent has been used in the planning and construction of the mall.

Just imagine what we can accomplish if we set our sights for the city and province. I hope this spills over to bring progress to our province. A lot of developments the past year has made Bacolod a very good alternative business destination. I hope this momentum continues. The local government has displayed a "can-do" attitude inspite of all the challenges. Aside from call centers, i wish other BPOs will also come over like accounting, HR and IT.

^^ ^^ ^^ Chinese investors are investing in two more ethanol plants in our province targeted for construction this year and to begin operations in mid-2008, while plus the San Carlos City commissioned was on last December 2007 and is expected to begin producing about 33 million liters of ethanol a year by the start of January 2008. The ethanol plants in Murcia-Don Salvador Benedicto towns and Kabankalan City that are estimated to cost $30 to $35 million each. For a total sugar plantation of 17,000 hectares the plant in the Murcia area is expected to produce about 120,000 liters of ethanol a day, while the one in the Kabankalan City area is targeted to produce 150,000 liters of ethanol a day.

The Gokongwei group is reportedly putting up a P795-million ethanol plant at the Southern Negros Development Corporation (SONEDCO) in Kabankalan City. This is aside from the Gokongweis' two on-going projects at SONEDCO worth P2.543 billion. The projects include the installation of a new sugar refinery to be operational in October next year and the expansion of its existing refinery will be streaming in July 2007.

At present, the ethanol-blended E10 fuel is being sold by SeaOil in Bacolod. Good development. It's nice to hear this kind of report.

Cops to file raps vs. seven artists

The Bacolod police will file charges against seven Negrense artists who allegedly damaged their patrol cars when they attempted to prevent the arrest of one of their companions in an establishment at 22nd Street, Bacolod City Saturday.

Chief Insp. Armando Tubongbanua, Bacolod City Mobile Group head, said yesterday they will file charges for malicious mischief and disobedience to agent or person in authority against the group of local artist Nunelucio Alvarado.

Police reports said Frederick Maravalles, a younger brother of a local artist, who was under the influence of intoxicating liquor, reportedly took off his T-shirt and created alarm and scandal.

Alvarado, meanwhile, told the DAILY STAR in a phone interview that they settled the damages with the owner of People's Village bar and he is expecting the case between them and Tubongbanua to also be settled.

He said he and his companions wrote a letter of apology to the bar owner because of the incident. He said he assured Tubongbanua he will shoulder the expenses for the damage on the patrol car.

Tubongbanua said the Terrano Patrol 101 responded at the bar when a concerned citizen informed them that there was a commotion in the area. The police brought Maravalles to Police Station 2 for allegedly creating alarm and scandal, but, his companions formed a barricade and one of them even lay down on the ground to stop the police officers, he said.

He said the suspects were under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Police reports said Alvarado's son, Borug challenged PO2 Marijana of Police Station 2 to a fistfight.*DMG

Robinson’s Place is the first Robinson’s mall in Bacolod City outside Metro Manila. Although new malls are being built in the city, I guess most people still go to Robinson’s Place to shop, to meet friends and to relax. “Rob”, as locals popularly call the mall, is in the northern part of Bacolod and serves as a gateway for people from Silay City, Talisay City and other Negros city and town from the north. Robinson’s Place has a fair share of restaurants, fast food chains and coffee shops. Just at the main entrance, Calea greets mall goers with their own brand of cakes. At the other side of the main entrance was a doll house looking cubicle with kiddie-size Precious Moments character. Upon entrance, a large fountain sits at the center which sometimes doubles as a stage for events. Families and teenagers hang out at Robinson’s Place to watch movies or play at the entertainment center.

Since the opening of SM City Bacolod on March 2, thousands of people, young and old alike have swarmed and trooped. Huge crowds from all over the province continue to flock to the newly-opened SM City in Bacolod.
It was an open house, every establishment prepared delicious food for their customers, friends, and relatives. SM, on its part, prepared something for the guests in two venues, one at the supermarket at the South wing and another at the VIP Reserved area at the North Wing.
The grand opening of Bacolod's SM City, which has been dubbed the "Visayas Mall of Asia"was attended by officials, businessmen, socialites, civic leaders, members of the clergy and the movers and the shakers of the city. The magnificent modern building juts out of the Reclamation Area with the breathtaking view of the sea as a fitting backdrop.

--------------------
What will be of your expectations to the other malls here since the SM is newly open?
hindi naman siguro masyadong maaapektuhan ang ibang mall dito coz of fast growing
population of Bacolod and NegOc.

The Cebu-based Gaisano South Group of Companies along Singcang-Araneta Street is also provides Negrenses a new shopping experience. It is five hectares of shopping and surrounding parking areas. A box-type structure may look like a plain warehouse on the outside but once inside the mall, the public will have a hundred stores, food joints and specialty shops to visit.
This does not include the 5,000 square-meter supermarket and 15,000 sq. m.- Gaisano Department Store which carries the mall's tradition of affordable and quality goods and services.

Parking will also pose no problem to the shoppers, adding that the mall's basement and the parking area surrounding the whole complex can accommodate 700 vehicles. Restrooms are conveniently located at the basement, ground and second floors of the mall. The mall will also have four movie houses. The area will be the site of the mall's "night life." Coffee shops and bars will be located here and the parking area will provide the venue for special events such as concerts and variety shows.

Gaisanos have invested heavily on real estate in Bacolod since the 1980’s. "The company has been waiting for opportunities to build something big for Bacolod and Negros Occidental.

The Supermall will not pull out the market from Gaisano Department Store Main at downtown Bacolod. Rather, both establishments will complement each other in serving the needs of the expanding market. The supermall, Gaisano's 7th branch in Western Visayas. Negrenses from the southern part of the province will no longer go through the traffic of central Bacolod to do their shopping.

3 Bacolod councilors recognized as among top 20 in the country

Three Bacolod City Councilors were among the top 20 recognized as Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines at the national assembly of the Philippine Councilors League at the Cebu International Convention Center in Mandaue City Friday.

Of the 20, the top 10 who were given awards included Lyndon Caña of Bacolod City, three councilors from Quezon City and one councilor each from Benguet, Bulacan, Iloilo, Southern Leyte, Mandaluyong, and Cebu.

Councilors Ana Marie Palermo was number 11, and Jocelle Batapa-Sigue was also among the top 20.

Caña is the chairman of the Committees on Environment and Ecology, and Trade, Commerce and Industry of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City.

Of the 13,124 councilors all over the country, 85 were nominated and screened to narrow the list to 20.

Ten were then chosen by a panel of six judges chaired by Dr. Melwida Guevara, chairperson of the Galing Pook Award Foundation. Members were Senator Edgardo Angara; Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno; Archbishop Deogracias Iniguez, chairman of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines; Bulacan Gov. Josefina de la Cruz; and Naga City Mayor Jesse Robredo.

The office of Senator Angara also committed P100,000 worth of projects to be identified by the winners. full story (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/March/12/topstory4.htm)

NORTHERN NEGROS GEOTHERMAL PRODUCTION FIELD TO PROVIDE STABLE POWER SUPPLY IN NEGROS ISLAND

A 49 MW Northern Negros Geothermal Production Field (NNGPF) located in Bago City, Negros Occidental.

The US$68.4 million NNGPF is the fifth geothermal field developed and operated by PNOC-EDC and the first power plant constructed and fully-owned by PNOC-EDC. It is also the second for PNOC-EDC in Negros island the first being the Palinpinon or the Southern Negros Geothermal Power Plant (SNGPP) in Valencia, Negros Oriental. NNGPF is also the first renewable power project in the country to operate as a merchant plant under the new electricity environment.

Its interconnection with Cebu allows Negros Island to satisfy its net deficit of 25 MW. With the commissioning of the 49 MW NNGPF (with 40 MW dependable capacity) Negros Island would have a total dependable capacity of 220 MW. Taking into consideration the regulating reserve requirement of 13.2% of peak demand (or 27MW), Negros Island is therefore close to being self-sufficient in terms of power and all of it comes from renewable energy.

Meanwhile, the government will continue to showcase Negros Island as a role model for renewable energy development and utilization and for becoming the first energy self-sufficient island in the country.

Meanwhile, at least seven bioethanol projects with an estimated energy contribution of about 347,000 MWh are currently in the pipeline in Negros Occidental. The San Carlos-Bronzeoak ethanol plant located in San Carlos City is expected to come on stream by 2008. full story (http://www.doe.gov.ph/press/2007-02-02-northern%20negros.html)
