Bacolod-Silay airport better choice (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/July/10/topstory10.htm)

The Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry position was to transfer the present airport to Silay, its president Roberto Montelibano yesterday said.

He said there are proposals to delay the transfer of the airport because the road network leading to the one in Silay is not yet complete. However, he said they have not yet met on the issue of continuing the operation in Silay.

Montelibano said that, despite the delay, they believe the airport in Silay is a better choice and the business community is in favor of their position to relocate there. He said that, although they wanted the airport in Bacolod extended, it could not be done. Montelibano said another reason is the strong winds coming from the sea that affect the landing of planes.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia, meanwhile, said the airport in Bacolod is about 1,860 meters, while that in Silay is 2,000 meters, or a difference of about 140 meters and this could be verified.

"In terms of the length, I think it's practically the same. If I had my way, I would prefer it here (in Bacolod) or have two airports operational," he said.

Leonardia said reliable and competent sources have told him that the trend now is not closing airports, but opening new ones.

On the other hand, he said the city is not yet ready with its study on the existing Bacolod airport which he had earlier planned to present to the President on her visit to the province on Friday.

Meanwhile, Leonardia said he signed on Sunday documents for the purchase of two additional fogging machines for the city.

Editorial: Go Negosyo and E-jeeps

BACOLOD will have two important things to host this coming Friday. These are the Go Negosyo caravan and the signing of a memorandum of agreement between the City Government and Greenpeace International on E-jeeps (electronic jeepneys).
Both are expected to bring goodwill to the people of Bacolod and Negros Occidental, too. That’s why no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will witness the two significant events here.

Go Negosyo caravan, a project of Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) is aimed at drumming up the interest of Negrenses and Bacoleños in the field of entrepreneurship. E-jeeps, on the other hand, is meant to eliminate air pollution caused by smoke belching by vehicles using gasoline or diesel.
Analyzing both, Go Negosyo is really a big help to all Negrenses and Bacoleños who want to venture into entrepreneurship.

At least, they will be equipped of ample knowledge and guts to start any business so they make them self-reliant or a boss of their own business.

Here in Negros, there’s a lot of resources and there are a lot of people who have personal savings. However, some are afraid to venture and risk their savings in putting up any business.
But with Go Negosyo caravan, hope that more Negrenses and Bacoleños will be inclined to start their every business and be successful in the future.

Thanks to Mr. Jose Concepcion, Jr., presidential consultant on entrepreneurship, for having this Go Negosyo as brainchild aimed at helping everyone to be real businessman in the country.

Meanwhile, E-jeeps are also expected to help Negrense and Bacolood motorists especially those who are only renting (pasada) everyday to have a lower daily rental for their every unit.

Instead of renting for P600 to P800 daily plus expenses on gasoline, drivers now may have a little burden to carry with E-jeeps because the expenses they will be incurred is only on battery charging .
E-jeeps are also considered to be an environment-friendly vehicles that will make our Mother Earth more and more happy nowadays. So to all Negrenses and Bacoleños, welcome both with open arms and hope for a better tomorrow.

PAL photo exhibit opens at SM City Bacolod

A PHOTO exhibit showcasing the significant events in the history of Philippine Airlines officially opened Friday at the South Wing of SM City Bacolod.

The ribbon-cutting rite was jointly led by Bacolod City first lady Mrs. Elsa Leonardia and Mrs. Josefa Puentevella, the better half of Bacolod Lone District Rep. Monico Puentevella. Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia was the guest of honor of the event. Guests and visitors were warmly welcomed by PAL Bacolod Branch Manager Job Lamela and PAL Corporate Communication, Manila Manager Rene Soliman.

Dubbed “PAL at 66: Beyond a Proud Legacy”, this exhibit is part of PAL’s 66th anniversary celebrations this year. It was first staged in Manila last March and is now in Bacolod on the third and last leg of a provincial tour.
After PAL’s first flight on March 15, 1941 – from Neilsen Airport in then rural Makati to Baguio – the succeeding six and a half decades have seen the airline’s history intertwined with that of the Philippine nation.

These historical photos trace PAL’s proud legacy and rich heritage, beginning at the onset of the Second World War, through the Republic’s struggle for independence, through tumultuous events in the country’s recent history, to today’s fast-paced world.

The role of PAL in nation-building, including its service to Filipinos who do not even fly, is graphically presented in this exhibit.

As the country’s first flag carrier and Asia’s first airline, PAL has flown prominent personalities – two Popes, all Philippines presidents from Quirino to Arroyo, world leaders and statesmen, Hollywood celebrities, international beauty queens, champion athletes, and millions of ordinary Filipinos.

This photo exhibit, produced by the Corporate Communications Department, is humbly dedicated by Philippine Airlines to the Filipino People.

The exhibit will be available for public viewing at SM City Bacolod during regular mall hours until July 10, 2007.

^^ This is a very significant event in Bacolod being one of the choosen city for PAL's Photo Exhibition. This is very rare for PAL to hold an event like this. It's a must see. Please bring cameras and post it here:lol:

Go Negosyo sa Bacolod: The woman behind winning wares
The Philippine Star

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/images/news/newspics/07-09-2007/tumandok225.jpgTrendy, tasteful, tantalizing, transcendent and timeless.

Tumandok Crafts Industries, designer Josephine Locsin’s handicraft brand, epitomizes all of the above.

Tumandok, which traces its roots to Bacolod, is Locsin’s initial entrepreneurial adventure, a handicraft company aimed at manufacturing and distributing resin-based products.

Established in 1988, Tumandok began as a trading firm providing alternative employment to sugar workers during the height of the sugar industry crisis in Negros Occidental. It has since become a dynamic venture that promotes Filipino flair.

“Innovation with a Pinoy flavor is our key to making items which normally stay in a person’s imagination. With our products, we aim to leave our patrons with a superior and lasting impression,” said Locsin, once nominated by Ernst & Young as Entrepreneur of the Year.

Tumandok, which literally rose from the ashes after its factory was razed by a fire in 2003, continues to produce top quality light furniture, house wares, and decors from dried tobacco leaves, coco twigs, rice hulls, and other indigenous materials. The company is currently exporting its products to China, Middle East, USA and Europe.

WITH CABINET IN SILAY FRIDAY BY CARLA GOMEZ

Central Philippines governors are joining President Gloria Arroyo in a Cabinet cluster meeting on super region infrastructure projects at the new Bacolod-Silay Airport in Silay City Friday.

The governors of the Central Philippines will meet with the President after her site inspection of the new airport, Presidential Adviser for Western Visayas Rafael Coscolluela said yesterday.

Expected to be discussed are infrastructure priorities for tourism and development in the Visayan provinces of the central part of the country, he said. The congressmen and city mayors of Negros Occidental have also been invited to the Cabinet cluster meeting, he said.

Last year, Arroyo unveiled the mega-region economic development strategy that she said was geared toward propelling the Philippines to First World status.

For Central Philippines, which has the competitive edge in tourism with its natural wonders and the extraordinary hospitality of its people, the President said the priority is tourism investments.

While in Negros Friday, the President is also set to attend the Go Negosyo Caravan and the launching of electronic jeepneys in Bacolod City.*CPG

PAL selling its property in Bacolod airport

By Lenie Lectura
Reporter

PHILIPPINE Airlines is selling its real estate property in Bacolod, said the flag carrier’s president.

PAL and the national government jointly own the 40 hectares of property where the Bacolod airport is located. A new airport is being constructed in barangay Bagtic, Silay City. The government is confident that construction will be completed by October this year.

The new airport’s terminal lies on 6,187-sq-m area, with a parking space that could accommodate up to 350 cars.

PAL president Jaime Bautista said the airline would sell its share of the property. “We own 20 hectares there. Part of the runway is ours. The place where the terminal stands is also ours. We plan to sell it, since there will be a new airport in the area,” he said in an interview.

PAL, Bautista said earlier, is also in talks with Eton Properties Philippines Inc. for a possible joint-venture agreement to develop the PAL property on Legaspi Street, Legaspi Village, Makati City, into a residential condominium project.

Eton is the newly formed property firm of beer and tobacco tycoon Lucio Tan. PAL, meanwhile, is 99-percent owned by Tan.

“Our 1,700-hectare property in Makati is also up for sale. This will be finalized in two to three months,” said Bautista.

Eton Properties will embark in the development of residential condominiums, residential housing, office buildings, condotel, commercial centers, and leisure and retirement projects.

PAL also had plans to put up an aviation hub in Clark that would cost up to $50 million.

In its fiscal year ending March, PAL posted a net income of $140.3 million, its largest profit in its 66-year history.

Arroyo, Visayas guvs set to tackle super region infra

PGMA will visit at Silay city on this coming July 13 for the inspection of Bacolod-Silay airport together with the cabinet members.

a time for the national government that this property will be totally owned by the city government. then to make it a special economic zone or for the retention of the existing airport.

Featuring Bacolod Artist

‘In the hands of a wire artist’By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

http://www2.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/07/11/article_219911_07-11-2007.jpgWE USE to think that an artist’s hand is dexterous, refined and soft. I saw something different.

Not the hand of Ian Valladarez, a wire artist, who should have the strength to bend thick copper and ordinary wires. On the average, one “obra” requires three months to finish; three months of bending wires to the biddings of his heart.

“Perhaps, because of the help extended by Bro. Rolly Dizon and the Lopue’s family, the intensity of joy did not leave me,” Ian said.

“But I believe that it is more of my childhood memories, the sugar, fishing and ‘tumba patis’ that compelled me,” he had that language that is devoid of pretension when explaining what others might have called ‘inspiration.’

I asked for his mind, “Let me get into your mind, is all I ask of Ian.”

These are wires but curves spoke of feelings. It was happy alright but the thickness of the wires seems to speak of something deep hidden in Ian’s childhood.

Play and work was represented but the thought of devotion that others may see beauty in wires is totally beyond us.

It was unfortunate that Carlos Ruiz and Edsie Sazon were not around. But their ‘obra’ spoke of that same ardor that others may see intimacy and pain.

Carlos, Edsie and Ian, they are the young artists that will fill our minds and burn our feelings, in the morrow.

Ask GoNegosyo By Joey Concepcion
Thursday, July 12, 2007

Tomorrow GoNegosyo goes to Bacolod and the University of St. La Salle coliseum is expected to be full to the rafters of students, teachers, government employees and their families, and everyone who is or would want to become a negosyante. No less than Her Excellency President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will attend our event and this is her first time to visit the school after the young brothers of La Salle asked her to resign more than a year ago. But PGMA is always reconciliatory and forgiving. Brother Rolly Dizon who is co-chair for this big event was one of my teachers when I was in grade school and high school. He was a strict teacher and principal and I have a high regard for Brother Dizon. He has under his stewardship brought about some of the best entrepreneurs today in this country. I am sure Ateneo will not agree with this statement but if we look at the top IT companies such as Gerry Ablaza who is the CEO of Globe, Ricky Banaag of Intel, TJ Javier of Microsoft, Jojo Quintos of IBM, Dondi Mapa of Dell, Nilo Cruz formerly with HP, Ronnie Latinazo of EMC… all of them are La Sallites. Anyway, Brother Rolly has been a strong influence to many of us and it is his same passion to help make the minds of his fellow Negrenses towards optimism and entrepreneurship that made him an active co-chair of the GoNegosyo sa Bacolod.

We also have a number of entrepreneurs who really want to inspire and share their stories like Gaita Fores who comes from Bacolod, PCE Trustees Vivienne Tan, Governor Lray Villafuerte, Myla Villanueva and other GoNegosyo mentors such as Paolo Bediones, Dra. Vicky Belo, Johnlu Koa, Victor Tan, Les Reyes. Ray Gapuz and Joel Santos. GoNegosyo Cebuano awardees Jack Gaisano, Wilson Ng and Jay Aldeguer will also join us in Bacolod. We will also award the most inspiring Bacolod entrepreneurs: Ms. Josephine Locsin (Tumandok Crafts Industries), Ms. Dianna Lynn Agustin and Ms. Maria Corazon Bitong (BAYO), Mr. and Mrs. Yanson (Yanson Group of Companies, Ceres Liner Bus Co.), Mr. Jose Maria Cajili (Chicken House), Ms. Cecille del Castillo (Dungganon Bank, Negros Women for Tomorrow’s Foundation), Mr. James Chua (Foodman), Gov. Joseph Marañon (Mambukal Resort), Mr. Roberto Montelibano (GH Foods Inc.), Mr. Joaquin Torre (Riverside Medical Center), Mr. Benjamin Lopue Sr. (Lopue’s Group of Companies). We are also awarding the outstanding Bacolod support organizations, the Association of Negros Producers Inc. (Ms. Mary Ann Colmenares), IT Focus Team (Hon. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue), Negros Kabisig Livelihood Foundation Inc. (Dr. Carmen Benares) and the University of Saint La Salle Business Resource Center (Elsie Coscolluela). The Manila, Cebu and Bacolod awardees are all there to inspire. We also have the support of key government officials such as MSME Czar Secretary Cerge Remonde and Director Joey Pelaez of DepEd who is also our partner in Teen Negosyo this coming July 26-31 in Baguio City. We expect over 6,000 people to attend and we invite everyone to take advantage of the presence of over 25 entrepreneurs and mentors and be inspired, informed and empowered. We hope the people of Bacolod will take part of what is happening to our country, Phil. Inc. It is no longer a dream, it is now a reality.

Wow Brand Bayo is a Bacolodnon? It's well recognize for thier prices and quality.More and more Bacolod local Brand are getting much attention nationwide.I think Bacolod's Calea will be able to win hearts if they

friend, USLS is the host of the UniGames'07? correct me if im wrong, di ba USLS is a school founder of the UniGames? thanks

yeep, need ta gid flyover kay grabe pag gutok sang mga salakyan sa aton dalanon......any future highrise constrction in our city???

The reason I think why the flyover construction hasn't yet started is that, practically, IMO, Bacolod needs it the least. There are hardly any traffic in Lacson St. If Bacolodlodnons would say that there is such a congestion there at peak hours, try to compare it with other cities and you'll see what real traffic is. We need to thank to government for our wide roads. Lacson is a 4 lane street and that goes to 6 and 8 lanes when going north to Robinson's Place then to Talisay City.

we definitly need flyovers specially sa lacson sa may alisbo dampi kag sa may crossing sa riverside... kag sa araneta sa servandos dampi...

for me i don't want a flyover. it will only lead to a dirty look to the freshly and open air. i'd rather better to choose to widen or expand the roads. pero parang mahirap naman to expand the roads of Lacson-Burgos and the Lacson-BS Aquino...lols

Yes, I read sa Visayan Daily Star and sa The Spectrum (official media corps of USLS) that USLS will again host the University Games after DLSU-Dasmariñas gave up the hosting for this year because of revamps in their sports dept. The UniGames is the brainchild of Former USLS President Br. Rolando Dizon FSC, if I'm not mistaken. :)

Bacolod’s formidable four cited
Friday, July 13, 2007

Four organizations in Negros, with humble beginnings but enormous dreams, decided early on to focus on uplifting the lives of those far from the glitz and glamor of the corporate world. Their efforts have transformed the lives and welfare of countless fellow Negrenses.

The Association of Negros Producers Inc., Bacolod IT Focus Team, University of St. La Salle-Business Resource Center and the Negros Kabisig Livelihood Foundation will be recognized as four of the Most Inspiring Bacolod Entrepreneurs to be awarded by President Arroyo and Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III on July 13-14, 2007 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.

With 86 members and 32 partner organizations to date, The Association of Negros Producers Inc. started as a Manila-based organization of Negrenses who champion the cause of promoting the interests of small and medium scale businesses in their homw province, most notably during the 1985 sugar crisis. ANP has taken critical and seemingly hopeless situations and turned them into opportunities for the promotion of well-crafted and mostly indigenous products by local manufacturers.

ANP capitalized on the Pinoys’ penchant for pasalubongs by offering beautifully-designed products for visitors and transients to take home as souvenirs and gifts. Showcasing homegrown creativity and ingenuity, ANP offers a catalogue of stylish furniture and furnishings, the latest fashion items, a wide array of gifts including laminated native frames, jewelry boxes, decorative trays, bowls, dinner ware and the hand-painted décor, as well as delicious native delicacies.

Aside from arts and crafts, Bacolod also prides itself as a highly urbanized city outside Metro Manila, with the successful penetration of information and communications technology (ICT) in their business circuit. Through the vision of Atty. Jocelle Batapa-Sigue of the Bacolod IT Focus Team, the city embraced cyberservices as a sunshine industry that now provides employment for thousands and has brought in lucrative investments deals to the city.

The Bacolod IT Focus Team also implemented the Bacolod Information Technology (IT) Investment Program. Four major international call centers are currently in business in Bacolod, namely Teleperformance, TeleTech, Focus Communications and i-Solutions Outsource Asia (I/O Asia), or presently the Biz Talk Call Center. Special economic zones, IT parks and buildings and tourism development zones have also been established.

However, the Bacolod trail does not only lead to business development. More importantly, it also gives importance to the people’s livelihood and the improvement of its traditional sources of living.

The University of St. La Salle-Business Resource Center (BRC) was established in 1989 to assist economically-marginalized sectors of society, particularly micro-entrepreneurs and farmers. It seeks to improve the living conditions of the people and strengthen their spiritual core. With only six employees, BRC thrives on providing capital assistance for expansion or diversification of existing businesses, entrepreneurial development, community resource management, and non-formal education. It has also expanded coverage to include out-of-school youth.

The Negros Kabisig Livelihood Foundation (NKLF), on the other hand, seeks to increase the production yield of palay of farmer-members by 10-20 percent over their present yield. Since its establishment in 1990, they have provided efficient and effective credit facilities at lower interest rates and assisted agri-based communities in fund sourcing for livelihood projects. Their main services include rice production loans that have reached P95.1 million since 1991, integrated post-harvest facility, seed farm, etc. NKLF is one of 12 organizations recognized by the Benigno Aquino Foundation in 2003 as “People Power People” that serves as a source of hope for people development and love of country.

The Most Inspiring Bacolod Entrepreneur award is given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE) as part of the Go Negosyo sa Bacolod, part of PCE’s Go Negosyo Caravan which aims to bring Go Negosyo forums and expositions to key cities outside Metro Manila.

Go Negosyo sa Bacolod is supported by the Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Bacolod City Economic and Business Council with president Bobby Montelibano, and chairman Bro. Rolly Dizon. Also in cooperation with Globe, PAGCOR, San Miguel Corp., the Philippine Airlines, Hyundai, PLDT Smart, Splash Corp., Islands Souvenirs, SM Supermalls, DTI-OTOP and RFM Corp. and The Philippine STAR as event partners

RCBC to put up 13 more full-service business centersBy Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Friday, July 13, 2007
Rizal Commer-cial Banking Corp., (RCBC) the coun-try’s fourth largest capitalized private universal bank, is planning to build an additional 13 full service business centers in and outside Metro Manila in line with its long-term expansion.

Ismael Sandig, RCBC executive vice president for retail banking, said the bank opened six business centers over the past three months and is keen on putting up 13 more as part of efforts to better serve the banking public.

New business centers will soon rise in Balanga, Ba-taan, Zamboanga, Damosa Gateway in Davao, Ilagan, Isa-bela and the Cebu Business Park.

“The senior ma-nagement’s comm-itment is to put up at least 15 new busi-ness centers this year, including those that we have already opened. Add to that number our five extension offices, which we intend to convert into full service branches later this year,” said Sandig.

“We would like to show our custo-mers just how serious we are in wanting to reach out to them by giving them more access to the bank and its wide array of pro-ducts and services,”. he added.

The recently opened business centers are in Bacolod, Toledo, Cebu, Palawan and Angeles City, Pampanga.

So far, RCBC has put up 296 business centers, 180 of which are under the universal bank while the rest are with RCBC Savings Bank.

RCBC is also considering putting up 200 ATMs in the next three years to keep up with the competition in the industry.

The bank has a total of 215 ATMs while its savings bank has about 70 more.

“We just need to rationalize the deployment of our ATMs and we are now close to finalizing a definitive five -year plan for it. Our plan will clearly show where we want to go, and where we want to be.”

Sandig said ATMs play a crucial role in the bank’s bid to further expand its clientbase. “We want our ATMs to be a strong channel, which we can use as a vehicle in offering our various products and services,” he said.

RCBC now accounts for more than 10 percent of the remittance business. It has equity holdings in companies engaged in power generation, automotive assembly, thrift banking and food manufacturing.

DOE plans to establish ethanol highwayBy Donnabelle L. Gatdula
Friday, July 13, 2007
The Department of Energy (DOE) is on the planning stage for the estabishment of an ethanol highway in the country, a ranking DOE official said.

Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla said they are now coordinating with other government agencies to draw proposals from investors for the ethanol linkage.

Lotilla said among the areas being looked at as possible investment sites are in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Some of the specific areas being explored as potential ethanol corridors are San Carlos City, Negros Occidental-Tamlang Valley in Negros Oriental for Visayas and Zamboanga-Pagadian Road in Mindanao. These areas have also been identified as part of the country’s biofuels program.

Areas being considered to be part of the ethanol highways are those closest to the sources of ethanol feedstock such as sugar cane and jatropha.

President Arroyo has earlier directed energy officials to explore possible ethanol corridors to promote the use of alternative fuels.

The DOE said among the first two ethanol refineries would be put up by San Carlos Bioenergy in Negros Occidental and First Bukidnon in Mindanao.

The concept of the ethanol highway is similar to that of the Midwest Ethanol Corridor program of the US which covers routes I-55 in Illinois and I-70 in Missouri. These areas were established as a showcase for the availability of gasoline stations that offer E85 blend to flex-fuel vehicles.

E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline now offered in over 1,000 gas pumps in the US.

This concept was pioneered by major FFV manufacturer Ford Motor Co. in partnership with VeraSun Energy Corp., the second largest ethanol producer in the US.

The Philippine biofuels law mandates an initial five percent ethanol volume blend in gasoline products starting 2009. This ethanol blend level will then be increased to 10 percent after four years.

There are indications the government would eventually jack up the blend to 20 percent or higher. This is the level where incentives for investments are currently being studied by the DOE.

The DOE is also looking at relaxing the excise tax on vehicles run by alternative fuels.

Kabankalan gets GSIS kiosk

The Government Service Insurance System recently installed a Wireless Automated Processing System or G-W@PS kiosk in Kabankalan City, a press release from the mayor's office said.

The G-W@PS kiosk, located at the warehouse building of the new city hall in Brgy. Talubangi, can be used by GSIS members with upgraded eCard for their wireless, paperless transactions.

The project aims to eliminate dependence on documents which simply means doing away with documents as a requirement for GSIS transactions such as loan application forms, claims forms, copies of service records, and NSO certificates, the press release said.

This way, GSIS can also avoid the tedious process of printing and mailing bank checks for loans, pensions and other GSIS benefits, it added

Bacolod TelePerformance: Why always hiring? (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/07/13/oped/erwin.ambo.delilan.the.buzz.html)

SEEING and hearing the advertisement of Teleperformance, one of the call centers in Bacolod right now, there’s no doubt that almost all jobless people will take interest in applying as call center agents. Much more with the following offers that Teleperformance will give to those who will qualify and pass the screening, interviews, among other requirements.

These include higher compensation rates, P1,500 monthly attendance bonus, sign-on bonus, tenure bonus, additional 20 percent night differential pay and much more.

Wow, super yummy and if you’re a college graduate who knows how to speak English well, of course, you might take the challenge in applying at Teleperformance. But why despite of all these privileges and good package of compensation, still Teleperformance never stops hiring and hiring and hiring and hiring. Why? What’s the problem?

Last night, I was able to talk to one of the former call agent of Teleperformance and she revealed to me the real score of her job and the company’s policies and performance.

However, whatever are the policies of Teleperformance, I have no more right to argue on it.

What bothered me was the revelation of my friend who said at Teleperformance, the most you can stay there is only two to three months. If this is true, then, I can say that working at Teleperformance is like having a “dead end” job. I know that for quality’s sake, Teleperformance is keen on the performance of their call agents.

However, Bacolod is not the United States wherein Americans have the best accents in terms of English speaking.

If you can recall, there’s a study revealing Filipinos’ handicap in writing and speaking English. But since Teleperformance is here now, we, Negrenses and Bacoleños have no choice but to strive hard to become English conversationalists in order to fit in with the job.

Sad to say, a lot of local agents of Teleperformance failed to stay long in the company and instead some of the present force it has now are mostly “imported” ones like those from Iloilo, Cebu, Manila, Davao, among others.

And if this is the case, then Teleperformance is only here doing business and earning millions in Bacolod but not totally helping jobless Negrenses and Bacoleños.

So sad but this is it, said my friend.

To sum up, Bacolod is only earning taxes from Teleperformance but as to human resource development, that’s the question if what is Teleperformance’s commitment to the City Government of Bacolod.

GoNegosyo Bacolod Caravan
July 13, 2007 - St. La Salle Coliseum

Grabe, the whole university was jampacked because: a) the participants of the 4th PRISSAAP Regional Youth Congress were there (students from Negros and Pana; the congress started last July 11), b) college and high school students of Bacolod were also there c) the military (together with their bomb sniffing dogs) were there) d) of course, La Salle students were there, and e) there was a rally outside LOL

The Caravan started at around 9:45 AM and I've heard that is was indeed Jolina Magdangal who sang the Phil. National Anthem. The funny thing was, she mumbled near at the end of the song and paused for a few seconds before continuing. Maybe she forgot the Anthem? Anyway, PGMA arrived at around 11:45 am, and went inside the Coliseum quickly, as usual, security was tight. Other famous persons were there also, like, Cito Beltran, Dra. Vicki Belo, Paolo Bediones, etc.

And of course, kiosks were outside. Even GreenPeace was there, and their E-Jeepney!

http://img489.imageshack.us/img489/9564/image23lu0.jpg
Yes, folks, the E-jeepney has been officially launched in Metro Bacolod! Expect to see more of them next week.

Here is a photo of the PGMA envoy escorting here inside the Coliseum Loge. She was wearing a bluish green dress, if I remember correctly, she's there by the way, although she can't be seen in the photo since security was really tight.

UNO-R Bacolod information management system eases student access to records
THE Academic Information Management System (Aims) has enhanced the enrollment system and academic record keeping of the University of Negros Occidental Recoletos in Bacolod City.

Aims, software of Pinnacle Asia, were acquired by the school for easy access of students to the school and school academic records. It has systematized and consolidated the inputs of the college registrar with the accounting office. Bro. Jaazeal D. Jakosalem, OAR, University Property Administrator said that Aims has made records of both offices analogous with each other. We were able to solve the loopholes in the past where millions of pesos cannot be counted because their inputs cannot be recorded, Jakosalem explained.

Central Philippines’ developments to dominate Glo visit in NegrosBy Ma. Ester L. Espina

ALL eyes will be in Negros Occidental on Friday as the province plays host to the possible realization of making Visayas a force to tout for in the country’s direction on business and development.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will chair the three-hour Infrastructure Development Conference for Central Philippines which will be attended by seven Cabinet members, 27 governors, 33 mayors and seven congressmen from all over the Visayas at the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of International Standards at Silay City.

Presidential Management Staff (PMS) chief Cerge Remonde will brief the conference participants on infrastructure projects that will link the major Visayan islands while Transportation and Communication Secretary Leandro Mendoza will discuss major issues concerning airports and nautical highways.

Visayas has gotten a big boost recently with the opening of new airports in Iloilo, Negros and Eastern Visayas.

Local government officials believe this will improve their chances of getting investments which are usually congregated in the Metro Manila area.

Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane will also update the officials on various roads and bridges proposals to link the islands.

One such major program being mulled is the bridge to link Iloilo, Negros, and Cebu.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano will also discuss capacity expansion of tourism areas in the regions including private sector investment plans for Central Philippines which will be presented by four representatives of hotels, resorts and restaurants groups in the Visayas.

Arroyo is expected to arrive in Bacolod about 10 a.m. and will proceed immediately to the University of St. La Salle to check the environmental-friendly E-Jeep of Greenpeace and awarding of Go Negosyo Bacolod winners.

She will then proceed to Silay at lunch to inspect the new airport, luncheon with the officials before the conference.

Arroyo departs Negros at about 3 p.m.

City SP creates committee for special economic zoneBY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resolution creating an Ad Hoc Committee that will prepare for the establishment of a special economic zone in Bacolod City was unanimously passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

The Ad Hoc Committee will be composed of the chairmen of the SP Committees on Communication and Energy, Transportation, Trade and Commerce, Finance and Appropriation, and Ways and Means. Bacolod Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue yesterday said its creation will send a strong signal to the President that the SP is for the establishment of a SEZ in Bacolod based on the full support of the Philippine Economic Zone Authority of the idea.

PEZA offered its full support to the efforts of the SP to make Bacolod a more profitable site for investments by converting the existing Bacolod Airport into a SEZ, in a letter to the SP dated June 12, 2007.
Batapa-Sigue said they have not yet arrived at a consensus on the area for the SEZ because of the ownership issue of the Bacolod airport, which is partly owned by the national government and the Philippine Airlines.

Meanwhile, Batapa-Sigue recalled that in 2005, they had passed an ordinance laying down the procedures for the endorsement by the SP of IT parks and buildings, special economic zones and tourism development zones in Bacolod.

She said that as early as 2005, the SP has clearly identified as one of its policy target the encouragement of the establishment of economic zones through the passage of an ordinance.

That ordinance paved the way for the proclamation of the Office of the president of two IT parks and two IT buildings in Bacolod, she said. These are the Robinson's Place-Bacolod in 2005, the East Block in 2006 and the Bacolod IT Park and the Monfort IT Center this year.*CGS

GMA tells youth: Be entrepreneursBy Antonieta Lopez
Saturday, July 14, 2007

BACOLOD CITY – Inspired by the warm reception she received at the Go Negosyo Caravan at the University of St. La Salle here, President Arroyo broke her one-speech-per-day rule and addressed an audience of more than 5,000 entrepreneurs and students from Negros Occidental.

The President interrupted host and entrepreneurship advocate Paolo Bediones and spoke in fluent Ilonggo, a gesture that earned applause from the audience.

She congratulated the awardees whom she described as “icons and role models” of entrepreneurship and encouraged the youth to be entrepreneurs, saying that this sector will be the “next generation of successful entrepreneurs.”

Jose Concepcion III, presidential consultant for entrepreneurship, said the President aims to transform three million Filipinos into entrepreneurs before her term ends in 2010.

What the country needs is a mindset change and politics should be set aside to make way for an economic revolution, Concepcion stressed.

He added that the positive performance of the Philippine Stock Exchange and the foreign exchange market is no longer a dream but a reality. “We have to participate and not remain as watchers,” he added.

La Salle Brother Rolando Dizon, chairman of the Bacolod City Economic and Business Council, also stressed the need to inspire the youth who should begin to “think and act as bold entrepreneurs.”

Bacolod is the second leg of the Go Negosyo Caravan after a successful launch in Cebu City. A project of the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship, the caravan seeks to bring entrepreneurial forums and exhibitions to key cities outside Metro Manila.

Concepcion said that the conference is focused on giving the people of Bacolod hope despite the economic woes the country is currently experiencing and to provide Filipinos the opportunity to develop a positive mindset.

The caravan was highlighted by the awarding of Bacolod’s most inspiring entrepreneurs by Mrs. Arroyo, who was assisted by Secretary Cerge Remonde, Dizon, and Concepcion.

The awardees are Gov. Joseph Marañon for his tourism development efforts in Mambukal Resort, Roberto Montelibano for GH Foods Inc., Joaquin Torre for Riverside Medical Center, Dianna Lynn Agustin and Maria Corazon Bitong for Bayo, Jose Maria Cajili for Chicken House, Cecille del Castillo for Dungganon Bank and Negros Women for Tomorrow Foundation, James Chua of Foodman, Josephine Locsin of Tumandok Crafts Industries, Benjamin Lopue Jr. of the Lopue’s Group of Companies and Olivia Yanson of the Yanson Group of Companies.

Awards were also given to the Most Inspiring Bacolod Business Support Organizations, namely, the Association of Negros Producers, Bacolod IT Focus Team, Negros Kabisig Livelihood Foundation Inc. and the University of St. La Salle Business Resource Center.

The Go Negosyo Caravan was also participated in by advocates Dr. Vicki Belo, Vivienne Tan, Jay Aldeguer, Myla Villanueva, Gaita Fores and Camarines Sur Gov. LRay Villafuerte, who shared their insights during the forum.

PRESS RELEASE
Public Information Office-City Mayor's Office

249 CITY SCHOLARS RECEIVED COS

A total of 249 scholars of the city government of Bacolod received their Certificate of Scholarship through the Public Employment Services Office, recently at the BAYS Center . PESO is the implementing arm of the scholarship program of Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia.

Twenty-five students are under the Academic Scholarship while 220 belong to Scholarship for the Poor. P20,000 is granted to academic scholars who are entitled to enroll in universities or colleges. Scholarship for the poor, on the other hand, offers free tuition and miscellaneous fees in state or city colleges.

City Ordinance # 386 Series of 2005 assures that tuition fee of all the scholars will be paid by the city until they graduate. Sec. 3 of the C.O. stated that summer classes will also be covered. Scholars will receive P3,500 allowance per semester. Last Year, the city has 198 scholars. Four teachers availed of the Advancement Program.

Mayor Leonardia addressed the scholars who came with their parents, you must make good of this opportunity because when you succeed, your family will succeed and Bacolod city will also succeed.

Shella Mae Duran, a 2nd-year nursing student at the University of St. La Salle , said that her parents discouraged her to pursue the course because it is expensive. Durans mother is a teacher and father is a retired soldier.

But I love nursing, so I looked for a scholarship to pursue it, she added. Shella Mae topped the qualifying exams given by PESO through La Consolacion College-Bacolod last May.

Councilor Greg G. Gasataya, Committee Chair on Education said that there is an allocated budget for the said program.

Letecia Alumbro a mother of 4 of Prk. Seawall, Brgy. Sum-ag, was very grateful to Mayor Leonardia. She and her husband were sisi vendors. She said her daughter was given the chance to pursue Accountancy in Carlos Hilado Memorial State College because of the C.O.

Executive Assistant and PESO OIC Moises dela Cruz said that all scholars were screened and found deserving in all categories. Whoever violates the rules and regulations set by the respective schools and the program, the Committee will drop him or her from the roll, and give others a chance, he added.

Yap shut out In PBA awards

With Purefoods failing to make giant strides this year, Negrense James Yap also lost his PBA Most Valuable Player citations.

The 6-foot-3 guard from Escalante City, whose impressive sophomore season in 2005-2006 ended with an MVP award, made the shortlist this year but was not included in the Top 3 that had eventual winner Willie Miller of Alaska, Gary David of Air21 and Mac Cardona of Talk N' Text.

Yap, whose team finished with a 6-12 record in the recent Fiesta Cup, was also nominated for the sportsmanship award during the Leo Awards Night at the Araneta Coliseum last night and finished third in the voting.

David, also the Most Improved Player and a member of the All-Defensive Team, won the sportsmanship award. It was the second such award for Miller, who also won

in his sophomore season in 2002 while the league's more renowned players were with the national team for the Busan Asian Games.

He became the first guard to win a second MVP trophy while joining the elite ranks of Ramon Fernandez, Alvin Patrimonio, Bogs Adornado, Abet Guidaben, Benjie Paras and Danny Ildefonso to winning at least two.

Miller, who celebrated his birthday yesterday, totaled 2,671 votes after garnering the most from representatives of the media, statistics, television coveror ABC-5, players and the PBA.

Cardona, voted in as the TNT-PBA Fiesta Cup's Best

Player of the Conference, was a far second with a 1,283 total and David 1,019.

Yap was also unable to break into the mythical team, led by Miller, who was joined in the first team by David, Sta. Lucia Realty's

Kelly Williams, TNT's Jay Washington and San Miguel Beer's Dorian Pena.

Cardona was relegated to the second Mythical Team along with Air21's Wynne Arboleda and Arwind Santos, SMB's Ildefonso and TNT's Yancy de Ocampo.

Williams handily won over Santos and SMB's LA Tenorio for Rookie of the Year honors, becoming only the second Realtor to be so honored after Zandro Limpot in 1993. Ronald Tubid of Ginebra was named Mr. Energy.*CPT

Says Central Philippines beacon for tourism (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/July/14/topstory5.htm)

SILAY CITY - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo yesterday outlined the gains of her administration in interlinking Central Philippines through airports and nautical highways to provide it with a competitive edge as a world class tourism destination.

"Together we shall make Central Philippines a beacon for business and tourism. Let's push on with greater solidarity and focus," she said. The president, who spoke at an Infrastructure and Investment Conference on the Central Philippines Super Region at the New Bacolod-Silay Airport here, attended by members of her Cabinet and Central Philippines officials, also said "We must invest in vital infrastructure that is the backbone of a modern nation."

She cited billions of pesos spent on ports, roads, roll-on-roll-off facilities, energy reliability and airport projects that will spur travel and tourism from Iloilo to the islands of Negros, Cebu, Camiguin- Mindanao, Palawan, Bohol and Bicol. In her last State of the Nation Address, Arroyo said she unveiled the theme of the super regions to bring the concentration of growth out of Metro Manila.

"It was not just a state of the nation gimmick, it is a concept that will be carried all the way to 2010," she said. The President said that 55 percent of the tourists who visit the country go to Central Philippines, with Boracay as a top overall destination and Cebu as a top destination for foreign tourists, and that is how we will plan the rest of Central Philippines, she added.

Negrense cagers doing good in Manila
By Henry C. Villalva

A couple of Negros-bred cagers are currently quietly starting out in the collegiate leagues in Manila particularly in the UAAP and the NCAA and this is good news for Negros basketball. We notice that it took quite long before a new batch of Negrense cagers started to break ground in these collegiate leagues once again. Coming as it does after that era when the likes of Noli Locsin, Boyet Fernandez, Mike Mustre and company thrived in the amateur leagues before hitting it big in the PBA, this development indeed looks good for Negros basketball.

His former Negrense varsity campaigners now in Manila?

Well, first and foremost of course is the very promising Siverino 'Nonoy' Baclao, the former West Negros College Mustangs who is now playing in the ongoing UAAP basketball wars for the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles after having completed a year of residency last year.

His former WNC teammates Sanny Abaring and Junblargs Alisbo are now donning the Far Eastern University Tamaraw colors also in the UAAP while two other former Bacolod high school standouts - former WNC Baby
Mustang Roel Hugnatan and ex-St. John's Institute varsitarian Leo Canuday - are starters with the Adamson University Falcons.

Over at the NCAA, little is known of former University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Ram Nathaniel Salanga, son of broadcaster Fred Salanga, who is also playing now in his first season with the University of Perpetual Help Altas. This kid has, I heard, already grown tall and big (he was already about 6'4" when coach Pol Morales released him after knowing that he was being tapped for Perpetual).

Salanga is a product of the defunct Bacolod inter-church basketball league composed of teams from the different evangelical Christian churches in the city, a tournament initiated by the late Joshua Vidal.

We bumped into Nathaniel during one practice game and he immediately caught our attention with his tall frame and long arms. We learned them that he was barely starting to learn the game and after knowing that he was out of school we encouraged the kid to enroll in college and that was when we got to talk to his father, our colleague and friend Fred.

We know there are still others playing in the other so-called minor college leagues in Manila like the NCRAA etc. The point is this is an indicator of how much Negros basketball has done as far as development is concerned and how much we have contributed to the overall baskteball scenario in the country and we congratulate these cagers who are curently trying to make a name for themselves in the varsity circles in Manila.

By the way, we were also told that ex-UNOR Ram Edu Mustre is now undergoing training with the Jose Rizal University (JRU) Heavy Bombers in the NCAA.

JG Summit to build power plant in Negros

Gokongwei-led JG Summit Holdings announced it will construct a multi-million energy generating plant in Negros to fuel the sugar and mill refinery of its sister firm Universal Robina Corp. (URC).

JG Summit will put in P140 million for the construction of a 12-megawatt generating facility that will have an estimated yearly off-take of over 48 million kilowatt per hour.

The Bagasse Fired Power Generating Plant, located in Kabankalan Negros Occidental, will be 98.65 percent Filipino owned while the remaining 1.35 percent will be foreign owned.

JG Summit disclosed it will eventually be creating a subsidiary company to run the 12 MW generating facility.

The project, which will be operational by October next year, will be located within the URC compound in Kabankalan Negros Occidental. The plant will create 25 new jobs.

The power generated will be used by URC sugar mill and refinery. By the start of the plant’s commercial operations, it will be URC’s primary power provider independent from URC’s manufacturing operations.

Meanwhile, the publicly listed company said any excess power to be generated will be offered to the grid or local electric distributors. JG Summit said this could potentially be the nearest local cooperative, which is Negros Occidental Electric Cooperative (NONECO).

The power generation project has qualified to receive fiscal and non fiscal incentives from the Board of Investments (BOI), the investment monitoring arm of the Department of Trade and Industry.

It was registered as a new operator and classified under the energy- power generation of the Investment Priority Plan (IPP) of the government.

The project will be using indigenous and renewable energy source specifically the bagasse fired power generation.

The project is in support of the government’s program to encourage private sector participation and promote utilization of indigenous and renewable energy sources in power generation to reduce dependence on imported fuel as endorsed by the Department of Energy (DOE).

Capitol, PNB ink MOA for property use (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/07/17/bus/capitol.pnb.ink.moa.for.property.use.html)

NEGROS Occidental Governor Joseph Marañon and the Philippine National Bank (PNB) Senior Vice President Rafael Sison jointly signed contract of lease Monday in the presence of Vice Governor Isidro Zayco and the Provincial Board members.

Said contract stated that PNB agrees to return a portion of the leased property it presently occupies along Lacson Street to the Province. The Province in return authorizes PNB to sub-lease the unoccupied second to seventh floor of the PNB building. The contract further stipulate that a total portion of 4,050 square meters leased premises of PNB will be returned to the Province for its use.

The signing of the contract is in line with Marañon’s State of the Province Address (Sopa) delivered last July 2, 2007. As earlier reported and as spoken by Marañon in his SOPA, he then renegotiating with PNB to re-convey 4,000 square meters of the 1960 leased property back to the Province for the intended development of a commercial center.

Marañon stressed that just as in any contract like this, PNB will have the first priority in leasing the 4,000 square- meter it returned to the Province under a new contract this time. Meanwhile, as a “win-win solution”, the contract further stipulated that the Province authorized PNB to renovate and sub-lease the second to the 11th floors of its building and that the province will share up to 10 percent of the lease income for the next 99 years.

Bacolod finds new hopeBy Marlaw A. Espaqola

FOR over seventy years of political and economic devastation, Bacolod City still remains itself as the City of Smile. The City has clipped behind all the adversities of time and moving ahead with great political, economic and financial improvements. Thus, a wider dome of physical growth and a wide-range of financial opportunities have been landscaped in a short time effort.

After a long years of drought in financial opportunities, and the cellar explosion of sugar industry in the province in early 80’s, which is consider to be the main stream of its income, Bacolod found new hope today.

One of the success that the City of Smile enjoys today was the outbreak of many call center companies that leads the city to be the niche of ICT in the region.

It is after the implementation of Information Technology Investment program by the City Government through the Bacolod City Information Technology (IT) Focused team established in completion of Executive Order No. 8, series of 2005 signed by Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia on May 27, 2005. Under EO No. 8 S. 2005. The said team was chaired by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue who, at the same time chaired the Committee on Communications and Energy of the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod. Call centers operating in the City right now are; TeleTech in Araneta, Singcang Airport, Teleperformance in Magsaysay, AO/Asia in Lopuest East , and Focus along Lacson street.

Nevertheless, the same efforts were appended by the entire Provincial office of Agriculture and so in the City of Smile. Such, has been prolific in promoting the Island as the “Organic Bowl of the Country”.

Also, the entry of newly inaugurated SM Mall on March 02 provides the entire district an enormous job opportunities and excitement in the lives of many mall goers and for every individual to experience the thrills of living in modern life.

Moreover, the instantaneous constructions of many infrastructures, public facilities and transportations attract many local and foreign investors. Like the entry of Mister Donut this year, Mang Icountless commercial stores owned by Indian, Chinese and Korean investors, the opening of International Seaport at reclamation in 1999, the still constructing Sanpark bulding along Mandalagan and Bacolod version of China nasal in 2005, Town beside Land Bank in Gatuslao street, the anticipated coming of Convergies, the soon to be inaugurated International Airport in Silay.

Also, the proposed economic zone as replacement of the old Bacolod Airport in Singcang will fuel up the city to further distance of progress. Moreover, the proposed friendship bridge between Negros and Iloilo will link the flow of economic wealth from each province. The nonstop and boundless business exchange of the two provinces will stabilize the any shortages of the two.

The renovations of many tourist spots in the city and in the province encourage every adventurer and tourist to travel in the Island. This will bring monetary injections and promotions to other places.

Every endeavor faced by the City now, at last, provides variety of opportunities to impact the desired progress for the city.

It is not only because of the efforts inserted by the City Government and Provincial Government alike but through the determination of every Bacolodonon to stand strong amidst poverty, political instability and social crisis our nation have been always.

The new government center brings new hope for all of us. However, it is not worth obtaining for if we let our leaders’ deicide and perform, it is in harmony of our cooperation as a citizen to this town.

Bago rice farmers now use internet to get farming info

A group of farmers in Brgy. Dulao, Bago City are going high-tech, now accessing up-to-date farming information from multi-media sources, including the Internet.

The cyber community of Lopue's Farmers and Laborers Association, a first in Western Visayas, is one of the projects of the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture, popularly known as the Pinoy Farmers' Internet, under the Philippine Rice Research Institute.

Roger Barroga, project manager of OPAPA, said LOFALAS received two sets of computer with accessories and compact discs containing the Knowledge Bank and the Rice Production Guide after 19 of their members and their children attended a two-day Basic Information and Communications Technology Training.

The oldest participant is Amelita Arimas, 60, who said she enjoyed the training despite suffering from already stiff fingers and poor eyesight.

Provincial Agriculturist Igmedio Tabianan said that by giving farmers access to the multi-media technologies, they can strengthen their position, not only as farmers but also as researchers. "With ICT, we can fast-track development, not only in Bago but also in other cities and municipalities in the future. We don't only cater to food security but also to the development of the human potential," he said.

Ed Libetario, officer-in-charge of PhilRice-Negros, said that if farming life with ICT becomes successful in Brgy. Dulao,

then it must be a precursor to a better future.

Dulao was chosen as the pilot site for a cyber community in Bago City, dubbed the rice bowl of Negros Occidental, because of the strong partnership between its farmers, PhilRice, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist, Bago City Government, Alter Trade Foundation, and the National Irrigation Administration. LOFALAS chairman Sergio Quivis said the project will greatly benefit not only the farmers of Brgy. Dulao, but also those from the neighboring barangays of Abuanan, Atipuluan and Tabunan.*NLG

Sue-rate Halipa, project coordinator and Eduard Cruz, official cameraman, were commissioned by the World Bank in connection with the City Development Strategies Documentation Project to be shown at the World Bank Headquarters in New York City before the end of the year.

They were welcomed by Councilor Raul Rivera, city engineer Rogelio Diaz and Jessie Tanmoya, acting city planning development coordinator.

Kabankalan is one of the 23 cities among the 62 CDS member cities in the county to be included in this documentation project. Other component cities in Central Visayas included are Sagay in Negros Occidental, Bayawan in Oriental Negros and Iloilo City in Panay, the press release said.

Improvements pushed on solid waste mgn't

The Bacolod City Sanggunian passed an omnibus resolution recently pushing for the installation of a public address system in all garbage trucks, posting of signages, establishment of a complaint hotline, and providing safety gear and equipment for garbage collectors.

Councilor Greg Gasataya, chairman of the committee on environment and ecology, who authored the resolution, said in a press release from his office that it is obligatory for the city to promote and devise new ways to maintain cleanliness, and develop the spirit of involvement among the public.

The city is in the "Hall of Fame" for the Clean and Green Awards.

Gasataya said the installation of a public address system intends to notify the public of the arrival of garbage trucks, so they will be able to voluntarily take their garbage out for collection, the press release said. The putting of signages which bear the schedules of garbage collection in the strategic locations within the city will continue.

A public hotline to be managed by the Department of Public Services is also being pushed to cater to garbage-related concerns. This will give the public access into information about garbage collections and disposal, the press release said.

Safety gear and equipment will also be requested from the Office of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, for the safety of garbage collectors, the press release added.*

Negros athletic aces brace for Asian meet

Four of Negros Occidental's athletic standouts in the Philippine Team are bracing for the Asian Athletics Championships scheduled late this month in Irbid, Jordan.

Philippine record holders Sheena Atilano of La Carlota City and Arniel Ferrera of Cauayan will be at the forefront of the Philippine bid in the July 25-29 competition. Joining them are long jump specialist Joebert Delicano of Victorias City and female hammer thrower Loralie Amahit of Binalbagan.

Ferrera said he is looking at the meet as a gauge of his progress in training for the 24th Southeast Asian Games in Ratchasima, Thailand, where he will defend his hammer throw crown.

The Cauayan native, who holds the rank of Airman First Class, is hoping to redeem himself after a dismal performance in the Hong Kong Inter-City Meet, where his 55.88-meter effort was way off his personal best and SEA Games record of 60.47-m.

"I really want to improve on my performance because the SEA Games is just a few months away," he told the DAILY STAR last night.

Ferrera is seeking his third straight gold medal in Thailand but his training has been stalled for a few weeks last month because of the "Back-to-Basics Training", a requirement for his re-enlistment in the Air Force.

"I am more focused now and I need three months of rigid training to reach the form that I want," he added.

Ferrera said that the Philippine Sports Commission will allot members of the athletics team three international competitions, prior to the Thailand SEA Games.

Another meet calendared before the SEA Games is the Thailand Athletics Open, Ferrera said.

Gold medalists during the 2005 SEA Games were prioritized for the Jordan competition but Atilano made the roster due to her noteworthy improvement in 100-m hurdles the past few months.

The 27-year-old Atilano, who earned her Management Information Systems degree from the University of St. La Salle, obliterated Elma Muros' mark with her 13.65-second clocking in the Pune leg of the Asian Athletics Grand Prix.*CPT

Call center expanding in Bacolod (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/07/18/bus/call.center.expanding.in.city.html)

TELEPERFORMANCE, the world’s co-leading provider of outsourced CRM and contact center services, announced its plan to expand its Bacolod site to accommodate additional accounts.

Dave Rizzo, managing director of Teleperformance Philippines said that the company is looking at expanding 200 more seats bringing the number of call center seats close to 800 soon. Once all 800 seats are filled in, that would mean a total of 1,300+ jobs for Bacolod and Negros Occidental.

Currently, Teleperformance is in the process of recruiting call center agents to fill-in the target 600 seats for its technical support and customer service account. Except for Bacolod, Teleperformance is also experiencing remarkable growth in its Ortigas site in Manila.

According to Rizzo in Ortigas alone, the company is in need of more than 1, 000 employees just for one program and will expand by over 1,500 before the end of the year. He added that almost a dozen of new accounts are in the pipeline that the company needs to recruit for and that would mean more agents, quality analysts, reports people, mission control analysts, trainers, supervisors, ACCMs, CCMs, HR personnel, Events people, and Account Managers.

Three teams arrive for nat'l volley event
BY CEDELF TUPAS

Teams from Manila, Cebu and Iloilo arrive in Bacolod City today for the national finals of the Shakey's Girls' Invitational Volleyball League that starts Thursday at the University of St. La Salle College Covered Court.

Scheduled to plane in this morning are Manila champion Hope Christian School and Cebu representative University of Southern Philippines-Foundation. Iloilo will be bannered by Central Philippine University. USLS-Integrated School will carry Negros Occidental's hopes for another national volleyball crown.

Roger Banzuela, former president of the Philippine Volleyball Federation, yesterday said that local organizers have already installed taraflex, a synthetic floor that allows good grip and reduce the stress on the players' joints from impact with the floor, at the venue.

Banzuela, who has seen all four finalists play in their respective local eliminations, singled out HCS as the team to beat in the third edition of the tournament, won last year by University of the East.

HCS smashed University of Sto. Tomas to rule the Manila elimination.

Banzuela, also the USLS sports director, said the host team stands a chance to take the crown away from the Big City if they play well consistently.

La Salle blew its twice-to-beat advantage but managed to pull off a four-set victory over Doña Hortensia Salas Benedicto National High School in the Negros finals Sunday.

"They're very excited because the level of the competition is high," La Salle coach Malot Lozada said yesterday.

The tournament will adapt a single-round robin format with the top two teams colliding for the title Saturday morning, Banzuela said , adding that at least two teams will have a two-game schedule everyday.

The La Salle team is composed of Dancel Jan Dusaran, Gianes Dolar, Kate Zaldarriaga, Fritz Joy Gallenero, Vaniessa Aboy, Bea Tan, Merryl Ledesma (not Soriano as earlier reported), Jane Borero, Janelle Cawaling, Yricka Navarro and Kristine Caro.*CPT

City focuses on IT growth (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/July/19/businessnews2.htm)

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia met with the IT Focus Team yesterday in preparation for their quest to help the Information and Communications Techonolgy sector in Bacolod City in the next three years.

Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said they hope to increase the program in human resource development for the whole ICT sector. Batapa-Sigue yesterday thanked the Mayor for directing Executive Assistant Joe Marie Vargas to concentrate on ICT and Human Resource. She said this only shows that the city government under the Leonardia administration considers it a priority to undertake programs for human resource and to address the concerns of the ICT.

Leonardia said the IT Focus team has helped create 2,000-3,000 new jobs in Bacolod. He said one of the thrust of his administration is to maximize the benefits out of the partnership of the private sector and the government.

Batapa-Sigue said they would like Bacolod, through the support of the Mayor, to be the trendsetter for local governments in Negros and Western Visayas

IT Focus Team member Andrew Regalado said Bacolod is able to compete globally since it is dealing with foreign investors already and the Mayor is setting the trend in this part of the country. Bacolod is becoming an IT hub because of the support of the city government, he said. Eventually Bacolod will become the financial and IT hub of this part of the Philippines because of the foresight the Mayor and for his sustaining the gains of IT.

The IT Focus Team was recently cited by the Go Negosyo Bacolod as one of the 2007 Outstanding Bacolod Business-Support Organizations.

It was created by virtue of Executive Order No. 8, Series of 2005 signed by Leonardia on May 27, 2005 designating as chairman Batapa-Sigue, being also the chairperson of the Committee on Communications and Energy of the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Visayan Daily Star - 07192007

To be effective, I suggest our lawmakers pass a law that will create a Metro Bacolod Development Authority, like its equivalent the Metro Manila Development Authority run by Bayani Fernando.

This is to be composed of the cities of Bacolod, Bago, Silay, Talisay, and the town of Murcia.

The problem with traffic enforcement or solving the sidewalk vendors problem or even that of squatters is that elected politicians are afraid to touch them. They are afraid to lose the votes of the "masa".

But the MBDA chairman is a private person and is not voted into office.

Like in Metro Manila, the Mayors can lambast the MMDA chairman for his actions. Even to the extent of going to court. This way they earn brownie (we call it pogi) points from their masses.

But the MBDA Chairman will argue he is doing his job and has a tenure of office. The truth is the Metro Manila mayors like Fernando. He saves them from the difficult job. Fernando allows himself to be the punching bag.

And he is strong, strict, and firm to stand up. Now, he is very well respected. That is just what officials need, to be consistently strict. That is how discipline is imposed. They know in the end it's good for them.

If we have the MBDA here and a good chairman who is honest, fair, strict, and a competent leader, we can improve Bacolod and the neighboring cities.

We need this as early as now. In just a few years' time, traffic will be much, much worse. Sidewalk vending will be worse, too, because politicians are afraid to touch them.

But, we need Congressman Newks Puentevella, Congressman Kako Lacson for Talisay, Silay, and Murcia, and Congressman Jeffrey Ferrer for Bago. They can author a law creating the MBDA. This will be their legacy.

Software for SMEs launched in Visayas, Mindanao (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/48191/Software-for-SMEs-launched-in-Visayas-Mindanao)
06/25/2007
REPORT FROM BUSINESSWORLD

One of the world’s largest software organizations recently launched a business management application aimed at small businesses in the region.

The software of Systemanalyse und Programmentwicklung (SAP)was introduced in the city recently. It was earlier launched in the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Bacolod, and Iloilo.

Through SAP Business One, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can view both their business operations and customer activities in an instant. SAP targets SMEs since the latter comprise 99.6% of the business sector.

"Software financing is a new thing in the Philippines. We recognize the difficulty of SMEs to purchase software that can help them [improve productivity and services]," said Krish Datta, SAP managing director for the Philippines and Indonesia at the Cebu launch.

The Germany-based software company started product distribution in the Philippines in 1995. It also has software research and development centers in California and India.

"SAP Business One is tailor-made to meet the needs of small or medium businesses," marketing Manager Carel Villanueva told BusinessWorld.

Users can conveniently adjust applications according to their preference any time new functionalities are required, she said.

The software’s features include an easy-to-use interface that allows users to get answers faster and work more efficiently and proactively.

Another feature is the trademarked Drag&Relate function that instantly organizes information and transactions in an understandable format.

Business One is compatible with Microsoft Office products such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.

The program is flexible and adaptable to satisfy the user’s preferences. Changes go into effect across all relevant areas, making maintenance of the system less troublesome.

"It has one solution for everything. Management will then have an easier time," said Judy Maramo, SAP’s education sales professional.

Users benefit from this application because it only maintains one program that stores all data needed to run their businesses, Ms. Maramo added. In the long run, this application is supposed to come out more affordable and practical as well.

Upon purchase of this product, certified Business One partners can help other users customize their business needs. These certified partners can then teach users how to use these features to their advantage.

In as short as eight weeks, the program can be learned and implemented.

Business One is offered in the country through Orix Metro. Companies can eliminate capital expenditure and charge it to operational expense for up to 48 months. — Karla H. Gomez with Jessica Banzon-Natad/BusinessWorld (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/48191/Software-for-SMEs-launched-in-Visayas-Mindanao)

In April 1984, he made his big leap to the top of the pop music world in his first solo concert Gary V: A-Live at a jam-packed 15,000 seater Araneta Coliseum. He has held several concerts every year since then and in 1984 went on his first international show in Singapore.

Gary has recorded over 21 albums of which four have become gold (including the extended play of “Di Bale Na Lang”), five went double platinum, three have reached triple platinum and one even went further to hit the quadruple platinum mark. Three of his albums are released internationally, Dancin’ in the Moonlight in 1992 under Toshiba-EMI Records in Japan; Out of the Dark in 1995, a Christian contemporary album well-received in the United States; and an Asian release called Outside Looking In for Polygram Records. He even made the first interactive CD-ROM, the first of its kind in Asia, which features the life and music of an artist. Gary: Interactive Album turned gold in just one month.

Gary has also appeared in TV commercials for major products such as Coca-Cola, Sony, Jollibee, Colgate, Toyota, AT and T, Hanes Classics, Bioderm Germicidal Soap, Alaska Milk, and Max’s Fried Chicken and was a spokesperson for Unicef’s Fill the World with Love campaign in 1991 and Unicef’s iodized salt program in 1997. He is the first National Ambassador of Goodwill of Unicef for the Philippines after his appointment in December 1998. Gary V has garnered over 200 awards and nominations for his performances, recordings and compositions, including 5 of 12 Best Male Vocalist Nominations and 4 of the 12 Album of the Year awards at the Awit.

Although he is more involved with his music, Gary has also received citations for his acting after starring in twelve movies featuring him with some of the Philippines best actresses the like of Ms. Vilma Santos, Lorna Tolentino, etc. He has also performed in musical theater as the lead in “Joseph The Dreamer” and have guested on TV live shows and sitcoms through the years.

Despite the emergence of so many new talents over the years, Gary V. continues to make music that’s both meaningful and relevant to the times. He had also various accolades and good to note was the 1999 Awit and Katha music awards where he managed to walk away with a host of trophies that served to affirm of his musical contribution to the times.

And to confirm that his contributions continue to be appreciated, he again took top honors in the most recent Awit Awards, bagging the “Best Male Pop Vocalist” trophy.

Meanwhile, the first top 20 persons who will be able to present their ticket for Gary Valenciano’s concert ticket at USLS will also get the chance to meet and greet the artist with autograph signing and picture taking.

Friday the 13th
ASK GONEGOSYO By Joey Concepcion
Thursday, July 19, 2007

Most people still believe that Friday the 13th is unlucky and people try to avoid doing major things on this day. July 13 was a different story for us. Despite it being Friday the 13th, we still decided to have the GoNegosyo sa Bacolod. Prior to the event, we even experienced gloomy skies and a brewing storm. Fortunately, the storm didn’t hit the country directly and we did have one of the best weathers on Friday the 13th. It was a perfect sunny day as we woke up in the sleepy town of Bacolod. It has been 20 years since my last visit and Bacolod has changed a lot especially with the new mall chains and restaurants that dominated the city.

GoNegosyo sa Bacolod was held at the La Salle Coliseum with the support of our co-chair Brother Rolly Dizon. That morning, people were lining up as early as 6 a.m. It was filled to the rafters and thousands of people had to go home since the Presidential Security Guard had restrictions to do an SRO in the area where PGMA was going to pass by. The Negrenses came in by the thousands and this was the biggest crowd GoNegosyo has ever had. Close to 7,000 people filled up the La Salle gym and as PGMA came in, she was greeted warmly by the people. She did not care about security and posed with the people as she came in.

We brought in 25 entrepreneurs coming all the way from Manila, Cebu and Bacolod’s own to inspire the Negrenses. Most of the entrepreneurs from Bacolod already want to diversify their city from a mono crop to other industries. Danding Cojuangco is one of those who helped Bacolod transform itself beyond sugar by growing mango, bananas, mangosteen, pomelos, durian and other local fruits. When you go around the city you will see a lot of retail concepts that can qualify to be in the top malls in Metro Manila. Our group was treated to a dinner by Gaita Fores, a GoNegosyo entrep from Bacolod who brought us to her ancestral home and served us the famous chicken inasal among other delicacies. The Negrenses are great hosts and they cherish people who come to visit. Rissa Locsin and husband Dodo Villarama as well as Gina Bautista also attended the dinner.

Manila entreps had a great time in Bacolod especially Vicky Belo who was mobbed by her fans. I told her she was like a rock star as fans lined up for her autograph and picture. This is what we want people to idolize, the entrepreneurs. PGMA was happy to see the whole event and right after she awarded the entreps broke protocol and without any formalities got the mike from Paolo and gave a speech in Ilonggo with the right accent. The Bacolod entrepreneurs who were awarded by no less than the President were happy with the attention and honor given to them, plus the front page articles in The Philippine Star about their success stories. Our partner Philippine Star has gone out of its way in supporting the GoNegosyo advocacy to help us create the new Philippine Stars, the negosyantes. The Manila entreps surely inspired the people of Bacolod and I told the audience that day, that what we are seeing today is not a dream but a reality and to benefit from this economic boom one has to be a participant and not just part of the audience. We surely have planted the seed in the minds of the 7,000 people that attended. It is now up to them to be curious enough to nurture and water this seed. Even if only a few of them would one day be the Vicky Belo, Myla Villanueva, Vivienne Tan, Johnlu Koa, the Bayo sisters Dianna Lyn Agustin and Maria Corazon Bitong, Mr. and Mrs. Yanson of Ceres bus Liners, James Chua of Foodman, or other big tycoons who would generate thousands of jobs in the future, we would have attained our objective.

^^the under construction Sanpark bulding along lacson street of bacolod wherein the convergys will be put up. but sasieboy said that the location of of convergys daw malapit sa pepsi cola plant. diba malayo naman ang robinsons place or ang carmelites church going to pepsi cola plant?

pictures naman dyan ng kanyang schemes baka nakadisplay somewhere by the sides. how many storey ba yan? i believe that the lacson street will become line ups or will be fully occupied of the numerous buildings soon.

I think it would be better if we will just spread out and take pics in every location we are assigned...Ako, i can always take pics of the South, east and west side of Bacolod. I seldom go to the north part thats why it will be impossible for me to take much pics there. I know kyle can take over the North part. He goes there often anyway...Lets make Xeltran as the Campus hearthrob....take pics of the schools and if its not gonna be hard for him...he can also take pics of the churches in bacolod.

^^ It like this MBDA thing.

Sana highrise naman sa Talisay City para maging Makati in the visayas ito.. haha..

Talisay city is now in a master planned proposal !!!

:) ^^ Smile is it possible that you can meet up with Xeltran or Kyle for a photo session of Bacolod and its neighboring Cities and of course the NBSA

I think it would be better if we will just spread out and take pics in every location we are assigned...Ako, i can always take pics of the South, east and west side of Bacolod. I seldom go to the north part thats why it will be impossible for me to take much pics there. I know kyle can take over the North part. He goes there often anyway...Lets make Xeltran as the Campus hearthrob....take pics of the schools and if its not gonna be hard for him...he can also take pics of the churches in bacolod.

isama nyo si Sasieboy at saka si Juicyjude, they are a photographer also. kilala nyo si Kieron Tan daw sikat mana sya nga photographer sa bacolod invite nyo sa to join here in SSC.

Kabankalan named haven of Filipino, foreign retirees Publish Date : Source : tourism & information center

The Philippine Retirement Authority, a project of President GMA, has identified Kabankalan City as one of its satellite priority areas to be developed into a retirement haven for foreigners and former Filipino citizens.

PRA is a government corporation mandated to develop and promote the Philippines as a retirement destination with Col. Fernando Z. Francisco, RA (Ret.) as acting general manager.

Recently, Gen. Edgar B. Aglipay (Ret.), former PNP chief and now chairman of RTA , has come to Kabankalan to meet Mayor Pedro P. Zayco, Jr. and give briefings on the retirement program. and the possibility of making Kabankalan a priority area for retirement.

Joining Gen. Aglipay in his meeting with the mayor were Higino Sixto Garaygay, city administrator; Engr. Rogelio Diaz, city engineer; Jessie Tanmoya, city planning development coordinator and Fr. Numeriano Maquiran of Iglesia Filipina Independiente, Brgy. Binicuil.

Gen. Aglipay said that Kabankalan has met the criteria of an ideal site for the retirees. The city has a conducive climate, low cost of living, natural attractions, accommodation facilities, caring and friendly people and is safe for its residents.

The PRA has also identified other places like Baguio, Subic-Clark, NCR, Tagaytay, Cebu and Davao as ideal sites for the retirees.

Eric Elnar, retiree assistance officer III, said that it’s about time for the government to encourage Filipino retirees abroad to come home and to enjoy their waning years in their own country.

Mayor Zayco said that many big houses in Kabankalan subdivisions have workers abroad as owners. *emy

]Kabankalan City to have an Airport soon
Source : Tourism Office

The city will soon have an airport. More investors and visitors are expected to come that will push up the economy of the city.

A 40-hectare site in Sitio Cabangahan, Brgy. Hilamonan has been picked up by the Air Transportation Office technical officers as the location for this airport.

ATO personnel have already visited Kabankalan and gathered data for the technical requirements for the proposed airport with an initial 1.8 kilometer runway.

City engineer Rogelio Diaz said the airport will initially cater to light aircraft and will have the capacity for airplanes similar to those that land at the Bacolod airport. This will be funded by the Kabankalan government with a counterpart from the provincial government.

The airport is being eyed to boost tourism and economic activity in our area, Zayco said. He said its construction will not be too expensive as the city government has the equipment for leveling the gravel runway. The mayor hopes the work on the airport will start this year.

Meanwhile, Gov. Joseph Maraon said the Kabankalan airport is targeted to be a domestic airport that can also cater to flights from neighboring countries bringing in tourists to southern Negros.

Kabankalan City Domestic Airport is a new airport designed to serve the general area of Kabankalan City, located in the province of Negros Occidental in the Philippines. The airport would be the second airport in Negros Occidental, after Bacolod City Domestic Airport (which is set to be replaced by the newer Silay City International Airport), and the third airport on the island of Negros. It is located four kilometers northeast of Kabunkalan City proper on a sixty-hectare site in Barangay Hilamonan.[1]

The airport was mentioned in the 2006 State of the Nation Address of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, although the project is not receiving any funding from the Philippine government. The project is financed completely by the city government of Kabankalan, with the airport costing the city government around two hundred million pesos.[1]

Construction on the new airport commenced on March 9, 2007, with completion slated by 2010.[2] However, it is has not yet been classified by the Air Transportation Office.

[edit] Structure
Kabankalan City Domestic Airport will initially contain both cargo and passenger terminals, a control tower and loading and navigation systems.[3] It will also have an initial 1,800-meter runway,[4] although some sources indicate that the runway can have a length of up to 3,000 meters.[3]

It is said that some of the equipment of Mandurriao Airport in Iloilo City, when closed, will be transferred and used at this airport.[5]

Capitol pushes for hydro power to complement RP energy plan (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/July/20/topstory4.htm)

The Negros Occidental provincial government hopes to complement the Philippine Energy Plan through the construction of an irrigation highway that can also serve as a clean hydro electric source.

Ike Barredo, consultant on special concerns of Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon, said he will discuss this proposal of the governor at a Department of Energy PEP 2007 Update at L Fisher Hotel in Bacolod City today.

Acting Governor Isidro Zayco yesterday said he will also raise with Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap, who will be in Negros today and tomorrow, the request of the provincial government for the DA to fund the feasibility study of the Negros Irrigation Highway.

The proposed irrigation highway will be constructed in seven sites - Victorias, Cadiz, Sipalay, Sagay, Ilog, Binalbagan, and Don Salvador Benedicto.

Among the opportunities at stake in this proposed project is the development of the hydro-electric power plant, Barredo said.

This is because the large dams for the irrigation highway can also serve as a clean hydro electric energy source that will provide additional power for the province, he said.

DOE Undersecretary Guillermo Balces said the DOE is currently in the process of formulating the PEP 2007 Update that will provide the framework for the continuous fueling of the domestic economy through greater access to energy.

Part of the planning process is the conduct of public consultations aimed at soliciting inputs from stakeholders, he said, that is why a public consultation is being held in Bacolod.

Meanwhile, Yap will be Negros Occidental for the induction of the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry officials at L'Fisher Hotel tonight.

This morning Yap will be in Bago City to meet with farmers and tomorrow Zayco is set top meet with him to discuss the provincial government's bid for funding of a feasibility study for the irrigation highway.

Yap will also meet with leaders of the Negros hog raisers, sugar and prawn growers during his visit, Zayco said.

Capitol to turn over funds
for airport in Kabankalan
The provincial government will turn over next week its partial counterpart of P30 million for the Kabankalan airport project, Kabankalan City Mayor Pedro Zayco said yesterday.

He said the airport will not be as modern-looking as that in Silay City and its total project cost ranges from P200-P400 million. The bulk of the funding will come from the national government, he said. "It will be a feeder airport and will not be able to accommodate massive aircrafts," Zayco said.

The feasibility study made by the Department of Transportation and Communication is complete and workers from the city government have started clearing the area, he said.

The project site covers 96 hectares of land and three kilometers will be assigned for the runway, he added.

The mayor said only two kilometers will be actually developed for the runway and the remaining one kilometer will be set aside for expansion.

Since the site belongs to different landowners, Zayco said land acquisition will take time. So far, the city government was able to close 50 percent deals with landowners, offering P220,000 per hectare.

Meanwhile, aside from the airport project, Mayor Zayco said Kabankalan is constructing a P15-million slaughterhouse with double-A standard.

The new slaughterhouse he said will replace the old one which is "a little bit primitive in design." As this will be his last term as mayor, Zayco said he hopes to complete the road construction in the upper barangays of Kabankalan before 2010.*NAB

Philippine Mount Everest Team members due to return to BacolodBy Nicolas C. Delfin

MOUNTAINEERS Leo Oracion and Pastour Emata, both of the First Philippine Mt. Everest Expedition Team are coming back to Bacolod on Saturday.

Oracion was the first Filipino to summit the world’s highest mountain on May 17, 2006.

Emata, on the other hand, made a record-breaking feat of reaching the peak of Mt. Everest by only seven hours and 30 minutes.

Last year, their visit in Bacolod led by their team leader, Negrense Art Valdez, former Transportation and Communication (DOTC) undersecretary, was mobbed by their fans and supporters.

On Saturday, the two will also be joined by their women counterparts Carina Dayondon, Noelle Wenceslao and Janet Belarmino, who also became the first Southeast Asian women to also summit Mt. Everest.

The group will be here to share their experiences in their quest to summit Mt. Everest to all the people of Negros Occidental.

They will also be participating in a series of activities organized by the Recoletos Association of Mountaineers and Negros Mountaineering Club, Inc.

Among the activities include a caravan and school visit at the University of St. La Salle at 9 a.m. to be followed by a press forum at around 11 a.m. in Room 10. And, at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in the afternoon.

The group is also expected to pay a courtesy call to Representative Monico Puentevella prior to their scheduled mall tours and dinner party and trip to Mambukal Resort in Murcia town.

Tipon settles for bronze in Ukraine slugfest
By Henry C. Villalva

“I WAS able to avenge my earlier loss to a boxer from Turkey but I lost to my opponent from Azerbaijan in the fight for the silver medal.”

Thus said 15th Asian Games bantamweight boxing gold medalist Joan Tipon in a telephone interview with this writer moments upon his arrival Thursday night from an invitational tournament in the former Soviet republic of Ukraine.

Tipon, a native of Sitio Sibucao, Barangay Banago, Bacolod City was referring to the same Turkish boxer who defeated him in an alleged hometown decision during another invitational event held early this year in Turkey. “Nabawi-an ko siya, buti nga,” Tipon said.

The soft-spoken former Negros Amateur Boxing Association (Naba) child prodigy also said he is looking forward to another foreign exposure tournament this year as national players are entitled to at least two exposure competitions abroad in preparation for their stint in the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games this December in Thailand.

Asked as to whether it is true that he might have to skip competing in this year’s SEA Games to concentrate instead on preparations for a possible stint in the 2008 Beijing Olympiad where he is touted as one of the country’s best hopes for a first ever Olympic gold, Tipon said he will abide with whatever decision his coaches and the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (Abap) will make.

Tipon also brushed aside talks that he might not be fielded in this year’s SEA Games in Thailand along with fellow Asiad gold medalist Violito Payla since both of them defeated Thai bets en route to their gold medal victories during the 15th Asiad in Doha, Qatar. “It’s possible they (Thais) might do something to prevent us from winning but as to the extent of what they might do, I don’t exactly know,” Tipon explained in Pilipino.

Naba head and former Bacolod city councilor Juan Ramon Guanzon earlier said Tipon, among the current crop of Philippine national boxers “has the better chance of winning gold in Beijing owing to his height and boxing style.”

Lets Congratulate Tipon,He is a Negrense.:applause:

yes bacolod has an enough malls. hope and i guess robinsons place will be having a place for IT center if the expansions of that mall will be completed on mid or late next year. kasi the ExcelAsia and the PLDTeVentus has a longing planned to put up in bacolod. good under construction na pala ngayon ang Robinsons.

i think the Shakeys inside the Robinsons Metro is now closed.

if the airport in bacolod-singcang will be replace into a special economic zone and seaport surely the robinsons metro will be fully occupied by the store outlets and be hoping to expand that mall with having a cinemas.

even we have heard about the proposal of some big malls of companies to be put-up in bacolod like the Ayala & gaisano pero matagalan pa siguro yon. any updates about lopues groups of company? siguro na discourage yong lopues group to put up in brgy mansilingan when SM in bacolod was constructed.

SAGAY CITY MARINE RESERVES

Sagay City is considered one of the major fishing grounds in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. It is bounded in the north by the Visayan Sea, a portion of the country known for vast marine resources.

Man's wanton abuse of Sagay's marine environment resulted to massive destruction in the area. sometime in the late 1970's, the former municipal mayor and congressman, Alfredo G. Maranon, Jr initiated the conservation and management of the dying coral reefs with the help of the technical expertise of Silliman University Marine Laboratory headed by Dr. Angel Alcala. In the 1980s, a marine sanctuary was established in Carbin Reef as was formally proclaimed as a protected area through a municipal ordinance and was extended to Panal, Maca and the fringing reefs of Molocaboc Islands.

In 1995, the passage of Presidential Proclamation 592 declaring approximately 32,000 hectares of Sagay's Territorial Waters as Protected Seascape under the National Integrated Protected Area System (NIPAS) Act was a major milestone for the fishing communities.

A landmark law which provided fiercer claws to the protection efforts in Sagay, Authored and passed by then Congressman Maranon is Republic Act No. 1906 titled, " An Act for the Establishment and Mangement of Sagay Marine Reserve, defining its scope, coverage and for other purposes," and was consequently approved by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in April 14, 2001.

Sagay Marine Reserve is now being recognized nationally and internationally as one of the succesful marine conservation programs in the Philippines and has one the elusive 1997 Gawad Galig Pook Awards as one of the Ten Outstanding and Innovative Government Programs in the Philippines.
The City Government and its people continue to join hands in making Sagay City a place where prosperity conforms with environment by preserving its marine resources so that the next generation will be able to experience and enjoy them.

When i was a kid, i remember the Tagline of "Batang Negros"...There was even an Ad on TV about Sagipin ang mga Bata sa Negros...That time we were so down, economy was bad. That was the Bitter days of Negros..but Now, Bacolod and the whole Negros is growing fast...getting stronger little by little. Our place is now a major destination of tourists. A lot of Major infrastructures. This proves that Negros is more than just SUGAR..

Robinson's Place Bacolod turns 10

IT WILL be exactly 10 years ago on Friday when Gokongwei-owned JG Summit Holdings, Incorporated opened a mall in Bacolod City.

Named Robinson's Place Bacolod, the mall is located along the busy Mandalagan highway.

It's opening in 1997 marked another milestone in Bacolod's history and gave a lot of challenges and excitement in the business climate of the City of Smiles.

Erection of Robinson's Place Bacolod also made a lot of changes for Bacole$os' and Negrenses' lifestyle after having the very first giant mall in the City.
Robinson's Place Bacolod then never failed to meet the expectations of local shoppers by giving them first class shopping, quality and high-end entertainments, fine dining, among others.

In spite of financial crunch as well as the ups and downs that confronted Bacole$os and Negrenses, yet, Robinson's Place Bacolod remains there and continuous to serve as venue not only for shopping but for also for relaxation, entertainment, among other enjoyments for heavily laden people.

Thanks for JG Summit Holdings, Inc. for trusting Bacolod's economic status and purchasing prowess for its 10 years now of existence in the city.

In return, JG Summit Holdings, Inc. is bringing the country's Concert King Martin Nievera in a concert on July 28 as its way of thanking Bacolod and Negros shopping patrons for continued patronage. A grand fashion show to be participated by Philippine's finest models will also take place at the mall's Fountain Area the following day.

Among other shows are also being readied until the end of this month for all Bacoleños and Negrenses to enjoy so much at Robinson's Bacolod.

So reserve you money now on July 28 to 31 for you to enjoy shopping at Robinson's Place Bacolod with super big discounts.

The Sanpark Building would probably be a 4 to 5 storey building as the columns are a bit too small.

They should have joined the twin towers so that it would look more substantial. As it is, it looks too tiny.

I am surprised that the hotel is bigger than what I've expected. It will probably add another 80 rooms to the Bacolod Pavillion Hotel.

Yap leads groundbreaking of GK institute in Sum-ag
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap yesterday led the groundbreaking and capsule-laying activity for the Globe-Department of Agriculture-Gawad Kalinga Farming Institute at the ERH-GK Village in Brgy. Sum-ag, Bacolod City.

The GK Farming Institute is a 2-3 hectare farm establishment adjacent to the existing ERH-GK Village. Roberto Magalona, GK provincial head, yesterday said they intend to put 10 GK Farming Institutes all over the country by the end of 2007.

Other pilot sites for the GK Farm Institute are RCAL GK Village in Lipa, Batangas; Burog GK Village (Aeta Village) in Burog, Tarlac; Canada GK Village in Gasan, Marinduque; GK Panganiban, in Camarines Norte; GK Character Village in Camarines Sur; GK Jollibeee "Bee Happy" GK Village in Southern Leyte; GK Diamond Village in Cagayan de Oro; GK Robinhood Village in Valencia, Bukidnon; and GK Chicago Village in Concepcion, Iloilo.

Magalona said the purpose of the institute is to teach families to properly plant vegetables and other crops for self sufficiency and eventually for income generation.

He said they have adopted the slogan "No More Hunger In a Country of Abundance," and they envision that every GK site will have food sufficiency.

Magalona said they believe people should be taught to plant first to make them self sufficient aside from providing them homes to lift their dignity. "Hopefully, they will implement in other GK communities what they have learned from the institute," he said.

Yap, who came with his national and regional department heads, said he is very excited and willing to assist the project which he believes will address the problem of hunger in the country.

Meanwhile, Magalona said an awarding ceremony will be held today at the ERH-GK Village involving about 90 families.

Sister Dors Villanueva, Handmaids of the Lord chapter head, said they will be turning over seven houses today to the beneficiaries. She said the HOLD found ways to put up these houses and that the project was launched last year.

Villanueva said the houses are supposed to cost P50,000 each but since the prices of construction materials have gone up, it is estimated that these amount to about P60,000 by now.*CGS

Hi everyone hows life in negros?, I would like to ask a very simple question, I was there for 3 months working the project of NBSA, , We went on tour from San Carlos to Sipalay, I noticed in every cities there are number of banks at least 5 branches. and also an ATM machine. for us it is very convenient, we can get cash anywhere in negros and my co-workers was very surprise the easy access to ATM machine. even in a small city. to cut the story short my question is: why theres so many bank branches in negros? because the economy depends only on sugar. is there any products that pumps up the economy aside from sugar? I still heard even at this time the other province is the most numbered bank in the region. can anybody tell me or correct my statement? my co-workers just elated when they saw this bank branches. and they are filipinos from United States and Europe.

Negros does not depend only in sugar industry...right now the province is doing well in terms of handycrafts, fruits and vegetables, real estate, marine products and many more. Havent you noticed that in Lacson street, it is lined up with banks left and right. Somehow the businesses in Negros are doing well plus the remittances coming from our kasimanwas abroad are of big help in keeping the banking industry grow. :).
