anybody can check the expansion of L fisher hotel, according to my source inside they could no longer accomodate the influx of visitors. they always 90-100% booked every month. they already bought a huge lot at the back of the hotel. and according to my recent visitor a councilor of bacolod city, they approved recently a business permit one of the big company's in the philippines will put up mid-rise hotel in Bacolod next year. but I will not tell you guys which one. I will give you a hint: Robinson, SM, and Ayala. guess who? so people in bacolod just find out do some research. good luck.

Another hint ngpaflorida.

i was there last monday at robinson bacolod with my brother, puli sa sagay. Wala gawa tawo bisan, lunch break, ilisipon lang naga kaon sa mga foodcourt kg fastfood chain. Thats the reason siguro why the owner prefer to put some bars and coffee shops sa magiging expansion nila kay mas grabi ang market sine.

amu gid na kon ang IQ bala ara lang sa in between his/her legs and not in between his ears.. and a lot of peeps here envy or just plain crab mentality, with the way the economy of Bacolod is soaring.. Bacolod is not a regional city/capital yet it is one of the pillars of our country's economy. The income is much higher compared to other regional cities.

Well if thats the case, then one should STOP USING STIMULATING WORDS as well. Like giving remarks as "measuring up ones IQ" just because of his/her interpretation of the diagram. I'm not that affected but I consider Bacolod as my second city since some of my relatives live there and I frequent the place especially when I was still a kid. I mostly just lurk here and read about the latest in Bacolod but sometimes I also post if there's something I need to say such as in this case.

The diagram was pretty starightforward, you just had to analyze it long enough before jumping into conclusions. And that's why I needed to post because I notice that some forum members here just jump into conclusions often.

Anyways I hope people have learned their mistakes. I'm just going to end this so that the thread can move along

Manila orchestra coming to Bacolod (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/August/29/people.htm)

The Manila Symphony Orchestra is coming for a one-night concert in Bacolod City at the Santuario de La Salle, University of St. La Salle, on September 5 at 8 p.m., a press release from organizers said.

They are brought to the city through Prudential Guarantee-Bacolod, to coincide with the company's 20th year anniversary.

Fresh from their successful performances at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, the orchestra will repeat the same program of Beethoven Leonora Overture, Grieg Piano Concerto, and Tchaikovsky symphony No. 5 with its conductor Helen Quach and pianist Cristine Coyiuto.

The venue seats only 890 and tickets are priced at P500 and P1000. For more information on the concert, interested parties may call the Office of Prudential Guarantee-Bacolod at Tel. Nos. 434-5445 and 434-6954, the press release added.*

All I can say is that mahal talaga ang tickets which is actually priced reasonably given the fact that the Manila Symphony Orchestra will perform at Santuario de La Salle. Santuario is actually fit for the concert :)

About the diagram...
The blue-colored floor area of Robinson's in Bacolod is the combined floor area of both Robinson's Place and Robinson's Metro Bacolod. Yes, Robinson's Place Iloilo is actually bigger than Rob's Place Bacolod, no doubt about that. But the diagram combined both RMB's and RPB's floor areas, so we have that. But then, after the expansion of RPB, the combined floor areas of RPB and RMB will be bigger than RPC, nuff said. No need na for conflicts.

Anyway, did anyone realize that the map was so erroneous? I mean why is it pointing Bacolod in the area of Romblon (is it?). One thing's for sure though, it isn't pointing to Negros Island.

Bacolod may skip Olympic festival (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/August/29/sportnews1.htm)

With less than two weeks away from the Visayas leg of the Philippine Olympic Festival in Iloilo, all indications point to Bacolod City skipping the multi-event meet aimed at searching for potential athletes to the national team.

Susan Jamero, the Bacolod sports and youth development officer, said the city has yet to receive any communication from the Philippine Olympic Committee, a statement refuted by CJ Juntarreal, a member of the POF secretariat.

In a separate interview, Juntarreal said she sent the invitation to the city last week.

But Jamero said it is unlikely that Bacolod will send a delegation for the festival, citing time constraints. She added that her office has yet to draw up a budget for the meet.

"Because of this situation, we may not have the budget in time for the competition," she told the DAILY STAR yesterday.

Jamero's statement came on the heels of the Negros Occidental Provincial Sports officer Manuel De Oro's declaration that the province may skip majority of the events in the POF's 17-discipline calendar.

Juntarreal, who was in Iloilo yesterday to meet with the local POF organizing committee, said, "The POC will try its best to convince Bacolod to join the event".

She also said that the Department of Education will allow student-athletes to participate in the meet as part of the agreement it entered into with the POC.

De Oro said only the Negros' 15-Under and 17-Under football squads are bound to see action in the Sept. 10-16 event. The provincial sports OIC added his office has yet to identify athletes to join the other events, like athletics, archery and boxing, among others.

POF chairman Robert Aventajado wrote Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon on Aug. 1, reiterating the POC invitation to join the meet, which had been postponed twice, following initial host Antique's appeals.

Among the responsibilities of a participating province are to shoulder the transport costs, spend for uniforms, and provide food of its athletes for the duration of the competition, Aventajado said in his letter.

The POF's objectives, Aventajado said, include the sustaining of the momentum of the success of the RP Team in the 2005 Southeast Asian Games; the identification of young talents that can be developed to represent the country in international competitions; the propagation of the philosophy of Olympism that embraces the values of friendship, solidarity and fair play, and the acceleration of sports development in partnership with local government units. *CPT

anybody can check the expansion of L fisher hotel, according to my source inside they could no longer accomodate the influx of visitors. they always 90-100% booked every month. they already bought a huge lot at the back of the hotel. and according to my recent visitor a councilor of bacolod city, they approved recently a business permit one of the big company's in the philippines will put up mid-rise hotel in Bacolod next year. but I will not tell you guys which one. I will give you a hint: Robinson, SM, and Ayala. guess who? so people in bacolod just find out do some research. good luck.

-->> I heard about this stuff... I know it was always Robinsons Land Corporations (RLC). Here's a quick information for all forumers.

1. AYALA -- significantly, AYALA LAND is the foremost real estate developer of the Philippines. But is specializing in Housing like most of the Ayala Developments. Ayala North Piont (Talisay), Mantazzione (Bacolod-Talisay), Ayala Alabang (Muntinlupa), Tagaytay Highlands, Ayala Metro South (Laguna), etc, etc.. They also develop Malls in the like of Greenbelt, Glorietta, TriNoma, Alabang Town Center, Market! Market!, and Ayala Center Cebu. But it is very rare for an Ayala Development that caters to mostly Hotels.

2. SM -- The Premier Supermalls Developer. They also venture in Leasing and IT Services. Most probably, they would have to reconsider the idea of putting up a Hotel.

3. RLC -- One of the most successful in both Leasing, Housing Real Estates, Malls and Hotels. RLC is leading the way from its competitors. Actually, yung Robinsons Expansion nila sa manila is may kasamang Hotel na iyon. The matatapos na siguro yung tinatayong Hotel nila sa Pioneer sa Mandaluyong. Then sa Metro East at yung Robinsons Place sa Cebu is located in Cebu Midtown Hotel which is an RLC Company. So its RLC to construct a new world class hotel and convention center dito sa bacolod.

>>> I also heard SM Putting up a Convention Center here in Bacolod and Condominium Towers. But that would be years from now. sa ngayon enjoy na lang natin what bacolod has been blessed of.. okiatch?

So Bacolod Robinsons is 65,702 sq meters plus 20,000 sqm added the grand total is 85,702 sqm. so far dago man gid ah:banana:

>>> yeah I agree.. mas dako sya compared to other MM Rob Malls and VisMin Malls but still, iloilo might probably the biggest in terms of floor area (including the carpark sang rob kay vital structure na ang carpark nila sa total floor planning nila and RP Iloilo carpark is 25,000Sq meters.) so to end things up heres the FACT:

Rob Iloilo -- 77,000 + sq. M (including 25,000 sq. M carpark)
Robs Place Bacolod -- 49,000 + sq. M (excluding 33,250 sq. M carpark and 20,000 sq. M expansion)
Robs Metro Bacolod -- 20,000 + sq. M (excluding 2,000 sq. M carpark)

kamo na lang bahala mag differentiate...

My question is why only Bacolod and Manila expansion how about the rest of the mall? so that mean good market ang Bacolod. thats answer to my question.    :bash: :bash:

In 1997, RLC suicidal decision is to construct a Supermall in Bacolod. Suicidal because of the lowbeat economy and a medium sized low-income city. But turn-out and consumer volume proved them wrong. From 1997, RP Bacolod is consistent in top for sales and leasing average with 99% occupancy and 18 months waiting for new lessee applicants. It ranked 5th after Galleria, Manila (paco-adriatico), Metro East, Starmills and Imus (last three malls being newbies constructed after after 1999). This proves that RP Bacolod has a good market range.
am talking only square meters not a main building. means robinsons department store and robinsons metro. any idea how many hectares ang robinsons bacolod?

>>> 13 Has. presently and currently bidding another 15 - 20 Has para sa Lot Portion at the back of RP Bacolod for development.

^^ bacolod is a good market,... there's no doubt about that...

over the past year,.. robinsons' has been renovating the "old" mall.. new layout, tiles, and even the CR.....

what they did to the cinema complex is quite nice too, new seats, renovated entrance halls, foyer and CRs....

>>> The renovation is in preparation for the coming in of SM City. Surely, Robinsons's would not want to be surpassed by SM in a short little of time kay nangabudlay guid sila sa Bacolod market for 10 years. But still, RP Bacolod is in the heart of every negrense. Budlay i reject ang nakasanayan na. Thats why people still flock to RP despite the coming of SM. Sa bagay, based sang mga nakad-tuan ko nga RP all over the PI, isa man guid sa mga classic ambiance ang RP after Galleria and Ermita and Starmills.

actually sipaway island is expensive resort most of the tourist are from US and European they cater big time spender. and already published in US market. this is the next destination and also dont forget Sipalay thats why they rushing the completion of an airport. the ala boracay destination soon. about the Robinson mall yes the biggest outside metro manila in term is square meters.

>>> Factual Indeed. Sipaway Island is quiet hmmmm "expensive" but may man to sila beach resorts that caters to simple middle class vacationists.

Could it be possible that the computations in the image presented already includes Metro Robinsons Bacolod?, which actually has a negligible retail space since more than 90% of its space is either occupied by teletech or is vacant?

>>> Robinsons Metro Bacolod is now being 80% Occupied by Teletech Bacolod after expansion. Other Local and International Offices also occupies the Structure like Generali Pilipinas, His Life Ministries, ELJ Builders Incorporated, Shakeys, Dang's Inasal, Dunkin Donuts, RG Optical, Munsterrific, Airwalk Ouland and a Lotto Outlet.

>>> 95% Occupied ang Robinsons Metro Bacolod

;15039549']actually yung total area na yung combined robinsons place and robinsons metro yun..

The diagram was pretty starightforward, you just had to analyze it long enough before jumping into conclusions. And that's why I needed to post because I notice that some forum members here just jump into conclusions often.

now, I understand why we're focusing on bacolod now since it's our capital... but negros occidental has more than one major city, with it's own character and famous in it's own right and I believe they deserve our attention so here are some of them ,... I'll start with the Paris Of Negros : Silay

Silay City is a 2nd class city in the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 107,722 people in 21,446 households. It has a sizable commercial and fishing port and is the site of the new Bacolod-Silay City International Airport, which will replace the Bacolod City Domestic Airport.

The Legend of Princess Kansilay

A local legend tells of how Silay City got its name. It is said that in the days of the datus and rajahs, there once lived a princess named Kansilay. An attack on the settlement by pirates was thwarted when the princess bravely led the people in the village's defense. The fight was furious and the princess fought like a seasoned warrior. Murals that used to grace some of the city's public buildings depict her as a fierce fighter wielding a huge talibong, a short native single-edged sword. The pirates were routed, but at the cost of the princess' life. Her paramour arrived in time to see her die. In grief, the people lovingly buried her. To their surprise, a tree grew right over her grave, the first Kansilay tree, a final gift from the brave princess.

Brief History

Silay was first settled in 1565 under the name "Carobcob", which means 'ribcage' in the Hiligaynon dialect. In early writings, the settlement was also referred to as "Calubcub", "Caracol" and "Caraco".[1] The last two variations mean "snail" or a "spiral" in Spanish. On January 25, 1571 it became an encomienda under the Spanish colonial system prevalent during that period. In 1760, it became a pueblo or town, and by 1896, it had become a leading sugar-producing area because of the Horno Economico (sugar mill) built by a Frenchman who became a permanent resident of Silay, Yves Leopold Germain Gaston.

The Philippine flag was first raised in Silay on the afternoon of November 5, 1898 when Spanish soldiers stationed in the town surrendered to the hacienda laborers and the landowners who besieged the garrison.

Silay has been known in the past as the "Paris of Negros" and the "cultural and intellectual hub of Negros" because of Silaynons' love for knowledge and works of art. It became a chartered city on June 12, 1957 by virtue of Republic Act 1621.

On June 7, 2003, Silay City became the first and only Local Government Unit in the whole Philippines to hold a referendum through a People's Initiative approving the 2003 Annual Executive Budget.

Today Silay is one of the 25 tourist destinations in the Philippines. It is the seat of arts, culture and eco-tourism in Western Visayas.

Silay is also the name of the 1535 meter-high volcano cone near the city of Silay. On its slopes lies Patag, the site of the Japanese forces' last stand in Western Visayas during World War II.

Tagasilay, also referencing the Kansilay tree, is a barangay in the Philippine city of Zamboanga in the island of Mindanao. The apellation 'tagasilay' translates to 'from silay' or 'of silay' in Hiligaynon

History

The Negritos, natives who led nomadic lives at the foot of scenic North negros Mountain ranges, originally inhabited Talisay. In 1788, families of Malay descent settled in the prestine part of Negros Island and named it Minuluan. Unknown to many, the sugar industry in province has its very roots in Talisay. The enterprising Recollect priest led by Fray Fernando Cuenca, spurred the economic development of this once sleepy sitio through the planting of sugarcane in vast tracts of land we call ‘haciendas’.

The seedlings, brought from Spain, thrived well in the rich, loamy soil. Fray Cuenca improved sugar production of the crude wooden mills with the invention of ‘Molino de Agua’-and the rest they say is history. The Spanish colonizers became guardians of our economic, socio-political and spiritual lives, and with more of the Miniluan population embracing the Catholic faith, the sitio was decreed a town on September 20,1850, with San Nicolas de Tolentino as its patron saint. It was renamed Talisay after the tree that grew in abundance along the mouth of the Matab-ang River.

To accommodate the growing population, three more barrios were established – Dos Hermanas and San Fernando in the northern part and Conception in the South.

At the turn of the century, Talisay became a significant player in revolt against Spain through the leadership of General Aniceto Lacson. The wily general and erst while Katipunero of the the North teamed up with General Araneta from the South during the victorious Cinco de Noviembre uprising in 1898 that saw the Spaniards capitulating without bloodshed. The intervening years saw Talisay growing and methamorphosing into the budding city that is today-full of promise and potencial. On February 11,1998, Talisay through the effort through the effort of its local offical led by the Mayor Amelo Lizares was finally elevated into a city.

Japanese to start study on
Negros-Panay bridge
BY CARLA GOMEZ
A Japanese firm is undertaking a preliminary study on the construction of a bridge that will connect Negros to Panay, Gov. Joseph Marañon said yesterday.

Masami Kumishima, executive vice president of Katahira and Engineers International, informed the governor that they are conducting a partial study on the most economical and ideal place to build the bridge. The firm will come up with more detailed information of the cost of the bridge five months later, Marañon said.

The SugarFree Band will stage their Biyaheng Bayan Caravan Concert, at the Bacolod City public plaza, tomorrow, 7 to 9 p.m., a press release from event organizers said.

The hottest OPM band from Manila will perform as part of the new low price scheme campaign of SuperFerry. The show will be hosted by Manila-based comedienne Tuesday Vargas.

Interested parties may reserve seats by calling Kate Alconga, corporate communication specialist of SuperFerry, at cellphone number 0917-889-2718, the press release added.*

==========================================================

‘BAMBOO Rocks Negros!’ Today (http://www.negrosdaily.com/aug3107e1)

BAMBOO band will rock Negros today as the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) Student Government and SMART Buddy presents one of the premiere bands in the country. “BAMBOO Rocks Negros!” will be held today,
August 31, 8 PM at the UNO-R Ampitheater, Bacolod City.

BAMBOO is a Filipino alternative rock band founded in 2002 by the former vocalist of Rivermaya, Bamboo Mañalac. He serves as the band’s frontman, which is named after him. According to Ira Cruz, the guitarist, the word bamboo also relates to strength and durability with an island feel to it. Two of its members, Mañalac and Nathan Azarcon, were formerly part of Rivermaya. The other two members, Cruz and Vic Mercado, were former instrumentalists of another band, Passage.

Four years after their departure from Rivermaya, Mañalac and Azarcon caught up again with each other, during which Azarcon introduced him to Cruz and Mercado who were then members of pop ballad band Passage.

Their debut album “As The Music Plays” (2004) was a success, powered by the strength of the carrier single “Noy-Pi”. Other noted hit singles in the album were “Mr. Clay”, “Masaya”, and the radio single-only, “These Days”.

“Light Peace Love” (2005), the band’s second album produced a whopping five hit singles namely: “Hallelujah”, “F.U.”, “Much Has Been Said”, “Truth”, and “Peace, Man”. According to the band, this album was a response to the success of their first album. Mañalac was quoted saying, “...the second album was like a diary. It was more of a personal album for us.”

The long awaited third album “We Stand Alone Together” (2007) was released. The singer described it as the last part of a trilogy which featured more obscure Pinoy folk/rock gems and foreign classics. The album contains revived songs like its carrier single “Tatsulok”, originally by Buklod, Anak Bayan’s “Probinsyana”, and international songs such as Paul Simon’s “50 Ways To Leave Your Love” from different generations.

Organizers have beefed up security for this concert, working closely with the Bacolod police which will deploy at least 50 police personnel and the UNO-R security group at the venue to prevent any untoward incident. A firetruck and a mobile medical unit also lie on standby for safety precautions for the thousands of concert goers expected to turn out tonight.

All ticket holders will have a chance to win prizes from SMART, Penshoppe, Pepsi, and other sponsors during a raffle and on-stage games. Tickets will be sold at P100 and P300.

This concert is also brought to you by Penshoppe, Pepsi, Soundworks Pro Audio & Lighting, Travel Expert, Diva Beauty Lounge & Day Spa, Sueño, Mang Inasal, Figaro Coffee Company, Killer Bee, Teletech, and Negros Daily Bulletin.

Bacolod’s first flyover finished in 5 months

By Edgar Cadagat

BACOLOD CITY – A flyover which could effectively decongest traffic may be finished by March or April next year or within five months from the start of the project.

In a press conference yesterday at his residence, Bacolod’s lone district congressman Monico Puentevella said the construction may start November this year.

The P385-million project will be funded through a program linked with the British and Philippine governments and will be part of Malacañang’s Tulay sa Kaunlaran Program, said Puentevella.

The program saw its inception when he had the opportunity to accompany the President during her official trip to London this year.

The budget for the construction of the flyover which will start from Galo-Lacson St. and end at the Regional Hospital will be coursed through the DPWH.

It is part of a sisterhood program being carried out between both countries, the Philippines and Great Britain.

The flyover could decongest traffic because vehicles crowding that portion would be able to use the structure’s upper and lower portions.

The Bacolod congressman said he is happy the city government and the city council are cooperating in the implementation of the project because, for one, before the actual construction starts, obstacles such as the electrical system overhead must be reinstalled.

The flyover is the first to be built here. Another one will be constructed in the Ninoy Aquino Drive-Lacson St. area.

gOOD POINT, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM OVERHEAD MUST BE REMOVED, SAME ALSO HERE IN ILOILO DIVERSION ROAD

In bacolod is the only casino filipino to operate it's own hotel, the place exudes the architecture and beauty of the old mansions of the sugar barons during the iprovince's heyday, and even to this day the descendants of those very same genteel aristocrats would venture it's 10,405 square foot gaming space features 274 gaming machines and fifteen table games, a gentle reminder of what the place represents,... the old bygone era of negros' guilded age..

Bacolod celebrates a 10th ‘birthday’

By Linda Bolido
Inquirer
Last updated 00:25am (Mla time) 08/26/2007

MANILA, Philippines - A 10-year-old in Bacolod City is having a growth spurt—by more than half its current size.

Robinsons Place Bacolod is expanding from 4.5 hectares by about 2.5 hectares more with the annex that is expected to open sometime next year.

But, with or without the projected expansion, the capital of Negros Occidental seemed to think it had every reason to celebrate a decade of malling at Robinsons.

Bacolodnons and local government executives enthusiastically joined mall officials during the recent 10th anniversary celebration of the city’s first mall.

City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia put the festive mood in perspective in his effusive keynote speech during the short program that formally marked Robinsons’ 10th year in Bacolod and launched the new annex.

“The opening of Robinsons (in the city also) opened so many doors. It marked the birth of the mall age in Bacolod. Afterwards, many things happened,” Leonardia said.

Robinsons became a symbol of investors’ confidence, the mayor said. Thanking and congratulating the mall chain management at the same time, Leonardia said, “You saw what others did not see and the others then followed.”

He said Robinsons led the way in turning the self-proclaimed City of Smiles into a true urban center. “When you came here, Bacolod was never the same again,” Leonardia said as he proudly announced that the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry had named Bacolod as the most business-friendly city in the Visayas.

Real crowd-drawer

Nilo Mapa, Robinsons Malls general manager, while grateful for the mayor’s kind words, also thanked the tenants. “Robinsons builds malls but tenants (draw the crowds),” he said.

Mapa who, with Joseph Sian, group property manager for Robinsons Bacolod, formally unveiled an artist’s perspective of the expanded mall, stressed that the Robinsons group “does not just build malls but grows with the community.”

When Robinsons opened its mall in the city 10 years ago to provide the locals a shopping-dining-entertainment haven, it brought to Bacolodnons already well-known names like its department store and supermarket, Handyman Do It Best, giant fastfood chains, and major retailers in fashion, accessories, etc.

At the same time, it gave home-grown entrepreneurs a chance to showcase their products in a much bigger market, affording them greater exposure not just among the locals but also the many people visiting Bacolod.

Food establishments Pastry Shop of Bob’s, El Rincon, Bacolod Lechon Hauz, Junie’s and Cake House found profitable spots in the malls. Other local businesses that set up in the mall include the Big Ben Original Levi’s Store, Chez Rose, Basix, Pelts X’Press, Nine Eleven and Galleon.

After 10 years, the tenants are still with the mall even as new establishments are opening.

Sian said customers would soon see at the mall National Bookstore, Geox & Alberto, Octagon, Spirits Lifestyle, Bongbong’s Pasalubong Center and July Boutique, among others. The global toy chain Toys R Us and Robinsons Appliance Center have already opened.

Sian added, “Renovations have been undertaken to include a cozier food court area (and) a certified Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity) zone on level 3 (complementing) the newly refurbished Robinsons Movieworld cinemas.”

Success Stories: Christine Sicangco: Lady of the Lamps

When Christine Sicangco established Christine Sicangco Lighting Designs, Inc. (CSLDI) in Bacolod in November 1994, it was to put into practice her extensive experience in lighting design. It was a tough decision - the concept was relatively new in the country, and there were no local practitioners she knew of who could be role models to relate and benchmark with. With a complement of seven workers and four administrative staff, Christine set up shop in a 170-square meter area on the third floor of a family-owned building in San Juan Street, Bacolod City.

CSLDI handles architectural lighting design and consultancy and specializes in the design and manufacture of various lighting fixtures. The line consists of table lamps, wall sconces, floor lamps, and pennants or hanging lamps. Various colors of handmade paper are crafted to serve as shades and, when combined with either ceramic, steel, wood, or stone lamp bases, provide a unique lighting concept.

Christine prescribes the appropriate intensity of light, and suggests the most energy-efficient and aesthetic lighting design for a given space or setting. She worked as a lighting designer for New York-based lighting design companies, Horton-Lees and Johnson Schwing Hammer.

As such, Christine was able to put together a portfolio that includes lighting designs for places like the Chase Manhattan Bank, the National Geographic Society, and the BASF headquarters. She has also done lighting designs for showrooms of famous designers Giorgio Armani, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan, J. Crew, Barney's, and Jill Sanders.

Within a year, CSLDI had built a client base consisting of such establishments as Nature's Village, the Bob's Restaurant chain, the Philippine National Bank, and the Bacolod Bargain Square Mall. After operating for more than a year, Christine began to set her sights on markets abroad, but she did not know where to start. Through the seminars she attended, she learned that exporting meant producing in bigger volumes.

At that time, CSLDI's monthly capacity ranged from 100 pieces each of lighting fixtures and shades - not enough to export. Through her sister, who manages a furniture company, Christine learned about the MPEX program of the Department of Science and Technology's Technology Application and Promotion Institute (DOST-TAPI). The MPEX program provides consultants to companies that need just a little push in order to get going in markets abroad.

The consultants suggested a design for a 400-square meter factory building specifying the materials to use, and prepared a floor plan identifying the different sections. Furthermore, they advised Christine to provide individual worktables for the workers to minimize distractions, and incorporate finishing operations within the factory to contain the spread of toxic fumes.

A design for a spray booth was also prepared. The expenses she incurred for the consultants' three-day stay with the company - about P5,000 - was a pittance compared to the tremendous impact of the P35,000 worth of government assistance extended by TAPI. CSLDI moved into its new premises in 1997, a 700-square meter building standing on a portion of a family-owned three-hectare property in Sitio Bito, Barangay Estefania Villamonte in Bacolod City.

Now, 95 percent of the company's products are exported. The biggest buyers are from France, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and Belgium. The lampshades also reach such places as Abu Dhabi, Bahrain, Beirut, Canada, the US, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and Hong Kong. Sales figures from 1997 - the year when CSLDI broke into the world market - doubled, from over P2.3 million to P4.1 million in 1998.

However, Christine realizes that just as a company may experience birth pains, its growth could also be uncertain. At the moment, the company gets its handmade paper materials from only one supplier in neighboring Iloilo province.

She plans to produce her own handmade paper in the near future, and has already attended a training program on handmade paper making organized by the DOST provincial office.

Christine is also exploring other materials to serve as lamp covers: though she is researching into the potential of fiberglass, her goal is to eventually use glass.

A foodie's Bacolod

MANILA, Philippines - Our three-day visit to Bacolod gave us a taste of the gastronomic goodness unique only to this progressive city. We indulged in the best Negros had to offer - fish, shellfish, native chicken barbecue and even burgers, and some of the best desserts.

Here are places you can check out in Bacolod for filling, pleasant and memorable meals.

Aida's at Manokan Country

They say that a visit to this city is not complete until one eats at Manokan Country, the home of chicken inasal. And so we tried Aida's.

Talk about good food; you got it here, yes, almost anytime. Aida is the name of Mang Bert Tarrosa's wife who passed away a year after the place was established in 1983.
It's been in the business for 24 years - and the secret of its long-staying power? Hot, tasty, down-home cooking eaten on the spot.

We had our fill of inasal (skewered, fish sauce-calamansi-garlic-vinegar-marinated) chicken parts: wing, liver, intestines, legs, tasty even without the self-mixed dip.
The meat is juicy and tasty, which perfectly matched the steamed rice basted with chicken oil (pure rendered chicken fat) with atsuete.

Pecho (chicken breast, P48 per stick) is the restaurant's piece de resistance. But also popular are Pa-a (drumstick), P48; Pacpac (wings), P40; Esol (chicken bottom), P40; Atay (liver), P18; Baticolon (gizzard), P18; Dugo (blood), P15; and Liug (neck), P25. They are served hot off the grill.

Mang Bert was one of the most congenial restaurant hosts we had met this side of Bacolod. He willingly shared information on how inasal was marinated and roasted. "No catsup, please!," he quipped.

Surprisingly, Aida’s gets its supply of fowl from Manila since, he said, Bacolod has very limited sources for chicken.

There's nothing fancy about Aida's eatery. The place is naturally ventilated, right, no air-conditioning unit but it's cool with music playing all the time. And the service is fast.

American diner

Bob's was the first American diner and drive-in restaurant in Bacolod back in the 1960s. Established by Conchita Varela Sicangco, its first name was Bob's Big Boy, until it was eventually changed to Bob's in 1980.

Its famous giant cheeseburger made a name for the restaurant. And through the years, Bob’s has become one of the most successful family-owned restaurants in Bacolod. Today it’s being run and managed by Sicangco's children, including husband-and-wife Bobby and Cynthia Magalona.

Any given day, Bob's, already a landmark in Bacolod, is packed with loyal clients, ordering the house specialties - sizzling steak, fried chicken, pizza and gourmet sandwiches.
The extensive menu also lists hearty soups, vegetables and salads, and pastas. Its fresh lumpiang ubod smothered in fragrant garlic has been its top seller as well.

We enjoyed the Family Fiesta Tray, which had all inasal favorites - chicken, pork and fish. The Family Wagon consisted of squid rings, baby back ribs and potato wedges.

Dessert at Bob's? Ahh, it's paradise. A cool concoction of strawberry shortcake, Mocha Madness and Pavlova is a total dining experience that should not be missed.

The two-story building is a favorite place for parties and private functions. The spacious ground floor also houses a Mongolian bar.

Bob's has also branched out to other food-related services such as pastry shops, which now has five branches all over Bacolod. Cafe Bob's has also been a favorite hangout for good coffee.

Bagsakan

Pala-Pala is a night market, a bagsakan of fish where fishing boats and trawlers regularly unload their catch of the day, deep into the night. Bacolod is known for its number of pala-palas around the city. It is like dampa in Manila, where you choose the freshest of the catch and have them cook it the way you want it.

The 18th Pala-Pala on Lacson Street has been doing well in the business. This rustic place offers a menu that changes with the seasons. Delicious and healthy, it always features the bounty of Bacolod - gindara, tanigue, deep-sea crab, prawns, scallops, oysters.

Our dinner consisted of kinilaw na tanigue with salted egg and black beans, followed by sinigang na ulo ng tuna, buttered prawns, sizzling gindara steak and scallops cooked in garlic and butter. Most of us washed the meal down with fresh buco juice.

We also had adobong pusit. To top things off, we knocked down crabs (alimango) from a tank, transformed quickly in a wok. Nothing very fancy, but fresh and sweet. Such comfort food.

The 18th Pala-Pala, owned by siblings Jose Manuel Lopez and Sylvia Lopez-Golez, offers simple, fresh food, unadorned with any kind of fancy sauce. Just the richness of the sea and the simplicity of the cooking. This kind of food is what makes eating worthwhile.

OCTOBER FIGHT
Bacolod mayor to carry Pacquiao’s championship belt anew

By Carla Gomez
Visayas Bureau, Inquirer

BACOLOD CITY -- Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia will once again carry Manny Pacquiao's championship belt into the ring during his rematch against Marco Antonio Barrera on Oct. 6 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, in a telephone interview from Cebu Saturday, said he asked Leonardia to carry his belt because "the mayor is a good friend, and the people of Bacolod have been kind to me."

Leonardia was the one who carried Pacquiao's belt when the Filipino boxing champion defeated Mexican fighter Erik Morales during their super featherweight fight at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada on Nov. 18, 2006.

The HBO pay-per-view fight extravaganza, the third match-up between Pacquaio and Morales dubbed the "Grand Finale," was watched by millions of people all over the world.

Leonardia said on Sunday he would be honored to carry Pacquiao's championship belt at the boxer’s next fight.

The mayor recalled he carried the championship belt of Pacquiao for the first time during the boxer's fight with Oscar Larios at Araneta Coliseum in July 2005 and in his fight against Eric Morales in Las Vegas in November of the same year.

"It was Pacquiao who asked me to carry the belt into the ring and I was even surprised. But I was happy to do it as a show of moral support as a friend and a Filipino," Leonardia said.

Leonardia said he and Pacquiao first met through a common friend in 2005.

Leonardia said he had Pacquiao named as adopted son of Bacolod City during the city's charter day on Oct. 19, 2005 "for the inspiration he had given to the Filipinos and the boxers, many of whom come from Bacolod City and Negrosm, Occidental."

Leonardia, who has become fast friends with the boxing champion, is one of the godfathers of Pacquiao's daughter, Mary Divine Grace, who was baptized in December 2006.

When Pacquiao came to Bacolod City in July 2006, a huge crowd gathered in the streets to cheer him in a parade organized by Leonardia.

On Saturday, the mayor visited Pacquiao who was recovering from fever in Cebu where he has been training for his October fight, and said he was there to give moral support to an adopted son of Bacolod.

Pacquiao said he was feeling better, his training was on schedule and going very well but he could not say how the fight would go.

"Bahala na si Lord. [It’s up to the Lord.] He is the only one who knows how the fight will go. Let us just pray," he said.

Pacquiao said he would leave for the United States on Sept. 22 for the Oct. 6 fight and would return immediately after.

He said he hoped to come to Bacolod City sometime between Oct. 15 and 18, to join the MassKara Festival, the city's weeklong merrymaking event held every October.

Pacquiao also promised to bring here his MP Warriors basketball team to play an exhibition game against a local team during the MassKara Festival.

Good memory Erick:wink2:! When are going to see Lopue's Masskara Dancers again? I would to love see Lopue's involve in the Masskara Dance Parade again. They have the most beautiful mask i've see ever seen and that lovely sparkling gold color costume plus thier performance, that made them the grand champion in thier last participation. They were really impressive.
I,ve seen Villamonte last 2005 performance and there costume, all i can say is wow.It has a resemblance with a Thai national costume.I wonder how heavy it was, the head dress. It seem they are unbeatable.

Correct they have catch so much attention with thier performance, the custome and of course the mask. When i visited a colleague in Singapore, they did not forget to mention that Masskara Festival have once performed in the street of Orchard Road. They told me that most of the spectators enjoyed and liked watching them because they danced very well. They said as if they never get tired and I said to myself, if they only knew how much endurance and resistance it does needed to be survive in Masskara Dance Parade.

16TH VISAYAS AREA BUSINESS CONFERENCE

Businessmen to tackle tourism, biofuel issues

Businessmen from different provinces in Central Philippines will meet in Bacolod City Sept. 7-8 for the 16th Visayas Area Business Conference.

Frank Carbon of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry said the conference will take up potential of Visayas area for tourism and alternative fuel. The conference will also discuss the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program in relation to the plans of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to make Visayas a super region, Carbon said.

In her 2006 State of the Nation Address, the President underscored the growing tourism industry in Visayas and during her visit to Negros Occidental in July, she also announced her plans of creating an ethanol corridor in Negros Island.

Carbon said the business sector needs to consolidate its plans in response to the programs of Arroyo. The conference's theme, "One Visayas, One Vision, One Vibrant Economy", promotes unity and a common goal for the Visayas businessmen, he added.

Sentiments of businessmen on the agrarian reform program will also be formulated into a position paper that will be presented to the House of Representatives, Carbon said.

Invited to speak during the conference's workshop are Senators Francisco Pangilinan and Juan Miguel Zubiri. Keynote speaker will be former prime minister Cesar Virata.*NAB

correct gid ya meg worldwide na ang masskara, wala sang duplicated nga festival sa philippines.

there are other festivals who has also performed outside. basi makibot ka. ang babaylan sang bago is just one of the VERY FEW festivals in the world to have performed at the hallowed grounds of United nations in CH. babaylan has done US and europe tour last year after they peformed at the aliwan. upod sang babaylan nag lakat ang tuna festival last year. dapat upod nila ang masskara kag dinagyang, but the 2 did not push through kay wala budget ang respective tourism offices.

dinagyang has recently performed in TX, usa. Alikaraw has recently performed in SG after pintados kasadyaan.

I would prefer the title created by Smile778 "We're More Than Just Sugar".Simple yet it says all but other suggestion would be welcome:cheers: .:)

i dunno if donna porter still has the energy to choreograph Lopues. eheheh tigulang na ang lola nyo. hihi regarding sa ila mask.... ang manug ubra mask sang lopues amo na ga ubra subong mask sang group ni panoy. their mask is not made of papier mache. its fiberglass already. and its freakin heavy. ang 2006 nga mask ang pinaka bug at. mga approx 2kilos. and 2005 nga daw thai ang design mga approx 1.5 kilos

ON 'TONTON & BENJO' Talibong1 Talks (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/Starlife/2007/September/02/feature2.htm)
http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/cosmosnegros/p6.jpg
(Wanting to keep their privacy, the maker of the 'Tonton & Benjo' series and his friends show their many colorful faces.)

A 19-year-old Ilonggo has gained wide following for his Tonton and Benjo adventure series via the Internet's YouTube, a site that has made -since 2005- video sharing and blogging, and, lately, posting of comments, possible. The adventure series of the young Ilonggo, who assumes the name Talibong1, is apparently the most widely viewed locally-produced YouTube entries this side of the world.

Three of his most widely-viewed works are actually spoofs of the period films, Troy and 300. StarLife columnist Carlo Leonardia described Talibong's videos, in his Come to Think of It item on Aug. 12, as ones "which have spread faster than cellphone sex scandals and have gained him a cult-like following among wired Ilonggos".

A YouTube check showed that the final of the trilogy, Tonton ang Paghaharap, has registered 578,747 views as of Friday morning and the number continues to rise. Benjo kag Ang Batalyon Pitbull has 457,105 hits and Benjo Mangayo Ko Kwarta was viewed 353,053 times. While the hits should be waning by now, StarLife noted that the figures rose by about 14,000 for Mangayo Kwarta, about 23,000 for Batalyon Pitbull and 28,000 for Paghaharap in the past four days alone.

StarLife managed two weeks ago to know the whereabouts of Talibong1, who has requested his real name not mentioned - from a former high school classmate at Central Philippine University, where the YouTube sensation is presently a Nursing senior.

StarLife-in its attempt to find out the reasons of the series' phenomenon - compiled three reasons based on viewers comments: the Tonton and Benjo series are short, thus does not demand so much of the viewers' time, they use familiar language in the script- the Ilonggo dialect and expressions that are common (bords, pilo-pilo, clean cut, IR-or incident report -, a term used in Nursing classes when things go off the norm) yet given dimensions of humor and hilarity. Viewers also find appeal to the delivery of the script which is far from being studied or rehearsed.

The following is our email interview with Talibong1, who also sent us the photos (other than the YuTube screen reproductions) used in this article. He expressed appreciation for the Bacolod media's interest in his story (he has been featured, too, in the current St. La Salle's SPECTRUM magazine issue and acknowledged that grabe ang kagat sa Bacolod and acknowledging that the first interview requests came from the Bacolod media)

Why did you choose the name Talibong1?

Talibong is a place in Zarraga town where we had our Community Health Nursing duty. I thought it's unique monicker -- one of a kind.

When did you start your Benjo and Tonton production?

Sometime in April or May.

How did the idea of producing Benjo and Tonton and other videos come about? Why those names?

My friends and I just thought of it when they slept over at my place one night. Benjo and Tonton - these guys are by band mates (laughs). I chose their names because they're my friends. More names will be coming soon, (laughs).

Do these guys join you in your production?

I usually do it by myself. But sometimes Benjo, Tonton and a few others, like Myro - about five of us - are there for some ideas and effects, laughter especially (laughs), XD (term for "smiley" or laughing face").

Prior to your Benjo and Tonton series and other YouTube clips, what preoccupied your time?

My studies… computers and (laughs) sleep. I've been a computer fanatic since birth I think (laughs).

Since when did you get into YouTube?

Since it became operational. What made you decide to put your videos on YouTube?

Trip trip lang na.

YouTube shows a lot of feedback from viewers. When did you start gaining wide following?

What wide following??? (laughs). Oh, the feedback comes from anywhere in the Philippines and from any free country in the world. Like what countries?

Dubai, others in the Middle East, U.S.A. especially, all over, Africa included.

How many video shows have you made? Which is the most popular?

Ten. I really don't know which is popular but the one with the most number of views is Tonton: Ang Paghaharap. Each viewer has his own favorite.

How often do you produce?

Everything comes on the spot actually.

Whose voices are those of the characters?

They're mine. All mine, including the cat's. (laughs).

Where did you get your video production skills?

I didn't study anything on that. Everything is self-exploration (laughs). Piho ba. Did it ever occur to you that you might have violated copyright laws? Did you seek any legal advise?

There is a violation I believe but in YouTube many are doing it. Tani wala lang eh (legal problem) kay pasadya man lang ni. No, I haven't asked for any legal advise.

How are you doing in school?

I'm surviving. Kabit-kabit (laughs).

Has the production affected your studies?

Not really.

How would you describe yourself as a student?

Clean cut (this expression has become one of the most popular punchlines in his clip, apparently referring to soldiers who do not sport long beards).

Do people in the university know you as the mind behind Benjo and Tonton series?

I think some, other than my friends, know.

In one of your scripts, you mentioned your university as the school to go to. Any feedback from school officials about your works? What do they say?

I was told some officials met and talked about it. I don't know if it's really true...pero wala naman to kuno…but, thanks, my teachers love my work!

Tell us about your family.

Tagu-on ko lng ni ah…haha (StarLife later learned his father works abroad).

How do you manage to protect your privacy? Will you ever show or introduce yourself as the maker of Tonton and Benjo?

Well, a few people know me by now. But I don't mind it. Pabay-i da sila ah… Some know me. Now and then some get to know me.., but not always. The others know me long before I made the series.

Do you have a 'fans' club' now?

I learned there's a Benjo and Tonton Fans' club in Friendster (an Internet friendship link). Whahahaha, Salamat sa nag-ubra (While he did not admit it, StarLife learned of plans for the holding last weekend of a Tonton and Benjo activity during the University Week celebration at CPU).

How long do you intend to keep the Benjo and Tonton series going?

As long as it kicks! In your scripts, there appears recurring lines about education and going to school. Is this intentional to put across some values? Do you do a lot of brainstorming with your friends?

Because the production is on the spot, generally, the lines flow freely especially that they are not formally scripted. Wala na ko may mahambal nga daan..ti gaguluha lang na iya (laughs). Ga purutikul na lang ko nay a mag start na ko dub (laughs).

Online comments show plenty of positive feedback from your viewers. You get negative feedback too…?

Negative feedback? May ara gid na ya…damo (laughs).

What is the most touching feedback you ever got?

Honestly, the ones sent by viewers abroad telling me….nga dula ila mingaw kag enjoy gid sila.

Why do you think your series has become so popular?

It's funny… I really don't know why.

Mentors do and practice what they teach. This was the message that eight faculty members of the School of Architecture and Fine Arts and Interior Design of La Consolacion College conveyed anew when they held their week-long art exhibit which ended Friday at SM Bacolod City.

The display at SM City was the 15th annual show staged by the LCC-ARFIEN faculty. They included paintings, photo-based mixed media and mini-installation art works.

The faculty-artists and their were Antonio Tejado's oil on handpaper paper 'Icon Series 1, 2, 3 & 4'; Roy" Aguilar's' charcoal works, 'Tukap-Tukap Series 1, 2 & 3'; Mary Ann Manganti's Pastel on paper works, 'Kalong ni Nanay Serye Uno, Dos, Tres'; Arch. Hugo Flores III's 'Kulay 1 & 2' in water color; Raymund Fuentes 'China Silver 1, 2, & 3' - 'Gilded Buddha', and Objet d' Art photos; Cherryl Bacay's pencil on paper works, 'Papillon 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, & 6', Arch. so guys, suggest kayo ng thread titles for Bacolod.. and someone must create a poll...

1.) New Dragon Economy << Too high falutin...
2.) We're more than just Sugar << Sana we would not concentrate more on sugar now...
3.) Philippines' City of Smiles << Refers to Bacolod City only
4.) The Philippine's Sugar Capital << Pede rin, kaso, like I said, sana not on sugar naman
5.) Home to Philippines' Sweet and Charming People << high falutin also
6.) IT Capital of the Philippines << umm, no, cebu is more advanced
7.) SPORTS CAPITAL OF THE REGION/PHILIPPINES << not much...
8.)

suggest lng kayu

Yatco please add to the choices:
Bacolod City and Negros Occidental- "The City of Smile and The Province of Panaad Festival"

The title's too concentrated to Masskara and Panaad...which do not really describe Bacolod and Negros as a whole. Festivals lang sila. If that would be the title, I would think that the best that Bacolod and Negros can offer are their festivals only.

For me, I'd rather stick to generic titles because it's neater to look at. Look at the other regional threads outside the Philippine forums. Sure, they surpass Philippine cities, and they don't even need to put those "titles" on their threads. That makes the excuse that "tourists would really be interested if the thread has a catchy name, blah, blah..." null and invalid. If I were a tourist I'd do research on my own rather than believing some "titles" which do not or only speak of half-truths about the city/province.

Woah! I didn't know that Metro Bacolod is only composed of Silay City, Bacolod City, and Talisay City. I even thought Bago City, Murcia, and the northern cities were included. Although it seems to me, grabe ang urbansim sa Silay and Talisay, including Bacolod, so maybe if Bago would improve, it would become part of Metro Bacolod also.

kyle@1008
September 3rd, 2007, 11:53 AM
what Bago lacks is commercial areas, too little development in that part,.. what many people do not know is that the city's income is actually higher than talisay and silay

most cities in negros occidental, lack huge commercial areas, but then they're agro-industrial development would generate a huge income, sometimes even higher than more urbanized cities, by this virtue they achieve component city status,.....

most municipalities in the Philippines are not granted cityhood status due to lack of money, the major factor has always been income and population...

What events are usually held in the Bago Coliseum?
If they'd start to promote it, then tourism would really pick up fast, given the fact that there are many intact ancestral houses at the coliseum compound.

And what products are their main exports, if there are?

kyle@1008
September 3rd, 2007, 12:07 PM
the coliseum is used for cultural shows or sports event, they're always free.. the san miguel philharmonic, the kundirana, stage plays starring major movie stars, have been staged there,...no entrance fee, it's something the city provides..

main exports include, muscovado (brown sugar), Mineral water (viva) , silk, salt, handicrafts, electricity...and in the near future, ethanol (bio-feul)

the geothermal plant in bago city is the major source of electricity for western visayas,.... it also send power to cebu.....

of course I've seen it,....sure their big, like any other gated community. But no , the yanson house wouldn't be on the expensive list of western visayas,... it's doesn't hold a candle to Nelly's garden in Iloilo, the Lizares-Rodriguez mansion, the Hacienda Balbina Manor just to name a few,....

the most expensive houses in WV, are not in it's subdivisions

& the latest the 2 province (negocc & negor) is pushing into a 1 province...this is already a long proposal...the last news update i was heard from a radio about this on last march...

If this would push through, what would be the capital? Bacolod City is too far from Oriental and Dumaguete City is too far from Occidental. I think this wouldn't be feasible. We discussed this once in Sociology eh. It's very hard to unite the island because of geographical concerns (mountain ranges, especially, Mt. Kanlaon), dialect barriers (I know only a few Cebuano terms...), and lifestyle, to name a few.

kabankalan it's better daw to make it a capital....kabankalan is now amazing city....soon they have a 2 ethanol plants,,,airport,,,robinsons shopping center,,,etc...shopping centers like gaisano and lopue's has already opened...2 jollibees are opened and the future coming of Mcdonalds...good intitutions serving in the city,,,the Negros State College soon is a university,,,beautiful city hall,,,new city public market...the future coming of local call center...there's already a proposal to have an economic zone...etc...

Yes, I've heard na maganda na raw ang Kabankalan, pero I've never been there. A trip there would be nice though.

Kabankalan should really take advantage of their land size. AFAIK, it is the largest city in Negros in terms of land size. Economic zones would really be beneficial. Construction of schools, banks, restaurants, and other establishments would also help in thje city's development.

Convergys inspires academe, industry partnership (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/09/03/bus/convergys.inspires.academe.industry.partnership.html)

ENGLISH and information and communications technology (ICT) instructors called for a continuous partnership between the contact center industry and the academe in Bacolod and Negros Occidental recently.

About 50 college and training instructors from 27 colleges, universities, technical-vocational schools and finishing course providers in Bacolod City and Western Visayas participated in the Communication and Culture Training Orientation and Calibration Workshop For Bacolod and Negros Occidental Schools conducted by Convergys Philippines last August 31 and September 1.

Online memorial for Cebu's Nenita "Inday Nita" Daluz. Post testimonials here.

The workshop intends to give school officials a better understanding of the skills requirements of the contact center industry by presenting an overview, identifying the basic customer service skills required at the entry level, explaining the different communication competencies that help ensure customer satisfaction, and exposure to select training techniques used by Convergys.

Luis Miguel Lopez, senior manager for Communication and Culture Training of Convergys Philippines together with Blanche Lapez were also present during the activity.

Convergys’ Country Manager Marife Zamora and Business Development Officer Joe Marie Mercado gave an overview of the industry and their company, which now has 11,000 employees in the Philippines.

Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue during the workshop sounded off the mission of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) which is to strengthen and sustain the status of the Philippine Cyber Corridor as the preferred ICT destination in the global ICT space.

The Cyber Corridor has already provided jobs to 238,000 Filipinos and contributed an estimated $3.6 B to the nations revenues, she said.

The CICT has been conducting score carding exercises in various locations in regions wanting to be part of the corridor.

The exercise determines the viability of other areas outside Metro Manila as potential locations for ICT investors willing to relocate to the regions.

Currently, 33 locations have been scored, 14 of which have locators already existing, and this include the cities of Bacolod and Iloilo in Western Visayas, Batapa-Sigue said.

The challenge lies on sustaining adequate supply of skilled ICT workforce.

The CICI reported that the dwindling human capital skilled in ICT due to mismatched education/skills versus industry requirements.

There is a strong need to continuously review and update the curriculum of the Philippine education system and integrate ICT therein to produce a more competent and job-ready workforce.

^^ Bago lacks Commercial Areas because they will not allow chinese investors to come.... not like of Talisay and Silay, they are more Advance when it comes to economy.... Silay now has Lopues... Jollibee, Lopues and Soon NBSA... then Talisay too.. they have the most expensive subdivisions in Western Visayas... the Ayala North Point and Mantazionne... and Honda Bacolod and Ford BAcolod are found in Talisay

Bago City is more Agriculture. Please correct if i'm wrong. It is groomed to become the food bowl of Negros Occidental.Bago City has Rice Research Center.

It's not a matter of opinion, google for it if you want...Ayala North Point has a good name, but the most expensive subdivisons are the local ones, houses at Sta. Clara, Villa Valderama and La Salle Avenue could very well lay claim to the title of most expensive...

You are definitely born and raised in Bacolod. Most Bacolodnon prominent and affluent families lived in this Subdivisions for ages. Some houses in this Subdivisions have thier own swimming pools.

^It's a heritage site, home of the Lopezes. Definitely very very expensive. Their limousine costs around 10 million, how much more their houses along Jaro

British firm to invest P4B on 2 bioethanol plants
The Phil. Star, Wednesday, September 5, 2007
Bronze Oak, the British investor in the San Carlos bioethanol project in San Carlos City in Negros Occidental, is eyeing two more bioethanol plants — one in Tarlac and another in Bukidnon, according to outgoing Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) head James Ledesma.

With each plant estimated to cost P2 billion, Ledesma said Bronze Oak is expected to invest P4 billion for the two plants.

Ledesma said the company plans to put up two more refineries in still undetermined locations.

The Bukidnon facility, Ledesma said, is targeted to have an annual production of 40 million liters, while the San Carlos facility will have an annual production of 30 million liters.

The San Carlos plant, Ledesma said, is targeting a production of 100,000 liters a day or 30 million liters a year.

A five-percent blend as required under the Biofuels Act would need at least 268 million liters, Ledesma said.

If the San Carlos plant produces only 30 million liters and its other projected plant in Bukidnon produces 40 million liters, Ledesma said, additional production from four to five other plants is needed to meet the five-percent blend requirement by 2009.

The required blend will be raised to 10 percent by 2011. Investors in bioethanol projects, faces several hurdles that include ensuring adequate feedstock for their plants which require an investment of at least P2 billion each.

Ledesma and incoming SRA head Rafael Coscolluela stressed the need for more action on encouraging bioethanol production.

Coscolluela noted that while there are 10 to 16 interested investors in bioethanol production, only the San Carlos Bioethanol project is proceeding ahead.

Revamp at Riverside, hospital not for sale (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/September/05/topstory1.htm)

The Dr. Pablo O. Torre Memorial Hospital, also known as Riverside, in Bacolod City has undergone a top level revamp and is no longer for sale, its chairman of the board and president said yesterday.

Some of its officials had confirmed earlier that there were negotiations for the sale of the hospital.

But yesterday, its Board of Directors announced the appointment of Dr. Hector L. Torre, its chairman of the Board, as the hospital's concurrent president, following the retirement of Joaquin L. Torre.

"We were born and raised in Negros, we would like to continue serving our fellow Negrenses," Epifanio L. Torre, who retains his position as hospital executive vice president and treasurer, said. Other new appointees are Mark L. Torre as Senior Vice-President for Operations and Socorro Victoria L. de Leon PhD, CPA as Senior Vice President for Finance and Corporate Planning, Dr. Andrea J. Torre, VP Medical Affairs, and Emmylou Velano as Internal Auditor.

The Board of Directors is composed of Dr. Hector L. Torre, Dr. Pablo L. Torre Jr., Mark L. Torre, Epifanio L. Torre, Dr. John Ignatius Ledesma, Dr. Rodolfo Nonato, Dr. Romeo Reyes, Fr. Ernesto Javier SJ, Angelina U. Berrie, and Edwin Javellana.

"Together with a team of committed professionals, we will strive to continue the legacy of our father Dr. Pablo O. Torre, who founded the hospital, which is to provide quality and excellence in the delivery of health care service with skilled, competent and compassionate partners within the context of dialog, transparency, accountability and performance," the hospital chairman and president said.

"We also intend to embark on innovative improvements, provide upgraded services and acquire new equipment which will continue to make the hospital world class as it faces the challenges of a global society," he said. The hospital has grown from an 8-bed clinic 53 years ago to a premier medical institution, he said.*CPG

MassKara '08 to focus on City's icons (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/09/05/feat/masskara.08.to.focus.on.city.s.icons.html)

THE 28th MassKara Festival set Oct. 1-21, 2007 will focus on Icons of Bacolod, Mayor Evelio R Leonardia announced Wednesday.

As a prelude to the 70th anniversary celebrations set next year, the 2007 MassKara Festival kicks off our campaign to raise awareness and pride for things related to our beloved city, Leonardia said.

Icons of Bacolod are symbols, institutions, products, landmarks and even personalities that have become synonymous to Bacolod like the piaya, the bandstand at the plaza and the San Sebastian Cathedral.

We are excited at how our artists will interpret this motif through the MassKara song, street dance, kiosk decorations and the other activities, the mayor said.

Last year, the festival focused on Masks of the World. MassKara 2007 is being organized by the Silver MassKara Festival Organization, Inc. which has been overseeing the festival since 2004.

It will have two festival sites the Bacolod public plaza and the areas between SM City and Manokan Country and the BAY Center.

Inquiries about the festival can be coursed through the MassKara office at the Bacolod Tourism Office at San Juan St., Tel. No. 433-7362.

Visayas biz gab aims to develop market opportunities
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

"SIXTEEN Chambers of Commerce from all over the Visayas will converge here in Bacolod to discuss market creation and leave a legacy to the grandchildren of this generation."

Jose Ma. Zayco, Executive Director of the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (MBBCI), said on the forthcoming 16th Visayas Area Business Conference (VAB) this coming September 6 to 8, 2007, to be held at L'Fisher Hotel.

According to Zayco, "We estimated more than 150 presidents of various Chambers and active Chamber-member business chief executives will be coming."

Zayco also said, "Our role is to define and segment market opportunities that would make us ready for the 2010 especially when the country committed to the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other trade agreements will be implemented."

However, he said, "We don't exactly know the scenario for our sugar businesses here in Negros when trade agreements are fully enforced."

Among the highlights of the 16th VAB is a consultation meeting with WTO officials and discussions for 'updates on competitiveness," Zayco said.

Also, Zayco stressed that since the Visayas was categorized by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as a mega-tourism area, opportunities in tourism and franchising investments will be discussed, too.

"In particular, we will be looking at medical tourism where the provinces have the strength even better than Metro Manila," he said.

This as he stressed that from estimate alone, a dental package here will cost some US$3,000 plus the chance to visit families, while in the States, it will cost US$7,000.

"Now, we have to work out investments in such kind of a tourism. We have good specialists here, perhaps we need to offer opportunities for hospital takers," he added.

Zayco said alternative biofuels like, biodiesel from kasla, ethanol from sugarcane, coco-diesel from coconut will continue to be discussed and augmented by defining sources of raw materials for stakeholders.

The plenary sessions on September 8 is very vital with the country's former prime minister Cesar Virata as keynote speaker on the area of land reform, he said.

After his talk, the conference will formulate a resolution for the Philippine Business Conference (National)," Zayco said.

Aside from Virata, Senators Migz Zubiri and Francis Pangilinan are also guesting the three-day conference.

^^we are happy the torre family decided not to sell Riverside ospital. instead, they rotated the leadership with the retirement of its Pres. Joaquin Torre. Now the president and retaining his board chairmanship is Dr. Hector Torre. Executive vice-pres and treasurer is Epifanio torre who has been active since their eldest sister Pamela Henares was President. What we feared when there was a talk of its sale was the possible loss of the legacy of the late Dr. Pablo Torre

the torres have confirmed that they still own riverside medical center, and that they're not planning to sell it anytime soon.....

that's good....I guess

^^we are happy the torre family decided not to sell Riverside ospital. instead, they rotated the leadership with the retirement of its Pres. Joaquin Torre. Now the president and retaining his board chairmanship is Dr. Hector Torre. Executive vice-pres and treasurer is Epifanio torre who has been active since their eldest sister Pamela Henares was President. What we feared when there was a talk of its sale was the possible loss of the legacy of the late Dr. Pablo Torre

Torre Family has been managing well the hospital. They have been able to transformed the hospital into one of the finest hospital in the region.Through the years they have upgrade thier equipments and facilities.I think Riverside Hospital future from the hands of the Torre would be certain.
Bacolod at the moment need some more medical facilities. Some Negrosanon still travel to Cebu for some of thier medical check-ups.

No videokes, please (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/September/07/letter.htm)

It's now September, and next month, we will celebrate our Charter Day celebration with a blast of the MassKara Festival.

I consider myself as one of the innovator of this Masskara Festival way back in the 1980's, where I was a member of La Consolacion College-Bacolod school brass band. We use to practice the theme of the first MassKara with other school bands. In that celebration we were placed in between schools, government and private representative in the parade. And the whole public plaza was surrounded by an open type, breath-free kiosk, where you can enjoy eating our specialty inasal na manok, and you can see your other friends also eating and enjoying there. You can also enjoy listening to very good music in every kiosk, aside from the live bands who perform at the center stage.

The celebration was so very delightful, where you can see many local and foreign tourists buying and eating at the public plaza. I enjoyed very much that kind of celebrations until I graduated from college course, and the city introduced another type of theme with the help of a sound system.

That kind of celebration has changed a lot to a better type. But what I am against right now is the setting up of a videoke or sing-a-long in every kiosk. It is quite enjoyable listening to the singers but it is quite irritating when they have had more than enough in drinking. I would appreciate it if kiosk owners would play concert music rather than let those "hubog (drunks)" sing. Often, the lousy singing of the drunk customers would create friction and end up in trouble.

Sisterhood pushed with Chinese city
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod is pushing for a sisterhood relationship between Bacolod City and the City of Wuhan, China through the help of the Chinese Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines.

A resolution addressed to the Chinese Ambassador to the Republic of the Philippines Li Jin Jun requesting him to facilitate the possible forging of a sisterhood relationship between Bacolod City and the City of Wuhan for the purpose of establishing technical, cultural and sports exchanges and in promoting tourism, was passed by the SP Wednesday.

Authored by Councilors Alex Paglumotan and Homer Bais, the resolution said the Committee on Tourism and Sister Cities has received an official letter from Wuhan Mayor Li Xianshing through David Young, World Professional Boxing Federation president, seeking initial steps and the laying down of groundwork for the establishment of a sisterhood relationship between the Cities of Bacolod and Wuhan.

It said Wuhan City, the capital city of the Province of Hubei, is the fifth and largest and one of the tourist attractions in mainland China and is renowned for its historic "Yellow Tower."

Meanwhile, the SP also passed another resolution requesting the Mayor and/or the Solid Waste Management Board to conduct a feasibility study on the viability of engaging the services of the private sector in the garbage collection in the city.

Authored by Councilor Greg Gasataya, the resolution said R.A. 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000 provides for the encouragement of the participation of the private sector in the solid waste management.

It added that there are several local governments in Metro Manila and the entire country which engage the services of the private sector in their SWM and such practice has been proven to be effective and efficient.*CGS

As I know sister cities of bacolod are Mandaue City; Tagaytay City; Long Beach, California; and Keelung, Taiwan... the mayor Bing said that Bacolod might be the one city in the country with the most number of sister cities... this will be a big help in the city development and progress...

^^ Rolling Hills Bern, probably one of the best memorial park in the region.Lots are quite expensive but the place is most likely similar to the Loyola Memorial Park in Paranaque.Very secured memorial park.Have you seen the church beside the park? It's beautifully done.

^^ Toto Neomind Thank you sa liwat!Eastern of Bacolod part landscape has change so quickly.I saw Jollibee and Mc Donald face to face each other again. It seems Jollibee is determined in climbing to number one spot in Bacolod. I am so amazed with the exterior design of those building. Not to mention the Sky light ceiling which is becoming a trend in Metrodome and this new building on construction in the East.Very environmental, save electrical energy.

Monthly waste market fair set at SM City

AFTER its successful launch on June 9, 2007, Waste Market Fair at SM City Bacolod has become a new dimension to malling. This new trading activity in the mall simply proves that there is money in junk.

Customers who want to dispose of papers and cartons, plastic items, computers, and appliances are invited to come at the North Transport Terminal of SM City Bacolod where recycling companies are ready to buy them.

This joint project of SM Supermalls, Department of the Environment and Natural Resources, and the Philippine Business for the Environment will start from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

At SM City Bacolod, the Waste Market Fair is scheduled every second Saturday of the month. One can transact business with recycling companies and exchange recyclable items for cash at the Waste Market Fair. It could include items that have no value or those that are considered hazardous like polysterene, Styrofoam, cellphones and batteries.

For SM Supermarket, SM Food Court, SM Cinemas and other mall tenant, it became a practice to drop off their excess items during the fair.

Other nearby residents also brought in their old stuff like computers, karaoke, electric fans, stoves, radios, television sets, and exchanged them for cash.

SM City Bacolod started the Waste Market Fair in support to Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act. The official buyers of this month’s waste materials are Oriental & Motolite Marketing Corp., Ini Aton Merchandise of Mr. Mike Baylon and Desquitado Junk Shop.
