Big market seen for paper charcoal
Bacolod City — There is a market waiting for charcoal made of paper.
Mona Jardin stressed this point during her recent demonstration of paper charcoal making to more than 80 members of the organized eco-aids or waste pickers at the dump site of Brgy. Felisa.
The Bacolod City Peace and Order Council (CPOC) led by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) tapped Jardin of the Diara Entrerprises to introduce this new technology with the aim that eco-aids will adopt it as their alternative livelihood other than waste picking.
Jardin said papers are soaked in water for three days and then compressed in a mechanical devise releasing as much water as possible before it is dried under sun light for three days.
The best result shows a compressed product about half the size of a sardine tin can, light and dry. Five pieces of that and can already boil rice and cook a viand.
It is more economical compared to wood charcoal because it is made of paper and decreases the dependence of households in using wood-based charcoal, therefore, environment friendly.
“The best place to produce the product is here because paper is abundant,” she said.
Jardin admits the technology is not yet perfected as the product can still be improved and the costing has yet to be established.
“That is why we are coordinating with the DILG to develop the technology and frame-up its marketing aspect,” she said. (PIA-LOL)

^^ Very nice,Indeed! So nagclose ang Japanese Resto and replaced by mang Inasal. Most of the Bacolonon in the South usually hang out in Gaisano City. When the La Planta Hotel and the building beside opens it will create a diffirent business atmosphere and environment along that strip.

^^ We'll see how Gaisano City be affected when those mentioned establishment starts thier business. But only one direction i can see the effect would be and it's only going upward.I heard that there is an automobile showroom to be opened after Gaisano City where the sidewalk market is located. They are trying to evict the market because it is where traffic builds up during rush hour and to give way to this car showroom.
We are quite helpless without Smile778 in development news.He tends to be the one who can confirm our quiries and update the latest.Am just wondering if the mods can consider ressurecting Smile778.:)

Resto jungle at plaza
A food kiosk at the MassKara Festival site at the Bacolod Public Plaza with its "out-of-the-box" concept has caught the fancy of festival goers and passersby, a press release from festival organizers said.
The "ambulatory resto-bar" or jeepney-restobar of the Saging Resto Bar Kiosk has become an attraction for the MassKara Festival and is one of the most visited kiosks at the plaza.
The kiosk is likened to a "resto in the middle of the jungle" by most of its patrons who came to experience wining, dining and partying at the kubo type resto-bar that is mounted on the top of a passenger-jeepney.
It is an exclusive-type of kiosk which can accommodate almost 24 persons, with four mini-tables and a last supper table that is best for small gatherings. The installation was done with the help of architect Lucillus Buyco, the press release added.*

Monico MassKara Golf Invitational that kicks off today at the Marapara Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City.
The weekend event, which runs until Sunday, Oct. 14, offers bigger hole-in-one prizes this year with Mitsubishi Motors giving away a brand new Mitsubishi Fuzion GLX, Puentevella, who will tee-off at 10 a.m. today, said in a press release.

The invitational, held as a highlight of Bacolod's Charter Day celebration and the annual MassKara Festival, has also attracted the participation of local golfers, corporate executives and Negros and national government dignitaries.
Benefiting from the tournament, with Puentevella as major presentor, are the Rotary Club of Bacolod South's Academic Excellence Award project, which recognizes outstanding Bacolod City students; the Community Health Project for Children and the ROTOPLAST Medical Mission, among others, the press release said
. Also supporting the 36-hole weekend hostilities are Nestle Phils., Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp., Hanjin, Manila North Tollways Corp., Philippine Long Distance and Telephone Co., Smart Communications, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office, CATS Motors, Friends of Monico, K-Line, the Department of Transportation and Communications and PGA Motors.

With regards to the old Bacolod airport conversion, I would want to see it as a SEZ(special economic zone) same like MEPZA in Mactan,Cebu. Companies setting up their businesses in a SEZ are labor intensive and that proves to be advantageous to Bacolod. Again, more business mean more jobs.

Cojuangcos sell mall to Gokongwei firm
September 11, 2007
Business World
Gokongwei-led Robinsons Land Corp. has acquired the Cojuangco family’s Plaza Luisita Center in Tarlac City, Robinsons Land President and Chief Operating Officer Frederick D. Go told BusinessWorld.
The deal was signed by former president Corazon C. Aquino, Luisita Realty Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer Josephine C. Reyes, Luisita Realty Chairman Don Pedro Cojuangco, Mr. Go, and Robinsons Land Vice-Chairman and Deputy Chief Executive Lance Y. Gokongwei.
"It will be a redeveloped mall and become part of our chain of malls," Mr. Go said.
He declined to disclose the purchase price and how much the company will spend to redevelop the Plaza Luisita mall.
BusinessWorld tried to reach the Cojuangcos for comment but they were not available as of press time.
The Plaza Luisita Center is a two-storey business and shopping complex. The first shopping complex in central Luzon, it has a multi- cinema complex, boutiques, fast food outlets, grocery stores, an appliance store, and other shops.
Robinsons Land said last month it would jointly develop with Federal Land, Inc., the property arm of the George S.K. Ty-led Metrobank group, a two-hectare prime property on EDSA corner Pioneer Street in Mandaluyong into a residential condominium complex.
The Links, which will be composed of five towers, is expected to churn P15 billion in sales.
Federal Land President Alfred V. Ty said the Tys’s property is right next to Robinsons Land’s Cybergate building.
"It is very natural to work as partners rather than develop it separately. We are both excited about this new venture," he said.
The commercial centers division of Robinsons Land accounted for 41% or P2.46 billion of the company’s gross revenues for the three quarters starting October 2006 to June 2007.
The increase in revenues was principally due to rental escalations and strong rental income from almost all Robinsons malls, particularly Robinsons Place Cainta, Robinsons Place Pioneer, Robinsons Metro Bacolod, Robinsons Place Lipa and the Galleria Mall in Ortigas Center.
Robinsons Land reported a nearly 50% increase in net income during the three quarters, at P1.82 billion from P1.23 billion.
Gross revenues for the nine-month period rose 23.4% to P5.96 billion from P4.83 billion.
The Robinsons Land group is 60.01% owned by JG Summit Holdings, Inc., one of the country’s largest conglomerates with interests in branded consumer foods, agro-industrial and commodity food products, telecommunications, petrochemicals, air transportation and financial services.
On Monday, Robinsons Land shares closed 2.78% weaker at P17.50. — Ruby Anne M. Rubio/BusinessWorld

Sterling Bank expansion to double branch network
By Ted P. Torres
Sunday, October 14, 2007
Sterling Bank of Asia is planning to more than double its nationwide branch network to 15 by the first quarter of 2008, the bank’s top executive said.
“We will open nine more branches in key cities like Cebu, Davao, Iloilo and Bacolod as well as two or three more in Metro Manila, before the end of the year or by the start of 2008,” Lamberto R. Villena, Sterling Bank president, said in an interview.
It presently operates six branches located in Greenhills, Valenzuela, Ayala and three in Binondo.
Villena said they have already scouted a few other bank branches and branch sites, adding that they are prepared to acquire these branches if necessary.
He said Sterling Bank wants to double the number of its branches by the end of 2008, if the authorities will allow them.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has lifted the branch moratorium last year. However, it has placed the major cities, including Metro Manila, on a “restricted list.” For areas not covered by the list, banks can apply for five licences at a time.
When approved, the branches must be opened within a six- month period from the date of approval.
Villena said the bank’s main target market is the middle market, the small and medium enterprises and the retail market.
It will soon expand to the remittance market as one of its sister companies specializes in the business.
He said 2007 is the year they start setting the infrastructure, including the technology, for future growth.
Since its banking license was approved in February this year, it has acquired the remaining 14 branches of BPI Family Savings Bank. These branches were actually branches of FEB (Far East Bank) Savings Bank which have remained inactive after the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) acquired Far East Bank and Trust Co. (FEBTC).
Recently, it increased its capital to P1 billion or several times over the minimum required capital of P325 million for thrift banks. Villena said the additional capital infusion will fund the bank’s extensive expansion program.
Sterling Bank is the newest thrift bank in the country. It is owned by JTKC Equities Inc., Star Equities and Surewell Equities Inc.
JTKC and Star Equities have investments in various companies which are involved in a wide range of industries from logistics to finance, real estate, manufacturing, and hotel and resort properties.

Robinson's Place Bacolod, which introduced Negrenses to a one-stop-shop concept of malling, celebrated its 10th anniversary recently through a party held at its fountain area. Close to two hundred guests attended.
Jetting in from Manila were Robinsons Land Corporation's bigwigs Nilo Mapa and Graham Coates. An impressive video presentation for their expansion plans for the Bacolod mall was held, followed by cocktails

Your Own MassKara
Paint your own mask.
This is the hands-on experience for MassKara Festival followers offered by the Pinta MassKara program of the Art Association of Bacolod at the Event Center of SM City Bacolod.
AAB President Nune Alvarado said the program is a revival of the mask-making workshop initiated by the association in the early years of the festival.
At Pinta Masskara, art lovers are provided raw masks which they paint themselves. The program was stated Oct. 8 and ends today.
Also featured at the SM Event Center are exhibits of masks painted by AAB artists which are for sale.
For a minimal fee, one gets to further explore his or her creative skills by painting or creating a mask of his or her own, said Alvarado, who added that the AAB hopes to bring the workshop to the barangay level next year to further create a sense of festival belongingness among purok people.
The mask-making and painting activity is among the dozens of activities calendared for the MassKara Festival which ends on next Sunday.

The future smiles on the city of smiles From sugarcane to BPOs—investment opportunities abound in Bacolod
By Karen B. Bitagun http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc255/erjaplacement/geo1.jpg
The half a million residents of Bacolod City, the “City of Smiles” of the Philippines, have many reasons to feel good about their city. Bacolod has already been inducted into the “Clean and Green Hall of Fame” after being cited by the national government as the country’s cleanest and greenest highly urbanized city in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2006, it was named the most child-friendly city in Western Visayas, and its local government was recognized for being the most business-friendly in the Visayas. The year before, Bacolod was chosen as the most competitive city in the midsize category by the Asian Institute of Management, while the city government was awarded the Apolinario Mabini Award for the “Local Government Unit of the Year” by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled because of its disabled-friendly services and projects. The city has also been hailed as one of the most livable cities in the country, boasting of a low crime incidence rate and a very high crime solution rate of 97%.
regional gateway
The city’s name comes from the Ilonggo word bakolod, which means “stone hill.” Located in the northwest of the Visayan province of Negros Occidental on the island of Negros, Bacolod City is accessible from Manila by air and water transportation. By air, it is just 55 minutes away from Manila. The airport is a mere 4 kilometers from the city proper, but before the end of the year it will be relocated to a new and bigger facility in Silay City, 24 kilometers north of Bacolod. By sea, Bacolod is an 18-hour boat ride from Manila and can be reached through the seaports in Banago, the Reclamation Area, and Pulupandan.
Bacolod, which covers an area of 161.45 square kilometers, is the gateway to the 12 component cities and 19 towns of Negros Occidental and to the neighboring province of Negros Oriental. It is bound on the north by Talisay City, on the east by the municipality of Murcia, on the south by Bago City, and on the west by the Guimaras Strait. Due to its strategic location, Bacolod has become the commercial, trade and industrial, agricultural, and even ICT hub of the region.
economic activity
Bacolod is alive with economic activity. Trade between the city and other Visayan towns and cities in the provinces of Negros Oriental, Iloilo, Bohol, and Cebu is thriving. Goods from Bacolod reach Camiguin Island, Cagayan de Oro, Dapitan, Dipolog, Surigao, and Zamboanga in Mindanao. Beyond domestic trade, products from Bacolod and the rest of the province are also transported to Manila and on to overseas markets.
Sugar is still the lifeblood of the province, which supplies more than half of the country’s sugar needs. In Bacolod, as of 2003, 7,216 hectares of the city’s 8,560 hectares of agricultural land were still planted to sugarcane. Meanwhile, 915 hectares were devoted to rice, 120 to assorted vegetables, 100 to coconut, 43 to banana, and 34 to corn.
The fresh and processed export products that Bacolod is most famous for include refined sugar, muscovado sugar, fresh green bananas, frozen black tiger prawns, squid and cuttlefish, pasteurized crabmeat, and canned sardines and milkfish. It has also been very successful in promoting its exports of furniture, home furnishings, and holiday decor made from wood, shell, and other indigenous materials, as well as garments.
business opportunities
For investors looking for areas of growth in the city, the emerging investment opportunities are in power generation, cutflowers and ornamentals, travel and support services, sports and ecotourism, mass housing, and ICT. The business process outsourcing industry, especially the call center sector, has already discovered the enormous potential of Bacolod.
With its six universities and colleges, the city produces about 5,000 graduates every year to fill and replenish the pool of potential agents. This—coupled with the cheap cost of living, stable infrastructure, and the local government’s continued efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the city—has drawn four call center firms into setting up shop here since the beginning of 2005. Focus Communications, IO Asia, Teletech, and Teleperformance all have operations in Bacolod, with the last being the largest with more than 500 seats. Convergys Philippines and other contact centers have expressed plans to set up in Bacolod as well. The city already has four Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited IT parks in anticipation of the requirements of the booming BPO industry.
Thus, as Bacolod City strives to keep its position as a one of the country’s leading economic centers down south, expect it not only to draw on its traditional agricultural products and staple industries, but also to ride on promising investment prospects grounded on the dynamic and competitive skills of the smiling people of the city.

Chicken inasal — a must-try http://i213.photobucket.com/albums/cc255/erjaplacement/geo9.jpg
A piaya factory
The Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club
The San Sebastian Cathedral was built in 1876
Bacolod had me charmed the moment I landed in the city. Throughout my recent visit there, I was greeted by warm and friendly locals. Combine the Bacolodnons’ or Bacoleños’ hospitality and gracious ways with their melodious Ilonggo dialect—it would be difficult not to fall under the city’s spell.
Ilonggos have always taken pride in the fact that they know how to eat well. A visit to one of the many alfresco dining places in Bacolod serving Ilonggo cuisine will bear this out. Try the pancit molo, batchoy, binakol, puto manapla, lumpiang ubod, the fresh grilled seafood, and of course, the chicken inasal. Many local restaurants serve inasal, but any of the eateries in Manokan Country in the Reclamation Area is recommended. The distinctly flavored inasal is best eaten with the fiery sinamak vinegar using your bare hands. Other well-known Bacolod delicacies are the piaya, barquillos, napoleones, pinasugbo, mango tarts, and broas.
After partaking of all those Ilonggo dishes, you can walk off all the calories by going on a tour of the city’s tourist attractions. No tour of the city is complete without swinging by the Bacolod City Hall and the Fountain of Justice in front of it. Other government offices and public places in the city that have also become popular tourist spots are the Negros Occidental Provincial Capitol Building and Lagoon, and the Bacolod Plaza Bandstand and Gazebo, among others.
If you are looking for more cultural stopovers, the Negros Museum will provide you with a deeper understanding of the history and culture of Negros Occidental and its people. The San Sebastian Cathedral and its bells, built in 1876, are also a must-see. At the Barangay Sang Virgen Chapel at the Sta. Clara Subdivision, there is a large mural mosaic of the Virgin Mary made of 95,000 pieces of seashells.
For a little recreation, you can continue to hone your golf game at the 18-hole Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club while taking in the impressive sight of Mounts Marapara and Patag. The best place to shop for gifts and souvenirs is at the Association of Negros Producers Showroom, a one-stop shop of innovative and stylish products designed and manufactured in Negros, including furniture and furnishings, ceramics and pottery, baskets, candles, ladies’ and children’s garments, fashion accessories, souvenir t-shirts, and the native delicacies.
If you are not bothered by crowds, you might want to time your visit to Bacolod on the third weekend of October when the annual MassKara Festival is held. One of the highlights of the festival is the street dance competition, where participants wearing colorful and elaborate smiling masks and costumes dance to rhythmic beats and marching bands. During the festival weekend, there may be a beauty pageant, carnival, food festival, sports event, musical concert, trade fair, or garden show going on at any one time. If there is one event that captures the charm and spirit of the people and all that Bacolod has to offer, it is the MassKara Festival.

^^ Still something missing on the article about Bacolod and Negros Occidental as being known for the quality breeding of Gamefowls or the Manok Pansabong. Many people from all over the country when they your from Bacolod they won't forget mentioning "Manok Pansabong" aside from the chiken inasal, all of this originally came from Bacolod. We have plenty of breeding farms for this gamefowls and big arenas for "Sabong".Bacolod have been hosting International Stag Derby for the past years. Many Bacolodnon's has passion for cockfighting.
Most of airlines cargoes like PAL and Cebu Pacific and Air Philipines are mostly filled with cage boxes of gamefowls and even Shipping Lines. It's a very rare flight for this airlines without this cage boxes. We are known for the good quality breeded gamefowls and as for this reason, many Sabongero's from all over the country come to buy gamefowls in Bacolod.

Probably it does helps this animals for stress on flight. Each of those cartoon cage boxes can fill two gamefowls and some has a tagged prize of more than P5,000.00 each while some Stag Derby Events can reach millions on prizes like in this coming Masskara Festival.
I remember before when a PAL reperesentative was interviewed,he said that they want to use bigger Airbus Plane because cargoes cannot accomodate the volume sometimes using the existing smaller Airbus service..

'America' to perform in Bacolod
Legendary band America will hold the first stop of their four-city tour of the Philippines in Bacolod City on December 1, a press release from event organizers said.
With their first major label studio album in over 20 years called "Here & Now" released in January this year, America, originally composed of Gerry Beckley, Dewey Bunnell, and Dan Peek (who later left the band), will also perform in Cebu (December 2), Cagayan de Oro (December 3), and Manila, as they set to hold shows across Asia.
The group will then move on to more gigs in Singapore, India, and New Zealand before returning to the United States. America's 1972 hit song "A Horse with No Name," galloped to the top of the United States charts. Ironically, the band was composed by a trio of young Americans then living in the United Kingdom, the press release said.
Beckley, Bunnell, and Peek were sons of American Air Force servicemen who were married to British women. The trio grew up in military stations away from the mother country and studied high school in London. When they came together to form a band, influenced by the music of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young as well as The Beatles, they called themselves America, not out of patriotic fervor, but because they listened to the songs from an Americana jukebox.
America's first album titled "America". which also included "I Need You (originally intended as the band's first single)", introduced the band to America (the country) and, consequently, to the world.
Soon after, its second album, "Homecoming," was released in November 1972. The group struck gold yet again with the Top Ten hit "Ventura Highway," penned by Bunnell and best remembered for a unique acoustic guitar riff. Follow-up singles, including Peek's "Don't Cross the River" and Beckley's "Only In Your Heart", were somewhat less successful, but not enough to deny the group a Grammy Award for Best New Artist of 1972.
The next few years saw America riding the crest of popularity with such hits as Sand Man, Tin Man, Lonely People, Sister Golden Hair, Daisy Jane and All My Life.
Beckley and Bunnell decided to soldier on as America. They spent the latter half of the 1980s focusing on live shows, which they performed well over 100 times a year around the world
America was recently inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame and performed live on NBC's The Today Show and Late Night with David Lettermen. These performances can still be viewed over the internet on YouTube, the press release added.*

I miss the times when siakol and greyhounds went here... i was 14 years old during siakol concert and it was raining hard there was mud all over the place it was so crowded u that u can barely breath. Then they started playing hardcore stuff everyone went in berserk mode jumping on top each other, body slaming, punching and kicking banging their heads, throwing bottles and anything they can grab others are getting trampled in the mud. It was the first mosh pit grind concert in bacolod i think.. i went home stained with mud and a few bruises. I miss those good ol days now most people are getting soft and too mainstream... they think yeng constantino is rock and they use the horns signs which a sign of heavy metal invented by Ronnie james dio of blacksabbath... lol wtf!!! rock in its true form is about heavy hard music, rebllion, wildness, unpredictability and chaos. Now these weaklings think these pop culture celebs they see on TV is like the shyt it's rock \m/ i just laugh at it... hayy naku sad.

Bacolodnon and Negrense excelled in Sports
Piccio trails by 2 shots
Bacoleña Mia Piccio shot an even par 72 yesterday to gain a tie of second place in the opening round of the FCWT Junior Golf Tour in the World Woods Golf Club in Florida.
Piccio had three birdies and three bogeys with nines of 35 and 37 to share second place with compatriot Cyna Rodriguez.
Sally Watson of Scotland shot a 70 for the solo lead.
Piccio birdied the third, sixth and 12th holes but was pegged back by bogeys in the ninth, 14th and 17th. The golf standout from Bacolod finished second in the Malaysia Amateurs last month.
Martina completes Asian U-14 double
BY CEDELF TUPAS
Martina Guba endured long and tough matches en route to two titles in the Agra Cup-Asian Under-14 title because she added gym workouts and more kilometers in road runs to her training regimen on the court, her father-coach Socrates said yesterday.
Shrugging off blisters, Martina, the 14-year-old tennis wonder from La Carlota City dug deep in her resolve to crush Sally Mae Siso, 6-1, 7-5, in a two-hour championship clash at the Rizal Tennis Center in Manila Saturday. The win gave Guba a ticket to the Nov. 12-18 Bahrain leg of the circuit organized by the Asian Tennis Federation.
"Her gym work really paid off. We are really working on her stamina. We know it's different when you are up against international players," Socrates said.
The older Guba cited her daughter's , 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Asian No. 1 Adelle Chia Boey of Malaysia in the quarterfinals as the true test of Martina's physical conditioning.
When the match comes to three sets, that's when conditioning becomes a very crucial factor, Socrates said, adding that her daughter works out in the gym after practicing on the court.
"The wins mean a lot to her confidence," the older Guba, who has been fielding Martina in 16-Under, 18-Under and open tournaments to raise her competitiveness, said.
In preparation for the 9 a.m. finals Saturday, Martina said she went to court earlier than usual to get her rhythm. The result was a swift 6-1 victory, before blisters almost forced her to squander the golden chance of winning the title.
"The blisters hurt so bad I wanted the second set to end as quick as possible," Martina told the DAILY STAR in a telephone interview.
But Siso managed to keep the rallies long, before Guba finally stamped her class over her friend and doubles partner, whom she won the girls' doubles crown with late Friday.
Socrates plans to field Martina in the PCA Open next month.
The father-coach said he hopes the events will help Martina in achieving her cherished dream of competing for the country in the Southeast Asian Games and the Asian Games.
Guba is entered in the mixed doubles and women's doubles event of the MassKara tennis tournament at the Montevista Tennis Courts today.

Iloilo’s Oktoberfest fails to dampen Masskara
Phil. Star, THE SOUTHERN BEAT By Rolly Espina
Tuesday, October 16, 2007
It may not have been deliberately intended to undercut the lure of the Masskara Festival. But Iloilo City’s Oktoberfest may have lured Ilonggos to stay home, however, the Masskara Festival of Bacolod still attracted the attention of Panay residents, including Iloilo City.
Actually, it was just a low-key affair only every Friday at the ground floor of the Iloilo City Inn, in front of the St. Vicente Ferrer Seminary in Jaro district.
The offer – for every authentic German cuisine, it costs only P350 plus a free glass of iced tea. It tries to replicate locally the Oktoberfest of Germany.
Still, the Masskara Festival started to gather momentum over the weekend with the local dailies and radio stations bombarding Bacolodnon with drumbeat about bargain sales, salacious food and the dishes offered by restaurants and the performance of various singers and bands hailed as the best in delighting customers.
In short, it is a consumerist binge for Bacolodnons with street dancing and a lot of other interesting offerings for Masskara fans.
For example, Gaisano published a one-page supplement in a local daily outlining its scheduled presentations starting with “Lastikman” from Oct. 19 to Shamrock and Pupil on Oct. 20, and RJ Jimenez Band on the 21st. Then there is the Halloween trick or treat on Oct. 28 at the Atrium area at the basement.
Robinsons announced its midnight sale and its three-day October super sale starting Oct. 19. Even PO’s Marketing announced its Sparkling 45 raffle promo starting today.
SM started on Oct. 12 its Garden Show at the South Transport Terminal. The show sponsored by the Negros Occidental Garden Club will last until the 21st. Over at the Northwing Lobby, starting today there will be the Aton Ini Masskara Trade Fair, and at the Southwing Hall way, Ma Wheels Accessories Sale. On Oct. 19 will be the Fashion Forward, then Kapuso Mall Show with Dennis Trillo, Pauleen Luna and Paolo Ballesteros. This will be capped on Oct. 21, with the Kapuso Mall Show featuring Marimar with Marian Rivera and Dingdong Dantes.
Of course, there will be the Saturday Street Party along Rizal Street with Calla Lilly.
The focus on the festivities sort of brushed under the Our Lady of the Holy Rosary celebration of the Alangilan Parish on Oct. 7 with no less than Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra as the principal guest. Fr. Farley Santillan, however, made sure that the affair was not overlooked with a full page ad in the Visayan Daily STAR.
In short, everything revolves around Masskara. And there’s no earthshaking event that could distract Negrenses from enjoying themselves and doing away with their troubles as this festival was created primarily for them to forget their woes and drown them in gaiety and… well, drinks.

The 1st Electric MassKara was launched last night at Lacson Street, Bacolod City, in front of the PNB Building. This is the fist time that the building and its grounds have been lighted up in October. On Oct. 19, aside from the Charter Day parade, a 15-minute fireworks display will also be held along the MassKara party strip at Lacson Street in the evening. Rene Hinojales will lead the street dancing at Lacson Street. A stage will be set up in front of the PNB to entertain the crowd, and delicious and very yummy food at affordable prices will be sold.

Friday will be the Parade of Festivals of WVTA, that would be November 16 (please correct me if I'm wrong) as from what I've heard from Ben Jimena of City Tourism Office of Iloilo. I'll be confirming that with the DOT-6. Para preparar na ko nga daan. :D
Unfortunately, I can't be at Masskara due to fulfiling my obligations in Cebu yet I might be there for WVTA.

yes, shopping is a china town... but what does shopping means in chinese.?. kay daw chinese man gid matian ang shoping,,, more like xia ping.. :lol:any idea what it means why it is called shopping?
shopping comes from the root word, "shop" which i think is english. not sure though about the etymology of that english word itself whether it's chinese. i used to pass that area (chinatown) on my way to the lagoon to jog early in the saturday/sunday mornings:)

City's tourism belt vision for Lacson Street kicks off
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia's vision of turning Lacson Street into a tourism belt for Bacolod City kicked off last night at the launching of the first Electric MassKara set on Oct 19 and 20 at the MassKara Strip.
The rites held 7 p.m. last night at the flagpole area of the Philippine National Bank at Lacson Street was followed by a fireworks display. Festival director Eli Francis Tajanlangit yesterday said the Electric MassKara, which was visualized by the Mayor, will showcase the best of the arts in Bacolod City.
The MassKara Strip covers Lacson Street from 5th Street to North Drive, where many food establishments are located.
Lacson Street, where many establishments are sprouting, has the potential of becoming another tourist attraction for the city, Leonardia said. "I feel that this may be a humble start but surely this is going to metamorphose into something big," he said.
Leonardia recalled that when he came back as City Mayor in 2004 he also started something new which was the Countdown to the Charter Day that has become successful. Whoever is mayor should continue it because it has already become a tradition, he added.
"The holding of the Electric MassKara will not be successful if it will not be supported by our commercial establishments," Leonardia said. When we met with the representatives of the different establishments along Lacson Street we got a very encouraging response, he said. Leonardia said the challenge to make Lacson Street a tourist attraction is now in our hands.
Although they had a simple opening last night, Leonardia said he is looking forward to a complete transformation of Lacson Street in the evening of Charter Day on Friday. Tajanlangit said with the Countdown street party along Araneta Street, this will be the very first time in Bacolod when the Charter Day celebration will begin and end with giant street parties and fireworks.
The Electric MassKara dance parade which begins at 8 p.m., on Oct. 19 will feature an electric float designed by artist Bamboo Tonogbanua, the "blinkers" dancers of Rene Hinojales, the dance group of Georgette Sanchez and the Brgy. 23 MassKara dance group, which was last year's streetdance barangay category champion, he said. They have also invited La Castellana's Bayles de Luces dancers, Tajanlangit said.
Tattoo tents and face-painting stations will be set up along the MassKara strip Friday and Saturday evening to add to the MassKara revelry, he said. We encourage face-painting for those who find wearing masks an inconvenience, he said.
He said the Electric Masskara will be directed by Manny Montelibano and his production support group. Tajanlangit said there will be two sets of fireworks, at 9 p.m. to be sponsored by Chowking and at midnight, sponsored by Pepsi Cola.
On Saturday, the 4th MassKara Fantasy Costume competition will be held at the strip and will be followed by fireworks display, he said. "We hope that with all these, the vision of a tourist strip in Lacson Street will get going although we can expect an exciting and electrifying MassKara," he added.
Traffic will be closed starting 2 p.m. on Oct. 19 and Oct. 20 and
establishments are encouraged to set up umbrella tables outside their areas where people can dine.
Also present at the launching rites last night were Board Member Patrick Lacson, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Greg Gasataya, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos and Celia Flor.*CGS

Ascalon designs MassKara trophies (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/October/17/people.htm)
The trophies for this year's MassKara streetdancing competitions were painted by Bacolod artist Dennis Ascalon, a press release from festival organizers said.
Ascalon, who has represented the Philippines in three exhibitions abroad and who has works among international collectors and museums, painted on wood structures similar to last year's trophies. Charlie Co designed the trophies for the 2006 MassKara street dancing.
We hope that it will become a tradition for a Bacolod artist to work on the street dancing trophies every year, festival director Eli F.J.Tajanlangit said. This way, we not only transform the trophies into valuable pieces of art but also reemphasize the central role of artists in the MassKara, he added. The basic wood structure which was designed by Co last year symbolized a boat and a rising sun to tell the story of MassKara: how Bacolod rose from tragedy to triumph.
This year, the same structure was painted yellow, green and brown by Ascalon to symbolize the sun rising in the eastern mountains. "It is a new day for Bacolod," was how Ascalon explained his work. "I wanted to capture that brand-new-day-optimism we have here in Bacolod now," he added.
Ascalon is a founding member of the Black Artists in Asia which began the long-running Visayan Visual Arts Conference and Exhibition. He is a former executive council member for visual arts of the National Commission for Culture and Arts. He has had 15 one-man and 16 group shows since 1986, the press release added.*

Gerry Grey ina? hmmmm its not the usual gerry grey that im used to. gerry's been tapped by the silver masskara foundation to create the music for 2000, 2004-2006. this years music is somewhat similar sa 2006 pero ang ang beat nya daw 2000.
that yuhum yuhum 2000, still tops my favorite locally produced music. that was performed by the group kulay pikata.
btw, ma cover ang Sky cable? palihog da bi pamangkot sa bacolod kung tag pila ang DVD kung mabakal sa ila sang masskara coverage. mapabakal ako dira. i need the video for comparison.. kay maintra sa april ang masskara, bonok bonok maradjaw karadjaw, kadayawan sinulog kag dinagyang sa aliwan. its going to be the biggest aliwan, if ever.

Tourists, visitors safe during Bacolod MassKara festival
BACOLOD CITY, Oct 16 (PNA)--Tourists and visitors joining the MassKara Festival in Bacolod are secure and safe here, PNP director Sr. Supt. Ronilo Quebrar said Monday.
Quebrar, said the city remains peaceful despite the MassKara revelries, concerts and other activities since October 1 and they are doubling security measures as the festival tempo rises.
Highlights of the festival will be from October 18 to 21 during which the famous Masskara streetdancing competitions, and civil-military parades will be held.
Quebrar said the PNP has doubled security measures to ensure that the Masskara Festival celebration will remain peaceful not only on the two festival sites but throughout the city.
"We are further intensifying police visibility and mobile patrols in areas where revelers mostly converge, particularly at the city’s public plaza and the reclamation area, and in other areas at downtown and in those far from the festivities," Quebrar said.

Substantive events in Iloilo and elsewhere
THE SOUTHERN BEAT By Rolly Espina
Thursday, October 18, 2007
Spectacular representations can prove distracting. Journalists are often tempted to focus on these rather on more essential and substantive developments that could change a community’s history.
The same thing happened to me this week. I found myself charmed by the series of impressive presentations of the Masskara Festival that have been mounted in Bacolod and have infected Bacolodnons and a lot of guests.
In the long run, the questions are asked – what are these events for? How will they benefit the city and its residents? What do they mean to their lives?
Well, anyway, I finally freed myself from this single-minded attraction and decided to follow up more important developments elsewhere, particularly in Iloilo City and the province where more important and momentous events were happening – not just diversions from the substance to the apparent.

I think meg, R. Espina is against the retention of the old Bacolod airport. Thats why he's giving a "signal" to the heads of the city to be more "substantive" and not just pure revelry. Yes, its only but something to hail about the Masskara festivities. But what he's after is; WHATS NEXT??? The people of Bacolod want more economic activities to the city in terms of jobs generation. And not just all "pa-pogi points".

(MassKara Queen 2007 Rosario Anne Sales flanked by first runner-up Kristine Alonso (right) and second runner-up Nicole Marie Dimailig. from www.visayandailystar.com )
She just stood there in her gold-embroidered chiffon evening gown and tried to hold back her emotions. Then, as she took her first steps as the 2007 MassKara Queen and as the audience chanted her name, tears started streaming down her face.
It was her moment and Rosario Anne Sales savored it with unwavering elegance and confidence, which she radiated all throughout the pageant until the feathered silver crown was put on her head.
"I'm very happy," Sales said, clutching the bouquet of red and white roses as she posed for photographers at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum last night.
The 20-year-old Nursing major at USLS punctuated the last phase of the pageant with a statement that made part of the crowd stand up and applaud after falling silent for a full minute to hear her every word in the fully packed coliseum, which seats around 8,000.
And she also got the nod of the five judges that included acclaimed filmmaker Maurice "Peque" Gallaga, Tourism Regional Director Edwin Trompeta, interior designer Raymund Fuentes, dancer Georgette Sanchez and beauty queen Carmela Arcolas-Gamboa during the three-hour show.
Asked what Bacolod icon she would choose to represent the province's capital, Sales said, "I will choose the San Sebastian Cathedral, the icon of faith. Because with it I could think that we are all the same. There is no discrimination between rich and poor, if you're normal or abnormal. We are all accepted and we will be united as one Bacolod."
Sales took home P100,000 in cash and a P200,000 insurance policy aside from the Best in Swimsuit, Globe Texters' Choice, Miss Negros Navigation and Miss Samsung special awards.
Candidate number 1 Kristine Alonso was declared first runner up while finalist number 7 Nicole Marie Dimailig, who was also judged as Best in Talent, won second runner-up.*PP

Mayor seeks P1B
budget for Bacolod
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he submitted his proposed 2008 annual budget for the city amounting to P1 billion or an increase of 32 percent compared to last year's budget, to the Sangguniang Panlungsod Tuesday.
We have finally reached the P1 billion mark, we are increasing our budget from P755 million last year to more than a billion in 2008, Leonardia said. This means an increase of 32 percent which has never happened in the history of Bacolod, he said. What is very significant is that for the first time the city has a budget that is more of "local income" than the Internal Revenue Allotment, he said.
The IRA now represents only 48 percent of the budget, which in the previous years would average about 60 percent, Leonardia added.
"I think this means a very healthy financial condition of the city and I believe that the local income is an indicator of our efficiency in collecting our local taxes," Leonardia said. He thanked the taxpayers for their support and cooperation.
Leonardia said he believes that the substantial and dramatic increase in the local income is also a show of confidence on the part of the taxpayers in the present administration.
"We hope to see that we will continue to be in partnership as we try to deliver basic services and as we direct Bacolod towards greater heights," he said, adding its all because they want to make Bacolod City a better place to live in.
Leonardia said among the highlights of the annual budget will be their major projects for 2008. He said they will be allocating P64.5 million for roads and bridges, P22 million for landbanking/land improvement, P10 million for building and other infrastructure projects and P 5 million for artesian wells.
Record shows that Bacolod is gradually weaning its dependency from the IRA by 58 percent in 2005, 60 percent in 2006 and 2007, and 48 percent in 2008.
Meanwhile, Leonardia said that in Region VI the two big cities are Bacolod and Iloilo and that in the 1960's and 1970's Bacolod always had a bigger budget than Iloilo. However, sometime in 2002, Iloilo overtook Bacolod and its budget became bigger since then, he said.
This happened during the term of Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas, he added.
"I congratulated (Mayor) Treñas and reminded him that I was not the mayor when Iloilo overtook Bacolod," Leonardia said. Last year Iloilo submitted a budget of P1 billion but it included the P350 million loan that they were preparing for their new city hall, he said.
Bacolod's P1 billion budget does not include the P394 million expected to come from the loan proceeds to finance the new government center, Leonardia said. He clarified that they are not competing with Iloilo but using the figures as a reference.
"With the increase in the annual budget of Bacolod for 2008, we feel that we are now catching up with Iloilo," Leonardia said.*CGS

Gloria okays shorter
road to new airport
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has given the go-signal for the construction of a shorter service road from Bacolod City leading to the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of international standards in Barangay Bagtic, Silay City, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella said yesterday.
The 10.1 kilometer-stretch leading to the new airport starts from La Herencia in the Barangay Bata portion of the Bacolod Circumferential Road leading all the way to Bagtic, the solon said in a press statement. Once completed, it would take a little over 10 minutes to travel to and from the new Silay airport compared to the 45-minute trip via the present service road along McKinley Street, said Puentevella, chairman of the House Committee on Transportation.
The solon expressed confidence that the feasibility study being conducted by a Korean group on the La Herencia-Bagtic road will be completed late this year or early next year. Once finalized and approved by NEDA, construction will start within the first quarter of 2008, he said.
Meanwhile, contractors are working full-blast on the McKinley section to take advantage of the dry weather, he said.
They hope to hasten work on the bad portions of the service road in time for the opening of the over P4-billion new airport facilities before the year ends, Puentevella said.
The Air Transport Office, the congressman revealed, will conduct another around of test flights shortly to check on the efficiency of navigational facilities at the New Bacolod-Silay Airport.
Last month, the ATO commissioned test flights from New Zealand that landed at the new airport, results of which had been satisfactory. But minor concerns have to be addressed that's why, there is a scheduled second round of test flights soon, the solon said.*

MassKara Trade Fair opens at SM City
ATON INI! MassKara Trade Fair organized by the Multi-sectoral Alliance for Development (MUAD) - Negros in partnership with Peace and Equity Foundation (PEF) Inc. kicked off Wednesday at the Northwing lobby of SM City Bacolod and will run until October 21, 2007.
The ribbon cutting that officially opened the trade fair was led by Dr. Billy Tusalem, president of MUAD-Negros, Mr. Reynic Alo, Executive Director of MUAD-Negros, Mr. Ric Torres, Associate Director of PEF and Guest Speaker Mr. Roberto Montelibano, President of Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
A MassKara Festival Regional Trade Fair themed "Lokal nga Negosyo Itib-ong, Kauswagan Ipadayon," it is a tribute to community solidarity expressed through a wide array of local products and services. It emphasizes the local communities' ingenuity and entrepreneurial spirit that are among the key ingredients to the development of the country.
One of the highlights of the trade fair is the display of organic products of MUAD-Negros' farmer-beneficiaries and partners. This is also inline with the thrust of the Local Governments of Bacolod City and Negros Occidental to develop the organic product industry as a strategy to address poverty in the island.
It aims to help small farmers increase their productivity and income in a sustainable manner and, at the same time, giving the urban population access to clean and healthy food.
This week-long activity is the second year's promotional activity implemented jointly by MUAD-Negros and PEF giving the local producers ample opportunity to showcase their development initiatives and discuss common concerns in a wider arena. (PR)

Capitol creates water and sanitation council
THE Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has created the Provincial Water and Sanitation Development Council (PSWDC).
The creation of PWSDC was based on order of Governor Joseph Marañon through an executive order.
Acting Governor Isidro Zayco said Wednesday the executive order cited the Local Government Code of 1991 that provides full autonomy to local government units to undertake development programs and projects for the community.
It is also in consonance with the Philippine Clean Air Act of 2004 that implicates the streamline processes and procedures in the prevention, control and abatement of pollution of the country's water resources and to promote environmental strategies, use of appropriate economic instruments and of control mechanisms for the protection of water resources.
As to this PWSDC, Zayco said it was created to ensure a well coordinated and systematic planning and implementation of water supply and sanitation programs and projects consistent with the framework of the Integrated Water Resource Management System (IWRMS) in Negros Occidental. PWSDC will be composed of the governor as chairman, vice-governor as vice chairman, and the Provincial Environment Management Officer as action officer.
Other members include the Provincial Planning and Development Coordinator, Provincial Engineer, Provincial Health Officer, Provincial Agriculturist, District Engineers of three Engineering Districts in the Province, Provincial Director of Interior and Local Government, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer, Philippine National Oil Company-Energy Development Corporation (PNOC-EDC) manager, National Irrigation Authority (NIA) Provincial manager, managers of various local water districts in the province, representatives from the Leagues of Cities and Municipalities, representative of Federation of Community-based Water and Sanitation Organizations and some non-government organizations (NGOs) representatives.

San Sebastian lass crowned MassKara Queen '07
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
INSPIRED by her icon of faith, the San Sebastian Cathedral, 20-year-old beauty, Rosario "Anne" Sales, grabbed this year's coveted MassKara Queen crown.
She bested nine other contestants in a three-hour glittering pageant presented by ABS-CBN-Bacolod at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum.
Sales was also chosen as Miss Globe Texters' Choice, Negros Navigation Princess, Miss Samsung, Best in Swimsuit, Miss PNOC-EDC and Best in Festival Costume.
The two other contestants who towered from among the remaining nine were Kristine 'Tin" Alonso (first runner up) and Nicole Marie "Coy" Dimalig (second runner up).
Sales chose the San Sebastian Cathedral as answer to the final and uniform question, "What icon do you think will best represent the MassKara Festival."
Sales explained her "icon of faith," saying, " There is that deep spiritual longing in her which she considers a strength in these troubled times."
The greatest surprise of the evening was Alonso who received no other award but the equally coveted first runner up slot.
Second runner up Dimalig was the most talented, capturing the Miss Talent award held at Gaisano City some two weeks ago.
The rest of the awards were bequeath to Loiza Marie "Marie" Tonico (Miss Photogenic), Kristine Casandra "KC" Soriano (Best in Evening Gown and Miss Generoso Brandy).
Soriano and Alonso attend schools outside of Bacolod.
Soriano is the 'Iskolar ng Bayan' being schooled in the University of the Philippines in the Visayas of which she has to go home everyday to catch up with the rehearsals.
While Alonso is schooled in the University of San Carlos, Cebu City.
Meanwhile, Concilor Celia Flor said, "Although I have no means of comparing but I find the pageant very supportive of women."
Flor is a pro-women and gender sensitive councilor.
Flor does not find anything in the show that led to the so-called "commodification" of women.
She instead stressed that the entire program led to the development and discovery of women potential.
"In the first place, I believe that all participants formally applied for the contest, therefore, it is their own choice. Then the depiction of women in this contest is very developmental. I saw how these young women's talents and potentials were drawn out to become better persons," Flor said.
She admitted though that she does not watch beauty contest except for official function like last night.

UniGames draw 22 cage squads
BY CEDELF TUPAS
The impending absence of 2006 titlist Emilio Aguinaldo College and losing finalist Adamson University has opened up the title race in the men's basketball tournament of this year's Philippine National University Games that opens Monday at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City.
The scenario leaves West Negros College --- the 2005 University Games champion --- as the best-ranked team from last year, owing to its third place finish.
Only four of the eight quarterfinalists last year, including WNC, are returning with USLS, University of Iloilo and many-time champion St. Francis of Assisi among the 22 teams that will in action.

Bacolod: First Billionaire in WV with 2008 Budget (http://www.negrosdaily.com/oct1807h2)
Bacolod will soon be the first and only city in Western Visayas with a billionaire status, declared Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia after he submitted his proposed 2008 budget to the Sangguniang Panlungsod to the tune of P1 billion.
He said that this is the first time in the history of Bacolod that it will have P1 billion budget for a year. There is an increase of 32% or P245 million from the P755 million budget this year. This is the first time also that the budget will come from the local income and not so much from the Internal Revenue Allotment.
"This is evidenced that the city has a very healthy financial condition. The local income is an indicator of our efficiency in the collection of local taxes. Thanks to the taxpayers for their support and cooperation," he said.
He added that the substantial and dramatic increase in the local income shows the taxpayers confidence in the administration. We assure our people that we will continue to deliver the basic services which will direct the city to greater heights. We will continue to make our city a better place to live," he said.
Leonardia eyes various major projects for next year. These are the roads and bridges for P64.5 million, landbanking/land improvement for P22 million, building and other infrastructure projects for P10 million and P5 million for the artesian wells. Bacolod is gradually weaning its dependence on IRA.
In 2005, its percentage of dependence is 58%; 60% in 2006; 60% in 2007 and 48% next year, Leonardia said. Moreover, the city employees will have their anniversary bonus next year, said City Budget officer Luz Treyes.
She said the bonus is released every five years. But there will be no salary increase next year as the city has already implemented it this year. Mayor Leonardia said whatever is mandated and entitled are surely going to have that in place.
As long as there is legal basis and available funds, he will provide it to the city hall employees. He said his administration has never been remiss in so far as employees welfare is concerned. The city has complied with whatever is entitled to its employees.
Leonardia further said that this is the first time Bacolod overtook Iloilo City in terms of budget. The P394 million loan is not included in the proposed P1 billion 2008 budget. Leonardia said Bacolod is not competing with Iloilo. In fact, there is a proposed twinning of Bacolod and Iloilo City for symbiotic reasons.
"If the two cities are well connected, we can grow together," he said.* (CNC)

Mayor seeks P1B budget for Bacolod
We have finally reached the P1 billion mark, we are increasing our budget from P755 million last year to more than a billion in 2008, Leonardia said. This means an increase of 32 percent which has never happened in the history of Bacolod, he said. What is very significant is that for the first time the city has a budget that is more of "local income" than the Internal Revenue Allotment, he said.

^^That's why this Friendship Bridge should be pushed by WV.WV as a whole can have a huge benefit from.It maybe costly but long term benefit of this will more than doubled from what they spent to build. So far i only heard Gov.Maranon is the only one i heard working hard for this long dreamed project.

October 18th, 2007, 03:22 PM
^^ The problem is technology and finances. For technology, when this will be built, it'll be the longest in the world - if it is a suspension bridge (most likely it'll be a suspension because of the large traffic of ships passing thru). It'll beat Japan whose Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge is 2 kms long. Guimaras to Bacolod is at least 8 km. For finances, it'll take at least 500 million per kilometer. Plus add to that in Akashi-Kaikyo, they get a toll of about $30 just to pass thru.
Well maybe for now, it's still a long dreamed project but maybe someday. I would've wanted it if it were an underground pass, similar to that of England and France.

October 18th, 2007, 03:27 PM
Underground may not be viable because we have natural disaster in here unlike in Europe it very rare for them to experience such Typhoon,Tidal waves,Earthquake.
But as long as they work together, the WV politicians this is very possible. At least Gov.Maranon has started the necessary steps on the feasibility of the Friendship Bridge. They can construct it stage by stage no matter how long it will take.Like in IlioIlo they can start connecting to Guimaras while in Negros they are starting as well. Most likely 5 years to finish it.

`Waxworks 3: Urban Secret' Exhibit Secret (http://www.negrosdaily.com/oct1807v1)
This Halloween Season, feel wax or be waxed again! In its third year, the Performance Laboratory and Culture Foundation Inc. in cooperation with Rolling Hills Group of Companies proudly present and re-open the door to the spooky world of wax through Waxworks 3: Urban Secrets, the annual tricky halloween treat of eerie exhibits set up in seven conceptual chambers displaying live and performing mannequins in full costumes and haunted by creepy music, daunting visuals and frightening effects. It is open to the public on October 19-20, 23, 27, 30-31 and November 2-3, 2007, 6-10 p.m. at The Negros Museum.
This year's theme involves on Filipino folklore and urban legends and its story focuses in family lineage of Don Guillermo San Miguel and his house which was built in the early 1920s located in the middle of a busy urban area. It has housed the family of Don Miguel until they all mysteriously disappeared before the advent of World War II. Due to unexplained circumstances, the house remained empty even during the war despite repeated attempts of Japanese Imperial Army to use it as headquarters. After the American Liberation, a man who claims to be Don Guillermo lived alone in the house with his gardener/butler until his death in 1957. The house remains unopened and unoccupied until now - a clause in Don Guillermo's last will states that his house be opened fifty years after his death so the world will know the truth of the curse which haunted him and claimed his family.
The seven conceptual chambers include pasillo (hallway), sala menor (minor living room), oratorio (prayer room), sala mayor (main living room), patio (garden), cantadora (nursery), and salon de muertos artes. The concepts behind Waxworks allow grouped audiences to pass through these chambers and to unexpectedly interact with surprisingly-moving mannequins, which is led by tour guides who had more tension by exposing supernatural and scary tales of the world of the dead and unknown. With loads of fun and thrills, this unique concept has captivated a wide range of market of all ages including families, friends, students, and various groups.
Tickets are sold at the gate at P20 for children/students and P30 for adults. Proceeds are for the benefit of The Negros Museum. For inquiries please contact 7085080, 4319451 or 09193932579. This project is also brought about by Negros Daily Bulletin, Teleperformance, Killer Bee 106.3, Skycable, 91.9 Love Radio, SM City Bacolod, Casino Filipino Hotel and Dunkin Donuts.
This Halloween feel wax or be waxed! Seek to know the unknown and discover the urban secrets behind Waxworks!*
Variegated Chico, Poensetthia, Orchard Dev (http://www.negrosdaily.com/oct1807v6)
By Edith B. Colmo
Another attraction at the Masskara garden show of Negros Occidental Garden Club (NOGC) at the transport terminal of SM City southwing are fruit trees grown in varied propagation methodology.
The variegated chico at Colorful Greenery of Ingrid del Rosario have multi purpose functions. Produced through inarching, Ingrid's agriculturist Pete describes the variegated chico as decor, landscape material, accent in the garden, facade attraction, and a lot more. Pete said, unlike grafted fruits, inarched variegated chico has longer life span than any other form of plant propagation. The variegated chico on sale at the garden show is about to bear fruits already. Size of the fruit is a little bigger than P10 coin, but tastes very sweet.
Pete explains the inarching process. The base or root stock is native chico, and the scion is variegated chico. The branch of variegated chico must have the same size of the body of root stock. Scrape one side of the bark of the scion, also the part of the root stock, then attach both by touching the branch and body of both materials, and tie tightly with a rubber. Let it stay until one month. Both materials stick to each other already. Slowly cut part of half of the root stock to avoid plant shock. Then wait until 45 days and totally cut the scion. Wait another 60 days (2 months), totally cut the root stock branch, then place it under shady area. Once new leaves grow, it can be put under direct sunlight. In less than one year, it will bear fruit simultaneous to the mother plant.
Pete said, direct cutting will never prosper. In one inarching process, Pete could finish about 20 pots.
Variegated Chico demands good price in the market. In the previous Masskara garden show, it was sold P35,000.00 per pot. But Ingrid sells it at P350.00 per small pot. "I have to adjust to the pockets of the people who are plant lovers," Ingrid said.
People can no longer afford when it is already big because it is already expensive, and only few people can afford.
According to Pete, eventhough it is still small, once the mother plant bears fruit, the inarched scion will also bear fruit. Then it is best as accent for indoors.
POENSETTHIA
The original producer of poensetthia plant is Tess Taleon. But due to great damage on her plants when ransacked by a robber recently, plus the fact that she has no one to take care of her display, she was not able to participate in the garden show. People missed the Christmas plant because of its attractive red flowers. However, an Iloilo exhibitor is the only one displaying poensetthia at the garden show. One pot costs P300 to P350.00.
ORCHARD DEVELOPMENT
Pete Aplaon, known for his orchard development technology, was lecturer in the garden show forum yesterday afternoon. He shared his skills in orchard development and rehabilitation program. It is an accurate rototype technology, wherein the old fruit trees are rehabilitated and rejuvenated. If the fruit tree is already aging, its fruits are becoming smaller in size, and tastes sour. But by rehabilitating and rejuvenating the aged fruit tree, it will enable to bear new and bigger fruits.
Aplaon said there is a certain technology to restore the productive stage of the fruit trees. He introduced a package of technology to his fellow gardeners and visitors.
With the new ideas from Aplaon, the gardeners do not stick on one plant only. Accents and fruit trees are now integrated in the flower garden. Visit the garden show of NOGC at SM southwing for details. It will run until Monday, October 22.*

IN support of the Philippines' popular and most colorful festivals, leading wireless services provider Smart Communications, Inc. (SMART) has partnered with the local government of Bacoiod City by sponsoring the city's 28th MassKara Festival.
The celebration, held every October, has earned Bacoiod the title "City of Smiles", as the festival's prominent feature are the colorful masks worn by the street dancers, all adorned with smiling faces, during the grand dance parade.
The MassKara Festival's main event will be the grand street dance competition, which will be held on October 21.
What's new this year, though, is the Electric MassKara, to be held on October 19. This is the night version of the traditional dance parade, wherein the bodies of MassKara dancers will be lighted up.
SMART shall be holding a "SMART Day" event on October 20, entitled "SMART presents Birada sa Masskara!" Booths will be set up in front of PNB in Lacson street, wherein SMART subscribers can enjoy on-ground activities such as hair braiding, face painting, henna tattoos, and massages.
Live performances of Wowowee dancers Luningning and Milagring await locals who are fans of the popular noontime show. "SMART presents Birada sa Masskara!" will be capped off with a concert by reggae band Reefer and Pinoy rock veterans Razorback.
SMART has also tied up with some of Bacoiod City's most popular gimmick places for the festival. SMART products and services will be available in Quorum Disco Bar, Sueno Restaurant and Bar, and North Bar all throughout the weeklong celebration.

Celebrating cityhood

As Bacolod City celebrates its 69th year as a chartered city today, we take time to celebrate our collective achievements as a city and to appreciate how far we have gone over the years as well as look into the future with confidence. Since 1938, Bacolod steadily progressed until its growth into the highly urbanized city that it is today, one that can boast of being able to provide a standard of living that is a notch higher than its contemporaries.
This claim is validated by the numerous awards that the city has garnered from various groups and bodies, recognizing Bacolod as the most business-friendly city, the most child-friendly, named as one of the top 5 Most Competitive Mid-sized cities in the country, and the top four most disabled friendly city, among many other awards.
The recent years have also been friendly to Bacolod, evident with the construction boom that the city is currently experiencing, the entry of malls, and the mushrooming of call centers. Even the local government has gotten into the act with the construction of a modern government center building; something that the capital city of Negros Occidental had been missing while the other smaller cities in the province had already been upgrading their seats of government.
A city is built not just by its elected leaders, but by all its citizens, and the optimistic outlook of the future for Bacolod and its people can be attributed to the dynamic relationship of the people and its leaders, which in the past has laid down a strong foundation for sustainable growth. It is the same relationship that is propelling our city to new heights these days, and will be the same formula that will consistently push our city to be among the best of this country in the future.
Bacolod is a product of the people who by living in it build it with every day of their lives. As we celebrate 69 years of cityhood with parades and other activities, let us remember the efforts and the sacrifices of those who have gone before us, and do our best to be part of the solution rather than the problem so that we will have more reason to celebrate future charter day anniversaries.*

Bacolod became the fifth city in the country to be granted a Charter under the Commonwealth Administration of President Manuel Quezon.
Known now to be a highly-urbanized city, the 69-year-old Bacolod will honor those people who made a dent in its life as a community.
Highlighting Friday's celebration is the bequeathing of the "Ang Banwahanon Award."
This may not be a good English transliteration but the Hiligaynon 'Banwahanon' could mean 'community orientation,' 'a sense of community' or 'social conscience.'
Five 'Banwahanon' awardees were chosen from the world of business, education and medicine by Board of Judges composed of Fr. Mamerto Alfeche, Primo Esleyer, Manny Jalandoni, Gil Octaviano, Atty. Rodolfo Parreño, Architect Manuel Puentevella.

Those who made honest tax payments will be rewarded as well.
For corporate accounts, they are Mcdonalds, Schurmann, and Van Ginnekan Phil, Jollibee de la Rama and Jollibee La Salle and Coca Cola.

Let the reign begin
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN
A day after she took home the silver crown, 2007 MassKara Queen Rosario Anne Sales said she's still very much the student nurse who does her rounds at the hospital in pursuit of her dreams.
"It's a new day. I'm celebrating but there are no big changes," Sales told the DAILY STAR as she prepared for her final exams at the University of St. La Salle where she's now in her senior year.
The 20-year-old said she's very thankful to her family and the people who supported her throughout her month-long quest for the title, including the 5,544 texters who voted for her before the coronation night at the USLS Coliseum Wednesday.
"It's as if God planned out everything for me (during the pageant) and it all fell into place," Sales said, recounting her first thoughts as her name was announced by host Mel Yanson and as a crowd of around 500, some of them sporting banners bearing her name, cheered in celebration of her win. As she starts her reign, Sales said she will try to stand up to the challenges of being the festival's queen by showing people that wearing the crown is more than a show of face and glamour.
"I'll make sure beauty will be coupled with character," she said.
Let the reign begin.*PP

Delilan: Iggy and Cyber City (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/10/20/oped/erwin.ambo.delilan.the.buzz.html)
READING the press release from the Office of Representative Iggy Arroyo about Cyber City the other night, I can't help but to admire the solon.
Imagine that Cyber City, one of the famous call centers in the country now, is a US-based call center and has a branch in Clark Zone, Pampanga. Yet Iggy was able to create contact, and is bringing the hiring in his district especially in Binalbagan town on October 25.
And believe it or not, Iggy wants his qualified constituents - either college graduates or undergraduates to apply and be qualified as the next call center agents. What a noble purpose Iggy has for his constituents as he also hopes that a lot from his district will be qualified soon.
Iggy is known for being a silent-type solon but performance wise, media people are always being amazed by his programs and projects aimed at uplifting the lives of his constituents.
Smart and Globe
The other day, I had two meetings with both the public relation officers of competing communication networks - Smart and Globe here in Bacolod City.
First, I met Miss NN of Smart at Kuppa Coffee Haus in Capitol Shopping Center at around 4 p.m.
Then at 7 p.m., I met Sir Jones Campos of Globe at Kaisee Restaurant along Lacson street.
Both brought good news not for me but for Bacolod.
Miss NN said that Smart is supporting Bacolod's MassKara Festival through various activities that will help this year's festivity more lively and colorful.
Among them is the holding of "Smart Day" on October 20, entitled "Smart presents Birada sa MassKara!"
And take note, Smart is bringing Luningning and Milagring who are both dancers in the famous "Wowowee" of ABS-CBN.
Smart is also holding concert by reggae band Reefer and Pinoy rock veterans Razorback.
Globe's Mr. Campos, on the other hand, informed the media that they will also be signing a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Gawad Kalinga (GK) in building a Globe-GK Farming Institute in Barangay Sum-ag.
Globe is donating P1 million for the construction of the livelihood center for this project.
Oh, what a good news that both Smart and Globe had brought to Bacolod.
Kudos to Smart and Globe for these noble endeavors they are into now in Bacolod.

Country's shuttlers to 'flood' Bacolod for MassKara badminton tilt
By Jerome S. Galunan Jr.
TOP collegiate badminton players in the country are expected to flood Bacolod for the 2007 Pohang MassKara Badminton Invitational tomorrow at the Pohang Badminton Center.
The event that was earlier scheduled to unfold today was reset due to some entry problems.
According to Karl Michael Po, tournament director, they have already invited teams who are joining the upcoming University Games (UniGames) but were not able to confirm their participation as of Friday.
However, among the entries that have confirmed to compete in the men's, ladies', and mixed categories with levels: Open, A, B, C, D and E are those from Manila, Iloilo, Cebu, Bacolod and neighboring cities and towns in Negros Occidental.
Based on its technical guidelines, the tournament will adopt the International Badminton Federation (IBF) rules for the current year for all matches.
Other matters and unforeseen incidents not covered by the rules will be decided by the organizing committee whose decision will be considered final.
The tournament committee shall have the power to reject an entry that may be against the interest of the tournament, sponsors or Pohang Badminton Center based on the stated guidelines.
It added that misrepresentation in any form and unruly behavior inside or outside of the court at any point in the event will be a ground for disqualification from the tournament and future disqualification to join in any affiliated tournament.

Busy sporting weekend up
BY CEDELF TUPAS
It will be a busy sporting weekend in Bacolod City as six events take off in different venues today.
At the Panaad pool, about 300 swimmers representing 23 teams will see action in the two-day Masskara Age-Group Swimfest, while the Pohang MassKara Badminton Invitational is also set at the Pohang Badminton Center.
Also scheduled today are the 9th Ray Dizon Memorial Chess Tournament at the USLS-IS covered court and the BUS Group Panasonic Cup 10-Under Basketball Tournament at the Po Hang Gym of Bacolod Tay Tung High School. The Mayor's Cup Age-Group Karate Championships is also set today at the Negros Occidental Multi Purpose Activity Center, while the second BREDCO Cup Masskara Invitational Open Trio Bowling Tournament unfolds at the New Top's Millennium Plaza at 1:30 p.m.
MASSKARA SWIMFEST
The Philippine Amateur Swimming Association has sanctioned the MassKara swimfest, where 134 gold medals spread in seven age divisions (18 and above, 15-17, 13-14, 11-12, 9-10, 7-8 and 6-under) are on the line.
Tournament manager Jake Piccio said there will be seven teams from Bacolod competing, including the Negros Panaad Swim Club, which is fielding three squads, the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club, the Winnie Swim Team, St. John's Institute and USLS.
Piccio said the tournament will also give the swimmers who failed to submit an impressive time another qualifying event for the Philippine Olympic Festival National Finals. PASA president Mark Joseph said only the top 16 swimmers from the qualifying legs will qualify for the POF Finals.
"Since some of the swimmers were unable to submit their best times in the POF Visayas qualifying leg because of the poor conditions in Iloilo, the PASA has allowed this tournament to serve as another qualifier for those who joined the POF but did not make the top 16 as of the moment," Piccio said.
The meet will use the competition management solution timing device, which Piccio says is the latest timing technology in swimming.
Hosting the event is the Negros Panaad Sea Eagles.
Teams that have signed up are Makati Skipjacks, Silliman University, Negros Oriental Blue Dolphins, Iloilo Sea Warriors, Antique-Binirayan Tadpoles and a squad each from Olongapo City, Palawan, Mindoro, Zamboanga and Iligan City.
Aside from the Sea Warriors, Piccio said there are three more teams from Iloilo coming for the event, which will also be open for non-members of the PASA.
He said the PASA has approved the use of time categories to determine the swimmers who posted triple A, double A, A and B times, a standard in international swimming based on age.
POHANG BADMINTON TILT
In a press release, Pohang badminton tournament director Karl Michael Po said badminton enthusiasts all over the country have been invited to compete in the men's, ladies', and mixed categories with levels: Open, A, B, C, D and E.
Based on its technical guidelines, the tournament will adopt the IBF rules for the current year for all matches. Other matters and unforeseen incidents, not covered by the rules, will be decided by the Organizing Committee whose decision will be considered final.
The tournament committee shall have the power to reject an entry that may be against the interest of the tournament, sponsors or Pohang Badminton Center, the guidelines stated.
DIZON CHESSFEST
Chess players from Negros, Iloilo and other schools joining the 2007 University Games are expected to see action in the Dizon chessfest.
In a press release, tournament director Jessie Sanchez said this year's competition is initiated by the JRR Dizon Foundation Inc. in cooperation with Raymundo R.Dizon Memorial Foundation, Bacolod Chess Training Center and the Chess Players Federation in Negros Inc.
The tournament is held annually in memory of the late Mayor Raymundo R. Dizon Jr. who was an avid chess player. It aims to discover new talents in chess and to hone their skills.
As of Wednesday, tournament director Jessie Sanchez said 320 players have already registered for the event.
Top 10 winners will receive cash prizes, with trophies and medals for top three winners.
BUS GROUP 10-UNDER CAGEFEST
At the Po Hang Gym, St. John's Institute will battle Stallion in the BUS Group 10-Under opener at 8:30 a.m., before Tay Tung tackles USLS. BUS Group's Henry Doble said Panasonic area manager Elmer Feliciano will keynote the opening.
BREDCO CUP
The BREDCO Cup is an eight-game series, where the top four teams will figure in a crossover semifinal with survivors battling it out for the crown.
The men's champion will receive P12,000 worth of gift certificates and a trophy, while the women's titlist will take home P5,000, ASSFBI president Edgar Allan Del Rosario said. *CPT

More weekend streetdancing set
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Twenty-eight barangays will compete today for the top prize of P100,000 in the barangay category of the Street and Arena Dance contest of the 28th MassKara Festival celebration.
Streetdance committee chairman Rudy Reveche said the first runner-up will receive P75,000 while the second runner-up gets P50,000. Winners of special awards will be given P5,000. The top ten winners in the barangay category can also automatically join the open category on Sunday if they chose to.
The same option was given to the top three winners in the schools category, both in the elementary and high school levels, Reveche said.
Admitting a lapse in the announcement of prizes during the awarding rites of the schools competition, Reveche said the cash prize for the top three winners were P30,000, P20,000, and P10,000, respectively.
Should the top ten winners in today's barangay competition and the six winners in the school level opt to join, there will be 17 entries in tomorrow's open category, including the King Fisher Group, he said.
The participants will be judged both in their street and arena performances with different set of judges stationed in key areas.*NAB

Electric MassKara kicks off
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN
With a frenzy of performances from Negros Occidental's top dance troupes, the first electric MassKara parade stayed true to its name and energized Bacolod's business district last night.
As electronic versions of pop, reggae, boogie, and classical music played, the neon lights strapped on the dancers' bodies emphasized the waves of their arms and the sways of their hips, engaging the crowd that encircled them as they danced their way through Lacson Street.
The 35-strong contingent of Bacolod's Barangay 23 clad in skin-tone leotards, led the pack with their flower-shaped orange crowns and green mini-lanterns, inching through the audience in columns.
Dressed in black tops and pants, the University of St. La Salle Jean Baptiste Dance Company followed with their hand-held blue, green, and red lights, showing a mix of precise and free-styled moves.
With white masks reminiscent of Halloween, Georgette's Dance Group joined the show with their postmodern renditions of hip-hop and ballet, randomly pulling spectators to dance with them.
Completing the set were the performers of La Castellana town's Bayles de Luces, who marked their way with their lighted costumes literally from head to foot, dancing in circles along the way.*PP

City joins billionaires' club
Mayor urges stronger
gov't, private sector partnership
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday appealed for a stronger, sustainable and maximized partnership between the government and the private sector to move Bacolod City forward.
During the 69th Charter Day Anniversary program at the BAYS Center, Leonardia said, "I believe we have had an unprecedented growth in the past three years," citing the increase in tax collection and employment opportunities.
He said that in 2004 there were no call centers in Bacolod City, but today it is estimated that about 3,000 people are employed by the call center industry, aside from the 5,000 hired by SM City and other new establishments.
Leonardia said the new jobs created in Bacolod in 2006 were 5,900 and in 2007, in only a matter of six months, there were 6,200 more.
He also said the proposed budget for 2008 is quite historic because never before in the history of Bacolod had a budget of P1 billion been proposed.
"Starting today, Bacolod City now belongs to the billionaire's club in the Philippines," Leonardia said. The city has increased its budget by P245 million or a 32 percent increase compared to last year, he said.
Leonardia said Bacolod is the only city in Western Visayas that is a billionaire. He said this means the city has increased its collection in real and property taxes and has started to wean away from its dependency on the Internal Revenue Allotment.
This is the first time that the city has a budget with a local income of 52 percent and an IRA of only 48 percent, he added.
"We can now conclude that we are now in a very interesting part of our history where we are riding on that momentum and we should not let this golden opportunity slip away," Leonardia said.
He said the government needs the private sector to move the city forward that is why they are being honored during the Charter Day.

Like what my friend?
this is what your refering for? "I congratulated (Mayor) Treñas and reminded him that I was not the mayor when Iloilo overtook Bacolod," Leonardia said. Last year Iloilo submitted a budget of P1 billion but it included the P350 million loan that they were preparing for their new city hall, he said.
Bacolod's P1 billion budget does not include the P394 million expected to come from the loan proceeds to finance the new government center, Leonardia said. He clarified that they are not competing with Iloilo but using the figures as a reference.
"With the increase in the annual budget of Bacolod for 2008, we feel that we are now catching up with Iloilo," Leonardia said.*CGSrring for?

^^ I am not arguing who the top 3 are, ok? I am arguing that Mayor Bing said that Bacolod is the only one in the region to be in the billionaire's club.
I have never argued today who the richest is. Please go back to the topic.

^^ Oh good for Bacolod but I don't really care about that. At least what's clear is my argument over that Bacolod is the only one in the region to be in the Billionaire's Club is true. Both the cities are together there. So now are we ok?

^^ The economy of Region 6 has already beaten the economy of Region 7, however with only 0.2% advantage. 6.5% of GDP composition is that of Cebu while 6.7% is that of Region 6.

Exactly,Basically useless and nonsense. There are so many things to be improved eventhough our cities are in the list of Billionaires especially for those families who are struggling to cope up with thier daily needs.
