i think your refering to Bobs place....:) coz thats the only branch of bobs on the east side...:)

http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e262/freeman280/bacolod067.jpg?t=1193582602

i think i've passed by this branch a couple of times! too bad i didn't get to sample their gastronomic delights there at that time! regarding the branching out of bob's to other cities like iloilo as what jaywalker stated, i think so too! the market is there for their (bob's) products.

Smile, husto na.. my tummy's growling already.. hehehe.. That giant cheeseburger of Bobs is really unique. I may say its one of a kind in Bacolod, if not, i think its the only one of its kind in RP. Request lang Smile, pls dont post the picture of this giant cheeseburger. I'll go crazy.

^^ they're not going to expand to other cities, they're trying to maintain the quality of their food and the owners do not wish it to be too commercialized,... besides they prefer to remain as a bacolod culinary icon available only in the city something, that tourists might enjoy.... there is after all a saying " you haven't been to bacolod if you haven't eaten at bob's"

^^is that really the reason of the owners?, maybe they want more time before expanding and moving into diff. markets outside of negros.

Excuse my vernacular but I just wanted my opinion be voiced.

This insecurities are so immature IMO.

No other cities that have experienced so much glory and tragedy than Iloilo and Bacolod. Amo na ni ang handumanan sang aton nga mga ginikanan para sa aton. Matun-an ang mga sala sang nagligad kag mag-hiliusa kita kag tan-aw sang mainuswagong buwas damlag.

I rest my case.

your always welcome berns...no need to worry.

Thanks! That message was meant for each and everyone of us Ilonggos, may it be from Bacolod or Iloilo.

We have mistakes that we did in the past postings but does that mean that we have to continue our endless cycle of bickerings and pointing who is to blame? For that, wala gid pakadtuan ina. I don't want to happen here on what happened to the other forums who were restricted to post on whatsoever. We Ilonggos are different and we can prove that we are resilient.

We just have to base the fact that we Ilonggo forumers have a part of why is this going on. Putting blame to others won't do and pride doesn't pay anything. We're just human beings who commit mistakes. We have to learn from it, swallow our pride and move on for the betterment of our kasimanwas.

Naway pairalin natin ang diplomasya at hindi lamang ang emosyon.

And also, I would like to emphasize that Bacolod and Negros has never been or will never be an underdog. Untata na ang saka'ay sang ihi, batunon nga nagsala ta kag mag-uswag sa mas maayo nga lugar para sa mga kasimanwa ta.

Coop sending 50 Pinoys to Japan for construction work
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino

A Japanese cooperative, Multi-Contractor Cooperative (MCC), is now training 140 Negrenses and 10 others from Cagayan de Oro for six months for a sure construction job in Japan.

Multi-Contractor Cooperative is servicing 60 construction firms all over Japan and has already sent some 350 job trainees from Negros to Japan.

This Japanese cooperative represented by Kunimori Saito has set up an office here in Bacolod whose corporate name is Philippine-Japan Technical Skills Development Association, Inc. (PJTSDA).

Together with Saito are Japanese trainer Yoshitaka Kukuminato, Filipino trainer Henry Baltazar, and 14 other Japanese trainers for carpentry, masonry, and steel breaking.

"We have accepted 150 now but only 50 will qualify for Japan as trainees. We don't call them contract workers because there are none in Japan. While being trained, all the 150 earn allowances," he said.

"We have to raise our standards, however, because of the expectations of our client-members in Japan. While being trained in Bacolod, each trainee receives allowances," Saito further said.

The Bacolod-based PJTSDA partners with the Metro Bacolod Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (MBCCI) in looking for qualified trainees.

MBCCI Executive Director Jose Maria Zayco explained that PJTSDA was founded by former senator Vicente Paterno in partnership with MCC.

Zayco stressed that MCC, PJTSDA, and MBCCI are not recruiters but trainers.

"PJTSDA and MBCCI are partners in processing applicants' papers. Except for their medical examination, which is conducted by the Riverside Medical Center, everything else is free. Transport fare, visa processing, lodging in Japan, and training allowance while in Bacolod," Zayco said.

"All qualified trainees are given a three-year contract in Japan, P30,000 in monthly remuneration, and P100,000 completion bonus depending on the Yen-Peso exchange rate," Zayco added.

Sun.Star Bacolod was witness to the granting of the P100,000 completion bonus to 10 trainees who had successfully completed their contract in Japan.

MBCCI president Roberto Montelibano was invited to hand the amount. He then gave an inspiration message.

All trainees, after completing their contract, were given certificates recognized by all Japanese construction companies all over the world.

SM's Little Stars (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/10/30/feat/sm.s.little.stars.html)

IT WAS a shining moment for Knch Lhnn Cabillo and Andre Roberto Tagle when they were named SM's Little Stars during the Grand Finals held recently at the Centerstage of the Mall of Asia.

This was the highlight of the search in which close to 5,000 cute, talented, lovable, and adorable kids from all over the Philippines participated in. Twenty four finalists were selected during the regional finals to compete for the coveted title during the Grand Finals.

Knch Lhnn, who represents SM City Cebu, is a first grade pupil at from the University of Southern Philippines in Lahug City. This charmer wants to be a chef someday. Andre, , who represents SM City Cagayan de Oro, wants to help others - and dreams of being a superhero or a nurse someday.

Both winners brought home great prizes: P10,000.00 worth of certificate to their Junior Savings account in Banco de Oro; P10,000.00 worth of gift cards from the SM Department Store; P10,000.00 worth of toys from Toy Kingdom; and P10,000.00 worth of packages from Storyland.

Norikawa Asakawa from SM City Clark and Timothy Lambert Chan from SM City Fairview were awarded the First Runner-Up and SM Shining Star titles. Norikawa, who can whip up a storm when she sings, dances, and performs before a big crowd; and Timothy, who wants to join the US airforce one day also each won big prizes: P5,000.00 worth of certificate to their Junior account in Banco de Oro; P5,000.00 worth of gift cards from the SM Department Store; P5,000.00 worth of toys from Toy Kingdom; and P5,000.00 worth of packages from Storyland.

Cassandra Venuti from SM City Davao and Joaquin Renato Gabayeron of SM City Cebu emerged as Second Runners Up and SM Talented Angels Cassandra, a Filipino-Swiss charmer and Joaquin, a star dancer, each received the following in P3,000.00 denominations each: certificate to their Junior Savings Account in Banco de Oro gift cards from the SM Department Store, worth of toys from Toy Kingdom; and packages from Storyland.

The judges, who included Trumpet's Audie Gemora; singer-actress Carla Martinez, GMA Talent Center's Cholo Noriega, ABS-CBN's Chris Navarro, and SM's Marvie Magbulos clearly had a difficult time choosing from the finalists. Criteria for judging included Star Quality or X Factor 50 percent; Personality, Cuteness, and Wit, 30 percent; and Talent. 20 percent.

"It's so hard to decide," says judge Audie Gemora. "Everyone was so good in their talent portions, and they are all beautiful and adorable. It's like judging your own kids, so you have to be careful on hwo and who you choose."

The program, which was hosted by Patricia Bermuda Hizon and JM Rodriguez, had the SM Little Stars from China as their special guests. Talented and adorable Mofan Li, Xiaofan Ma, and Yvonne Li, who represented SM's China malls in Jingiang, Xiamen, and Chengdu, respectively, charmed the crowd with their delightful rendition of the SM jingle.

The SM Little Star pageant is sponsored by Banco de Oro, SM Department Store, Toy Kingdom, Storyland, the Center for Pop Music, Enervon Bright, Mang Inasal, and Picture City.

Bacolod wins national business-friendly award

Bacolod City topped about 130 cities in the country yesterday when it won the “Most Business-Friendly Local Government Unit in the Philippines ” title awarded by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

As its prize the city will receive a two-classroom school building from the Filipino Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

He said this will project Bacolod , not only in the region and in the country, but even internationally because the business conference gathers international businessmen as well as members of the diplomatic corps.

This is even more significant and we are very flattered because this time there was no classification of cities and that means Bacolod was competing with 130 cities in the whole Philippines , Leonardia said.

Biz permits application for 2008 starts today

THE Permits and Licensing Division of Bacolod announces that Business Permits Application Forms for 2008 are available starting Wednesday, said Ardis A. Jaculina.

As the thrust of the Leonardia administration is to provide good service to the taxpayers of the city, the early issuance of business application permits will enable the business establishments to obtain advance clearances from concerned departments/offices, thus reducing processing time in January, Jaculina said.

Clearances from the following department/offices may be obtained in advance: City Health Office for Sanitary Permit and Health Cards; City Planning and Developing Office for Zoning Clearance; City Veterinarian Office for Pork and Meat and other poultry products; Office of the Building Official for Building Occupancy; Barangay Clearance from respective barangays, and City Tourism Office for evaluation of categories for tourism-related establishments.

For more details, interested parties may contact telephone number 4352606 or 4333795 and may look for Ardis A. Jaculina.

MassKa-Sadya (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2007/10/31/feat/masska.sadya.html)

http://i161.photobucket.com/albums/t226/cosmosnegros/festival_masskarabacolodusual.jpg

MASSKARA all throughout the years has undeniably mimicked its predecessor's manner of salvo. In the past 10 years Masskara unfortunately, saw fewer and fewer fellowship from Bacolodnon themselves.

"Amo man na gyapon." as most say. Same old "over crowded Public Plaza beer garden," Same rock concerts swarmed with people high on everything, the inconvenience of the container toilets (not to mention the stench.ewe!) and the likely possibility of being harassed - robbed - or stabbed. All of this topped with the crazy traffic that just makes you want to lock yourself at home. In a nutshell - slides to bad tourism.

My last Plaza masskara was 5 years ago, wherein we have to chose the nearest stall to the Bac-up detachment just to ensure our safety as Masskara in the past usually concludes on the papers with incessant casualties. This becoming almost a norm, packaged to the festival. This Bacolod Fiesta, which was spun from the struggles of the Negrenses who battled the Sugar Industry recession back in the late 70's, was slowly becoming an omen of trouble.

Kudos to the 2007 Masskara directors, especially to the Artists behind who just in time refashioned a new character to this year's celebration. A great change far from the past duplication & monotony.

Masskasadya!

Like a caterpillar to the butterfly, the 2007 Masskara metamorphic growth is bursting forth and flying with an energy & tonicity so strong that it brought back the prodigy of Masskara's brilliance and fascination to the highest high.

Surely, the late Art Association of Bacolod (AAB) President : Ely Santiago who coined the word -Mass(people) & Kara (face) will be looking & smiling from above the Bacolod skies.

Early Friday morning (Oct 19, 2007), Bacolod closed it's Lacson Street to make room for a stretch of regalia. A smorgasbord of party tents, mini concert set-ups, larger than life sound system with throbbing sub-woofers & spot lights in every corner with the diameter of a bicycle tire.

The 6th street of Lacson to it's 23rd was officially a party zone. It was like falling into Alice's wonderland as soon as you ducked in the tug rope borderlines. It was a hedonist paradise.

Lucky enough to residing so close to this haven, I slipped into my most comfortable flip-flops & walked my way with friends to the Bank of Commerce where the charming: Ms. Grace Solatorio hosted an al fresco wine & dine for Bank of Commerce (BOC) clients & friends. It was one of the best Masskara parade lookouts considering the building was on elevated ground. Incidentally, the boom boxes were right in front of us that one can't just help but move down and street strut. The BOC masskara night was a homogenous mix of businesspeople, farmers & fellow bankers - all after a hard week's work would just like to welcome a good cocktail laced with great company.

We witnessed from our watchtower the spectacle of the 1st ever electric Masskara. An army of street dancers with reflectors, blinking head dresses, neon masks & night glow suits flouncing & jerking to the beat of the drums in pulsating volume makes you just want to run down on the street and dance with your beer.

The next day you wake up with a hang and try to remember as much as you can of the last night's pure pursuit of happiness. The next day I decided to stay more sober and relish the festival for what it really is, after all - the beers will always be there.

I trotted the streets of: Lacson early 4pm, Saturday, in broad daylight and with a strong dose of caffeine to take photos. I was caught in a weird sense of de ja vu.racking my brains to figure out it's relation, It was funny but I conjured it's ambience with my Boracay beach walks (sans the beach & the bikinis)

I realized that after 33 years as a Bacolod resident, it was my first time to really walk the Lacson round horizontally center ward; being the busiest street in the city.

It was fascinating to watch the establishments around propping up their tents, seeing a few drunks on every block who had 1 to many so early in the afternoon, the band stands conducting sound checks, Koreans here, Germans drinking to commemorate their own Oktoberfest and the Americans everywhere. It was like a different corner in a different time - so surreal. It took a long time for Masskara to feel this way, a feeling of wanting it not to end, a feeling that you will be eagerly awaiting for it again the next October.

The sundown ushered in more crowd, more lights, more sounds & course, more beers donned by the ostentatious splash & dash of fireworks glittering the City of Smiles; followed by the oohs & aahs of the revelers. This Saturday night was highlighted by the parade of masquerade dancers contemplated in almost theatrical costumes. In Silver , golds & platinums, they sashayed the streets, one can't help but pity the girls in stiletto pumps.

The performers gyrated & swayed glowing like human disco balls in the streets. One of the treats I enjoyed most were the Manila bands who played back to back with our own local bands.

It was the night to smile as you brush shoulders with friends and familiar faces. It was the night to smirk and throw your dagger looks to those who literally brush your shoulders whom you don't know.

I would like to congratulate our local police force for being so vigilant and alert in securing peace & order for this festival, ensuring everyone's right to enjoyment & partying without getting paranoid.

Sunday saw me with leg cramps from walking and what the heck! This masskara deserves a standing ovation anyway.

Ah! Bacolod getting better & better.

Preicely!!!! there were many kapuso stars who visited the city for the previous months starting from the openning of SM down to the masskara celebration. Last years masskara was also flocked by kapuso stars when they did the SOP at SM grounds. :) I wonder what will be the next step of Kapamilya here in Bacolod once Kapuso will start its operation in the City where SMILE never fades. :)

you may read the article below,,,during the masskara 2006 with GMA

Baskug gid Kapuso sa Bacolod! (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife2_oct30_2006)

By Isah V. Red
In Bacolod, Kapuso is strong. That’s what the title of the column says. And it’s probably true. Based on the turnout of Bacoleños at the parking lot of still-under-construction SM City for the live remote telecast of GMA-7’s S.O.P. two Sundays ago, Mega Manila’s no. 1 television network is now giving ABS-CBN tough times in other cities across the archipelago.

While the Bacoleños watch Kapamilya programs from a relay transmission through GMA Network’s Iloilo broadcast center, they seem to be enjoying every show on the network.

The crowd at the SM City Bacolod parking lot wasn’t as huge as those we’ve seen in Cebu, Davao, and nearby Iloilo, yet considering that the network doesn’t even have a TV station in the city the loyal fans of Kapuso programs braved the simmering noontime heat to get a glimpse of their favorite stars.

When the show went on the air at exactly 12 noon, the crowd didn’t mind being toasted under an intensely hot Bacolod sun for as long they could see on stage Dennis Trillo (who got the loudest scream every time he’d make an appearance on the makeshift stage).

Dennis, who is starring in the afternoon soap Now and Forever: Dangal with Jennylyn Mercado, was easily the crowd favorite especially when he proved to the thousands of female Bacoleños drooling over his unmistakably handsome face that he could hold his own in the musical numbers that pit him against established singers like JayR and Gabby Eigenmann.

Dennis, Gabby, and JayR were just among the Kapuso stars who flew to Bacolod for the special Masskara telecast on S.O.P. The others were Alfred Vargas who celebrated his birthday last Oct. 24 (he was treated to a pre-birthday celebration bash at Aruba by the owners of Walker briefs Friday, Oct. 20), KC Montero, the Pinoy Pop Superstars winners and finalists (Jonalyn Viray and Brennan Espartinez, Gerald Santos), and recent-mom Jaya (daughter of wacky comedienne Elizabeth Ramsey) and openly gay noontime clown Allan K.

Aiza Seguerra was also in the company of Kapuso stars as a special guest. She did a spot with Jonalyn.

The Kapuso stars flew in and out of Bacolod that day, except for Dennis who stayed for a gig with a band later in the evening.

Best TV station

Speaking of GMA Network… it recently bagged multiple awards in the recently held 2006 Philippine Movie Press Club Star Awards for Television, including the prestigious Best Station Award which the Kapuso Network has won for the second consecutive year now.

GMA-7’s primetime newscast 24 Oras is one of the winners in the Best News Program category while Vicky Morales won as Best Female Newscaster for Saksi. Winning the Best Public Service Program Award is Wish Ko Lang! while Mike Enriquez was named Best Public Service Program Host for Imbestigador. Debate won as Best Public Affairs Program and its hosts Winnie Monsod and Oscar Orbos received the Best Public Affairs Program Host Award. Pinoy Abroad won as Best Travel Show and its hosts Ivan Mayrina and Rhea Santos received the Best Travel Show Host Award.

The GMA entertainment shows and talents who won awards were Love to Love for Best Youth Oriented Program, Startalk as one of the winners of Best Showbiz-Oriented Talk Show, Marian Rivera (Agawin Mo Man Ang Lahat Sa Akin) for Best New Female TV Personality, Christine Jacob (Mobile Kusina) for Best Educational Program Host, Bubble Gang for Best Gag Show, Bahay Mo Ba ’To? for Best Comedy Show, Rufa Mae Quinto (Hokus Pokus) for Best Comedy Actress, Ogie Alcasid (Bubble Gang) for Best Comedy Actor, Ang Mahiwagang Baul is one of the winners for Best Horror/Fantasy Program, Now and Forever for Best Daytime Drama Series, StarStruck 3 for Best Talent Search Program, Regine Velasquez for Best Talent Search Program Host, and Eat Bulaga for Best Variety Show.

GMA-7 also received the Best Reality Competition Program Award for Extra Challenge and the Best Reality Competition Program Host Award for Paolo Bediones and Ethel Booba. GMA Network’s sister station QTV-11, which is celebrating its first anniversary on Nov. 11, also brought honor to the network by bagging the Best Lifestyle Show Award for Gandang Ricky Reyes. The Best Lifestyle Show Host Award was also given to Ricky Reyes for Gandang Ricky Reyes while the Best Game Show Host Award was won by Arnel Ignacio for Now Na!

^^^^ This is truly one good news NG. More jobs to all Bacolodnons and Negrense. More business, more jobs. Kudos. Thats why Bacolod's local govt should push for the develoment of the old Bacolod airport into a SEZ. Give more incentives and tax holidays to all would be locators to Bacolod SEZ. A little sacrifice in the part of our local govt could mean great benefits for the people.:)

yep, but they are building the highway slower than a sloth. Imagine 2002 they start the project now it's almost 2008 and wala pa isa ka kilometer ang naubra nila?? tapos amu pani gina pabugal nila nga feat?? kahuluya gd kaayo sang ini nga project mayu ni tani galing laban sa kurakot amu ni nga more than 5 years na wala pa 1km ang na build nila.

Im not proud of this project because it is in the hand of corrupt people and any project in their hands are not worthy of praise or honor they are failures and disasters.

Sounds Good NG! Aside from the available human resources,a more stable and cheaper cost of electricity in Negros makes it more attractive to this kind of investment.Bacolod is positioning itself as an alternative site for IT outside Manila. This will give a push to the University and Colleges in Bacolod to offer more IT courses to be able to fill the needed manpower in the IT sector.Local Government with Councilor Batapa Sique is working together the call center operators and schools in Bacolod to meet the demand manpower needed.

Way before the road rehabilitation, express or non-stop vehicular services to the South when reaching the vicinity of Bago City they can speed between 80-100 kph.Well mostly doing the 120kph are private vehicles.I'm not sure if someone really doing the over speeding but it is possible. You will be tempted to run your car in higher speed when your into this roads. But remember speeding is dangerous and could take our lives away.

Thanks for the update Suv111.

Glad it has passed through Tangub Church. It's quite a slow paced construction but many small Bacolod construction businesses has given opportunity to be apart of this project.Massive road work involved in this project like breaking the old and existing ones and reconcreting it again making it more thicker and durable.

Mig Gonz is still missing!

Anyway with regards to Gaisano's Grand Regal Hotel, that building was a should be the first 5 star hotel in Bacolod. It was named Tatsu Hotel,a Japanese investment which was supposed to be a four storey building.I think they were also affected by the Asian Crisis in 1997 and because that it didn't went ahead according to the plan. That was also the time were Bacolod was campaigning itself to become the Convention Center of the South with the Bacolod Covention Hotel leading the league of hotels operating in the city.

I guess they couldn't do that as the airport is just too close... another reason why the old airport should be closed.

It is good to hear that the hotel is doing well despite tough competition from the biggest hotel in the city. They should do something with the color scheme of the hotel as it looks so "bakya".

I think most of the Gaisano buildings have that very colorful looks.

The city should do something on controlling the horrible traffic scene during peak hours along Gaisano. They must impose strict traffic rules flow to improve the flow of the vehicles.

The city must act to protect the pedestrians crossing the street towards the mall. The designated loading and unloading section are becoming the terminal of jeepneys. They must have to follow what Cebu has done on being a disciplinarian in terms of traffic rules and regulations implementation.

The suggest before was installing a traffic light in front of Gaisano City Mall.Did they go through with it?How's the traffic situation there nowadays during peak hours like 4pm to 7pm?

Ako na lang ang wala Bacolod bldg avatar. Soon, I will. :) Btw Jay, with regard to the traffic situation along Gaisano City. I suggest they install a center island or steel barrier along that route since traffic lights might take a longer time before the SP's approve it. In this manner, public jeepneys will not overlap from the other side of the road. And most importantly, increase traffic aide visibility in the area. But so sad coz this just show that most of our drivers(esp. jeepney drivers) still lack the basic discipline on the road.:ohno:

Bacolod City develops culture of excellence

BACOLOD CITY, Nov 1 (PNA) – Bacolod City has already developed a culture of excellence with its numerous awards coming from various sectors, according to Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

Just last week, this city was awarded the 2007 Business Friendly City in the Philippines during the 33rd Philippine Business Conference held at the Manila Hotel with no less than President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo as guest.

Bacolod City has outsmarted other progressive cities in the country like Makati, Marikina, and San Fernando, Pampanga.

Leonardia said he was proud of the numerous achievements of the city, especially that it has proven its worth to provide the most business friendly climate to investors.

"We will try to be responsive to see to it that we listen to every businessman, to see to it that they will grow because if they grow the city will also grow. The award has made waves in the business community. We will try to live up to their expectation,” he said. "When people start looking beyond Makati, Bacolod is next,” he added.

Bacolod got its first Business Friendly award in 2006.

It was also recognized as Disabled Friendly City, 2nd Best Peace and Order Council in the Philippines, among others. (PNA)

Actually when there's a presence of traffic enforcers the traffic flow a bit better.Steel barriers is always find it's way as the last resort to those undisciplined .

Normally,we are trying to escaped that way(forgot the name of the street along Gaisano. Is it still Araneta St.) and instead use the other road all the way to Goldenfield Complex as our entry and exit points in going to and from the city.

Do you think it would work if they install a pedestrian bridge like what they did in Robs?I think Gaisano City mall should have a jeepney terminal like SM City does and do not allow PUV's from stopping along the side of the street.

Robinsons is also one of the places where traffic situation is at its worst...even within the mall itself...sa may entrance dapit, it becomes congested during night time...people tend to park on both sides of the street and the guards doesnt mind at all...even the cab drivers, they will unload their passenger and then try to stop to pick up another passenger without paying any respect to those making "pila" for their turn. :) grabe gid ka mga ungo sang mga driver ah!!!!

^^ Actually for most Filipinos, "Discipline is such a lonely word". Thats the battlecry nowadays. Its not only in obeying traffic rules, but its bigger than that. Coz if we're just as disciplined as most of our asian neighbors, siguro first world na kita na nasyon. haaayyyy, so sad.:ohno:

Two Call Centers Set to Open in Bacolod Next Year

Convergys opens Bacolod facility
Contact center firm Convergys is expanding to Bacolod City in the first quarter of 2008, earmarking about $3 million to build its ninth Philippine-based facility with an initial 300 employees.

The 3,000-square-meter facility at the San Antonio Park Square can accommodate about 500 employees.

Executive vice-president for Global Operations Clint Streit said the company was considering other locations in Western Visayas for future facilities.

He said that despite the appreciation of the peso, the company is growing fast enough to expand.

Business process outsourcing (BPO) firms recently expressed concern over the effects of the strong peso and are considering seeking government help.

Convergys, however, is already satisfied with the tax holidays recently granted by the government, said Streit.

"The government has been very supportive and we really can't ask for more. I think it is unfair to ask the government to step in to rein in the strengthening peso, which is more a function of the US economy's troubles," he said.

"What the private sector needs to do is look for ways to cope, say through hedging. We [Convergys] are into hedging and we try to bring down costs without sacrificing quality to protect our margins," he added.

As for future expansion after Bacolod City, country manager Marife Zamora said that the company was considering areas where there is an abundance of English-speaking college graduates who are also proficient in information technology.

Zamora told reporters that in Bacolod, for instance, the local talent pool speak English better than Filipino.

Once operational, the new Bacolod City facility will provide both general support and advanced technical help desk services to a variety of Convergys clients via traditional voice calling, e-mail, and web chat as well as "back office" application and document processing.

"Convergys offers its clients a choice of options where their outsourced customer care operations can be located. These locations are selected on many criteria including the availability and quality of the potential employee pool," Zamora said.

"I am proud that the Philippines offers an exceptionally motivated workforce of highly dedicated, well-educated, English-speaking professionals and the infrastructure needed to deliver world-class customer care," Zamora added.

The new contact center in Bacolod City will be closely integrated into Convergys' "Global Assurance Network."

This gives Convergys control of its end-to-end operations and processes, just as the company has in North America, Europe, and in India, and assures 100-percent redundancy and flexibility for clients.

Firms can now process business permits for '08 (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/November/03/businessnews1.htm)

The Permits and Licensing Division of Bacolod City is now starting to distribute business permits application forms for 2008 to allow establishments in the city to process their documents early.

“The early issuance of business application forms will enable business establishments to obtain advance clearances from concerned departments/offices, thus reducing processing time in January,” Permits and Licensing Officer Ardis Jaculina said.

Clearances may be obtained in advance from the following department/offices: City Health Office, for sanitary permit and health cards; City Planning and Developing Office, for zoning clearance; City Veterinarian Office, for pork and meat and other poultry products;

Office of the Building Official, for building occupancy; Barangay Clearance, from respective barangays; and City Tourism Office, for evaluation of categories for tourism-related establishments. To apply for business permit, needed are community tax certificate (single proprietorship) and community certificate number for corporations.

New business permit applicants are required to submit additional requirements, including Securities and Exchange Commission registration and Articles of Incorporation; Department of Trade and Industry business name registration for sole proprietorship and Cooperative Development Authority registration (for cooperative);

Those seeking for permit renewal should submit Social Security System clearance, Bureau of Internal Revenue certificate of payment, and license to operate from government agencies concerned.

Jaculina said earlier this year the Permits and Licensing Division want to ensure the installation of a computerized system by December in preparation for the "One-Stop-Shop" at the BAYS Center in January to reduce processing time to less than an hour.

The "One-Stop-Shop" business permits processing of Bacolod City won the ANVIL national award for its excellence in business performance during the national convention of the League of Cities of the Philippines in Manila last year.

Reliving the past. This will take place tomorrow when the Kanlaon Theater Guild of Colegio San Agustin – Bacolod stages Cinco de Noviembre, as its way of commemorating the historic occasion that liberated Negros – under the leadership of Generals Juan Araneta and Aniceto Lacson — from the clutches of Spanish rulers in 1898 through a bloodless revolution.

The CSA-B group will also perform excerpts from Dr. Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo at Balay Negrense on Nov. 7 at 6:30 p.m. The performance is one of the activities in the week-long celebration of Cinco de Noviembre and patronal fiesta of Silay City (please see next page).

Four vignettes will be presented will be staged in the productions with free admissions. These are Isang Gabi sa Buhay ni Sisa, directed by Gerlie Cometa; Paalam, directed by Jillan Suclan; Kapighati-an ng Isang Instik directed by Eugene Cataluña; and Basilio at Simoun directed by Ricardo Salanap, Jr.

Rudy Reveche, regional officer of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts is the over-all artistic director of the production.

That is good news. Bacolod seems to be attracting a lot of BPO companies. Problem is, we have very few schools to train and educate our youth. There might come a time that companies will stop considering Bacolod once they realize that Bacolod does not have as many universities as the neighboring cities in the region. It is high time that our government start investing in education as well as start inviting educational institutions to invest or expand here. The wealthy in the city should also start investing in our city by providing scholarships to deserving students.

i think BPOs already know about the existing schools here in Bacolod and they'e not worried about it. Thats already included in their studies before putting up a business here. Maybe what attracts them most is the business atmosphere in City and the efficient, hardworking people of Bacolod. We may lack universities here but that doesnt hinder the city to attract BPOs in putting up a business here. But then again...it will be a good idea if the government will consider in expanding the educational facilities in the city

Another thing is,this BPO jobs is not for only for Bacolod. It is for the entire Negros. And i think there some who were employed by this companies who are not a Bacolod resident nor a Negrense.

Aside from the characteristics of a true blooded Bacolodnon ,the available manpower resources and the city's ambiance, the stable power supply and doing business in Bacolod is some of the factors that makes Bacolod attractive to businesmen.

Government must make education a priority. I think it should be on top of its priorities. Bacolod have the numbers in terms of human resource needed by these BPO's. But i agree with you that supplies are limited and may drain in years time. Qualified graduates from towns and cities around Negros can always be tapped. But of course it would be best if this problem be anticipated and resolved the soonest by Bacolod's local council. These BPO's are attracted to setup their operations in Bacolod mainly due to the huge number of potential applicants whose English proficiency are at par or even higher than industry standards. Not to mention Bacolod's good environment(low crime rate & greenest), tax breaks/incentives(business friendly) and excellent IT infrastructures.:)

The City of Bacolod has initiated a program that will enhance the skills of Bacolodnon and to prevent human resources to run out in IT.This program is headed by Councilor Batapa Sique. It's in Bacolod website. They have a special section of the website dedicated to IT sector titled "Make IT Bacolod".I saw an ads of UNO-R and some school for IT courses.

none as of the moment...i think the project will resume once the one in iloilo will be completed. They stopped the construction coz of some problems with the contractor. Kaya we have to wait pa asta matapos ang sa iloilo then diri naman sa Bacolod

We'll have to wait for the IloIlo flyover to be finished before Bacolod flyovers can be started.
