Through the years I just realized that Bacolod really succeded in putting up a brand marketing to our dear city. The brand recalls like chicken inasal, piaya, Sugar, fighting cocks, and of course Masskara fest. Just mention those, and definitely one will recall Bacolod or Negros.

Exactly,it's like truely a must to visit to a Chicken Inasal resto to prove you've been to Bacolod. When you meet someone and would know you're from Bacolod he would gladly tell about the diffirent taste of Bacolod's chicken inasal.

Amazingly it is! Actually they can easily capture patrons in malls and it makes me wonder why most of the restos in Bacolod are stand-alone.Most restos that occupies in Bacolod Malls are mainly fastfood outlets .Well not all since we have fastfood stand-alone store around the city but mostly you can them in malls.

LCC Bacolod goes global

La Consolacion College Bacolod (LCCB) is an educational institution that offers a full range of bachelor’s degree and non-degree courses in the fields of architecture, fine arts, interior design, hospitality and tourism management, business administration, information technology, liberal arts and education.

Founded on March 12, 1919, LCCB stands as the oldest and at the forefront of Catholic educational institutions in the Province of Negros Occidental – a highly regarded institution run by the Augustinian Sisters of Our Lady of Consolation that produces globally competitive, Catholic, Nationalist graduates through quality instruction, relevant research and responsive extension service.

LCCB is committed to academic excellence. Students take delivery of professional training from qualified faculty members with vast experiences in the industry. It has figured prominently in board examinations for architects as its graduates had been 1st placers, at other times 2nd, 3rd or a 4th but more often 100 percent passers in the Licensure Examinations for Architects given by the government throughout the Philippines. The feat has catapulted LCCB to its stature as one of the Philippine’s top schools.

One must not wonder why prospective students from other places in the country are tempted to come to Bacolod just to enroll in La Consolacion because it is also the pioneering provider of baccalaureate degrees in Hospitality and Tourism Management. Some of its graduates have landed jobs as teachers in hospitality management related courses in other educational institutions. It boasts campus facilities, which feature hotel-quality arrangements and integrated advanced learning technologies.

The LCCB approach to education is unique and highly differentiated. To prepare for jobs in the regional and global industries, students work closely with faculty mentors, who are themselves industry experts and professionals. Students also gain priceless real-world experience from extensive work internships both in the Philippines and abroad.

La Consolacion College Bacolod has entered into a partnership with Singapore that allows students to conduct their practicum in Singapore’s world-class hotels and establishments. Hospitality Management students are provided with the opportunity to acquire practical knowledge, skills attitudes, favorable work ethics, competencies and enhanced exposure and acculturation on hotel and restaurant operations that observe international standards and services.

Under the agreement, students’ transportation from the Philippines to Singapore back and forth including their board and lodging for 6 months are shouldered by the employer. Students are also given a monthly allowance.

Since 2001, more and more senior students are sent abroad. The students’ excellent performance track record and good interpersonal relationship have increased the demand for employment abroad. Now, the Memorandum of Agreement is expanded to Tourism and Commerce Programs.

What makes LCCB even more attractive to incoming college students is the friendly environment that prevails inside the campus. Where else can you find a community from where you will get quality education and gain more friends? Your search will ultimately bring you to La Consolacion College Bacolod.

http://mbweb.alchemy.com.ph/db_images/articles/laco1194849609.gif

A growing community of friends...

Humble beginnings

La Consolacion College in Bacolod was established on March 12, 1919 by three Augustinian sisters whose attempt to open a colegio in Sibalom, Antique, ended in frustration.

In 1917, on the request of Jaro Bishop, Dennis Dougherty, the three sisters initiated their Catholic apostolate there because of the strong Aglipayan presence in the province. One of the founders of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente, Fr. Narciso Hijalda was from there and he became its first IFI bishop. Understandably, the Catholics were in a minority and suffering from the backlash of the Spanish rule that ended in 1898.

The sisters tried their best to educate the children of the remaining Catholics, but they were derided and ridiculed. Their convent was stoned at night and some rabid Aglipayans refused to sell to them. Despite the various difficulties, their work received commendations during the provincial fair in 1918 where they exhibited the arts and crafts of their students. But the pressure for them to leave became stronger when even the niece of the IFI bishop that studied in the colegio sought to be baptized. The pressure had also taken a toll on the health of the sisters, causing Mother Consuelo Barceló, the superior general, to advise the bishop that she was deeply concerned with the health of the sisters.

As Providence would have it, Fiscal Quirico Abeto of Antique was transferred to Negros Occidental. His daughter was a student in the colegio and when he heard of the predicament of the sisters, informed them that the parish priest of Bacolod, Fr. Francisco Vega was looking for a religious order to open a girl’s school in Bacolod. Fr. Vega and prominent families in the province have invited several religious orders but all refused. Mother Consuelo looked into the situation and agreed to the proposition. Fr. Vega had offered the convento (present Bishop’s House) to be school, convent for the sisters, and dormitory for the girls from the towns. With the approval of the new Jaro Bishop Mauricio Foley, Fr. Vega bought the house near the church (present LCC college building) that he used as the parish convent.

From Antique, the three sisters arrived on March 12, 1919 on the shores of Bacolod. They were Sor Tomasa de la Sagrada Familia, Sor Maria Teresa de Jesus and Sor Alfonsa de la Santisima Trinidad. In the reception given to them by the parish priest, public officials and several families announced the founding of the Colegio de la Señora de la Consolacion, an all girls school. On July 15, the school opened its doors to the first students - 36 interns, who were living inside the school dormitory and 50 externs who live with their families or in private boarding houses.

From this humble beginning, Colegio de la Señora de la Consolacion grew and became the first and pioneering private Catholic educational institution in the province of Negros Occidental.

Present times

Eighty-eight years after she was instituted, La Consolacion College Bacolod has gone a long, long way. Since her foundation in 1919, she has blossomed into one of the most prestigious schools in Region 6.

As proof of her commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence, La Consolacion College Bacolod has achieved notable records in board examinations for architects where her graduates had been 1st placers, at other times 2nd, 3rd or a 4th but more often 100 percent passers in the Licensure Examinations for Architects given by the government throughout the Philippines. She is the only school in the region to offer a free and paid international practicum training program for hospitality management, tourism, and commerce students. And just as any prominent colleges ad universities in the country, she has by the same token produced notable civic officials who are now serving the communities here and abroad. All these feats and more have propelled LCCB to a stature as one of the country’s top performing educational institutions.

Even more, LCC Bacolod values sterling education beyond standards. This is proven by her efforts of accrediting curricular programs from the basic education department to the select programs in the college department by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU).

Structurally, La Consolacion College Bacolod has improved dramatically. The rapid growth in population of her students was followed by an increasing demand for improvement of school facilities. The college now has exclusive campuses for her School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Interior Design and for the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. A swim center has also been established. A five-storey hotel building of eminent standard was built for the actual training and formation of HRM and Tourism students. The Mother Consuelo Barceló Activities Center is the latest of these architectural masterpieces and a legacy of the present administrators to the future clientele.

LCCB has proven herself as a reputable institution. Her Education Training Department has produced teachers, supervisors and superintendents not only for the Province but also nationwide. Not to be outdone is the fact that six awardees of the Metrobank Most Outstanding Teachers of the Philippines all came from LCCB (Vigie Cu-1984; Judith Verdadero-1992; Lina Sedonio-1993; Cecilia Locsin Nava-1994; Benito Verdadero-1995; and Josephine Uy Demerre-1996). This prestigious national recognition given to LCCB’s former students is a testimony to her excellent educational standard.

LCC Bacolod’s existence for the past 88 years is a witness of its fidelity to the mission especially in the Christian formation of the youth of Negros and the entire country. Tomorrow, she will stand as it is today. As long as there is one single LCCian with a heart to love and the will to serve; as long as there are competent and dedicated people who believe in the ideals and spirit of our Foundresses, LCC Bacolod will always be a dynamic Christian Community of learning, actively involved in the pursuit of "a Nationalist Education for Faith and Justice Toward a Societal Transformation."

Even restos here in Bacolod opted to venture in malls...like kuppa...they have this cafe booth and also kaisei...bobs, chicken deli to name a few. :) these are wonderful ideas..

Bacolod warned it risks falling behind Iloilo in IT

BACOLOD — Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology has warned information technology (IT) stakeholders here that they could be left behind by Iloilo City if it will not embark on the same initiative being undertaken by its neighboring city soon.

Mr. Ibrahim, one of the main speakers at the Uniting for Bacolod-Negros Occidental Educational Foundation for ICT Conference and Preparatory Workshop last week, said Iloilo City has already moved ahead with the sale of its old airport property in Mandurriao to property firm Megaworld Corp. which will develop the area into a "city within a city."

Reports said at least six outsourcing companies plan to locate at the 54-hectare Megaworld property where a business park will be built at an initial investment of P1.5 billion.

"This is the reason why I can see that Iloilo is going to move ahead of Bacolod in the next two years, if you don’t have the same initiative," Mr. Ibrahim said.

With the development in Iloilo, he said that outsourcing locators will also hire people from Bacolod and Negros Occidental.

"I just wanted you to realize this," he told the workshop participants, consisting of representatives from the academe, local government, government agencies and IT locators.

However, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said that Iloilo is not exactly a threat to Bacolod because it is "complementary to our strategic plans."

Bacolod hosts operations of Focus Communications, Teleperformance, TeleTech, and Convergys.

Both Iloilo and Bacolod are considered "next wave cities" under the Western Visayas Hub, according to the offshoring and outsourcing Roadmap 2010 of the Business Processing Association of the Philippines.

Their combined current number of full-time call center employees of 4,000 is projected to reach 36,000 by 2010.

Among the regional hubs, Western Visayas is second to Central Visayas, which includes Cebu, Mandaue and Dumaguete, with 16,500 such workers and a potential for 47,500 by 2010.

Negros Occidental Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson said a provincial road map for Bacolod and Negros Occidental is in the works. — N. L. Guadalquiver and C. G. Samillano

Bacolod , Neg.Occ aim for 10,000 O&O jobs

Bacolod and Negros Occidental aim to generate at least 10,000 offshore and outsourcing jobs and the same number of qualified professionals by 2010, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said yesterday.

Batapa-Sigue, convenor of the Uniting for Bacolod-Negros Occidental Educational Foundation for ICT (BNEFIT) Conference and Preparatory Workshop, said this was the commitment about a hundred local stakeholders who attended the conference last November 15 and 16 at the Grand Regal Hotel in Bacolod City .

The participants came from the ICT industry, government, academe, business, real estate and the media.

By the end of 2006, total industry revenue in the Philippines reached $3.3 billion with a total of 234,000 total direct workforce.

Operations of major locators in Bacolod generated about 4,000 call center jobs, Batapa-Sigue said.

Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim of the Commission of Information and Communications Technology urged Bacolod and Negros Occidental to enhance talent development, expand the geographical spread of the country's outsourcing capabilities and further improve the business environment for investors.

He called on the local stakeholders to jointly answer the metrics for the Philippine Roadmap 2010, a comprehensive study of the Philippine outsourcing industry which details the aspirations of the Philippine BPO industry and the initiatives needed in order to achieve these goals.

Batapa-Sigue said al l delegates agreed to work with BNEFIT to sustain the gains of the local ICT sector, increase to 20 percent or more the hiring rate and expand the ICT activities from call centers to software development, medical and legal transcription, IT engineering and other ICT enterprises.

Also present during the two-day gathering were delegates from schools, the private sector, including real estate groups, and the cities of Silay, San Carlos, Bago, and Sipalay and towns of Moises Padilla and Pulupandan .*

Rare owl hatched

A rare Philippine Eagle Owl egg hatched recently at the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation's Biodiversity Conservation Center in Bacolod City , NFEFI trustee Robert Harland said yesterday.

This is the third successful hatching of an owlet (Bubo p. philippensis) at the center, he said.

NFEFI-BCC holds the world record for the first successful captive breeding of a Philippine Eagle Owl named “Bubo” in 2005.

The latest owlet hatched on Oct. 28 after 35 days of incubation. The bird's parents, named Mahinhin and Hinahon, are currently the species' only breeding pair in the world.

They are in Bacolod as part of a breeding loan program run in association with the Avilon Montalban Zoological Park and Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau Wildlife Rescue Centre, with the support of Flora and Fauna International and the World Owl Trust, he said.

"We are thrilled to see another owlet", said NFEFI-BCC curator Dr. DJ Darwin Bandoy said. "The mother laid an egg in August, but it did not survive. But there were no problems with the latest egg and the new arrival is healthy and growing well."

The critically endangered Philippine Eagle Owl is endemic to the Philippines but is restricted to the islands of Luzon , Mindanao , Samar , Leyte and Bohol .

NFEFI-BCC welcomes support from concerned citizens, Bandoy said.

If any individual, group or school would like to contribute to the upkeep of the new owlet or would like to be a member of NFEFI, they can call Tel. No. 433-9234, Harland said.*

Call center training site established (http://www.visayandailystar.com/2007/November/19/people.htm)

A call center training site in Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, was established by Araceli Muleta who was inspired by her several visits to Teleperformance-Bacolod, a press release from Teleperformance said.

Muleta started the training for 10 students in October for the Northpoint International Learning Center Inc. She and her students visited Teleperformance-Bacolod recently for an educational tour, the press release said. Students were briefed about the call center recruitment process and were toured around the site where they listened to live calls.

Muleta visited Teleperformance several times to coordinate on how she can help fellow Filipinos achieve their desire to work in the contact center industry, the press release added.*

Village brings holiday cheer
BY CARLA GOMEZ

The ski slopes have opened for the holidays, the trains are running at full speed, villagers are partying and Santa is dancing to festive Christmas music.

All these and more are happening in a 192 square feet Lilliputian Christmas village that from its highest snow covered mountain is about 10 feet high.

Now on its 13 th year run, the Christmas village of artist-designer Bamboo Tonogbanua at his ancestral home at San Juan Street in Bacolod City has again grown in size this year and now has about 3,000 miniature objects.

Tonogbanua said that when he was small, he was fascinated by those snow-covered Victorian and new England villages on Christmas cards.

This led to his life-long collection of miniature houses, ornaments and figures that he has used to recreate scenes from the Christmas cards of his childhood in his village.

My collection became an obsession, I kept saying I would stop but every time I go abroad, especially to visit my sister, Thelma Tonogbanua, in New York I would buy more miniature objects, he said.

Bamboo, who is a lover of the arts, said one time he even gave up an offer for a ticket to a Broadway show for two miniature houses.

Finally as his collection grew in size he decided to start his Christmas village in 1996 that at first covered only about 32 square feet. But the village grew each year as he collected more objects, and friends and strangers pleased with what they saw also contributed to its growth.

Today cable cars glide up and down the mountains, skiers prepare for races down the slopes, rescue helicopters and Santa on his sleight hover above, trains run through tracks and tunnels, fiber optic lights simulate flowing water, villagers gather around a bonfire in a cave at the village, and Victorian characters dance in a brightly lighted up gazebo.

Skaters glide across a skating rink, Christmas trees and houses are lighted up for the holidays, residents dance in their homes, tables are laden with food, fountains spew water in village squares, traffic lights and light houses blink, church goers gather in front of a church, a carousel spins, and village stores selling violins, pianos and preserved fruits are open for business, too.

In the miniature houses, Bamboo's artistic eye for detail also shows in chandeliers made of earrings, paintings on the wall and in little knick knacks that adorn the rooms.

Throughout December from 6 to 9 p.m. Bamboo opens his home to the public. On busy nights about 300 people come to view the village that is a delight to the young and old.

But Bamboo says what gives him the biggest joy is to see the sparkle in the eyes of the children who come to see the village. The looks on their faces make bringing joy at Christmas so worthwhile, he said.

Bamboo's village will be open to the public starting Dec. .*CPG

Yup!Aside from bringing back the memories of Smile778, it sounds very appropriate too.Nami-an gid ko sang title nga ina.Very original and it tells about Bacolod and Negros Occidental diversification process.

Just in case if some agree,we can have a separate thread para sa "Experience Dining in Bacolod".Very much like a lifestyle thread of Bacolod.I think it's the right time for this thread because we now have too many restos both old and new ones combined. It would be nice if we can feature them here one by one.

I agree, I oftentimes find myself thinking about going to Bacolod just for food trip. Namit gd and the prices aren't too expensive. Damo ka pa pilian :D

Maybe they are afraid to make it a pricey coz there are a lot of competition among the restos there

Meg I heard SM group will put up hotel in Bacolod City :lol:
this is one of the 14 hotels they will put in the country and this is only business class hotel not a five star.
Thees no confirmation yet...its all part of the masterplan...they are also planning to put up a convention center but its all still floating. :)
I heard from the internal source, Bacolod City is one of the plan. whats the name of the hotel in pavilion, Tapos na meg.?this is a boutique hotel...... lets pray

I don’t know if the SM Cebu expansion is now completed…they said in a press released before after the expansion of SM Cebu they are facilitating their convention center and townhouses to construct adjacent to their malls in reclamation area,,,maybe they are on the processing of the proposals,,, a convention center w/ a hotel building...updated si NG

It could be Sugar:) But one of the reasons that could bring down the prices in thier menu is by getting thier necessary ingredients in foods locally, products like veggies, meat ,etc produced and supplied by Bacolodnon or nearby cities and towns.

If it's true, then it will good for Bacolod. It's always a wait and see situation.

I got that title before from the poster where the city government made during the times na nag down gid ang sugar industry and the only means to alleviate the problem is to divert from sugar industry to something like handicrafts which is being showcased by ANP. But they were still starting that time and the progress is slow...but then, after a series of advertisements and promotions...They actually made it, and now....were strong in terms of export of handicrafts and other products like processed foods and vegetables.

Ayala Land scouting for BPO sites in Visayas and Mindanao
CEBU CITY — Property developer Ayala Land, Inc. (ALI) is on the lookout for partners and properties for its plan to develop information technology (IT) buildings or parks in the Visayas and Mindanao, particularly in Bacolod, Cagayan de Oro and Davao cities.

Maria Victoria C. Añonuevo, ALI senior vice-president and corporate business group head, said the company was also planning to create special purpose vehicles (SPV) to bankroll these projects.

"It could be a building or a park, depending on the space, the market need and the amount of talent in the place. The market is so bullish. It is true that BPO (business process outsourcing) is a sunrise industry," she said on the sidelines of the unveiling of the eBloc, a 12-storey office building that will cater to BPO companies at the Asiatown IT Park in Lahug.

The P900-million eBloc is bankrolled by the Asian I-Office Properties, Inc., an SPV created by Asiatown developer Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp. (CPVDC) for the project.

Ms. Añonuevo said the eBloc is the first of many projects at Asiatown.

A year after the eBloc is completed, or in 2009, construction of another office building for BPOs would be undertaken.

This second building would rise within the five-hectare portion of the park that comprises the second phase of Asiatown’s development. Only 18 hectares of the 24-hectare IT park have been developed.

CPVDC President Francis O. Monera said the five-hectare portion would be developed into a BPO enclave next year.

Aside from these IT buildings, a hotel is also expected to rise at Asiatown. The park’s retail component is scheduled to open before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, Ms. Añonuevo said a big US-based call center and two other companies that are expanding their operations are interested in leasing space at the eBloc.

"They (the US-based call center) did it through a third party before. Now they want to do it (operate the call center) on their own. They will invest here," she said.

She declined to identify the company because they have not signed an agreement yet.

Like the other buildings at Asiatown, the eBloc will be provided with redundant power and water supply, optimum telecommunication facilities, centralized sewage system and security. — Jessica Banzon-Natad

Ayala North Point celebrates Negros' best on its 10th anniversary

Updated: Monday, Oct 8, 2007

AYALA NORTH POINT (ANP), considered as the premier residential address in Negros, celebrated its 10th anniversary recently in its village clubhouse by paying tribute to the rich historical and cultural heritage of Negros Occidental.

ANP's anniversary celebration is a testament that the Negrenses rightfully carried on the legacy of its rich history, blessed by nature's abundance and imprinted in the hearts of today's generation, said Tetta Baad, head of marketing and sales for VismMin of Ayala Land Inc.

For 10 years, ANP has become the toast of Negros when it comes to premium residential community. To celebrate this achievement, it is but fitting to highlight this with the best of Negros - the rich land, heritage culture, drive and zest for life of the Negrense as a people, Baad said.

Greeting the guests at the clubhouse entrance was an exhibit of old photographs of men and women from prominent families in Negros that collectively shaped the history of the province.

Paintings of Negrense artists were also on display at the adjacent ancestral room of the clubhouse. The exhibit featured the works of Negros-based Artes Figuras group, Charlie Co's group, the Art Association of Bacolod led by Nunelucio Alvarado and Negrense artist Raymund Fuentes.

In their Filipinianas and Barongs, guests were treated to Filipino-style cocktails and entertainment. World-class Kabataang Silay Performing Arts and Rondalla Ensemble livened up the night with folkloric dances backed up by native instrument ensembles. They also enjoyed the performance of acoustic guitar-group Heartwarmers and Checkmates Band and young performers Hadasa von Camporazo, GMA Pinoy Pop Superstar's National finalist, and Johann Enriquez, a vocal solo champion at the Western Visayas PRISAA.

The hightlight of the celebration was the ceremonial toast that honored the Lacson family, headed by Javier and Teddy Lacson, as joint venture partners of Ayala Land. ANP is an Ayala land Premier development built in the vast sugarcane plantation of the Lacson family in Talisay City, about five kilometers from Bacolod.

ANP also honored its 60 homeowners for "trusting the promise of Ayala Land's commitment to enhance land and enrich lives."

ANP is also celebrating the launching of its Phase 3, an approximately 88-hectare land area with 95 saleable lots that feature first-class amenities and facilities, said Therese Borromeo, Ayala Land's branch manager for Negros.

Contact Us About us Home Bacolod, NegOcc Target 10,000 O&O Jobs by 2010
About a hundred stakeholders coming from the information and communications technology (ICT) industry, government, academe, business, real estate and the media have committed to generate at least 10,000 offshore and outsourcing (O & O) jobs and the same number of qualified professionals in Bacolod and Negros Occidental by 2010 during the ICT conference held in the city last week.
The total industry revenues reached US$3.3B with a total of 234,000 total direct workforce for the Philippines as of end 2006. The operations of major locators in Bacolod generated about 4,000 call center jobs, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, main convenor said.

Aside from delegates from schools and the private sector in Bacolod, also represented were the cities of Silay, San Carlos, Bago, and Sipalay and the municipalities of Moises Padilla and Pulupandan, real estate groups, as well as schools such as Bago City College, Kabankalan Catholic College, Silay Institute, and Binalbagan Catholic College, Batapa-Sigue added.

The Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) with the Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) is gearing up to capture ten percent of the world's outsourcing market equivalent to $13 billion revenues and one million employment by 2010 through public-private sector initiatives, CICT Commissioner Monchito Ibrahim told the delegates last Thursday. Ibrahim challenged Bacolod and Negros Occidental to enhance talent development, expand the geographical spread of the country's outsourcing capabilities and further improve the business environment for investors. As a first step, CICT calls on the stakeholders to jointly answer the metrics for the Philippine Roadmap 2010, a comprehensive study of the Philippine outsourcing industry which details the aspirations of the Philippine BPO industry and the initiatives needed in order to achieve these goals.

All the ICT delegates agreed to work for Bacolod-Negros Occidental Foundation for ICT (BNEFIT) in order to sustain the gains of the ICT sector, increase to 20 percent or more the hiring rate and expand the ICT activities from call centers to software development, medical and legal transcription, IT engineering and other ICT strains.

The Philippines was awarded as 2007 Most Preferred Country Location for Outsourcing by the National Outsourcing Association of UK last October, as it clinches the spot of having the third largest market share with $3.3B total revenue for 2006 or 1.4 percent of the market, and already second to India in the call center industry.*

later this afternoon i will post the advertisement of STARBUCKS in bacolod where they already starts hiring for their branch here.

i think the entry of bigger companies/restos from manila or abroad is good. at least it will kick out complacency from all the smaller bacolod based establishments who thought that that just because bacolod was a small town, people will naturally visit them.

This really shows how fast growing our city is...with its present economic condition, Investors will just flock. Confident enough that they will do great business here..
