World boxing champs lead SCOOP honor roll
BY CEDELF TUPAS
Two world boxing champions from Negros Occidental will lead the honor roll when the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines-Bacolod stages the 2007 SCOOP awards on Dec. 29 at the Bascon Hotel in Bacolod City .

San Carlos City-born Gerry Penalosa, the World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion, and WBO minimumweight king Donnie Nietes of Murcia and Bacolod City are the top awardees in the recognition program produced by the local sports communicators' group, headed by its president George Liza.

Penalosa, 35, stunned Mexican champion Johnny Gonzalez in Sacramento , California in August to capture the WBO belt as he disproved that he was a boxer already past his prime.

It was Nietes' turn to provide the province a shining moment in September when he seized the vacant WBO miniflyweight title with a unanimous decision over Thailand 's Pornsawan Kratingdaenggym.

Nietes, 25, also held the WBO Asia-Pacific belt and successfully defended the crown against Thai

“It is rare for a province to have two world boxing champions. Nietes and Penalosa are recipients of our top awards because their achievements have not only made the country and province proud, but also inspired young Negrense athletes,” Liza said.

The honor roll also includes Asian Games and Southeast Asian Games boxing gold medalist Joan Tipon, golfer Juvic Pagunsan, SEAG hammer throw king Arniel Ferrera and national athlete Sheena Atilano. *Scoop-Bacolod

^^ Speaking of SM, after the opening of SM City Cebu, ang next gid actually na mall construction is SM City Bacolod. Too bad lang the main player of Negros' economy(VMC), at that time, was hit by a series of financial and management crises. The original plan pa gani before was to have our very own ice skating rink also. So much like the one in Cebu before. The Sy's loved the location of SM Cebu and Bacolod. They always wanted the harbor and the city center colliding for economic upbeat. But no regrets, Bacolod now has a very beautiful SM City.:)

Yes it is very unique where the bridges makes it become iconic. It's the location that makes it similar to SM MOA.What makes us proud with SM Bacolod is that, it was design by a local, a product of Bacolenos talent.

It would be better for the old City Hall be converted into a garden inspired mall or arcade.. come to think of the uniqueness it will generate.. all the greens and shopping in one roof. Galing daw indi bagay sa ambience sang downtown na pang masa. Or build a mall na lng na daw 888 Chinatown Square style eh.:)

Coz my point is, kanugon sang isa ka project as beautiful as a well designed hotel kon ibutang lang sa downtown. Definitely sooner its beauty and class will fade if dira sa area ibutang. I would bat for a commercial center in replacement to the old City Hall.:)

Outgoing Bacolod dads commended

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod unanimously passed Wednesday two resolutions commending outgoing Councilors Arturo Parreño and Marx Louie de la Rosa for their excellent and invaluable contributions as public officials for the development of Bacolod City .

Parreño, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay, and De la Rosa, president of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation of Bacolod, will officially end their term as ex-oficio members of the SP on Nov. 30, after having served for five years.

The resolution said that under the leadership of Parreño as president of the Liga, major programs were implemented in line with the programs of the Department of Interior and Local Government which is to promote and sustain the Barangay-Based Institutions in the barangay, search for Outstanding Tanod, Gabay sa Mamayan Action Center, Lupong Tagapamayapa Incentive Award, and Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran 2007, signing of MOA between the Liga and the Lady of Mercy Specialty Hospital giving medical assistance to all barangay officials and their dependents, Tanod Senior Citizen and barangay workers, and Solid Waste Management Program.

Meanwhile, De la Rosa, as president of the SK Federation, received the 2006 Outstanding Kabataan Award and Recognition from the SK National Federation and National Youth Commission, and that the OSKAR is a nationwide search that seeks to recognize the outstanding contribution of the SK leaders to their locality and highlights the SK's achievements and good practices as leaders, the resolution said.

Under his leadership, he implemented the establishment and institutionalization of the SK landmark project- the Bacolod SK Youth Center, revitalization and strengthening of the Katipunan ng mga Kabataan in 61 barangays, fostering professionalism and excellence in public service among SK leaders through the conduct of annual Bacolod SK convention and search for Outstanding SK Chairperson in Bacolod City, as well as, other programs and projects such as sports development, anti-drug campaign, among others.

Bacolodnons urged: Use Bacolod-made cards for Christmas

Bacolod City (23 November) -- You can now send truly Bacolod-made cards to your friends and loved ones abroad.

Christmas and other celebration cards done by Bacolod artists are now on sale at The Showroom of Negros Products in Lacson Street, Bacolod City.

The cards are done from works of Dennis Ascalon, Barry Cervantes and Adrian Torres. There is also a six-piece series on Bamboo Tonogbanua's Christmas Village that was photographed by Philip Loyola.

Three Ascalon works titled "Celebration in Bacolod" are available in the cards. They feature the city's landmarks-the bandstand at the public plaza, the San Sebastian Cathedral and the Provincial Capitol building. Ascalon, who is known for his playful but pointed social commentaries, is a founding member of the Black Artists in Asia.

"Parol I and II" are the works of Torres featured in the cards. Torres is a dentist who also does production design for the stage and the movies.

"Sa Bacolod Paskwa Na" (It's Christmas in Bacolod) is the work of Barry Cervantes in another card. Cervantes is into painting, sculpture, graphic design and digital art. (PIA/cad)

Mayor faces more charges on new gov't center project

ANOTHER set of criminal and administrative charges were filed before the Office of the Ombudsman-Visayas against Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia in relation with the implementation of the controversial new government center project.

Leonardia is already facing a total of 10 charges in relation with the implementation of the multi-million project.

The two new charges are technical malversation and violation of Presidential Decree 1445, Sections 85 and 86. The criminal charges were also coupled with the administrative charge of grave misconduct.

Former police officer Victor Eduardo filed the complaints with the assistance of lawyer Archie Baribar.

Named as accused in the technical malversation case were Leonardia, Vice Mayor Judge Thaddeus, Councilors Greg Gasataya, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos, Wilson Gamboa, Jr., Al Victor Espino, Napoleon Cordova, Catalino Alisbo, Roberto Rojas, Alex Paglumotan, Reynold Iledan, Arturo Parre¤o, OIC-City Accountant Ed Ravena, OIC-City Treasurer Anabelle Badayos and Efren Canlas of Hilmarc's Construction Corporation (HCC).

In the other case, the accused were almost the same in the technical malversation except for Badayos and Ravena but including now Councilor Marx Louie de la Rosa.

Under technical malversation, the complainant cited as violation the act of the councilors in passing the Appropriation Ordinance No.19, series of 2007, at the instant of the mayor appropriating the amount of P84,874,684.80 to fund various social projects of the city.

Said amount is to be taken from the P394 million appropriated fund solely for the construction of the new government center.

Eduardo believed that the conversion of the appropriated fund for the construction of the new government center to various social projects of the city, constitutes technical malversation.

On violation of PD 1445, Eduardo cited the conduct of the bidding and signing of a contract on Dec. 27, 2006 and the ratification of it on Dec. 28, 2006 in the absence of an appropriation ordinance.

Based on record, the passage of Appropriation Ordinance No. 17, series of 2007, meant for the said project was only approved on September 25, 2007, appropriating P394 million solely for the project.

None from the accused can be reached for comment Wednesday night.

17, series of 2007, meant for the said project was only approved on September 25, 2007, appropriating P394 million solely for the project.

thanks for posting this @derfbcd. i'd like to go on however to encourage the Bacolod thread regulars to be more discerning when it comes to posting news items like this. let's examine our objectives in being in this thread/forum. why are we here in the first place?

i believe that there is a unanimous effort to showcase BCD and Negros to the rest of the forum participants as evidenced by thread titles such as "We're really more than just sugar". hence, if we agree that this thread is meant to showcase BCD and Negros in general, then news items such as this should go to a different thread or forum so that we can ramble about internal issues separately.

for that matter, if we want to ramble about politics, let's do that at :

ALI mulls projects to provide more space for BPO firms in major cities

ALTHOUGHl known for its development of big shopping malls in the Philippines, Ayala Land Inc., one of the country’s premier property developers, have iversified a huge part of its investments in building facilities that cater to the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.
ALI senior vice president and head for corporate business group Marivic Añonuevo said the company is now in talks with potential partners for BPO building projects in the cities of Bacolod, Davao and Cagayan de Oro.

“Information technology (IT) and the BPO industry today is a growing billion-dollar industry worldwide. As one of the major real estate players in the country, we see this as a great opportunity for investment,” she said.

Like its projects in Cebu, Añonuevo said ALI will enter into joint ventures to implement its projects in different cities in the Visayas and Mindanao.

She said ALI is going to provide infrastructure support for more BPO facilities in second-tiered cities as the company has already established its presence in major cities like Makati and Cebu.

When asked to comment about ALI’s expansion plans for shopping mall investments within Southern Philippines, Añonuevo said the company is still on the lookout for feasible sites.

She said, though, that ALI wants to focus on addressing the need for more office spaces for the growing BPO industry.

She said this is ALI’s commitment in helping the government raise $10 billion in revenues from the BPO sector by 2010, and generating close to one million jobs in the next three years.

Añonuevo earlier said ALI’s future investments in the sector is intended to triple, in the next five years, the amount of space it will be able to lease nationwide with more diverse locations and product lines.

“Depending on the space and the area, it could be another IT park,” she said.

Añonuevo was in Cebu recently to grace the unveiling of its affiliate’s latest project, the eBloc BPO building, which is now being constructed at the Cebu Asia Town IT Park, by Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp.

City library conducts story-telling for kids

The Bacolod City Public Library conducted a story-telling activity for the 60 pre-schoolers of Brgy. 10 Day Care Center Thursday, as part of the National Book Week on the theme “Family Literacy: Reading Begins With Us”, a press release from City Hall said.

The activity was in cooperation with the Rotary Clubs of Bacolod, Bacolod-West and Bacolod-Marapara. The children received crayons and coloring books from the Rotary Club of Bacolod West, snacks from the Rotary Club of Bacolod Marapara, and 60 kiddie chairs for the library from the Rotary Club of Bacolod.

Greta Memoria, librarian and project coordinator, said the activity aims to expose the children to the library and to encourage them to love and read books at an early age, the press release said.

The project kicked off in July this year in line with the celebration of the National Children's Book Day.

Mira Esmeralda Murillo, a former college teacher at the University of St. La Salle volunteered to be a story-teller.

Another story-teller was Rotarian Isaias Iziel Culanag Jr.

One of the materials read to the children was the “Basura Monster” story.

A total of 15,923 elementary pupils have frequented the city library since January this year, or a total of 36,545 including students from high school, college and private individuals, the press release added.*

A grand blessing

LA VIDA NEGRENSE
If a city's progress can be determined by the number of new investors it attracts, then Bacolod City is on the right track. This past month alone, I was invited to more than ten business openings, adding to my long list of events waiting.

Joining the business boom of Bacolod are young
The Gonzaga siblings - Junjun, Leonard, and Tina recently had an intimate get-together with their family and closest friends at their newest business venture, the San Juanokan restaurant at San Juan Street . Guests savored the sumptuous dinner specialties that were served and were impressed by the very laid-back ambiance of the restaurant which was made more chic by its lighting. According to their better halves, Marili Bascon-Gonzaga and Malu Rojas-Gonzaga, who also helps out in the business, the restaurant is open from 4 p.m. to midnight.*

I'm not that sure with Accenture though because they have a different competitor-market but it'll be good news if they'll set up in Bacolod.

Right now from what I've heard from a friend of mine who is working in Accenture-Pioneer site, the company is scouting for other major cities outside Manila and Cebu.

22nd negros trade fair A Success

If the 22nd Negros Trade Fair at Rockwell, Makati last month recorded a high gross sales increase, officials of the Association of Negros Producers, who organized it say it's because of high levels of bookings and negotiations from export buyers.

The increase in gross sales over last year's records included cash sales, bookings and negotiations from walk-in guests and corporate buyers.

The ANP Trade Fair had about 60 Negros producers showcasing their products along with guest exhibitors from Luzon and Mindanao . The Negros-made products included laminated home furnishings, table top decorations, gift items, furniture lamps, resin decorative items, pandan products, ceramic decors, fashion accessories m handbags, garments, piña cloth barong, coco products, wood decorative items, woven and linen and hand-made fabrics as well as food delicacies.

At the Oct. 3 opening at the Rockwell Ten entrance were guests of honor Sen. Loren Legarda, Joey Zubiri, Judy Roxas, Precy Lopez Psinakis of the Lopez Group of companies, Nestor Padilla of Rockwell Land Corporation, Cedie Vargas and Diane Santos of Philexport.

The fair attracted an average of 1,000 visitors daily which included those coming from nearby residential villages in Makati, Ortigas, Pasig as well as those from Alabang and other areas of Metro Manila, the ANP said, adding that members of the Negrense community in metro Manila and other Ilonggos were also regular visitors at the fair.

The visitors included former President Corazon Aquino, Sen. Miriam Santiago and other dignitaries along with a host of celebrities and entertainment personalities.

Holding its business forum and socials in the area was the St. L Salle Class 1965 led by former Gov. Daniel Lacson. The USLS Alumni Association-Metro Manila chapter also held a MassKara Night.

Providing additional attraction were the La Carlota Pasalamat Drumbeaters, which performed with its dancers daily as well as jazz and rhythm sibling-Richard Merck and Rachel Ann Wolfe during the Sugar Night affair, which was hosted by Confed, Unifed, Raul Gamban, Michael Escaler, Sucden Phils., Rep. Zubiri and other ANP supporters.

An additional attraction were the cooking demonstrations and a cake muscovado competition hosted by Elba and Bakel's.

For ANOP, it was “a trade fair to remember, with lots of success stories – from high sales turnout to fun events and happenings, Negrense get together amid a showcase of Negrense ingenuity, creativity, entrepreneurship, a sense of community and people empowerment.”

Bacolod City, Philippines Saturday, November 24,2007

 Bacolod seems having a non-stop growth of Restuarant business.

Discover Bacolod...

The word MassKara has a double meaning. First, it is a fusion of the English word "mass" or many and "kara", the Spanish word for "face." MassKara then becomes a "mass of faces," and these faces have to be smiling to project Bacolod already known in the late 70's as the City of Smiles. MassKara also is the dialect "maskara" for the English word mask, which gives rise to the use of giant smiling masks in varied hues, colors and brilliance which the gaily costumed dancers wear as they stomp, swing, pulsate and gyrate in the major streets of the city every third weeded nearest to the 19th of October, which is the City Charter Anniversary of Bacolod.

Bacolod named ‘most business-friendly’ city
FOLLOWING the award given to the City of Bacolod as "Most Business-Friendly City" in the country by the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, local businessmen in Bacolod are now expecting more investments to come soon.

Bacolod is a city of artisans. Locally made handcrafts are available in markets, shops, and, even, in upscale showrooms and galleries. Hand carved masks and paintings by local artists are for sale and reasonably priced. Serious collectors can head to some of the local showrooms, like the ANP Showroom downtown.

With more banks adding up to the Bacolod banking scene, does that mean that most Bacolodnons now put more emphasis on their savings as before?:) What i know is that, the loans business is the lifeline of Bacolod's banking/financing community. Loans contribute a great deal of command in the overall income of most banks.:)

Not only that, because of growing establishments many people do their transactions online, banks also gain profits from big companies who use them for payroll to thier employees, and also foreigners exchange their dollar account. So tibatiba naman ni ang mga banks.

^^Thats so nice to hear. Also, Bacolod's upbeat economy should be well complimented with government incentives to lure more businesses other than what are present at the moment. Thats why i think the conversion of the old Bacolod airport into an ecozone will be the best legacy this administration has to offer to the people of Bacolod. More business, more jobs. Everybody happy.:)

the economy is certainly upbeat but let us remember that this hasn't been proven yet as sustainable and quantifiable growth. for that to be proven, we would still have to wait for a few more years. yes, the initial upbeat tempo indicates activity however, we have to be reminded that most of what's happening in Bacolod is cause and effect from other national, pacific regional and in a broader sense, US markets. and, as seen by the recent slump of the dollar versus peso and euro, anything (knock on wood) can really happen.

suffice it to say that we should work towards long term sustainability and not be immediately deluded by all the construction activity we see. truth of the matter is, the construction activity we see in Bacolod can be attributed largely to Bacolod-Tsinoy money. net, the money doesn't fully trickle down AS OF YET to the masses ;)

as for banking, here's my personal indicator (personal ko lang ini ha)....for as long as there is no HSBC in Bacolod, then Bacolod has not arrived :)

Correct, nothings constant especially the economy. But as long as there is stable jobs for everyone, i think bacolodnons will be able to survived.
May be its not yet the right time for HSBC to locate here, but, who knows maybe their already checking our place or probably next on their lists. CITI bank is already here though. So lets just hope for the best. :):)

Meg, point taken. And my personal gauge naman yah regarding the "real" upbeat of Bacolod's economy is the buying power of not only the middle class but most importantly the so called C-D-E market of Bacolod. Btw migo SugarBoy, Citibank(savingsbank) now has a branch in there. Isn't that an indicator already? I presume, Citibank is bigger compared to HSBC.:)

Citibank is big but it has its woes. Last month, it lost its global CEO for its large exposure in the US subprime mess. HSBC is more conservative in its dealings which for me indicates stability.

I don't know if Citibank has a replacement for its CEO.

Anyway, I agree with you Jeff, until ang ordinaryo nga tawo makahambal kun kumustahon mo nga "maayo gid to/inday, indi na kami pigado" . Then kabalo na kita, maayo na gid ang ekonomiya. ;)

yes that's true. the losses though are varied. for some, they were hit bigtime. for others, minimal. so, what can we learn from this? let's not be all agog with the immediate developments we see. am glad for Bacolod but we will have to be more cautious in these uncertain times. indi ta lang tani pag-waldason ang short term gains coz lawig pa ni ang byahe. ;)
