Spanish firm to invest
$200M for RP biofuels

A Spanish biodiesel leader in Europe is planning to invest $200 million in the Philippines to develop at least 100,000 hectares of land into jatropha plantations to be used as feedstock for biofuel facilities, the Department of Agriculture said over the weekend.

The Bionor Transformacion S.A. disclosed its plans to invest in the country through a memorandum of agreement signed recently between AME Bionergy Corp. and the Philippine Agricultural Development and Commercial Corp., Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said.

AME, appointed the key integrator for Bionor in the Philippines, is tasked to identify suitable jatropha plantation sites, consolidate lands, organize and train farm labor, use appropriate cultivation and agronomic practices, organize local support to install plantation infrastructure, and study the cost structure for production, the DA said.

PADCC will assist AME and mobilize the resources of the DA's agencies and bureaus and financial institutions.

The MOA between AME and PADCC was signed last November 16 by AME president Eugenio Puyat II and PADCC president Marriz Agbon.

Yap said Bionor's main thrust is to develop feedstock plantations worldwide using raw materials that do not compete with the food sector and do not lead to deforestation.

This is why Bionor is tapping jatropha, a non-food crop, to support the requirements of its refineries, he said.

Bionor is operating two biodiesel plants in Spain and Italy with a combined output of 125,000 metric tons and constructing an additional five plants in Spain and Brazil that will generate an additional 900,000 MT of capacity in 2008 and in the first quarter 2009.*

Wow Bacolod City is doing great! Congratulations! Truly deserves to be one of the best cities in the Philippines.

I've been there last October, for Masskara Festival. Grabe, dami tao tapos with matching smiles.. smiles... smiles everywhere. City of Smiles nga. Marami ring establishments at syempre food.

One more thing na lang at magiging progressive lalo ang city ay ang AIRPORT. I do hope na January na buksan ito. I'm sure many tourists flocking in.

Btw, I don't speak Hiligaynon. But i love hearing my Iloilo and Bacolod friends speaking it.

Multimillion flyover for Bacolod shelved (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2007/dec/03/yehey/prov/20071203pro4.html)

BACOLOD City: Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Monico Puentevella confirmed the supposed construction of a multimillion flyover project for Bacolod City was temporarily stalled by the office of the Department of Works and Highways (DPWH).

Puentevella said the project which will be constructed along the busy intersection of Lacson-Burgos Streets and Lacson-Benigno Aquino Drive will have to wait pending the result of the investigation by the DPWH.

“The reason why I was invited by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to join with her trip to Europe was for me to meet and talk to the English contractor of the flyover projects,” he said.

The lawmaker wanted to be clarified about the reported substandard materials being used in the project, which apparently was the reason why a similar flyover project in Iloilo City had cracks and defects. The said project that was supposed to be completed and inaugurated in October is not yet operational.

The London-based contractor was awarded multiple contracts for the Tulay ng Pangulo project of President Arroyo in different sites around the country.

i made them as an example to make a point that "bacolodnons" in general (not only yung mga kaibigan ko) arent like some of the people here in SSC-BCD..get my drift? kasi baka akalain ninyo im criticizing the city and the entire population (which i was accused na rin dati)

And so it goes. It was not just Iloilo that was affected by this controversy, it had a domino effect all the way to Negros and other cities which are receipients of the Tulay ng Pangulo Program.

Why didn't they checked Mabey and Johnson Co's track record before the Philippine goverment grants them the contract? Pumuluyo ang naga-dala sang kalisud. :ohno:

^^ Recollect Education. I read the history of the Bacolod Diocese by Modesto Sa-onoy and read that Negros (after the Jesuit expulsion in 1700's) Occidental was handled by Agustinian Recollects. Is it true that Talisay's parish is the only remaining Recollect parish in the Diocese of Bacolod?

La Consolacion College Bacolod

Eighty-eight years after she was instituted, La Consolacion College Bacolod has gone a long, long way. Since her foundation in 1919, she has blossomed into one of the most prestigious schools in Region 6.

As proof of her commitment to the highest standards of academic excellence, La Consolacion College Bacolod has achieved notable records in board examinations for architects where her graduates had been 1st placers, at other times 2nd, 3rd or a 4th but more often 100 percent passers in the Licensure Examinations for Architects given by the government throughout the Philippines. She is the only school in the region to offer a free and paid international practicum training program for hospitality management, tourism, and commerce students. And just as any prominent colleges ad universities in the country, she has by the same token produced notable civic officials who are now serving the communities here and abroad. All these feats and more have propelled LCCB to a stature as one of the country’s top performing educational institutions.

Even more, LCC Bacolod values sterling education beyond standards. This is proven by her efforts of accrediting curricular programs from the basic education department to the select programs in the college department by the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (PAASCU).

Structurally, La Consolacion College Bacolod has improved dramatically. The rapid growth in population of her students was followed by an increasing demand for improvement of school facilities. The college now has exclusive campuses for her School of Architecture, Fine Arts and Interior Design and for the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management. A swim center has also been established. A five-storey hotel building of eminent standard was built for the actual training and formation of HRM and Tourism students. The Mother Consuelo Barceló Activities Center is the latest of these architectural masterpieces and a legacy of the present administrators to the future clientele.

LCCB has proven herself as a reputable institution. Her Education Training Department has produced teachers, supervisors and superintendents not only for the Province but also nationwide. Not to be outdone is the fact that six awardees of the Metrobank Most Outstanding Teachers of the Philippines all came from LCCB (Vigie Cu-1984; Judith Verdadero-1992; Lina Sedonio-1993; Cecilia Locsin Nava-1994; Benito Verdadero-1995; and Josephine Uy Demerre-1996). This prestigious national recognition given to LCCB’s former students is a testimony to her excellent educational standard.

LCC Bacolod’s existence for the past 88 years is a witness of its fidelity to the mission especially in the Christian formation of the youth of Negros and the entire country. Tomorrow, she will stand as it is today. As long as there is one single LCCian with a heart to love and the will to serve; as long as there are competent and dedicated people who believe in the ideals and spirit of our Foundresses, LCC Bacolod will always be a dynamic Christian Community of learning, actively involved in the pursuit of "a Nationalist Education for Faith and Justice Toward a Societal Transformation."

How are you Gear X welcome to Bacolod the city of smile

And so it goes. It was not just Iloilo that was affected by this controversy, it had a domino effect all the way to Negros and other cities which are receipients of the Tulay ng Pangulo Program.

Why didn't they checked Mabey and Johnson Co's track record before the Philippine goverment grants them the contract? Pumuluyo ang naga-dala sang kalisud. :ohno:

Ayala Land loves Bacolod
Property developer giant Ayala Land Inc., wants Bacolod City as their partner in BPO building project. This is an indication that the ICT industry in the City of Smiles is in total bloom (Congratulations to Con. Jocelle Batapa - Sigue, Bacolod ICT Team Leader) and it also means more job oppurtunity.

USLS MassComm
reaps top honors

The St. La Salle Mass Communications Department gained unprecedented recognition when its publication, The LEAD, won two of the three major awards in the 2007 College Press Conference held in Iloilo City Friday last week, a press release from event organizers said.

The LEAD also won its second Graciano Lopez-Jaena Award for excellence in campus journalism in three years, the award being presented by the organizing Philippine Information Agency by virtue of its winning the two trophies – Best College Magazine and Best Departmental Publication – for the second consecutive year.

Taking the Best Newspaper award was LIFELINE, the publication of the College of Nursing of West Visayas State University . More than 40 college publications participated in the competition, said Elsa Subong, PIA regional training officer.

The LEAD had earlier won two Graciano Lopez-Jaena trophies for excellence in campus journalism in 2005, after winning three-years-in-a-row the Best College Newspaper and Best Departmental Publication award, the press release said.

The USLS MassComm paper won the two top trophies this year after winning the Best News, Best Editorial, Best Features and Best Sports pages and finishing second in the Best Magazine layout category.

LEAD Editors Adrian Bobe, Floredeliz Mahinay, Karen Vargas, Kate Bernardo and senior editor Carrie Franz Mendoza received the trophies from PIA national and regional officials.

In individual writing competitions, The LEAD writers won five medals with Aries Cariño winning first in Filipino copyreading and third in news writing; Mahinay, third in English copyreading; as well as Ann Margaret Echarri and Alexander Cuyoca, also third place in English editorial and cartooning, respectively.

Echarri, a MassComm senior, was also declared Miss WV College Press Conference and received the best in Interview and Miss Personality special awards.

The LEAD delegation was accompanied by Allen Del Carmen, publication adviser, the press release added.*

Was in Bacolod last weekend. It's a nice city. Took a Jeepney ride and roamed around the city. Nice malls and infrastructure. Hope the new airport will open soon. Anyway I lost my cellphone in Robinsons habang pasakay ng jeep. Medyo malungkot but it happens everywhere right? :ohno:

It was a star studded trip. I stayed in the same hotel as Donita Rose then rode the plane flying back to Manila with Cong. Iggy Arroyo, and ahem.. his friend Grace Ibuna and also Grace's daughter to Gabby Concepcion, Gabrielle Concepcion.. :bash:

I've been there last October, for Masskara Festival. Grabe, dami tao tapos with matching smiles.. smiles... smiles everywhere. City of Smiles nga. Marami ring establishments at syempre food.

One more thing na lang at magiging progressive lalo ang city ay ang AIRPORT. I do hope na January na buksan ito. I'm sure many tourists flocking in.

But again, even if call centers recruit en masse, it doesn't mean its for everyone. Eventually, most of the agents resign within few months time. That is why Dmist calls it "instant noodle jobs".

I'm very happy with our downtown area. Bustling with city life and trade yet its still very clean and walang polusyon. Not typical of a busy city. in a Phil setting. Its orderly and walang mga bad elements lurking around. Just plain trade and business.

^^ well my friend if you ask me about our downtown, all i can say is that, its not new but its clean and well maintained. Good job to all street sweepers and painters that maintained the downtown beautiful.

you are right boy negros, kahit medyo luma na ang downtown area, pero kitang kita naman ang linis ng streets, at ang sikip na esp ngayong holiday season, kaya i dont feel like going to downtown minsan, i always feel dizzy sa dami ng tao

Mayor hopes for brgy support
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said he would prefer that the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials in the Sangguniang Panlungsod would not oppose or block the policies of the administration.

“We need officials who will be reasonable and cooperative because the barangays are supposed to be part of an administration,” he said.

“We are in a period in our history as a city where we are experiencing unprecedented growth,” Leonardia said. If there is disunity between the city government and the barangays the progress of the city will be hampered, he said.

Leonardia said, “We want to sustain the momentum and that calls for barangay support and cooperation.”

Asked for his preference for Sangguniang Kabataan Federation and Association of Barangay Captains presidents in Bacolod City , Leonardia said politicians are not supposed to openly endorse any candidate.

When informed by the media during a press conference yesterday that Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella has endorsed Barangay Captain Jose Antonio Gensoli of Vista Alegre and SK chairman Jason Olivar of Brgy. Pahanocoy, the mayor said he believes the one for ABC president is the incumbent, Barangay Captain Diosdado Valenzuela of Brgy. Estefania.

Valenzuela took his oath of office Friday before Leonardia as ABC president.

Leonardia said under the ABC Constitution, when the barangay president (Councilor Arturo Parreño) graduates, the vice president is supposed to take over. That is the case of Valenzuela who was the ABC vice president, he said. Automatically he will represent the ABC in the Sangguniang Panlungsod until a successor is elected.

The ABC election is on Dec. 29, while the SK election is on Dec. 6.

Leonardia said Valenzuela is a third termer barangay captain and has performed well in his barangay and also won convincingly in the last election. “Taking into account all these, I believe he is the right man for the job,” he said.

Meanwhile, Leonardia said SK chairman Kevin Daniel Ramos of Brgy. Granada has a very good relationship with the SK which is vital for the harmony of the group. He said Ramos is a relative of his and the son of Councilor Dindo Ramos.

Leonardia clarified that he is not campaigning for them but is only stating his opinion.

He said he has reminded the SK chairmen that this is a crucial time for the SK. He said if they perform well they might make the officials, who are proposing for the abolition of the SK, change their mind.

“I hope this set will be able to overturn any negative perception of the SK,” Leonardia said.*CGS

Signs FEATURES

When a group of businessmen come up with a slogan that says “Stop complaining, do something”, call themselves “Bantay Banwa”, and then donate and install 77 International Traffic Signs all over the city, I get the impression that its not because they want to give back to society, its because they, like so many others who have contented themselves with silently grumbling about the traffic, are fed up at the shameful traffic situation in the city.
Bacolod has the excellent, wide roads that most cities in this country could only dream of. It has traffic lights in most of the major intersections. Thanks to concerned citizens, it now has international traffic signs sprinkled all over the city. And yet, everybody except the people in charge of it, can see that the traffic situation is deteriorating instead of improving. They have the infrastructure. They have the tools. They even have donations from Bantay Banwa. All that's left for the people in charge of this problem is to grow balls.

^^ @NG: I think Bacolod's traffic woes are still manageable. And actions were taken already. I noticed(last July2007) traffic lights were already installed in most major intersections of the city. I was even amazed that brgy. mansilingan have it also particularly at bangga Cory(is the spelling correct?).:)

yap!!!! thats right, they have their own traffic lights now. :) the only problem here is the loading and unloading zones and to be particular about it...the enforcers doesnt know how to handle this. I think they should be strict in implementing traffic rules in the city. Drivers doesnt really care when they get caught.

The most pasaway drivers are from BATA, PTA. TAYTAY, ALIJIS, MANDALAGAN and BANAGO.

i just hope that they will push through with the plans of moving the south and north bound terminals away from the city in order to decongest the traffic situation.

I think the solution to this loading/unloading thing is to impose stricter and higher fines to drivers. If caught twice, suspend its license. All payments to such fines be made thru an official bank(this is to avoid red tape). I think in this manner, commuters have little choice but to alight in designated loading/unloading stations only. :)

New Airport to Open in Jan, 2008

By Teresa Ellera-Dulla

The New Bacolod-Silay Airport in Barangay Bagtic, Silay City is opening on the second week of January 2008.

Silay City Mayor Jose “Oti” Montelibano said, the airline companies asked for the postponement of the opening that was earlier scheduled before Christmas this year. During this holiday season, business is at its peak and the airline companies would have difficulty to transfer at this time, he said. After her visit in Europe, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is supposed to proceed to Silay for the inauguration and opening of the new airport, Monte-libano bared.

The new airport has been completed July this year and navigation tests were already conducted. Montelibano revealed, the airport is ready for operation anytime. He, however, said that there is a delay in the construction of the 2.5-kilometer McKinley access road due to bad weather. The contractor reported its accomplishment at 800 meters a day of cementing the road.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Air Force base in Mandurriao, Iloilo will soon transfer to Silay City.

Montelibano bared that the transfer of the Air Force base to Silay is due to the its closure in Mandurriao. It will be located adjacent to the New Bacolod-Silay Airport and will occupy about 3 hectares as it will accommodate air force helicopters and Nomad planes. He said Governor Joseph Marañon gave him the authority to negotiate and finalize the project.
Montelibano said that having an Air Force base in the province will make better access in times of rescue operations.
“That is why we are working hard in order to materialize the plan,” Montelibano said, since the air force has budgetary constraints to acquire lots for its base, the Provincial Government of Negros Occ. and City government of Silay are willing to assist them.*

its better all the sugar trucks prohibited to ride along that Carlos Hilado Highway coz its give only congested the traffic along that street specially during the peak hours and also avoid the street damage...its better only all the loading trucks are allowed to ride from brgy alijis via brgy mansilingan and murcia town going to the northern sugar centrals...hope the DPWH and the city continue to tackle the job of making sure that the road will be passable not only by cane trucks but also by smaller vehicles

Enjoy Christmas in Bacolod

Home. Nothing can be more spectacular than coming home and living the Christmas spirit in the bosom of family and friends. But more than just home, Bacolod has a certain allure that a local like me could never place her finger into yet finds visitors and tourists prattling about it. Bacolod is the capital of the province of Negros Occidental, the other half of the sock-shaped island in the central part of the Philippine archipelago. The city is not as fast-paced and urbanized as Metro Manila or Cebu. However, malls and coffee shops are slowly sprouting around the city that brings Bacolodnons to buzzing and moving. Known for its sugar produce, Bacolod City and Negros Occidental boast of the warm hospitality and sweet nature of its people. Even when the sugar industry went down in the 80’s, the people found a way to cheer up and celebrate amidst the economic crisis. Locals would love to show you around and serve their best and sweetest delicacies. Though Bacolod City is small, the combination of its economic progress and the conventional, tranquil ambiance always charm tourists and visitors. The small side streets are always filled with colorful jeepneys that have different designs from the traditional ones found in Manila. The downtown area has a public plaza and market where people sell various items especially during the holiday season. The sidewalk of the plaza fronting the Cathedral has rows of thrift shops selling clothes, bags, shoes and stuffs that can be given as Christmas gifts. Large speakers are sometimes placed at the sidewalk with loud Christmas music to attract shoppers. During the Christmas season, families get together over lunch or dinner. Christmas lights and decorations are found in every homes, establishments, and parks. The Capitol building looks majestic with the lagoon and colorful lights in the foreground. For a restful holiday season, Bacolod is a welcome place to locals coming home and to tourists wanting to have a feel of the fresh, sweet Negros air.

Quick Tips/Suggestions:

If you plan to spend the holidays in Bacolod, book your hotel and plane tickets two months in advance to get lower rates and discount. Due to the influx of travelers, local airlines give promos in advance. There are many good getaways within and around Bacolod. Check the local tourism office for package tours that will bring you to nearby Silay City, Mambukal hot springs or the local beaches. Though the people can easily understand and speak English, it would still be good to learn the basic local dialect. A number of ATMs are in Bacolod city but if you are traveling to other towns within the province, it is safe to have a few pesos in hand. It would come handy to have a mobile phone with you as there may be places without pay telephone.

Best Way to Get Around:

From Manila, Bacolod can be reached by air or by sea. Flights from Manila to Bacolod are about four to six in a day and may take 45 minutes only. Trips from Cebu are shorter. A ship ride from Manila however may take 20-24 hours, not ideal for those who are following an itinerary. Book your tickets a month or two in advance to have cheaper rates and to ensure seats. When December comes, most flights are full because of people coming home and spending their vacation in Bacolod. There are many taxis and jeepneys plying within Bacolod city and nearby towns. But they become infrequent by night fall. Be sure to check the jeepney routes before you load them. However, some places within the downtown area can be reached by walking.

SUV111 & BoyNegro$: SSC-Bacolod heroes.:okay::applause::applause::applause: Making a lot of Bacolodnons closer to home, even thru pictures and insights only, this Christmas season truly more than meets the eye. We may not even know each other that much, yet WE are much closer than expected. Our virtual barkadahan is now more of a family affair than just being fellow forumers. Seing Bacolod in pictures thru your lenses are the best Christmas presents this season. We're so happy and proud of you guys. Our sincere "salamat" is the least we can say. Now my noche buena will be great. I'll just eat my stuff and stare at all these magnificent pictures shared by these "heroes" of SSC. Merry Christmas and a prosperous Bacolod this 2008.:)

thank you jeff...its really a heart warming message. I know we havent seen each other yet, but the true blood of a Bacolodnon really runs through our veins. I even told boynegros that this thread doesnt only promote our city but also develops friendship. We may have our argueements at times but still...theres always a room for us to forgive and in the end...develop friendship. :)

^^ This one is a great place to party especially on weekends. But if your budget is a bit off, then theres a Shell Select just across this gimik area. And its also home to some of Bacolod's contemporary art works. This one is actually easy to most peeps residing in the north side of Bacolod as well as the ones in Talisay & Silay.:)

Hi Guys,

Share ko sa inyo ang mga experiences namin ng kapatid ko sa Bacolod. Actually, we posted some of pics sa website na http://grapesky.multiply.com/
Marami sana kaming kukuhanin kaso bad trip ang digi cam. Low bat. :)

Eto nga pala ang preview dun sa blog namin:

1. Syempre, hindi namin malilimutan ang tao doon. Nice and warm people sila. Kaya nga City of Smiles.

2. Ang lalawak ng daan. 20 meters daw yun. Kahit saan ka magpunta, pwede kang magpatintero.

3. The regal names of street and places. From Mandalagan to Mansilingan hehehe. From Alijis to Punta Taytay and etc. Name ng street sosyal din. From Araneta to Lacson Bata to San Sebastian name it.

4. CHICKEN INASAL. PIYAYA. BUTTERSCOTCH, MASCOVADO SUGAR. Lahat yan masasarap. Nabili namin yan sa Bong Bong's Piyaya at yung Chicken naman sa eevr famous Manokan Country.

5. For the first time in my life: Walang Sign board ang mga jeepneys. Kaya bago ka sumakay. Check the map or ask someone the route. Btw, wala palang Rotonda ang city. Puro square lots at kanto.

6. We checked in at Bacolod Executive Inn. Simple lang ang hotel pero mura lang. 1,250 lang per night sa Double Executive Room. Mura na Malinis pa. :)

Dami ko pang kwento about exciting experiences with matching frustrations ko dyan sa Bacolod. I'll post another one soon. For the mean time. Good Morning!

Share ko sa inyo ang mga experiences namin ng kapatid ko sa Bacolod. Actually, we posted some of pics sa website na http://grapesky.multiply.com/
Marami sana kaming kukuhanin kaso bad trip ang digi cam. Low bat. :)

Eto nga pala ang preview dun sa blog namin:

1. Syempre, hindi namin malilimutan ang tao doon. Nice and warm people sila. Kaya nga City of Smiles.

2. Ang lalawak ng daan. 20 meters daw yun. Kahit saan ka magpunta, pwede kang magpatintero.

3. The regal names of street and places. From Mandalagan to Mansilingan hehehe. From Alijis to Punta Taytay and etc. Name ng street sosyal din. From Araneta to Lacson Bata to San Sebastian name it.

4. CHICKEN INASAL. PIYAYA. BUTTERSCOTCH, MASCOVADO SUGAR. Lahat yan masasarap. Nabili namin yan sa Bong Bong's Piyaya at yung Chicken naman sa eevr famous Manokan Country.

5. For the first time in my life: Walang Sign board ang mga jeepneys. Kaya bago ka sumakay. Check the map or ask someone the route. Btw, wala palang Rotonda ang city. Puro square lots at kanto.

6. We checked in at Bacolod Executive Inn. Simple lang ang hotel pero mura lang. 1,250 lang per night sa Double Executive Room. Mura na Malinis pa. :)

Dami ko pang kwento about exciting experiences with matching frustrations ko dyan sa Bacolod. I'll post another one soon. For the mean time. Good Morning!

Whoa! Thanks sa lahat na nag-comment regarding my experiences dyan sa City of Smiles. I'll be back by next time, in time for MAsskara Festival.

Have you seen the blog / pics? You may post it here for sharing. Kaso, mga amateur shots lang po. He he he  http://grapesky.multiply.com/

Here are some of our observations:

1. Sorry guys ha... Sa Bacolod kasi, nakikita ko kasi ang difference sa Mayayaman at mahihirap. Para bang may boundaries between them. They were so called hacienderos or mga anak ng mayayaman roaming around Bacolod to have fun. But on the other way around, I saw some street children especially on Downtown begging for food. Yung kapatid ko naawa and we gave what we ate (piyaya from Bongbong's) truly you will see the boundaries.

2. Dahil hindi kami marunong mag-Hiligaynon. Another problem is languange barrier. Sorry ulit guys ha. We have many experiences with jeepney drivers there. Since there were no sign boards, we dared to asked them about the said route. We asked in Tagalog but they replied to us in Hiligaynon. OMG, parang lalong maliligaw kami ah  Some drivers smiled back to us na parang hindi nya mai-express in Tagalog. Diyan ako natuwa. Smile parin kahit nahihirapan. Thank God for some taxi drivers and some students in USLS, UNP and WNC, they were so great in pointing some directions.

3. I really love your nightlife. Maraming establishments, from Cafe Bobs to Figaro, to Manokan Country to JT Chicken inato, name it. Sarap pa ng food. What a wonderful food trip.

4. Daming schools. I also learned that Region 6 (wherein Negros Occ is one of the provinces there) produced best students and graduates dahil nga sa reputation ng mga univ and colleges. USLS, WNC, UNO - Recoletos, LCC, Riverside College at marami pang iba. Kaya ang Bacolod, karamihan ang population ay mga kabataan. :)

5. Malls. From SM to Robinson. Ang SM maliit lang pero malawak ang area niya sa labas. Ang Robhinson naman, malaki at puno ng establishments. Pero mas makikita mong bago ang SM kasi this year nagbukas compared to Robinsons. Sorry guys, hindi ko napuntahan ang Gaisano. Nagmamadali kasi ang kapatid ko that time.

Marami pa akong kwento. Pag balik ko mamaya. My unforgettable experience at weirdest moments while in the City of Smiles. Till then Good Afternoon! :)

@Smile & @BoyNegro$: I just noticed that most new buildings in Bacolod are more glassy. THOUGH not so high(mostly 4 storeys), it adds up to the modern ambience of Bacolod's building density. All pics are nicely done. Thanks to both of you. All praises here THOUGH.

If you've been to Makati inside a car, you'll always see people begging on the street especially near EDSA corner McKinley. It's so near Forbes and Dasmarinas village but there are still a lot of poor people. It's not just in Bacolod but in almost any urban area in the country.

Believe it or not, there are tons of students that come to study in Bacolod from other provinces in the region. :)

I'm happy you enjoyed your stay in Bacolod.

The future smiles on the city of smiles
From sugarcane to BPOs—investment opportunities abound in Bacolod
By Karen B. Bitagun

The half a million residents of Bacolod City, the “City of Smiles” of the Philippines, have many reasons to feel good about their city. Bacolod has already been inducted into the “Clean and Green Hall of Fame” after being cited by the national government as the country’s cleanest and greenest highly urbanized city in 1997, 1998, 2000, 2001, and 2002. In 2006, it was named the most child-friendly city in Western Visayas, and its local government was recognized for being the most business-friendly in the Visayas. The year before, Bacolod was chosen as the most competitive city in the midsize category by the Asian Institute of Management, while the city government was awarded the Apolinario Mabini Award for the “Local Government Unit of the Year” by the Philippine Foundation for the Rehabilitation of the Disabled because of its disabled-friendly services and projects. The city has also been hailed as one of the most livable cities in the country, boasting of a low crime incidence rate and a very high crime solution rate of 97%.

Regional Gateway

The city’s name comes from the Ilonggo word bakolod, which means “stone hill.” Located in the northwest of the Visayan province of Negros Occidental on the island of Negros, Bacolod City is accessible from Manila by air and water transportation. By air, it is just 55 minutes away from Manila. The airport is a mere 4 kilometers from the city proper, but before the end of the year it will be relocated to a new and bigger facility in Silay City, 24 kilometers north of Bacolod. By sea, Bacolod is an 18-hour boat ride from Manila and can be reached through the seaports in Banago, the Reclamation Area, and Pulupandan.

Bacolod, which covers an area of 161.45 square kilometers, is the gateway to the 12 component cities and 19 towns of Negros Occidental and to the neighboring province of Negros Oriental. It is bound on the north by Talisay City, on the east by the municipality of Murcia, on the south by Bago City, and on the west by the Guimaras Strait. Due to its strategic location, Bacolod has become the commercial, trade and industrial, agricultural, and even ICT hub of the region.

Economic Activity

Bacolod is alive with economic activity. Trade between the city and other Visayan towns and cities in the provinces of Negros Oriental, Iloilo, Bohol, and Cebu is thriving. Goods from Bacolod reach Camiguin Island, Cagayan de Oro, Dapitan, Dipolog, Surigao, and Zamboanga in Mindanao. Beyond domestic trade, products from Bacolod and the rest of the province are also transported to Manila and on to overseas markets.

Sugar is still the lifeblood of the province, which supplies more than half of the country’s sugar needs. In Bacolod, as of 2003, 7,216 hectares of the city’s 8,560 hectares of agricultural land were still planted to sugarcane. Meanwhile, 915 hectares were devoted to rice, 120 to assorted vegetables, 100 to coconut, 43 to banana, and 34 to corn.

The fresh and processed export products that Bacolod is most famous for include refined sugar, muscovado sugar, fresh green bananas, frozen black tiger prawns, squid and cuttlefish, pasteurized crabmeat, and canned sardines and milkfish. It has also been very successful in promoting its exports of furniture, home furnishings, and holiday decor made from wood, shell, and other indigenous materials, as well as garments.

Business Opportunities

For investors looking for areas of growth in the city, the emerging investment opportunities are in power generation, cutflowers and ornamentals, travel and support services, sports and ecotourism, mass housing, and ICT. The business process outsourcing industry, especially the call center sector, has already discovered the enormous potential of Bacolod.

With its six universities and colleges, the city produces about 5,000 graduates every year to fill and replenish the pool of potential agents. This—coupled with the cheap cost of living, stable infrastructure, and the local government’s continued efforts to improve the ease of doing business in the city—has drawn four call center firms into setting up shop here since the beginning of 2005. Focus Communications, IO Asia, Teletech, and Teleperformance all have operations in Bacolod, with the last being the largest with more than 500 seats. Convergys Philippines and other contact centers have expressed plans to set up in Bacolod as well. The city already has four Philippine Economic Zone Authority-accredited IT parks in anticipation of the requirements of the booming BPO industry.

Thus, as Bacolod City strives to keep its position as a one of the country’s leading economic centers down south, expect it not only to draw on its traditional agricultural products and staple industries, but also to ride on promising investment prospects grounded on the dynamic and competitive skills of the smiling people of the city.

I'm not supposed to disclose this but we started somewhere at P12K in Cebu. I don't know about the rates for Western Visayas though. But anyway, depending on the account that you'll get into, the basic is P12K but if you've performed well, then it may reach as high as P15K a month or sometimes P20k. I'm just sharing my experience from my former employer, hehe!! :D

The Off Shore Bar at the Metro Dome, Araneta-Alunan Streets, had a soft opening and blessing recently. As we walked into the impressive entrance, we were struck by the stone-cold gorgeous design of this most unusual bar. The interior designer, Raymond Fuentes, informed us that the concept is like being on an off shore oil rig somewhere in the North Sea (!). What a fantastic idea!

On hand to welcome us were the owners Grant “Jake” Purvis (an Englishman) and his charming wife Michelle Gasataya. We went up to the mezzanine with its attractive metal railings through the quaint circular starway. The place was packed with the beautiful fun-loving people of Bacolod who enjoyed the delicious pica-pica and the cold drinks which flowed all night. What a wonderful place to relax after a grueling day! from visayandailystar.com
