menina, oh the Pats are great. Do you like them too? They should keep it up and it will be a fun superbowl sunday come feb. what do you think of the teams season? With the red sox' win in the world series and the pats attacking...i just wish the celtics would at least be in the finals. :-)

Boston is having an AMAZING year for their sports teams! Grabe gid! I bet the Celtics make it. Garnett is one of my fave bball players before pa when he was with the twolves! One of the best players IMO. I watched the Pats' game against Baltimore, super exciting! The last one against the Steelers wasn't shown here, kailinit gani. As for me, I'm a Chargers fan :D They aren't having a great season, but still hoping for the best.

Actually coffee shops are doing good business here. People from Bacolod just want to drink coffee and any other refreshing drinks and doesnt mind how much the drink would cost. :) hehehehe :)

Ako lang siguro ga mind :D 2 drinks at Starbucks is almost a good steak at Carlo's. Hehe. Just goes to show how kuripot I am!:D

Those cane loaded trucks are not only making the pavement at the circumferencial highway in total dismay, they also pose a bigger threat to the safety of most pedestrians. Just imagine if these trucks will ply the area at sometimes over speed limits.

Ah yes, and they often break down in the middle of the night, and park by the side without having reflectors or anything to warn other vehicles that they are there. A family friend of ours died when his car crashed into a parked sugarcane truck along Circumferential :ohno: Also, they don't secure their cargo and lots of sugarcane fall off, and get run over and rot. Smells really bad too :D

Thanks gali ninja kid, sugarfreak, and resident photographer SUV for the welcome! :)

Gmorning all

really meg? in the whole visayas or in western visayas only? siguro kasi hindi concentrated ang progress in Bacolod City alone. it spreads out to other towns and neighboring cities so hindi masyado congested ang Bacolod.. plus pa yung good planning ng streets and paglalagay ng order sa traffic like yung mga routes ng PUJs, etc..

Is Bacolod prone to earthquakes? Kasi ang pagkakalam ko may ilang lugar sa pilipinas na hindi ganong tinatamaan ng lindol kasi lamayo sila sa mga tectonic plates? ^^

fraulein, we rarely have earthquakes in bacolod, or negros in general. I guess we have strategically we've been blessed. We seldom get the super typhoons like leyte and samar, and we don't seem to have a lot of flooding.

NEWS AT SEA GAMES:

AT SEA GAMES
Five Negros boxers
walk out from finals
BY CARLA GOMEZ
;
They've had enough.

And six Filipino boxers, including five from Negros Occidental, stood up and made sure the boxing world would take notice.

Dismayed by perceived pro-Thailand decisions in the 24 th Southeast Asian Games boxing competitions, Bago City-born pugs Junie Tizon, Junel Cantancio and Joegin Ladon, Cadiz City's Godfrey Castro and Orlando Tacuyan Jr., who has roots in Bacolod City, “retired” from their respective gold medal matches against Thailand fighters.

Only 2000 Sydney Olympian Larry Semillano, also of Bago City , bravely finished his match with Thai Olympic super lightweight champion Manus Boomjumnong.

It was another futile effort, however, as the Thai prevailed, 10-4, to win the gold medal at the Tumbon Mueangpug Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima , Thailand .

Castro, a bronze medalist in the Asian Games last year, showed up for his flyweight showdown with former world champion Somjit Jongjohor only to raise his hands in the air as a sign of surrender at the start of the first round.

Cantancio also retired at the beginning of the first round of his bantamweight duel with Thailand 's Woorapoj Petchkoom, the same fighter whom Bacoleño Joan Tipon defeated on his way to the Asian Games gold medal last year.

A report from the Philippine contingent said the boxers were under orders from RP chef de mission and Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, deputies Ritchie Garcia and Julian Camacho and boxing head Manny Lopez.

The officials cooked up the plan Wednesday night, following the surprisingly one-sided defeats of the Filipino female boxers in their respective gold medal matches.

Among them was lightweight Mitchel Martinez, a standout from Bacolod and Bago City , who bowed to her Thai opponent, 11-21.

Following Cantancio and Castro's retirement, Taiwanese C.K. Woo, the world amateur boxing president, stepped in and asked the Filipino officials to order the remaining four boxers to continue fighting.

The same report from the Philippine delegation said the proceedings were suspended for nearly 45 minutes as Woo met with the RP contingent's leaders.

Puentevella reportedly said they had to relent to Woo's appeal as they feared sanctions from the world amateur boxing body.

Despite Woo's assurance of a fair shake, the Filipino fighters reportedly continued to get a raw deal, forcing them to retire, although a bit later into their bouts.

Tacuyan, 19, fought tooth and nail against Adi Sailom but the Thai piled up the points in the second round and before the start of the third and final round, prompting another walkout.

Ladon stopped fighting with one minute, 27 seconds to go in the opening round against Pichai Sayota with the Thai up 5-2.

The outcome opened old scars for Ladon, who was reduced to tears in the 2005 SEA Games in Bacolod City after suffering a controversial setback at the hands of Petchkoom.

Ladon's loss at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum on the night of Dec. 3, 2005 was among the three disputed fights of the competition that was cut short when a riotous crowd pelted debris inside the ring to also protest alleged pro-Thai scoring.

Tizon, a middleweight, and light heavyweight Maximino Tabancura also retired after the second round against Suriya Prasathinpimai and Angkhan Chomphuphuang, respectively.

“We wanted to send a message. This was not against the Thai organizers but at the world body that is in charge of the referees and judges who are officiating here,” Puentevella was quoted as saying.

Puentevella claimed similar incidents have been going on for over the decade, adding that the move was meant for the referees and judges to “shape up”.

Lopez, who is also secretary general of the Asian Boxing Federation, said “Our fighters lost their spirit and courage after witnessing what happened to the women's squad last Wednesday. I believe that our boxers did their best and deserve more than the silver medal that they won that night”.

Lopez pointed out that if flyweight Annie Albania had not won by knockout over a Thai boxer, the Philippines could have gone home without a gold.

“We do not want our boxers to be maltreated but we do not want our country to be dishonored,” Lopez said.

All told, the Filipinos ended up with one gold, 12 silvers, and two bronzes in boxing. The Philippines posted an 8-gold 4-silver 2-bronze output in Bacolod City two years ago.*CPT

Sanggunian OKs 2008 Executive Budget (http://www.negrosdaily.com/?q=dec1307l1)
By Carla N. Cañet

Bacolod is officially a Billionaire by next year following the approval of the P1 billion Executive Budget by the Sangguniang Panlungsod during their 24th regular session.

All of them voted affirmatively except Councilor Napoleon Cordova who is currently abroad.
Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia said that the new budget is up by P245 million or 32.45% over the current year’s budget of P755 million.

(This would mean a per capita of P2,086.91 based on the projected population count of P479,176 for 2008, or an increase of P489.39 vis-a-vis P1,597.52, current year per capita. He believe that they we accomplished much for the benefit of our people and that they have recognized our unwavering commitment to serve, and the achievements that we have accomplished through our collective efforts. This imposes on us the sublime task of providing our constituents the optimum services that we can give. We shall not renege on our solemn duty to give our people the kind of government that they deserve. We cannot vacillate on our commitment to accomplish our grand vision for our beloved city,” Mayor

Leonardia said, He the plea for help of our less fortunate brothers and sisters must not fall on deaf ears. “We must unswervingly continue to support our nutrition, livelihood, housing and relocation programs, for after all, social justice according to President Magsaysay, is that less privileged members of the society should have more food on their tables, more clothes on their backs, and shelter over their heads.” The Sang-gunian’s unwavering support in our vision and mission will go a long way in attaining our collective goals and aspirations, hence the request for the approval of this budget will support our “fast forward” program. Leonardia’s vision 2011 in 2008 — a Fast
Forward program of modern structures — the government center, two flyover projects of the Office of the President, two new hotels, additional relocation sites, new road network, additional traffic lights and more basic services direct to the barangays, programmed for 2011, will already be a reality in 2008.*

SP approves P1B
budget for Bacolod
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod approved on first, second and third reading the proposed 2008 Annual Budget of P1 billion of the city submitted by Mayor Evelio Leonardia, subject to certain colatillas, or conditions.

It also approved on first, second and third reading an appropriation ordinance augmenting the amount of P27.9 million for the extra cash gift of the regular and plantilla casual employees of the city, to be taken from the item “personal services” savings of the various offices of the city.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson yesterday said the old employees, as well as, the members of the SP will get P12,000 each since they were earlier given P5,000 as mid-year bonus, while the new employees including the SP will receive P17,000 each.

The city has about 2,256 regular and plantilla casual employees.

Meanwhile, the 2008 Annual Budget was approved subject to the condition that the Gender and Development fund under the Office of the City Mayor shall be supplemented within the early part of 2008 with an amount not lower than P500 million to augment the same existing items in the General Fund through a supplemental budget or inclusion in the Annual Investment Plan as proposed by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue.

The ordinance addressing priority concerns of the city such as Information and Communications Technology programs, informal sector programs and all other sectors covered by all other ordinances of the SP shall be funded through supplemental budget or inclusion in the AIP for 2008 and shall include paragraph 6.6 of the Department of Budget and Management which mandate projects, programs and activities to be covered in the Gender and Development plan.

Councilor Greg Gasataya also proposed that the list of projects and programs to be recommended by the City Development Council should be subject to the approval of the SP before implementation.

Leonardia said the 2008 annual budget he submitted to the SP shows an increase of P245 million from that of 2007. That is a 32 percent increase, which is unprecedented, he said.

“When I started, we had a budget of P634 million and we targeted to double the budget within our term,” Leonardia said. “That makes us the number one city in Western Visayas in terms of the budget,” he said, adding that the city is “back on track” in WV.

Leonardia had earlier said that the city will have a budget which is 52 percent local income and 48 percent Internal Revenue Allotment.

He thanked Sayson, Councilor Al Victor Espino, the members of the SP and the finance committee for their support and cooperation.

On the other hand, newly-elected Sangguniang Kabataan Federation president Councilor Daniel Kevin Ramos was appointed by the SP as chairman of the Committee on SK Affairs and Sport, and History and Culture. The committee was previously chaired by his predecessor, Marx Louie de la Rosa.*CGS

Bacolod City is in Negros Island with "NO" existing active faults. The nearest we have is Tablas Fault running along Aklan and Antique with splays all down to Miag-ao and San Joaquin, Iloilo. So any major earthquake would usually come from Panay. Faults in Sipalay-Bindoy and Cauayan-Vallehermoso line are only probable active with no recorded activity. But lately we have small quakes occuring along small local faults (seacoasts of Bago City, Cadiz City and between Dumangas-Iloilo- and Silay) with magnitude 2-5 in the richter scale. The only threat (although very minimal) to Bacolod is Kanlaon Volcano, but never in history even airfall ash reached the city since 1866.

Talking bout earthquakes i would just like to add my list of notable disasters in Bacolod City

FIRES:
April -- 1951 - A gigantic fire started from the Central Market ravaged 6-8 city blocks from Gonzaga St. down to Rosario St. it lasted for about 2 days. No deaths reported

TYPHOONS:
TYPHOON AMY (Dec.1951) winds of more than 190 kph and a large storm surge ravaged the coastlines of the city. the storm also hit Cebu and Surigao. Total deaths 991
TYPHOON NITANG (Aug-Sept 1984) hitting the southern and central part of Negros after ravaging Surigao. It destroyed many infrastructures and sugarcane fields ready for harvest. death toll 1,363 with more than 1,500 missing
TYPHOON RUPING (Nov 1990) the most damaging typhoon to hit Bacolod creating a power outage for more than a month, creating major damage to all. A rare occurence of the "eye passage" was experienced with a sudden lull between 8 hours of 200 kph winds
TYPHOON PEPANG (Oct 1995) this storm caught Bacolod unprepared with highwinds and mud-laden floods. About 18 people died in the city.

EARTHQUAKES:
no deaths or damage in the following earthquakes
Feb 1990 - A 6.9 quake in Bohol sent Intensity IV shocks in Bacolod
June 1990 - A 7.1 quake in Culasi, Antique was felt at Intensity V in Bacolod

OUTBREAKS:
the Great 1960's Cholera Epidemic killed hundreds in the city. A mass grave was dug for the dead in front of the Provincial Hospital (now CLMMRH)

MARITIME:
April 22, 1980 - collision of Bacolod-bound M/S Don Juan of Negros Navigation and PNOC's M/T Tacloban at Maestre de Campo, Oriental Mindoro killed about 200 including influential families in Negros
March 2004 - While at Manila Bay, a bomb explosion by terrorists followed by a fire at Superferry 14 bound for Bacolod and Cag de Oro killed 117 people

Besides Tacloban, the company said it would build more malls outside Metro Manila, specifically in Bacolod, Tagaytay, Bulacan, Dumaguete and Davao. Besides the construction of new malls, the property firm said it is also expanding Robinsons Manila and its first mall in Bacolod.

Good Evening Bacolod City! Well, talagang In na In talaga ang Robs sa Bacolod. Good to hear that Gokongwei will likely to build a second mall out there. ^^

I guess they will build another mall after the Robs Place expansion is finished, pero malayo pa siguro nun, maybe a couple of years or more.:)
Anung bagong development sa CDO?

Why not Silay or Talisay? both cities don't have a major shopping mall yet and have a population base bigger than Dumaguete, Roxas, or San Carlos.

It's not primarily based on most populated city that an investor will build a mall. What's more important is that it's based on people/tenants who have money to shop. :)

We're just happy about the strong-willed dedication showed by our city local government towards more progression--the continuous growth and development of our city. Hanjin and Laguindingan Airport so far have been a lyre to our ears. Anyway, you can personally visit our threads @Boynegro$. :)

Shipbuilding? That's great. Your new airport is really nice, mas mahal pa nga kaysa Bacolod and Iloilo (correct me if Im wrong). Hope na mag expand din ang mga international BPO companies sa CDO since your city is very supportive sa ICT development.:):)
I do visit your thread, CDO interest me a lot, hindi pa ako na ka punta dun. Pero you have a wonderful city.:):) Truly The City of Golden Friendship.

You had flattered us @SUV. ^^ Anyway, thanks a lot for your heartfelt welcome here tonight. :)

Well @boynegro$, LIA has become too costly since for many years the ambitious plan has been delayed, so the price of the materials needed and the payment of labor by a certain working company for construction are altogether going up. That's the rationale. About ICT, well hopefully there will be an international company to invest aside of the already eyed national one.

After all if you have time for yourself, why not try to visit our city and have a delight? ^^

Hamilton is a good driver in a great car, lucky him, but I still think Kimi is a better driver. Finally nag daog na sya so I'm really happy for him! Next season looks to be very interesting. Kovalainen is confirmed to drive for McLaren with Lewis. If their car will be as strong as last season's we should also keep our eye on Kovalainen, he's a pretty good driver as well! This is great news for people who want to study cooking! Imagine the savings not only with tuition in Manila, but lodging as well. Good move by La Salle, as culinary schools are becoming quite the rage right now. I think they dedicated the upper part of the Coliseum above the food court for their kitchen, if I'm not mistaken:)

Buit anyway what makes me happy are you guys nga nagapadaku gid sang "bugal" ko about the updates in Bacolod.......he he he hehe.....developments in Bacolod are just getting so fast, I don't know if our "older twin sister" across the strait is happy for this also...he he he he...I believe they always see us as a competitor for a crown they would like to "reclaim"....my sentiments only...no violent reactions ha.....Basta, even we are not the first, the biggest nor the most numerous as others would claim, I believe that whats important is that...we are recognized as the CITY THAT DELIVERS! (we've got what they have, we're just making it better and unique)....

Hey thanks for the welcome, I'm currently in Manila until February next year for a very important event......I will surely miss Christmas in Bacolod again.....haaay 3 years in a row. (we've got what they have, we're just making it better and unique)....

boy musta , I was surprised also with the development.... but its really true and you can see. I can say home of fine dining.

Uy ha, you find Negros Occidental small?....Population-wise we are on the top 5, i just don't know what rank...we are after Cebu prov. which has 3 million plus while Negros Occidental has 2 million plus...he he he he he....."dako gid ta ya "with 13 urban centers (cities)....Sa Western Visayas we are the most populous city with 420,000 plus followed by Iloilo City with about 380,000 plus......Iloilo is just denser because more than 380,000 people are living in a city area just half of Bacolod City...true...bacolod is about 300,000 sq m compared to Iloilo of a little over 150,000 sq m.....what's unique is that daytime crowd in Iloilo City is too big (more than 100,000 in city prop alone) , but mostly go back to the towns after 7 pm:lol::wave:

Why does Robinson's keep on expanding in Negros? The fact is that Negrenses are more into spending a lot for high-end, classy and expensive shopping which Robinson's could offer...:banana2:

I have just noticed .... buildings in Bacolod are so uniquely designed. Not as humongous, towering or super-gigantic but it has "aesthetic" quality. Its comparable to those that I see in Makati (Ayala Center), Bonifacio Global City (Serendra/Bonifacio High), Libis (QC), SM MOA and those at Bay City in Pasay. From our Provincial Capitol, the new Bacolod Gov't Center, establishments along Lacson, East Center, Goldenfields, Araneta, to our malls SM City (not the usual box-type), Robinson's (can't find a mall designed similar to it). It's so beautiful......

DoT hosts visiting cruise ship, broadens reach to tourists arriving via cruise ships

MANILA, Dec. 13 (PNA) -- The Department of Tourism (DoT) has expressed intentions to broaden its reach to foreigners arriving via cruise ships as it hosted the arrival and send-off of an Italian cruise ship at the South Harbor.

The department's welcome program to the passengers of M/V Costa Allegra was highlighted by a Masskara street dance performance and booths that showcase the best of Filipino arts and crafts.
Souvenir leis and information materials were also given to the close to 1,000 passengers, comprised mostly of Italian and other European nationals.

Tour operator Travel People organized day visits around Corregidor, Tagaytay, historic Manila and a special shopping trip.

Pangkat Kawayan, an orchestra that plays indigenous bamboo instruments, serenaded the visitors at the end of the day as they left for their next destination.

M/V Costa Allegra, a world-renowned Italian cruise ship, has scheduled 10 calls to Manila this year.

The vessel features the country in two of its Asian itineraries, namely Treasures of the Far East and Jewels of the Far East.

Both courses include stops in China, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Brunei, Singapore, Korea and Japan.

The department is currently coordinating with its partners in the private sector to groom the country as a major Asian destination for cruise ships and increase visitor arrivals from this market. (PNA)

This only means that the value of the land in that area will go up considerably in the next few year. Does anyone know when the Fuel Depots at the Banago area will be relocated. It is a major hazard to the city as all of them are less then half a kilometer to Lacson St., Sta. Clara, L'Fisher and so many other important establishments. It is less than a kilometer away from the Riverside Medical Centre.

Bacolod: P120M port soon to rise in Bacolod (9:04 a.m.)
By Erwin Ambo S. Delilan

THAILAND --- A P120-million modular port will soon rise in Bacolod City, said Bacolod City Representative Monico Puentevella in Korat (Nakhon Ratchasima) here Sunday.

Puentevella said the Spanish Government through the Bank of Madrid has finally approved the 800 million euro funding to construct a total 70 modular ports in various parts of the country, as part of the commitment of the King and Queen of Spain to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, during the latter's visit there last week.

Puentevella, who was with President Arroyo's entourage in Spain, was here Sunday to inspect Filipino athletes' condition being the country's Chef de Mission for this year's 24th Southeast Asian Games.

He said he already had an initial talk with Joey Salceda, presidential adviser for special projects, that of the 70 modular ports to be constructed in the country, one of them will be built in Bacolod.

"That's already final and I am just studying where to put this modular port. But I have already in mind of putting it either at the old Bacolod airport in Singcang area or in Barangay Sum-ag," the Bacolod lawmaker said.

Puentevella, however, is not yet sure of the total area to be utilized for the said port project.

HERE (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2007/12/10/bacolod.p120m.port.soon.to.rise.in.bacolod.(9.04.a.m.).html)

Bredco I guess. The reclamation area is quite big and underutilized yet, so there is still space to expand the port.

the bredco port i think is no longer after the 20 years...in the future of the Reclamation area as an industrial-commercial estate...the the cornerstone of catapulting Bacolod into a modern urban industrial and commercial complex ...The first-ever condominium Horizon Twin tower to be built in Bacolod may actually be a prelude to the expected accelerated development of the Reclamation area into a city within a city, and into a commercial and industrial center...and the bulk of goal had already been accomplished...this is also a part of the Masskara city master development plan...and there is already a proposals of making the coastal road complete from brgy banago going to reclamation, singcang, sum-ag and reaching to Bago city...so either the brgy Singcang or the brgy Sum-ag is a right place to relocate the modular port...

in the more future concept of the reclamation area....At the edge of the city at BREDCO there will be a Mask shaped human made island, very cool idea.

I'm:nuts:for F1. So true gid about Kimi deserving the win, I don't think it's right to have a champion who doesn't have a majority of the podium wins. Following in Kimi's footsteps, driving for McLaren in his second year  Anyway, medyo off topic na ako :D

the area behind the Negros Museum (Capitol) is for the building of a P250 million,,, a 4,000-seater convention center ...the 10-hectare property was formerly occupied by some 900 squatter families who were relocated to Cabugwason, Brgy Mansilingan, Bacolod...it will be constructed w/ function rooms that could accommodate int'l. conventions and the design will complement with the Capitol building. ..the province sell a part of the property specifically the mixed-used area under the open option scheme then invite tycoons and local investors. ..this was approved by the SP during the term of former Guv Lito Coscolluela...suggested to a name of the convention center,,, like Negros Occidental Development Center,,, Talabu-an Park, Trade and Development Center, ,,Negros Occidental Trade and Convention Center,,, Negros Occidental Trade and Convention Complex,,, Kauswagan Trade and Convention Center,,, Buglas Trade and Commercial Complex,,, and Kauswagan Trade and Convention Center

Thank you sugarfreak for this promising information, hopefully the province has its own convention center, I saw the site last year, wala na mga balay....

Bacolod City 2007 Highlights

SM city Bacolod
Mall of Asia of Western Visayas

Bacolod City was cited for having the most business-friendly local government in the Visayas for 2006. The city hosts several multinational BPO and ICT companies. It has a vibrant tourism industry, with the world famous Maskara Festival among its major attractions. These attributes make Bacolod City an ideal and suitable location for an SM Prime mall,” Hans Sy, SM Prime president.

The Electric MassKara was a first-time addition to the annual October festival, which has the public plaza as main venue and where the three-day street dancing competitions culminated.

The festival was used as a launching pad for turning Lacson Street, from 5th Street all the way down to North Drive where many restaurants are located, into a tourist area

To add to that negros is actually the 4th largest island in the philippines, and bacolod is really not small, i'd rather say its medium...hehehehe

Bacolod was so alive last night...it seems like its still masskara festival :) people from other towns and cities gathered aound SM city to witness the first Pyromagic festival in Bacolod. This festival is gonna be the Next attraction in Bacolod City aside from well known festivals like Masskara and Panaad sa Negros. Indeed, Mayor Bing is really on high speed to promote tourism in Bacolod City.

Last Nights event was a Big Hit and people were talking about it. The part 2 will be on December 2, 2007 at 9PM. Again, Boy, Wildmusic and I (SUV111) will surely witness the spectacular event. Pyromagic festival is the beginning of the Next Tourism event in Bacolod's History.

Just a comment on the "Mall of Asia of the Visayas" title though, first it's unsourced, and definitely wasn't announced. The design might look like MOA but it wasn't officially declared so. I do hope no one will flame from that.

its a competition, Mayor Bing wants it to be a yearly event. The part 2 will be on the 22nd, that will also be the time they will announce the winners. :) i cant wait to see the remaining three contestants. :) I just wish next year, there will be more participating teams coming from other cities like pampangga and Cebu :)

^^ With Bacolod's economic uptrend, i guess this will be "the event" to dot your calendar every month of December. Its one way of making known that Bacolod welcomes with open arms all of our neighbors not only in the Visayas but of course the ones in Mindanao and Luzon as well. Investment-wise and resident-to-be , Bacolod peeps warmly welcome our fellows in other parts of the country. This is starting to hold true due to the many high profile BPO's grabbing its fair share in the city's incentives, PEZA accredited bldgs., and excellent IT infrastructures. I guess, more people from other islands will flock the city soon. Yeah @Smile, i agree with you that Mayor Bing is really making Bacolod have its MARK noted in the mad scramble for economic success.:)
