hello bacolod. i am so surprised to see the thread going so fast.

suv, i agree with the rest. your pictures have improved so much. you should really purse studying photography. who knows where it could lead you.

i don't have any comment on bio-fuel. i don't know a lot anything about it anyway. All i could say is...kasla is sooo good with burns. hahahhaa....(layo layo na punto) but it's true. when i was in grade school, i burned myself after new year playing firecrackers. it was one very painful experience that's why i am a strong advocate of not using these things during new year's celebration.

Nways, twice a day my lola would apply the tar of the kasla to my burns. She said it will help me not to have scars. and hooala! i don't have any scars from that burn.

Amo lang na mastorya ko parte sa kasla:-)

I will pursue being the advocate of TLC first before photography...hehehehe!!! thank you putnam, but if you have any comments about my pics...please dont hesitate to send me a PM... :)

anyway, regarding KASLA, it is also used to treat fever because of its cooling effect...and its effective. :)

FINALLY, JANUARY 19?
NEW AIRPORT OPENS
By Edgar Cadagat

The inauguration of the Bacolod-Silay airport of international standards is still indefinite but could also take place this month, Antonio Alfonso, Air Transportation Office (ATO), Manager told Aksyon Radyo in an interview yesterday.

Contrary to earlier reports, the Silay City McKinley Access Road can now be used with the lights installed next week, Alfonso said. The road shoulders construction and the canal reinforcements can continue to be built once the airport is opened.

For all intents and purposes, the airport can be opened on January 17, with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expectedn to inaugurate it on January 19, but if she could not come and personally inaugurate it, this can be transferred to another date within the month or the following month.

Manpower needed for the airport’s operation have been hired and which include more than casual workers mainly those who will beef up the security force and janitorial service. For those with technical expertise, the present ATO personnel in the Bacolod Airport have started transferring including equipment needed for the operation.

A total of 275 ATO personnel are needed but the present manpower will do, given that the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) is not inclined to approve funding for hiring. Earlier, Regional NEDA Director Arturo Vale-ro, said the construction of the access road from Brgy. Bagtic where the airport is located to Silay City and then the national highway was delayed because of right-of-way problems brought up by landowners in the area.*

Vice guv favors One Negros Federal State
BACOLOD CITY -- Negros Occidental Vice Gov. Isidro Zayco supports the move to change the Constitution to a federal form of government by province but not by region as a federal state.

Zayco said he supports the move to create a One Negros Federal State that would combine as one federal state the Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental provinces.

"This was planned long ago. Right now, there are already several access roads going to Negros Oriental. This would separate Negros Occidental from Region 6 (Western Visayas) where it belongs now," Zayco said.

He said the Panay Federal State can be composed of Iloilo, Antique, Aklan, Guimaras and Capiz provinces.

"I find it hard combining Negros with provinces like Antique, Guimaras and Capiz into one region state because the question then would be, who will subsidize them?," he said.

Zayco said he is supportive of the moves to change the present form of government to federalism because this would mean independence for the provinces.

"We can have independence in our revenues, in education, the police even the judiciary without going to the national government. This is good for the province," Zayco stressed.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, he said, made mention about the drafting of a roadmap to federalism by year 2012.

Zayco said there were already local campaigns last year in support for federalism and he has been giving his support to such moves. (PNA)

bernie, thank you so much for posting the CebuPac article on Silay. I really think Silay is one of the most important architectural cities in the Phils. It is one of my dreams to work for the World Heritage Foundation. Maybe one day :) Funny also cause the people featured in the article are so familiar to me. Dr. Zialcita was even my socio/anthro teacher in college!

Bo B, no need for the Gulfstream if there are intl flights going to Silay directly, just like Cebu's intl airport, no? besides I am for saving gas and the environment, perhaps when private planes will run on vegetable oil, we'll see then. :) (i dont want to open a can of worms. basi may ma disagree naman about using certain crops for fuel)

putnam, ikaw are you watching the pats game live? :D how i wish I can see a F1 race live! There are lots opportunities for fans living in the Phils to go - Malaysia, Bahrain, China and Singapore!!! ka damo nga daan deals sa mga airlines for cheap intl tickets. hay. :) boynegros, ready mo na ang imo earplugs, you might find a good deal for tickets! ako wala gid chance for now cause the closest race is the Indianapolis GP and they will not be racing there this season :(

True! Although I am definitely curious as to whether the whole country can survive with this system of govt. i wonder what will happen in Mindanao for example?

I really hope though, that Negros will go organic!!!! This is very exciting news. It is better for the people and better for the environment. on the other hand, will the govt subsidize the cost? organic products are certainly more expensive! people will almost always choose cost over quality, and we can't blame them :ohno:

@Menina: Definitely Mindanao will soar to greater heights if we pursue Federalism. Same with the rest, Visayas and Luzon. The problem is not on the resources(organic or industrial). Its more of the so called "Malacanang Hierarchy" and "Manila Monarchy" mentalities. Seriously, all of the countries' geographical divide(LuzViMin) can be an economic powerhouse if not with the "mentalities" aforementioned.:)

Quite a long road. Our place is 1.8 km down that long tree shaded driveway.

I've tried walking all the way from our house to the highway and it took more than 30 minutes. By the time I reached the guardhouse, rain was already starting and I had to run to get to the highway and get into a jeepney to Bacolod. Anyways SUV111, I'd be happy to give you a tour of the whole village over the next weekend or early in the morning during weekdays.

really?..thats nice...but I'm hoping that we can take some pics of the houses inside but I'm afraid they wont allow it. Maybe I'll just take a picture of your house instead and post it here. would that be alright?...and mind you, I am a voracious eater, if you wanna tour me around...make sure you have foods to offer coz i easily get hungry. :) hehehehehe

Well, you could take pictures if the guards aren't around and the houses are quiet... heheh... you could go swimming and we can have lunch at the clubhouse.

Good evening, Bacolod! :)

SUV, I really love your new pics! Especially the one with the Sacred Heart Church.

Btw, one of our bellmen fetched a high official from SM. She told the bellman that of all the branches of SM in around Visayas, it's in Bacolod that they have the highest sales. No wonder they're already planning for expansion. ;)

I love the place..its laid-back and very classy. I'm also crazy about their service(I'm very particular about how waiters and waitresses handle their guests). The salads and main dishes were good but I looovvee their desserts. That one up there is their Panna Cota with burnt orange caramel sauce and frozen grapes. Definitely drool-worthy. :)

Year 2007, Bacolodnons and the whole Negrense are thankful that SM City finally arrived in Sugarlandia. That importance alone can be felt by SM management as seen by continued patronage and increase in sales. But SM should not rest on their laurels coz Robinsons are aggressive as well. In fact, Robinsons will surely go for their expansion plans pretty soon. It's even advertised at the mall lobby as early as July 2007(sang ara ko sa Bcd:)). I know most Bacolod middle class peeps are very clannish. They want the importance and the special treatment. SM will have to put more in Bacolod, if it really wants to gain Bacolod's trust and loyalty. One great example, Mcdonalds reign in Bacolod than Jollibee.:)

New Bacolod Silay Airport Opens Jan. 19 - Newks
The new Bacolod Silay Airport of international standard will open on January 19, 2008, as declared by Bacolod City Lone District Rep. Monico O. Puentvella.
He said with or without President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, this new airport will open on that day. “President Arroyo told me it should open even in her absence. She was here and had seen the airport facility and she said open it as soon as possible.” Puentevella planned to have the opening on January 20, 2008 in honoring its patron saint, time for the feast of San Sebastian, Bacolod’s fiesta, but it was not possible, and so the opening will fall on Saturday, January 19, 2008. Meanwhile, the Airport Retention Movement has been out of touch regarding its move to retain the Bacolod domestic airport.

Rodolfo “Babes” Alvarez went with Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia to meet business taipan Lucio Tan, being the owner of a portion of the Bacolod airport property. They succeeded in getting the approval of the Taipan, but for now, the movement has not reported on what’s the latest about their airport retention move.* (CNC):banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana:

Tsinoys gear for Bacolaodiat (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2008/01/07/news/tsinoys.gear.for.bacolaodiat.html)

AN OFFICIAL of the Chinese-Filipino community hopes to see deep historical friendship shared between two cultures and the restoration of the Bacolod Shopping Center as a commercial hub in celebration of the Chinese New Year.

The community decided to organize the management of the annual celebration of the Chinese New Year into the Bacolaodiat Inc.

The Chinese New Year of Bacolaodiat for 2008 is slated February 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Bacolaodiat, Inc. Vice Chairman Crispin Chua explained that "basic of all basics," the seeds of the Chinese-Filipino friendship can already be seen in how the two cultures transformed even the social labeling of one another.

"Whereas before, we call Filipinos 'Hwa Na' (alien, Barbarian), now we are too careful not even to call our house helpers this derogatory names. Likewise, the word 'Intsik' (origin not so clear) is seldom heard from among Filipinos. 'Tsinoy' is now very popular or the word 'Chinese' itself is predominantly used among the learned Filipinos," Chua observed.

"Why is this so? It's because our ethnographic tension had began to disappear and a historical and cultural-based friendship had evolved. This we owe mainly to many Filipinos who studied Chinese and Tsinoys realizing that while their roots are in China but their maturity as a people is being a Filipino," Chua said.

Chua stressed, "I would like this friendship highlighted in the celebration of the Chinese New Year this 2008."

Also, Chua explained that one of the 'innovations' this year is the transfer of the festival area from the Bacolod Public Plaza to the Bacolod Shopping Center and the area along the vicinities of Lacson-6th Streets.

Chua explained that the Bacolod Shopping Center is historically very meaningful to a lot of our elders, adding, "Many of the Chinese 'blue blooded' old-timers started their livelihood in 'shopping'."

"As an architect by profession, shopping can be transformed into a real Chinatown. By painting the buildings anew, drainage system and streets repaired and the putting up of streetlights, all these will speak for themselves," Chua added.

"Soon, shopping's lost glory will be restored and people will begin to consider it as an option location for commerce. Tourism industry can be developed here," he added.

Meanwhile, Chua disclosed initial plans for the Bacolaodiat calendar of events, among them, temple tours, chopsticks alley, lantern parade, fireworks display, commercial and restaurant deals, cultural competition, Tsinoy Olympics and business conferences.

Bacolod will be more progressive if NBSA will open by January. Start the new year with new, new infrastructures and growth.

Old airport will close and convert it into housing or commercial district. Mas maraming makikinabang and will create more jobs. ^^

City all set for BacoLaodiat
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A longer chopsticks alley, synchronized fireworks display, and illuminated floats are just among the featured attractions of this year's BacoLaodiat Festival to be held from Feb. 7-10 in Bacolod City .

Bacolaodiat event manager Marivic Rio yesterday said they want the Festival to become a major destination for the Chinese New Year not just in the province but all over the country.
She said the main festival site for this year's celebration will be the Capitol Shopping Center where the roots of the Chinese community came from. The activities will be held mainly at the 6 th Street all the way to Lacson and the Capitol Lagoon, she added.

Rio said this year's BacoLaodiat Festival will feature a synchronized fireworks display they call “Symphony of Lights and Sparks ” and the lighting up of installations at the Lagoon on the first day with Mayor Evelio Leonardia and other officials to open the BacoLaodiat Festival. Twelve animal installations will be put up by Charlie Co, who is handling the designs, at the Lagoon where people can go and have their pictures taken, she added.

Rio said there will be a longer chopsticks alley along 6 th Street up to McDonalds which will be lined up with kiosks that will sell Chinese delis and products, as well as, nightly entertainment to sustain the activity. She said they are getting local bands and are negotiating with celebrities to come over and join the celebration.

Rio said this time they have incorporated a lantern and streetdancing competition on the third day which will mainly focus on choreography and lantern design. A parade of illuminated floats, dragons and lions will start at 6 p.m. and this will be joined in by the 34 Chinese organizations from the northern and southern Negros , she added.

This year's theme is “strength and unity” since it has always been a principle of the Chinese that when there are two people, there will be always strength and opportunity and other activities include a tour of the Chinese temples, she said.

Leonardia said the BacoLaodiat started in 2005 after his talks with Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas when he visited Iloilo to observe the Chinese Festival celebration there. He, together with the Chinese group in Bacolod , then decided to put one up in the city.

The two previous BacoLaodiat Festival celebrations were big successes and the way it looks, the third will even outdo the others, Leonardia said. “As our philosophy in Bacolod , we always say we will try to do better than our best as we have done with the MassKara Festival,” he said. So that should also be the criteria for the BacoLaodiat, he added.

Meanwhile, William Ong, chairman of the 2008 BacoLaodiat Festival committee, said they consider 2008 a very lucky year for mankind. He said a date like August 8, 2008 comes once in a hundred years.

Other members of the 2008 BacoLaodiat Festival committee are Crispin Chua – vice chairman, Lily Go – treasurer, Mary Tian – secretary, and members are Diotay Lopue, Teresa Gochangco, Charlie Co, Hugo Corral Jr. and Secretary to the Mayor Goldwyn Nifras.*CGS
