Check state of wet markets selling meats, city vet told

A resolution directing the Bacolod City Veterinarian to evaluate and inspect all “talipapas” or wet markets in the major streets and barangays of the city was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

The resolution authored by Councilors Alex Paglumotan, Dindo Ramos and Celia Flor aims to ensure proper conduct of ante and post mortem inspection of slaughtered livestock. It also directed City Veterinarian Dr. Adelo Daroy to inspect the permits of all slaughtered animals being sold in these wet markets.

The resolution said it entered into a memorandum of agreement with AVM Bernardo for the eventual operation of a double A abattoir in Handumanan because the protection of the constituents of the city and their safety against illegally slaughtered livestock or “hot meat” is the concern of the incumbent administration.

This is because the city wants to promote the welfare of the public through enforcement of the rules issued by the National Meat Inspection Commission, it added.

The SP had also passed a resolution asking the City Planning and Development Office/City Register of Deeds, through the Mayor's Office, about the status of the slaughterhouse in Brgy. 35, Bacolod City and for its documents.

The resolution also said that since the city entered into an agreement with AVM Bernardo, the Committee of Markets and Slaughterhouse wants to know what will become of the old slaughterhouse in Brgy. 35, when the new slaughterhouse becomes operational.*CGS

Bacolod celebrates a 10th ‘birthday’

MANILA, Philippines - A 10-year-old in Bacolod City is having a growth spurt—by more than half its current size.

Robinsons Place Bacolod is expanding from 4.5 hectares by about 2.5 hectares more with the annex that is expected to open sometime next year.

But, with or without the projected expansion, the capital of Negros Occidental seemed to think it had every reason to celebrate a decade of malling at Robinsons.

Bacolodnons and local government executives enthusiastically joined mall officials during the recent 10th anniversary celebration of the city’s first mall.

City Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia put the festive mood in perspective in his effusive keynote speech during the short program that formally marked Robinsons’ 10th year in Bacolod and launched the new annex.

“The opening of Robinsons (in the city also) opened so many doors. It marked the birth of the mall age in Bacolod. Afterwards, many things happened,” Leonardia said.

Robinsons became a symbol of investors’ confidence, the mayor said. Thanking and congratulating the mall chain management at the same time, Leonardia said, “You saw what others did not see and the others then followed.”

He said Robinsons led the way in turning the self-proclaimed City of Smiles into a true urban center. “When you came here, Bacolod was never the same again,” Leonardia said as he proudly announced that the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry had named Bacolod as the most business-friendly city in the Visayas.

BacoLaodiat to kick
off with lantern parade
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod City , for the third consecutive year, will celebrate the BacoLaodiat Festival Feb. 7-10, with the Capitol Shopping Center as the main activity center, as 2008 ushers in the Year of the Earth Rat in the Chinese lunar calendar.

The Capitol Shopping Center is considered the base of Chinese heritage in the city and a symbol of the enduring partnership between the Filipino and Chinese communities.

This year's BacoLaodiat Festival celebration will feature the first-ever grand evening lantern parade on Feb. 7 featuring dragons and lions and the 12 Chinese zodiac animals in illuminated floats. The parade will be participated in by the 34-member Tsinoy organizations and corporations.

The lantern parade led by the creative leadership of artist Charlie Co, will start at SM and end at the Capitol Lagoon where the giant zodiac lanterns will be displayed during the festival.

The “symphony of sparks and lights,” a city-wide synchronized lighting ceremony which will include installations and a city-wide fireworks show, will be held on Feb. 7 at 6 p.m. as Mayor Evelio Leonardia declares the opening of BacoLaodiat at the main stage at 6 th Street.

A Chinese Lantern Street Dancing competition, with adherence to the theme of “Strength and Unity” reflecting the merging of the Filipino and Chinese cultures, will also be held for the first time on Feb. 9 and is open to various private and public schools, barangays, cities and municipalities.

Lacson Street once again closed, as it was during MassKara Festival last year.

Among the activities set are the Chinese painting exhibit at SM City, city-wide dragon and lion dance, and the chopsticks alley along 6 th Street where open-air dining tents will be set up for the public to enjoy Chinese and Filipino food and where visitors and Chinese family associations will wear their costumes and color-coded attires for the big street party.

Colorful lanterns, kiosks, and rolling carts will be lined up along 6 th Street to transform the Capitol Shopping Center into a mini China town.

A tour of the temples to the three major Chinese temples in the city will be held on Feb. 8 and 9 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., while a Chinese cultural show will be held at the SM Event Centre from 3-4 p.m. on Feb 8. This will be followed by a Tsinoy Olympics from 5-7 p.m. the same day at the Chopsticks Alley.

Other activities are a Chinese Cook Fest at Robinsons Place on Feb. 9, band shows and concerts, comedy and musical shows and mall performances of Chinese streetdance winners on Feb. 10.

The four-day activity will be capped by a farewell ceremony at 6 th Street to bid the Year of the Pig goodbye and welcome the Year of the Rat on Feb. 10. The program will include awarding of the plaques and prizes to the winners and entertainment numbers. This will be followed by a countdown to the grandest finale of fireworks display.

BacoLaodiat was coined from the name of the City of Bacolod and the Fookien word “laodiat” which means happy celebration.

The 2008 BacoLaodiat Festival is chaired by William Ong of 888 Mall, with Crispin Chua as vice chairman, Lily Go – treasurer, Mary Tien – secretary and Charlie Co, Hugo Corral, Teresa Gochangco, Leonito Lopue, and Secretary to the Mayor Goldwyn Nifras as directors.*CGS

Solon Assures NSCA to Become a University Soon

By Teresa Ellera-Dulla

6th District Congressman Genaro “Lim-ao” Alvarez has assured the Negros State College of Agriculture (NSCA) it will soon become the Central Philippine State University (CPSU).

Alvarez, father of the Cityhood of Kabankalan and Sipalay, said before December this year, he will make sure that the upgrading of the School will pass in Congress. He made the assurance during the blessing and inauguration yesterday of the newly built swimming pool, pavilion and Product Center which were jointly financed by the school and his office.

NSCA now has branches all over the 6th district in Sipalay, Cauayan, Candoni and Hinoba-an, Ilog and Moises Padilla. Freddie Maningo, President of NSCA disclosed that Hinoba-an mayor Teresita Bilbao already approved the P1.8 million fund for personnel services of the Hinoba-an NSCA campus that will be re-opened this coming school year. He said he has already completed papers and requirements for the first and only state college of agriculture in Negros island to become a university. The School would need about P100 million yearly budget once it becomes a university. At present, it operates on a P32 million budget. Aside from Agricultural courses, the school now offers Masteral and Doctoral Degrees and Engineering courses.

Alvarez said all over the province, the 6th District is privileged to have a college in almost every town and city. He conceptualized the idea of putting up these colleges after a survey came out that out of 100 youths, less than 3 percent have reached college. Alvarez also has hundreds of scholars in different campuses of NSCA. Aside from the swimming pool, Alvarez said a hotel will also rise soon in the school campus for the opening of the Hotel and Restaurant Management Course that will also be offered by the school.*

Changes are really good that Bacolod might get a Hotel from Robs which they will pattern after thier branches in Manila Ermita and Ortigas.A minimum of one hunderd rooms sould fine but more than a hundred is more better.

Home Mini-Complex Inaugurated
By Edgar Cadagat

A blessing and inauguration of several infrastructure projects built inside and near the Negros State College of Agriculture (NESCA), was conducted yesterday with Sixth District Congressman Genaro Alvarez Jr. as guest.

Dr. Freddie Maningo, NESCA president, told journalists that blessed by the local parish priest was a pavilion, an olympic-size swimming pool, a restaurant and a product center built by NESCA itself in front of its campus.

The sprawling NESCA area, totalling more than 4,000 hecatares is located in Camingawan Village, Kabankalan City, about 100 kilometers south of Bacolod City.

The swimming pool and the pavilion is a short walk from the NESCA building. The whole area is a virtual eco-tourism paradise with thousands of trees planted at hillsides and flora and fauna found everywhere.

Maningo said he plans to turn a natural spring and water-fed lagoon nearby into a mini-zoo with crocodiles he plans to put in. The swimming pool could be a source of income for the college as entrance fees for those who want to swim there are to be charged.

Funding for the projects come from NESCA itself and Congressman Alvarez’ PDAF funds. Alvarez said both he and NESCA would pool resources to build a medium-size hotel beside the Product Center and restaurant which could become a haven for travellers coming from both provinces, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. From Kabankalan, travellers proceed to Mabinay town and then to Negros Oriental and its capital, Dumaguete City.
Beside the restaurant is a Farmers’ Center where farm produce could be sold by farmers from surrounding villages.

Maningo and Alvarez both have agreed to turn the college into a university and have been making moves to ensure they comply with requirements for conversion which include increasing the school’s population to 5,000 students within this year.
NESCA has been of great help to families in sixth district as extension classes in Candoni, Cauayan, Kabankalan, Ilog, Hinobaan have been established.

Scholars from marginalized families have also been accepted by NESCA, with many recommendations coming from local government officials

Rerouting to Decongest Downtown Traffic

Councilors Wilson “Jun” Gamboa who chairs the SP Committee on Transportation, has stood pat on his proposal to go on with the traffic experiment for a month more and to reroute passenger jeepneys coming from the south specifically from Brgy. Alijis to turn right to the short stretch Ballesteros St., this city.

In an interview with NDB, Gamboa also said that passenger jeepneys from Capitol Shopping Center area should proceed to Locsin St., turn right and park at the proposed terminal owned by the giant mall chain, Gasaino with whom he is now negotiating.

Gamboa said it would be hitting two birds with one stone as ambulant vendors could also be given space to do business and earn income inside the spacious Gaisano parking place used by its customers for their vehicles.

The neophyte councilor pointed out that the Luzuriaga Araneta area up to the Luzuriaga-Locsin stretch are virtual bottlenecks anytime of the day. This stretch must be relieved of the chaotic traffic, he said.

Those coming from the Shopping Center area further make traffic congested because they park in the public market waiting for passengers.

With the traffic experiment extended, the rerouting cannot be carried out. An SP resolution allowing the traffic experiment has been extended twice, Gamboa wants more try.* (Edgar Cadagat)

City taking serious steps to clean up Bacolod

BACOLOD City - The city government here headed by Mayor Evelio Leonardia is taking seriously its city-wide clean up drive and has started the evaluation of the solid waste management situation in the city.

The Clean and Green Coordinating Action Team led by Councilor Greg Gasataya together with barangay captains of the 61 barangays in the city conducted an orientation and assessment of the actual situation of garbage problem here.

The event was a joint effort of Clean and Green Coordinating Action Team with the cooperation of Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) President Diosdado Valenzuela.

The orientation was held at the Social Hall of the Department of Education-Bacolod City at 11 a.m.

The event was graced by Sen. Pia Cayetano and Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson.
Aside from assessing the garbage situation of each barangay, the meeting also aims to provide an intensive action plan on how to address the problem.

The action team found an ally with environmentalist lawyer Antonio Oposa. He gave tips on how to solve the perennial headache on garbage not only in Bacolod but in other local government units around the country.

Oposa has made many friends and enemies in his cause for the protection and conservation of the environment. He filed several charges against the local government for allegedly violating their task of handling solid waste management.

Presently chairman of the Action Team and the Committee on Ecology and Environment, Gasataya is pushing for a cleaner Bacolod.

He has proposed the Ordinance Regulating the Use of Plastic Bags / Plastic Cellophane (Polyethylene) as Packing / Bagging Materials and Institutionalizing the Use of Biodegradable Containers within the City of Bacolod.

When Leonardia issued a memorandum for the creation of the Bacolod City Clean and Green Coordinating Action Team last December, the team immediately began its head-on battle against with the perennial problem of the city - garbage.

Flying School in Bacolod Soon?
A flying school may be opened soon in the old Bacolod Airport.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia expressed hope that this endeavor will materialize soon enough because an Indian group with
Bacolodnon Enrique “Nene” Rojas has manifested their intention to invest in such kind of business. Leonardia said, considering that tourism is becoming number one industry elsewhere, airport services will become a necessity. Tourists are time-conscious and that they fall in line buying small aircrafts. So, when there is an airplane, there is a pilot. The demand for pilots is increasing, thus, the opening of a flying school.

It will not only benefit Bacolod, but also give opportunity to Negrenses to get such prestigious job as pilots. The mayor has admitted that one aircraft per day for Bacolod-Manila-Bacolod route is being proposed, and adopted son Taipan Lucio Tan will handle the maintenance of the airport.

With the opening of a flying school, the economic development of Bacolod airport will soar, according to the mayor.* (Edith B. Colmo)

I find it wierd actually.Well that's just a school and i think it will be a secondary reasons for the parents to decide for thier children to study here.At the end of the day,the important for a school is the teaching standard.I have some nephew studying in TayTung and they said it's one of the best schools in Bacolod.

Sipalay wins coveted Tourism award

SIPALAY City has been adjudged as the grand champion of the "Hiyas ng Turismo" search for new and undiscovered tourist destinations in the country.
Also known as the Jewel of the Sugar Island, Sipalay is about 178 kilometers south of Bacolod City and is becoming known for its fine-sand beaches and beautiful sunsets.

This is aside from the relatively undisturbed pristine marine environment and several diving sites that have already gained popularity among foreign tourists.

Several resorts and tourist facilities have sprouted in the area recently.

The Hiyas ng Turismo award was given during a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency, Pasay City, Wednesday.

Hiyas ng Turismo is a joint project of the Department of Tourism (DOT) and Women in Travel launched last year to introduce new alternative destinations for frequent travelers and to promote domestic and inbound tourism as well as to introduce undiscovered destination in the tourism industry.

Sipalay City Tourism Officer Christine Mansinares received a check worth P100,000 for the development of the city's tourism industry and a round trip ticket to Singapore as well as promotional materials that will feature the city.

Bugang River of Antique was declared 1st runner-up while Twin Falls of Cavinti, Laguna and Sibang Cove of Cagayan Valley were adjudged 2nd and 3rd runner-up, respectively.

Adjudged as national finalists are the Grotto of Resales, Pangasinan - Region I; Sibang Cove of Cagayan Valley - Region II; Sacobia Valley of Pampanga - Region III; Magdalena of Magdalena, Laguna-Region IV; Lake Apo of Misamis Oriental-Region X and Mt. Hamiguitan/Kalumonan Dev. Center of Mati, Davao Oriental- Region XI.

The winners were judged for the following: 30 percent - text voting from the public and 70 percent scoring of the judges or the national team.

Senator Richard Gordon graced the awarding ceremony and gave P5 million that will be equally divided among the winners and finalists for their tourism promotion.

I agree @NGProf. You just mentioned the formidable three of Negros Occ.'s economy. San Carlos City up north and Kabankalan City down south. Central would be Bacolod reinforced by Talisay & Silay. While the east can be supported(for now) by the resurgence of developments along the new govt. center vicinity. With NBSA taking the lead, all we need now is an international seaport. Flyhigh Bacolod/Negros Occ. It'll be a boom 2008.:cheers:

Tipon wins; Tacuyan, Payla fall

By DANTE NAVARRO
The Philippine Star

BANGKOK – Unfazed by the numbing setback of fellow Asian Games gold medallist Violito Payla, bantamweight Joan Tipon went to work and pounded Jordan’s Ebraheem Algharageer with a flurry of punches to score a 13-2 decision in the first AIBA Asian Boxing Olympic Qualifying tournament at the Dhurakij Punjit University here Saturday.

Tipon proved elusive from the attacking Algharageer from the opening bell, showing impressive lateral movements while flicking away shots that often landed on the face of his Jordanian rival, whom he also clobbered in the 2006 Tammer Cup in Finland.

"Maganda ang laro ni Joan, na-execute ang plano. Hindi gigil at hindi din relax," said national team coach Pat Gaspi.

Tipon’s one-sided victory came like a whiff of fresh air for the RP-PLDT Smart boxing team, whose top bet for an Olympic berth took an early exit.

Ranged against a taller, quicker rival, Payla flinched and absorbed a severe
beating from Yunusov Anvar of Tajikistan, blowing his bid for an Olympic berth for the second straight time.

The RSC (Referee-Stopped-Contest)-Outscored verdict (30-10) hardly came as a surprise for the RP PLDT Smart boxing squad as Anvar completely outclassed the Filipino bet with his reach, power and technique to march into the second round of the 51-kg division.

Later in the night, Orlando Tacuyan Jr. failed to sustain a superb second round fightback and went on to drop a 16-25 verdict to Kazakhstan’s Galib Jafarov in their featherweight clash.

Tacuyan, 19, fell, 3-6 in the first round but came back strong in the second to seize a 9-7 advantage. But the Angeles City bet failed to thwart Jafarov’s assault in the last two rounds, falling behind again at the end of the round, 11-18, before eventually losing the match.

In contrast, the 25-year-old Tipon had no problem disposing of Algharageer, whose speed and power powered him past Tajikistan’s Malaev Emomali, 30-22, in the first round Friday.

But the Jordanian’s style proved no match for the talented Tipon, who dominated the four-round encounter with his quick right-left combinations and footwork.

He came out rather slow with a 5-1 lead after two rounds, but stepped up in the third where he piled up points with head blows while eluding his rival’s onslaught with swift side-to-side movement.

Tipon next faces Pakistan’s Mukamamad Ali, who earlier smothered Sayiel Lasa of Indonesia but whom Gaspi said would pose no problem for the Talisay, Negros Occidental native.

Colmo)

Camera Club

With the opening of the Bacolod Silay Airport , the Camera Club of Negros will soon have a new home.

Photographic works of CCN members, previously exhibited at the pre-departure area of the Bacolod airport, will soon be displayed near the check-in counter of the just-opened facility in Silay City , said Nicky Ledesma, president of the organization which has at least 22 active members at present for its exhibits.

Members have updated their technology, applying digital photography and photo editing, among others, giving birth to a breed of artists with computer-based expertise.

The Camera Club, in celebration of the National Photography Week, which ends today, ran a series of activities which included a photo exhibit, lectures at St. John's Institute and the University of St. La Salle . Jude Chua of Data Lik talked on I-Photo Editing'. Hans Corral discussed Basic Photoshop, Dennis Reyes discussed Composition and Pons Lizares shared his insights on Basic Photography and Photoshop.

The Camera club was founded in 1981 by a group of photography hobbyists composed of Ton Corral, Elenita Motnelibano, Billy Lopue and lawyer Alex Mirano.

Ledesma said he, along with Boy and Ben de Asis, Rolando Tan, Toto Tarrosa, the late Jun Saturnino and Diolas Diopol later joined the club with now Silay Mayor Oti Montelibano also becoming a member.

Antonio Abong is the incumbent vice president of the club.

The club meets every first Wednesday of the month and hold monthly photo shoots on the third and fourth week and holds a quarterly photo exhibit and contest for the members.

Guv to meet Lucio on PNB issue
By Genalin D. Ducay

GOVERNOR Joseph Marañon revealed Thursday that a meeting is soon to be arranged between him and business tycoon Lucio Tan regarding the status of the Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Bacolod.

"The meeting though is more as a friendly dialogue than a negotiation. We have to handle this very carefully as we are dealing with one of the biggest investors in the country," Marañon said.

Marañon also said that written communications have been sent to the PNB management.

Tan now owns a majority of the PNB shares of stocks.

The governor plans to ask for a review of the existing contract between the provincial government and the PNB management regarding the area which the PNB building occupies.

Under the existing contract, the PNB is only obliged to pay P1 per year or P100 for 100 years also.

Meanwhile, Marañon said that the Bacolod City Sports Complex, formerly Paglaum Sports Complex, would be better off if placed under the Province's management.

The new proposal of the province states that part of the property will be converted into a commercial center so as to become viable and profitable.

Museum which is the COA.Kinda nice though green colored glass windows which matches to the trees around. It's a two floor building.I have talk to an employee of the DPWH and said that the Maranon administration has plenty of projects being laid for the entire province. He said that current Provincial Government is very committed to pour in more infra projects so that we will be able to become attractive to investor such projects are roads and bridges and many others.

ok...this is nice...i know a couple of people who are members of this club.
they actually show their pictures before at the departure area of the old airport....and now in Silay, this is nice...an added attraction for our visitors. :)

@jay, you can be a member of this club.

Oh yes, i would love to.Actually someone approached me to join this photo enthusiast group in San Sebastian Cathedral. We a had a short talk and that's it..:)

^^Bacoloadiat moved to make this celebration big this time and creating such activities is a very wise decision. After two successful years of celebration and now on it's third year some city have been trying to create thier own Chinese New Year too. It's quite funny though.:lol: We applause the people behind this celebration.

Migs I think Pagla-um Sport Complex is still currently managed by DepEd.NOHS is using the stadium for thier P.E. and other school activities.

Now on TV MANILA, BACOLOD, CEBU, DAVAO and DAGUPAN

this is a nice move for ABS CBN to do shows in the province and showcase their talents. :)

and good thing Bacolod is part of their Karavan

I think this is still part of the TV station war between GMA and ABS reaching out to the viewers of diffirent major cities in the Philippines. My observation while i was there in Bacolod is that ABS still holds the big percent of viewership that's why GMA wants to penetrate Bacolod TV industry.

It's a good exposure for Bacolod nationally.:banana::banana::banana:.

2 Negros solons in Davos
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Foreign businessmen and chief executive officers in Davos are upbeat on investing in the Philippines especially after the Moody's credit rating upgrade of the country from stable to positive, two Negros Occidental solons said yesterday.

Negros Occidental Representatives Jose Carlos Lacson (third district) and Ignacio Arroyo Jr. (fourth district), who are among the members of President Gloria Macapagal's party in Davos, Switzerland , sent a joint text message to the DAILY STAR.

They said the Philippine's GDP rose from 6.9 to 7.3 percent and the President and her economic team in Davos are flooded with requests for appointments from possible investors.

In a recent forum with the Swiss Asian Chamber of Commerce, the President announced that the Philippines is no longer using the facilities for foreign loans, the two Negros solons said.

The President, it was noted, has expressed confidence that her programs, particularly in infrastructure and education sector, are strongly in place and the Philippines would continue to reap the benefits of these investments regardless of who succeeds her in 2010.

Corporate responsibility rather than profit took centre stage in Davos yesterday, as the annual get-together of business chiefs turned its attention to issues of health, aid and development.

This year's Davos event has drawn nearly 30 heads of state or government, more than 110 cabinet ministers and several hundred corporate chiefs.*CPG

I hope they wont convert Paglaum into a commercial area....just renovate it extensively, change the wooden areas to concrete, revive the swimming pool and grandstand, and yes, remove those old tenants of stores around. We might host another SEA Games or maybe pati Asian Games. Its better we have 2 stadiums para di mag ginutok sa isa lang ka lugar. Its a sense of our pride pa as the premiere sports city of the country with two internationally competent stadiums

Sen. Pia “Compañera” Cayetano is flanked by Mayor Pedro P. Zayco, Jr. and Vice Mayor Delia O. Anacan in a reception tendered by Kabankalan city government.* (Eddie Yap)

Sen. Cayetano Visits Kabankalan
Sen. Pia Cayetano visited Kabankalan City recently. She was welcomed at the city hall by Vice Governor Isidro Zayco, Mayor Pedro Zayco, Vice Mayor Delia Anacan and members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

Earlier, Cayetano visited the Lorenzo Zayco District Hospital where she was welcomed by Dr. Claudelia J.S. Pabillo, hospital director. The senator has pledged P1.5 M for the improvement of the operating room. She also asked from Dr.

Pabillo a wish list and pictures of the ICU Unit for her to know what are the urgent needs of the unit.

Later in the day, she spoke in the program prepared by the Fellowship Baptist College in connection with its 54th Founders Day on the theme “One Faith, One Fellowship.” Cayetano relayed to the students how she survived the many trials in her life especially on the death of her son Gabrielle and her father former senator Renato Cayetano.

She said that her life would inspire students never to get discouraged with the difficulties they encounter in life.*(Eddie M. Yap)

I remember the master development plan of Paglaum sports complex, only former gov. montelibano was againts the conversion. hopefully the present govt, will agree the conversion the paglaum into commercial center.

this time, they will, actually Panaad is enough for us here in Negros. :) kalapad sang panaad ta kag kanami pa. :) Paglaum is just a dying infrastructure...they need to rehabilitate it or...they will convert it. i think Gov want it to be converted into a commercial zone...teh kundi nami naman e. :)

I think it still on the hands of Depertment of Education and has not yet formally turned over to the Provincial Government.I don't hear anything lately with the negotiations for the Pagla-um Sports Complex. It state is quite disturbing already.

Actually, this area has all the potentials in making it as another "shopping area" in Bacolod. The postal office, NFA, Negros Museum, Hall of Justice and LandBank regional office are just a stones throw away from each other.

Exactly @Jay. And i guess this had been feng shui(ed) before its inception. :)

Kon tanan mahuman na ini.My goodness.......puro shopping center na.Connecting the what we called the Downtown area, the Reclamation Area,888 Mall and the vacant lot in front of it.All is just a walking distance. It will turned into a massive shopping district...You can shop til you drop na in this case:banana::banana:

I guess Ayala Malls should take another peek at Bacolod's purchasing power. With the growing middle class esp. those employed among the many BPO's in the city and the resurgence of OFW remittances, I think Bacolod is ready for the next wave of devts. SM is already here , I hope Ayala Malls will follow suit.:)

I prefer the Alabang Town Center concept if ever Ayala will put up a mall next to their Ayala NorthPoint property. For Bacolod/Negros Occ. to have the CBD concept, just like the ones in Cebu and Bonifacio Global City, give it around 10-20 more years. We need more foreign and local direct investments to get the nod of the Ayalas. Thats why Bing should focus on this one and not his "flying school" thing.:)

Everything will come into place if business and political climates are inviting. Businesswise, we still need a certified international seaport. WIth the squabbling between BREDCO and Bing's admin, they are giving the wrong signal to potential investors. Thats why if the old Bacolod airport be developed into an industrial estate or an export processing zone, then I can say that Bacolod is indeed on the right track. By then, business will just drop like rainfall.:)

61st PAL Interclub in Sugarlandia

THE Philippine Airlines Interclub, the country's largest golf event, returns to Negros Occidental for its 61st championships slated February 20 to March 8, 2008.

The popular tournament, widely acknowledged as the country's national clubs championship, has already attracted a field of 161 teams- surpassing last year's roster of 141 teams.

A major change in the tournament is the extension of Seniors’ play to four days in order to accommodate the record field.

Joining hands to formally launch the 61st PAL Interclub during the First Team Captains' Meeting recently are Mark Gaston, general manager of Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club (NOGCC); Jess Garcia, Interclub vice-chairman; Domingo Duerme, Interclub chairman; Panio Torre, president of NOGCC; and Horacio Ramos, general manager of Bacolod Golf and Country Club.

Both host clubs are currently undergoing renovation in preparation for the tournament.

Construction magnate eyeing port operations in Bacolod

Property developer R-II Builders is eyeing a port operations project in Bacolod City , its chairman Reghis Romero II said yesterday.

“We are looking into Bacolod …With our experience in port operations, we can convert the domestic into an international port. (There are) industries that we are tied up with that we can bring here,” he said.

Romero, national president of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders’ Association, was in Bacolod City in a meeting with the CREBA-Negros Chapter headed by Eddie Pestaño.

R-II Builders owns and operates the Harbour Centre Port Terminal, a modern port situated within the 79-hectare Manila Harbour Centre, a development project which included the former Smokey Mountain garbage dump site.

absolutely!!! Bacolod is so HOT when it comes to inestors...but the thing is, they should settle with Atty. Palanca, the developer of BREDCO so that they can push through whatever plans they have for the City. They should respect Mr. Palanca as the one who made the Port of Bacolod competitive.

People of Bacolod are really divided in this issue.

This issue is so boring, but IMO opinion, as long as the City will not spend tremendous amount for the maintenance of the old airport, then i wanna give tis project a try.

Lea helps GK build dreams
BY CARLA GOMEZ

“There are people who are more blessed, so sharing blessings is never ever a bad thing with those who don't have that much,” said internationally acclaimed singer Lea Salonga Saturday.

Salonga sang to a jampacked crowd of more than 7,000 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum in Bacolod City Saturday night at a concert organized by Gawad Kalinga to raise funds to build more houses for the poor in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental.

Gawad Kalinga is all about “building homes, building dreams”, said Salonga, who traces her roots to Pulupandan, Negros Occidental.

She told the DAILY STAR her mother, Ligaya Alcantara Imutan, was the daughter of Leo Imutan, a vice mayor of Pulupandan town who briefly took over as mayor.

And the statue of a woman carrying a “bilao (basket)” on her head in the Pulupandan town plaza is that of her grandmother, Carmen Alcantara Imutan, Salonga said.

At her concert, Salonga said it was a special night for her to perform in Bacolod because it was like a family reunion with a lot of her relatives from Pulupandan in the audience.

Salonga said she was told there was an Imutan Street in Pulupandan and she would appreciate it if someone sent her a photo of it.

She was accompanied by her mother, Ligaya, and brother Gerard Salonga, who conducted the orchestra at her concert.

Bobby Magalona, GK provincial director, said funds raised from the Salonga concert will be used to build more houses for the poor this year.

He said since GK began in Negros Occidental in 2001 they have built 1,300 houses in 33 sites all over the province.

They plan on building 1,000 more houses this year, the largest number of which will be at Purok Riverside, Banago in Bacolod City with about 400, he said.

What is unique about the Banago project is that it will be an inter-faith effort participated in by Catholic and Protestant groups, he said.

And Magalona said he was happy with the unprecedented number of concert goers who trooped to the USLS coliseum for the Salonga performance and to also help GK's work.

Traffic snarled along North Drive leading to USLS Saturday night as concert goers struggled to get to Salonga's performance on time.

The multi-awarded Salonga, who won Tony, Laurence Olivier, Outer Critics Circle and Drama Desk Awards in London and the United States for her role as Kim in the musical Miss Saigon, wowed the audience with her songs that ranged from Tagalog favorites to musical theater numbers, and the Ilonggo song “Ay Ay Kalisod” .

Also performing with her was Ilonggo singer Jed Madela who drew a rousing applause for his rendition from Phantom of the Opera.

Salonga told the DAILY STAR “Singing is my job and my first love – I love the opportunity to do both.”

She and her husband moved back to the Philippines from the United States in 2005 and she loves being home, Salonga said.

Salonga is married to Robert Charles Chien, whom she met while doing Flower Drum Song . They have a daughter, Beverly Nicole, born on May 16 , 2006 and is named after Salonga's late mother-in-law , Beverly Chien.

They moved to the Philippines because her husband heads the media department of the firm he is working for in the country, she said.

Salonga said she does not want to leave the Philippines because she feels very well taken care of and her privacy is respected when it needs to be.

Salonga, who just finished playing Fantine in the musical Les Misérables on Broadway, said she will star in the lead role in Broadway Asia Entertainment's Asian tour of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella that kicks off in Manila on July 29.*CPGomez
