Good thing to do at night…
Stroll down lover’s lane (the lagoon) at night! It’s so romantic!
Insider’s tip…
Ride the jeepney to exotic Silay! It’s only PHP10/USD0.25 and beats a taxi for me!
Must buys…
Just take a sugar cane from the highways here! They’re the best souvenirs! Even better, they’re free!
Must eats…
What would Bacolod be without its delicious Chicken Inasal?
If Bacolod was a fruit it would be…
A banana. At first it looks dull, but when you open it up and eat it, Bacolod is just as sweet as the banana!
If Bacolod was twinned with a city in the world, it would be twinned with…
Salt Lake City, USA. Bacolod is a hot, tropical version.

i got this from NBSA thread posted by NG...namian lang ko thats why gin post ko

^^ Let me guess... from CebuPacific's Smile magazine. :)
You may also contribute in Cebu Pacific's Smile Magazine too. :okay:

Just found this old bacolod city picture ... wala pa ang reclaimation.

Nice find,Doc!Thanks! Kanami sang Bacolod Public Plaza before pero nami today if it just being maintained it properly.I'm wondering if there are still some trees present from the photo but difinitely those coconut trees are not in there anymore.

It looked good then because everything was so orderly. Now everything there is so chaotic and our ______ mayor has no shame in posting his ugly streamers and posters with his picture everywhere including the once beautiful plaza.

Local group to put up P3-B ethanol plant

By Donnabelle L. Gatdula
Phil. Star, Sunday, February 3, 2008

Negros Green Energy Resources Corp. (NGERC), controlled by the Peñalosa group, will undertake a P3-billion ethanol processing project in Negros Occidental, a top company official said.

NGERC executive vice president and general manager Andy Reyes told The STAR that the integrated ethanol project will rise on a 15,000-hectare property in Sagay town.

A refinery complex, he said, will be built with an annual capacity output of 100 million liters year.

Reyes said after thorough study and research, they have decided to use sweet sorghum as feedstock to produce ethanol which will eventually be used as fuel.

“It was proven in the United States and Brazil that sweet sorghum is a very efficient feedstock. It grows faster than sugar cane. We can harvest sweet sorghum in 100 days compared to sugar cane which needs 265 days,” he said.

The expected produce from the refinery can cover the five percent mandated ethanol blend on gasoline products, equivalent to annual requirement of 200 million liters.

He said they are now in the process of finalizing the project study. “We will be ready with the results of the project feasibility next month.”

Reyes said if everything goes as planned, they could start the construction within the next six months and complete the project in two years.

Reyes said they are also in talks with several possible joint venture partners from the United States and India.

Sweet sorghum is similar to grain sorghum with sugar-rich stalks. Being a water-use efficient crop, sweet sorghum has the potential to be a good alternative feedstock for ethanol production.

The plant’s main advantage is the efficiency with which it uses water, its capacity to survive in saline soils and its stalks are very rich in sugar.

Early last year, President Arroyo signed into law Republic Act 9367, also known as the Biofuels Act of 2006, that promotes the use of alternative transport fuels.

The law seeks to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuels with due regard to the protection of public health, the environment and natural ecosystems consistent with the country’s sustainable economic growth that would expand opportunities for livelihood.

It mandates the use of biofuels as a measure to develop and utilize indigenous renewable and sustainably-sourced clean energy sources to reduce dependence on imported oil.

Biofuel refers to bioethanol and biodiesel and other fuels made from biomass and primarily used for automotive, thermal and power generation with quality specifications in accordance with the Philippine National Standards (PNS).

Thanks @NG for this great news. Considering the amount of time and money one spent just to go back&forth to hospitals outside the city, this one from RMC is really a relief. Now we have the modern facilities plus the expertise in dealing with such life threatening ailments. Its beyond doubt that Bacolod's medical services & hospital sectors are going hi-tech and world class standards nowadays.

A Bigger & Better Bacolaodiat

The Chinese New Year will be ushered in Bacolod City with more than just the usual pyrotechnics that highlight an occasion. In the Feb. 7-10 Chinese New Year celebration, now popularly called BacoLaodiat, which combines the name of the city and laodiat, the Fookien word for “happy celebration, a symphony of lights and sparks and a parade of lanterns inspired by the Chinese Spring festival rituals will be among the activities that will usher in the festive occasion.

“This will be a grander BacoLaodiat filled with big surprises as we have expanded the celebration to four days,” said businessman William Ong, chairman of this year's celebration. The Symphony of Sparks and Lights, Ong said, will be staged in 10 sites in the city where the fireworks will be simultaneously held. Pyrotechnics in Chinese tradition, ward off the bad spirits while the lantern parade, part of an ancient practice, has been intended as a supplication for favorable weather and guidance for the year and eventually as a symbol for respect of God. The lanterns will be displayed at the Capitol Park .

The festival has been formally organized with the establishment of BacoLaodiat, Inc., which Ong said, ensures its continuity in the future.

The lantern parade, organizers said, features the 12 Chinese zodiac animal symbols depicted in giant lanterns which will reflect the aspirations of Tsinoy groups all over the province of reaching out to each other. Participating in the celebration are 34 Negros Tsinoy organizations. The Tsinoy groups, along with the Bacolod City and the Negros Occidental Provincial Governments are extending all-out support to the festival.

The sparks-and-light extravaganza, Ong said, features the synchronized lighting up of animal installations after which he and Mayor Evelio Leonardia, will declare the opening of the Chinese New Year Festival.

The activities this year, focused on the theme, “Strength in Unity”, have been transferred from the Bacolod Plazato a more fitting place, the Bacolod Shoppin Center , dubbed as the ‘Chinatown' of Bacolod , now an icon of Chinese-Filipino partnership.

The lantern parade and the grand fireworks display will be preceded by a city-wide dragon and lion dance festival performed by volunteers of Amity and Chamber Fire Brigades and the opening of the Chopsticks Alley at 6th Street, which features colorful lanterns, kiosks and rolling carts offering popular Chinese-Filipino cuisine, souvenirs and other art and craft items.

Bacolaodiat also features a tour of the three major temples in Bacolod City – the Yuan Tzong at Burgos Extension, the Yong Tho Taoist Temple at La Salle Avenue and the Fa Zhang Temple at Narra Extension.

Also lined up in the festival calendar are the art show, the Chinese cultural presentation at SM City on Friday at 4 p.m., the Tsinoy Olympics of native and ethnic games – like kadang, yoyo playing, chopsticks relay, Chinese checkers and other games for children and adults – the Chow King-sponsored night and the Kinengkoy comedy spoof and musical show depicting Chinese trivia and traditions which will be capped by a band show.

On Saturday, a Chinese cooking competition will be held at Robinsons Place at 2 p.m. which will be followed by the lantern and street dancing competition among towns and cities and nearby provinces focusing on the integration into the mainstream of ethnic Chinese and the merging of the Fil-Sino cultures.

The last day will highlight the mall performances of Chinese street dance winners, the awarding ceremony and a grand celebrity night and fireworks.

We are inviting not only Chinese members of the community, Ong said, but also our Filipino brothers and sisters to spare some time from their important tasks and join us in these four days of celebration of unity.

Ong added they are hopeful that with the BacoLaodiat, the city can offer more attractions to its visitors on a year-round basis with the Chinese Festival serving as the first major celebration in the city – followed by the summer Panaad and the October MassKara.

Expressing optimism, the festival executive said the Chinese community looks forward to make the BacoLaodiat a bigger festival in the future, “hopefully to the level of MassKara Festival”.

Behind the BacoLaodiat

The BacoLaodiat, Inc., tasked with organizing the annual BacoLaodiat festival, is composed of Filipino-Chinese volunteers representing a cross-section of the community.

It is led by William Ong, founding Chairman and head of BacoLaodiat 2008 and the chairman of Negros Tsinoy. A businessman - importer who ventured for 35 years in Metro Manila, he is back to the city where his 888 China Town Square Mall will be opened soon. SSA MARKS GOLDEN YEAR

It's a season for counting blessings at St. Scholastica's Academy in Bacolod City which holds Golden Jubilee activities on Feb. 8-10 with the commemoration resuming on Feb. 28, the day when it was formally opened in 1958.

“The school has been greatly blessed,” says Sr. M. Lucy Togle, OSB, directress of the school which was opened in response to the request of Bacolod-based alumnae of St. Scholastica's College in Manila to bring to Scholastican education to the city.

As the SSA community gears for its celebration this month, Sr. Lucy looks at the past as reflections “of God's blessings”. We have gifted students, the parents of our students are cooperative and the alumnae association is very supportive of the programs and activities of the school, the directress said, adding: “Through the years, we have not experienced any difficulty because the parents and alumnae have always been around to help us.”

What started as a school of 207 pre-school and grade school pupils on its first campus – previously a market stall in front of the present Ceres North Terminal in Bacolod City — and, a year later, moving to it present site, St. Scholastica's Academy has grown by leaps and bounds. This schoolyear, it has 1,686 students, the biggest enrolment so far, with 47 grade school teachers and 25 others in the high school department and more than 30 members of the staff.

SSA, originally an all-girl educational institution, opened its doors to pre-school and grade school boys in 1988 with an enrolment of only four pupils. This schoolyear, a total of 283 boys registered in the grade school level and 17 others in the pre-school program. Sr. Lucy said the school will not open its high school department to boys despite the wishes of some sector for its extending its education for boys to the secondary level.

SSA Bacolod, founded by nuns from Germany is one of the 12 schools run by Benedictine sisters in the country, five of which are located in the Visayas, Lucy says.

It's education is anchored on the philosophy, Ora et Labora (Prayer and Labor), committed to “the formation of the total person in Christ” and emphasizing what is known among St. Scholasticans as 13 Benedictine values – Christ-centeredness, prayer and labor, obedience, humility, sense of community, service, hospitality, silence, stewardship, compassion, stability, good zeal and discipline.

The SSA brand of education has produced individuals who are outstanding in academics and co-curricular activities and are anchored on citizenship and civics as a result of the strong outreach activities students and pupils engage in, the directress points out. SSA students, Sr. Lucy says, have been at the forefront of academic, cultural art, sports and other competitions, always emerging in the Top Three. SSA also takes pride in being the first high school in Western Visayas to earn PAASCU accreditation – in 1969 – and since then both levels have been re-accredited by the agency, and later elevated in recent and current evaluations to five-year accreditation status.

Under its outreach program, SSA has adopted public schools in its vicinity for its academic extension and catechism programs. As early as the grade school, pupils are taught to share with fellow children under the learning-together program where pupils from adopted schools come to SSA on Saturdays.

As a result, the directress says, they have been told by teachers of Mandalagan Elementary School , a key outreach beneficiary of pupil remedial and computer education programs, that school performance in Department of Education evaluation has greatly improved. The academic outreach also includes teacher development and tutorials. High school students also render their tutorial services to outreach children under the Baylohanay Manggad, or Trading treasures program, where they also mutually share life's experiences.

SSA has also a social action center, Kauswagan, established in 1976 to supplement the school's community services, promoting, among others, spiritual renewals, human development trainings, short-term courses and group meetings.

Part of its mission is to provide education for financially handicapped families, thus it has been offering scholarship programs for deserving children. At present, sister Lucy said, the school has 36 scholarship grant recipients in both elementary and high school levels and send 15 students to various colleges under the German-assisted Philbert scholarship program.

SSA has also been actively involved in administering the Holy Family High School , previously the Holy Family Vocational School in Sum-ag, to provide children of poor families the opportunity to avail of good quality educational service.

Citing as an example of the remarkable sense of cooperation of members of the SSA community, Sr. Lucy recounts that SSA has an annual medical mission – with beneficiaries numbering as many as 2,000. “Parents, alumnae, the faculty, the community and students are all involved in this activity,” she says, adding that in its recent mission, about 40 doctors and 30 nurses, many of whom are parents of the students, volunteered their services.

She underscores the active involvement of the SSA alumnae association in community activities, particularly in its donations of much-needed and expensive medical equipment for the Western Visayas Regional Hospital and its medical mission in the past few years. The association has been very quiet about its activities but they are doing something to help the community, Sister Lucy says, apparently as a result of their Scholastican education that has taught them the need to care for others, finding joy in doing it as a spontaneous act in their life. She cites that the 2007 medical mission, dubbed “Aloha” conducted by medical personnel from Hawaii , benefited more than 6,000 Negrenses. Many alumnae today, she adds, are occupying leadership positions here and abroad, including those engaged in community and civic service and non-governmental organizations.

As SSA celebrates its 50th year, Sister Lucy points out that they are also looking forward to updating and further strengthening school curricula to include greater emphasis on multi-media and inter-disciplinary schematic webbing as she adds that today computer literacy among St. Scholasticans is very high, with a 1:1 computer-student ratio in computer classes.

All these, she says, are in keeping with a wholistic education that we are providing our students, the directress stresses, which is reflected in all activities we undertake – both in the classroom and outside, including in field trips and special celebrations on campus, where we encourage learning experiences not only in one or two areas but in as many disciplines in an activity.

As SSA marks its golden anniversary, focused on the theme “Through 50 Years – Soaring High and Reaching Out”, Sr. Lucy reiterates a mission and a prayer: that they can realize by the end of 2008, the setting up the SSA Golden Jubilee Gawad Kalinga Village, which will have a total of 50 homes.

“We have the money now but what we need is a lot within the city where the village will stand,” Sr. Lucy says, adding that she is praying that God will touch the heart of civic-minded Negrenses to offer a small parcel of their property for the eventual home of 50 families “and make a big difference in their lives”.

“With all the graces and blessings we have received from God, in return we are building 50 homes on our 50th year,” Sr. Lucy further says.

Activities

An institutional mass, a cultural show, field demonstration, motorcade, a fun run and an awards and recognition night are among the highlights of the Golden Jubilee activities of St. Scholastica's Academy.

The major activities will be held on Feb. 8 and 9 and Feb. 28, the foundation day.

The Feb. 28 activities will include a prater service at the Shopping Center, where a marker will be unveiled.

A fun run will follow the prayer service participated in by parents and their children, with prizes for the first 10 families with hands clasped as they cross the finish line.

A motorcade will be held after the fun run featuring representations of the 13 Benedictine Values and countries where OSB Nuns have missions – including Argentina , Australia , Brazil , Bulgaria , China , Germany Korea, India , Italy , the Philippines and African nations.

Capping the anniversary activities will be the awards and recognition program which will pay tribute to individuals for their contribution to the growth of SSA. Among the recipients are the Montelibano, Locsin and Torres families, for donating parts of their land to the OSB Nuns for their educational mission.

The Feb. 8 activities will start with an institutional mass. Jubilarians will then be feted with a welcome program followed by the awarding of outstanding employees.

The Tuesday highlights also include games, exhibits, booths, plant and pet shows and rides, the alumnae homecoming program and tribute to be capped by the matinee of the grand production, Oro Plata, Scholastica directed by Rene Hinojales.

Wednesday activities include the field demonstration, a girls' football cup, the alumnae homecoming luncheon and the Oro, Plata, Scholastica gala presentation.

Bacolod students champs
in two national contests
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Two Bacolod City universities bagged top national awards over the weekend.

A University of Saint La Salle team was the national winner of the 4th Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards, while a University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos student won the PalaECEpan Quiz Bee in Cebu City Saturday, Maria Jane Paredes, Smart public affairs manager for the Visayas and Mindanao , said.

The theme of the Sweep Innovation and Excellence Awards held at the SM Cebu Trade Hall Feb. 1 and 2 was “Going Wireless for Disaster Preparedness”.

The USLS innovation entry that bested 58 others from around the country was on a “Geo Specific Public Warning System Using Cell Broadcasting”, Edgar Altarejos Jr., chairman of the USLS Electronics Communication Engineering Department, said.

The USLS fourth year ECE students on the winning team are Delman Alagao – team leader, and Francis Xavier Parcon, John Kimwell Laluma, Paul Edward Alvarez and Mark Paolo Salada, members.

The team won P500,000 as first prize and a grant of P500,000 will be given to USLS, Paredes said.

Meanwhile, PalaECEpan Quiz Bee champion was Edward Warren Torres, a 5th year ECE student at UNO-R whose mentor is engineer Christopher Alunan, she said.

Torres won P40,000 and a cellular phone from Smart, Paredes said.

The PalaECEpan competition tested the intellectual prowess of the smartest engineering students from SWEEP partner schools, she said.

The annual SWEEP Innovation and Excellence Awards is organized by Smart Communications Inc. as part of the company's Smart Wireless Engineering Education Program (SWEEP), an industry-academe partnership program that helps raise the level of technology and engineering education in the country, she added

Chinese painting exhibit
opens at mall Wednesday
As part of the BacoLaodiat Festival, SM City in Bacolod City will sponsor a Chinese Painting Exhibit titled “Welcoming Spring” that will open at the SM Entertainment Center, North Wing at 5 p.m., Wednesday, and will run until Feb. 10.

The ribbon-cutting will be followed by a Chinese Brush Painting demonstration by the artist Professor Tsai Shiu-Yuin (Arsenia Lim), Lily Go, BacoLaodiat Inc. director, said yesterday.

Tsai maintains strong bonds to three places: in China - her ancestral roots can be traced back to Jin-Jiang County in Fujian Province ; in Taiwan - where she received her university education and intensive art training; and in Manila , her birthplace and her family's current residence, Go said.

She first learned Chinese painting under Filipino-Chinese painter Yang Keng-Tang, and continued to study painting and calligraphy while a History major at the National Taiwan University , Go added.

In Taiwan , she formally trained with flower and bird master Yu Zong-Lin, landscape master Hu Nien-Zhu, as well as National Artist Lin Yu-San; while she learned calligraphy from masters Ren Bo-Wu, Chen Zi-He and Lee You.

In the mid-1960s, upon her return to the Philippines and having graduated from the National Taiwan University , she taught Chinese literature, history as well as painting at St. Stephen's High School. She then pursued a full-time career as Chinese painting teacher by establishing workshops, which is now on its 42nd year in 2008. Tsai Shiu-Yuin launched her Chinese painting classes, Shui Mo , at the Yuchengco Museum .

Tsai held her first solo exhibition in the Philippines in 1967 and since, had about seven other solo shows, and participated in exhibits here and abroad.

The “Welcoming Spring” exhibit at SM will feature her works and 16 of her students, Celia Chao, Sofia Chen, Mimi Cu, Jeannie Chua, Kathleen Lim, Teodora Ng, Linda Au Ong, Willie Pieh, Bertha Sy, Rosita Tam, Bee Hua Tan, Santan Tan, Lily Ty, Ban Hui Uy, Mary Uy, and Molly Yap, all members of the “Self Actualization Painter's Club” founded by Tsai, Go added.*

Viva Films seeking
investors for IPO

Entertainment production company Viva Communications Inc. is seeking investors in Bacolod City for its initial public offering of common shares on Feb. 20 to 27.
Viva, led by its chairman Vic del Rosario, held an IPO roadshow at the L'Fisher Hotel Thursday, with Eduardo Francisco, president BDO Capital and Investment Corp., Viva's lead underwriter for the offering.

“We want it (the IPO) to be broad-based that's why we chose Bacolod in addition to Davao and Cebu ,” Francisco said.
Francisco said they expect to raise P50 to P100 million from the provinces they have visited. The company aims to raise P1.2 billion to P1.8 billion from its IPO.

At the roadshow, Del Rosario said Viva aims to maintain its dominance in local film production and is projected to make “big money” in the pay TV business. The company's immediate plan is to create three new cable channels between 2008 and 2009, starting with the Viva Mega in July.

Viva's business strategy, he said, is to sustain its position as the dominant content provider in all media platforms and continue to maximize the use of film library by taking advantage of advances in media technology.*NLG

Stores urged to provide
green lane counters

A resolution enjoining all malls, supermarkets and grocery stores to provide green lane counter to prioritize consumers who use biodegradable/environment friendly containers was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.

Proposed by Councilor Greg Gasataya, the resolution said Section 48 (10-11) of R.A. 9003 strictly prohibits the manufacture or use of non-environmentally acceptable materials, and requires biodegradable and environment friendly materials for bagging and packing as part of the solid waste management program.

The resolution said the law encourages the implementation of a reward system for those who promote and patronize environmentally sound programs and projects.

To efficiently reduce residual waste, it said, the use of plastic should be regulated, and biodegradable containers such as bayong, green bags, carton boxes, non-plastic sack or bags, and sturdy reusable shopping bags.

The SP also passed a resolution requesting the Committees on Laws and Good Government, Ways and Means, Finance, and the City Treasurer to review City Ordinance 215, Series of 1998 on the grant of 45 percent discount on cinema amusement tax to effect the necessary adjustment for which they are due.

The resolution authored by Councilor Homer Bais says that since it was enacted in 1998, C.O. 215 has not been periodically reviewed as required in the ordinance.

C.O. 215 provides that the incentive shall be reviewed by the SP every two years.*CGS

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod approved on first, second, third and final reading an ordinance temporarily suspending the efficacy of existing city ordinances for the routing of all cargo trucks from the south going to the north for 50 days, effective Jan. 31, 2008 .

The ordinance was proposed by Councilor Wilson Gamboa Jr. following the closure starting Jan. 31 of the 40-year-old PHHC bridge along the circumferential road in Brgy. Villamonte, Bacolod City by the Department of Public Works and Highway. The rehabilitation and repair of the bridge will last for 50 days.

The ordinance provides that the Committee on Transportation chaired by Gamboa, together with all the stakeholders will continuously study other alternative and more viable routes within the period.

It also provides that strict measures against overloading of sugarcane and that trucks entering Bacolod City without proper signal lights and whose loads of sugarcane are not properly stocked should not be allowed to enter the city.

The ordinance requires that a report should be submitted to the SP after seven days.*CGS

Koreans air concerns to Bacolod mayor
Danny Fajardo
http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20080204116147.html

BACOLOD CITY — A group of Korean students have asked Mayor Evelio Leonardia to increase police visibility in schools and other areas in the city frequented by the foreigners.

The groups’s request was submitted by Oh Jae Yong, president and chief executive officer of Phil-Korea at the La Salle Language Center; Charlie Sin, general manager for OK Academy; Seong Jin Kang, chief operations officer of Sky 21 English Institute; Deok Jin Jang, principal of Jason English Language School, and Mylene Sison, also of Phil-Korea.

They also asked the mayor to facilitate the scheduling of direct flights from South Korea to Bacolod City, and therefore make the city "foreign-friendly."

They said this would help increase the number of Korean students who would take up English courses in the city and encourage more Korean golfers and tourists to visit Bacolod City.

Koreans visiting the city would also find it convenient to be guided by signages with Korean Hangul translations at the airport, the students said.

The Koreans expressed appreciation for the city government’s immediate response to their request for additional police patrolling the areas of La Salle Avenue and Gallardo Street.

The mayor said the Koreans had earlier sought police assistance because of the series of hold-ups which had victimized Korean students.

Additional streetlights along Lacson Street, 6th Street, and B.S. Aquino Drive had also been requested for security purposes.

i think they should not only check on the trucks, they should also give emphasis on the tricycles and trisikads plying along the main streets of Bacolod, they should also implement "no jay walking" (though sometimes I'm guilty of it) and set an area for loading and unloading of passengers.

Second visit of St. Therese to Bacolod

PREPARATIONS are underway for the second visit of the pilgrim relics of St. Therese of the Child Jesus set March 4-7 in Bacolod city.

The relics, venerated by Catholics around the world, will arrive at the Bacolod port at 2.30 p.m., March 4, according to Sergie Tan, liaison officer of the organizing group for the visit.
From the pier, the relics will be carried on a caravan to the San Sebastian cathedral for the welcome rites with Msgr. Vicente Navarra.

It will stay at the Carmelite Monastery until March 6, when it leaves for Kabankalan in the morning and will be back at 5 p.m. the same day. It will leave for Malacanang, the next stop of the pilgrimage of the relics, on March 7, Tan also said.

Masses and veneration schedules will be announced later.

As part of the preparations, catechesis classes on the life and teachings of the Carmelite nun who is one of the 33 doctors of the church, have been launched.

Classes for the leaders from parishes and chaplaincies of the Bacolod vicariates are held at the Diocesan Lay Formation Center at San Antonio Abad parish church, Bacolod.

Classes continue on Feb.6, 13, 20 and 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 nn, according to Teresa Causing of Lovers of St. Therese group.

The same classes will also be held at the Agape House of the Carmelite Monastery in Mandalagan for representatives of schools, government offices, business organizations. They are scheduled on Feb 8, 15, 22, 29, from 2 to 5 p.m.

Causing said the classes are designed for people who can cascade what they learn to others in their respective places.

St. Therese is known for her "Doctrine of the Little Way of Spiritual Childhood" which has been acclaimed by theologians as the sure and simple way to salvation. Briefly, the doctrine teaches people to do small, ordinary things in extraordinary ways with great love.

She had entered the Carmel convent in the small French town of Liseux in the late 1888 at 15, and lived a cloistered life until she died at 24.

While she was sick, she was ordered by her superiors to write about her life so they would have something to fill up her obituary when she died. As a custom, Carmelites circulate an obituary of their deceased sisters to all their convents across the world.

Therese's writings attracted readers outside the convent, and was eventually published as a book entitled "The Story of a Soul."

Mainly on the strength of this book, she was declared a saint 23 years after she died , a record for its brevity between death and canonization. Also because of this book, she was declared a doctor of the church - the youngest and one of only three women in the elite company of saints whose teachings have influenced the church.

PBA execs here today for All Star Weekend buildup

A GROUP of officials of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) are here today to kickoff promotions for the staging here in Bacolod City of the 2008 PBA All Star Weekend to be staged at the West Negros College Gym.

The PBA group, headed by Willy Marcial, assitant to PBA commissioner Sonny Barrios, is also slated to make a courtesy call on Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia at City Hall before meeting representatives of West Negros College later in the day at the Pandanon Valley Resort in Murcia, Negros Occidental.

This will be the first time Bacolod City will host the annual PBA spectacle and awarding ot the hosting rights to the city is being credited to the efforts of Leonardia and Dr. Suzette Agustin, president of West Negros College.

Meanwhile, former Colegio San Agustin-BAcolod varsity standout Teodorico "Boyet" Fernandez III of Valladolid, Negros Occidental, who now mentors Sta. Lucia Realty in the PBA told SunStar Bacolod in a phone interview last night that he is happy the All Star Weekend is finally coming to Bacolod City. "It's long overdue and I'm sure the Negrense basketball fans will come out and support the All Star activities this year," Fernandez said.

Asked to comment on his team's chances in the ongoing semis of the PBA Smart Philippine Cup, Fernandez, a nursing graduate of CSAB, said " I really think the boys deserve a slot in the finals after having shown their desire to win and their all out efforts in this series when everybody steps up everytime we play."

Asked about the incident at the end of Game 3 against Alaska when Aces coach Tim Cone refused to shake his hand after the game, the unassuming Fernandez who is only in his second conference as Sta. Lucia mentor said: "I have no problem with that; I still respect him as coach."(HCV)

Baylon off to Korea Olympic qualifying event

JOHN Baylon, the eight-time Southeast Asian Games judo gold medalist from Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, spearheads a six-man RP judo team slated to compete in the Asian Judo Championship, an Olympic qualifying event scheduled this April in South Korea.

The Negrense judoka, who was one of the major awardees of the Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) Bacolod during its 2007 SCOOP Awards held last December 29, 2007 at the Casa Linda of Bascon Hotel, is the first and only Asian athlete to win eight consecutive gold medals in the biennial SEA Games.
He will be joined by two-time SEAG gold medalist Gilbert Ramirez, Fil-Japanese Tomohiko Hoshira, nancy Quillotes and two other fgemale judokas who are still to be named by the national association next month.

"Medyo mahirap ang mga kalaban dahil sa buong Asia yun," said the 6-foot-1 Negrense during the other day's weekly Scoop at Kamayan United Nations Avenue branch in Manila.

"But I know that the Filipinos are capable of qualifying given the proper preparations and international exposure," the Negrense judoka reiterated.

Baylon is a veteran of the Seoul Olympics in 1988 and Barcelona in 1992 but he took those Olympic berths by virtue of winning gold medals in the SEA Games.(HCV)

Tipon down but not out of Olympics
By Henry C. Villalva

FIFTEENTH Asian Games bantamweight boxing gold medalist Joan Tipon of Barangay Banago, Bacolod City executed the game plan to the letter but still fell short against his Thai rival last Friday in the semis of the 1st Asian Olympic qualifying event in Bangkok.

But the Negrense former Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) child prodigy has nothing to be ashamed of in his 9-6 loss to the former Athens Olympics silver medalist Wworapoj Pechkoom. According to 1992 Hiroshima Asiad gold medalist Elias Recaido, Jr. of Bacolod City who is now one of the RP team coaches, Tipon was not able to fight dictating his own style since the judges were easy on the opponent ("magaan ang mga judges sa kanya. Pag nag dikitan may puntos kaagad ang kalaban. Samantala yung mga ibang klarong puntos ni Joan ay hindi na credit sa kanya,").

Manila mediamen covering the bout detailed that the Thai repeatedly clinched and even wrestled Tipon to the canvass, knowing that his tactic was working and that he was given the point whenever the two boxers go to the counterpunching mode.

"So disappointing was the scoring made by the judges- J. Anyos of Hungary, Takeo Tachikawa of Japan, M. Budkiv of Russia, Muhammad Zahra of Syria and Chin Jing-Ming of Taiwan- that at least three clean shots by Tipon to the head of Worapoj were ignored," Tempo reporter Willie Caballes wrote.

Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) president Manny Lopez was quick to apologize for RP PLDT-Smart Boxing Team's defeat. "This is just a temporary setback for the team. The ABAP offers no excuses. We will try our very best to rebound in the second qualifying in Kazakhstan in March," Lopez said.

"My gut feel is that Joan (Tipon) will qualify in Kazakhstan and then proceed to exact revenge on the Thai in Beijing in August," said an unperturbed teammate Albert Pabila of Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City who came home with a bronze from last year's Southeast Asian Games in Thailand.

Four of Tipon's teammates who also fought in the Bangkok qualifying event- flyweight Violito Payla, featherweight Orlando Tacuyan, Jr., lightweight Genebert Basadre and light welterweight Adam Steven Field- lost in their first round bouts.

"Bantay Banwa" to help address Bacolod traffic problems

Bacolod City (4 February) -- Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia with Councilor Wilson "Jun" Gamboa, chairman ofn the committee on traffic management, met with the members of the Bantay Banwa recently to listen to their suggestions on how to minimize the traffic problem of the city.

Bantay Banwa is a private group composed of businessmen and planters in Bacolod City whose motto is: "Stop Complaining, Do Something".

The meeting was focused on decongesting traffic in the city, particularly along Lacson Street, the business street of the city. This route will be greatly affected by the continuous flow of incoming and outgoing vehicles, private and public utility, due to the New Bacolod-Silay Airport of International Standards.

Gamboa said he is planning to propose to the SP an ordinance to give drivers the power to police their own ranks. Gamboa compares it to the cities of Makati, Quezon, Cebu and some of our neighboring cities in the province of Negros Occidental with such ordinance. (CMO/PIA)

Post here your Valentine's Day greetings

Bacolod is so honored to have her for the 2nd time around. :)

TUP, WNC Share Top Honors in Park Volleyball
Technological University of the Philippines (TUP)-Talisay and the West Negros College (WNC) share the limelight in winning the men and women’s divisions of the 1st NOVA Inter-College P.E. (Men and Women) Park Volleyball Festival at University of St. La Salle Football Field Saturday.
In the men’s bracket, Bago City College placed second followed by WNC-B and WNC-A to complete the four-team winners.

In the women’s side, Bago City College Team-C took the second spot and Bago City College-B placed third and University of St. La Salle-BSN 2C placed fourth.

Roger A. Banzuela, NOVA president and league organizer said, the 132 teams that joined the tournament is a record by itself that can be considered in the Guinness Book of World Record.

He said, he will forward the record to International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) for disposiion.

Park Volleyball, a new kind of volleyball games for recreation and competition being promoted by FIVB thru National Sports Association, like Philippine Volleyball Federation and NOVA.

Banzuela did not expect the response by the different schools as he expects only 100 teams, 50 men and 50 women. But record showed those 64 men and 68 women teams made their presence felt during the opening ceremony.

The different teams played simultaneously in 35 volleyball courts installed at the USLS Football Field. The teams came from host University of St. La Salle, West Negros College, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, AMA Computer College, Kabankalan Catholic College, Binalbagan Catholic College, and Negros State College of Agriculture, ABE Business College, ASCO Bible College, Carlos Hilado Memorial State College, La Salle Tech and TUP. This coincides with the sponsoring NOVA 30th year of existence in the active service to youth and the community.

NOVA has been holding continued volleyball sports program in different localities, aside from holding a competition annually in cooperation with the Lopue’s Group of Companies.

With the success of Park Volleyball, Banzuela said, he will introduce the same to other willing groups to get involved in the sports where the rules of the game is not so strict, provided it does not interfere with the ongoing play.*

GK working to make Negros first world
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Gawad Kalinga is uniting Negrenses to help build Negros Occidental into a first world province, GK founder Tony Meloto said yesterday.

Meloto was in Negros Occidental yesterday for the turnover of 26 houses to their beneficiaries in the 9-hectare GK Hope Village in Barangay Concepcion, Talisay City , yesterday.

With the support of Talisay Mayor Eric Saratan GK aims to build 300 houses in the Hope Village , Meloto added. Seventy of the 300 houses have so far been built, Meloto said.

Of the 26 houses turned over, 12 came from the family of Alberto Balcells that has committed to build 50 houses, he said.

Aside from the Balcells family, several other families have committed to build houses at the Hope Village , Meloto said, citing among others the Lizares and Lacson clans.

Saratan, on the other hand, is committed to making Hope Village a first class community by providing additional amenities, and the Women in Travel are planting fruit trees to make the area environment friendly, he added.

Another GK Village for another 300 families will also be built in Barangay Catabla, Talisay, on a 5-hectare property, Meloto added.

There are GK villages with an average of 100 families per village in 20 towns and cities in Negros Occidental, he said.

“We hope to double this in 2008,” Meloto said.

Our target is to build GK villages in all of the towns and cities of Negros Occidental, he said.

The GK Negros Occidental provincial director is Bobby Magalona.

“GK unites the rich and poor, government and civil society, Catholics and evangelicals in Negros Occidental,” he said.

“It also inspires Negrenses abroad to help build a first-world, first-class province by raising dignity in the quality of life of its poorest communities,” Meloto said.*CPG

The blessing and grand opening of Job's Resto and Grill
located at the Valderama Compound, Bacolod was held recently. It is owned by young entrepreneur couple Louie and Thea Kilayko. The affair also marked the birthday of their energetic mother Jean Torre Rivera.

The Torre sisters came in full force.

The resto was named after the couple's youngest son Job, who is the apple of the Kilayko siblings.

The place was bursting with guests, while the celebrator was busy entertaining the “Golden Ladies” and I, as friends of the young couple, were also busy welcoming their friends. Delia Tad-y and I had a grand time sampling all the specialties prepared.

At the entrance, an audio visual enticed the young ones, while inside, Dr. Gerardo Rivera and some of his colleagues were busy sampling the food.

Pamelo and Batchoy Alunan, Mary Ann Mirasol, and Maribel Torre with close friends from Riverside were also present.

Mangrove propagules planted

BACOLOD City - About 14,000 mangrove propagules were planted recently in barangays Inayawan and Caliling, in Cauayan, Negros Occidental.

The planting was part of the Technical Corporation for Grassroots Projects of the Japan International Cooperation Agency.

The activity, implemented through the Ikaw-Ako Japan-Negros Partnership for Environment Protection, was participated in by 460 students, and was in collaboration with the Southern Coastal Development Management Council, and the Technological University of the Philippines-Visayas.

Mangroves are terrestrial plants adapted to saltwater. They serve as habitat for commercially and ecologically significant fish species, and are essential in the rehabilitation of the coastal and marine resources.

Mangroves (generally) are trees and shrubs that grow in saline coastal habitats in the tropics and subtropics.

Mangroves protect the coast from erosion, surge storms, especially during hurricanes, and tsunamis. Their massive root system is efficient at dissipating wave energy.

Likewise, they slow down tidal water enough that its sediment is deposited as the tide comes in and is not re-suspended when the tide leaves, except for fine particles.

As a result, mangroves build their own environment. Because of the uniqueness of the mangrove ecosystems and their protection against erosion, they are often the object of conservation programs.

Despite their benefits, the protective value of mangroves is sometimes overstated. Wave energy is typically low in areas where mangroves grow, so their effect on erosion can only be measured in the long-term.

Their capacity to limit high-energy wave erosion is limited to events like storm surges and tsunamis. Erosion often still occurs on the outer sides of bends in river channels that wind through mangroves, just as new stands of mangroves are appearing on the inner sides where sediment is accreting.

Mangroves support unique ecosystems, especially on their intricate root systems. In areas where roots are permanently submerged, they may host a wide variety of organisms, including algae, barnacles, oysters, sponges, and bryozoans, which all require a hard substratum for anchoring while they filter feed.

Mangrove crabs improve the nutritional quality of the mangal muds for other bottom feeders by mulching the mangrove leaves.

In at least some cases, export of carbon fixed in mangroves is important in coastal food webs. The habitats also host several commercially important species of fish and crustacea.

In Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, and India, mangrove plantations are grown in coastal regions for the benefits they provide to coastal fisheries and other uses. Despite replanting programs, over half the world's mangroves have been lost in recent times.

@NGProf: With two world class golf courses on its backyard, Bacolod and Negros Occ. had always been a favorite playground among the Phils.' golf afficionados. Thats why our two golf courses are always considered as venues for top golf tournaments for over a decade(i guess) already.:)

@Smile, if thats the case then we are seeing a commercial/business emergence in that area. Good for Bacolod and of course our kasimanwas. That area, once a bit sleepy, has now awaken and can be a perfect alternative to the business/entertainment/resto strip of Lacson St.:banana:

Actually mig theres one golf course in VICMICO in Victorias City, soon Sipalay they have their own version of golf course.

Southern Ladies golf kicks off in Bacolod (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/feb/06/yehey/sports/20080206spo7.html)

CRYSTAL SHIN begins her quest for a third straight title in the 45th Southern Ladies golf tournament which kicks off at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin, Murcia, Negros Occidental.

Shin is expected to face a tough challenge from ICTSI’s Chihiro Ikeda, the current toast of local ladies golf with victories in row.

Another strong contender for the title in the 54-hole tournament is SEA Games silver medalist Anya Tanpinco, who will take advantage of her familiarity of the course.

Shin dominated the 41st staging in 2006 at her home course in Del Monte, pooling a three-day total of 151 points under the Molave scoring format to beat Tanpinco by four points for the overall crown. She retained the title last year in Iloilo, capping her romp with a final round output of 50 points to complete a wire-to-wire victory.

The Korean ace, who became only the second player since 2000 to rule the event back-to-back after Heidi Chua in 2000-01, is paired with former RP Ladies Open winner Carmelette Villaroman, Gretchen Villavicencio and Mariel Candinato

I thought that they are still going to use the old Bacoloc City Hall for some other offices in the government? Other than that, what are they planning to do with the old city hall after they've transferred to the new government center in the east?

Nograles as new speaker
good for Negros : officials
BY CARLA GOMEZ
;

Negrense officials yesterday said they are hopeful the take over by Rep. Prospero Nograles ( Davao City , 1 st District, Lakas CMD) as Speaker of the House will be beneficial to Negros Occidental because he has roots in the province and is a friend.

They are also hoping that Nograles will be able to deliver on the promise for change in the House that is suffering from a credibility problem.

Nograles, who took over from Rep. Jose de Venecia (Pangasinan, 4 th District, Lakas CMD), yesterday said his term would be marked by consensus-building and consultations.

“Our decisions will be based on the general sentiment of my peers,” Nograles said.

“The number one complaint of congressmen is the lack of transparency in the use of House funds and I will make sure that this will change,” he said.

Rep. Jose Carlos Lacson (Neg. Occ., 3 rd District, Lakas CMD) said with Nograles at the helm he is hoping for “changes that will enhance the image and integrity of the House as far as perceptions are concerned.”

It is not true that the congressmen received money in exchange for their votes to oust de Venecia, he stressed. However, there is no point in talking about it, if some people have made up their minds to believe that, Lacson said.

Nograles is a good leader with transparency and political will, Rep. Jeffrey Ferrer (Neg. Occ., 4 th District, NPC) said.

Nograles, who has roots in Pontevedra and La Carlota City has been a friend of his since he was a councilor, Ferrer said.

Rep. Monico Puentevella ( Bacolod , Lakas CMD) said “174 votes means its time for JdV to go. We'll have a more harmonious relationship now with the Senate and Malacañang.”

“With Nograles being partly from Negros , we'll try to get more infrastructure and economic benefits for the province and the city,” he added.

“Since we placed Nograles there, we'll give him all our support,” Puentevella said.

Rep. Alfredo Marañon III (Neg. Occ., 2 nd District, KAMPI) also said he has high hopes Nograles will institute the necessary reforms to improve the image of the House.

Rep. Genaro Alvarez (Neg. Occ., 6 th District, NPC) said he supported a Nograles' takeover for the sake of his district because he is with the administration.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia (NPC) said Nograles as speaker of the House is good for Bacolod City and Negros Occidental as he has roots in the province.

Nograles, who has visited Bacolod many times, has proven that he is a very good and effective leader, and will be a breath of fresh air in the House, Leonardia said.

As for de Venecia's accusations against the President and her family in his speech Monday night before the House, Leonardia said Nograles has said those things will be taken up at a proper forum. Let us not prejudge the issues and let the process take its natural course, he said.

Acting Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco (Lakas-CMD) said the congressmen are clamoring for change in the House and he hopes Nograles listens to their call.

He said accusations hurled by de Venecia against the administration in his speech Monday night were not new.

“In fact some congressmen asked why he only made the exposé when he was to be replaced. His credibility to some congressmen is questionable,” Zayco said.

Zayco said he did not know if the ouster of de Venecia would also mean a shakeup in the Lakas leadership. The Lakas was supposed to have had an assembly on Feb. 7 in Manila but with this development he did do not know if it will still be held, he said.

Acting Negros Occidental Vice Governor Emilio Yulo III (KAMPI) said the ouster of de Venecia “is the dynamics of politics, you always serve at the pleasure of your peers, assuming that the replacement was done purely for the reasons stated.”

“The independence of the House has always been in question so we hope that under Nograles he will rise to the challenge, particularly those being thrown at him by the first termers who want a reformist House,” he said.

As to the accusations hurled by de Venecia in his valedictory, Yulo said they will have to wait and see whether the former speaker continues to elucidate on those matters. “But of course it would have serious political implications considering the political instability that we are still in,” he said.

“Me, I have no love for JdV,” Yulo added.*CPG
