Bacoloadiat Festival fever is now ON! ! !
:banana::banana::banana:
Same to you @Smile and @Jay. To all, Happy CNY.
ANP to hold
‘Chowfest' on Feb. 8, 9
The Negros Showroom will hold a Chowfest at the Showroom on February 8 and 9, at the Showroom parking area, from 1:30 p.m. onwards to celebrate the BacoLaodiat Festival, a press release from the Association of Negros Producers said.
The Chowfest at the Showroom will offer a fusion of tasty feasts like Casa Carmela's sio-pops and chicken patties, Quan's puto and dinugo-an, Virgies' siomai and morisquita, T-Flavors' chopsy and fried lumpia, and other culinary delicacies from Jarvis, Clara's, El Ideal, Sugarlandia and Alter Trade.
Mabinuligon's placemats, trays and coasters from coco-midribs and ceramics and potteries of Precious and other locally-crafted products will also be on sale.
To accommodate BacoLaodiat revelers, the Negros Showroom will extend its store hours on Feb. 8 and 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 pm., the press release added.*
This is one venue where Negrenses can showcase their culinary expertise on Fil-Chinese cuisines as well as other products. A must see.:)
I thought that they are still going to use the old Bacoloc City Hall for some other offices in the government? Other than that, what are they planning to do with the old city hall after they've transferred to the new government center in the east?
Maybe it'll be a gradual transfer once the new Govt Center is completed. If Bing's admin will opt to let other offices and services remain, then i guess its a waste of idea and govt resources building this multi-million govt ctr project. It defeats the main purpose so to speak.:)
@Ninja's idea is also ok(a police precinct/office). But i guess they already have one near the reclamation area(BAC-UP precinct).:)

The color schemes are just perfect to the lush greeneries backdrop. Maybe in the pool area, Miami-type palms , eucalyptus trees or the indian fire trees can enhance totally its cool ambience. This resortel is a great escape and relaxation center. I will definitely check this one out as I touchbase in Bacolod. Soon.:)

20,000 join pilgrimage walk
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra challenged the youth who participated in the Jubilee Pilgrimage Walk yesterday to avoid the attraction of an easy life that offers all comforts and instead, be motivated by higher and nobler ideals that call for discipline and control.
Addressing the 20,000 people at the Paglaum Stadium in Bacolod City who joined the activity, among them students from different schools and parishes, Navarra said the youth should not allow themselves to give in to laziness, greed, envy, selfishness, and destructive competitions.
He also told the crowd that the activity was not meant to show force or to make people see how numerous the faithful in the diocese are but instead, everyone should reflect on the reason and meaning behind the celebration of the Jubilee year.
The activity is more of an awareness of the Jubilee celebration among those who participated and the bystanders who watched the pilgrimage passing by the streets towards the stadium, Navarra said.
The bishop also reminded the participants of the start of the Season of Lent which calls for penance, sobriety and temperance, charity and generosity.
The sacrifices made during the pilgrimage walk should be offered in honor of the sacred passion and death of Christ, the bishop said.
Also launched during the program at the Paglaum was Caritas-Bacolod, the diocesan relief center for victims of disaster and an agency that will facilitate housing for the homeless, welfare services for the sick, feeding center for the hungry, and intervention center for drugs and alcohol dependents, and mentally deranged, and services for prisoners, disabled and aged.
Participants in the pilgrimage walk contributed P10 for donation to the Caritas.
Among those who joined the activity was Mayor Evelio Leonardia who congratulated the bishop and the priests for organizing an event that drew participation from a large crowd.
Leonardia said the event heightened the level of awareness among the youth and gave the older generation a better glimpse of the history of the church in Negros .
During the program at the Paglaum Stadium, Navarra explained that the Diocese of Bacolod is composed of 67 parishes and chaplaincies from Victorias in the north and Hinigaran in the south.
The program at the Paglaum Stadium was hosted by celebrities Joel Torre and Jaime Fabregas with former Miss Universe Gloria Diaz also present.*NAB

Bacolod SP commends SM
THE Bacolod City Council passed a resolution commending the Waste Market Fair and Green Bag projects of SM City Bacolod.
The said resolution was resolved upon motion of Acting Floor Leader Alex Paglumotan, jointly seconded by Councilors Wilson Gamboa and Al Victor Espino, amended by Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue.
Post here your Valentine's Day greetings
The Concerned and Responsible Eco-Shopper or Care Program of SM City Bacolod promotes social responsibility and environmental consciousness among the consumers and resident of Bacolod City by introducing a new shopping habit and responsible use of shopping bags.
It cited that the programs is a positive undertaking coming from the private sector and service oriented establishment in helping the city in its Clean and Green Program through promoting segregation at source as a first step of a more responsive Solid Waste Management Program.
The Waste Market Fair becomes a new dimension to malling in SM City Bacolod. After its successful launch in June 2007, this new trading activity in the mall has been simultaneously held in SM Supermalls nationwide.
SM Supermalls started the Waste Market Fair in support to Republic Act 9003 or the Solid Waste Management Act. At the Waste Market Fair, one can transact business with recycling companies and exchange recyclable items for cash. The latter include items that have no value or those that are considered hazardous like polystyrene, Styrofoam, cellphones and batteries.
After the hugely successful series of Waste Market Fairs, SM takes one more step down the green road as SM Supermarket introduces its environmental program, SM Cares.
The centerpiece of the program is the GreenBag, in partnership with Uniliver Philippines, the leading manufacturer of food, home, and personal care products.
The GreenBag is the first of its kind reusable shopping bag made from durable non-woven fabric that can last approximately two years' trip of weekly grocery. This is in response to the country's solid waste issue, which the joint project hopes to address positively to change the Filipinos' consumption practices.
This involves starting a new shopping habit by using and reusing the GreenBag instead of the usual plastic bags when shopping at the SM Supermarket thereby reducing pollution and minimizing landfill use.

Bacolaodiat takes a ride aboard the Kinenkoy Comedy Express
"THE audience's laughter is our song to our god," said Gabby Fernandez, director of the Kinenkoy Comedy Express.
They are slated to take the Chinese New Year with waves of laughter as part of the February 8 Bacolaodiat celebration in a performance area along Bacolod City's 6th Street.
The Kinenkoy Comedy Express is a group of stand up comic players who do sketches, political satire, conceptual dances, and a lot of "live" work that include among many, Stunt Double, the Blank Family, Story-building, a comic opera, all based on audience suggestions.
It is basically an exploration of the medium and a challenge on each one's skills. The act is a first of its kind in the country.
The group was born from Peque Gallaga's Negros Summer Workshops in 2000. It was a product of the Theatre Improvisations module which is basically the same one that gave rise to improvisation groups such as Second City, the training ground for virtually all of the stand up comic geniuses of our time such as Robin Williams, Chevy Chase and John Belushi, among others.
It started out as Tuesdays with Kinenkoy at the Iron Dinosaur Bar. Since then, they have performed in a lot of venues including a three-month stint at the Comfort Room Comedy Bar in Makati, the first venue that solely dedicated to comedy improvisations. For the group, it was and will always be about having fun, playing, breaking new ground and exposing the community to a fairly-new form of theatre.
Fernandez said, "we never really meant Kinenkoy to last this long! We really we're just out to have some fun and earn beer money along the way. What has happened since has really amazed all of us. It has been a wonderful years of playing together, entertaining hundreds of people and drinking a whole lot from the money we earned."
The live performances have had an unbelievably varied audience, from kids to grandparents, from school youths, urban poor, yuppies, artists, etc. It is no small thing for the artists to know that they have made people laugh their hearts out and forget their problems even for just an hour. A final word from Gabby is that "...after doing a show we know with certainty tht we've helped make the world a happier place."
Comedy improvisations is a audience-based show (sketches based on the audience's suggestions for topics) and Kinenkoy hopes to get a lot of Chinese new year-themed suggestions in the Bacolaodiat show. The group will include Eero Martinez, John Arceo, Rhea Sol Hiballes, Jack Trino, and Sonny Cabahug.

First Airsoft Friend-ship Game Held at SM
Airsoft enthusiasts from all over Negros Island converged at SM City Bacolod Bacolod for the First Airsoft Friendship Tourney held at the mall’ Southwing Carpark recently.
Dubbed as Operation: Broken Arrow 1st SM Airsoft Speedball Competition, the event was the first-ever of its kind successfully organized in Bacolod City with the support of the Bacolod City Police and Airsoft organizations. It was participated by Teams San Carlos, Teletech, 99 and ASG.
Airsoft is a modern combat sport or recreational hobby in which participants eliminate opponents by hitting each other with (6 or sometimes 8 mm) plastic ball bearings (BB’s - although BB stands for ‘bullet ball’ in reference to Airsoft), launched from airsoft guns, that can be powered by CO2, Green Gas, spring, or electrically powered gearboxes. Participants typically use varying types of weapons designed as replicas of real firearms, tactical gear, and accessories used by military and police organizations.
The event also served as a venue for BCPO to prompt Airsoft players to register their firearms.*

Over at SM Bacolod, the event center will present “Welcome Spring,” a Chinese exhibit by Prof. Tsai Shiu Yuin and his students.
There will also be an animal market exhibit and the Grand Parade at the North and South Terminals. This will be followed by the a lion dance around the mall tomorrow.
After a series of other activities, the culmination of the celebration will be the lantern and street dancing around the mall on Sunday.
Starting Tuesday, 6th Street has blossomed with red-colored tents which will serve as vendors’ kiosks. Chinese dishes, especially tikoy, will be available to regale the gustatory taste of Chinese New Year celebrations.

Tension, disaster, turbulence - welcome to the Year of the Rat
The Year of the Rat threatens to see a build-up of international tensions, natural and air disasters, and a more turbulent stock market, soothsayers and analysts say.
As the Year of the Pig ends tonight, followers of Chinese superstition will be scurrying to consult fortune-tellers, astrologers and feng shui geomancers to guide their year ahead.
Chinese fortunes are based on a belief that events are dictated by the different balances in the elements that make up the earth -- gold, wood, water, fire and earth.
Feng shui master Raymond Lo says this year will see the earth element sitting atop water, suggesting an outward solidity built on sliding foundations.
"The earth on top is Yang earth which symbolises a mountain, and mountain gives a sense of stability and firmness. But such floating earth in the ocean is weak in foundation and the stability appears to be fragile," Lo said.
"This elemental relationship will bring a year which apparently is more stable but there are a lot of underlying tensions and confrontations."
Lo added that the Chinese calendar follows a 60-year cycle, so 2008 will be similar historically to 1948, when Israel was established and the blockade of Berlin started, both events part of the build-up to long-standing conflict.
The lunar calendar is based on the cycles of the moon and associates each of the 12 years forming a partial cycle with an animal. Fortune-tellers base their predictions on the relationship between the zodiac animals and the characteristics of each.
The Rat is the first of the 12 animal signs, so marks new beginnings, which Lo said will be reflected in changes of leadership in the United States, Russia and Taiwan.
It is followed by ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, dog and pig.
The rodent is also seen as a "flower of romance" which means the year will stimulate romance, but also sex scandals.
More worryingly, it provokes a clash between water and fire which could mean heavy flooding or a tsunami, Lo added.
"The most famous water disasters in history, such as the south Asian tsunami in 2004 and the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, both incidents happened on a date with prominent appearance of the Rat," Lo said.
He also said that the previous Year of the Rat, 1996, witnessed more than 20 plane crashes including the Trans World Airlines Boeing aircraft which exploded over the Atlantic, killing 230 people.
Lee Sing-tong, a third-generation feng shui master, said China may suffer a water shortage in the next 12 months.
But after the property bubbles in the US and China's tightening monetary measures, Lee believes the US and China property markets will enter another chapter and will see stable development for the property market and economy.
Although the subprime crisis has caused concerns in the global economy, unexpectedly the property market will stabilise in 2008.
He predicts a better economy for China after the 2008 Olympics.
"2009 will be its most prosperous year in history," he added.
Lee said there would be a big change in Hillary Clinton's health and career but that doesn't necessarily mean she will hold political power.
In contrast, Clinton's Democratic rival, Barack Obama, "has an in-born talent for leadership and is expected to be in an extraordinary political position in the next 10 years."
"There's a big chance that he will win November's presidential election in the United States," Lee predicted.
Kenny Lau, head of the small-cap sector at Credit Suisse, said the last three Rat years had all seen very strong stock market growth in Hong Kong. It grew 232 percent in 1972, 30 percent in 1984 and 18 percent in 1996.
But he said high inflation -- he predicted 5.1 percent in Hong Kong and 6.5 percent in the Chinese mainland -- would provide a threat to economic growth and turbulent times were ahead.
He said investors should target their lai see -- the cash Chinese people give to relatives and colleagues during the festival -- at small stocks that have not yet gained the full benefit of the booming Hong Kong and mainland markets.
His colleague Vincent Chan, head of China research, said the markets will not repeat the record returns of the past few years.
"It is likely that the volatility of the market in 2008 will be comparable to that of 2007, but the chance of significant absolute returns is rather remote," he said.

Conversion hoped through St. Therese
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Organizers of the Visit of the Pilgrim Relic of St. Therese of the Child Jesus in Bacolod City set next month hope the event will pave the way for moral conversion and provide a sense of direction and hope for everyone.
The visit is timely as the country undergoes so many “thorns” with most of the people lacking in spirituality and perspective of what is true and what is not, the organizing group said in a press conference yesterday.
Coinciding with the Jubilee celebration of the Diocese of Bacolod, the organizing group encouraged offerings of prayers for St. Therese to provide Filipino people with a sense of direction, hope and meaning in their lives.
The pilgrim relic will arrive in Bacolod City from Iloilo City on March 4 and will be brought to San Sebastian Cathedral for the welcome rites, then to the Carmelite Monastery in Mandalagan where masses, visitations and venerations will be held.
The relic, contained in a reliquary made of jacaranda wood and gilt silver, will go to Kabankalan City in the morning of March 6 and will be brought back to the Carmelite Monastery by 5 p.m.
The organizing group said St. Therese was known for doing small and ordinary things in extraordinary ways with great love and was a “comfort to life's thorns”.
Of the 33 Doctors of the Church, Therese of Lisieux, Catherine of Siena, and Teresa of Avila are the only females.
Records on the life of St. Therese showed that she was the youngest nun to enter the Carmelite convent in Lisieux , France at the age of 15, and she has a special concern for prisoners and the causes of prisoners.
She is known for her autobiography, Story of a Soul, were she wrote that "what matters in life is not great deeds, but great love."*NAB

The ninth Convergys Corp. contact center in the country is opening in Bacolod City in April and creating about 1,000 new jobs this year, Marife Zamora, its vice president and country general manager, said yesterday.
Convergys currently employs 12,000 people in its six contact centers in Metro Manila and two in Cebu , she said.
In Bacolod City, the firm has began training 100 applicants and aims to have 500 employees when it opens its new integrated contact center at San Antonio Park Square in Barangay Mandalagan in April, Zamora said.
Convergy's also aims to create another 500 new jobs in Bacolod City before the end of the year and more in the succeeding years, depending on the quality of talent they find in the city, she added.
“ Bacolod City has been providing well-educated English-proficient talent and we see a lot of potential,” Zamora said. Convergys is quite confident it will find more talent as it opens up more jobs in Bacolod , she added.
Convergys decided to put up a contact center in Bacolod because when it began recruiting employees in the city three to four years ago it found a lot of available quality talent, Zamora said.
‘BUSINESS-FRIENDLY'
And Bacolod City also has a pro-business environment, said Clint Streit, Convergys president for customer management, who met with Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday.
It is flattering that outside of Manila and Cebu , Convergys has chosen to come to Bacolod , Leonardia said. “Our presence here and the kind of support we are getting is really a testament to the fact that Bacolod City is, indeed, the most business-friendly city,” Zamora said.
Convergys is a global firm that provides customer care, human resources and billing services and is the largest outsource contact services provider in the world, Streit said.
“We have set a target that over the next five years we will double that presence in the Philippines ,” Streit said.
Construction is currently underway for its new-state-of-the-art contact center in Bacolod encompassing 3,000 square meters with room for expansion, he said.
EMPLOYEE GROWTH
The facility will include a contact center, administration, recruitment and training rooms, advance language laboratory, and a cafeteria. It will also be outfitted to international standards with ergonomically designed furniture for contact center work, state-of-the art generators and back-up contingency systems.
Streit also stressed that Convergys is a firm that ensures growth for its employees through training and the opportunity to move upward into the management level.
We provide career paths for our agents, Zamora said.
Convergys has a management program that looks at developing talent and equipping them for the next role that they will have in the company, she said.
OUTREACH PROGRAMS
Aside from providing jobs, Convergys also has outreach programs in the areas where it puts up contact centers, Zamora said.
In Bacolod City , Convergys is working together with Gawad Kalinga in setting up a youth center in Barangay Banago, Jose Mari Mercado, Convergys business development director, said.
The youth center will work at developing values and English proficiency skills, he said.
Convergys has a reading program for elementary school children in Pasig and an English literacy program in Mindanao , which it can also replicate in Bacolod , Zamora said.
Convergys presence in Bacolod will be beyond providing jobs, because one of the values of the firm is corporate citizenship, Zamora said, noting that it has been Fortune's most admired firm for seven consecutive years now.
Convergys recruitment center is at Circle Inn at Lopez Jaena Street near the Shopping Center.*CPG/CGS

BacoLaodiat starts today
BY CARLA GOMEZ & CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Bacolod 's artists have created 12 brightly colored giant animals that will glow from within when they join Bacolod City 's annual BacoLaodiat Festival lantern parade from SM City to 6 th Street at 6 p.m. today to usher in the Chinese New Year.
They are the brainchild of Bacolod-based multi-awarded artist Charlie Co who tapped the help of other Negrense artists for the collaborative work.
This is the first time Co has brought his art into the annual BacoLaodiat Festival. He said the 8-feet tall by 4-feet wide animals mounted on 4-feet high boxes represent the 12 animals of the Chinese horoscope.
Co, through the giant animals, brings to “life” the twelve animals that symbolize the twelve years in the Chinese Lunar cycle, and horoscope.
According to myth Buddha before leaving the world invited all the animals of the world to a feast and only 12 animals arrived, in the following order – the rat, ox, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, the rooster, the dog and the pig. Buddha decided to name a year after each of them, in the order of their arrival.
The animals shaped with bamboo frames are covered in vivid colors and enhanced with lights from within, like giant lanterns sitting on red pedestals.
They will form part of a spectacular evening parade of lanterns, illuminated floats, dragons and lions tonight.
The animals will then find their home at the Capitol Lagoon Park in Bacolod City for the duration of the festival, which last until Feb 10, for the public to enjoy.
This year Bacolod City is celebrating the third BacoLaodiat Festival with the Capitol Shopping Center as the main activity center.
The Shopping Center is considered the base of Chinese heritage in the city.
The BacoLaodiat will kick off at 8 a.m. with a citywide dragon and lion dance, to be followed by the opening of the Chopsticks Alley along 6 th Street at 5 p.m.
The opening ceremony and cultural presentation will be held at the main stage at 6 th Street at 7 p.m. after the lantern parade where Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and 2008 BacoLaodiat chairman William Ong will declare the official opening of the Chinese New Year Festival.
This will be followed by “Symphony of Sparks and Lights” citywide fireworks display and a live band concert at 6 th Street (BacoLaodiat schedule on page 11).
A Chinese Lantern Street Dancing competition, on the theme “Strength and Unity”, will also be held for the first time on Feb. 9 and is open to various private and public schools, barangays, cities and municipalities.
The four-day activity will be capped by a farewell ceremony at 6 th Street to bid the Year of the Pig goodbye and welcome the Year of the Rat on Feb. 10.
The 2008 BacoLaodiat Festival is chaired by William Ong of 888 Mall, with Crispin Chua as vice chairman, Lily Go – treasurer, Mary Tien – secretary and Charlie Co, Hugo Corral, Teresa Gochangco, Leonito Lopue, and Secretary to the Mayor Goldwyn Nifras as directors.
The artists who created the animal lanterns with Co are Jojo Regollo, Ting Cristales, Rex Cuenca, Niel Bienavente, Lawrence Mangao, Jerry Maguliman, Junjun Montelibano, Cindy Ballesteros, EJ Balesteros, John Michael Lee, Jeffrey Lazaro Eddie Encarnacion and Manny Montelibano*CPG/CGS

Independent Bacolod Councilor Pushing for Key Development Projects in City
By Edgar Cadagat
An economic program, a livelihood program, steady power supply, genuine arts and culture council, a sustained Information Technology industry, adequate service for abused women and children in Bacolod City and more computer units in public secondary schools are among the program and projects, independent councilor lawyer Jocelle Batapa-Sigue said she wants to implement and eventually realize.
Batapa-Sigue, who won the election as councilor as an independent without affiliating with any political party, said she would rather have the old Bacolod airport converted into a Presidentially-Proclaimed Mixed-Use Economic Zone under the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) so that foreign and local manufacturers will have a Bacolod-base for their operations. Batapa cited concrete examples such as the conversion of the old Lahug Airport in Cebu to the Asiatown Cyber Park, the best IT Park in the country.
“After all, we have already five presidentially-proclaimed ICT Ecozones under PEZA in Bacolod, the first five in Western Visayas and serving as home to almost 4,000 jobs by first quarter near,” said the Bacolod councilor.
Batapa-Sigue said she also hopes that the vendors, fisherfolks, drivers and others all called the informal sector find more stable livelihood if the DOLE can successfully implement the WORKTREP Program.
As she is the one who spearheaded the development of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the City Council, Batapa-Sigue said she hopes the gains which have been achieved could be sustained, especially in the aspect of human resource development with the multi-stakeholder approach of all sectors coming from the academe, training, business, environment, infrastructure, real estate and local government.
Among major projects she would also like to see to fruition are more available psycho-social, medical and legal services for abused women and children, the convening and establishment of the Arts and Culture Council including those involved in visual, architectural, dance, musical and theatrical art. That the convening and eventual establishment of the Arts Council could be done soon.
More computers for the city’s secondary schools were needed and while it is conceded that in the coming years, there could be a lack of power here, she would wish it would be sustainable and environmentally-friendly power source.*

Exhibits Open at SM
The 5-day Bacolaodiat Festival kicked off yesterday with a big bang. Bacolod First Lady Elsa Leonardia, wife of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, cut the ceremonial ribbon to start the painting exhibits at the Event Centre of SM-City Bacolod.
Bacolaodiat is another festival in Bacolod representing the Chinese New Year, organized by the Tsinoy community.
The painting exhibits are products of students of Arsenia Lim, Chinese painting professor in Manila who has brought in 22 framed paintings of her 17 students purposely for the exhibits. They are members of Philippine Zi-Der Chinese Art Center. Zi-Der means self actualization and self satisfaction. The paintings express varied mood, scene and emotional expressions that depict the Chinese culture and traditions.
Mrs. Leonardia said this is a unique painting exhibit because every character or subject has lots of meanings to convey. Present during the opening were Fred Barcelona, founder of Tsinoy-Negros and Bacolaodiat festival, SM Marketing Manager Tina Magbojos, SM PR Lorena Martinez, Bacolod media representatives, students, and other leaders of Tsinoy-Negros.* (Edith B. Convergys to open Bacolod facility April (http://www.bworld.com.ph/BW020808/content.php?id=044)
BACOLOD CITY — Customer care management provider Convergys Corp. targets to open in April a contact center here, its ninth in the country.
Marife Zamora, vice-president and country general manager, said the company has hired about 100 employees and aims to create 500 new jobs in Bacolod before the end of the year.
"Bacolod City has been providing well-educated English proficient talents and we see a lot of potential," she said during a courtesy call to Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia.
Clint Streit, Convergys president for customer management, also said Bacolod has a pro-business environment because of the support of the local government and the business sector.
‘Flattered’
Mr. Leonardia said the local government was flattered that Convergys has chosen to expand to Bacolod outside of Manila and Cebu.
Convergys currently employs 12,000 people in its six contact centers in Manila and two in Cebu.
"We have set a target that over the next five years, we will double that presence in the Philippines," Mr. Streit said.
Friendly city
Construction is underway for a 3,000-square-meter facility here.
It will include a contact center, administration office, recruitment and training rooms, advanced language laboratory and a cafeteria.
"Our presence here and the kind of support we are getting is really a testament to the fact that Bacolod City is, indeed, the most business-friendly city," Ms. Zamora said. :applause: — Chrysee G. Samillano

BacoLaodiat lights up skies
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Fireworks lit up skies with radiant sparks and brightly colored animal lanterns paraded down Bacolod City 's streets last night to usher in the year of the rat and kick off the annual BacoLaodiat Festival.
The Negros Tsinoy, together with officials of Negros Occidental and Bacolod City , also lighted incense as a symbol of unity during the program at 6 th Street in Bacolod City that opened the 2008 BacoLaodiat.
Present were Negros Occidental Vice Gov. Isidro Zayco, Board Members Melvin Ibañez and Gary Acuña, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella, Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, Catalino Alisbo, Homer Bais, and Roberto Rojas, Bacolod Tourism Council chairman John Orola, U.S. Embassy vice consul Sarah Peck, and members of the Negros Tsinoy led by William Ong, among others.
The program followed the grand evening parade from the Bacolod City Hall to 6 th Street that included giant lanterns featuring the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac calendar. It was participated in by the city officials and employees, the public and private schools, Filipino-Chinese organizations, and some establishments.
Ong, chairman of the BacoLaodiat Inc. and Negros Tsinoy, said the objective of BacoLaodiat is to generate trade to pump-prime the local economy, to promote tourism by attracting local and foreign tourists to the city and the province, and to promote Bacolod City as the friendliest city in the Philippines .
He said this year's theme is “Strength in Unity.” The affinity between the Filipino and Chinese cultures will bridge the gap and will propel us towards a progressive nation, he said.
He thanked Leonardia and Bais for institutionalizing BacoLaodiat through an ordinance passed in 2007.
Leonardia said there is a projection that in ten years time there will be more than a hundred million Chinese who will be traveling out of their country. “So we are preparing ourselves for the time when this happens. We know that the tourism industry is expected to become the number one industry in the world, so we are going to be ready when the time comes,” he said.
If there are other cities or municipalities that are celebrating the Chinese New Year, he said he believes the celebration of the Chinese Festival in Bacolod is one of the best, if not the best in the country today.
Leonardia recalled that the BacoLaodiat came about after he, and some city officials and members of the Chinese community observed the Chinese New Year festival in Iloilo . “Since then there was no stopping this BacoLaodiat and it is to the credit of our Filipino-Chinese community leaders and members of the community that the festival was born,” he said.
The first BacoLaodiat festival in 2006, which was chaired then by Fred Barcelona, was a very big success and so with the second one chaired by Luis Chan, Leonardia said. The second year was inspired by the first year, he said, and from the looks of it, it is getting bigger and bigger.
Leonardia attributed this to the cooperation and enthusiasm of the people. He said the festival is another permanent fixture in the calendar of the City of Bacolod .
“Now we have gotten national attention and we believe this is now one of the major tourist attractions of the city,” he added.*CGS

Independent Bacolod Councilor Pushing for Key Development Projects in CityBy Edgar Cadagat

Microsoft asks partners
to obtain certification
Microsoft is encouraging its partners in Bacolod City to get professional certification for licensing delivery to boost their credentials in providing Microsoft-based solutions. “If you're a certified partner, businesses… schools will trust you,” George Parrilla, marketing manager of Microsoft Southern Philippines, said yesterday.
Parilla and sales manager Erick Olavides were in Bacolod to meet with their local partners.
In Bacolod , Microsoft Philippines has about 50 partners, those who resell and promote their products. These include retailers, system builders and value-added resellers.
Among these partners, only Datalink Technologies Inc. so far has Microsoft certified professionals, Parrilla said. But most of their resellers in Bacolod are registered partners.
Partners need to send their people to Cebu or Manila to take certification exams because there is no training provider in Bacolod yet. “But we're still encouraging them to take the exams,” said Parilla who described Microsoft as a “100 percent through partner business.”
PROGRAM
For its partners, Microsoft Philippines has designed the Kaakbay Partner Program, a localized program aimed to help them grow their business and realize their full potential.
By registering, partners can receive training, enjoy rewards and incentives, get pre-sales and operational support, and even obtain Microsoft software for internal use.
Qualified business to join the Kaakbay Program are: system builders or PC assemblers, value-added resellers or volume license resellers, large account resellers, independent software vendors, system integrators, Microsoft training providers, Microsoft Dynamics solutions resellers, and services and support providers.
Depending on their skills, expertise and program engagement, partners are designated a particular level, either as a registered partner, certified partner or gold certified partner.*NLG

hopefully the big vacant lot fronting the tip of narra avenue across the lopez jaena street will develop into a chinatown park,,,for a yearly event of bacolod chinese new year...and also there is a tank painted a pepsi at the middle of the crossing roads to remove and replace it that or add something for a fun monuments or fountain area

On Bacolaodiat: More Blessings, Good Health CHEERS TO UNITY!
By Carla N. Canet
The 3rd Bacolaodiat festival, a celebration for the Chinese New Year has kicked off with a bang and two races - Filipino and Chinese have come together to celebrate the Chinese New Year yesterday.
Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Bacolod City Lone District Cong. Monico O. Puente-vella and Councilors Homer Bais, Bobby Rojas, Jocelle Sigue, U.S. Vice Consul Sarah Peck, First Lady Elsa Leonardia, Filipino Chinese community filled up the 6th Lacson Street and near the Capitol Shopping Center for the 3rd Bacolaodiat festival.
Mr. William Ong, 3rd Baco-laodiat Festival Chairman said, “We are gathered here tonight to usher the Year of the Earth Rat. This event showcases the happy fusion of the Filipino and Chinese cultures interwoven within the context of strength in unity.”
Bacolaodiat, he said is derived from the word Bacolod and Laodiat. Laodiat means celebration in Fookienese, the Chinese dialect of most Tsinoys which aims to achieve the following objectives.
First, is to generate trade, pump priming the local economy. Proofs for this would be the expanded Chopsticks Alley and the soon to open 888 China Town Square - the first of its kind in the City of Bacolod and the Negros Island.
Second, is to promote tourism by attracting local and foreign tourist to visit the City of Smiles and the Island of Negros.
This will create employment opportunities and investments especially in the area of land development. This will also promote Bacolod City as the friendliest City in the Philippines.
Lastly, he said is the assimilation of the Filipino and Chinese culture, promoting the best of both worlds. The affinity between these two distinct cultures will bridge the gap that will propel us forward towards a progressive nation.
He said, “Our theme this year is strength in unity is a step forward to our last year’s theme which is unity in diversity.”
This year’s celebration will be jump packed as lots of activities are programmed to entertain our visitors like Lantern parade, symphony of lights, fireworks display, lantern street dance competition, painting exhibit, cultural programs, among others.
He added that, “Let not our diversity cause divisiveness rather an opportunity to propel us towards uplifting the plight of our people. As the Chinese proverbs goes, “Only when all contribute their firewood can we build a strong fire. Kung Hei Fat Choi.”
Meanwhile, Mayor Leonardia, the father of Bacolaodiat Festival said the first Bacolaodiat was a very big success. The second was a smashing sucess and the third one was getting bigger and bigger.
“We can say that Bacolaodiat is now a permanent fixture in the calendar of City of Bacolod. No less than the City Council has institutionalized it. As Tourism is projected to become the No. 1 industry in the world, Bacolod will also be benefited. As reports showed, 2 million Chinese during the Lunar Calendar travelled outside their country and it is projected by the next 10 years, 100 million Chinese will be travelling. If we can get even 1% of it, the better for Bacolod,” Leonardia said.
He added that Bacolod’s Chinese New Year celebration is one of the best if not the best in the whole country, he said.

PNOC needs forest, watershed
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
A FOREST system will 'moisten' the magma deposits in the volcanic area to produce more steam evaporation.
Key officials of the Philippine National Oil Corporation (PNOC) are saying, "Drilling new geothermal oil wells and the production of steam needed the very forest itself to optimize steam evaporation."
Both Medrano and PNOC community relations officer Joey Higgins stressed that PNOC had invested large amount of money to study the Mt. Kanlaon forest system just so no living thing will ever be destroyed in the process of drilling down into the geothermal resources of the earth.
"Simply put, PNOC geothermal operation needed a forest system if it has to operate and produce steam at its optimal," Medrano and Higgins said.
"There is no way we can extract steam if we destroy the forest surrounding PNOC geothermal operation. We need forest and the water shed to operate," Medrano said.
"PNOC, therefore, after shelling large investments in forestry, must maintain, protect and return what it had cut," Medrano explained as a forester himself.
"PNOC must do within its means to reforest, to replace whatever is being cut," he added.
Higgins, on the other hand, proved that because of PNOC's presence in Mailum, kaingeros were controlled. Rivers also produce more water because of the forest and the watershed areas are protected.
"This was not the case before. This is documented," he further stressed.
Medrano explained that there appears to be a misinterpretation of what biodiversity is.
"Biodiversity does not mean that we don't cut trees. We cut trees, which needed cutting, replace them, put order to forest so that it responds to the very needs of man," he explained.
In the case of PNOC, the goal is bio-diversification to make the forest responsive even to the livelihood of dwellers there.

BPI will remain. Lion's Park, we dont know...maybe they sell their lot to SM...actually thats really their plan, thats why they fenced that area. I dont know if they were able to close the deal with sea breeze, it has been reported that they plan to acquire sea breeze hotel and make it as their entrance...we'll see. next year pa man na e

Gasataya seeks 'Green Lane' in stores
BACOLOD Councilor Greg Gasataya, Chair Committee on Environment, proposed a resolution urging malls, supermarkets, grocery stores and other establishments to provide a green lane counter to exclusively accommodate and prioritize consumers who use biodegradable/environment friendly containers.
Said resolution states that Section 48 of Republic Act 9003 provides that the manufacture, distribution or use of non-environmentally acceptable packaging material; and the importation of consumer products packaged in non-environmentally acceptable materials are strictly prohibited.
The effort to provide and give priority to those consumers who uses biodegradable and environment friendly containers is complementary to the solid waste management program of the City and the use of biodegradable and environment friendly materials as bagging and packing are promoted.
Gasataya said the mechanism for reward system for those who promote and patronize environmentally sound programs and projects are being encourage to efficiently reduce the residual waste the use of plastic.
He said that using of plastic containers should be regulated including bagging and packaging used in shopping and as alternative; promote biodegradable containers such as bayong, green bags, carton boxes, non-plastic sack or bags, and sturdy reusable shopping bags;
The City of Bacolod supports the institutionalization of biodegradable materials for containers as promotion for the protection and conservation of the environment, Gasataya added.
Gasataya also heads the Clean and Green Coordinating Task Force created by Mayor Evelio Leonardia.

my shocking day,,,this is what i expected,,,either hotel or for BPO uses...that is a very long vertical and a big lot...there is a reason coz they already fences that area for a sure sm group development in a near future...the vacant lots from the east to the west and from the north to the south of sm mall are the future development of sm group; baywalk fiesta strip, BPO, hotel, townhouses, and convention center...from the south of reclamation area is for sm group development, at the middle is for the bredco group mixed-used development , and to the north is for provincial capitol convention center...cheerz

For me,I would like to have them both built seperately, the hotel first and the exhibition and convention center later or the other way.SM is an international brand and have good local and international business partners. They can bring in more investments to the city especially for Bacolod's Tourism Industry.I would prefer them to occupy the remaining vacant lots in reclamation area.
