That happened pala sa intersection sang Rizal and Lacson Sts.
Anyway, good news to ang new hotel by SM. Let's just hope may news gid nga ma-gwa in the later months to prove that SM is really pushing for the Bacolod market.
I'll share some of my pics later na lang ah, just some images from my suroy-suroy last week. :)

DSWD gives P1.4 M assistance to
Core Shelter Project in Kabankalan
NEGROS Occidental - The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) gave P1.4 M to help the Core Shelter Project in Kabankalan City recently.
The check was received by Mayor Pedro P. Zayco from Julian Ledesma of DSWD Regional Office and Liane Garcia, Provincial Social Officer of Negros Occidental.
Witnessing the turn over of the check are the city councilors of Kabanakalan.
The project identified 20 families in Brgy. 6, 7, 8 and 9 whose shanties located along the riverbank were damaged during the last typhoon that hit the city.
Most of these families earn a meager income of P80.00/day that could hardly support their basic needs.
The Core Shelter Project is a package of assistance intended to assist victims of typhoons, whose houses until now are not rehabilitated by providing them comfortable housing facilities.
The City Social Welfare Department identify the beneficiaries based on the following: houses are not durable enough to last for 10 years; must not be a lot owner; has not availed of any shelter assistance from any organization and entity; income must be within poverty threshold; has the capacity and willingness to find means to provide counterpart in building their shelter like labor and other needed materials.

The song itself makes you proud of being a Bacolodian/Bacoleno/Bacolodnon.

I see. Thanks Kyle. :)
Anyway, I can see that festivals here are not only for merrymaking (which marks the nature of any Ilonggo or Negrense) but also bent for revenue-production too. The LGUs have seen the potential of these festivals to the local economy.
Also, the mayor is close to the Chinese community which is good. :okay:

TEN THINGS I HATE ABOUT BACOLOD CITY
10. The Bacolod Public Plaza had been considered as the heart of bacolod, but have you tried to get inside the male comfort room of the bacolod public plaza? it is just besides the department of tourism and bacolod photographers clu's office, oh my, did this came into their attention? oh my...
09. Manokan Country was being enfamed because of its savory and mouth watering chicken inasal, it is tagged as visayas home for this delicacy, but it stills suffers the same problem,it doesnt have a nice and hygenic comfort room, i guess advocates for their food turned-off when they went to the comfort room, its damn dirty... too bad...
08. Just a walking distance from the Bacolod City Hall was a haven of vendors who sell's pirated cd's and dvd's and also just a walking distance from the police precint, but as you pass by on the sidewalks this vendors could sell you an item with a smile... hahaha, in fact a city of smile...
07. Oh my Oh My, Pedicabs could freely stroll on the streets of bacolod, especially in burgos, hilado and luzurriaga... i hate them, damn traffic and damn risk to bump them, does this "sikads" must not be in main streets?
06. Dirty Lodging Houses, for 60 or 80 pesos you could have your climax squirt. hahaha... but what a shameful thing to hear was, they have sanitary permit and permit to operate. oh my oh my!
05. The Corazon Locsin Memorial Regional Hospital, nice name for the Provincial Hospital, but try to get in... its like a place of people who have no sense of smell... they are all immuned, but wheew... it could kill me... so badly... i went to the male surgical ward, dirty, to the maternity building.. dirty... and worse of all was the comfort room.. they need to fumigate it. whooaaa...
04. Try to get a trip going to abkasa or la herencia... its on the circumferencial road... i think the sidestreet was not been reached by DPS, garbage there was like a mountain stretching forward.. hahaha.... tsk tsk tsk.. not nice... where was the clean and green program that they are endorsing?
03. wanna have pleasure just for fifty pesos or less? just go in front of the Bacolod Cathedral, they are standing there every night... its up for bargain... youll have free STD's... the city health office and DSSD must clean them up...
02. Badjao Badjao... had spread in the suburb. they must be brought back to the place that where they belong... aw... nauubos piso ko sa kakadonate... and worse... hinihila pa damit ko pag di ko sila bigyan...
01. Politics? wanna know why? di ko na sasabihin... komplikado kasi... all of them were fussed.. thats all...
disclaimer: highly opinionated... no intentions to offend anyone... have a nice day guyz...
fritz here.. PROUD TO BE BACOLODNON...
sorry sa posting ko ha... i just quoted it... lahat kasi ng nakita ko sa thread eh puro positive... dami din namang mga negative kasi... but honestly speaking... daming progress sa bacolod.. i just want to quote those na hindi napapansin... dami pa sana eh... kaya lang... nakakahiya... baka awayin niyo ako guyz... hays...
peace evryone!!!
blight, I'm not offended...the 10 things you hate about bacolod are very true..and i think you presented it in a funny way.
#1. well the restrooms in manokan, public plaza and CLMMRH are definitely not nice. i guess palaihi ka ay? because you mentioned them in 3 different occasions.
#2. try to enter the ICU of corazon locsin, i bet you it is good in there.
#3. the pedicabs indeed are so...hmmm...not really annoying. i just think they are dangerous. but come to think of it, a lot of them have several children to feed...they have to make a living. Although, i never cease to be amazed of how courageous some people are of bringing children to this world ano..na kita gani na may mga trabaho daw nahadlok pa gawa.
#4. i remembered a few years back, the city government chartered several ships to bring these badjaos to their places of origin...but i guess pareho sang mga subay, bisan ano mo kis-a katago sang pagkaon, matultulan man nila diapon. Hopefully the governemtn could do something about it. In the meantime, just count your alms as your good deeds for the day.
#5. as for your "pleasures" well... just check their pink cards ah. practice ss.... mayo pa sila gani may kalipayan, iban nga tawo wala gid.

^^ These colorful and brightly lit Chinese lanterns used during Bacolaodiat can attest the creativity of Tsinoys in Bacolod. I noticed that they're using flashlights/torchlights as handle. At the same time serve as bulb to each lanterns. Great pics @Smile & @Boy.
Thats right jeff, and some were specially made just for them. I think their sponsors gave an all out support for them especially Convergys and 888 mall.

The long dream of most Bacolodnons/Negrenses to have a shopping mall of excellent standard built by our VERY OWN businessmen has finally arrived. Kudos to William Ong for this mighty endeavor. 888 Chinatown Square, if managed and promoted well, can even make the dominant players in retail(SM, Robinsons & Gaisano) a run for their money. Let's help make this worthy investment to our city the patronage it deserves. Once again, welcome 888 Chinatown Square to the exciting world of retail and dining in Bacolod.:banana::banana::banana::cheers:

sorry sa posting ko ha... i just quoted it... lahat kasi ng nakita ko sa thread eh puro positive... dami din namang mga negative kasi... but honestly speaking... daming progress sa bacolod.. i just want to quote those na hindi napapansin... dami pa sana eh... kaya lang... nakakahiya... baka awayin niyo ako guyz... hays...
peace evryone!!!
blight, I'm not offended...the 10 things you hate about bacolod are very true..and i think you presented it in a funny way.
#1. well the restrooms in manokan, public plaza and CLMMRH are definitely not nice. i guess palaihi ka ay? because you mentioned them in 3 different occasions.
#2. try to enter the ICU of corazon locsin, i bet you it is good in there.
#3. the pedicabs indeed are so...hmmm...not really annoying. i just think they are dangerous. but come to think of it, a lot of them have several children to feed...they have to make a living.

The success of Bacolaodiat 2008 can be attributed mainly to the cooperation of Bacolod's local govt and the private sector. Hopefully, this will continue so as to hasten Bacolod's growth and stability. @Smile, did you peek inside 888 Mall? Or do you have any news what are the stores to open in the said Mall? Thanks.:)

Mig, daw sala man pag-intiende mo sa ginpost ko. I know nga Feb 7 ang Chinese New Year. What I mean gintagaan dako nga importansya and making the Chinese New Year celebration big sa isa ka lugar pareho sang Binondo, Iloilo kag Bacolod. Binondo, Manila is the first place nga nagsugod selebrar (sang una) and Iloilo started it five years ago.
Bacolaodiat came about after Bacolod city mayor and some city officials and members of the Chinese community observed the Chinese New Year festival in Iloilo three years ago.
What do you mean third to hold? You mean 3rd Bacolaodiat Festival na ang Bacolod?Sang February 7 pa ini nag-umpisa kag asta pa ini buwas.Basi buot mo silingon isa sa tatlo ka dako nga mga gacelebrate sang Chinese new year which is also falls on the same date February 7.Dungan man lang tanan nga Chinese nagcelebrate sang Chinese new year sang Feb 7 man.Maskin ang Binondo,Manila February 7 man sila:lol:

Thats right, were the third to celebrate chinese new year and made it as our own festival. what made Bacolaodiat BIG this year are the unique and creative display of LUNAR ANIMAL floats parked in every corners of Capitol Lagoon, the street dance parade of Lanterns and the streetwide party in Lacson.
who knows, maybe some will follow and make it as their yearly festival too. I just hope the rest will create this kind of festival also to showcase the tsinoy tradition in their respective places.
I truly salute the organizers of Bacolaodiat and Iloilo CNY for making the festival a success..

@Lewd: You're precisely right that the Chinese New Year celebration in Bacolod, like Binondo and Iloilo, has now become a much bigger event. Though, I haven't heard that Bacolaodiat's conceptualization all the way to its inception three years ago came as a result of such visits from the city's local officials. I hope you can further give details on that item. IMO, the celebration of the Chinese New Year is being observed not only in those places you've mentioned. But almost in any other places in RP. However, as you said, its not as big as with those three places highlighted. We are glad that the city of Bacolod made this annual event as a festival. Hence, the title Bacolaodiat. Same as Masskara, Sinulog, Dinagyang, etc. :)

^^ The important thing is that with Chinese New Year celebrations being celebrated in this scale, it gives importance to our Chinese or Mestizo Sangley community, who in the first place, gives a big help to our local economy.
If the LGU is in good vibes with the Sangley community, again it helps the movement of the economy forward. :okay:

Actually, the original statement has one point of direction if we have to understand it very carefully. It's just it doesn't said straight to what it was meant to be and it's just hard to say it.The hidden word is
Emulation/Imitation.We have not mentioned here that we were the first, the second nor the third to celebrate this big.We have not even claimed for any of those titles, like the biggest or the first.
If we are sincere enough with our greetings or congratulatory remarks and have respect to the addressee it doesn't make sense to comment that you are reminding them/he /she of something or some conditions. It sound so impolite.Just be real,so simple.

In my opinion this thread should promote optimism and a sense of pride para sa tanan nga taga bacolod......and what should be posted here indi man tani maka paguba sng imahe sng aton ciudad.....but as a bacolodnon i accept all bad things na ara sa aton, like politika, kapigadohon, and all sorts of kamalamalahan...but then again this is my city, I love her for what she is...:)....
Migs indi gid na nila maintsindihan ang effort ni Migs Suv,Boy Negros and the rest of the gang taking those pictures around the city.Spending so much time in walking to find what to feature here.Indi man gani nila mahimo ini.

Strokes of Spring
Scenes of Chinese spring in art form welcomes the Bacolod celebration of the new year.
The art exhibit last week also paved the way for the BacoLaodiat Festival, which ends today.
On display were the flower-and-birds art works of Prof. Tsai Shui-Yuin (Arsenia Lim) and 16 of her students. Prof. Lim, along with Elsa Leonardia, wife of Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, cut the ceremonial ribbon.
The artist, who was born and resides in Manila , earned her university degree and took intensive art training in Fujian in Taiwan . Her skills as a mentor and artist has been exihibited for more than four decades.
Prof. Lim demonstrated her expertise after the opening of the exhibit, which also featured the works of her students – Mimi Cu, Celia Chao, Mary Uy, Lily Ty, Sofia Chen, Linda Au Ong, Teodora Ng, Tan Bee Hua, Bertha Sy, Lilly Ban Hui Uy, Kathleen Lin, Willie Pieh, Jeanie Chua, Santa Tan, Molly Yap and Rosita Tam

Bacolod gets Cuban ‘face-lift’ (http://sports.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view/20080211-118038/Bacolod-gets-Cuban-face-lift)
By June Navarro

BACOLOD CITY -- There is a bold move to transform this city into a breeding ground of future boxing Olympians.
Olympic chief of mission Monico Puentevella has adopted the Cuban grassroots program for the sport by herding all up-and-coming boxers from the province into one tournament that he hopes to be replicated in other parts of the country.
“I’ve been to Cuba with the national boxing team so many times in the past and this is how it’s being done,” said the Bacolod City representative on Sunday during the championship bouts of the 1st Golden Gloves Monico Cup.
The tournament has attracted more than 200 adolescent boxers aged 13-16 since the elimination rounds began in October last year. From that number, a total of 44 young boxers have survived the test and seen action in 22 championship bouts in 11 weight categories.
According to Puentevella, Cuba also has a tournament of the same magnitude in almost every Cuban town on Saturdays, the prime reason behind its success in the Olympics.
“No wonder they have won at least 40 gold medals in the Olympics,” said Puentevella. “It has become their (Cubans’) way of life. So, when a Cuban boxer goes to the Olympics, he already has fought more than a hundred bouts.”
Noted for its rich source of boxing talents, the Negros Occidental provincial capital has produced several Southeast Asian Games, Asian Games and Olympic medalists like Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco, Leopoldo Serantes, Rey Galido, Leopoldo Cantancio, Bryan Vicera, Roel Velasco and Elias Recaido.
In the national team, at least eight boxers hail from Bacolod, including Joan Tipon and lady boxer Mitchell Martinez.
“I hope to replicate the same program with other boxing-inclined provinces,” said Puentevella, citing Cebu, North Cotabato and General Santos City, among others.
So far, only Harry Tañamor has qualified to the 2008 Beijing Olympics after the national boxing team failed to book a single ticket during a recent qualifying in Thailand.
Telecommunications magnate Manny V. Pangilinan, the godfather of the RP boxing squad, has asked the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, headed by Manny Lopez, to review its programs.
Shortly a week after the debacle, Lopez and Philippine Sports Commission chair William “Butch” Ramirez flew to Cuba to scout for two Cuban coaches, one who will train the Olympic qualifiers and the other to be sent to Bacolod and other boxing-loving cities.

P6-B ethanol investment pogrammed
Myrna M. Velasco
Bronzeoak Philippines Inc., the local subsidiary of Bronzeoak Ltd. of the United Kingdom, is programming P6-billion worth of investments for ethanol facilities in Luzon and Mindanao.
Bronzeoak is reportedly pursuing the projects in partnership with Zabaleta and Co. According to Jose Maria Zabaleta Jr., managing director of Bronzeoak Philippines, the ethanol plants are proposed to be sited in Bukidnon and the lahar lands in Pampanga.
"Each project will cost at least P3 billion because of the electricity component and we also capture CO2 (carbon dioxide) and we sell it to the beverage industry," he said.
In particular, he noted that "the Bukidnon plant will be located on the fringes on the existing cane industry but the projects are in the planning stage."
Bronzeoak is putting its bet on the 24-hectare property in Kibawe, Southern Bukidnon for sugar cane plantation to ensure feedstock for the proposed ethanol facility in the area.
The company is also looking at prospects of "crop shifting" activities in Bukidnon’s neighboring province of North Cotabato. Instead of the traditional corn crops, it is being proposed that farmers be enticed to shift crops to sugar cane.
A year before the mandate for 5.0-percent ethanol blend to gasoline products, the government is still worried of sustaining domestic ethanol supply given some slow pace of investments in the sector.
Without adequate ethanol supply that can be sourced locally, the option left for the oil companies will be to import the product that it will blend with gasoline to be sold at the pumps.
The only ethanol facility scheduled to come on stream before the E5 mandate (5.0-percent ethanol blend to gasoline) is the San Carlos Bioenergy facility; of which output has already been committed to satiate the requirements of dominant player Petron Corporation.
The San Carlos ethanol plant is capable of producing 100,000 to 120,000 liters of anhydrous ethanol on a daily basis.
The facility also has an integrated biomass-based generating facility which can produce up to 9.0 megawatts.
Even prior to the E5 mandate, though, several oil companies already advanced bids of selling gasoline with E10 (10-percent ethanol) blend since 2005.

Handumanan performers BacoLaodiat first placers
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO & NIDA BUENAFE
Handumanan National High School bested seven other participants in the first BacoLaodiat Lantern and Streetdance Competition in Bacolod City Saturday and received P70,000 in cash as prize.
The Dunang Manggad Dancers landed second place and was also adjudged Best in Lantern. The group received P50,000 in cash plus an additional P5,000 as consolation prize. While the Ws W6 Dancers landed third place and received P30,000 in cash.
Brgy. Robles of La Castellana won as the Best in Performance and received P5,000 in cash.
All the participants received trophies designed by Bacolod artist Charlie Co and executed by Rex Cuenca.
The participants paraded from the 21st Street down to Lacson Street where they performed on a stage in front of the Philippine National Bank.
The judges were freelance executive producer Madie Gallaga, international consultant Gurch Raineir, Silay Cultural Officer Taffy Acot, Bago Tourism Officer Clem Del Castillo, Marius Centino and National Commission on Culture and Arts awardee, Dwight Rodrigazo as chairman.
Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia lauded last night the people behind the 3 rd Bacolaodiat Festival for the distinction of organizing the longest and biggest Chinese New Year celebration in the country.
During the event's closing rites at 6 th Street -Lacson, Leonardia said Bacolod is the only local government in the Philippines to pass an ordinance creating an entity like the BacoLaodiat and institutionalizing the celebration every year.
No other city in the country, except Bacolod , marks the Chinese New Year Festival with such gaiety, color, and merrymaking for four straight nights, Leonardia said.
He also congratulated all performers who made the affair colorful, and the public who joined in the various activities since BacoLaodiat opened in Feb. 7.
Echoing the message of thanks from the city government was BacoLaodiat chairman and president William Ong who enjoined the Filipino and Chinese communities in Negros Occidental to set aside their cultural differences and instead complement each other and explore all possible avenues to bring out the best from both cultures.
He said cultural diversity should not cause divisiveness among the Filipinos and Chinese in Negros Occidental.
In partnership with the city government, Ong said the Chinese community aspires to uplift the welfare of the Bacolodnons, in particular, and the Negrenses in general.
Together, he said the Filipino and Chinese communities can spell the difference, make things happen and bring change in the community.
Also present during the closing rites were Bacolod City Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, SP Committee on Tourism chairman Homer Bais, and Bacolaodiat 2007 chairman Luis Chan.
The celebration was capped by a colorful fireworks display at the Capitol Lagoon.*CGS/NAB

ATO maintains stand
on closure of airport
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Air Transportation Office Executive Director Daniel Dimagiba yesterday said their position remains the same that the old Bacolod Airport should continue to be closed due to its proximity to the new airport in Silay.
He said they submitted their recommendation to the office of Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza last month.
However, when asked if this is the final recommendation of the 11-man team he created to study the request of Mayor Evelio Leonardia for the reopening of the Bacolod Airport , Dimagiba, in a phone interview, said he does not know anything about the creation of an 11-man team and suggested that Mendoza be asked about it.
In an interview with the DAILY STAR last month, Dimagiba had said that he issued an office order creating the team with Director Wilfredo Borra of the Airways Navigational Services as chairman and Inocencio Insierto as vice chairman.
All of the nine other members of the team are technical personnel who will listen to the position of Bacolod and may come to the city to conduct another ocular inspection, he had told Aksyon Radyo.
Dimagiba said the team will determine the viability of reopening the Bacolod airport, taking into consideration the facts presented by the group lobbying for it. He said the report he submitted to Mendoza recommended the continued closure of the Bacolod Airport .
The Bacolod airport was shut down Jan. 17 after the last flight to give way for the opening of the P5.6 billion New Bacolod-Silay in Silay City on Jan. 18.
Mayor Evelio Leonardia, has said earlier that he, together with Rodolfo Alvarez, Charlie Hagad and Lucy Ponce, met last week with the ATO committee created through Executive Order No. 6208 dated Jan. 23, 2008, to study and recommend for the proposed reopening of the old Bacolod Airport .
He said they presented to the committee their case during a meeting where Dimagiba, Insierto and Danilo Abareta, Cesar Calingasan and Charlemagne Gilo were present.
Leonardia said they requested the committee to have an open mind and they were told that, before a final recommendation is made, they will sit down with the team from Bacolod first.
He said that during the meeting with the ATO they were assured that the runway lights and equipment are in Bacolod only for storage and safekeeping.*CGS

Quest for airport retention bleak
By Gil ALfredo B. Severino
THE quest for the Old Bacolod Airport to be retained apparently is a losing battle as news of Dr. Lucio Tan's fencing of the runway stirs discussion among the business and media circles.
As of press time last Sunday, Sun.Star Bacolod failed to reach Tan whether he is withdrawing support for the old airport or have other business plans for the area.
The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary, Leandro Mendoza however has a copy of a report submitted by DOTC Acting Assistant Secretary Daniel Dimagiba on the retention of the Bacolod old airport.
The report dated last January 5 stated among other things, that the Air Transport Office (ATO) has "no money", that the airport is "not safe" and is "not needed".
The report stressed the huge drain to the budget of ATO in maintaining the New Bacolod-Silay airport alone citing the ten times increase of electricity bills, among other expenses.
If Bacolod so desires to run, maintain and manage the Old Bacolod airport, it has to shell out an estimated P14 million monthly as cost for operations.
In the report, ATO recommends to the Department of Finance (DOF) to sell the portion of government lot where the old airport presently stands so it can recover the five billion peso investment of the new airport.
ATO insists as well the importance of safety. Ato says it will be too complex traffic wise to operate two airports. Both need sufficient personnel to operate both facilities and there is a probability of air confusion endangering 665,144 passengers.
ATO can handle the complexities of air traffic management but this would mean additional investment in modern equipment and additional manpower expertise.
The Bacolod-Silay Airport accommodates 6,922 aircraft and 665,144 passenger movements every year and can still spare more rooms for additional flights.
Therefore, there is no need for another second airport for Bacolod, the report said.
The report stood for commercial viability and urban development, citing, that the retention restricts certain areas of the City like noise pollution to nearby residents.
It further recommends the conversion of the old airport into industrial and commercial districts to further enhance economic activities of the City.

Make Bacolod airport
ecozone, Gloria asked
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
A group representing different sectors in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental appealed to the President to establish the old Bacolod Airport as a private economic zone.
In their letter to President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, the group said that as author of R.A. 7916 or “The Special Economic Zone Act of 1995”, she has made it possible for the Philippines to excel in the international market by paving way for more than 132 economic zones, earning for the country a total of P1.03 trillion in revenues in 10 years, and providing work for almost 60,000 Filipinos.
The letter was signed by Bro. Rolando Dizon, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, Raymund Nones, Andrew Regalado, Roberto Montelibano, Bobby Magalona, Mary Verdure Tolentino, Teresa Villanueva, Anthony Visitacion, Engiemar Tupas, Ralph Sarmiento, Philip Wen Bombita, Anita Rabago and Greg Vallejera.
The group claimed that hundreds of famous international corporations rely on Filipino craftsmanship and ingenuity inside these ecozones to be able to offer world-class products and services.
They said Bacolod City has proven that it can compete with other cities having already captured the biggest locators in the information and communications technology industry. Five special economic zones have been proclaimed by the President to be ICT parks and buildings in Bacolod and these sites are now the workplace of almost 4,000 employees, they said.
They appealed to the President to establish the Bacolod City Special Economic Zone in the old airport site before her term ends.
They added that PEZA Director General Lilia De Lima, in a letter to the Bacolod Sanggunian dated June 12, 2007, had offered their full support to make the City of Bacolod a more profitable site for investments by converting the existing Bacolod City Airport into a Special Economic Zone, once the new airport in Silay starts its operation.
The group said a SEZ in Bacolod will maximize the availability of highly-qualified, as well as, highly-trainable labor pool produced by private and public colleges and universities including state colleges and universities and technical-vocational schools in the province and Region VI.
They said the old airport site has existing infrastructure and structures hence, the locators would be able to set-up quickly since the human resource, telecommunications infrastructure and local government support are already easily obtainable. The site is also highly accessible, compact and conducive for economic activity and is just across the first IT building in Region VI, the Robinson's Metro Bacolod, they said.*CGS

This 2-0-0-8, Masskara city has more reasons to smile. Bacolod is bound to be the next exciting commercial and entertainment
city in the country.
Thankfully, the two major call centers in the country already made a significant dot in the

These developments are huge in terms of transforming Bacolod's skyline. Its effect to the local economy is reverberating.
Renewed interest in the city reflects a great cultural and lifestyle change. This just didn't happen overnight. There's years
of reinvestment going on. The progress felt is a culmination of a steady stream of developments and policies made over the
years by our dear local officials, past and present. Control of illegal settlers helped make conditions ripe
for this latest blast of construction. Cleaner and safer streets made the city more attractive to out-of-town visitors,
as well as suburbanites.
Clearly!!! Bacolod will continue to shine this 2008

tumpak...14 million is a big amount. That idea is very promising knowing that it will help unfortunate ones to attain education. I hope the Mayor can think of something better aside from reopening the old airport. :)

Maayo at natauhan na ang some of our authorties and people who wants to have the Singcang airport reopened!
That area is destined for great use, and not just a flying school! Such as an IT Park, a residential area, commercial-residential, industrial, etc. It would contribute more to Bacolod than it is as a flying school.

Negrenses spice up PBA All-Filipino finals
FERNANDEZ WANTS TO PUT CLAMPS ON YAP
BY CEDELF TUPAS
Two Negrenses will be on the spotlight when the best-of-seven Philippine Basketball Association All-Filipino finals begin on Friday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Purefoods ace gunner James Yap, who hails from Escalante City , will be testing the wits of Sta. Lucia coach Boyet Fernandez of Valladolid town in the finals, after both their teams hurdled Red Bull and Alaska , respectively Sunday night.
And four days before the series tips off, Fernandez has already raised the alarm on a possible offensive explosion from Yap, the 2005-2006 season Most Valuable Player.
“We can only stop Purefoods, if we stop James Yap,” Fernandez, a former Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod Red Eagle, told the DAILY STAR last night in a telephone interview.
Fernandez and Yap's appearance in the finals did not come easy.
Fernandez, a wily streak-shooting point guard during his heydays, is only in his second conference as Sta. Lucia coach and admits being surprised by the progress made by his team.
“Our team was not really expected to be here (in the finals). So, at least, we are proving to our detractors that we're worthy to be in the finals,” he added.
“It's a great achievement for me so the pressure of winning will always be there,” said Fernandez, who steered the franchise to a record eight-game winning streak en route to the semifinals.
“The players have embraced my system so I also give credit to them,” he added. “We are now a defensive-running team”.
Fernandez said their entry to the finals is a proof of the work ethic of his players and their acceptance of their different roles in the team.
Yap , on the other hand, shrugged off knee and groin injuries to power Purefoods to the finals.
For his feat, he earned his fourth player of the week award.
“My mindset is really to play if I can still shrug off the pain,” Yap said a day after posting 28 points to lead the Giants to an 83-71 win over the Bulls.
The explosion came after he registered 25 points in a close 96-95 escape in Game 5, where he admitted being bothered by a strained groin he suffered after favoring his left knee that was badly bruised the Sunday before.
“My team needed to win so I had to give it my all,” he said.
His coach, Ryan Gregorio praised Yap for “rising to the challenge even after an injury”.
“Just when people thought that he might have ran out of gas, he surprises everybody with an amazing display of basketball skills in the most important game of the conference,” Gregorio said in the PBA website www.pba.ph.
Yap hopes to lead Purefoods to a fifth All-Filipino crown.
Both Yap and Fernandez acknowledged the long and arduous road to the finals.
“It was difficult getting here so we have to give our best now that we're here,” Fernandez said.
But Yap thinks he has more reason to win Game 1 on Friday.
His wife, actress Kris Aquino, celebrates her birthday on Valentine's Day and he turns 26 on the day of the finals.
“It will be the perfect birthday gift for us,” he said.*CPT

Record field anew for 61st PAL Interclub in Negros
BACOLOD – Another record-breaking roster will take to the fairways when the Philippine Airlines Interclub, the country’s most storied golf team tournament, stages its annual championships in Negros Occidental later this month.
The 61st edition of the regular Men’s Interclub, universally acknowledged as the national clubs championship of the Philippines, will be played from February 27 to March 1.
It will be preceded by the 21st staging of the Seniors Interclub, a separate tournament for the clubs’ senior players, from February 21 to 24.
As of press time, a total of 160 clubs – 84 in the Seniors division and 77 in the Men’s – have signed up to play.
With each Seniors team comprising a maximum of eight players and a typical Men’s team counting a maximum of 10, organizers are expecting over 1,400 players to participate in what is touted to be the largest-ever event in Philippine golf annals.
The 160 clubs already entered easily surpass last year’s previous-high attendance in Cagayan de Oro, where 140 contingents, divided into 70 Seniors and 70 Men’s clubs, played.
The current roster includes 35 international clubs in the Seniors and 34 in the Men’s division, both record highs as well. Among them are clubs from Las Vegas, Guam, New Jersey, Florida and Shanghai (China), which are all making their Interclub debut this year.
The foreign teams are sure to add spice to an already competitive tournament, dominated the last two years by powerhouse Canlubang, two-time defending champions in both Seniors and Men’s play.
The Sugar Barons will gun for an unprecedented two-division “three-peat” in Negros, a feat never before accomplished in PAL Interclub history. Luisita came closest with double victories in 1992 and 1993.
“More than record, we just want to win it all again, if possible. I think we have a pretty good chance at it,” said Rolly Viray, golf manager of Canlubang.
Expected to crowd Canlubang for honors are perennial contenders Manila Southwoods and Del Monte in the Men’s tournament, and 12-time champion Luisita in the Seniors.
The 61st PAL Interclub, dubbed “Sugar and Tee,” will be jointly played on the sugar-growing province’s two premier golf courses – the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in downtown Bacolod City and the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in nearby Murcia.
Both par-70 layouts have hosted the Interclub many times in the past, including the milestone 50th championships in 1997 and, most recently, the 58th tournament in 2002.
This year’s competition is backed by platinum sponsors Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, GE Aviation, MTV Philippines and Solar Sports.
The major sponsors are Action Asia, Business Mirror, Crossover, Pacsports and Royal Caribbean.
Fortune Tobacco, GECAS, MasterCard, People Asia and RMN are the corporate sponsors, while Callaway Golf, Century Park Hotel, Lufthansa Technik and Patio Pacific Boracay are the minor sponsors.

[B]The current roster includes 35 international clubs in the Seniors and 34 in the Men’s division, both record highs as well. Among them are clubs from Las Vegas, Guam, New Jersey, Florida and Shanghai (China), which are all making their Interclub debut this year.
[/COLOR]

Yup, that's what I've heard too but I think there was a resistance among the CPU constituents and the alumni.
But anyway, congrats to WNU! :okay:
So in Bacolod City, there is:
University of Saint La Salle*
University of Negros Occidental - Recoletos
West Negros University
If there is something that I've missed, please add it up. Thanks!
(*I've heard that it will be renamed DLSU-Bacolod since I've head all of La Salle schools have one admin...one La Salle, please confirm if this is true).
not the one in bacolod, the la salle university system is composed of the schools within the mega-manila area...
La Salle Bacolod is actually the second la salle school established in the country it is an independent university system to the one in manila..and it is actually enjoys autonomy from CHED
