WE ARE NOW WEST NEGROS UNIVERSITY
Last January 25, 2008, West Negros College, through its President, Dr. Suzette Agustin wrote a correspondence to Dr. Heracleo Lagrada, Director IV, Office of Program and Standards of the Commission on Higher Education. The correspondence conveyed the institution's readiness for a final CHED visit to inspect and evaluate WNC's level of compliance relative to CHED Memo Order #48, Series of 1996.
http://www.wnc.edu.ph/images/news/2008/university.jpg
February 5, 2008, CHED Commissioners, namely Commissioner Nona Ricafort, Commissioner Luningning Umar and Commissioner Saturnino Ocampo visited WNC and conducted the detailed and rigorous process of verification.
Last February 11, 2008, during a meeting en banc (complete attendance), the Commission on Higher Education have found West Negros College to be in FULL COMPLIANCE of CHED requirements. After a thorough deliberation, it has granted West Negros College the UNIVERSITY STATUS.
With this, our humble institution says: TO GOD BE THE GLORY
West Negros a
university now – CHED
BY NIDA BUENAFE
The Commission on Higher Education has granted West Negros College university status, giving Bacolod City three universities now.
The school was evaluated by CHED on its student admission policy, degree program, accreditation status, quality of instruction including faculty and personnel staff, research program and extension services, library and laboratory facilities, a statement from the information office of WNC said.
CHED commissioners Nona Ricafort Luningning Umar and Saturnino visited WNC on Feb. 5 to inspect and evaluate the school's level of compliance for a university status.
The statement added that, after a rigorous and detailed process of verification and thorough deliberation, the commission granted the WNC a university status in its Feb. 11 en banc meeting.
The other day, students, faculty, school personnel and administrators gathered at the gym for a thanksgiving service, a WNC faculty member who refused to be identified said.
Founded in 1948, West Negros is a second level accredited school by the Philippine Association of Colleges and Universities-Commission on Accreditation and awards degrees in associate, bachelor, master, and doctoral levels.
An average of 1,500 students graduate from the school every year, making a sizable contribution to the city's roll of young professionals in different fields, information from WNC's website said.
The school's mission statement is to provide an excellent education that is Christian in orientation, holistic in approach, Filipino in character, global in perspective and geared towards the total development of the person, it also said.
The other universities in Bacolod are the University of St. La Salle and the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos . *NAB

BIR eyes Capitol land for building -- Zayco
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The Bureau of Internal Revenue has expressed interest in buying 4,000 square meters of provincial government property along Gatuslao Street in front of the Land Bank of the Philippines in Bacolod City to build its offices, Negros Occidental Acting Gov. Isidro Zayco said yesterday.
The provincial government has offered to sell the agency the property at P15,000 per square meter, Zayco said.
The BIR is applying for a P180 million loan from the LBP for the project, Zayco said.
The BIR is also asking the provincial government to advance the money for the construction project while it is waiting for the release of its loan but, Zayco said, they are still studying the matter.
“We will have to meet with the Land Bank to discuss the BIR offer next week,” Zayco added.
“All the property of the provincial government along Gatuslao Street is open for negotiation with interested parties,” he said.
Meanwhile, Zayco said preparations are underway for the annual Panaad Festival from April 26 to May 3.*CPG

Kabankalan, DBP sign
P508M road project deal
The Kabankalan City government and the Development Bank of the Philippines yesterday entered into a P508.63-million loan contract for the construction of a road network across the city's various barangays.
The contract was signed by Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr. and Jonathan Teves, head of DBP Regional Management Center , in the presence of Adonica Estores, DBP Kabankalan branch head; Vice Mayor Delia Anacan; and Councilor Raul Rivera, chairman of the committee on infrastructures, and other officials at the rites held at the Sangguniang Panlungsod session hall.
A video presentation of the barangay roads to be constructed in barangays Linao, Tampalon, Tabugon, Tagoc, Pinaguinpinan, Inapoy, Bantayan and Locotan was shown before the contract signing.
City Engineer Roger Diaz, who discussed the background of the project, said 44.54 kilometers of roads will be constructed spanning these barangays.
Zayco said in his message that the DBP increased the loan of Kabankalan on the assurance that its economy is stable and bankable.
He said only P300 million is allocated for road construction. The P200 million will be used for other infrastructures projects the city might undertake.
Zayco said the construction of new roads will boost business transactions and foster closer relations with its neighboring city, Bayawan, and towns of Ayungon, Mabinay and Manjuyod in Negros Oriental.
He also said Kabankalan will soon start the construction of its ultra-modern slaughter and auction house in Brgy. Hilamonan.*NLG

And guys, know what we can encourage PNB to open up their top floors for a resto, its nice for bacolod to have an alternative diner, with a view. I personally have a lot of feedbacks from my counterparts that came here in bacolod.
nabasahan ko sa provincial website:
There are 1,318 schools in the province, including 53 registered technical schools. Of these, 158 are private schools, including University of Saint La Salle, and University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos. Banking and finance is likewise a thriving industry in Negros Occidental. According to the latest count, there are 389 financial institutions competing for businesses in the province. 149 of these are banks. Negros Occidental offers several advantages for those who are doing business in the province. It is strategically located near Metro Manila, Cebu and Davao, all major international gateways with maximum travel time of only about 4 hours between the Philippines and its neighbors in Asia. It is equipped with major infrastructure facilities for easy travel and shipment of goods within and outside of Negros.
*** i love this info because, these schools where all neatly distributed all around the province, a feat that not all of other provinces could reach, well other than the provinces of region 6. thats sustainable development, spread it all over. kag subong may WNU, proud ta suzette, she did a good job.

Local ICT group partners
with MT industry alliance
Stakeholders of the local information and communications technology sector met with officials of the medical transcription industry in Manila last Monday to discuss plans to bring jobs and investments and technology transfer opportunities to Bacolod and Negros Occidental.
Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for ICT Inc., said their meeting with Myla Reyes, president of the Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines Inc., and her colleagues, including Talent Development Committee chairperson Evelyn Abat, was held at the e-Services Philippines Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibitions at the SMX Convention Center in Manila.
Batapa-Sigue said BNEFIT pointed out to MTIAPI that their main objective is to promote Bacolod as one of the new wave cities for outsourcing and offshore industries.
She said both parties agreed to conduct a series of comprehensive roadshows next month to introduce opportunities in the medical transcription industry to Negrenses.
The activities will highlight the industry linkages with local investors, government, private and business sector, academe, she said.
The roadshows will enable MTIAPI, an alliance of the country's MT companies and leaders, to show the growth of the Philippine MT industry that is already recognized by its US counterpart.
Mary Tolentino, chairperson of the IT Schools Network of Negros Occidental, there is a need to develop a good assessment tool to determine the quality of MT trainings in the country so that the required labor pool is met.
Batapa-Sigue said also plans to meet with representatives from the academe to discuss the integration of basic MT skills and knowledge in the general curriculum.*NLG

Solon okay with any of
2 Cuban coaches
TO TRAIN BOXERS IN BACOLOD , OTHER SOUTHERN PROVINCES
BY CEDELF TUPAS
As far as Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella is concerned, it doesn't matter who between the two Cuban coaches hired by the Philippine Sports Commission will be based in Bacolod City to train boxers in the province.
Puentevella, who has strongly pushed for one of the two Cuban coaches in Bacolod to strengthen the boxing program in the Visayas and Mindanao , said he will discuss the matter with Philippine Sports Commission chairman William Ramirez and Amateur boxing chief Manny Lopez.
The two coaches are Juan Enrique Steyners Tissert and Dagoberto Rojas Scott. They belong to a pool of coaches outside of Cuba 's national boxing program but Lopez said the two have the experience and expertise to help the country's boxing program
“We will just wait. Any of the two (coaches) will do. The plan will be beneficial for us. Definitely, they will be able to help us in our effort to produce future Olympic champions,” the Bacolod solon said.
Puentevella stressed that the coach will also be tapped for other Visayan provinces as well as in Mindanao .
The assigning of a coach in Bacolod is just one of the thrusts to improve the country's boxing program, he said, adding that he is also pushing for the return of elementary boxing in the Palarong Pambansa under the Department of Education.
Lopez expressed confidence the coaches will be able to improve national boxers performance in international competitions.
“Based on our evaluation, these two are the best coaches who can help our national boxers in their training and preparation for various international competitions, including the Asian Olympic Qualifier and the Beijing Olympics,” said Lopez.
The pair has helped Cuba win two silver medals in the Olympics and two golds and four bronzes in the World Championships.
A former coach of the Cuban national boxing team, Tissert, 57, is a member of the National Technical Commission, which draws the training plans for the national squad. He was contracted to help the Spanish boxing team in 1992 for two years before returning to Cuba to handle the national boxing squad.
Scott, 41, has accounted for one Olympic silver medal and four bronze medals in the World Championships and two golds and one silver in the World Cup.
So far, only Harry Tañamor has clinched a spot in the Beijing Games with Bacoleño Asian Games champion Joan Tipon still seeking a berth.*CPT

USLS to host Nestea beach volley Visayas qualifying
(http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2008/02/14/sports/usls.to.host.nestea.beach.volley.visayas.qualifying.html)
THE Negros Occidental Volleyball Association (Nova) headed by former Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) president Roger Banzuela is set to host the Visayas qualifying tournament of the 2008 Nestea National Beach Volley Championship on April 7-10, 2008 at the University of St. la Salle sand court.
Top school-based beach volley teams from the Visayas region are expected to compete in this prestigious summer volleyball event which is sanctioned by the Beach Volleyball Association of the Philippines headed by Banzuela.
However, the tournament coincides with the staging of the 2008 National PRISAA tournament in Zamboanga City which is scheduled on April 6 to 12.
Iloilo Doctors College and University of St. la Salle topped the men's and women's divisions, respectively, during the recent Western Visayas Regional PRISAA competition in Kalibo, Aklan and are expected to represent the region in the national PRISAA where Western Visayas is the overall defending champion.
Banzuela said it will be up to the players to decide which event they will prioritize since the national PRISAA dates were only announced recently without informing the national sports associations (NSAs) while the Nestea event has been set as early as last year.
Meanwhile, the Philippine Volleyball Federation (PVF) accredited referees will have their national congress on Feb. 15-17 at the USLS.
The event is being held every two years to give professional volleyball referees an opportunity to upgrade their skills in officiating and to be updated with the innovations in the rules of the game.
It is also being regionalized in order to make it affordable for local referees, Banzuela said.
Victor Abalos, chairman of the PVF referees committee together with another international referee and Banzuela are the resource speakers of the congress.
Interested participants can get in touch with the USLS varsity sports office through tel. no. 434-6929 for information.

Grabe, another event :) Thriving gid ang hotels and restaurants(xempre, including us hehe) There are a lot of developments this 2008, gapangibot lang! hehehe :nuts:
The BIG advantage of Sylvia Manor Hotel, among its so called "competitions", is that its located right at the heart of downtown Bacolod. Pretty convenient for people who have fully loaded itineraries.:)
We will be seing a lot of these bulk of passengers come the Mason event, Panaad and of course this years Masskara celebration.:)

hahahaha!!!! its really going to be BIG. :) the number is getting bigger and bigger :) and Mackoy, Its a good treat for new Hotels coz they will be blessed by this Convention. Our official Hotel (SMH) will also be getting a bigger slice here...their Hotel is near the venue so i guess unahan ang mga guests diri sa SMH :) but of course, ang Pavillon ang ma shine this coming April kay diri ang Venue. :)
:banana::banana: 3,000 guest for this covention? This is really huge in number and remember it's Summer Time,it's a school holiday ,plenty are heading out for a break and for sure Bacolod will be going to get its share from bulk of local tourist including the international tourist.
This is why i'm so optimistic about the future of Bacolod because most of the wealthy Negrense are mostly engage in enterprenuership. They are pouring thier money in businesses like hotel, resorts etc etc .They are leading the way in shaping Bacolod's future and so the other investors follow.

Teleperformance hiring more agents in Bacolod
TELEPERFORMANCE, one of the pioneer call centers in Bacolod City and said to be the 2nd biggest in the industry, invited Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Jr., to meet their Executive Vice President for Philippine Operations, Trevor Friensen who is in Bacolod for the first time.
Friensen and the other Teleperformance executives informed the mayor of their expansion plans in Bacolod, which will mean hiring more call center agents in the city. This will mean more employment for the people of Bacolod and nearby localities, Leonardia said.
Presently Telepeformance has 400 call center agents.
New call center Manager for Bacolod, Don Sausa was also introduced to the Mayor. The executives said Teleperformance is impressed with the business climate in Bacolod, especially the peace and order situation and the Mayor's accessibility to the business community.
Councilor Wilson Gamboa, Chairman of the Committee on Traffic, was consulted on the possibility of having public utility jeeps pass by the call center for the convenience of the employees of the call center. Gamboa promised to bring the matter to a public hearing

Sunshine Channel turns 2
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
VALENTINE'S date will always be remembered as the major streets of Bacolod will be filled by the boom, blast and blare of Sunshine channel 14 motorcade.
From music to issues, news to infos, all these have been hurdled by this leading cable channel in Bacolod, the Sunshine Channel, Channel 14 in Bacolod's local television dial. It has an insignia of a rainbow and a rainbow, very symbolic of what it would like to become and what will it be at the end.
Although "Somewhere over the rainbow" may not be the theme song chosen for the occasion but the "sunshine" has a magical touch of turning the cool sky moisture into a beautiful rainbow.
For this what Sunshine Channel 14 is all about "Sunshine" and "rainbow" insignia are very symbolic of life, its dynamism and a wide variety of program settings.
Today, at its infancy, Sunshine Channel 14 will turn two years old and already, Bacolod City has felt its dent in upholding freedom of expression and a commitment to educate its clientele with updated pieces of information.
Sunshine Channel 14 is manned by blocktimers coming from different orientations, political persuasions and a thousand and one opinions.
In a statement provided by Sunshine Channel's marketing officer Joy Villones, this cable outfit has "intense broadcasting and coverage, meeting the expectations of 31,000 viewers all over Bacolod City."
As it celebrates the two-year experience in the cable market, Sunshine Channel according to Villones is "a dream truly coming close to reality because of its desired goal to be better among the best local cable channel."
"Our basis is the mere fact the we are being recognized by the viewers," Villones said.
Much is yet to be hurdled, but Sunshine Channel tandem leadership veteran Primo Esleyer and Amado Villacarlos, president and managing director respectively, are both ready to take up the challenges of the tasks ahead of them.
Happy anniversary!

RP XI training camp set March 23 in Bacolod
By Henry C. Villalva
NEWLY appointed RP men's national football squad coach Norman Fegidero, Jr. said training camp for members of the national team who will represent the country in the May 11-18 Asian Challenge Cup slated here at the Panaad Stadium pitch is scheduled to start of March 23.
Fegidero, a former mainstay of the RP team, which he served for over ten years, is slated to leave for Manila on Tuesday next week to meet with officials of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) and finalize details regarding the formation of the national team.
"I expect to have the things Need to do for the team stipulated in the contract I will sign with the PFF so that I can go about performing my task unhampered," Fegidero told SunStar Bacolod Wednesday.
He said commitment is the first thing he wants to get from players if they want to play under him. "It's not only commitment to play for the country. It also covers commitment to strictly adhere to my system of training and requirements for self-discipline," he said.
The former Philippine Air Force striker who scored the lone goal that eliminated Malaysia during the 1991 Manila Southeast Asian Games, is considered a common choice for the coaching job by PFF officials led by former national coach Juan Cutillas.
A stickler for hard work, Fegidero is also known as a creative and prodigious forward who knows a goal-making opportunity when he sees one and who hates not being able to convert a neat pass from a teammate, a trait which he has painstakingly inculcated his players in the West Negros University varsity squad, a side he had led to eight successive titles in the annual Negros Occidental Private Schools Sports Cultural Educational Association (NOPSSCEA) tournament.
"I expect Nonoy to teach his players in the RP team the work ethic that has made him one of the most prolific forwards the country has ever produced," said Fegidero's former teammate in the RP team, midfielder Alfredo "Bambi" Dioso, Jr. who played with him in the 1991 Manila SEA Games.
"Through his vast experience in the national team he knows what is needed and perhaps now is the time for him to try and implement what we failed to have during our time as players," Dioso added.
Fegidero said he expects to take a look at some remnants of the national team when he goes to Manila next week. "Maybe I'll try to find out who among them can still be tapped for the Challenge Cup," he said.

Salamat gid Migs Boynegros!
Municipality Of Don Salvador Benedicto
Located at the center of the hinterlands of the entire north of Negros Occidental, Don Salvador Benedicto was primarily established to consolidate all the remote barangays of San Carlos City and the towns of Calatrava and Murcia which were apparently neglected due to inaccessibility. Its founding was finalized on February 9, 1983 upon the approval of Batas Pambansa Blg. 336 by former Pres. Ferdinand Marcos. The legislation was authored by Assemblymen Alfonso Garcia and Joe Varela, Jr.
The town got its name in honor of the late Vice Governor Salvador Benedicto who played an important role in setting up aRevolutionary Government in Negros Island particularly in the area, Brgy. Igmaya-an, when the country was occupied by the Japanese during World War II.
The territorial formation of DS Benedicto is composed of two (2) barangays from the Municipality of Murcia (Pandanon and Igmaya-an), three (3) barangays from the City of San Carlos (Kumaliskis, Bunga and Pinowayan-Prosperidad), and two (2) barangays from the Municipality of Calatrava (Bagong Silang-Marcelo and Bago-Lalong).
Sixty percent of the residents speak Cebuano and the rest Ilonggo and other dialects.
The people have adapted the art of "kali" otherwise known as "arnis or escrima" as their cultural heritage. The traditional martial arts of the Filipino people since the 7th century, it is designed for physical training, mental development and spiritual upliftment as well as strengthening of moral value foundation. The craft is highlighted every year with the celebration of the "Kali-Kalihan" Harvest Festival where one can also observe various cultural and traditional activities of the people.

Good thing the Nice People Around are not that as active as it was in the 70's and the 80's.
They have not only opened another tourist destination for Negros Occidental, but also a shortcut going to the eastern coast of Negros. That cuts of the travel time from Bacolod to San Carlos in half. Making Visayan cities of Bacolod, Iloilo and Cebu more accessible to trade and transportation. (Although as of this moment, there are still continuing roadworks beyond DSB [if coming from BCD], and segments of rough road, especially that steep incline at the ridge of San Carlos City, but the road conditions are getting excellent).

@Smile: Is the new "pink" hotel ready for the Free Mason event come April 2008? Based on the pics, I guess its all systems go. Even the ground infrastructures like lamp posts, parking, and roadways are almost done. This can really boost Bacolod Pavilion's capacity to handle such big events in the future.:)

^^ Well, the basic reason why they placed the the fastcraft terminals in Muelle Loney is because it is a natural harbour suited for fastcraft docking. Also it has been the traditional area of Iloilo-Bacolod ferries since 1855. Anyway, we recognize the problem and with the privatization of the Iloilo River Wharf (Muelle Loney), hopefully it could serve better for tourists and passengers alike for both cities.

Thanks for the pics @derf. I quoted this pic in particular coz i think this should've been the REAL Masskara IMO. This is reminiscent of the glory days of Lopues(under Donna Porter) as a participant. How i wish Lopues will join this years masskara festivities. For me, their "butterfly costume" is still the best 'til this day. Tani ibalik nila this year. And also, I suggest they should STOP that locally recorded official dance theme. Its so mediocre. If they cant make a QUALITY music, then stop playing heroes. Mas maayo pa ang mga latin beat or the carribean sounds. Just my 2 cents.:)

Hosts getting ready
for PAL interclub
BY CEDELF TUPAS
The Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City and the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Murcia are bracing for the staging of what has been considered the biggest Philippine Airlines Interclub starting next week.
Close to 2,000 golfers from about 180 teams are coming to the city for the Feb. 21-March 1 tournament and officials from both clubs have expressed their readiness to host one of the most prestigious tournaments in the country. Marapara and Binitin also co-hosted the tournament in 2005.
The NOGCC has spruced up facilities to accommodate more people with the second floor of its clubhouse transformed into an air-conditioned function room. Its pro-shop was opened late last year.
"Probably those who have played here will think it's the same but they will be surprised to see what's in store for them," NOGCC president Epifanio Torre said.
NOGCC general manager Mark Gaston said the club is ready for the tournament.
The par-70 tree-lined layout designed by amateur legend Golem Silverio in 1962 is also being modified, providing a fresh challenge for golfers. Eight holes have been extended by 10 to 50 yards. Holes No. 3, 7, 15 have been stretched by at 15 yards. Twenty yards have also been added to the par-4 10, 11 and 17, while the par-4 6 will be stretched from 345 to 395 yards.
"All of this is part of our vision and mission to be a golf destination in Western Visayas . We want the club to be world-class," Gaston said.
Over at Binitin, the BGCC clubhouse has also been spruced up with capacity increased to 400-500 people from 150. It's a major undertaking that BGCC general manager Choi Ramos hopes will go a long way in their effort to make the province a prime golfing hub.
The new facility complements what Ramos calls a very interesting and golfer-friendly par-70 6,050 course. "We don't want to give visiting golfers a nightmare here," he said. But this doesn't mean that the course doesn't pose enough challenge for this year's Interclub stalwarts. While there was a significant increase in the length of the course at Marapara, Binitin's danger stems from its up-and-down and narrow layout.
Then, there's the new water hazard – an extension of the lake beside the eighth – on the par-3 eighth. And just behind the hilly portion of the par-4 283-yard 13 th, a two-meter drainage hazard lurks.
BGCC officers, led by president Rudy Montelibano, are leaving no stone unturned to ensure a smooth hosting of the tournament. Also helping out are VP Carlos Montelibano, Luigi Benedicto, Ricardo Gamboa, Ed Gasambelo, Bobby Herman and Leandro Montelibano.*CPT

By Rhea B. Peñaflor
Indeed, a long trip going to Hinoba-an is all worth the sacrifice when you get to see the magnificent scenery of the white sand beach and the islands surrounding it
City life can be stressful and taxing and one good way to release this complete (and most of the time, traumatic) exhaustion is by taking a breather and that means going out of town.

You can choose among Oceanjet, Seajet, Weesam ferries and RoRo (Roll on, Roll off transportation). RoRo is recommended if you go in a group and you want to bring a private vehicle going to Hinoba-an. RoRo transportation is available in Iloilo City terminal at P700 for one way fare. From Bacolod City, you can already drive to the destination of your choice, be it in Hinoba-an or somewhere else. The price for Oceanjet, Seajet and Weesam ferries is between P400-500 round trip.

Friends take a break at Happy Valley Resort
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2008/02/15/the.orange.house.jpg
Happy Valley's favorite, The Orange House
Indeed, a long trip going to Hinoba-an is all worth the sacrifice when you get to see the magnificent scenery of the white sand beach and the islands surrounding it. The place is a picturesque view where one will forget all his worries when he sees how beautiful and relaxing Happy Valley Resort is though somewhat far from civilization yet the resort is still preserved for its natural wealth.
Happy Valley Resort is a cozy place with a large space for tourists and guests. It has an atmosphere where one can really unwind and rest. The resort is best for family or friends who want to take a break from long day's work. It is also best for honeymooners because the place can be a romantic place for its quiet, solemn and calm ambiance. The rooms are affordable with prices ranging from P1, 000 per room with a bathroom and the whole house at P6, 000 with four beds and four bathrooms. The designs are sub-urban with a veranda outside each room. Also there is the appealing two-storey orange house which is best for family or group of friends who would want to be together in one big house. It can certainly be best to serve as honeymooner's nest.
Doña Dolores Bilbao Uy Bico, owner of Happy Valley Resort shares proudly that there are still existing rich natural habitat in Hinoba-an. There are sea creatures varying from saltwater fishes and flying fishes to "curacha" (this sea creature belongs to the crustacean family and can only be found in Zamboanga and Hinoba-an), sea turtles, occasional dolphins and whales. Also there are still the endangered animals which can be found in Hinoba-an like the spotted deers, wild cats, birds of prey, parrots and wild boars in mountain ranges.
Without doubt, coral reefs and wild life are among the tourist attractions in Hinoba-an. Local people's livelihood includes farming, fishing, quarrying and mining.
Hinoba-an is also well-known for its Ubong caves. There are three Ubong caves: one is by land, the other is by water and the last one is a cave with a big opening where there is a stairway to the upper cave and a grotto. Stalactites in the caves are still very much noticeable though the Ubong cave by land should be preserved because it seemed that there are visitors who vandalize the caves. There is no problem with the Ubong cave by water because it is impossible to vandalize when the only means to get inside the cave is by a small fishing boat. Sharp rocks inside the Ubong cave by water may cause abrasions and even accidents, so it is recommended for tourists and swimmers to take precautions when swimming and getting inside the cave.

Ubong Cave by water
http://www.thenewstoday.info/2008/02/15/ubong.cave.by.and.jpg
Ubong cave by land
Local people of Hinoba-an, visitors and tourists should also respect nature's work of art. The Ubong caves are among the many wonderful gifts to man and as such, the same must be taken cared of instead of destroying them by means of vandalism or any form of deliberate disrespect or disregard.
Leaving one's trash in these caves is an act of dishonor to Mother Nature. Hino-baan has a rich natural heritage which should be preserved because not all places still possess this kind of natural wealth.
Indeed, it is worth your time to visit Hinoba-an and savor nature's priceless yet fulfilling treasures.
*The writer wishes to thank Happy Valley Resort owner John Bilbao Uy Bicofor his hospitality and patience and who also served as our tour guide during our 3-day stay at the resort. Bacolod Ties up with MT Industry
Top officials of the medical transcription (MT) industry of the Philippines this week met with the local leaders in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector to discuss plans to bring thousands of jobs and opportunities for investments and technology transfer for Bacolod and Negros Occidental.
Myla Reyes, president of the Medical Transcription Industry Association of the Philippines, Inc. (MTIAPI), with several other officers, including the chair of the Talent Development Committee of MTIAPI, Evely Abat met with Bacolod Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, Chair of the Bacolod-Negros Occidental Federation for ICT (BNEFIT), Inc. together with several officers Monday at opening of e-Services Philippines Global Sourcing Conference and Exhibitions at the SMX Convention Center in Manila.
Batapa-Sigue, who is also vice chair of the Bacolod ICT Council was joined by Mary Tolentino, Chair, IT Schools Network of Negros Occ. (ITSNET), Inc. and secretary of BNEFIT, Teresa Villanueva, Manager of Lasaltech and officer of BNEFIT, Lea Gonzales of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Provincial Officer and Silay City Councilor Mike Maravilla.
MTIAPI officers present were Reyes, Mike Chua, Chay de la Cruz, Mayette Reyes, Colin Christie, president of Mx Secure and Brian Christie.
BNEFIT’ pointed out to MTIAPI its main objective which is to promote Bacolod as one of the new wave cities for outsourcing and offshore (O & O) industries, Batapa-Sigue said.
MTIAPI, an alliance MT companies and leaders in the country, serves as the main industry proponent in the advancement of the Philippine MT sector, Myla Reyes said.
MxSecure is committed to further its business in the Philippines, particularly to cities like Bacolod which has the requirements of manpower pool and reasonable cost of business, Colin Christie said.
Both parties agreed to conduct a series of comprehensive roadshows by March this year to introduce the opportunities in the MT industry to Negrenses, highlighting the industry linkages with local investors, government, private and business sector as well as the academe, students, parents and the general public, Abat said.
Through the roadshows, MTIAPI will be able to show Philippine MT Industry as growing and is alreday recognized by the US and that there is a career path to pursue in medical transcription.
There is a need to develop a good assessment tool to determine the quality of MT trainings already existing in the country so that the required labor pool is met, Tolentino said.
In response, MTIAPI intends to dialogue with the academe to integrate basic skills and knowledge in the general curriculum that will intensify student’s chances to competitively join the MT industry as a career.*

P114M hotel opens today
BY CARLA GOMEZ
A new hotel is opening in Bacolod City today with fully booked rooms in time for the Philippine Airlines Interclub golf tournament that is expected to draw close to 2,000 golfers to Negros Occidental.
The Planta Centro Bacolod Hotel and Residences at the corner of Araneta and Roxas streets, which cost about P114 million, is of Mediterranean style with a touch of classical architecture, its architect Ramiro Garcia said.
It will also provide 150 new jobs.
The hotel is owned by the Tanpinco and Montelibano families, also the owners of the Business Inn in Bacolod City , he said.
Its president and corporate chef is Benedict John Uy, while the hotel manager is Darrylin Sumalangcay and interior designer is Leo Almeria.
The hotel has 82 guest rooms, including six suites and a loft, fitted with wireless internet access.
It also has a business center, a fitness center and outdoor swimming pool, a 24-hour coffee shop, towers and an observatory, and 10 function rooms, one with a capacity for 350, and another that can open up to the courtyard and swimming pool area and accommodate about 700, Garcia said.
The 6,700 square meter hotel was built at P17,000 per square meter including furniture, he said.*CPG

NEDA okays 3 projects worth P5.5 B
The National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) board has approved three infrastructure projects worth P5.5 billion.
NEDA is headed by Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Augusto B. Santos, Director General.
These are the new Bacolod airport access road (Bacolod-Silay Road), the widening and improvement of Gapan-San Fernando-Olongapo (GSO) road, Phase II (Lubao, Pampanga-Dinalupihan, Bataan Section) and the Caticlan airport development project.
The P972-million New Bacolod airport access road project proposed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) intends to connect the said airport in Silay City to Bacolod City.
The access road has a total length of 10.12 kilometers. A two-lane road will be initially opened in 2011. It will be widened into a four-lane road by the end of 2018. Construction is expected to start by 2008. The project will be financed through national government funds.
On the other hand, the GSO road project also proposed by the DPWH aims to spur economic development in Central Luzon. Its improvement also aims to provide safety, convenience and faster travel for motorists coming from the project area to the various tourist and business destinations in Olongapo, Zambales and Bataan.
The project’s total cost is P2.06-billion of which P1.31 billion of the total project cost will be sourced from the Korean EDCF while P745.5 million will be the GOP counterpart. While the project was approved, NEDA board decided to defer its implementation and prioritize the completion of the ongoing locally-funded Lubao diversion road instead.
The unsolicited build-rehabilitate-operate-transfer (BROT) proposal for the Caticlan Airport Development Project was likewise approved by the Board. This involves the rehabilitation of the existing Caticlan airport to accommodate the increasing passenger traffic bound for Boracay Island and other tourist destinations in Region VI.
The project also aims to increase the capacity of the airport terminal for greater passenger traffic, accommodate regional flights and larger aircrafts and improve quality of service and passenger safety and security in the area.
The construction or rehabilitation of the P2.5-billion airport project is targeted to start this year. The Air Transportation Office (ATO) will manage the airport until 2010 while the Caticlan International Airport and Development Corporation (CIADC), who will finance the project, will take over its operation by 2011 to 2033.
