No worries, mga Migo! It's my pleasure to dessiminate interesting information like this because its about environment conservation and it's very important that others should know. Most of the people working in Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation are purely volunteers caring for our environment and i just want to do my small share.
Entrance fee is only P30.00.The area is not that big but surely you'll be fascinated with whats in there. You will find diffirent kinds of birds and other animals that faces extinction and which you might not have seen in your entire life and might never be again.
Negros Forest and Ecological Foundation is managed by a non-profit group and could be relying only on sponsors and donations in kind to feed and keep this animals stays forever.

PLANTA
A TOUCH OF THE MEDITERRANEAN IN THE CITY
When Planta Centro Bacolod Hotel and Residences opened on Friday, it also brought to the city the relaxing ambience of the Mediterranean combined with the elegance that the Negros culture is widely known for.
“Planta has a touch of classical architecture,” said Ramiro Garcia, former Bacolod City vice mayor, who designed most of the big hotels in Bacolod City , including Business Inn, the sister hotel of the new establishment. Planta, located along Araneta and Roxas Streets, was named after the ice plant, one of the business establishments of the owner-family, the Tanpincos. The Bacolod Ice and Storage Plant stood in the area for about 50 years prior to its relocation in Santo Niño.
The interiors reflect that touch of Negros culture. They're an expression of the elegance of yesteryears in Negros, said Quezon City-based interior designer Leo Almeria, who stressed that the leisurely life of Negrenses, has been his inspiration in coming up with “a simplified showcase of elegance”. Thus, Planta is establishing itself more of a family and leisure-oriented hotel, the interior designer said, unlike Business Inn, which is for business-minded individuals and groups.
But despite its classical design inspired by the Mediterranean mood, the 6,700-sq.m. hotel, which costs a little more than P114 million, has modern and state-of-the-art facilities. All rooms are fitted with a state of the art, keyless door, wireless Internet access, cable television, electronic safe, international and national direct dial phones, among others, said Assistant General Manager Fati de la Rama.
Garcia, at the press conference held at the hotel coffees shop on Thursday, said the choice of the Mediterranean mood was suggested by the members of the Tanpinco family, especially the ladies, who have been greatly impressed by the enduring and relaxing personality of this type of architecture and design. The soothing ambience is reflected, too, in our base colors of rust, gray and khaki, De La Rama added.
The ‘soft opening' of the hotel was done to accommodate part of the 2,000-plus golf players who are in town for the PAL Inter-Club, biggest inter-club tournament in the country. The hotel, which has already substantial bookings until May, will also host shortly a big group of American golfers. Its manager, Darrylin Sumalangcay also pointed out that function room reservations have already been reserved for December activities.
Among the attractions of the hotel is its food offerings, which are personally under the supervision of its president, John Benedict ‘BJ' T. Uy, who is also the corporate chef. The Plata president is a son of Jose Vicente ‘JV' Tanpinco, hotel general manager, who said the appointment of the hotel president, is part of the thrust to turn over the leadership in their business organizations to the younger generation. BJ just earned a diploma form the International School of Culinary arts and Hotel Management.
Tanpinco said the hotel has 82 guest rooms, including six suites a loft, which provide guests with a view of the city and the sea. It has 27 standard and another 27 deluxe rooms, four family standard and a family de luxe rooms. 16 superior rooms, a bridal suite, two superior sites and three residence suites.
Garcia said the hotel is also rushing the completion of a swimming pool designed with a lush courtyard landscape that may serve as an extension of one of Planta's 10 function rooms which can has accommodations ranging from a small group to 350 persons.
Assisting the officers of the hotel are events specialists Analyn Gellecanao, July Annn Jocson and Jade Medes.
The hotel also provides shuttle service to and from the New Bacolod Silay Airport , has a well-equipped fitness center and a 24-hour coffee shop serving local and international food.
Planta was designed for the comfort and convenience of every guest in mind, De La Rama stressed. AVDelCarmen

New Dreams, New Challenge
The appointment of Benedict John Uy as president of Planta, the newest hotel in Bacolod City , signals the infusion of the leadership of more young blood in the management of the Tanpinco family-owned businesses in Bacolod City .
Recently completing a course from the Intertional School of Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management, BJ, 29, accepted the challenge with this resolve – “to keep the company running and sustain it”. He also serves as hotel corporate chef, a position that was paved by his experience in “cooking as a relaxing activity”.
Running a big business was not really in his mind when he started and completed his Business Management course at St. La Salle. I thought someday I'll have my own business but not one as big as this, especially in the business industry, he said, adding that when he was small, he dreamed of becoming a “good basketball player”.
BJ is the second of the four children of Jose Vicente Tanpinco, the Planta general manager, and wife, the former Belindo Co Uy. The eldest son, Benjamin, is in auto supply business, while the third child, Bea, has a marketing degree, also from USLS, and assists in the ice plant business. The youngest, Barnard, is studying entrepreneurial management at the University of Asia and the Pacific.
Assisting him in running the hotel is Manager Darrylin Patrimonio-Sumalangcay, also a Business Management graduate of St. La Salle, who worked for 10 years at Business Inn, starting from a cashier's position and moving up later as front office supervisor, account sales executive, association account and sales executive and eventually as assistant manager prior to her new position.
“This is not only an opportunity to advance my career,” she said, “ but most importantly the position provides me with a new challenge and responsibility toward my development as a person and a professional.
BJ, while assuming a modest ‘let's-wait-and-see attitude, said that with the young talents in the hotel, and their new dreams and new ways of thinking, he hopes that they can respond to the call and prove that we can do things very well.”

^^ The trend in the global economy is the infusion of fresh ideas and fresh talents into mainstream business. Thats why the Tanpincos are just setting that trend in Bacolod/Negros. With the number of BPO's and other ICT companies investing in Bacolod, i guess the city's business leaders are just on the right track. Kudos!

Thats why, we just cant ignore these talents and skills to incorporate into today's business scenes. The festivals, natural wonders and new investments, are just some of the key factors which make Bacolod nowadays a true boom city.:)

Plush New Hotel in Bacolod Opens
By Edgar Cadagat
A plush new hotel, the Planta Centro Bacolod Hotels and Residences, held a soft opening in Bacolod City Thursday, as it opens its doors to foreign and local guests, which it immediately booked for several weeks’ stay.
Architect Ramiro ‘Chick’ Garcia, a former vice-mayor of Bacolod, said the hotel consists of 82 guest rooms, including six suites and a loft which it showed to Bacolod media in a 30-minute tour. Including the courtyard which comes with a swimming pool, the hotel boasts of 11 function rooms, the more spacious of which was designed to accommodate several hundred people for a large conference or a convention.
Five of its fairly large suites can accommodate a family of three each while a bridal suite can accommodate newly-weds, the residence allows one to have a clear view of the city’s environs in its west portion looking on to the sea.
Planta Hotel has special guest room features, a business center and recreational facilities consisting of a fitness center and an outdoor swimming pool.
The estimated P114 M hotel sits on a 6,700 sqm lot area once occupied by the Tanpinco family-owned ice plant which practically supplied the ice needs of many establishments in the city.
The brochure touts the spanking hotel rooms fitted with a state-of-the-art keyless door, wireless internet access, cable TV, electronic safe, IDD/NDD phone, hot and cold shower and other amenities which it says were designed with every guest in mind. The Planta Hotel is located on the city’s downtown fringes, on its main thoroughfare, Araneta St. and which is a mere five-minute walk to a mall complex.
A sister hotel of the now well-known Business Inn Hotel, the Planta is managed by Benedict John T. Uy, president and Corporate Chief, Darrylin Sumalangcay, hotel manager, Analyn Gellecanao, event specialist July Ann Jocson, another of its event specialist and still another one, event specialist Jade Medes. The corporation is owned by the Tanpinco and Montelibano families.
In an interview, one of the owners, JV Tanpinco said they feel there is room for several more hotels including Planta Centro in Bacolod City. In fact, they have a two-week booking from local and foreign tourists, all golfers who will compete during the 61st PAL Interclub Golf Tournament in Bacolod City and in Binitin Murcia, Negros Occ. The said tournament goes underway on Feb. 21 to Mar 1, 2008.
Journalists noted the feel-food ambience of Planta Centro and with its many function rooms, could well serve as venue for press conferences and the like.*

FOR EXPANSION, ETHANOL VENTURE
RHI obtains
additional P2-B loan
Sugar conglomerate Roxas Holdings Inc., which owns Central Azucarera de La Carlota Inc., said it has obtained an additional P2 billion-loan facility from two banks to fund its capacity expansion and the ethanol production venture.
The new loan from Bank of the Philippine Islands and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. will complete the P5.8-billion capital it requires to pursue the two projects, the company said in its latest disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange.
The company acquired P1 billion from BPI, P500 million by RCBC, and another P500 million by BPI Asset Management and Trust Group.
RHI said it secured the loan facilities together with its sugar units Central Azucarera Don Pedro Inc. in Batangas and Central Azucarera de La Carlota Inc. in Negros Occidental.
Previously, RHI, with CADPI and CACI also obtained a P4.7 billion-loan facility from Banco De Oro-EPCI Bank Inc. to fund the expansion of its sugar milling and refining subsidiaries to boost its revenue-generating capability and enhance its cost-competitiveness.
The company's total loan facilities from BDO, BPI and RCBC total P6.7 billion.
We would need only about P5.1 billion and we are grateful for the respective contingencies granted by the three institutions which is a clearly testimony to their confidence in our company, said Asuncion Aguilar, RHI senior vice president for finance and treasurer.
Aguilar said they are preparing for the entry of low-priced imported sugar that will enter the country in 2010 under the Association of Southeast Nations Free Trade Agreement.
She said the P4.7 billion will be allocated for the purchase of factory equipment from two sugar mills in the United States and in Australia . The P1.2 billion will be used to set up an ethanol plant while the rest to refinance existing debts.*NLG

Nietes stakes title in Dubai
BY CEDELF TUPAS
Negrense world boxing champion Donnie Nietes will risk his World Boxing Organization minimum weight crown against mandatory challenger Daniel Reyes of Colombia on April 18 in Dubai .
This was confirmed to the DAILY STAR by Nietes' promoter, Michael Aldeguer, who was among the guests during the Philippine Sportswriters' Association awards Saturday night.
Nietes of Bacolod City and Murcia town, Negros Occidental was also an awardee along with fellow Negrense world champion Gerry Peñalosa of San Carlos City .
Michael Aldeguer said they are grooming Nietes to have big-time fights in the United States should he dispose the 35-year-old Reyes, who holds a record of 39 wins (30 KOs , 5-losses and 1-draw).
The fight card will be headlined by the world flyweight title fight between Filipino world champion Nonito Donaire Jr. and Australian foe Hussein Hussein.
Boxing website www.boxrec.com said the Reyes-Nietes fight is still subject to the approval of the WBO, although Aldeguer said that the bout is already a done deal.
Nietes will be training at the gym of Antonio Aldeguer in Cebu in preparation for his first title defense since winning the title over Thailand's Sor Vorapin in Cebu City in September last year.
"He (Reyes) is strong but I will be ready for the fight," Nietes said.
Reyes is coming off a unanimous decision win over compatriot John Alberto Molina in Aug. 18, 2007 in Cartagena , Colombia . Prior to that fight, he bowed to Giovanni Segura by knockout in June 8, 2007 in Indiana .
There had been talks that Nietes' first defense will be held in Bacolod early this year but with Aldeguer's announcement, a fight during the first quarter of 2008 in Bacolod is already far-fetched.*CPT

you may visit lagoon as what kyle said. let it be your first stop, next will be Bacolod Public Plaza. You'll find Bacolod cathedral and SM city around that area. If you wanna go gimik, goldenfields and Lacson Street are the places that can offer wonderful night spots like bars and restos. You may also try east block. its not difficult to roam around the City, all you need is to ask people in tagalog or english if you dont know how to speak ilonggo, you may also take a cab. If ever you wanna buy pasalubong, try something different...side from piaya, we have goodies here called napoleones of rolis and half moon of pendys. try to visit carmelite monastery...Bacolod is just a small place...everything is cheap. hehehe

The Philippine Airlines Interclub takes centerstage beginning today with the seniors' division teeing off at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin , Murcia and the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Bacolod City .
A total of 82 teams are competing in four categories --- championship, founders, sportswriters and friendship.
The Canlubang Sugar Barons are gunning for a third consecutive title in the championship division, where the NOGCC squad, which placed fifth in Cagayan De Oro City last year is expected to do better this time owing to its home-course advantage.
Statistics-wise, Canlubang may be headed for another encore owing to its 97.6 scoring average in the past five years. Luisita, which boasts of three of the finest Negrense players, is in second with a 90.4 average.
Marapara, which last won the men's regular crown in 1976, lies in sixth with an 89.
Playing for NOGCC are Luis Coscolluela, Ernesto "Boy" Piccio, Dave Infante, Epifanio "Panyo" Torre, Lito Ong, Ed Anglo Boy Manaloto and Rene Silos.
Each team will parade four players a day with the best three scores to count. Coscolluela, Piccio, Anglo and Ong will open the Marapara bid in Binitin today, while the rest of the team sees action on Friday.
Former national amateur champion Francis Gaston heads the Negrense crew in Luisita. Former Silay City mayor Carlo Gamban and Philippine Sports commissioner Ricardo Garcia are also playing for the Tarlac-based contingent.
The three Negrenses are expected to spearhead Luisita --- a 13-time seniors division champion --- because of their familiarity of the two par-70 courses.
But the Sugar Barons, led by Tommy Manotoc and Rolly Viray, remain the heavy favorite and was even bolstered by the acquisition of former Putra Cup champion Dave Hernandez.
The BGCC is also seeing action in the sportswriters division, where it has the best scoring average of 80.2.
The first two days of the championship division and friendship division will be played at Binitin, simultaneous with the founders and sportswriters division tournament at Marapara. The tournaments change venues on the final two days of the competition.
Hitting the ceremonial drives at the NOGCC yesterday were Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia, PAL president Jaime J. Bautista and NOGCC president Epifanio Torre.
The men's tournament follows from Wednesday to Saturday with Canlubang expected to be challenged again by Manila Southwoods, Del Monte and Negros Occidental.
Among those present at the NOGCC yesterday was former Comelec chairman Benjamin Abalos, at the center of the aborted ZTE-broadband scandal for allegedly asking a $130 million commission. Abalos is the top player of Wack Wack, one of the heavily-favored teams in founders division.
The 61st PAL Interclub, dubbed “Sugar and Tee,” marks the fourth time since 1997 that Binitin and Marapara hosted the tournament.
This year's competition is backed by platinum sponsors Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, GE Aviation, MTV Philippines and Solar Sports. The major sponsors are Action Asia, Business Mirror, Crossover, Pacsports and Royal Caribbean. Fortune Tobacco, GECAS, MasterCard, People Asia and RMN are the corporate sponsors, while Bombo Radyo, Callaway Golf, Century Park Hotel, Lufthansa Technik and Patio Pacific Boracay are the minor sponsors.*CPT

maybe my siblings and me must go to BACOLOD'S TOP TEN SITES. i cant decide if historically or shoppingwise. you suggest.
I also suggest both. If you want to experience the Negrense culture, you should visit the Museum(but if that's too cliche for you then you really don't need to go there) but there's also Balay Negrense, an old ancestral house in Silay. If you want good food, then there are a lot of choices :) By the way, how long are you planning to visit?

National food summit set April 4
The Department of Agriculture will hold a National Food Summit on April 4 to tackle the country’s farm sector growth by harmonizing the national government’s food sufficiency program with those of the local government units and private sector stakeholders, the DA said in a press release.
Secretary Arthur Yap said in the press release that through the food summit, the DA sees to synchronized efforts pertaining to raising farm yields, attracting investments and creating jobs in the countryside, and stabilizing the supply and prices of basic foodstuff.
Part of the national food summit is the series of area-wide consultations this month until March with multi-sectoral stakeholders.
Central areas of concern of the summit participants include five commodity clusters, namely, rice, corn, high-value commercial crops, livestock and poultry, and fisheries and aquaculture, the press release said.
The action plans will complement the DA’s five-pillar program that focuses on higher spending on irrigation and rural infrastructure, on post harvest facilities, and on research and development or R&D and extension work; relaxing the rural credit pinch; and opening more local and foreign markets for Philippine products, the press release also said.
The food summit will be participated in by members of Congress and representatives of government agencies like the National Economic and Development Authority, Department of Agrarian Reform, Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Department of Science and Technology, the DA regional field units and LGUs.
The DA will also invite representatives of farmers and fishers organizations, industry and professional associations, sectoral groups like consumers and transport organizations, academe and regional development councils, the press release added.*

2 congressional seats
pushed for Bacolod
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
A resolution requesting the House of Representatives to consider the possibility of dividing the political territorial subdivision of Bacolod City into two congressional seats or districts was passed by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod Wednesday.
Proposed by Councilors Alex Paglumotan, Dindo Ramos, Al Victor Espino, Homer Bais, Greg Gasataya and Roberto Rojas, the resolution said Bacolod City, as a highly urbanized city, is one of the biggest political territory outside Metro Manila with a population of about half a million and with a voting population of 289,000 based on the 2007 records of the COMELEC.
Paglumotan said Zamboanga has a population of only 300,000 but it has two congressional seats.
“This is not for political reasons because I have no intention to run for congressman,” he said. He said he believes having two congressional seats in the House of Representatives would be advantageous to Bacolod City and to the best interest of its constituents.
Paglumotan said this would mean having a bigger budget for the city for the enhancement of public service and the delivery of basic services.
The resolution asked the House of Representatives through its appropriate committees to consider a possible study or evaluation of the status of Bacolod City as having two congressional seats in the House.
Copies of the resolution will be furnished the Secretary of the House of Representatives and newly-installed House Speaker Davao Rep. Prospero Nograles.
The SP also passed a resolution requiring the City Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Management Council to submit to the Office of the Mayor and the City Agriculture Office its comprehensive program, as a recommendatory body to the city government.
It also passed a resolution strongly supporting the move of the national government in phasing out incandescent bulbs to cut greenhouse gas emissions and save on electricity by encouraging all households and establishments in Bacolod City to avoid or reduce the use of these bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps.
The resolution, authored by Councilors Jocelle Batapa-Sigue and Wilson Gamboa Jr., also requests the national government, through President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, to integrate Bacolod City in the programs and projects undertaken by the Asian Development Bank loan to help fund a range of program on energy efficiency.
This includes pilot programs that could be continued as long-term development projects and the provision of compact fluorescent lamps to low-income families to mitigate the impact of the change from incandescent lighting.*CGS

Provincial Jail transfer to BJMP underway
TALKS between the regional officials of the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) and the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental for the transfer of jurisdiction and management of the provincial jail to local BJMP started Thursday.
BJMP District Warden Samson Abaygar said Regional Director Romeo S. Vio and other national officers visited his office Thursday to give a courtesy call to Governor Joseph Maranon at the provincial capitol.
Post here your Valentine's Day greetings
He said they presented the proposal to the governor.
"I personally favor the move because all jails should really be under the management of BJMP," Abaygar said. He added the proposal is first here in the entire country.
They are studying the legal, financial and administrative aspects of the proposal, among other things, that will be drafted in the memorandum of agreement.

Bacolod Boxing 2 set March 15 at Casino Filipino
IT WILL be another night of exciting professional boxing when "Bacolod Boxing 2", presented once again by Bugal sang Bacolodnon Boxing Promotions headed by Monico "Nicky" Puentevella, Jr., gets staged starting 6:00 p.m. at the Casino Filipino Bacolod.
This was confirmed to Sun.Star Bacolod by Games and Amusements Board (GAB) commissioner and former Bacolod City councilor Juan Ramon "Monju" Guanzon who is also president of the Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA).
Guanzon earlier said it might be Mark Gil Melligen of Barangay Pahanocoy again or another Bacolod pug who will topbill the March 15 card. In any case it will still be a Bacolodnon who is under the care of Cebu-based Negrense promoter Antonio "Bidoy" Aldeguer of the renowned ALA gym and stable who will headline the promotion.
He will be supported by the three other Bacolod pro boxers who also fought last January 26 during the inaugural Bacolod Boxing promotion.
Merlito Sabillo of Handumanan and Nelson Arellano of Barangay 35 will be facing different opponents while Roy Sumugat of Mansilingan and Leonardo Guardiano of Alijis will have a return bout against their previous opponents.
In addition, standouts of the 1st Monico Golden Gloves Inter-Barangay Amateur Boxing Tournament will be featured in supporting amateur bouts during the March 15 promotion which is again open to the public through the main sponsorship of Pagcor Casino Filipino, Ginebra San Miguel and Aldrich Corporation, among others.
Melligen posted a unanimous decision win over Carlo Magale of Bohol during the January 26 eight-round main event while Sabillo posted a points win over Powell Balaba of Tagbilaran City and Arellano survived Alberto Simbajon also of Tagbilaran.
According to GAB consultant and NABA treasurer Vic Tan NABA has a standing agreement with ALA where promising Negrense amateur standouts who want to turn pro are brought to Cebu to train under ALA coaches and eventually managed by Aldeguer as part of the association's boxing development program. CanGolf Only Three Up in PAL Golf
Canlubang Golf and Country Club played without its usual spark as it played the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin, Murcia with a collective 145 points.
And yet, the sweet swingers from Laguna are still on track in their unprecedented bid to sweep the major team crowns three straight times in the annual PAL Inter-Club tournament.
To reiterate Cangolf’s so-so start, team owner Luigi Yulo emerged as the sugar Baron’s top player with a three over 73.
In the PAL Inter-Club scoring system that gives one point for a double bogey, two bogey, three par and so on, Yulo’s output was worth 51 followed by Tommy Manotoc’s 48 points and 46 of Baxo Adriano.
Rolly Viray’s 45 did not count but the Sugar Baron’s 145 gave them a precarious three-point lead over surprisingly consistent Manila Golf and Country Club and six up on fierce rival Luisita Golf and Country Club.
Completing the top 10 are Ayala Alabang Country Club 135, Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club, the event’s other host this year, 128, Chamorro Golf Club 127, Fil-Cansa Golf Club 105 and San Francisco Peninsula 96.
Yulo admitted that he and his troop played way below their usual performance. But they are not complaining.
Said Yulo: “ What’s important was that we are up, as usual.” Said Manotoc: “ We did not play our usual consistency, but it’s still nice to be on top.” Said Viray: “ The next three days will be crucial.”
“ If we keep this up, it would be nice for Cangolf to capture the major team crowns thrice in a row in the seniors and men’s regular divisions. It first won in Davao City the other year and repeated at Cagayan De Oro and Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon last year.”
Luisita swept the major crowns in 1992-93, but lost the following year.
“Not only that,” Manotoc said. “Iggy Clavecilla had a bum stomach and his absence contributed to Luisita’s poor round. “ But with Iggy and Francis Gaston playing tomorrow, don’t count Luisita out.”
Over at the par 70 Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club course here, Orchard Golf and Country Club combined with 138 points on Rene Unson’s 49, Joe Gonzales 45 and the 44 of Philip Gahol, Jr. to take the early lead in the Founder’s division.
Cebu Country Club made 130 to take the second place while Camp John Hay Golf and Country Club and Valley Golf and Country Club for the next slot at 126 while the next slot with 125 went to the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club.
Also at NOGCC, Eagle Ridge Golf and Country Club carded 123 on the 41s of Peping Nepomuceno, Si Kun Ryoo and Mario Lugay to power their team to the early lead in the Sportswriters division.
Second was Philippine Navy with 122, Camp Evangelista Golf Club 120, Riviera Golf and Country Club 117 and Alta Vista of Cebu 111.
The Senior’s competitions involving 73 teams in the championship, Sportswriters, Friendship and Founders are limited to players who are 55 years old and older. The format calls for each team to field our players each round, but only the best three scorers will count.
In the tournament with Airbus, Boeing, Bombardier, GE Solar Sports and MTV Philipines as platinum sponsors and Action Asia, PACSPORTS, Business Mirror, 105 Crossover and Royal Caribbean as major backers.
Corporate sponsors of the event launched in 1948 to provide additional golfing activities for PAL clientele are Fortune Tobacco, Radio Mindanao Network and People Asia.
Other backers are Callaway Golf, Lufthansa Technik, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company and Pan Pacific Hotel.*

Silay mayor: 'We like Bacolod as it is'
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
FEELING the 'bustling' of investment offers and the 'earth moving' after the Bacolod-Silay Airport had been opened, City Mayor of Silay Jose "Oti" Montelibano publicly declared Thursday that a monthly planning session will be held to continuously update their City Development Plan.
The plan, Montelibano stressed, must be both attraction and accommodation of investors. "They come individually and as groups and in all categories. They are now here, apparently choosing Silay instead of Bacolod."
Montelibano candidly remarked, "If this so, then we like Bacolod City to remain as it is so that investors will come."
Counting some 60 to 70 participants at the scenic Sunburst Bay Resort, Montelibano said, "Silay must be competitive and that a serious infrastructure plan must be put in place both to attract and accommodate investors."
Among the infrastructure supports that Montelibano presented are road networks, flyovers and an international seaport.
"Surveys had already been conducted in Balaring and the sea depth is very ideal, much better than the coasts of Bacolod City," Montelibano said.
Having 12,000- hectares of agricultural land, Montelibano added that Silay would go ahead with the plan of Governor Marañon to construct the irrigation highway.
"Silay has the best water system in the province and the Malogo River can be dam and E.B. Magalona will benefit from this irrigation system," he added.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Von Einsiedel, a professional urban planner and Chief Operating Officer of Concep, Inc., proposed certain principles for Silay to follow.
Starting with 'Self-Awareness,' Einsiedil stressed that Silaynons should be the first one to know that many of the Negrense cuisine are manufactured in Silay.
"Bacolod for example pride itself of it 'infocenters,' but if traffic systems becomes terrible, then investors will likely transfer to other places. Silay must be careful with such problems," Einsiedil warned.
Economist and consultant to the Asian Development Bank for Local Economic Development Jose Antonio League said as he was reading the draft plan of Silay, it is even better than how Makati started under Mayor Jejomar Binay.
"Montelibano is not just particular with infrastructures but even locational programs. The plan was clear as to where it starts, what is in between the airport to the river, what is in the river, and so on. This is what we call locational programming," League said.
Einsiedel and League are both consultants to the Silay Development Plan.

^^ Silay would prosper, it was the Montelibanos who actually laid out the urban planning of Bacolod , and Mayor Leonardia himself is a protege of the recently deceased Mayor Alfredo Montelibano Jr....regardless whatever developments these two city would get, they'll end up complementing each other anyways.....

^^ Hopefuly they could make a bypass for the national highway to bypass downtown Silay in order for the heritage structures to be kept preserved. I think this was also Dinky's (Von Einsidel) plan for Silay City. His wife is a Silaynon. :)
kyle@1008
February 22nd, 2008, 03:51 PM
^^ they won't do anything to harm those heritage structures,..silaynons are known for their love of culture, and the people who protested against the destruction of the heritage houses during the late 1960's to make way for the silay-talisay highway are still alive and well
habagatcentral1
February 22nd, 2008, 04:00 PM
^^ But its better if they divert the national highway out of the heritage downtown itself because of the effects of pollution to the edifices.

Jocelle Batapa-Sigue’s ‘Eco-Zone’
Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue may be a voice in the wilderness when she batted for the declaration by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the old airport as an economic zone.
That proposal has earned kudos from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) regional director Gil Altura. He is also chair of the RDC and Regional secretary of Western Visayas. Just imagine the bonanza the eco-zone will earn for Bacolod. Compare it to the P15 million the city government will be spending for maintaining it as a commercial alternate airport, a prospect that seems dim. Despite the media hype on the DOTC having organized a task force to sit down with city officials.
Just imagine how much the city could earn in terms of real estate taxes alone when investors buy lands from the old airport. And the amount of taxes that will be generated by corporations putting up their businesses there.
That could be a swinging place also. And bars and refreshment establishments will be churning out millions in taxes for the city.
Well, that’s something that deserves to be supported by Bacolodnons who want the city government to earn more to spend for social services.
But then, politics may still torpedo that, which could be the most sensible approach to the problem posed by the old airport.:cheers:

PLDT, SMART affirm
dominance in Bacolod
OPEN FIRST JOINT FACILITY IN VISAYAS
http://www.visayandailystar.com/2008/February/23/businessnews1.htm
Affirming their dominance in providing both landline and wireless services, Philippine Long Distance Co. and its wholly-owned subsidiary Smart Communications Inc. opens today their first joint facility in the Visayas, the PLDT-Smart Business Center at SM City Bacolod.
The one-stop retail outlet, situated at the ground floor of the mall’s South Wing, will provide sales and after sales services for customers of both companies.
At a press conference yesterday, Cesar Enriquez, first vice president for customer services of PLDT, said PLDT covers 72 percent of the landline users in Bacolod City, while nationwide, their subscriber base is 65 percent to 75 percent.
Bacolod is among the fast-moving cities outside Metro Manila and Cebu, he said.
Ramon Isberto, public affairs head of Smart, said Smart and Talk ‘n Text also have a substantial number of subscribers in Negros Island, higher than their competitors.
Isberto said the opening of the joint business center is part of their efforts to make the services of both PLDT and Smart accessible to their customers.
Renato Santillan, PLDT Bacolod business zone head, said their customers in Negros can pay their telephone bills or inquire about PLDT products and services at the business center without leaving the comforts of the mall.
Joy Sanchez, Smart Bacolod customer care head, said their goal is to make life more convenient for their subscribers who can settle their bill, whether in cash or in check, through an automated machine called Payment Connect, and charge their mobile phones at the Charging Station.
Other company officials who came to the press conference at the Sugarland Hotel yesterday were Jesus Tañedo, PLDT vice president for operations, VisMin; Alex Ang, PLDT regional head, Retail Sales; Evelyn del Rosario, PLDT community relations head; and Maria Jane Paredes, Smart public affairs manager, VisMin.*NL

Wakeboard event on
BY CEDELF TUPAS
Wakeboarding – an event most only see on cable television – makes its debut in Bacolod with the staging of the first Bacolod Wakeboard and Wakeskate Winch Jam at the East Block parking lot in Bacolod City starting today.
The event marks the first time the extreme sport is also held in the Visayas, Manfred Ruiz of StokedInc, which is sending three riders to conduct a demonstration and clinic during the two-day event.
At a press conference Thursday night, Ruiz said wakeboarding is growing in the country, pointing out that events are being held in Manila and other neighboring provinces.
A 200 ft makeshift pool has been constructed, while a power winch has also been installed. When similar events are held at lakes, boats are used to pull enthusiasts, Ruiz said.
"We are actually bringing the event into the city," said Ruiz, whose teammates, Carlo Dela Torre and Jemir Blanco are also participating in the winch jam.
Ruiz admitted that wakeboarding can be an expensive sport but with the sport being promoted and facilities being constructed, it will not take long before the country produces champions in international competitions.
In fact, Ruiz said that despite little exposure, some Filipino riders came up with noteworthy finishes in the Singapore waterfest last year.*CPT

Hire local workers,SP ask contractors
An ordinance requiring all vertical and horizontal contractors to hire some of their work force from the barangay where their constructions are situated was approved by the Bacolod Sangguninag Panlungsod for second reading Wednesday.
Authored by Councilor Catalino Alisbo, the ordinance also provides that these contractors, either funded by the government or private funds, should pay construction clearance fees to the barangay treasury of P100 for residential structures, P300 for semi-commercial and P500 for commercial establishments.
The ordinance said there is a need to promote local employment work force by requiring vertical and horizontal contractors or owners of structures being built to give priority to barangay residents who are qualified to work as construction workers.
It said the enactment of this ordinance will encourage the barangay and the city Public Employment and Services Office to conduct manpower training and pooling of its skilled and unskilled workers for future employment as construction work force.
Violators will be imposed penalties of P500 for the first offense and P1,000 for the second offense.*CGS

Tourism Players Wow Bacolod TravelXchange
“It’s a one-stop shop if you want to go somewhere,” said Sunshine Suelto, marketing officer for the local Casino Filipino, about the TravelXchange 2008 at Robinsons Place Bacolod .
Looking around, one could see she was right.
The twenty booths featuring hotels, DOT regional offices, a global travel distribution system, a travel accessories chain, cruises, travel agencies and resorts from Malaysia , Cebu, Caraga Region, Northern Mindanao, Subic, Bohol and Bacolod truly comprise a veritable feast for the regular “laskwatserong taga-Bacolod’s” heart.
“That’s good because Bacolod travelers like going to neighboring islands, and with TravelXchange, they become more aware of what’s available out there,” said Suelto.
Held on February 1 to 3, the three-day travel fair began with a bang as personalities like Negros Occidental Vice Governor Isidro Zayco and Bacolod City Vice Mayor Thaddeus Jude Sayson graced the occasion. The Department of Tourism likewise was represented by Regional Director Edwin Trompeta and DOT X Regional Director Butch Chan III.
Moreover, Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano, Board Member Edgar Acuña, Provincial Tourism Officer Jennylind Cordero, and Bacolod City Councilor Homer Bais were among the local VIPs during the opening program, which rightfully ended with an energetic Masskara dance.
On its 3rd year, the TravelXchange geared into full force as they enticed mall-goers with daily afternoon programs showcasing local dance and vocal talents, especially the very talented kids from Beng Sendico’s dance school and those produced by Sikat TV’s Radjie Caram like hosts Jess Andal and Carrie Mendoza. They, as well as more travel fair participants from outside Central Visayas , drew thousands to Robinsons Place.
Supported by the Department of Tourism, PAGCOR, City of Bacolod , Office of the Governor, Robinsons Place , Cebu Pacific and Skal International, with Panay News and Sikat TV as its media partners, the fair also introduced the local Bacolod favorite Mang Inasal and delicious cuisine of Hongkong Kitchen at Robinsons Place to its visitors from various cities in the Philippines .
We still have to wait and see what the 4th TravelXchange 2009 will bring. But with the outstanding support from Bacolodnons and key players in the hospitality and tourism industry, next year’s fair will certainly be bigger and better.*

888 CHINATOWN SQUARE
Bringing the ‘Tiangge’ to the Mall
By Allen V. Del Carmen FEATURES
Businessman William Ong can still vividly picture Bacolod during his boyhood days. “Traffic was very light and Negros was rich as the sugar industry was booming,” he recalls. Those were the days when, as a boy and the eldest of the seven children of Ong Hong Tee and wife, Siok Hian, his father was already exposing him to the discipline and rigors of business. His father traces his roots to China’s southeastern province of Fukien. As early as the grade school, he says, he was already helping in the business of his father, the American Shoe Emporium, which continues to operate with several branches in the city today.
But as a young man, he was a dreamer, too, and, after spending his basic education at St. John’s Institute, La Consolacion College and Tay Tung High School, he decided to study in Manila. The pull of adventure brought him to the University of the East where he studied Business Management. At the same time, he worked in his grandfather’s grocery business in Divisoria.
His stay in Manila was, however, cut short after two years of studies as his father wanted him to return to Bacolod to help run the family shoe sales business. A couple of years later, he had to make a crucial decision – to continue spending his time in the shoe emporium business or to return to Manila to help his Hong Kong-based uncle run the establishment he was planning to set up in Manila. Ong chose to help his uncle and was soon in Hong Kong where he trained for three months 1972 so he could take care of his uncle’s business – exporting to the Philippines jewelry-making equipment.
The opportunity eventually paved the way for the then young businessman to start his own venture, later expanding to the sales of dental equipment and supplies that, today, his own firm, Intercast, or Internaitonal casting, eventually grew to become one of the industry leaders in the country.
After almost 40 years of living in Metro Manila, Ong said he got bored with life in the metropolis that he decided to retire and looked at the opportunity of coming home to Bacolod that in 2004, he constructed his home in Ayala, which provided him an opportunity to renew ties with family members, friends and former classmates. His children, he adds, has taken over the management of his family business in Metro Manila.
In his frequent trips home during the past few years, he realized that many lots in the city have remained idle. Inquiring on the vacant lot owned by the Provincial Government along Gatuslao Street, which was just cleared of squatters, he found out it was offered for sale but, knowing the big amount required for the acquisition, he ventured into checking whether the land could be leased.
Today, after a little more than a year since the start of the construction, 888 Chinatown Square of the Bacolod Capitol Hill Land Development Corporation, where Ong sits as president and chief executive officer, is ready to serve the needs of Negrenses and Bacolod residents “who want to get the best value for their money”. The square, the name of which was influenced by the number, 8, considered in Chinese numerology as a lucky figure because of its infinity in design, will hold its soft opening on Friday this week. The establishment which cost a little more than P100 million, is a ‘tiangge’ type of mall, Ong said, is similar to Manila 168 and Divisoria, which are booming initiatives in the Metro Manila.
Ong said he is realizing the dream of bringing to Bacolod a type of mall which will cater to the variety of options of buyers at very low prices.
He said he learned that because of the operations of these tiangge types of business, operations and income of giant malls in metro Manila declined because “consumers will always prefer goods with greater value at a lesser cost. Buyers want to stretch the value of every peso spent, he recounts as telling 888 tenants during a briefing last week.
With these observations, he added, he and his four business associates decided to build 888 “to provide a wise shopping alternative and also a rare business opportunity for small and medium entrepreneurs, those who cannot afford the lease rates of big malls to start their own business all in one place”. At 888, he added, entrepreneurs can rent space as low as between P4,000 and P5,000 a month, or about P150 a day.
He believes that 888 will provide employment to thousands of Negrenses through its more than 200 stalls. The square, constructed by H.E.O, a Metro Manila-based company, has four main sections – food court and restaurant, a wet market, supermarket and general merchandise stores.
Ong, who headed the 2008 BacoLaodiat Festival, also took the opportunity to thank those who helped make the celebration a success on its third year, adding he is very happy of the encouraging outcome of this year’s four-day commemoration. This early, he further says, we’re planning for next year’s festival as he expressed hopes that the momentum of public interest and support will be sustained and promised to provide bigger attractions in future celebrations.
A civic minded business executive, Ong finds time to work with organizations, like Amity, the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Lions. He is also vice president of the Ong Family Association and is active in Buddhist Temple activities and organizations.
He lets out a big laugh when asked how he spends his time off business concerns, saying : “I play golf, watch television and play cards.”
Asked why he decided to start his big business in Bacolod instead of Metro Manila or other places, Ong said: “Bacolod is ready for this kind of business and we’re optimistic of its appeal on the people,” Ong said, emphasizing: “This is an opportunity to pay back the city and place that nurtured you.”

For me, this is the best part of his inspirational rhetorics. WE should all contribute to the local economy of Bacolod/Negros Occ. I noticed before, esp. Bacolod peeps, they find it cool to shop to other cities and bring back home the goods. Even brag about it. Thats a lame thing actually. You only make other city's economy grow and their market expanding. While you make your own place stagnant, if not, growing in a slow pace. I salute Mr. W. Ong for this. He can be adjudged one of our modern day adventurers and maybe a hero on his own right.:cheers:

‘Kabalikat’ partners launch second farmers training
The second batch of farmers training under the “Kabalikat sa Kabuhayan” Project for backyard vegetable growing of the Shoe Mart Foundation, Negros Economic Development Foundation and Harbest Agribusiness Corp., was launched Friday at a demo farm in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City.
In May, the project partners also tapped about 100 farmers in Negros Occidental to undergo a weekly hands-on training in organic farming from May to August.
The farmers were sponsored by the SM Foundation, together with NEDF that provided a 5,000-square meter land for the training. Harbest Agribusiness, headed by its president Arsenio Barcelona, invited agriculturists to conduct the trainings.
The project ended with a Harvest Festival at SM City Bacolod in August last year.*NLG

Tiangge-type mall
opens in Bacolod
Calling their mall the “Divisoria of Bacolod,” William Ong, president of Bacolod Capitol Hill Land Development Corp., said 888 Chinatown Square, set to open on Feb. 29, will have a different shopping atmosphere from the other major malls in the city.
“You will enjoy shopping here,” said Ong, who announced the mall’s soft opening with vice president for operations Carlson Ty and mall manager Ramel Flandes in a press conference at the Beijing Foodcourt yesterday.
“How did we have the courage and guts to put up a mall like this? I believe we have a different concept,” he said of the tiangge-type mall at the corner of Gatuslao Street and Cottage Road.
Ong describes the two-storey 888 China Town Square as a shopping center in the fashion of Manila 168 and Divisoria “set up into a mall with premium amenities.” He said they will not only offer a wise shopping alternative for the Bacoleños and the Negrenses but also provide rare business opportunities to small and medium entrepreneurs to sell their products.
The new shopping center will have more than 300 tiangge stalls selling, among others, garments, bags, shoes, accessories, jewelries, and cellular phones.
It will also have amenities like food court and food stalls, playground for kids, supermarket, and producers’ wet market.
Flandes said 888 China Town Square already has an 80 percent occupancy rate. Rentals for nine to ten-square meter spaces range from P5,200 to P5,800 a month.
Tenants from Manila will also sell their goods at the mall but most of the occupants are locals whose prices will be comparable to the tiangge-type stalls at 168 mall and Divisoria, Flandes said.
The 888 China Town Square occupies a 1.2-hectare property which Bacolod Capitol Hill, owned by Ong and several other local Filipino-Chinese businessmen, have leased for P200,000 from the Negros Occidental provincial ]government, under a 35-year contract.
Ong said his group invested more than P100 million to develop the newest mall in Bacolod.

Solo art exhibit opens March 15
Artist Anthony Fermin will open his 19th solo art exhibit at the Moravia Gallery Bar Upper Italia Restaurant at B.S. Aquino Drive, Bacolod City on March 15 that will run until April 8.
This is the 6th exhibit in Bacolod City of Fermin, 31, who comes from a family of artists and is married to Evan Abalona of E.B. Magalona. He has painted professionally for 14 years and has exhibited in other countries like Germany, Spain and France.
His artworks depict the Negros culture and its scenes in oil, acrylic and mixed media. The exhibit includes functional art and furniture he created.
He said he has decided to transfer to Bacolod after residing in Cebu for almost 11 years.
Fermin said that aside from the Negrense culture and food, what he likes most is the warm welcome and support he received from the people during his first solo exhibit in Bacolod in 2001 at Robinson’s Place. The exhibit was entitled “Embracing Negros.”
Meanwhile, the Art Association of Bacolod has an ongoing group exhibit at the Moravia Gallery Bar entitled “Love of My Life”, which runs until March 10.*CGS

Pilgrims set to arrive for St. Therese visit
The relics of St. Therese of the Child Jesus will arrive in Bacolod City 1 p.m. March 4, and will be brought to Kabankalan City, in Negros Occidental on March 6, a press release from pilgrimage organizers said.
Pilgrims from Zamboanga and the Diocese of San Carlos, Negros Occidental, led by Bishop Jose Advincula, will bring the relics for a two-day, three-night visit in the province.
The Zamboanga delegation will offer mass at 3 p.m. on March 5, and the San Carlos group at 6 p.m., March 6, both to be held at the chapel of the Carmelite Monastery in Bacolod, the center of the activities, the press release said.
The Bacolod visit is part of the worldwide pilgrimage of the relics of St. Therese, who was declared a doctor of the Catholic Church in 1997. The relics are housed in the Carmelite Monastery in Lisieux, France, where the saint spent her last nine years as a cloistered nun, the press release said.
The Catholic church has 33 doctors, three of them women, including St. Therese who is the youngest. She was declared a saint and doctor largely because of her autobiography, The “Story of a Soul,” which she wrote on orders of her superiors.
The Secretariat of the organizing group for the visit can be reached through Tel. No. 476-1435, the press release added.*

Gawad Kalinga holds ‘1-M Bayani’ rally in Bacolod
Edith B. Colmo
BACOLOD CITY — The Gawad Kalinga 1 Million Bayani Rally held at the Capitol Lagoon over the weekend, the first of the nationwide series of rallies, had brought in thousands of volunteers, which came mostly from the youth sectors.
The rally, held with the theme" Barkadahan Laban sa Kahirapan, was aimed at gathering one million volunteers from different sectors, according to Jose Mari Oquiñena, national coordinator.
Every volunteer is a hero or bayani, hence the project’s is name of 1 Million Bayani.
"Where there are bayanis, there is unity," he said.
To become member of 1 Million Bayani, the volunteer must render four hours a month of volunteer work in a certain GK cite.
There is no age limit because we are interested to attain a squatter-free and hunger-free Philippines in the future, Oquiñena said.
As of this date he said, "there are more or less 100,000 GK volunteers. That’s why we target 1 million, because the more volunteers, the more support the poor communities will avail themselves of."
There are other GK groups abroad: two in Jakarta, Indonesia; one in Papua New Guinea, and one in Cambodia.
In Negros Occidental there are 23 GK sites, and Bacolod City has three.
"GK puts into action our faith in God," Oquiñena said.
Vincent Rivera, GK Region 6 youth development program coordinator said, the program is in partnership with the Department of Education (DEPED) designed to activate participation of youth, young professionals from various companies and sectors, and also those from the schools.

Bacolod Sanggunian Supports Phasing out of Incandescent Bulbs
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod City has approved a Resolution sponsored by Councilor Jocelle Batapa Sigue last Thursday strongly supporting the national government’s move of phasing out incandescent bulbs to cut greenhouse gas emissions and save on electricity by encouraging all households and establishments in Bacolod City, either public or private, including facilities owned and managed by the City Government of Bacolod to avoid or otherwise reduce the use of inefficient incandescent bulbs in favor of more energy efficient compact fluorescent lamps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut energy cost.
This resolution also requests the national government through President Arroyo to integrate the City of Bacolod in the programs and projects undertaken under the Asian Development Bank loan to help fund a range of programs on energy efficiency, including pilot programs that could be continued as long-term development projects including the provision of compact fluorescent lamps to low income families to mitigate the impact of change from incandescent lighting.
President Arroyo, in her closing remarks at the recently-held 2008 Philippine Energy Summit, announced the country’s plans to phase out incandescent bulbs by
January 2010 following Australia’s similar move early last year, which was followed by Canada and other industrialized countries.
This plan of the Arroyo administration, which is said to be the first for Asia, seeks to phase out the inefficient incandescent bulbs in favor of more energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) that will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and cut household energy costs.
While CFL’s are more expensive to buy than incandescent bulbs, they pay for themselves in lower power bills within a year. CFL’s use around 20% of the electricity used by incandescent bulbs to produce the same amount of light. Additionally, CFL’s last six to ten times longer than the average incandescent bulb.
The switch to CFL’s will result in household lighting costs falling by as much as 80%, and the country’s annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions falling 2 million metric tons starting in 2010. Additionally, national electricity demand is expected to fall by 2,000 megawatts, or the equivalent of electricity generated by six power plants.
Electric lighting generates emissions equal to 70% of those from all the world’s passenger vehicles, and 90% of the energy consumed by each bulb generates heat, which then adds to air-conditioning costs. The Philippine Network on Climate Change disseminates information about this program because it seeks to help our energy crisis, address climate change and reduce energy consumption.
Thomas Crouch, Deputy Director General of Asian Development Bank’s Southeast Asia Department stated that the most effective way we can reduce energy demand and greenhouse gases by using energy more efficiently. The climate change challenge is a global one. ADB will support and encourage other developing countries to follow the Philippine Government lead and make the switch to more energy-efficient products like compact fluorescent lamps.
Since the ADB is considering extending a $30 million loan later this year to the Philippines to help fund a range of programs on energy efficiency, including pilot programs that could be continued as long-term development projects and that portions of the ADB funding could be used to provide CFLs to low-income families to mitigate the impact of the change from incandescent lighting, the City of Bacolod seeks to manifest its support for the program and seeks the integration of the City of Bacolod in the projects undertaken by the national government under the ADB loan.* (CNC)

WNU: 'Rendezvous with Destiny'
By Gil ALfredo B. Severino
http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/bac/2008/02/27/news/wnu.rendezvous.with.destiny..html
"I BELIEVE this will happen," Dr. Suzzette Agustin said after the launching ceremony of the university status, from what used to be West Negros College.
Agustin added, "We did all we can, from good to better until the best."
She said, "I quoted the phrase 'a rendezvous with destiny' and together with this is our commitment to make all students' dreams come true especially those who are wanting and needed to be served."
She recalled that there is something awesome in transforming the college to a university. She explained however that she, "really is not into this global thing. I just want to do what is best. It's doing the best that gives me happiness."
Among the highlights of her speech during the ceremony Tuesday morning, Agustin commended the WNU teachers whom she said are giving, "who they are, their lives, their beings."
While the College's status had been transformed, she said they, including the students should continue, "to serve the community."

for university status
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Officials from the government, academe, church and military lauded West Negros University for its new academic status in a launching ceremony held yesterday at the school’s gymnasium.
Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said West Negros has been part of the growth and development of the city with thousands of graduates finding employment in different establishments in Bacolod.
Leonardia said he had witnessed how the school metamorphosed into a prestigious academic institution and the university status is an honor it fittingly deserves.
Armed Forces of the Philippines Central Command commandeer Lt. Gen. Victor Ibrado said he is proud to have spent his early college years in the engineering department of West Negros.
Paying tribute to the school administrators who stirred the school to its university status, Ibrado said he is proud to be a Wesnecan.
Also present during the ceremony was Central Philippine University Vice President for Administration Rev. Joniel Howard Gico who expressed support to the community and academic programs of WNU.
Representing Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, Vicar General Victorino Rivas said the school lives up to its slogan “Veritas, Virtu” which means truth and virtue in promoting quality Christian education among its students.
Meanwhile, WNU president Suzette Agustin expressed her appreciation and gratitude to the past presidents and administrators of the school in its journey to become a university.
She said that the new status of West Negros provides great opportunities and limitless possibilities to all Wesnecans.*NAB

That's a very good news indeed. This is what Mayor Oti has been predicting that Silay will also bask in progress. This is what Mayor Bing was also afraid of because of the new airport there; that the airport will be like a magnet that attracts business to it. Pero, I think complimentary man lang ang two cities, I just hope that Mayor Bing has given up on his Retain Bacolod Airport movement and concentrate in inviting more investors to the Most Business-Friendly City in the country. Besides, as long as new businesses in Silay won't touch the very historical architectures that made Silay the Paris of the South, it won't be a problem.

Thanks for this piece/s of good news @NG. Silay City badly needed a deluxe hotel to spur further the economic benefits of NBSA. Silay can be a leisure hub for the entire Negros Occ. while maintaining Bacolod's dominance as the center for commerce and trade. The two cities will boost the advantages of complementing each other in the business and leisure departments. Silay City can become a major player in the soon-to-be accomplished Metro Bacolod corridor. This include the cities of Talisay in the North and Bago in the South. The east side is already an upcoming boom area. We will definitely see a brighter and stronger Bacolod/Negros economy this 2008 and the years ahead. With all this, we must thank HIM always.:)

Foreign tourist arrivals
in Bacolod up by 122%
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Foreign tourist arrival in Bacolod City has increased by 122 percent in 2007 compared to 2006, while Overseas Filipino Workers arrival increased by 86 percent covering the same period, records from the Bacolod City Tourism Office showed.
Records showed that foreign tourist arrival in 2007 was 46,354 compared to 20,922 in 2006, while OFW arrival in 2007 was 14,128 compared to 7,612 in 2006.
Domestic tourist arrival also increased from 242,832 in 2007 compared to 224,728 in 2006, or an increase of eight percent, records also showed.
Total tourist arrival in Bacolod City last year is up by 20 percent, registering 303,314 visitors as against 253,262 in 2006.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said the total 20 percent increase is higher by 12 percent over that of the national tourist arrival which is only eight percent, as reported on television and the national papers by the Department of Tourism. It is the highest increase so far in tourist arrival registered in Bacolod, he said.
City Tourism Officer Imogene Kanaan said the increase in tourist arrivals can be credited to the call centers operating in the city. They have also observed that there are foreigners who come here to meet their “cybermates” and expats who like Bacolod and invite their friends or relatives to visit the city, she said.
The 2007 total visitors’ arrival means a tourism gross receipts of P985,425,430 which is arrived at by multiplying the total number of tourists by the Average Daily Expense of a tourist, pegged at P2,995 which is a result of a survey done by the Asian Institute of Tourism on Western Visayas on the standard spending of a tourist.
Kanaan said the Koreans top the five foreign tourist arrivals, flowed by Americans, Japanese, Canadians and Germans. This is the first time the Koreans topped the list of tourist arrivals, she said, adding that before it used to be the Americans.
Based on the category of accommodation establishments, the top grosser in tourist arrival for 2007 is L’Fisher Hotel for first class hotels, Sugarland for standard hotels, Pension Bacolod for pensions, Bacolod Pension Plaza for tourist inns and Palmas Del Mar for resorts, she said.
Kanaan said they have also observed that since 2005 there has been a steady increase of investment in tourism especially in accommodation facilities – construction of new hotels/pensions and renovation of existing ones, with an average of four new structures a year.
Another four new accommodation establishments are set to open in the city this year, she said.*CGS

Grand opening at Saltimboca
The mood was festive and upbeat when Saltimboca launched its newest amenity, the Saltimboca Function Hall, recently. This is the latest addition to the popular Saltimboca Music Bar, Restaurant and Tourist Inn.
The first thing that struck us when we arrived, was its wide parking area. As we entered the new building, we were struck by the impressive clean lines of the façade. The interior design was undeniably elegant with its wonderful play of colors and light. Owners Joebert and Patty Cuaycong made the right choice in appointing architect Azucena Araneta and interior designer Bingirl Javelona, to come up with this gorgeous structure. The theater-type function hall can accommodate 500 people.
Rep. Monico Puentevella and wife, Patching, cut the ribbon while Father Romeo Tumunong officiated at the blessing. Guests oohed and aahed at the interiors as Patty and Joebert informed them that the new all-purpose function hall can be a venue for big parties, wedding receptions, seminars, birthdays, etc. There is a spacious stage at one end of the hall where shows and presentations can be held. During the opening, everyone enjoyed the excellent culinary delights specially prepared for the occasion.
Saltimboca manager Tippi Jalandoni and PRO (Marketing) Token Lizares, table-hopped, making sure the guests were having a great time. Entertainment was provided by Marylin Acot-Relles, who sang popular songs to everyone’s delight.
Most of the guests said this was certainly a welcome addition to Bacolod where parties galore are held every week. Kudos to Joebert and Patty Cuaycong for their new Saltimboca Function
