^^ Yup. Also reminds me of Toyota Showroom near MOA here in Manila. :)
Anyway, at least something will perk up the reclamation. After all, this is "City of the Future" as it was envisioned several decades ago. (I remember that billboard indicating that during the 1981 Holy Mass of Pope John Paul II in Bacolod City...in other words, Manukan Country and SM City Bacolod are standing on Holy grounds? Much like Cebu's IT Park now, hehe!!)

Balo prepares for most friendly city search
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod City Administrator Roger Balo yesterday said Bacolod City is now preparing for the search for the Most Business Friendly City in the Philippines for 2008.

He said they will have a chance to correct the information submitted by the City Planning and Development Office to the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center, which ranked Bacolod City only at number 15 (not 17 as earlier reported) among the mid-sized cities in the Philippines in its recent competitiveness survey.

Bacolod ranked number one among the mid-sized cities in the 2005 AIM survey.

Balo said this time, their report will exhibit the actual situation of Bacolod City . He said the report submitted by the CPDO did not include the new government center, the slaughterhouse, SM City, the call centers and the traffic lights, which doubled in the past two years.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said he has requested Balo to ask the people concerned to explain the matter and to see to it that it will not happen again.

“Our aces were kept and were not laid on the table,” he said.

Based on the results released by AIM this week, Olongapo City ranked number one among the mid-sized cities with an overall score of 7.05, followed by General Santos – 6.94, Tarlac City – 8.8, San Pablo – 6.75, Cabanatuan – 6.74, Tagum – 6.66, Lucena – 6.64,

Iloilo – 6.6, both Angeles and Butuan scored 6.58, San Fernando Pampanga – 6.56, Tacloban and Cagayan de Oro scored 6.49, Lipa – 6.48, Iligan – 6.42, Puerto Princesa – 6.34, Bacolod – 6.3, Baguio – 6.27, Zamboanga – 6.19, Batangas – 6.14, San Jose , Bulacan – 6.02 and Antipolo – 5.78.

Leonardia said it was a surprise that Bacolod slid down to no. 15. They made an analysis of what could possibly be the causes and they found out that in the criteria of “dynamism of economy” Bacolod ranked low, he said, which for him is hard to believe and ironic because the city's economic growth in the past two years was unprecendented.

Balo found out that the cause was erroneous reporting, Leonardia said, adding that the CPDO did not live up to expectations.

However, Leonardia said they will try to do better next time. It is a consolation that in the area of “quality of life,” Bacolod remained in the top five, he said. He clarified that he is not questioning the result of the AIM survey. They can't do anything but accept it although he believes it is not truly reflective of the real situation in Bacolod , he said.

Leonardia said he does not think the report was a real indication because if it were correct, the city could have ranked higher. He cited that Balo prepared the presentation to the Philippine-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry which is why Bacolod won the Most Business Friendly City award in the whole Philippines .

“Aside from Bacolod being declared by MoneySense as the Best Place to Live, we have seen how our economy has metamorphosed over the past few years into a vibrant one,” he added.

Leonardia said they believe that the new government center is the major reason why Bacolod became the Most Business-Friendly City .

He said that during the evaluation, Balo cited that it is an inducement to invest in Bacolod because it symbolizes the capability, professionalism and intention of government to be of better service to its clientele particularly business, while other cities cited their marketing schemes.

Balo noted that in the 2007 survey there were 25 entries for the mid-sized cities while the 2005 survey only involved 15.

He said it's unfortunate that the representative of AIM twice had scheduled a site interview and to look at the facilities of Bacolod but the two schedules were not realized. The basis of their evaluation was the report submitted to them by the CPDO, which did not address the drivers and perimeters that are required for the best competitive cities, he said.

Leonardia said this is a big lesson that they have to submit accurate data. “This is serious only image-wise but we really know for a fact what we have here in Bacolod , “ he said.

“Before my political opponents will hammer on this,” Leonardia said, he was the one who made Bacolod number one. “Sometimes you lose, sometimes you win.” Nevertheless, we all should help each other to counter this and project a positive image for Bacolod ,” he said.

If they want to put Bacolod down, then their desire is not for Bacolod but for political reasons, Leonardia said.

He said they are sorry that there was a deficiency in the way the report was handled but it does not really indicate the real situation of Bacolod . “It's only a tag but in reality we believe otherwise,” he said.*CGS

Accor Hotel to build no-frills hotel
By Ma. Elisa P. Osorio
Thursday, July 10, 2008

European based Accor Hotel, United Kingdom’s Yotel, Malaysian hotel chain and two Indian firms are interested in building no frills hotels in the country.

“I will be meeting the representatives from the Indian firms in the next 90 days,” Samie Lim, chairman of the Philippine Franchisers Association said in an interview.

Lim refused to name the Indian companies saying only that one group owns four hotels while the other operates 30 hotels.

Lim explained that he is studying the concept of the Malaysian group which ties up the budget air fare to the hotel. “Air Asia has a partnership with a hotel near the airport. It is a good business,” he explained.

Lim said the investments are part of the ASEAN hotel project of the ASEAN member nations namely the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia.

The ASEAN hotel plans to build similar no frills hotels in the 10 member countries. The hotels will be priced the same. The amenities, rooms and the lobby of all the hotels across the ASEAN will be the same as well.

According to Lim, the ASEAN ministers approved the ASEAN hotel concept last year after the meeting of the economic ministers in Manila.

“All the ASEAN hotels will have similar services and integrated marketing and advertising,” Lim explained. “They will also conduct a centralized training for the food and beverage staff.”

This, he said, is necessary in order to ensure that the services provided by all ASEAN hotels are consistent.

Also, Lim said there will be more than one ASEAN hotel per country. In the Philippines, he said there should be ASEAN hotels in all major tourist destinations like Cebu, Boracay, Bacolod, Baguio and Ilocos.

Lim further said that the owner of the franchise in the country must be a local. If this is not possible, he said at least a big chunk of the hotel franchise is owned by a resident. For example, the master franchise of the hotel must be 34 percent owned by locals.

The Accor Hotel is currently operating in nearly 100 countries. It is the European leader in hotels and the global leader in corporate services. Yotel on the other hand is also a no frills hotel operating in United Kingdom.
^^
i hope they will build the hotel at the reclamation area.

Robinsons Land to develop 7 BPO sites

Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) will develop seven BPO and call-center sites this year, expanding the company’s office space inventory and regional presence.

“We are currently incorporating office spaces intended for BPOs and call-center operators in our shopping mall developments, specifically Robinsons Luisita in Tarlac City, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu between Cebu’s Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmena.“ says Henry Yap, business unit general manager for office buildings division at RLC.

“Robinsons Cybergate Davao, on J. P. Laurel in the Bajada District, and Robinsons Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong City are also under construction and will be ready for occupancy by next year. “We are currently accepting lease inquiries for all these properties.”

These projects are in addition to two recently completed projects in Robinsons Otis, in Manila and Cybergate Tower 3 in Mandaluyong City.

BPO and call-center firms are rapidly expanding into the regions due to lower costs of operations, larger manpower pool and lower rate of employee turnover. The relatively lower cost of operations in the Philippines have encouraged many firms in the United States and Western Europe to outsource their operations to the Philippines, thereby making these sites even more desirable and lucrative.

RLC, a leading property developer and landlord of choice, expects locators for business process outsourcing and the call-center industry are gearing their expansion plans toward key regional urban centers. “These areas—Cebu, Davao, Northern Luzon and the Calabarzon—offer talented and highly skilled human resources sourced from prestigious educational institutions that are highly proficient in English,” said Yap. It will be recalled that the RLC sites were among the cities outside of Metro Manila identified by a study done by Institute for Development and Economic Analysis Inc.

RLC has built BPOs and call centers in Bacolod, Lipa (Batangas) and Sta. Rosa (Laguna) and Cainta (Rizal).

another piece of good news for bacolod and negros occidental....

BaNeg softbelle champs bound for World Series
BY NIDA BUENAFE

GUANGZHOU, China – Three Philippine teams, represented by the 11-12 Major Leaguers of Bacolod City – Negros Occidental, Big League squad of Adamson University, and 13-14 Junior League team of Domingo Lacson National High School, yesterday outclassed their rivals from Guam and Indonesia to earn tickets to the World Series championship in the United States next month.

The Bacolod Negros team, composed of players from Education and Training Center School I and II and reinforcements from town schools in the province, trashed Guam, 12-2, to win three-in-a-row in their best-of-five series.

Manila League’s Adamson University, with half of its members coming from the ranks of the Bacolod-Negros Little Leaguers, outclassed Indonesia 11-1, after their 17-1 and 13-3 domination of their rivals in their earlier matches to barge into the world championships in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

And in the afternoon, The Philippines clinched its third Asia-Pacific title when the Junior League (13-14) prevailed over Guam, 12-3, at the resumption of their match here at the Huangcun Sports Training Base.

Anavic Jugos, assistant team captain of the Adamson Big League, who scored two runs in the championship game, said they dedicate their victory to fellow Negrense Mary Chris Gidalonon, team captain, who missed the Guangzhou trip due to an eye surgery in Manila.

The Bacolod girls blanked Guam, 11-0, in their first encounter and followed it up with a 6-3 triumph Wednesday enroute to their title-clinching match yesterday and a trip to Portland, Oregon for the world title.

Naica Kilayko, daughter of a tricycle driver in the central Negros town of Moises Padilla and a freshman at Guinpanaan National High School , who is joining an international event for the first time after playing as a rookie in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa, led the Philippine scorers with three runs.

Teammates Lorry Mae Lisbo of Silay City, lead pitcher J-Raniel Andrade of Bacolod City, a freshmen at West Negros University high school department, and Rea Mae de la Cruz, a sixth grader at ETCS I, also a native of Moises Padilla town, registered double runs apiece.

Bacolod team official Teresita Himpolaran offered their triumph to the “Filipino nation and to the people of Negros and Bacolod” as she thanked supporters, especially the Philippine Sports Commission through Chairman Butch Ramirez and its commissioner for the assistance they extended to the Negros – Bacolod players.

We hope that the PSC will continue its support for the countryside sports development program, all for the glory of the nation, she added.

Guamenian coach Roman Aguero complimented the Philippine players “as a very good team – they are good in passing, pitching and hitting,” adding his players are happy to have participated in the tournament as he expressed hopes that they will be ready to challenge the Philippine team in two year’s time.

The victory was witnessed by lawyer Jolly Gomez, Philippine Little League district director, who said the Bacolod teams overflow with talent and their team officials sacrificed a lot for their team as he also expressed hopes that “the local government will continue to support them, particularly in their trip to the world series.”

Twins Elma and Elna Parohinog and Maricar Barrientos, of Bacolod City, added two runs each to the Adamson scoring spree with Harlyn Joy Tubongbanua and Erica Escanuela and Manileña Melanie Laserna scoring one run each.

In the Junior League championship encounter between Guam and the Philippines, the team from DLNHS in Bacolod City led 10-0, all runs made on the first inning Wednesday afternoon, when their match was stopped by heavy rains.

Apparently assured of their third victory, the Filipino girls allowed Guam to outscore them 3 against 2 runs at the resumption.

“We’re tired, really tired that the team relaxed somehow, knowing that we’re way ahead,” said catcher Michelle Lentija.

The Philippine squad, coached by Rosie Velasco, had earlier won over Guam, 3-0, and 8-6 in the first two matches in their best-of-five series.

“We hope we can make it to the World Series in Kirkland, Washington,” the coach said, apparently concerned with funds that they need to make it to the world finals.

Manila-based Little League District Director, Jolly Gomez, of the Philippine Little League, said the team will receive $10,000 from the world series organizers as assistance for winning the Asia-Pacific event.

The same amount will be received by the two other qualifiers – the 11-12 group also from Bacolod, and the 16-18 team from Manila, represented by the Adamson University softbelles.

The winner in the Senior League, which will be contested between host China and the Philippines on Friday will get $20,000 since more than two teams – including Indonesia and Guam -- participated in the Asia-Pacific Zonal.

Guam team manager Alex Gumataotao said he was pleased with the girls’ performance saying they even outscored the Philippines, against two in today’s resumption. “The team fought hard and the girls did their best,” he said, as he pointed out that they need to minimize errors if they must beat the Philippines in future competitions. Without the errors, we might have won, he added.

Christine Sebuan, a third year high school student and a rice farmer’s daughter from Murcia, Negros Occidental, spearheaded the campaign of the Bacolod girls with three runs – two made in the first inning Wednesday and another registered in the third canto yesterday, with Shareen Garcia and Clarice Palma scoring two each.*NAB

^^
i hope that they will also build a Robinsons Cybergate Tower in Bacolod.:)

Hello, mga migo its been long since I have posted. I was stranded in Boracay Island with Typhoon Frank (never slept for 48 hours of the rampaging storm)and was down with an illness before I went back to Bacolod. It was a heartbreaking 7-hour travel from Caticlan to Iloilo City. I ran out of adjectives to describe what I saw during the travel. Landslides from Nabas to Ibajay, mud covered Ibajay, wind-damaged Tangalan and the horrendous devastation of Numancia and Kalibo. Daw masuka ko sa nakita ko. then daw mabuang ako that it was also a calamitous devastation from Dueñas to Jaro, Iloilo City. My cousins were nearly swept away from their house in Zarraga and nothing was left of the appliances and stuff of my titos' house in Jaro. Balo prepares for most friendly city search
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod City Administrator Roger Balo yesterday said Bacolod City is now preparing for the search for the Most Business Friendly City in the Philippines for 2008.

He said they will have a chance to correct the information submitted by the City Planning and Development Office to the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center, which ranked Bacolod City only at number 15 (not 17 as earlier reported) among the mid-sized cities in the Philippines in its recent competitiveness survey.

i agree jeff, if they could only put up a resto/bar strip in bredco, it'll be great. Bacolod needs a fresher ambiance and a new place to hangout. we have new bars and restos but they are located in different spots...i wish they could create a place where people can dine and party at the same time..

hahaha!!! all they got to do first is to fix the road and clear the bushes. :) I dont know if the Medical Center is still on the list but i am still hoping they will put up another hospital. There are still more rooms for improvement in BREDCO and they are still expanding towards Banago :)

ZUBIRI SAYS
Southern Negros comparable to Boracay

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri yesterday said that southern Negros is comparable to Boracay, Bohol, and northern Cebu in terms of the beauty of its beaches and diving areas.

Zubiri, who visited Danjugan Island Wednesday and met with local officials from the government, suggested developing eco-tourism potentials to boost employment through tourism.

Fishermen can convert their bancas to dive boats and earn more, he said.

Zubiri noted that in Anilao, Batangas, where fishermen only earned a few hundred pesos a day from fishing now earn as much as P1,000 a day by shuttling divers to their dive spots.

At the same time, he stressed the importance of conservation efforts in the area. He said in the northern Cebu area of Malapacua, dynamite fishing was rampant, but well meaning residents converted their livelihood to eco tourism and invited the people to come to enjoy the white sand beaches and beautiful thresher sharks in their dive spots.

Within three years, the sleepy town was transformed into a mini Boracay and continuously grows because the beauty of the area is the key to the continued livelihood of its residents, Zubiri said.

The residents themselves protect their areas from poachers and illegal fishermen, he added.

Zubiri said he is committed to supporting the eco-tourism efforts of the coastal communities of southern Negros.

Zubiri was invited to Danjugan Island by Gerry Ledesma.*

Employment fair
held at La Carlota

Close to 500 jobseekers participated in the recent job fair conducted by the La Carlota city government through its Human Resource Management Office and Public Employment Services Office, at the La Carlota City College campus.

The applicants, who came from various areas in Negros Occidental, sought employment in both local and foreign companies.

Local companies that participated were SM Department Store and Supermarket, Central Azucarera de La Carlota, and call centers Teletech and the Teleperformance.
Job opportunities abroad were available for nurses, engineers, welders, domestic helpers, carpenters, architects, hotel staff and for skilled workers.

The Department of Labor and Employment and the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration supervised the job fair and gave an orientation to the applicants. The DOLE also offered local jobs for clerks, accountants, account executives, therapists, teachers, cashiers, engineers and skilled workers.

In Bacolod City, 188 workers were deployed for overseas employment in May through the assistance of its PESO.

Also, in the same month 1,878 Bacoleños applied for jobs with PESO and 1,602 were hired by local companies. Of the 276 who applied for overseas, only 188 were hired.

PESO-Bacolod is also holding livelihood seminars on welding, vulcanizing and food processing to help jobless Bacoleños find opportunities to earn a living.*

Bago City seeks more
investors, mayor says

Bago City is opening its doors to more investors, Mayor Ramon Torres said at his State of the City Address at the Bago City Coliseum on Wednesday.

“We encourage the influx of more investors as we offer a secured place for you to invest,” he said.

Torres said Bago City provides investors incentives and a favorable investment climate, and will never intervene with those doing legal business in their city.

“We offer Bago to you as the next investment haven,” he said.

Torres said his administration will always welcome the contribution of investors to the progress and growth of Bago City. “It is our gratitude and honor to establish a new bond of working relationship with (investors) towards a better economy, more employment opportunities and promising future for the younger and next generations.”

Torres said the city government has been dispersing 3,393 bags of palay seeds of different varieties to 1,291 farmers at subsidized cost. Also, distributed were organic fertilizers and vegetable seed packs while techno demonstration and farmer field schools were also conducted.

He said they have also established and assisted an organic village in collaboration with the Negros Occidental provincial government, the Agricultural Training Institute, and the Department of Agriculture.

The organic village has evolved from a farming technology center to a study tour destination in Bago, the mayor said.

Torres said that for agro-industrial progress, the city will work to maintain the stature of Bago as the district agro-industrial center; infuse modern technology for agriculture and lead the rebirth of organic backyard for better food production and sufficiency; and encourage the influx of agro-industrial investments, especially those utilizing renewable energies without sacrificing the environment.

He said that the city government will also continue to support farmers in the form of farm inputs, technology transfer and market linkages, and provide incentives and support to environment friendly and organically grown and developed farms.

Also, infrastructure support will be provided to farmers through communal irrigation systems and well-maintained farm-to-market road networks and bridges, Torres added.

Torres said the agenda of his administration is summarized in the acronym BAGO – B for Barangay Empowerment and Development, A for Agri-Industrial Productivity, G for Good Governance and O for Opportunities for Bagonhons.*NLG

and whats good about it is that the exercise routine will be implemented by license physical therapists. Its really good that riverside is adding more features to its name. :)

^^ Finally, Bacolod can experience a fitness center thats comparable to Fitness First, Slimmers, Gold's(?) and the rest. The key here should be its equipments/exercise machines. Dapat according to standards.:)

Whats New?!!!!!

riverside is i guess geared up towards medical tourism and wellness with the addition of this sophisticated facilities. i hope we'll get a share of this billion dollar industry. next to bpo's, medical tourism and wellness is hitting ground in countries like thailand and malaysia.

PAL GOLF TOURNEY, A BOON TO BACOLOD

BACOLOD CITY, February 26, 2005 (STAR) THE SOUTHERN BEAT By Rolly Espina The Philippine Star 02/26/2005

An enthusiastic hotelier was captured by television cameras yesterday chortling contentedly that the PAL Inter-Club Golf Tournament will mean at least P20 million in cash infusion into the Bacolod economy.

That, to a certain extent, affirmed the importance of sports in promoting tourism as capsulized by the recently concluded sports tourism seminar which saw PITC’s Obet Pagdanganan rooting enthusiastically for sports tourism.

Local hotels and pension houses are bursting to the seams. And many of the participants of the golf tournament are living in with host-families. After all, most of them are also related by blood or affinity to some of the local participants.

Actually, the Inter-Club tournament kicks off today in different venues. But the tournament week actually began last Thursday with the ceremonial drives at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club in Marapara, Barangay Bata. That signaled the start of the PAL Seniors Inter-Club’s 19th edition for players aged 55 and above.

PAL president Jaime Bautista led the tee-off. He was joined by Rep. Monico Puentevella (Bacolod City), Mayor Esteban Coscolluela of Murcia, and Jose Ma. Zayco of the provincial government. Also, the group was joined by PAL executive Domingo Duerme, chairman of the Inter-Club.

The heads of the two host clubs — Dr. Toto Rivera of the Negros Occidental GCC and Ed Gasambelo of the Bacolod Golf and Country Club — also attended the ceremonies in Marapara.

The Luisita Golf and Country Club of Tarlac, headed by former Tarlac Rep. Jose Cojuangco Jr., the new team captain, is shooting for an unprecedented sixth straight championship.

The eyes of Negrenses are focused on the Negrense members of the Luisita team. They include Iggy Clavecilla, Carlos Gamban, Alex Montelibano, Francis Gaston and Richie Garcia.

Aside from Wack Wack, other local clubs challenging Luisita are the Alabang, Manila Southwoods and Villamor golf clubs.

There are also clubs from the United States, Canada, China, Australia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia and Taiwan.

Tourism-oriented establishments are naturally looking only at the projected expenditures of the visitors and their families. But what may have escaped them is that several of the top business executives and investors joining the tournament have been busy talking business with some local partners.

Former vice governor Roy Gamboa, for example, was busy telephoning friends from Silay City to a closed-door meeting scheduled Friday with a group of balikbayans from the United States who are "interested in investing in land business ventures."

That may be a sideline impact. But overall that is something that the PAL Inter-Club may bring to the local community — potential business ventures.

That may explain why Sammy Palanca, president of the Bacolod Public Estate Development Corp. (BREDCO), raised last week the idea of putting up another golf club in Bacolod or in a nearby place. That could even be right at the BREDCO reclamation area which now boasts of the Port of Bacolod City.

i admire Mr. Palanca for being a visionary but a golf course right at BREDCO is soooooo impossible not unless he is going to reclaim the land further so that he can create an 18 hole golf course. I think the one in Punta taytay will also be converted into a golf course but i dont know why until now they havent done anything on that area yet.

AT SOFTBALL TOURNEY
It was an RP sweep in China
BY NIDA BUENAFE

GUANGZHOU, China – The Domingo Lacson National High School Senior softball team from Bacolod City repeated its elimination win over host China Saturday to complete the sweep of all four Philippine teams in the 2008 Little League Softball Girls Asia-Pacific Tournament at the Huangcun Sports Training Base here.

The 11-1 win of the DLNHS softbelles assured the team of their trip to Delaware in the United States next month for the World Series and $20,000 subsidy from little league international governing body is a bittersweet victory for us. While we are happy to be declared as champion once again, this team along with the Major and Junior champions from Bacolod City have been plagued by problems since we arrived here in China,” DLNHS coach Tony Oquindo said.

Still, he congratulated his players for doing their best and for bringing honor to the country.

The championship match between the girls from Philippines and their much taller counterparts from China was beset with injuries from both squads in the fifth inning.

Jenalyn Polinario and Elvie Entrina stamped their class against the Chinese with runs in the first inning while Nerissa Benjamin and Cherry Bartolome made it 4-0 in the second canto.

The China team tried to stop the surge of the RP squad but starting pitcher Julie Marie Muyco still managed to make a run in the third inning while Polinario scored her second run inning.

Diving for a run at the home plate, pitcher Analie Benjamin injured her left hand when she grabbed hard on the plant and accidentally sent down Chinese catcher Xie Wen Ling who fell hard on the ground and has to be carried out of the diamond.

Despite the brief interruption in the play, pitcher Analie Benjamin was able to add to the score of the RP team along with her cousin and teammate Angelique. The two Benjamin’s sealed the win for the DLNHS softbelles with two more runs in the sixth inning.

Meanwhile, all four teams from the Philippines together with the delegation from Guam have to stay for two more days here despite the tournament officially ending Saturday due to changes in playing schedule which the organizers failed to relay to the participants.

The delegation were asked to pay reduced charges of $16 per person to cover for their accommodation and meals at the hotel.*NAB

MassKara Festival dancers to perform in South Korea
BACOLOD City – This city’s MassKara Festival will perform in the Mask Dance Festival of Andong, South Korea. Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the city will try its best to send a delegation to honor the invitation extended by Andong Mayor Kim Hwi-Dong.

The invitation was personally delivered by festival organizers Moon, Hyung Suk and Kwon Du-Hyun.

In his letter, Mayor Kim Hwi-Dong stressed that the MassKara Festival’s participation will be beneficial to Bacolod and Andong culturally, economically, educationally and politically.

“We want to experience Philippine culture especially Bacolod, and its kind of masks. You can promote products in our festival,” he said.

Andong’s Mask Festival is now on its 35th year as a local festival and 12th as an international festival.

“It's already famous in the world. The art of mask making is an intangible heritage of higher art. Countries like Japan, China, Thailand and India have already participated in the Andong Festival,” said Moon, one of the festival's organizers.

The Mask Dance Festival is from September 26 to October 5, 2008.

Meanwhile, a sisterhood pact between Andong and Bacolod City is being worked out by a non-government organization chaired by Carmen Padilla. (PNA)

PSC vows to support Little League
By Abac Cordero
Tuesday, July 15, 2008

The Philippine Sports Commission yesterday vowed to help the RP Little League teams in their future endeavors as long as team officials manage to put their act together.

“We will not hesitate helping and spending more on your teams as long as you do things in order,” PSC chairman Butch Ramirez told Little League coach Tessie Himpolaran.

Four RP Little League teams, three coming from Bacolod and another one from Manila, won their respective divisions in a recent tournament in Guangzhou, China.

The Bacolod clouters took the titles in the Senior League, Little League and Junior League while those from Manila ruled the Big League to advance to the World Series.

The next big fight will take place in Portland in Oregon, Kirkland in Washington and Kalamazoo in Michigan. And these should entail bigger expenses for the teams.

The victories of the four RP teams, however, did not come easy as team officials faced the embarrassment of nearly being sent home for their failure to pay the registration fee.

The PSC came to the rescue with Ramirez personally flying to Guangzhou last week to settle the fee of $3,000 per team or a total of $9,000.

“These team officials should not have subjected these children to such experience. Why travel abroad when you know that you don’t have the money to pay the fees?” said Ramirez.

Himpolaran was almost in tears as she thanked the PSC yesterday.

The PSC spent P250,000 for each of the four teams to shoulder their airfare. Daily allowances for members of the delegations were not part of the request from team officials. Neither was the entry fee of $3,000 which the PSC had to pay when it learned the Beijing organizers would not let them play if they did not pay the required amount.

“The next time you compete abroad, make sure that you are organized. And the PSC will not hesitate to help. If we can help teams that don’t win, then we should be helping you more,” said Ramirez, referring to the bellyaching of some players who claimed they had not received allowances of $300 supposedly to come from the PSC.

“But your officials must prove to us that things are in order. Because if they are, I’m quite sure that even the rich people of Bacolod will also help you,” the PSC chief added.

^^ OT lang: Coz what i understand when you say "pa girls", its a guy who's dressing up the way girls do. I think nobody does that at any fitness centers and this in particular at Fitness First. And its not allowed as well. So how can you say these peeps are "pa girls" so to speak? Not unless you're one of their kind.
