Pacquiao in
Bacolod Thursday
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said Philippine ring icon Manny Pacquiao has confirmed his visit Bacolod Thursday and said he hopes the people of Bacolod will receive him in the same way that they did during his last visit to the city.

Pacquiao won his fourth world championship belt June 28 in Las Vegas. He is the first Asian to achieve such distinction.

Leonardia said they plan to take the boxing champion on a parade in Bacolod as they did in July 2006, to give Bacoleños a chance to see him in person.

The parade will start at 3 p.m. from Goldenfields to Araneta, Libertad to Burgos markets, Shopping area to Sto. Niño stop in Banago, SM City, Central Market, Rizal Elementary School and the downtown area where a program will be held at City Hall, he added.

Leonardia said he informed Iloilo Mayor Jerry Treñas that they are trying to arrange for Pacquiao to also pass Iloilo City which was badly hit by Typhoon Frank.*CGS

‘Bacolod hasn’t given
up on airport’
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Retain Bacolod Airport Movement is still pursuing the re-opening of the old Bacolod airport, Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said.

He said he met with business tycoon Lucio Tan on the matter Monday night in Bacolod, together with Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Greg Gasataya, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos, Alex Paglumotan and Roberto Rojas. Also present were RBAM convenors Rodolfo Alvarez and Charlie Hagad, he said.

Leonardia said they discussed the possibility of re-opening the old Bacolod airport to operate a flying school. Tan said he will make a thorough study on it and also informed them that during his talk with the President, the national government will not fund the project, he said.

If things materialize, the project will be a joint venture of the Lucio Tan group of companies with the Bacolod City government, Leonardia said. This will be studied because there are legal matters and factors to consider, he said.

Leonardia said they will invite the officials of Philippine Airlines and Air Philippines to sit with them next week.*CGS

Zayco priority: Food security in Neg. Occ.
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco yesterday said he is set to deliver his state of the province address by the end of the month or early August.

People should know what I have accomplished and what my plans are for the province, he said.

Zayco said his priority focus for the remainder of his term as governor will be food security for Negros Occidental, since the late Gov. Joseph Marañon had already put in place the infrastructure for improved health care and tourism in the province.

“We have to increase the supply of our food, especially amid the current difficulties being faced by the country, so whatever happens, the people of Negros will be okay,” he said.*CPG

Bacolod continues ties with Keelung, Taiwan
Bacolod City (15 July) -- "It's a continuing friendship between our two cities "Bacolod City Mayor Evelio Leonardia said during his birthday celebrations referring to his special guests from Keelung City, Taiwan.

The mayor considered the visit of Keelung City Officials headed by Mayor Chang Tong-Rong who came all the way from Keelung, Taiwan, Republic of China as a significant part of the celebration.

The Keelung City officials came to reassure Leonardia and the city of Bacolod of a continuing friendship between Keelung and Bacolod.

Leonardia said Keelung City is one of the most generous among Bacolod's sister cities.

"Significantly, it is this city [Keelung] that has given us so much, probably the most generous among our sister cities, although we are not saying that the others are not generous. We are only giving them due recognition. It is just a question of paying tribute to what they have given us," said Leonardia in his speech.

A possible landmark to be built that will signify the strong ties between two cities were initially done during the visit.

"On a personal note, I find this very fulfilling because nagbunga na ang gin tanum ko sang 1996 (my efforts in 1996 has now bore its fruits). The lesson there is that the things that we do sometimes cannot be appreciated at first but eventually, with a good purpose, chances are, they will bear good fruit," said Leonardia.

The Keelung City officials have also inked an agreement with officials of Bacolod City for a renewal of the protocol agreement as sister cities. (CMO/PIA/EAD)

Business

A call from the center of the heart
TAKIN’ CARE OF BUSINESS By Babe Romualdez
Thursday, July 17, 2008

Prospects for the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry seem positive in the next few years, judging from the comprehensive report contained in the Business Processing Association of the Philippines’ “Roadmap 2010.” When the outsourcing industry was introduced sometime in 2000, it only had 1,500 people with revenues amounting to $24 million. By 2006, the BPO workforce had increased to 230,000 with revenues reaching up to $3 billion, representing a small five-percent share of the global market. According to industry experts, the current addressable market worldwide is worth $450 billion, and the Philippines has the potential to reach $13 billion in revenues by 2010 with a sizeable increase in the size of the workforce, estimated to reach 900,000.

A significant factor in the industry’s boom can be attributed to the demand for offshore call centers, which has grown from being mere providers of email responses to almost all types of customer relations ranging from travel, technical support, telemarketing, financial services, education, customer care and support as well as online businesses. In fact, the call center sector has been dubbed as a “sunshine industry,” contributing to 12 percent of the country’s gross national product.

At the onset, an obvious advantage for the Philippines has been the huge number of English-speaking professionals in the country, plus the fact that operational and labor costs are less expensive here than in other countries. But one growing concern is the deteriorating quality of graduates and their ability to speak English. According to data from the Commission on Higher Education, some 450,000 students graduate from college every year, but close to 75 percent of these graduates have been found to have “substandard English skills.” As a result, only five to 10 percent of applicants interviewed for jobs in call center companies get hired, mainly because most of these applicants lack the required proficiency in the English language.

With most call centers located in the National Capital Region and in Cebu, there’s also the possibility of reaching saturation point as these areas start to become “non-competitive,” which is why other cities are being developed as alternative destinations, like Davao, Bacolod, Iloilo, Dumaguete and Tacloban.

let's pin our hopes on this, migo. imagine $13 billion in 2010, that's almost equal the total amount of remittance from OFW's. if we can only get $50 billion out of the $450 billion, then i think government should start training people to be proficient in english especially those who are lured into working as domestic helpers where they are exposed to abuse and maltreatment by employers.

^^ The Sugarland Hotel lobby seems to be out of contrast to its exteriors. The hotel's facade tend to lean more on the classic tone. While its lobby looked contemporary. I would want to see a more classical appeal on its interiors. Not this very "condo-lobby"-like feel of its lobby.:)

Its newly renovated lobby feels more of a condo lobby than a hotel. But its commendable that after all these years, the management embarked on this major renovation works. They could have consulted a more decent ID. As Ive said, the lobby and the hotel's exteriors never matched or in harmony. The facade is more classical while the lobby, its very contemporary. :)

i agree migo. thats what you get when you start renovating. it tends to not conform with the original design. they should taken cue from the ID of planta hotel which to me is a pefect example of what harmony in color and design, inside and out is all about. but we have to understand also that sugarland was in existence way before we were born so its kinda "obsolete" so to speak. but, they really did a good job in maintaining its facade. its a class of its own.:)

Mga amigo, Im still on my 3rd day of indie movie marathon at CCP for the Cinemalaya 2008 (July 11-20) and here's great news:

Namet's of Jay Abello has been included in the top 10 final entries for the full-length category competition (jay abello also had Ligaw Liham last year as a finalist)

As of box office records here since July 11 and last night (july 16) the top grossing entries are:

1. JAY - consistently the top grosser starred by Baron Geisler as a gay reporter named Jay who is making a film docu about a murdered gay man also named Jay; all seat tickets sold out until the end of the festival; also the media and critic favorite after every show (I have been making chismis and chika chika with them para mabal-an ko kung ano nami-an nila)

2. NAMETS - made by a Bacoleño, shot in Bacolod and is in 95% Hiligaynon dialogue with english subtitles. It the most unique entry this year as I heard from people and critics. as it revolves around humor, love and food. The behavior of the crowd in CCP really gives me goosebumps. claps, cheers, woos and horrendous laughter throughout the movie. For the first 4 days this movie was always SOLD OUT. But due to the overwhelming public appeal, they started issuing more seat tickets. Imagine napuno ang CCP main theatre kada gab-i!!:cheers:This would be the biggest upset against Jay.

3. 100 - a movie starring mylene dizon, tessie tomas and eugene domingo about a dying woman who makes a list of 100 things to do before she dies. The biggest tearjerker of the festival. to the crowd and the majority, it was a contender for the top prize but for critics, they call it "an adapatation-style" of the Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman. Daw mahibi ko sa sine nga ini!

Awards night na sa Sunday so keep your fingers crossed!!!!! Go Namets!!!^^

:lol: .. But i think this will be good for Bacolod's upscale crowd. These peeps just wanted a little bit of exclusivity. BTw @Grande, how'd you know na "pa girls" ang mga sa Fitness?

^^ OT lang: Coz what i understand when you say "pa girls", its a guy who's dressing up the way girls do. I think nobody does that at any fitness centers and this in particular at Fitness First. And its not allowed as well. So how can you say these peeps are "pa girls" so to speak? Not unless you're one of their kind.

I think the term is "pa men" or "pa-mhin or paminta"...ha ha ha haha.....pa macho macho and pa sexy sexy kay gali macho man ang gina lantaw...ha ha hah aha....yes i totally agree Fitness First is the place. My friend who works there enjoys ogling and drooling the whole day. ha ha ha ha :lol::lol:

^^:lol::lol: how would you know if the person kept on staring at you?...not unless ga lantaw ka man sa iya if thats the case e :) hahahahaha

bantayanay gali....ha ha hahahaha...dakpanay sin-o una tulok...ha ha ha haha....anyway if this kind of gym opens in Bacolod, isn't it great?! Finally we will be tapping into the "denial/closet" pink market of the city. FYI these closet pinks are undeniably one of the highest earning people here in our country. They fill up our malls, boutiques, bars, restos, gyms, cinemas, resorts, etc. with their money! It just depends on the proper timing here for "other" Bacoleños to "really" accept them in society.:cheers::banana::banana::banana:

Mayor, SP thank Pacquiao for help
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

The Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod yesterday passed a unanimous resolution thanking Philippine boxing champ Manny Pacquiao for donating P1 million for the typhoon victims of Bacolod City.

Mayor Evelio Evelio Leonardia said he thanks Pacquiao for responding to his request to help the typhoon victims in Bacolod City.

The mayor issued Executive Order No. 26 yesterday declaring today as “Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Pacquiao Day” in Bacolod City.

Pacquiao, an adopted son of Bacolod, will be conferred the “Bugal sang Bacolod” Award by Leonardia during a program in front of City Hall this afternoon.

Pacquiao is the first Filipino Lightweight Division Champion (WBC) and the first Asian to reign as world champion in four different weight divisions (Flyweight, Super Bantamweight, Super Featherweight, and Lightweight divisions).

On July 17, 2008, the mayor issued Executive Order No. 27 conferring the award on Pacquiao in recognition of the honor and pride he has bestowed upon the people of Bacolod by his perseverance, discipline, courage, religious devotion, sportsmanship and triumph, amidst the great difficulties and hardships he endured early in his career and in his life.

The Executive Order said Pacquiao has, in the world of sports, consistently exemplified the best of the Filipino people, giving the whole nation honor and a reason to be proud.

By his grit, discipline and determination he has proven beyond dispute that he is indeed the best “pound for pound” boxer in the world today and rightly declared as the “People’s Champion,” it said.

His triumphs, popularity and wealth has not distanced him from the grace of God, for it rather strengthened his religious devotion and amplified his already generous heart, it added.

He holds his sister and brothers in Bacolod very close to his heart and translated his compassion and concern by sharing his blessing with the victims of Typhoon Frank in the city, giving P1 million in assistance to them, the Executive Order also said.

Pacquiao will join a motorcade around the city today starting 3 p.m. at the Goldenfields Commercial Complex to Araneta St. – Lizares Avenue – Amelia Street – Hernaez – Mabini – Galo – Hilado – Burgos – Lopez Jaena – San Juan – east road of SM City – Bac-up 1 – San Juan –Gonzaga – Gatuslao – Luzuriaga – Bonifacio – Gonzaga – Hernaez and will end up at City Hall where a simple program will be held.

The program will be followed by a fireworks display sponsored by Robinson’s Place Bacolod.*CGS

New abattoir to open this month – operator

The Bacolod City Slaughterhouse in Brgy. Handumanan, Bacolod City will be ready to operate before the end of July, Ernie Urbano, lawyer of AVM Bernardo Engineering, said yesterday.

Urbano said he considers the facility the “biggest and most beautiful” in Western Visayas. He also said it was issued an Environmental Compliance Certificate by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources on July 4.

The facility will assure the people of Bacolod of safe, clean and quality meat, he said. It will also help Bacolod become a prime tourist destination and assure tourists that they will get safe and quality food when they go to the restaurants and resorts in the city, he added.

Once operational, the slaughterhouse will boost the image of the city as the Cleanest and Greenest, Urbano also said.

He said they have applied for a Double A accreditation which they hope will later be converted into Triple A facility. They are also applying for power connection with the Central Negros Electric Cooperative, he added.

Urbano said AVM Bernardo has invested P54 million for the rehabilitation and operation of the facility. Based on the contract entered into between the city and the contractor, the facility will revert back to the city government after 20 years, he said.

Urbano said the operation of the new slaughterhouse will give the city a savings of P10 million a year. He said the city is now spending about P6 to P7 million a year in subsidizing the operation of the old slaughterhouse in Brgy. 35.

Once the facility becomes operational the city can use the amount saved for other worthwhile projects. On top of that, the city is estimated to earn about P3 million in rental and regulatory fees, he said.

Urbano also assured the meat vendors of “zero pilferage” once the facility operates, because it will be equipped with surveillance cameras to monitor the operation of their workers.

“We encourage hog raisers outside of Bacolod to have their animals slaughtered here so the city can earn more money in terms of regulatory fees,” Urbano said. Only accredited meat vans can deliver meat to the markets, he said.

Urbano said the slaughterhouse is capable of slaughtering 75 hogs and 20 cattles per hour and will be open 24 hours a day. It can slaughter between 700 to 800 heads a day and they can export meat to Manila and other provinces. They will also put a dressing plant for poultry products in the facility, he added.

Urbano said AVM Bernardo has put up 31 slaughterhouses in the country.

Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the slaughterhouse will definitely be a major factor in health, hygiene and sanitation in Bacolod. “As this is going be the biggest and most modern slaughterhouse in Western Visayas, we expect our meat to be safe, the quality will also improve because it will be fresh and not adulterated by human intervention,” he said.

Leonardia said the facility will also become an attraction for other local governments. It will be a model and a good destination for Lakbay-Aral groups, he said. Over all, its operation will improve the quality of life in Bacolod, he added.

City Veterinarian Dr. Adelo Daroy yesterday thanked Leonardia for the new slaughterhouse of the city since the old facility can no longer serve the needs of the people. He said he hopes Bacolod will become a prime tourist destination in the years to come. They can now guarantee tourists healthy and quality meat with the operation of the new facility, he added.*CGS

Romance buds between Jacko and Cassie, who despite the differences are bonded by their common love for food.

Direk Jay Abello and Ryan Diño talk about their Negrense film Namets!

"Namets is a movie about food and the food culture in Negros," says Jay, a proud Negrense, who also directed last year's Ligaw Liham. Like Ligaw Liham, it was shot entirely in Negros but this time, in Hiligaynon dialect. The film stars top Negrense actors except for TV Host and model Angel Jacob who had to learn to speak Ilonggo. "When Jay called me offering me a role in an Ilonggo film, I said yes right away," says Angel. "We recorded the dialogue in our iPods so she can practice it before she goes to Bacolod. She did it naman. She's now an adopted daughter of Bacolod," shares Ryan Diño, the production manager.

Direk Jay Abello with the main cast

I asked Jay where the concept came from and he gladly related how everything started. "It's from the insane world of Vince Groyon. He said, hey let's do a film na fun. Wala lang... Fun to do, very simple, and very Ilonggo. I'll do it. I'll write you a script... Basta it will be in the dialect.. and I said game!" Vince, who has done several award winning short films, novel and short stories, also hails from the same province. But according to Jay, the script Vince originally came up was far from the goody goody story of Namets!."We came up with the 'Bacolod Scandal!' Haha. Yun yung lumabas. It was a sex film. Very very nice," Jay relates. "And then Cinemalaya deadline came up. And I talked to Vince, this wont get picked. It's too 'sex'." Because both wanted to participate in the film festival, they agreed to revise the story. And since their primary aim is to write a story about Negros, what could be a better topic than it's strongest character: food.

Namets

A scene from the film

Originally, Namets! didn't get in the list of feature length finalists. It was only last Febuary 19 when Laurice Guillen called Jay to replace another filmmaker who backed out. "We barely had 3 months to finish the film. That was such a challenge," Jay remarks.

Problems didn't end there for Jay. "The toughest part for me was staffing this whole film. When you shoot in Bacolod, it's a very small community of artists, and every summer there's this workshop by Senor Peque Gallaga. Everybody joins the workshops. You have to shoot before or after the workshops because the good people are either teaching in the workshop or attending the workshop. Because we were told February, we couldn't shoot March. It is either we shoot during the workshop or after, which is May." And since the film must be completed before the competition, he decided to already start production. "I am very proud. My LP (Line Producer), PM (Production Manager) and AD (Associate Director) were all firstimers, and they pulled it off. Talagang grabe, gapang. What they had naman was grabeng passion."

Namets
http://www.clickthecity.com/img2/articles/CTC-3310-image11.jpg
Cast and crew of Namets!

Since food is central to the story, producing the film also proved to be hard. "When you deal with food... parang ano yan e... parang diva. Big star. You can't hurry it. You can't let it wait. You have to light it properly...Very very tricky siya." Good thing there's their food consultant Chef Juan Miguel Gaston, one of the most successful in the province."We're very very lucky because, not only he is a chef, he is also a film buff. When we talk about our scenes, he knows what we needed. If he weren't a chef, he would be a filmmaker. He was so into it," shares Jay.

Contrary to most of the filmmakers I have interviewed so far, who consider location hunting as their biggest dilemma, Jay shares how they were blessed in this aspect. "We were given all the locations we wanted. And since we're doing a film about Negros, we had the support of the community. We were given it for free. Dun panalo yung Namets eh. Something you cannot shoot with an indie budget."

Why should people watch Namets!? "If you wanna read subtitles then watch our film, Haha! It's the date movie for this year's Cinemalaya. It's the movie with no angst. So if you guys want to have fun, come out magaang... and hungry, watch our film." I don't know with you guys but to me that seemed a pretty good offer so I'll definitely watch. To those interested, catch Namets! on these dates:

Just took some photos of L'Fisher hotel for their Website, I ask them about their expansion, they said they will ad additional 80 Rooms, their expansion building would only be 5 to 6 floors which they said will include an indoor swimming pool, but d pa raw sure, they didn't give me the renderings yet but hopefully maka ask ko liwat.

5 to 6 floors is just fine and an additional 80 rooms is like they built another hotel. great.:banana::banana:

Hello mga kuya~
Tapos na exams ko, woohoo!

Anyway, I've seen Bacolod Executive Inn is doing a facelift construction now, but it's still business as usual. Nakit-ko kagina si Pacquiao  Of course, our dear mayor was at his side holding the belt.

Oh yeah, I was wondering if our photographers here would be willing to release their works via a Wikipedia-friendly license at Flick (CC-BY or CC-BY-SA), you'd still get the credit for all the work. I've noticed kasi that since most tourists would visit first Wikipedia to know more about the place (even though that most articles there are not that reliable), it's still an effective medium to boost the city's tourism. May I also know your respective Flickr gallery pages? Thanks~~

Camella Communities opens Bacolod office

CAMELLA Communities, a Vista Land company, inaugurated its office at the ground floor of Salvacion Center at 27th Lacson Street last July 5.

Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and Camella Communities general manager for Bacolod Tessie Lanot led the ribbon-cutting ceremony while Rev. Father Felix Pasquin officiated the blessing.

Camella Communities will officially launch its first Bacolod development project, Camella Meridian on July 18. Expected to grace the event is Senate President Manuel Villar as guest of honor.

Vista Land & Landscapes Inc. operates through its wholly-owned subsidiaries namely Camella, Crown Asia, Brittany and Camella Communities, each addressing the housing needs across all income segments in the country.

Lanot said the Camella Meridian development project is a 27-hectare subdivision strategically located in barangay Mandalagan and is envisioned to be the new metropolitan hub in Bacolod.

Camella Meridian boasts of an Italian architectural theme for the whole subdivision and individual houses.

"We have a wide range of home models of different sizes and prices to suit the investment preferences of each client," Lanot said. "Camella Meridian offers affordable and worry-free, house-and-lot package. With down payment of only 20 percent of the total price, our client can have functional and aesthetically-appealing home after five months."

Interested clients may visit their office or website at www.vistaland.com.ph or call (034) 4352734 to 36.

This is probably the ugliest Lopue's ever. Runner-up would be Lopue's Victorias. Lopue's East was aesthetically pleasing, but they added the car park in the front and the rear addition doesn't complement the original building. The Lopue family should really think of getting good architects. Most of the existing malls and supermarket's that they own are difficult on the eyes.

Sugarland really needs to compete with other hotels now. With the recent boom in hotel openings in Bacolod (Sylvia, Planta, renovation of Bacolod Exec Inn, and the u/c East Point Hotel), they'd have to be more innovative. :)

Good thing they're also moving forward.

hehehe!!! maybe they felt like that if they wont make a move, they will be left behind. Sugarland is already part of the History of Bacolod Being one of the empires during its own era...but with the opening of L'fisher and the airport issue before, i think they lose track with its momentum to be the best Hotel in the City of smiles. Now, they are moving forward. they may not be the best Hotel in the city today but at least, they still look good, outside and inside :)

Pacquiao willing to help
Ba-Neg softball teams
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Filipino boxing icon and Bacolod City’s adopted son Manny Pacquiao yesterday said he is willing to give assistance to the softball little leaguers from Bacolod-Negros team who will represent the country in the World Series in the United States next month.

However, the boxing champ said he can only give so much as he also needs to save some of his purse money from boxing for the future of his kids and his family.

Pacquiao, who was given a hero’s welcome yesterday by the city government, faced the local media in a press conference held after his motorcade.

Asked if he is ready to grant the wish of his mother, Dionisia, to see him retire from boxing now, Pacquiao said he asked that he be given a little more time since he is still strong. He said he is concerned that there will be no one to give the country honor if he retires soon.

Pacquiao said he enjoys boxing and has been in the sport since he was 12 years old. He is turning 30 in December, he said, and the country will know if ever he decides to hang his gloves. “Abangan (watch for it),” he said.

Considered as the greatest boxer of his genre, Pacquiao epitomizes the resiliency and fighting spirit of the Filipino nation, boxing aficionados observed.

School children, professionals and bystanders lined up the streets yesterday from the old Bacolod Airport -- where the helicopter he boarded from Iloilo City landed – to downtown area to get a glimpse of their boxing hero.

His June 28 dethronement of World Boxing Confederation lightweight champion David Diaz reaffirmed his position in the boxing world as the best fighter pound-for-pound.

As a source of inspiration among Filipinos, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo appointed him as the Philippines’ special envoy to the Beijing Olympics next month and designated him to carry the country’s flag during the parade of delegates.*CGS

P.5 B allotted for light bulb conversion (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080716112&type=2)

By Paolo Romero
Thursday, July 17, 2008
President Arroyo launched yesterday a P500-million program that aims to jump-start a massive replacement of electricity-hungry incandescent bulbs in households and work places with energy-efficient compact fluorescent lamps or CFLs.

Mrs. Arroyo led representatives from the youth, government, non-government organizations and religious sectors in the symbolic lighting of CFLs at the launching of “Palit Ilaw” or change light bulb program at the Philippine International Convention Center.

CFLs use about 75 percent less energy than incandescent bulbs and lasts 10 times longer.

Mrs. Arroyo said the program would start with the replacement of incandescent bulbs with CFLs in government offices, public schools, state colleges and universities, government hospitals, and public areas.

She said funding for the project came from value-added tax revenues from increased oil prices.

She said “Palit Ilaw” is part of the Department of Energy’s SWITCH program aimed at mobilizing Filipinos in reducing energy and fuel consumption by at least 10 percent this year.

The program will be launched in the provinces in the coming days so that “all Filipinos would be aware of the importance of energy conservation,” she said.

“National fuel conservation is now entrenched as a first principle of statecraft. All government agencies have to reduce their energy bills by 10 percent,” Mrs. Arroyo said.

She also announced the government is now ready to shift into high gear its bio-fuel energy program as the first step to end the country’s dependence on imported oil.

She made the announcement at the Forum on Alternative Fuel for Public Transport at the Philippine Trade and Training Center (PTTC) in Pasay City.

The President said she will inspect starting July 21 the 1,800 hectares of lands across the country planted to jatropha under the government’s jatropha propagation program.

To date, 900 hectares have been planted to jatropha in Tamlang Valley in Negros Oriental; 500 hectares in Fort Magsaysay, Nueva Ecija; 200 hectares in Camarines Sur; 100 hectares in General Santos City; 60 hectares in Ara, Palawan; 40 hectares in Cagayan de Oro City; 14 hectares in Bohol; and five hectares in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental.
She said because of the energy efficiency programs initiated by her administration, the country is now 56 percent energy self-sufficient, the highest energy self-sufficiency rating in its history.

She said that aside from alternative sources of fuel, the government will continue to promote the use of natural gas for transport; geothermal steam, wind mills like those already operational in Batanes and Bangui, Ilocos Sur, and solar power for electricity.

“Let me assure our people of one thing, your government shall continue to harness all the resources at our command to help ordinary Filipino families pressured by cost and calamity at the same time. We continue to build a better tomorrow,” she said.

HR firm ExcelAsia expands to more cities

By Lawrence Casiraya
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 10:57am (Mla time) 06/26/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- Excel Asia is setting up offices in Baguio and Bacolod, anticipating further expansion of business process outsourcing (BPO) firms in these cities.
Excel Asia provides recruitment and training services to more than 30 multinational firms, primarily call centers and BPO operators. It also provides executive search and business consultancy services to its clients.

The company holds office in Makati City (Metro Manila) and Cebu City in the South. It also has a satellite office in Alabang (Muntinlupa City), also a hub for BPO operators.

"For our expansion plans this year, we have earmarked Alabang -- this time for a fully featured facility -- Baguio and Bacolod, as strategic sites for our new offices," said ExcelAsia president Rita Trillo-Ugarte in a statement.

According to her, most of the company's clients are constantly looking for expansion opportunities in emerging BPO hubs outside of Metro Manila.

"We want to support their human resource recruitment and management programs by being in these places, and getting first-hand information on the manpower supply in each of them," Trillo-Ugarte said.

Excel Asia also provides training services for "near hires" or applicants who didn't qualify, and those who have received vouchers under the government's "Training for Work" program.

The company said it has trained some 400 to 500 near-hires every month last year and is hoping to double that number this year anticipating rapid expansion in emerging hubs like Baguio and Bacolod.
PeopleSupport and Sitel have set up facilities in Baguio (located north of Manila). Teletech and Convergys, meanwhile, have opened offices in Bacolod (Negros Occidental).
Both cities are certified BPO hubs and are being promoted as investment destinations by the Commission on Information and Communications Technology.

2 banks open branches in Kabankalan City

Two banks, City Savings Bank and United Coconut Planters Bank Gen, recently opened branches in Kabankalan City , a development affirming the conducive business climate in the city, the mayor's office said in a press release.

CSB branch manager Emilio Lopez Lagman said they see a bright future for the bank in Kabankalan.

Imperial Appliance Plaza from Iloilo City will also open a branch in their two-storey building in Guanzon Street , the press release also said.

City Administrator Higino Sixto Garaygay said the influx of investors indicates a business-friendly Kabankalan recently named as the Most Competitive City in Western Visayas and fourth in the Visayas in an annual survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center, the press release added.*

is it just the ground floor migo or the whole building that will be leased out to a bank? the building i suppose is equipped with an automatic delivery system (is it the right term) for medicines and other supplies. are they gonna transfer it to the MAB?

they called that pneumatic system, or tubing system.

Yes migs, its also in my mind that they designed the building basing from its location..knowing silay is the paris of negros, they would like to have a touch of spanish accent on the building..but I don't think that the building is approppriate to be design like that..They must also consider that they are going to construct a department store and not a government center..

the building came out to be a "trying hard" architectural design...they could have made it even better...

PIA Press Release
2008/07/18

Ethanol fuel available in Negros Occidental by yearend

Negros Occ. (18 July) -- The delivery of the country's first locally-produced sugarcane fuel grade ethanol by year-end will mark a new era in the government's quest for energy self-sufficiency using alternative source of energy.

San Carlos Bionergy Inc., the country's first integrated ethanol distillery and power cogeneration plant is scheduled to officially present to the public its first liters of ethanol during the fourth quarter of this year. The plant has the capacity to mill 2,000TCD of sugarcane to produce 125, 000 liters of ethanol per day and approximately 8MW of power, according to its website.

The ethanol it produces is seen to contribute significantly to the country's total requirement for a 5 % gasoline-ethanol blend.

Believed by some to give life to the uncertain rewards from sugar planting, alternative energy prime mover Sen. Miguel Zubiri predicts the revival of the old glory days of Negros Occ. when sugar planters reaped huge profits from their produce and gained national prominence for their wealth and classy lifestyles.

The entry of the Bioenergy in San Carlos City, 144 kilometers north of the province' capital Bacolod City, is a result of President G. Macapagal arroyo's aggressive moves to entice foreign investors in bringing clean energy technology into the country that signals the government's shift from fossil fuel to sustainable power using indigenous materials.

In her 2005 State of the Nation Address (SONA), Pres. Arroyo called on congress to pass the legislation encouraging renewable and indigenous energy. The following year, 2006, Republic Act No. 9637 or the "Biofuels Law" was signed on July 24.

Recently, Pres. Arroyo announced the country is now ready to shift into higher gear its bio-fuel energy program in a bid to end the country's dependence to imported crude oil.

Along with the development of other alternative sources of energy is the long- term plan to venture into extracting fuel from Jatropha curcas (kasla in the Hiligaynon dialect). The president is expected to inspect 1,800 hectares of Jatropha planted in the different parts of the country including a 5,000 hectare in Cadiz City, this province. (PIA-LOL)
