Four firms qualify for incentives under IPPBy Ma. Elisa P. Osorio
Sunday, July 20, 2008

The Board of Investments (BOI) has extended its tax incentive package to four projects with combined investments of P98 million.

The projects qualified for fiscal and no fiscal perks as they are the list of preffered economic sectors under the government’s Investment Priorities Plan (IPP).

Leading the new investors is Alunan Realty Co., which will build a low cost, mass housing project worth P62.45 million.

The housing project, named Residence Royale, will involve the development of a 9.6-hectare land and the construction of 505 low-cost housing units.

The firm’s application for registration was approved as a new developer of mass housing projects. The Residence Royale project, which will start in August, will employ 94 people.

Meanwhile, exporter High Quality Knitting Mills Inc. will also be given tax benefits for its P14.27 million investment to manufacture knitted fabrics at a capacity of 5.46 million kilos per year.

The knitted fabrics will be sold to various garments manufacturers and exporters producing T-shirts, sportswear, underwear and other garments.

The 100-percent Filipino owned firm, located in Valenzuela, will provide jobs to 70 people.

Transnational Uyeno Maritime Inc., on the other hand, is a new operator of an oil tanker vessel. It will employ 25 people at full capacity.

The shipping corporation, 60 percent Filipino owned, will put up P19.37 million in investments to operate a new 5,000-ton double hulled vessel tagged as M/T Sunrise Sampaguita.

The vessel will transport petroleum products from the refineries and terminals to oil depots and bulk plants along coastal routes all over the country.

Softshore Global Solutions Inc. meanwhile, is a new ICT export service firm that will develop software and design for its technical and engineering clients.

'Pacman' tours Bacolod
By Gil Alfredo Severino

BOXING sensation Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao will switch on and inaugurate Bacolod's newest traffic light at the corners of Hilado and Burgos streets around 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

This is the sixth traffic light installed under the administration of Mayor Evelio Leonardia, bringing the number of traffic lights in Bacolod City to a total of 12.

After the ceremonies, Leonardia will give the 'Pacman' a tour of the New Government Center.

The Filipino boxing icon arrived in Bacolod on Thursday and was treated to a motorcade and a program in his honor at the Bacolod City Hall grounds. Secretary to the Mayor Goldwyn Nifras also read Executive Order (EO) 26, declaring July 17, 2008 as the 'Manny Pacquiao Day' in the city, a plaque of which was personally handed by Leonardia to the Pacman, along with a Masskara mask as token.

Nifras also read EO 27, conferring to Pacquiao the title of 'Bugal sang Bacolod'. Certificates of appreciation were also given to Jinkee Pacquiao, Wakee Salud, Buboy Fernandez, Rey Golingan, Lito Camo and Cris Aquino.

The 'adopted son of Bacolod', meanwhile, offered a song to his fans in the city and later had a press conference with the local media at the City Mayor's Office.

'Pacman' on Thursday braved the rain in a motorcade along the city's major streets, greeting thousands of waving admirers lined up to give him a hero's welcome.

The motorcade started at the Casino Filipino Hotel where Pacquiao took a two-hour rest and ended at the Bacolod City Hall grounds where the program in his honor was held but was cut short because of the heavy downpour.

Pacquiao thanked the Bacolod residents for the warmest welcome given to him. "I am here with only one purpose in my heart and that is to be with the typhoon victims of Bacolod City. I come here not for anything else but help our needy brothers and sisters (igsoon). Please accept my thanks."

On Friday, Pacquiao will personally visit barangays Tangub and Banago and the Bays Center to distribute one million-peso worth of goodies estimated to benefit 6,000 households affected by typhoon Frank.

Leonardia said Pacquiao's cash donation and its conversion to packages was coursed through and managed by the Bacolod Airport Lions Club.

One of Pacquiao's close advisers, Rex 'Wackee' Salud, told the Bacolod media that while he has no knowledge on how much Pacquiao had shelled out as cash assistance to other provinces in Mindanao and the Panay provinces, "Bacolod City evidently is very special because he will personally attend to the distribution of gifts."

Salud also announced that Pacman's next fight would be on November 16 against Humberto Sotto, although Pacquiao has yet to sign the contract. "So nothing is confirmed yet until Pacquiao signs the contract but the schedule and opponent are sure and as planned." (With Press release)

EDC vows to preserve Mt Kanlaon’s biodiversity
By Donnabelle L. Gatdula
Monday, July 21, 2008

The Lopez-owned Energy Development Corp. has vowed to preserve the ecosystem and to maintain the biodiversity of Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park (MKNP).

This as various environmentalists threatened to seek legal remedies to stop EDC from entering the MKNP to continue its drilling activities for the Northern Negros geothermal Power Project.

Green Watch Philippines spokesman Donato Flordeliza Jr. told reporters over the weekend that they are seeking a 15-week moratorium before EDC enters the park to discuss alternative solutions to the power problem of Negros Occidental aside from the NNGPP.

“We have requested for a 15-week moratorium of the project so we can beef up entry of investments from foreign investors so we do not have to use government resources to find an answer to the province’s power shortage,” Flordeliza said.

Flordeliza said if the call for the halting of the project will not be heeded, they would be forced to file a temporary restraining order (TRO) against EDC.

A group of Filipino-American investors, Flordeliza said, has signified interest to put up a wind power project in Negros which could be a better option than NNGPP.

“This project will not call for any extensive damage of our forest. We cannot just sacrifice our environment just to have power. There are other alternative power sources that we could tap like wind power,” he said.

EDC has been given a go signal by the local government of Negros Occidental to enter the MKNP prompting environmentalists to revive their opposition to the project.

Negros Occidental Governor Isidro Zayco signed a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with EDC last July 17 for the implementation of the company’s comprehensive environmenta and watershed management plan for the buffer zone.

The plan, based on EDC’s 32-year experience in environment management and geothermal technology, was approved way back in 2007 by the Mt. Kanlaon Park board.

EDC president and CEO Paul Aquino has given his assurance that EDC will live up to its commitment to comply with the strict conditions that were stipulated in the MOA.

To start the project, EDC has already established a nursery in Bago City that has 14 premium endemic species including the first almagica plantation in the Philippines.

Since it started operating in February 2007, the Northern Negros Geothermal Production Field has been sourcing its power outside the Mt. Kanlaon buffer zone.

The Mt. Kanlaon Park Act of 2001 or Republic Act 9154 has allocated a buffer zone for geothermal development but the company has delayed the use of the buffer zone for as long as it could .

EDC tried to extract all of the power from outside the buffer zone but adverse reactions in the geothemal reservoir were observed after one year of operation.

The EDC had already poured in some P7 billion to P 8 billion for the development of the NNGPP.

Due to the difficulty in entering the Mt Kanlaon Park, EDC was able to produce only 15 to 18 MW from expected 49 MW capacity of the NNGPP.

“The decline in steam production was assessed to be due to the clogging of the wells by calcite minerals found in the current geothermal field,” Aquino said.

Aquino said the clogging prevents the wells from releasing the steam from its very source underneath the earth. Calcification is a technical problem that is not attributable to or within the reasonable control of EDC.

WASTE DISPOSAL
DENR to conduct write shop in BacolodBY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod Councilor Greg Gasataya yesterday said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources will conduct a two-day write shop in Bacolod City on July 23-24, to help the city come up with a waste disposal facility.

Gasataya had written to DENR regional director Bienvenido Lipayon on July 14, 2008 requesting for technical assistance for the preparation of closure and rehabilitation plan of the city’s existing and old dumpsites, in compliance of Republic Act 9003, or the Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Gasataya, chairman of the Bacolod City Clean and Green Coordinating Action team, said the city was given by the DENR a couple of months to come up with a waste disposal facility.

This is the next step after the city purchased the property in Brgy. Felisa, Bacolod City, he said.

The write shop will be attended by representatives of the Department of Public Services, City Engineer’s Office, Environment and Natural Resources Office and the City Planning and Development Office, he added.

Gasataya said that, after the write shop, they will know what the requirements are and how much will be needed to put up a waste disposal facility. The funding component will be evaluated based on the requirements, he said.

Under R.A. 9003, local governments were given six months to come up with a waste disposal facility, Gasataya said.*CGS

Bacolod softball team gets warm welcome after China win

By YASMIN PASCUAL-DORMIDO
ABS-CBN, Bacolod

The triumphant softball team of the Domingo Lacson National High School (DLNHS) was given a warm welcome by the local government of Bacolod City and their supporters following their successful stint at the Asia Pacific tournament in Guangzhou, China.

DLNHS principal Esteban Albacea said his school’s 14-16 Seniors softball team members are happy to be home.

Their victory in China entitled the team to carry the Bacolod-Negros banner to the Little League World Series championship in the US next week.

Albacea said their winnings will be used to pay for expenses of their junior softbelles who will see action in Lower Sussex, Delaware on August 3.

The team will rest a while before starting to raise funds to augment their airfare funds for upcoming international meets.

Albacea said the junior and senior teams still need at least P1.2 million for fares and other expenses.

Included in the financing are the rest of the members of the Education and Training Center School 1 and 2, 11-12 Major Little Leaguers and the 13-14 junior team members.

Albacea said the team's trip to China was made possible through the collective effort of various agencies and offices, including the Philippine Sports Commission, the governor’s office, Sangguniang Panlalawigan and the Sangguniang Kabataan Provincial Federation.

The Major Little Leaguers will face champions from qualifying tournaments in east, west, southwest, south and central America, Canada, Europe and Latin America in Portland, Oregon from August 7-13.

The DLNHS 13-13 junior squad, meanwhile, will play in Kirkland, Washington from August 10-16. The Seniors, meanwhile will have their World Series competition in Lower Sussex from August 3-9.

Fil-Am group eyes wind power project

By MYRNA M. VELASCO

A Filipino-American investor group is exploring the possibility of pouring in investment for a wind power facility in Negros Occidental.

According to Larry Asera, who heads an investment company from California, they have uncovered the potential of Negros as a "high-frontier area for wind farm opportunities in the country.
The group headed by Asera has been scouring prospects of setting up a wind power project that would shore up the country’s renewable energy capacity – possibly a venture that would match the 25-megawatt Bangui wind farm project in Ilocos Norte.

Asera noted that his group already ventured into a 6.67 megawatt solar power project in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, hence, it has been counting on this track record for its planned expanded foray into renewable energy development.

As to the wind potential of Negros, Asera noted "this is one of the greatest wind areas. There should be people like us investing here to provide clean wind power…we’re willing to invest here.

He added that Negros has "the same wind gradient and the potential in terms of amount of power and amount of megawatts you can generate," if compared to the pilot site in Ilocos.

The company said it is currently exploring for a viable site, in which the installation of wind farms will not draw much opposition from the host community.

Asera sounded off that "a serious obstacle facing the wind industry is public opposition reflecting concern over the visibility and noise of wind turbines and their effects on wilderness areas."

He added that while turbines will just normally occupy a small fraction of land, wind power development have tendency to aggravate land conflicts.

"In forested areas, it may mean clearing trees and cutting roads, a prospect that is likely to generate controversy," Asera stressed.

These dilemmas, at hand, he assured will all be weighed seriously before finalizing their project blueprint for the proposed wind power project in Negros.

Mga Migo, Someone from Covergys told me that its ok to have competitors beside Sanparq, it will be like the ones that you saw in Manila or Makati that in one facility there are multiple IT companies residing, and the whole building of Convergys will only be occupied by Time Warner's Road Runner, If another account will enter, it will be placed in Convergys second facility, where?, just beside it!! That's why the clearing of Sanparq 2 is being fast tracked so that it can accomodate the demands of their clients. Btw Convergys is not afraid (daw) of PeopleSupport...even Etelecare..:) Hmmmmmm..

EDC starts cutting trees in buffer zone
BISHOP, GREENWATCH BACK TRO BID
BY CARLA GOMEZ
;
The Energy Development Corp. yesterday began cutting trees in the Mt. Kanlaon Natural Park buffer zone to pave the way for geothermal exploration, even as Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra and Greenwatch Philippines backed the bid for court action to stop it.

EDC spokesman Joey Higgins said the cutting of trees began after a provincial government Oversight Monitoring and Compliance Committee headed by Board Member Mae Javellana visited the area Saturday to inspect the trees to be cut.

Representatives of the oversight committee and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources were present during the cutting of trees, Javellana said.

The DENR has granted EDC permission to cut 4,213 trees in the buffer zone, Higgins said.

Of the 4,213 trees to be cut, only .08 percent are large trees, while 5.8 percent are medium sized and 93.4 percent are small, Higgins said.

EDC has said it needs to tap more geothermal energy in the buffer zone to boost the production of its power plant in Mailum, Bago, to meet a “power shortage” in Negros Occidental.

Javellana said trees in the buffer zone that cannot be cut have been marked and EDC has made revisions to avoid more big trees.

Japanese envoy given
‘friendship key’ to city

Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura visited Bacolod City yesterday and was given the “Friendship Key” by Mayor Evelio Leonardia during their meeting at the L’Fisher Hotel as a symbol of welcome and goodwill.

Katsura, who said he was honored by the very warm welcome given to him despite the short notice of his visit, said he will try his best to enhance the relationship between Japan and the Philippines, especially with Bacolod City.

He arrived with Shingekazu Sakunaga, First Secretary and Consul General of the Consular Office of Japan in Cebu, a city hall press release said.

This is the first time Katsura has visited Bacolod. “I am impressed by the Philippines’ rapid development in its economy,” he said.

Katsura and Sakunaga also visited the new Government Center of Bacolod and Leonardia said he is the first ambassador to do so.

Bacolod officials present at the presentation of the Key to the ambassador were Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Greg Gasataya, Dindo Ramos, Bobby Rojas, Alex Paglumotan, Al Victor Espino, Napoleon Cordova, Catalino Alisbo and Celia Flor.

Katsura also gave a token of appreciation to the city government officials.

Meanwhile, Leonardia said that a good relationship with Japan can make Bacolod City move forward faster.

“I hope this visit will evolve into an arrangement for official ties between Japan and Bacolod,” he said. “With our desire to move very fast forward, we should be in a direct link with Japan. I hope this visit will further cement this vision,” Leonardia also said.*

AAB holds Bacolod group exhibit
The Art Association of Bacolod-Negros celebrated its 33rd anniversary with a group exhibit at the Negros Museum that opened Monday with Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia and Silay Mayor Jose Montelibano as guests of honor.

The show titled “Padayon” runs for two weeks.

Leonardia committed a portion of the government property at the reclamation area in Bacolod City to the AAB-Negros as his contribution to the anniversary.

Montelibano said he believes that if local artists are encouraged and given the support, Negros will be able to produce great masters like Jose Joya. He also challenged Leonardia to commission the AAB-Negros artists to put their paintings at the new government center as a way of helping the local artists.

Leonardia said many have praised the government center and that even Rex “Wakee” Salud and Canadian Michael Koontz who came with Philippine boxing champ Manny Pacquiao, said it is the most beautiful city hall in the Philippines today.

“When we talk about our culture, some may say we are ‘tikalon (proud)’, but I think we just have ‘taste’…including in the field of art. We are not boasting, but comparatively speaking, in the field of arts we are relatively better off than many other provinces,” he said.

Leonardia said the city can apportion a part of its lot at the reclamation area for the purpose of the AAB-Negros. But since it will involve a contract, he will need to get the support of the Sangguniang Panlunsgod, he said. However, he said he is confident that the SP will be with him if he makes that push for the city.

Meanwhile, Montelibano said they are planning to put up an artists’ village in Silay like the one in Bali. If they can acquire a 5-hectare lot, they will also work for the establishment of a cultural center there, he said.

Montelibano said they have commissioned artist Charlie Co to do a painting at the Bacolod-Silay Airport, which was funded by the late Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon. He is also asking Pagcor to fund another painting for the airport to be done by the artists of Silay and Negros, he said.

Montelibano also challenged AAB-Negros president Nunelucio Alvarado to conduct an art workshop in Silay in November. “Let’s support our local artists. It’s one way of helping them develop art in Negros,” he said.

The AAB was founded on July 4, 1975 by a group of Negrense artists led by Edgardo “Budot” Lizares.*CGS

Bago silk trade thrives with higher production

Silk production under the Organization for Industrial, Spiritual and Cultural Advancement-Bago Training Center in Negros Occidental continues to thrive as higher production allows it cope with the growing local demand for silk.

Marketing officer Myrna Ricarte said they are now hitting an average production of 200 to 300 kilos per month sufficient to supply the monthly demand of between 200 and 400 kilos.

“We now have enough silk yarn stocks. Months before, we couldn’t cope with the orders,” she said.

For instance, when they received an order of 150 to 200 kilos before, they can only supply 80 to 100 kilos. “We then spread out the supply so we can provide to most of the buyers,” Ricarte said.

They sell silk to buyers in Panay, particularly, Iloilo and Kalibo, Palawan and Manila, at about P220 per kilogram.

Bago City silk is the Philippines’ model “One Town, One Product” item, according to the Department of Trade and Industry.

Ricarte said they now have enough production with more farmers are involved in silk production as their livelihood project.

OISCA-Bago Training Center, situated in Brgy. Tabunan, now has its own silkworm breeding station, inaugurated in August last year, and it no longer imports silkworm eggs from Japan.

“We are producing our own silkworm eggs. We are able to develop silkworm cocoons here that are disease-resistance,” Ricarte said.

In February last year, a P3-million machine that can detect diseases of silkworms was brought to Bago City by a group from OISCA Ibaraki in Japan.

OISCA-Bago Training Center, under coordinator Thelma Watanabe, has also sericulture extension centers in San Carlos City, Don Salvador Benedicto, and Silay City in Negros Occidental and Canlaon City and Mabinay in Oriental Negros. Its Bago City Sericulture Center in the upland village of Ilijan began in 1998.

The Negros Sericulture Extension Project was founded with support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency.*NLG

CINEMALAYA 2008

On its fourth year the independent movie festival of the country was again staged at the Cultural Center of the Philippines last July 11-20, 2008. I was lucky to be given the opportunity to watch a lot of these unique Filipino films. My 7-day, 12-movie marathon at CCP was an experience worth remembering. Based on the reviews and films of the past Cinemalaya, 2008 was a very diverse and competitive one. It broke away from the usual themes of poverty, sex and prostitution, and explored more on humor, lifestyle, history and various social issues especially on children, family and faith. My personal favorites for full-length were Boses, Namets, Jay and 100. Winners for full-length were, Best Supporting Actress: Eugene Domingo (100), Best Supporting Actor: Yul Servo (Brutus), Best Actress: Mylene Dizon (100), Best Actor: Baron Geisler (Jay), Audience Choice: 100, Special Jury Award: Brutus, Best Film: Jay
:banana::banana::lol::lol:

I'm wondering ngaa waay ka daog award ang Boses and Namets? A lot of people were expecting Namets to grab the best in sound and music (awarded to Brutus) while Boses as the Special Jury Citation Award (given to Brutus). One factor maybe peeps is Cesar Montano. Contemporary films like Namets are not his type. he is more on the melodramatic type maybe. Kailinit galing when he was the presentor of the award in CCP dumdom ya Singing Bee gyapon!:bash:

Search for missing 94 fishermen in Negros Occidental on-going
Negros Occ. (23 July) -- The search operation for the 94 fishermen who went missing at the height of typhoon Frank devastation is still on-going here.

Provincial Social Welfare and Development Chief Liane Garcia said the operation is headed by Cadiz City Vice- Mayor Samson Mirhan.

Records form the PSWD showed that out of the 404 fishing boat crews reported to have been sailing that day, 36 perished, 274 survived and 94 were declared missing.

The search was intensified with Gov. Isidro Zayco's creation of "Task Force Mananagat" augmenting the efforts of the rescue team headed by Mirhan.

Garcia said the provincial government provided the Task Force with manpower, food and fuel to strengthen their capability.

Cadiz City was the hardest hit by "Frank" where fishing is the main source of income and is also the main source of fish in the province.

Victims, numbering 12, 547 families received 175 sacks of rice, 95 boxes of sardines, 95 boxes of noodles, she said. Stress de-briefing sessions were also conducting to the families of those who died.

Garcia said the PSWD is currently processing the papers of the 36 fishermen who died for a possible assistance from the Office of the Civil Defense (OCD).

She also said fishermen organizations may also receive livelihood grant from the Department of Agriculture if they submit a project proposal. (PIA-LOL)

Arino 4-gold romp fuels Negros blitz
By Joey Villar
Thursday, July 24, 2008

DUMAGUETE – Dhessa Mae Arino captured four gold medals in badminton as Negros Occidental served notice of its title bid in the Visayas Qualifying Games of the third Philippine Olympic Festival at the Lamberto Macias Sports and Cultural Center here yesterday.

Arino teamed up with Robert Alovan in the 12-under mixed doubles in smashing Bill Gallero and Angel Rose Tiad, 21-7, 21-14, to cap her four-gold splurge in this five-day event aimed at discovering future RP team members.

Arino took the 12-under singles plum, teamed up with April Ann Bibiano to bag the doubles crowns in the 12-under and 14-under divisions before pairing with Robert Alovan to beat Bill Gallero and Angel Rose Tiad, 21-7, 21-14, for the 12-under mixed doubles title.

Arino’s sterling effort underscored Negros Occidental’s opening day blitz as it took 18 of the 20 gold medals staked in badminton.

Meanwhile, host Negros Oriental Gov. Emilio Macias, Dumaguete Mayor Agustin Perdices and Philippine Olympic Festival (POF) chair Robert Aventajado officially ushered in the five-day meet aimed at discovering talents to be developed to become members of the national pool.

Beijing-bound archer Mark Javier graced the ceremonial torch relay before some thousands of spectators, including 1,500 athletes, officials and delegation members from participating local governments like Aklan, Antique, Bohol, Cebu, Cebu City, Guimaras, Northern Samar and Bacolod City.

“We’re honored to host this event and hope we can discover some talents here,” said Macias.

The host province won two golds courtesy of Judea Turing in the 14-under and Charisse Isaw in the ladies’ Open section.

Meanwhile, the chase for top honors in athletics begins today at the newly built main complex in this meet backed by Globe, Philippine Gaming Corp., Summit Drinking Water, AMA Computer U, The Philippine STAR and Creativity Lounge.

Other badminton winners were Louie John Medina (12-under), Robert Alovan (14-under), Christian Crisostomo and Christian Pavia (16-under doubles), Merry Joy Fernandez (16-under), Ernesto Lavao (men’s open), Alem Palmares and Medina (12-under doubles).

Medina and Alovan (14-under doubles), Aljous Alovan and Rogel Manangasi (16-under doubles), Fernandez and Nikki Servado (16-under doubles), Lavao and Salvador Diesmo (men’s open doubles), Bibiano and Palmares (12-under mixed), Crisostomo and Servado (16-under mixed) and Diesmo and Sheila Ledesma (open mixed).

Ba-Neg Senior softball ready for World Series
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Members of the Domingo Lacson National High School Senior team that won the Asia-Pacific championship in Guangzhou, China, are getting ready for the World Series tournament in Lower Sussex, Delaware as the Philippine Little League has committed to advance the funds for the visa processing of the team.

Head coach Tony Oquindo said he received a call from PLL deputy officer Chito Gonzales yesterday instructing him to be on standby as the team might summoned for an interview at the U.S. Embassy anytime this week.

Oquindo said he had to cancel the team’s participation in the Philippine Olympic Festivall All-Visayas event that starts today and instead, allow the DLNHS Junior squad -- that also won the championship in their division in China -- to go to Dumaguete and represent the province.

While he is glad that PLL is taking charge of the processing of their visa, Oquindo said the Bacolod-Negros softball group still has to look for funds to reimburse what the PLL will advance.

The $20,000 subsidy from the International Little League, covers only roundtrip plane ticket of the team to and from Delaware, leaving Ba-Neg to solicit funds for the $130 per person visa processing fee and other charges.

Oquindo, who went with the members of the three Ba-Neg champion teams who visited Capitol yesterday to present their titles to Gov. Isidro Zayco, said they are still pinning their hopes on the City Government of Bacolod for some assistance.*NAB

Nuncio to bless
city gov’t center
BY NIDA BUENAFE

The New Government Center of Bacolod City will be blessed by Most Reverend Edward Joseph Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, when he arrives in the city on Aug. 3.

Diocesan Chancellor Rev. Fr. Brethen Rye Gamala yesterday said the papal nuncio will lead the “very simple rites of blessing” at the new building before he joins Mayor Evelio Leonardia and the city officials in a dinner at the New Government Center.

The visit to the center has been included in the itinerary of the papal nuncio who will visit Bacolod City for the Aug. 4 Episcopal Ordination of Bishop-elect Gerardo Alminaza, Modesto Saonoy, liaison to the event, said during a press conference.

Adams will arrive at the Bacolod-Silay airport on Aug. 3, at around 10:30 a.m., where he will be meet by Silay City Mayor Jose Montelibano. His motorcade will pass through Silay’s San Diego Pro-Cathedral before proceeding to Bacolod City.

The motorcade will have a brief stop at the Carmelite Monastery, before proceeding to the Bacolod City Hall where city officials will greet the papal nuncio.

From the City Hall, the motorcade will stop at the San Sebastian Cathedral and the Bishop’s House where the papal nuncio will have lunch with Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra.

The papal nuncio has been reserved a room at the La Planta Hotel in Bacolod City where he will stay for the night. The next day, he will preside over the ordination of Alminaza.*NAB

POF VISAYAS QUALIFYING

37 gold medals for Negros Occ.
badminton, taekwondo athletes
BY NIDA BUENAFE

Playing as if the medals had been thrown all over the ground for them to pick up and bring home, Negros Occidental badminton and taekwondo athletes collected 37 gold, 16 silver, and 5 bronze medals as of yesterday in the 3rd Visayas Philippine Olympic Festival in Dumaguete City.

Mentored by Jordan Sun of Cadiz City with coaching assistance from Alex Borromeo and Reganaud Yulo of Trinity Christian School, members of the Negros Occidental badminton team displayed brilliant performance on the court to dominate their respective divisions and capture 30 golds, 13 silvers and 4 bronzes.

The onslaught by the Negrenses from the Occidental side of the island was led by team captain Nikke Therese Servando, a sophomore student from Trinity Christian School in Bacolod City.

Servando is a seasoned badminton player and a two-time Palarong Pambansa gold medalist.

In taekwondo, coach Jim-Jim Chua and his wards who composed the Negros Taekwondo Union-Tigers bagged the overall championship honor in the women department of Juniors’ and Seniors’ division by winning six golds, a silver and a bronze while their men counterpart finished with one gold and two silvers.

Finweight Kirstine Chua of TCS topped her category while Louise Dedase of St. Joseph High School took the gold in bantamweight. Another gold for the Juniors’ squad was delivered by Akizu Pama of Doña Hortensia Salas Benedicto National High School of La Carlota City.

John B. Lacson Colleges Foundation’s trio – Ma. Daphne Alindogan, Rubylyn Mapa, and Jennifer Alomodiel – rounded up the 6-gold medal output of the NTU Tigers by winning the championship in their respective categories.

Alindogan took the gold in flyweight while Mapa topped the bantamweight and Alomodiel reigned in featherweight. Pauline Reyes ended up with a silver in women’s senior finweight area while Beatrice Lorca salvaged the bronze in juniors’ featherweight.

In the men’s department, featherweight Mynard Marticio of JBLC captured the gold in seniors’ men while flyweight Jovan Rey Jereza settled for silver. Another second place finish for the team was delivered by lightweight Ferdinand Tomas in the Juniors’ department.

Assisting Chua in the mentoring chores of the Tigers was Andy Perdigueros while Raymundo Bermejo and Renel Jardeleza accompanied the team as trainors.*NAB
