Bacoleña 5th placer
in nursing exam
BY PATRICK PANGILINAN
A graduate of the Riverside College in Bacolod City, placed fifth in the June 2008 Nursing Licensure Examination, results from the Professional Regulation Commission showed yesterday.
Lyka Gede-y, 23, a member of the RC batch 2006, and one of those who retook the examination because of the leakage controversy that year, got an 85.20 percent rating, along with five other examinees from different schools around the country.
Of the 2,186 nursing graduates from Negros schools who took the test on June 10, 11, and 12, 809 passed.
Gede-y, of Gonzaga Subdivision, Brgy. Villamonte, said that she first learned that she passed from a friend who was browsing the internet Thursday night.
“I told my mother about it first,” she told the DAILY STAR last night.
Maricor Familiaran, dean of the RC College of Nursing, lauded Gede-y’s achievement.
Riverside got a 46 percent total passing rate for its 260 passers, 184 of whom were first takers, PRC records showed.
University of St. La Salle posted a 67 percent passing average with its 276 new nurses, most of whom were fresh graduates.
Two-hundred three graduates of West Negros University had 203 graduates who hurdle the examination, giving the school a 22 percent passing rate while the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos got 27 percent for its 33 passers.
With 24 passers, Colegio San Agustin-Bacolod posted 20 percent while the Fellowship Baptist College in Kabankalan City got 19 percent for its four passers out of 21 takers.
The Negros Oriental State University, on the other hand, had a 100 percent passing rate with only one taker, while Siliman University, also in Negros Oriental, has eight new nurses out of 14 examinees for a 62 percent

Small-scale call center
from US in city soon
A US-based company will open a small-scale call center in Bacolod City this year to provide outbound telemarketing services, an official said yesterday.
Lone Star Global IT Solutions, owned by John Burdick of Houston, Texas, will cater to clients in the United States, Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, chairperson of the Bacolod Negros Federation for Information and Communications Technology Inc., said.
Its call center will be located at the Lopue’s East IT Center, an accredited information technology economic zone by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
Batapa-Sigue said recruitment officer Patrick Tapere is looking for agents with at least six months experience in call center industry.
She said the business process outsourcing industry in Bacolod continues to grow as Lone Star Global IT Solutions comes to the city along with other IT enterprises.
She also said that although Bacolod has been successful in promoting itself as one of the next wave cities identified by the Business Process Association of the Philippines, the responsibility does not end there.*NLG

UNDOC pushing
for P1.50 fare hike
BY NIDA BUENAFE
;
The United Negros Drivers Operators Center is pushing for another P1.50 fare and will raise it during a protest in Bacolod City Monday, UNDOC chairman Rommel “Bebot” Santillan said yesterday.
UNDOC will join forces with the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan, the National Federation of Sugar Workers, KARAPATAN and other cause-oriented groups who will hold a protest march and rally at the Bacolod public plaza at 2 p.m. Monday as President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo delivers her State of the Nation Address.
Santillan said they are expecting Arroyo to underscore her banner projects that are being implemented using funds siphoned from the pockets of the public transport sector who endure the weekly increases on fuel prices.
The Pinag-isang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Nationwide, of which UNDOC is a member, is filing a petition for a fare hike, he said.
If the Land Transportation and Franchising Regulatory Board approves the petition, Santillan said, the minimum fare will be pegged at P9.50.
Felipe Gelle Jr., BAYAN-Negros secretary-general, said they are expecting a crowd of 1,500 in their rally that will focus on the worsening economic and political situation in the country.
Poverty, hunger, corruption and oppression have become the trademark of the Arroyo administration, Gelle said, adding that the President has gained the distinction of being the most unpopular leader since the Marcos dictatorship was dismantled in 1986.
“The administration battle cry ‘Ramdam ang Kaunlaran (Feeling the Development)’ has fallen flat on its face and the rallying call ‘Labanan ang Kahirapan (Fight Poverty)’ has also been discredited as nothing more than political gimmickry,” Gelle said.
He also said Arroyo’s SONA will not bring any hope for the people and, like in the previous years, it will only be marked by motherhood statements and a firm denial of the gravity of the crisis in the country.
“The real state of the nation is that of a sinking ship, whose captain robs then abandons all those on board,” Gelle said.*NAB

With all these situations propping up....it would not be surprising that the Philippine's population will plateau upon reaching 95 million because those existing large families are the only ones adding up kids while we of the "later" generation are more intended to career than starting new families...so that means fewer babies later on because fewer guys and gals intend to marry :lol::lol:

these people who have less will continue to reproduce and blame it all to the government because of the kind of life they have... and the only problem here in our country is that...Laws are just made and never been followed. unlike in other countries...Laws are laws. GMC group eyes coal exploration contracts in Negros
By Donnabelle L. Gatdula
Sunday, July 27, 2008
Guidance Management Corp. (GMC), an energy resource development firm, is expecting the award of two coal exploration contracts in Negros, a top company official said.
GMC chairman Joaquin Rodriguez told reporters that these contracts are expected to be signed anytime soon.
The two contracts will involve exploration and development of coal reserves in Calatrava in Negros Occidental and Bayawan in Negros Oriental.
“The coal contracts are hopefully due for signing in the next few weeks,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said the contracts were part of the bidding package under the 2005 Philippine Energy Contracting Round. The other areas under this PECR are Polillo, Quezon and Gigaquit, Surigao Del Norte.
The GMC official, however, said they would have to conduct survey on the areas to come up with an estimated reserves in the areas.
Based on Department of Energy (DOE) data, the estimated coal resource potential in Calatrava area is placed at 2.02 million metric tons while that of the the Bayawan area is around 4.5 million metric tons.
If they could find substantial reserves, Rodriguez said they would be willing to put up a power plant in these areas.
GMC is a consortium of Filipino, Spanish, Australian and American investors which started operations in 2005.
Recently, the DOE awarded to GMC a geothermal contract to explore and develop geothermal projects at the Amacan prospect in Compostela Valley.
The company committed to invest $300 million to put up a 40-megawatt (mw) geothermal power plant in the area.
GMC’s contract area covers an aggregate area of 47,491 hectares in Compostela Valley.
Earlier, GMC said it would be investing an initial $8 million for the project. The company plans to conduct geological surveys in the first two years before drilling the exploratory wells.
“We will spend roughly around $300 million to develop the initial 40-MW capacity of the area but we’re hoping that it could be more than 40 MW,” Rodriguez said.
GMC has also put up a $150-million joint venture biofuel project with Green Fuel Corp., a firm owned by Spanish firms Endesa and Tecnicas Reunidas.
GMC has established presence in the mining industry as well with mineral exploration applications in the most prospective regions in the country.

the reason is obvious migo, the church.
i think its more on responsible parenthood. no matter how many children you want as long as, you are conscientious enough to raise them as good citizen of this country.

that's right migs. but the problem is basi may matuhawn naman nga mag oppose sini kay coal nga daan especially the environmentalists. remember sa pulupandan about 10 years ago? the supposed coal project was stopped because there were opposition to it. i hope this time they'll give it a chance:)

i think the number 1 consideration migs is the financial capability of the parents and that's what responsible parenthood is all about anyway. you can give all the care in the world but without money to buy you food is also tantamount to neglecting your duty as a responsible parent.:) don't you think the government and the church meet half way in addressing this issue of population control once and for all?

^^ They say, "The best things in life are free". That goes for every toy in every Mcdo's happy meal. Too bad that some good things never last. I will personally miss that chance of having a glimpse of every Mcdo Happy Meal toy the store had offered since its beginning. Just cant have both worlds so to speak. Welcome Starbucks Bacolod. I hope this first SB store in Bacolod will have its own distinction much like the first Mcdo store in Bacolod(also the first outside Manila).:)

Vibrancy in the Southern City
As Kabankalan marks its 11th Charter Anniversary on Saturday, the southern city is focusing on the strides it has gained through the years that has made it attractive to investors and visitors. The Charter anniversary will focus on the theme, “Kabankalan, A City of Progress ”.
Kabankalan, under Mayor Pedro Zayco Jr., has been recently named the “ Most Competitive City in Western Visayas” in its category in the survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management Police Center. The study classified Kabankalan as a small-sized city. It is the only city in its group in the region that landed in the AIM list.
The city government, in its website, underscores the steady growth of Kabankalan in various sectors, including economy, education, industries, transportation and local governance.
“Kabankalan has now become a shining example of countryside development that has been translated from the semantics of planners to a functional reality —the city now a model of growth, serving as an inspiration for other southern communities to also push for excellence,” the site further says.
Pre-Charter Day events have been calendared to include activities spearheaded by the Department of Education, Agriculture, Social Welfare and the Negros State College of Agriculture , the premier tertiary education school in southern Negros .
Activities in the Aug. 2 anniversary will start with a Thanksgiving Mass at the St. Francis Xavier Cathedral to be followed by the Charter Day Parade and Program, where outstanding farmers will be recognized.
Giving color and pageantry to the day is the 1 p.m. Udyakan street parade and dance competition to be participated by tribes representing the various barangays in the city.
Also calendared are the Mayor's Cup – Mountain Bike Race and the Mobile Passporting by the Department of Foreign Affairs.
Included in the pre-Charter Day activities are the age-group swimming competition, BMX race, school band competition and band exhibition.
Cattle Wrestling, a carambola, calf lassoing, slalom and barrel race, milk drinking contest, wood chopping and lassoing competitions as well as the kadang race, horse show and load carrying highlight the Agriculture Day activities on July 29 and 30
The NSCA Day highlights are the motorcycle competition, invitational basketball and farmers' activity while the Social Welfare Day will feature a retro-dance show, ballroom dancing, a cultural contest, father's competition, a shooting contest and the battle of the bands.
Reiterating the focus of this year's commemoration, city officials said: It is clear that areas in southern Negros are keeping themselves very competitive and an economy that is undergoing the tests of discouraging trends in international and national businesses and industries.

Accor Hotel to build no-frills hotel (http://www.philippine-builder.com/content/view/478/108/)
European based Accor Hotel, United Kingdom’s Yotel, Malaysian hotel chain and two Indian firms are interested in building no frills hotels in the country.
“I will be meeting the representatives from the Indian firms in the next 90 days,” Samie Lim, chairman of the Philippine Franchisers Association said in an interview.
Lim refused to name the Indian companies saying only that one group owns four hotels while the other operates 30 hotels.
Lim explained that he is studying the concept of the Malaysian group which ties up the budget air fare to the hotel. “Air Asia has a partnership with a hotel near the airport. It is a good business,” he explained. Lim said the investments are part of the ASEAN hotel project of the ASEAN member nations namely the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar and Malaysia.
The ASEAN hotel plans to build similar no frills hotels in the 10 member countries. The hotels will be priced the same. The amenities, rooms and the lobby of all the hotels across the ASEAN will be the same as well.
According to Lim, the ASEAN ministers approved the ASEAN hotel concept last year after the meeting of the economic ministers in Manila.
“All the ASEAN hotels will have similar services and integrated marketing and advertising,” Lim explained. “They will also conduct a centralized training for the food and beverage staff.”
This, he said, is necessary in order to ensure that the services provided by all ASEAN hotels are consistent.
Also, Lim said there will be more than one ASEAN hotel per country. In the Philippines, he said there should be ASEAN hotels in all major tourist destinations like Cebu, Boracay, Bacolod, Baguio and Ilocos.
Lim further said that the owner of the franchise in the country must be a local. If this is not possible, he said at least a big chunk of the hotel franchise is owned by a resident. For example, the master franchise of the hotel must be 34 percent owned by locals.
The Accor Hotel is currently operating in nearly 100 countries. It is the European leader in hotels and the global leader in corporate services. Yotel on the other hand is also a no frills hotel operating in United Kingdom.

migs, they will be coming back soon :) lets wait for the outcome when the NGC will open this august/sept :) the old central in front of Bacolod Public cemetery will be transformed into something amazing :) we have high hopes that this project will come into reality. And the mini theme park is a nice idea. :) but i think Bacolod isnt ready for that yet :) not unless we can further increase the number of the working class and the number of tourist and investors then maybe we can handle such project :)

One thing I hate about Starbucks "regulars" is that they make the coffee shop look more like a tambayan (in the hopes of looking sosyal to others). For instance, only one will buy a coffee (usually the cheapest one in the list) then his/her mates will make the table "tulungtungan" of cellphones, and then they go snap-crazy with the pics. I've had my share of this in other SB outlets. Most of these brats abuse their right as customers ("We bought coffee anyway so we have the right to stay here as much as we want.") I won't be surprised if the SB outlet in Bacolod will be haven of coños, too, hayyzz~~
Pero I have high hopes to SB in general, I believe they can still penetrate the market. If only Gerry's Grill learned the ropes of the Bacolod market, they could have still survived. :(

Yup... The Negrense will always be loyal to our own home grown businesses. That is why we have Bob's, Calea, Pendy's, Chicken House, Quan, Ceres Liner, L'Fisher, Circle Inn, Business/Executive Inn, and the Showroom. My only wish is that theses businesses would start expanding overseas... well at least, over the Visayan Sea for starters. One thing our businessman should always remember is that Negrenses will not tolerate second rate quality or service, any Negrense business that strives for excellence will always succeed. I guess that is why most Manila based businesses trying to gain a foothold in Bacolod always fail in the end. Only SM and Robinson's have succeeded as far as I know.

I dont think Bob's and calea will cross seas to expand. They wanted to be icons of our city thats why they just branch out within the corners of Bacolod :) They wanted people to remember Bacolod with their names attached to it :)

Speaking of expansion, I noticed that Bascon Café is going to open a new café at Salvacion Center? Correct me if I'm wrong. I saw an ad days ago when I went to Robinson's.
yes...finally!!! It will be a lot easier for others to grab some goodies from Bascon. But i still love their la salle branch....its quiet and they have a very nice interior. it only gets too noisy when the apos are there...grrrrrrrr!!!

I dont think Bob's and calea will cross seas to expand. They wanted to be icons of our city thats why they just branch out within the corners of Bacolod :) They wanted people to remember Bacolod with their names attached to it :)
Bong Bongs and Merci has their own branches now in Iloilo and possibly expanding in Cebu. And these 2 are the most popular piaya brands in Manila today.

Ambassador and Mrs. Edgardo B. Espiritu pose with pride beside the WOW Philippines London black cab ,which the Ambassador described the new promotional campaign of Philippine tourism as “inspired, attention-getting, and eye-catching”. The Philippine scenes depicted on the black cabs’ livery are: a dive site, water sports, an island sunset, painted sails and white sands of Boracay, Bacolod’s Masskara festival, a world-class golf course, the chocolate hills of Bohol, a Mindanao woman in colorful costume, and the Banaue Rice Terraces. A 50-strong fleet of London black cabs is now cruising around London with some of the Philippines’ tourist attractions wrapped around their gleaming bodies.

Piccio wins 12 golds
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Negros Occidental’s young swimming champion Kiefer Alexander Piccio harvested 12 gold medals in Dumaguete City over the weekend to surpass his last year’s 10 gold-medal output in the Philippine Olympic Festival Visayas qualifying.
Piccio ruled the boys’ 14 years old 200m breastroke; 100m, 1,500m, 50m, 200m, 400m freestyle; 100m and 200m backstroke; 400m and 200m individual medley; 200m and 100m fly to boost Negros Occidental’s stocks in the POF qualifying games,
With his feat, the young swimmer, who is presently undergoing training in the national team, will represent the province in the national championships set in October in Misamis Oriental.
POF organizers also recognized Piccio as the No. 1 swimmer in boys’ 14 years old sextathlon as he registered top marks in 400m IM (5:33.06), 400m free (4:56.72), 200m back (2:35.07), 200m breast (2:54.11), 200m fly (2:27.73), and 100m free (1:02.87).
While he did not break any official record, the Negrense swimmer managed to maintain his dominance in his events against rivals from Iloilo, Antique, Cebu, and host Negros Oriental.*NAB

Negros Occ. Paddlers top POF Visayas tilt
After impressive performances in taekwondo and badminton, Negros Occidental’s golden haul in the Philippine Olympic Festival Visayas Qualifying held in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, extended to table tennis events where stalwarts of the Lopue’s-Neg. Occ. registered a 1-2 finish in four divisions to add more golds and silvers to the Occidental’s medal tally.
Coached by former RP team campaigner Marell Lagunday and assisted by Joson Lavilla, the Lopue’s-Neg. Occ. table tennis team captured the gold and silver in boys and girls’ 14-Under and boys and girls’ 17-under, played at the Foundation University, to leave behind Bohol, Antique, Aklan, and host Negros Oriental in the overall standings.
John Paul Gubaton and teammate Edmund Garganian slugged it out in boys’ 14-Under with the former taking the title while Roderick Rodriguez of Negros Oriental salvaged the bronze.
Beverly Paulma and Shamiela Pineda, both from the Lopue’s table tennis stable, faced each other in the championship round of girls’ 14-Under and 17-Under with Paulma prevailing over Pineda in both categories for her twin gold medals in the tournament.
Marcelle Josephine Galera of Antique picked up the bronze in the girls’ 14-Under while Trishie Radaza got the bronze in 17-Under.
The boys’ 17-Under final showdown also figured an all-Negros Occidental match-up between Danilo Abonales and John Paul Gubaton -- who earlier won the boys’ 14-Under – with Abonales winning the crown. Antique’s Jojemar Bungabong settled for the bronze medal.
Rounding up the table tennis honorees in the POF tournament was Bohol’s Gerves Espaoola who won the titular game in boys’ 20-Under against Silliman’s Joseph Cedrome while Bungabong once again finished with a bronze medal.
All medal winners in table tennis in the POF Visayas qualifying will compete in the national championships set on October 20-16 in Misamis Oriental.
Meanwhile, also posting golden finishes for Negros Occidental during the tournament in Dumaguete were taekwondo jins Myrel Tapang (fin weight), Jessa Jane Bautista (middle weight), of La Consolacion College.
Their teammate Liezel Donayre took the silver in welter weight, while fellow Hannah Marie Dioneo (feather weight), Charming Viñas (fly weight), and Leo Japitana (fin weight) settled for the bronze.*

Grand opening of Planta Hotel set Monday
By Gil Alfredo B. Severino
THE 82-room Planta Centro Bacolod Hotel and Residences is having a grand opening celebration Monday night.
Managed by Centro Hotels Corporation, which also managed the Business Inn, Planta offers an intimate garden-courtyard where weddings can be held; and comes with a swimming pool that is quite ideal for a family to stay while visiting Bacolod City, the capital of Negros Occidental.
Named after the historic postwar Bacolod Ice Plant that is still operating at the back of the hotel, Planta's facade is conclusively Euro-Mediterranean and sometime resembling the old Manila Hotel grandiose entrance.
This newest hotel in the City of Smiles was designed by architect and former vice mayor Ramiro 'Chick' Garcia and its interiors by Leo Almeria.
Planta has two large ballrooms, multi-purpose courtyard for meetings or wedding receptions and the most unique in town, the top view solarium and observatory, where a thousand can be accommodated in all the function rooms combined.
Other than its guest rooms, which are complete with amenities, Planta, has special facilities like a business center and recreational facilities. The business center is equipped with a personal computer station with Internet access, printer, scanner and facsimile machines, while the recreational facilities consist of a gym and an outdoor swimming pool.
Its fairly large suites can accommodate a family of three; the residence suites on the hotel's third floor and loft has a view of the city and the sea, the hotel rooms has keyless doors, Wifi access, cable TV, electronic safe, IDD/NDD phone, hot and cold shower and other amenities of a modern hotel.
Planta's coffee shop offers a 24-hour fine dining experience in a casual atmosphere.
Planta Hotel, which sits on a 6,700 square-meter lot, is located along Araneta Street going to the old Bacolod Airport, a mere five-minute walk to a mall, Bacolod native pasalubong centers, a bank in front and accessible to public utility vehicles.

Negrense bet shocks Bata in Villar Cup
UNHERALDED Negrense Ricky Zerna, a member of the rising Negros Billiards Stable of businessman Jonathan Sy, hit pool headlines during the weekend when he stole the thunder from the legendary Efren 'Bata' Reyes by posting an unexpected but otherwise astonishing 9-4 victory in the second round of the Senate President Manny Villar Cup Bulacan leg Saturday at the Event Center of SM City in Marilao, Bulacan.
Zerna thus inched closer to the coveted P300,000 top prize money after he displayed what covering newsmen described as "sharp pocketing and great control of the cue" to post the win over the man considered the world over as the best cue artist ever.
The Dumaguete City native who won over Richard Pornelosa, 9-7, in the opening round, is scheduled to face next another RP pool icon in former world No. 1 Francisco 'Django' Bustamante, who posted his second straight victory also last Saturday by beating reigning national champion Lee Van Corteza, 9-6.
"I'm so happy. This is really a great honor to be able to win against the best player in the whole world," Zerna told reporters in Pilipino right after the win. "I just hope this does not end here and I will strive to play better in order to achieve my dream of becoming a champion."
For his part, Bata said: "It's really difficult to win nowadays due to the emergence of so many good young players, which is also good for the sport."
Bata defeated Jomar de Ocampo, 9-7, in his first assignment.(HCV)

GMA okays Cadiz
as jatropha area
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The Northern Negros Bio Fuel Corp. has signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine National Oil Co. Alternative Fuel Corp. for the planting of jatropha curcas on about 5,000 has. in Cadiz City in one to three years, businessman Victor Puey said yesterday.
PNOC, with the approval of President Gloria Arroyo, decided to make Cadiz City one of their priority Jatropha projects areas to be given technical assistance, recommendations for bank financing, and to be provided with a nursery and processing plant, Puey, treasurer and operations manager of the bioefuel’s firm, said.
In her State of the Nation Address last year, the president recommended jatropha production not only as a cleaner-fuel alternative to fossil-based or crude oil but as an energy source to lessen the country’s dependence on imported crude.
With the signing of Republic Act 9367 or the Biofuels Act of 2007, the president tasked the PNOC-AFC to spearhead biofuels propagation projects.
The alternatives fuels program, that she is expected to tackle in her SONA today, is one of the five key components of the President’s energy independence agenda, that aims to make the country 60 percent energy self-sufficient by 2010, Malacañang announced yesterday.
Through the assistance of Cadiz Mayor Salvador Escalante and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources his firm was able to get a permit to use some idle public lands for Jatropha planting, Puey said.
Puey said he talked to Sugar Regulatory Administrator Rafael Coscolluela who also promised to support the project.
“For the past months we have been receiving a lot of complains, especially from marginal planters in the upland areas of Cadiz City, that with the increasing price of fertilizer, fuel and labor it is no longer profitable to plant sugarcane,” Puey said.
At present, thousand of hectares of these lands are vacant and more sugar farms to follow, he said.
Studies conducted by his group show that Jatropha is the perfect alternative plant for marginal lands, he said.
“Not only will the poor farmer earn money from their marginal lands they will be producing oil which our country and specifically our province needs at this critical time where cost of fuel are fast increasing beyond our means,” he said.*CPG

we could have been a separate republic with cantonal/federal form of government if not for the american occupation which ended the short lived cantonal republic of negros (1898-1901) due to concessions made by our leaders and according to a book i read from sa-onoy, we actually held the first assembly or congress in asia. are there still available copies of that history book of negros authored by modesto p. sa-onoy? :)

^^ And I think also the first Filipino "Emperor" in 1920's I believe. ;) It was in the name of Istansilao (I forgot the last name, hehe!!) who was declared the "emperor" of Negros Occidental...
@Kyle, can you please confirm if there was such? Because it is being posted publicly in the "Do You Know?" ads here in Manila.

Encore: Earth, Wind & Fire Experience/Al McKay in Aug. (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=200807272&type=2)
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
Monday, July 28, 2008
The last time they performed here a few months ago, Earth, Wind & Fire Experience/Al McKay unwittingly stirred up a minor controversy due to, well, “confused identity.” It seems that there are two such groups and the one that came here and that’s coming back for more shows next month is, that’s it, Earth, Wind & Fire Experience/Al McKay. I won’t mention the name of the other group to avoid a similar misunderstanding.
Anyway, if the rousing and enthusiastic reception of the SRO audience at the Araneta Coliseum were any indication, the recent concert tour in Manila of Earth, Wind & Fire Experience featuring Al McKay may be considered a success.
It was indeed quite a musical experience (no pun intended) that proved beyond doubt the undiminished popularity of the legendary band and its undisputed position as one of the most enduring groups of the last four decades acclaimed for its masterful fusion of R&B, funk, soul and disco music.
What provided added excitement and color to an already fun-filled and entertaining show was the spontaneous and spirited participation of the ecstatic crowd which gamely crooned and grooved to the swinging music of the band and transformed the concert into one big dance party.
The celebrated band, which gained international prominence for such hits as Shining Star, Fantasy, September, Let’s Groove and Boogie Wonderland, among many others, will set the concert scene on fire anew during a four-date, multi-city tour that will be highlighted by a major concert on Aug. 22 at the Aliw Theater, CCP Complex, Pasay City.
Other shows are slated on Aug. 20 at Limketkai Mall, Cagayan de Oro City; Aug. 23 during the Kadayawan Festival in Davao City, at the SM Mall grounds; and Aug. 24 at the Bacolod Coliseum, Bacolod City.
Its upcoming August tour, to be mounted by Steve O’Neal Productions, will showcase the talent and artistry of Al McKay, renowned band leader, guitarist and songwriter who is acknowledged as an instrumental force behind the remarkable music of Earth, Wind & Fire that has touched the hearts of two generations of fans worldwide
(Note: Tickets to the Aliw Theater show are priced at P3,675, P2,625, P2,100 and P1,575 and are available at Ticketnet outlets at SM Department stores. For reservations and inquiries, call 911-5555.)
Watch for Tony Orlando’s Yellow Ribbon Tour
Besides Earth, Wind & Fire Experience/Al McKay (and several other foreign acts), also coming for a concert is Tony Orlando, the voice behind the song Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Ole Oak Tree which has become associated with Ninoy Aquino (and, eventually, the color yellow to his widow, former Pres. Cory Aquino).
Okay, all together now, one more time:
I’m comin’ home, I’ve done my time
Now I’ve got to know what is and isn’t mine
If you received my letter telling you I’d soon be free
Then you’ll know just what to do
If you still want me
If you still want me
Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree
It’s been three long years
Do ya still want me (still want me)
If I don’t see a ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree
I’ll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don’t see a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
(Tie a yellow ribbon ‘round the ole oak tree)
Since its successful debut in 1973, Tie A Yellow Ribbon has taken the music world by storm, capturing the hearts of millions with its stirring rhythm and magnificent harmony.
It has been acclaimed internationally not only as a pop jewel but as a universal anthem of hope, homecoming and reunion in America and other parts of the globe.
Simple as it may sound, the song delivers a powerful message of love, hope and renewal as it celebrates the triumph of the human spirit over adversity in the poignant tale of a newly-released prisoner who was filled with joy when he found out his sweetheart had not forgotten him after all, after seeing not just one but “a hundred yellow ribbons ‘round the ole oak tree” on his return to his hometown.
This September, or 35 years after the iconic song’s recording, it will be the turn of thousands of Pinoy music fans to tie a yellow ribbon (‘round a native tree or ‘round their arms, perhaps?) to welcome Tony, lead vocalist of the popular Tony Orlando and Dawn, who will perform at a live concert on Sept. 19 at the Araneta Coliseum.
Titled Tony Orlando: Yellow Ribbon Tour 2008, the one-night musical treat to be produced by Viva Concerts & Events, brings to the local concert scene one of America’s most admired and enduring singers whose warmth and energy on stage have always generated a wave of excitement among audiences.
(Note: Tickets to Tony Orlando: Yellow Ribbon Tour 2008 are priced at P4,410 for VIP, P3,675 for patron, P3,150 for lower box, P1,785 for upper box A, P630 for upper box B and P263 for general admission. Call Ticketnet at 911-5555 or Viva Concerts & Events at 687-6181 local 620 or745.)

RP call centers: Upbeat on the future (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=200807278&type=2)
By Eden Estopace
Monday, July 28, 2008
There is no better proof of Thomas Friedman’s revolutionary concept that the “world is flat” than the emergence and boom of the call center industry in the Philippines.
Now with 151,000 seats and 205,000 employees, Philippine call centers are poised to grow even more rapidly in the next few years, with projections of a 23-percent growth through 2009, according to Dan Reyes, president of Sitel Philippines and director of the Call Center Association of the Philippines (CCAP).
“Call centers are the torchbearer of the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry,” said Reyes during the opening of the Call Center Conference and Expo 2008 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City last Wednesday.
In this industry, he said, there is no tomorrow because Philippine call centers are already operating 24/7 and serving different time zones.
The two-day conference came at a time when call centers are reeling from the effects of a global economic downturn, falling foreign exchange rate and the looming impact of a recession in the United States, which is the country’s main BPO market.
Admittedly, Reyes said the challenges are greater now, but the industry is also much larger, more resilient than it was when CCAP was established seven years ago with only seven members.
In fact, if there is one thing that the current business climate has given the industry, it was opportunity, not loss.
Call center executives led by Reyes, Raffy David of Pilipinas Teleserv, Vic Endaya of Advanced Contact Solutions, Benedict Hernandez of eTelecare, and John Langford of ICT Group are one in saying that the weakening of the dollar and the US economy has directly hit the bottom line but it has also led the industry to diversify and look for other markets outside the US like Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Europe.
It has, among others, also driven companies to streamline operations to explore cost-efficiency improvements, increase volume of work and quality and strive to be on clients’ top tier service providers. And the effort paid off.
According to Reyes, CCAP, with 39 members and a combined strength of 97,700 seats and 134,000 employees, is expected to grow by yearend to 31 percent to 176,000 seats and 239,000 employees.
Revenues are also expected to grow to $4.34 billion by end of 2008, accounting for two-thirds of the projected BPO revenues for the year of $6.7 billion.
“If anything, the economic slowdown and price pressures should lead companies to operational efficiencies and cost structures,” Reyes said.
“Last year,” added Hernandez, “we got the opportunity to be better because we were faced with projections that were falling down the ground. Because we couldn’t influence the way the exchange rate is moving, we recourse to controlling what we can control better like efficiency, productivity. It has given us more focus.”
Another way of looking at the US recession is that it may even lead to more outsourced work to countries like the Philippines, according to Reyes.
“Because of the recession and its impact, calls will definitely go down for those companies which have already migrated here, but on the positive side, those not yet in the Philippines may have more pressure to offshore,” added Endaya.
As it is now, the Philippines is in the top 10 of the 2007 A. T. Kearney Global Services Location Index and was named the Best Offshoring Destination in 2007 by the UK-based National Outsourcing Association.
“Besides,” Reyes said, “the Philippines is no longer competing solely on cost arbitrage but on quality.”
Retooling for the future
In a presentation on global call center trends, William Dieu, senior research analyst at callcentres.net, introduced seven key drivers for the call center of the future.
Dieu said that, among others, a call center will continue to be the most strategic business unit in an organization as majority of customer contact is made through it.
Because of this, call centers are more going in the direction of becoming profit centers with primary revenue-generation responsibility.
In fact, in the Asia-Pacific, revenues generated from inbound and outbound calls reached $665.4 million in 2007. This is projected to grow to $13.1 billion in the next seven years.
Are Philippine call centers taking advantage of this wave? Dieu said a large percent of call centers in the country now have upselling and cross-selling opportunities, so they should be able to ride that wave.
Another thing in the horizon for call centers is the coming of the so-called Generation Y, which is expected to change the landscape of call center services of the future.
“This generation has a high preference for interacting with organizations using Internet and Web chat. It has low preference for speaking but prefers voice channels over the Internet,” said Dieu.
In line with this, he said more Philippine call centers are moving toward IP enablement.
During the press luncheon, the call center executives led by Reyes disclosed that the average age of call center workforce is 23. Admittedly, turnover and agent attrition is high. Dieu’s presentation revealed that full-time call center agents stay in a company for 22 months on average, part-time employees around 10 months, team leaders a little bit longer at 41 months, and managers up to 71 months.
“The call center is a people’s business,” said Reyes. “The positive trend is that as far as retention is concerned, there is already a significant increase in the number of months people stay in the industry. Our collective programs have helped our objective of not only retaining talent but making them happy.”
Hernandez also revealed that the Philippines is even enjoying lower attrition rates compared to other countries.
Among others, the call center industry has always been known for paying more than any other industry, with even better incentives.
“We look for talents with specialized skills and pay higher; we are creating opportunity in the workforce to move up,” Hernandez said.
But more than this, the industry is also striving to provide an even better working environment for agents inasmuch as call center employees work on graveyard shifts and ungodly hours.
It is now the norm, the executives said, in most call centers to have a 24/7 cafeteria, a place to take a nap or rest, and game rooms where they can hang out with friends.
“The thing is when you are 23 and you have income, you hang out, buy cigarettes, chill out. Part of our program in taking care of our people is to make them aware of managing their lifestyles,” Hernandez added.
The next wave
In his keynote speech during the two-day conference, Senate President Manuel Villar praised the social impact of the call centers in the country.
“The call center industry has given opportunities for people who want to stay in the country. More than jobs, it has given our people a psychic income. Those who would have left are now gainfully employed here,” Villar said.
Hernandez affirmed that more than jobs and revenues, the call center business has contributed to national pride.
“We have proven to the world that we could actually do a better job,” he said.
Perhaps even more than pride and jobs and psychic income is the expanding impact in cities outside Metro Manila.
In a statement, the CCAP bared the so-called 10 next wave cities nationwide, which are identified as new locators and crucial to the industry’s expansion in the next few years.
These new cities include Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Laguna, Batangas, Angeles and Dumaguete.
“We are proud of the fact that this phenomenon is not isolated in Metro Manila. More and more Filipinos are benefiting from the investment and employment opportunities provided by outsourced and in-house contact centers nationwide,” Jojo Uligan, CCAP executive director, said in a statement.
The CCAP executives affirm that setting up shop in cities outside Metro Manila has even greater social impact. For one, the quality of the workforce is the same and the industry builds a culture of loyalty in the locality.
This way, the industry encourages young professionals to stay and at the same time attract many others to go back.
“The industry continues to be vibrant and thriving. We are looking forward to achieving new heights to become a global call center powerhouse,” Reyes said.
The world is flat, according to Friedman, because it has leveled the global playing field in terms of work opportunities. A call center agent in the Philippines can provide the same quality of service to a European client, for example, as his counterpart in India or China. The issue is not on who could do it but who could do it better at more competitive levels in the global marketplace.

IMO,Sorrento would the best place for SB Bacolod.
Sorrento or Metrodome is a good candidate for for Starbs, IMO. I dunno how Mr. _____ got to franchise an SB , when all of the starbs across the country are under the Rustans Coffee Brand. Or is it possible na si Mr. _____ lang ang nag finance just to open a branch? AFAIK, starbs is not open for any franchising. (sorry forgot the name of that guy sa Mcjolla)

GJ is a good brand. in fact I would oftentimes prefer Gj over starbs. but it would also be great of CBATL could open a branch in bcd. CBATL is much better than GJ, IMO. and has a more standard flavor . nga kung bisan diin ikaw nga branch mag kadto, you will get to experience the same flavor of coffee. unlike sa starbs pa chamba chamba. kisa lasaw kis a tam an katam is. besides CBATL has better tea collection than starbs.
I dont think Bob's and calea will cross seas to expand. They wanted to be icons of our city thats why they just branch out within the corners of Bacolod :) They wanted people to remember Bacolod with their names attached to it :)
damo damo na ga attempt i franchise ang Calea pero indi gusto ang tag iya kay once ma franchise na, theres a big chance nga ma sacrifice na ang quality, kag indi na mag palareho ang ila flavor from one branch to another.

For reservations and inquiries, call 911-5555.)

ay thanks for the post! i really wanted to see this group! pero sa davao ko na sila maabutan. most likely preho man lng na ila repertoire from one city to another ah.
i don't know why this is not being highlighted in our history books or not written at all. it was not until the declaration of the al cinco del noviembre as a legal holiday during the time of cory that most negrenses including myself knew of this fact.
btw migo, i haven't heard there was some kind of a negros "emperor". pardon my ignorance but where did you get that?
baw migs, u know naman, kung diin nayun ang luwag. ari sa manila. ti ang history nga naka focus diri sa luzon ang naka sulat sa books eh. when in fact there are other equally important historical events nga natabunan nga, undiscovered.

Mc Do in 6th St Lacson is under the McJolla Franchise and is not directly operated by Golden Arches Devt.
Not anymore. McJolla was recently sold back to Golden Arches ;)
Name of operator is still McJolla but Golden Arches now has stake in it. Long time Operations hotshot of McDo Bacolod, Andrea "Yang" Torrecha is now back in Manila.
but sad to say...they were just forgotten :) i hope the government will also give even just a little importance to our athlete for they are the ones giving prestige to our country...look at the little leagues of Bacolod. They tried their best to bring home the crown pero dutayan pa sila indi kahampang. haaaaaaay!!!!

Vibrancy in the
Southern City FEATURES
Reiterating the focus of this year's commemoration, city officials said: It is clear that areas in southern Negros are keeping themselves very competitive and an economy that is undergoing the tests of discouraging trends in international and national businesses

Sandugo awards
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia topped the Awards for city mayors out of the eight awardees for the category in the 10th Sandugo Awards for Local Chief Executives in Region 6 for 2007, while Barangay Captain Salvacion Sombilla of Granada was the sole winner in her category.
The awarding ceremonies will be held on Wednesday at 5 p.m. at the Manila Hotel.
Bacolod City Health Officer Dr. Salome Biñas yesterday said the award is in line with the blood-letting program of the CHO and Republic Act 7719 or the National Voluntary Blood Service Program.
She said Bacolod City has exceeded the targeted number of blood donors which is one percent of the total population, or a total of 5,226 donors for 2007.
There are a total of 70 Sandugo Awardees in the province of Negros Occidental for the year 2007, among them is the late Negros Occidental Gov. Joseph Marañon.
Other awardees in the category for mayors are Mayor Pedro Zayco of Kabankalan City, Eric Saratan – Talisay, Leo Rafael Cueva – Sagay, Salvador Escalante Jr. – Cadiz, Carmina Bascon – Himamaylan, Melecio Yap Jr. – Escalante and Oscar Montilla Jr. – Sipalay.
The list of awardees include 60 barangay captains from Kabankalan, Talisay, Sagay, Cadiz, Himamaylan, Escalante, Sipalay, La Carlota, Silay, Victorias, Ilog, Moises Padilla, Pontevedra and Candoni.*CGS

hi ng... nice to be back here again.. havent visited the site for so long...
btw, just want to update the people of bacolod city....
groundbreaking rites for the incoming gaisano east comples is ongoing and construction might begin last quarter 2008...
the lopues east complex also begins their plans of expanding their store early next year as the Entry of LONESTAR Call Industry anticipates the surge of clients in the area....
also, at the front of the government center will be rising a small complex that will signal the construction boom in the area...
right now, we are being offered by major companies (along with my neighbors) since we live near the government centre to sell our properties as they will convert the area into a mix use developments... as far as im concerned, MEGAWORLD is really interested in buying 50++ hectares of land near the Government Centre and they are also interested in buying the Old Bacolod Airport as they will convert the place into a mix use Bayside Property also like what they will be doing in the Pasay Reclamation Complex...
The Potential of Bacolod is so Bright Right now that RGMA is reconsidering one of their Old Plans to Relocate their Regional Studio from Alta Tierra Village in Iloilo which is Flood Prone to somewhere in the EastTown of Bacolod City but it is still unconfirmed.
With the coming entry of People Support to Bacolod, other CCI's are interested in going to Bacolod and put up their next BizCentres here... I heard E-telecare and Epixstar are some of the Interested Players... Even heard that HSBC will be investing in the City also... One thing for sure, these arent mere hearsay only...
SUrely, ALI will be Expanding their presence in the Sugarbowl that will be soon Ethanolbowl of the country by investing in Mix Use Properties like that of GREENBELT in Makati somewhere in the Northside of the City and EastTown parts also... ALI will be putting up their next Mall in The Negros Metropolitan...
Surely, these signs will just only strengthen my statement before and for sure ARANETA GROUP will have the Biggest Project in the entirety as they go FULL Throttle in converting their BMMC COMPOUND into a VISAYAN CUBAO LEGACY... I Know ARANETA COLISEUM VISAYAS will be the FIRST PROJECT and the splendid Glory of the GATEWAY MALL... this will be in the coming months so lets all hope that the Execs wont change their minds... FYI: Araneta not only convert areas into mix use property, they also operates call centres and high rise condominiums... Their Talisay Hectarage based on my source have been decided to convert into an ECOZONE...

PIA Press Release
2008/07/29
Bacolod barangays celebrate Buntis Day
Bacolod City (29 July) -- Different barangays, this city celebrated recently the Buntis Day, dedicated for pregnant women as part of the Nutrition Month celebration.
The Bacolod City Health Department in coordination with the Bacolod Nutrition Committee and the clustered Barangays 1 to 7 gather some 55 pregnant women for urinalysis, hemocrit and blood typing examination sponsored by BIOFEMME UNILAB.
Advocacy on the importance of proper nutrition on pregnant women was conducted by CHO Dr. Salome Biñas.
Iron supplement tablets and capsules were given to pregnant women and identified malnourished children were fed by Here's Hope Ministries and Evangelistic International Ministries.
Meanwhile, Brgy. Sum-ag also launched the Here's Hope Foundation, a non-government organization primarily concerned on proper nutrition of poor children.
During the celebration, children paraded wearing headdresses of fruits or vegetables of any kind. A "Healthiest Baby Contest" was also conducted where the winner will receive a prize from the barangay.
Under P.D. 491, July was declared as Nutrition Month and this year's theme is "Wastong Nutrisyon ni mommy, Siguradong healthy si baby". (PIA/EAD)

^^
sorry SUV111, i read a couple of months ago that the university games will be transfered to another city because of the misunderstanding of the organizers and the USLS president.
same thing that happened to Charlie Cojuanco and the PFF...
we are the original host of the Asian Football Cup that Iloilo hosted.
Br. Ray Suplido (new president of USLS) seems to have a different way of running things. :) Besides, it's not really a loss. USLS has hosted 8 out of the 12 (?) UniGames already and it's high time that other universities will have the chance to host also. Last year's UniGames, also hosted by USLS, was just after the Masskara season, so it wasn't really a total loss.

hi ng... nice to be back here again.. havent visited the site for so long...
btw, just want to update the people of bacolod city....
groundbreaking rites for the incoming gaisano east comples is ongoing and construction might begin last quarter 2008...
the lopues east complex also begins their plans of expanding their store early next year as the Entry of LONESTAR Call Industry anticipates the surge of clients in the area....
also, at the front of the government center will be rising a small complex that will signal the construction boom in the area...
right now, we are being offered by major companies (along with my neighbors) since we live near the government centre to sell our properties as they will convert the area into a mix use developments... as far as im concerned, MEGAWORLD is really interested in buying 50++ hectares of land near the Government Centre and they are also interested in buying the Old Bacolod Airport as they will convert the place into a mix use Bayside Property also like what they will be doing in the Pasay Reclamation Complex...
