Did it go to the roads that have been donated to the government? 30% would be enough for road networks and some public space/park.

i think there's a portion there that's alloted for a public park. i don't know though if its exclusively for parks or has the government have an option to use it to something else. i'm not quite sure of that.

day 1 Cebu To Bacolod
It only takes about 40 minutes to fly from Cebu to Negros Occidental, but the difference between these two cities belies their physical proximity. Unlike Cebu’s perennially buzzing runway, the airport at Bacolod houses an oftentimes sleepy terminal. This very laidback pace is evident everywhere in this province, where traffic on most days resembles that of a sleepy Sunday afternoon.
Visit “Paris” in Negros
The city of Silay, which is a mere 15-minute jeepney ride from the airport, has been called the “Paris of Negros” as it boasts a large collection of well-preserved heritage homes. Grand antiquated mansions line the streets of the centuries-old neighborhood which was once the center of a large and lucrative sugar industry. Stroll around the town plaza where most of the stately homes are nestled. And just a stone’s throw away, along Cinco de Noviembre street, stands the Balay Negrense Museum, the mansion owned by the son of the first sugar baron of Negros, Yves Leopold Germain Gaston. This fully-restored colonial-era mansion gives visitors a glimpse of the once-opulent Silaynon lifestyle. Balay Negrense Museum, Cinco de Noviembre Street, Silay City; tel: +63 34 714 7676, www.balaynegrense.com
Enjoy the sweet treats Enjoy the sweet treats
Pristine white sandy beaches, ancient baroque churches, costumed revelers with gaily-painted faces. Most of these classic images of the Philippines come from just one area - the Western Visayas region. In many ways, this cluster of islands at the archipelago’s center is a microcosm of the country. Credit this to its varied landscapes of both sand and slopes, all of it home to a people blessed with a good-natured character and a rich Hispanic heritage. There is much to experience on these happy isles, and good enough reasons to plan a weekend backpacking adventure. Fortunately, the Western Visayas is also just a short hop from Cebu Pacific’s namesake travel hub – Cebu has easy access to the cities of Bacolod, Iloilo and Kalibo. If you’re not up for the long, scenic route, hop on a plane – CEB flies to all three destinations.
Chase some waterfalls
After refueling, it’s time for a quick jungle adventure. At the foothills of the nearby Mount Mandalagan, about an hour’s drive from Silay, is the hillside village of Patag. Patag is the ideal jump-off point for those wishing to explore the falls on these slopes. From here, one can hike to any of a dozen waterfalls, the nearest one being an easy 40-minute trek away. Spend a few hours swimming in cool, cascading waters before heading back to Bacolod City.
Go food tripping in Bacolod City
Your first stop in Bacolod City should be Bob’s Restaurant – practically an institution after 40 years of serving up great food. Here you can savour a wide variety of mouth- wateringly tasty dishes, both western and local fare. Think of massive cheeseburgers as well as tender, juicy baby back ribs which the locals say are the best in town. For dessert, pop into Calea as sweet is the specialty here. Try the delectable Oreo cheesecake, among other scrumptious samplings. Bob’s Restaurant, 111 Lacson Street, Bacolod City; tel: +6334 441 1431. Review:'Namets' well-done, predictable (http://abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryID=127101)
kOC7L1B36Hc
For all its charm Emilio "Jay" Abello’s "Namets" goes into well-travelled territory, into a kind of romantic genre that mixes wit, nostalgia, a standard feel-good love story and gustatory visuals of Negrense cuisine.
Here's the plot: Irresponsible cute boy gets into a tight fix after amassing a huge debt from the local gabling lord; in the middle of the fracas, his ex-girlfriend comes into the picture, they fight fight fight then fall in love, fall out of love, get back together; everything evens out and they live happily ever after.
Cliche? It certainly veers into that territoy--almost. Jacko (Christian Vasquez) who lost in a cockfighting bet, makes a deall with a Don Corleone-like millionaire Boss Dolpo (Peque Gallaga) after the latter turns out to be an eccentric gourmand.
Jacko sells his three-year-old Italian restaurant to the Don. In a fit of culinary camaraderie, the gambling lord slash gourmand allows Jacko to stay on as a partner in the restaurant, to take care of its operations. There's a hitch, though: Boss Dolpo hired a consultant, Jacko’s former girlfriend Cassie (Angel Jacob) and together, they are tasked to whip up the local cuisine into something international.
The film is beautifully shot and designed, showing lavish Bacolod urban life, the province’s rich culinary specialties, and the quirky, if not exaggerated, Negrense regard for sweets. The funny dialogue and peculiar scenes are the best assets of the movie, making up for the melodramatic parts.
Probably to maintain its indie appeal despite a mainstream plot, there are numerous one-shot stories, entirely different from the main plot, that are smartly inter-mingled. Viewers don’t just see actors Vasquez and Jacob bantering and flirting on-screen; they see Joel Torre as a prehistoric caveman, Ron Lazaro as a hungry meat-loving father and other personalities whose only similarities to the main characters are their love for food and the sing-song dialect.
The verdict: Expect "Namets" to leave a sugary taste in your mouth. Don’t expect too much though, what you see is basically what you get—but with a little something witty thrown in.

Grabe ang sweets! Watch the trailer bala.

Scintillating Southern Shoot
Put together 50 models as well as creative and production staff and take them to Langub Resort, a fast-emerging tourist destination in Sipalay City for that Scintillating Southern Shoot. That's what the Bacolod Association of Models did July 26-28 in its most elaborate production so far following its mountain setting at Mambukal last year and its sizzling summer pictorial in Jomabo Resort in Escalante.
The shoot featured a collection of 10 themes, reflecting the creations of local designers and collections fro, Pale Bleue, Fetish and Urban Chic. The designers were Jan Jan Ditching and Kelly Cuachon (for bridal gowns), Silah Chua for groom suits, stylish wear by Arielle Apuyon and haute couture collections of Nicolo Yulo.
The Southern Shoot served as a reunion of sorts for members of three BAM batches – Kevin Zaldarriaga, Macy Dongon, Jeric Villanueva, Krishiel Katague, Jacky Acebuque and Nikki Drilon of the pioneering group who were joined by Jan Marie Vega, Nathaniel Sison, Katryn Rigby, Adam Nerpiol, Mariel Unson, Marty Laoang, Karlu Tan, Angelo Araneta, Tanya Lopigco and Reggie Valenzuela of the second batch as well as third batch models Ian Villa, Chris Abelarde, Al Abelarde and Martina Yusay.
The shoot was a joint effort of the BAM agency, the Provincial Tourism Office, the Provincial Environmental Management Office through Olive Seruelo, Mayor Manolet Escalante, Oliver Dondonay of the Negros Island Tourism, Inc., Jun Alejano, Robert Palic and Demmy and Ancai Pali, owners of the Sugar Beach Resort at Langub.
It was produced by BAM Manager Cleofe Tan with Sonny Cabahug as creative director, Gerald Dacles as photo director with Chuck Go, Edgar Pama, Franz Doctora and Coy Francis comprising the photo team, Carlos Durana, BAM talent agent, who did the models' hair and make-up, stylist Nicolo Yulo as well as production assistants Castel Ton, JP Alejano, Lino Pascua and Edna Sanchez

Papal nuncio blesses
Bacolod gov’t center
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO
;
The Bacolod City Government Center is the symbol of the dedication and care for the common good that the good people in the Bacolod City government render to the inhabitants of this city, Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philippines, who blessed the facility, yesterday said.
It is a happy coincidence that the Bacolod Government Center has been formally blessed on the very eve of the consecration of Bacolod’s native son, Bishop-elect Gerardo Alminaza, Adams said.
He said they thank Alminaza for accepting the Holy Father’s appointment for him to be auxillary bishop for Jaro.
“In blessing this center, we have also invoked the Lord’s favor on all those who will come here and especially on all those who will work here in order to serve the people and city of Bacolod,” Adams also said.
He said public servants contribute to the tempo of progress of their communities and to building a peaceful and more humane society, something that is beautifully in keeping with the values of the gospel of Jesus Christ. To this end they work together extending a friendly hand to their fellow citizens, he added.
Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia said the government center would not have been possible without the guidance and inspiration of the people of Bacolod, who inspired them and re-assured them during the May 2007 election that, indeed, they wanted the facility.
“We are very pleased that no less than the Apostolic Nuncio has come to bless this new facility which we now call our new home,” he said.
The mayor cited Psalm 127:1 that says “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it.”
Leonardia said this is a historic moment for Bacolod City because this is the very first time they have an official function in the facility which the city has dreamed of for 40 years. “Inspite of the rough seas, the tornadoes and hurricanes, we have survived and that dream of 40 years ago is now a reality,” he said.
Leonardia said there would not have been a government center without the civic consciousness and the pure generosity of the family of the late Don Fernando Gonzaga, whose death anniversary was also yesterday.

We’re investing in regions: Villar
Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Villar said their family, through their property firm, Vista Land and Lifescapes Inc., is investing in the regions to help propel development outside Metro Manila.
“We're investing in the regions. In every major city, we are investing. (Senate President Manuel Villar) believes that we have to go and invest in our regions to show the people that we really have faith in the country,” she said.
Villar was among the guests at the meeting of the Chamber of Real Estate and Builders' Association-Negros Occidental Chapter in Bacolod City Saturday. The Villars made their fortune in real estate development.
Camella Communities, a company of Vista Land and Lifescapes Inc., considered as the country’s largest homebuilder, recently launched its first Bacolod development project, Camella Meridian, a 27-hectare residential subdivision in Brgy. Mandalagan.
Villar said her husband, who is running for president in 2010, wants to make a difference by advocating for good governance through the use of government resources to help the poor.
“We cannot say that all the problems will be solved but the good intention is always there,” she said.*NLG

Can you please recommend hotels that are near the city and near the street action/parade? Appreciate your input. Migo I have checked with PHIVOLCS but they still don't have their N. Negros earthquake posted in the site but I believe that what caused that Aug 2, 2008 2:20 AM earthquake was a shallow, local fault along the shores of Manapla and Cadiz City. in 2005 A Magnitude 4.5 earthquake also hit the same area but it was nearer Ajuy. In 2001, a nearer fault splay just near Cadiz City caused a magnitude 3 earthquake in 2001. Large scale earthquakes in Western Visayas are usually originating from Panay, specifically Antique, Southern Iloilo and Aklan due to the Tablas Fault and Central Panay Collission Zone (1948 and 1990 earthquakes). We don't have active faults in Negros but some fault splays in Sipalay and Himamaylan could give out small tremors sometimes :ohno::cheers:

The title "Sunshine City" was given by Manila Broadcasting Company's (MBC) AM Station in Bacolod, DYEZ. If you still have stickers of those it looks nice with a sunrise bordered by a rainbow. I saw their ad in the 1976 Bacolod City Yearbook. Even my mother still remembers the music/plug of DYEZ of "Sunshine City"...he he hehe.....another reason why it was a "Sunshine City" is due to the title "Cleanest City in the Philippines" in 1965 (?) under former Mayor Rodolfo Guanzon :banana::banana::banana::banana:

BACOLOD

Hi there, I noticed that you're everywhere.... you speak different dialects :). Anyway, I'm going to Masskara festival this October (already booked a ticket) and will spend in Bacolod for 2 days/3 nights. Can you please recommend hotels that are near the city and near the street action/parade? Appreciate your input. I've been to Sinulog several times but excited to see the Maskara festival as this our first time with a group.

DLNHS Senior clouters
start World Series campaign
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Barely getting over their jet lag, the Senior League girls' 14-16 softball squad from Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City, begin their 2008 World Series campaign today in Lowe Sussex, Delaware in the United States.
Mentored by Tony Oquindo, the Bacolod clouters, who will banner the Asia-Pacific campaign, have drawn US-Central, represented by a team from South Bend, Indiana, for its first assignment. Game time is set at 8 p.m. Sunday (Monday morning in the Philippines).
Leading the campaign of the Bacolod City girls’ are World Series veterans Analie Benjamen and Cherry An Basco, who were members of the Little League team that posted back-to-back second runner-up finishes in 2004 and 2005.
The Philippines' best finish in the Senior League tournament is third place, a feat it accomplished in 2004 by the same Bacolod team that topped the Junior League division in 2003 in Kirkland, Washington.
Aside from the Seniors’ team, Bacolod players are also representing the country in the Major League (11-12) and the Juniors (13-14), after topping the Asia-Pacific regional tournaments held in Guangzhou, China last month.
The Major little leaguers from Education Training Center School in Bacolod, will leave for Portland, Oregon later this week for their Aug. 7-13 tournament while the Juniors team left for Manila last night to process their papers with the U.S. Embassy for their Aug. 10-16 competition in Kirkland, Washington.
The Manila Big League softball team, powered by Adamson University standouts, with almost half of its members coming from Bacolod City, will vie in Kalamazoo, Michigan from August 11 to 16.
In baseball, the International Little League Association of Manila will try to improve on its second-place finish last year when it sees action in the Junior League tournament in Taylor, Michigan starting August 11.
Another ILLAM team will gun for the title in the Senior League tournament in Bangor, Maine beginning Aug. 10.
The ILLAM squads will leave for the US on Aug. 8,manager Kathy Tanco-Ong said.*NAB

Japanese firm set to
repair airport cracks
BY CARLA GOMEZ
The Japanese contractor that built the New Bacolod Silay Airport in Silay City will undertake the repairs on itsdamaged terminal caused by an earthquake that struck Saturday, airport manager Antonio Alfonso said yesterday.
An intensity 6 quake caused hairline cracks in some walls and dislodged acoustic boards of the terminal ceiling.
Representatives of Takenaka Corp., the Japanese contractor that built theP5.6 billion airport, yesterday were still assessing the damageto determine the costs and had not submitted a full report yet,Alfonso said.
Alfonso assured that the airport is safe, pointing out the damage to it was minor and does not indicate that its construction was substandard.
Gov. Isidro Zayco said there was nothing to be alarmed about, because despite being hit by an intensity 6 quake, the cracks in the airport were minor.
The Manila International Airport Authority had earlier also questioned the work of Takenaka at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3.*CPG

i like second photo, the drama of water and the boat by the bank, with rushing water from afar.
the last time i stayed at mambukal, i lay back at the edge of the small wooden port, really relaxing, listening to the water splash, and feel the cool night breeze. and i end up dipping in the hot spring after an hour or so.

what is that from afar the second pic? looks somebody is sitting or something.
i like second photo, the drama of water and the boat by the bank, with rushing water from afar.
the last time i stayed at mambukal, a lay back at the edge of the small wooden port, really relaxing, listening to the water splash, and feel the cool night breeze. and i end up dipping in the hot spring after an hour or so.
now that explains your tanned skin :) hehehehehe i was checking the pic...its water rushing from a pipe...you scared me ha. :) hahahaha i thought it was something :)

Pope congratulates Alminaza
BY CARLA GOMEZ
It was a day of celebration as 2,500 Roman Catholics applauded the ordination of Negrense priest Gerardo Almaniza as the new auxiliary bishop of Jaro and joyously sang happy birthday at the San Sebastian Cathedral in Bacolod City yesterday, amid fireworks from the grounds outside.
Alminaza also turned 49 yesterday.
“May the continuing power of the Holy Spirit be with you as you begin today to carry on this sacred mission,” said Archbishop Edward Joseph Adams, Papal Nuncio to the Philipines, who led the ordination rites attended by about 18 bishops, four archbishops and more than 200 priests.
“Pope Benedict XVI, our father in Rome, sends his best wishes and congratulations,” Adams said.
“Through a bishop the wisdom and understanding Chirst himself guides us in our earthly journey towards heaven,” Adams said.
“Keep watch over the whole flock which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to shepherd,” Adams told Alminaza.
Bacolod Bishop Vicente Navarra, who delivered the homily, said “We offer you (Alminaza) as our diamond gift to the Archdiocese of Jaro and the Church.”
The Diocese of Bacolod is currently celebrating its 75th jubilee as a diocese.
Archbishop Angel Lagdameo, president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines, said “I am so happy that I now have in my graying years an auxilliary bishop who will be my partner in serving the archdiocese of Jaro.”
“He is not only the answer to the prayers of his parents who waited for him for almost eight years before he was born, he is also the answer to my prayers because I have asked the Holy Father that I be given an auxiliary in Jaro,” Lagdameo said.
Alminaza is the third auxiliary bishop of Jaro, his two predecessors having become archbishops, Lagdameo said.
Lagdameo refused to discuss concerns over the controversial Value Added Tax and the reproductive health bill that he has sharply criticized in the past, “It is not the opportune time to talk about it, this is a very pleasant time to enjoy at this moment.”
Alminaza, who has adopted the motto “Sicut Christus Vivit (As Christ Lives)”, said he is aware that the gift of being a bishop was not for him, “but to build the body of Christ wherever God sends me.”
Alminaza, an only child of Felix and Antonia Alminaza, was born on Aug 4., 1959 in Barangay San Jose, Sipalay, Negros Occidental.
His 79-year-old wheelchair bound father was at his ordination yesterday. His mother passed away in 2002.
“It is just my father and I left in our family and I will take him where I go,” Alminaza said.
Alminaza thanked his parents and all those who have been part of his life and helped him in the journey to becoming a bishop.
Had Columban priest Fr. Brian Gore failed him when he took his entrance examination to the seminary he would not be a bishop today, Alminaza said. It was then Bacolod Bishop Antonio Fortich who ordained him as a priests on April 29, 1986 and inspired him, the new bishop added.
Also present at the rites were Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco, Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella and Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia.*CPG

One more outsourcing firm sets up shop in Bacolod City
08/06/2008 | 03:58 AM
BACOLOD CITY, Philippines — A US-based company is set to open a small-scale call center here this year, joining three more outsourcing companies that have come here to take advantage of the city’s skilled work force.
Lone Star Global IT Solutions, owned by John Burdick of Houston, Texas, will provide outbound telemarketing services to clients in the United States, said Councilor Jocelle Batapa-Sigue, who heads the Bacolod Negros Federation for Information and Communications Technology, Inc.
The call center will be located at the East IT Center, an information technology economic zone accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
Lone Star will also undertake data entry and encoding, design and implementation, and operation of office business process such as outsourced customer support services.
These include sales and marketing support, customer care, technical support, data management services and customer relations management.
Ms. Batapa-Sigue said the firm’s recruitment officer is looking for agents with at least six months of experience in the call center industry.
She said the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry in Bacolod continues to grow as Lone Star Global IT Solutions comes to the city along with other IT enterprises.
"As foreign players venture into Bacolod, local leaders should seriously undertake more human resource programs to sustain the gains of the IT and BPO industry," she said.
She noted that while Bacolod has promoted itself as one of the next wave of cities identified by the Business Process Association of the Philippines, the responsibility does not end there.
"The task becomes more difficult because we have to come up with more programs in response to industry demands, especially manpower," she pointed out.
At present, the city hosts three major call centers — Teleperformance, TeleTech and Convergys.
It has five special economic zones proclaimed as ICT parks and buildings, and these sites are now the workplaces of almost 4,000 employees.
These include Luxur Plaza IT Centre, the site of Teleperformance at the old Bacolod Convention Plaza Hotel; East Block IT Centre and Bacolod IT Park, both declared as IT parks.
The East Block is being occupied by First International Document Masters, Inc. and Intervoice Technologies, Inc., an insourcing company.
Others are the Robinsons Cybergate Center occupied by Teletech, and Monfort IT Centre occupied by Focus Pacific Communications.
Convergys is occupying One SanParq, the first and only built-to-suit Philippine Economic Zone Authority-registered information technology center in Western Visayas. — Nanette Guadalquiver, BusinessWorld

SENIOR WORLD SERIES
DLNHS girls win against EMEA
BY NIDA BUENAFE
Asia Pacific Senior softball girls champion from Domingo Lacson National High School in Bacolod City registered their first victory in the 2008 World Series Championship in Delaware, USA yesterday with a 3-1 win against the Europe Middle East Africa team represented by KMC American Little from Ramstein AFB, Germany.
The win boosted the spirits of the Bacolod girls who bowed to Indiana District 11, 10-1, in their first game Sunday, played several hours after the team arrived in Lower Sussex, Delaware.
After a scoreless first and second innings, the DLNHS girls scored two runs in the fourth inning and another one in the fifth while EMEA failed to add another point to its credit after its lone run in bottom-four.
It was a hard-earned victory for the girls from Bacolod City who valiantly fought a losing battle against Indiana in Day 1 with pitcher Julie Marie Muyco scoring the run in the sixth inning.
Described in the Word Series website as “a real pitchers battle”, the game featured an impressive performance from both teams with the Asia Pacific champions striking out 5 of 6 batters of the Indiana.
However, the Asians were kept off the bases by the Indiana infield as Tara Hicks scored two home runs and walks in a run in the fourth.
A seven-run for the Indiana squad in the bottom of the sixth inning sealed the victory for the American team.*NAB

NSCA grad tops agriculturist exam
A graduate of the Negros State College of Agriculture in Kabankalan City, Clark Noquera Melendres, 21, landed second in the licensure examination for agriculturists held in July, a press release said.
His score was 85.33 percent with topnotcher, an examinee from the University of the Philippines at Los Baños, scoring 85.67.
Dr. Freddie Maningo, NSCA president, said the college faculty, students, personnel and the community are happy and proud over Melendres’ performance, adding that the feat follows the Best in Governance in the Public Sector Award presented by President Arroyo to NSCA during the recent regional competition spearheaded by the Regional Development Council.
“His performance has given us great pride,” Maningo said.
NSCA Agriculture Dean Milagros Antonio said six other NSCA graduates – Jenny Babe Gigato and Melissa Gierza, both Agribusiness majors; Ramie Baylosis and ******* Gepolani (Crops Science) and Francis Canal and Randy Tayhon (Animal Science) – also passed the 2008 agriculturists’ exam.
Melendres, who is from Ayungon, Valladolid, completed his elementary education in his barangay and high school at Ramon Torres National High School-Sagasa.
He is the fourth of the seven children of Casiano and Elma Melendres.
He is presently training under PhilRice at Midsayap in Cotabato.*

AFTER receiving a national award last week for being chosen as the 'Best Junior Police Community Relations (PCR) Officer of the Year' at Camp Crame, Cadiz City Police Chief Jefferson Descallar was also given a plaque of merit by the Regional Director Isagani Cuevas during the culminating ceremony of the 13th PCR Month celebration of the Police Regional Office.
The PCR Section of the Cadiz City PNP is also the 'Best PCR Section of the Year' in the city police station category. The award was received by PO2 Generoso Melen, Cadiz City PCR police non-commissioned officer.
The Cadiz City PNP had been a recipient of a number of local and national awards since Descallar assumed the post as CoP in 2006, including leading the unit to its best among police stations in the province for placing number in the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office unit performance evaluation for the 1st and 2nd quarters and number two for the 3rd and 4th quarters last year.
He is also instrumental in making the unit the best in the field of PCR in Negros Occidental and in Western Visayas which brought the unit to the limelight as the 'Best in PCR' nationwide (city police stations category) for 2007 and the 'Most Citizen-Friendly Police Station in Western Visayas' (highly urbanized/component city category), 'Best Urban Women and Children Protection Center' (regionwide) which again led the station to the fame of being the 'Best WCPD' (urban category, nationwide), also for last year.
Some of the highlighted features of the station which contributed much to the attainment of the overall mission and objectives of the Philippine National Police are projects like 'Oplan: Gamit Paaralan,' 'Kahoy Para sa Eskwela,' 'Alkansya sa Eskwela,' play with the elderly program for the senior citizens, 'Tinig ng Kilos' program for the hearing-impaired and 'Ang Pulis at ang may Kapansanan' livelihood program for persons with disabilities.
Other awardees from Negros Occidental are Supt. Violeta Noblezada for 'Senior PCR Officer of the Year' and PO2 Joni Mary More for 'Junior PCR Police Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year'.

well...i don't know if you guys know RSB...the crony of the Marcos regime in Negros...they pretty much manipulated the sugar prices in the late 70's up to the 80;s....that basically led to the downfall of the once mighty sugar industry in Buglas..the sugar planters hate them so much during that time..and until now i guess...Imelda was really pissed-off with the arrogance of the Hacienderos....

SUV, the downfall of one civilization is one of the parts of history that we should learn. Because of these downfalls, we may know the mistakes and therefore take-off.
Its very interesting to read the accounts of the downfalls of Iloilo in the 1950s and of Negros in 1980s. They are really an eye-opener to socio-economic situations of the oast.
Of course, as what Ambeth Ocampo said, let us not be prisoners of history. Therefore, we learn from the stumbling and rise up once more. It gives a humbling experience to us all that we've experienced the highs and the lows of society and economy. :)

Himamaylan runners undergo high altitude training
MEMBERS of the Himamaylan City marathon team who have booked berths in this year's National Milo Marathon Finals slated November 30 in Manila are undergoing intensive high altitude training in Barangay San Atonio, Himamaylan City, in preparation for the national Milo event.
"We do road run here in Bacolod regularly usually after classes but there's no substitute for training in the up-and-down terrain of Barangay San Antonio since it helps us build our resistance," said Iloilo Milo Marathon leg champion Anthony Babiera, a member of the West Negros University varsity athletics team.
Babiera said this is why Bacolod leg champion Eric Panique, fourth placer in last year's national finals, still has the edge compared to the other leg winners from Himamaylan City because he trains regularly in the hilly terrain of Barangay San Antonio.
"If he continues to train in San Antonio until November while we remain here in Bacolod I think there's no way we can beat him in the national finals," Babiera told Sun.Star Bacolod in an interview Wednesday.
Julius Sermona, the Himamaylan City native who won the national Milo Marathon crown in 2006, once said he foresees Panique "will one day win the national Milo title due to his talent, discipline and dedication."
Sermona, a Philippine Air Force enlisted man, skipped this year's National Milo Marathon eliminations in favor of campaigning for the country in the Asian Athletics Grand Prix international competitions as the RP team's bet in 5,000 and 10,000 meters.
Himamaylan runners have secured seven slots to this year's Milo Marathon national finals. Aside from Panique and Babiera, the others are Bacolod leg 21K second placer Rowel Hulleza, Iloilo leg second placer Raden Vergara, Roxas City leg third placer Romel Hulleza, as well as female runners Allyn Grace Salas, who finished second in Bacolod and former Iloilo leg winner Irene Apuhin, who finished third in Iloilo this year.
The Himamaylan marathon squad is mentored by Hernani Bolivar with 1982 National Milo Marathon titlist Rodolfo Rizalde as trainer.
"We are proud of our runners and we are committed to support them as a translation of our avowed commitment to youth development through sports," Himamaylan City Mayor Carminia Bascon told Sun.Star Bacolod in an earlier interview. (HCV)

are these the benedictos who conspired with the marcos' regime in destroying the Sugar Industry??
hahahahaha!!!! alright!! now everythings coming out from the nutshell :):lol::lol:
man these people really made a lot of money...and until now one way or the other they are still in power...Negrenses in general seems to have forgotten....:ohno:
Were the Benedictos one of the reasons to blame for the sugar crisis that crippled Bacolod and Negros Occidental during the 1980's?
other say yes while there are some who say no ,depending on which side of the fence you are in. there were those who benefitted and there were others who felt they were robbed. i know of one family who really made a fortune while under rsb's fold. "weather-weather" lang. but give it to the man. he made it to the top echelon of the marcos dynasty armed with sheer talent and guts and a lot of luck. but he died a "poor" , lonely man in a latin american country away from his family. that's the price he had to pay. let bygones be by gones.:)
wow, we are flooded with beautiful pics again. its like i'm having a tour around the city. many thanks @elijahboi...:banana::banana:

well..that's true with the way business and politics go in the philippines...but unfortunately it caused the sugar industry's downfall in general...well him dying so away in his country maybe karma..but anywayz..it may have been a blessing in disguise..it made Negros more dynamic...instead of just focusing in sugar by itself...yep...with the imminent opening of more ethanol plants in the province hopefully it would spur more development not only for Bacolod but also for the outlying cities and towns...:)
I remember Carlos Locsin's quote:
"The greatest thing in Negros' economy is the downfall of sugar industry."
This might sound pessimistic but I see this as a positive light towards diversification and veering away from monocrop agriculture dependency...which is good for the economy. :)

this is really true. the downfall of sugar industry made negros realize that we are more than just sugar...we have so many things to develop and give focus on.
