New BPO firm in Cebu

CEBU City’s business process outsourcing industry continues to grow as another contact center is set to start operations by November.

ICT Philippines, a member of the American firm ICT Group, met with representatives of the Cebu City Government and the academe last Monday to present an overview of the company and what it can offer the city.

John Langford, executive vice president for Philippine operations, said the company will start with 500 seats with an option to expand to 750, depending on the performance of its Cebu team.

“We will begin training the agents by the end of October,” he said.

With this, ICT will hold a job convention on Sept. 20 and invite 20 graduating students from each school to participate in the activity.

Job convention

The job convention, which will be held at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino, will allow ICT to present what the company offers its employees. A mock interview will also be conducted during the activity.

Langford said the meeting with local school representatives is an initial step for the company to establish its partnership with the Cebu academe.

Representatives from the University of San Carlos, Southwestern University, University of the Philippines Cebu College, Velez College, Asian College of Technology, University of Cebu, University of San Jose-Recoletos and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation joined the meeting hosted by ICT last Monday.

In Manila, the company implements a training program that enhances the English communication skills of students in partner schools. Langford said the same module will be made available to Cebu schools.

Proficiency in English communication is now the number one challenge facing the BPO industry, Langford said.

Five centers

The Nasdaq-listed company began operations in 1987 at its headquarters in Newtown, Pennsylvannia. It opened its first center in Makati, Philippines last April 2003 with 200 seats.

After five years of operation, ICT now has five centers in Luzon. Its operations at the Cebu IT Tower located within the Cebu Business Park will be its first site in the Visayas.

Out of a total workforce of 22,000 worldwide, ICT employs 7,500 in the Philippines.

Langford admitted that it took a while for the company to open a center in Cebu because he thought that the city is already a saturated market.

But two of the company’s clients insisted that ICT set up operations in Cebu.

Langford said the proximity of business and recreational features—like beaches—make Cebu an attractive destination.

As part of its expansion efforts in the country, ICT is now looking at “second tier cities” where it can set up additional operations. Second tier cities include Bacolod (Negros Occidental), Iloilo and Dumaguete (Oriental Negros) in the Visayas

Macias backs Zayco on 1-island state bid
GOVERNORS TO TACKLE FEDERALISM IN CEBU

Gov. Emilio Macias II, left, doubts Cha-cha will take place but agrees with Gov. Isidro Zayco on a one-island federal state.*

Negros Oriental Gov. Emilio Macias II yesterday said that if a federal form of government is adopted, he prefers to have his province and Negros Occidental form a one-island state.

Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco had earlier also said he would much rather have his province merge with Negros Oriental for a Negros Island Federal State.

Senate Joint Resolution No. 10 on the shift to federalism proposes the creation of 11 federal states with Negros Oriental falling under Central Visayas and Negros Occidental under Western Visayas.

daw madayon gid mga migs ang one-island state under a federal philippines. both governors of the twin negros provinces have already agreed...

Old traditions die hard, and it seems that the concept of the One State of Negros is the closest thing that we could get from the legacy of the hacienderos of the Revolutionary Philippines, when they established a Cantonal Republic of Negros sometime in late 1890's. :)

the capitol building in lagoon would still serve as the seat of the provincial government i think. what would happen with kabankalan is that it would be the state capital.

^^dumduman ko sang una migs sang nagtuhaw ang one island region nga daw didto gid man ang proposed regional capital during sa time pa ni gov. coscolluela kag si gov. zayco mayor pa sang kabankalan. may landmark na to gani sang una between tagukon kag mabinay and there was a proposal to build a hospital in that area to be funded jointly by both provinces. this issue of choosing a state capital will be one hot topic if this plan pushes through. there will be compromises and this will be one of them; to meet halfway. well, anything can happen now. but bacolod will still be bacolod and dumaguete will still be dumaguete. nothing will change. take the case of the state of california, their state capital is sacramento, but LA and frisco are still their premier cities in terms of commerce and trade.:)

let me clarify... provincial capitol would be still in bacolod. but i believe they are going to make another capitol, that is intended for the state and that would be the state capitol. for example, if and only if, there will be the Negros State and under Negros State are the two provinces, Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental. Oriental Negros having Dumaguete as its provincial capital and Bacolod as the provincial capital of Negros Occidental. Kabankalan just in case would be the State Capital.

^^they can make both capitol buildings the official residence of the governor (the malacañang) whenever he is in each cities. that's the closest we can make use of those buildings. i kinda confused here. if we become a federal state, which means we are one, the provincial thing i think ceases to exist. we will then be governed by only one governor and each districts will be represented by state legislators. we will also be entitled to electing senators and congressmen who will represent us in the central government.

Relax guys, according to the current situation of debates in the Senate, it would still go beyond 2010. What we have right now from 2008-2010 might be series of public consultations and orientation regarding federalism and its implications. We still have to disseminate to those who does not understand what is the difference between a federal republic and a present republic.

Bacolod City (10 September) -- San Carlos City Mayor Eugenio Jose Lacson turned over recently a newly constructed three-classroom building and newly installed 25 kva transformer for the Julio Ledesma National High School to Asst. Schools Division Superintendent, Nelly Valerio.

The three-classroom building cost the city government P2.750 million while the 25kva transformer with wirings and halogen lamps amounted to P 650,000.

The building is only a part of the planned three-storey, nine-classroom building project of the city. (PIA/cad) [top]

Roxas Holdings to go into port services (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=2008090914&type=2)

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

Sugar milling conglomerate Roxas Holdings Inc. is planning to enter the highly-competitive port services business through CADP Port Services Inc., a newly-organized company.

CADP Port Services Inc. has already applied for business registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission with an initial authorized capital stock of P2 million.

Listed as its primary purpose is “to engage in the general business of providing port ancillary services such as port cargo handling, arrastre and stevedoring, shoring, cleaning, rebundling, rebagging and other related services on board vessels.”

Out of the P2-million capitalization, P500,000 has been subscribed and P124,995 has been paid for by Roxas Holdings.

Roxas Holdings has been aggressively expanding its businesses with the acquisition of two sugar mills abroad and its diversification into bioethanol production.

The group, through Central Azucarera Don Pedro, remains the largest producer of raw sugar in the country and the second largest refiner in the country contributing 19 percent and 20 percent of annual production, respectively.

Roxas Holdings earlier obtained loans amounting to P6.7 billion from various financial institutions – P4.7 billion from Banco De Oro, P1.5 billion from the Bank of the Philippine Islands, and P500 million from Rizal Commercial Banking Corp.

The loan facility will be used to bankroll the group’s expansion program which includes the establishment of an ethanol plant in Negros Occidental to capitalize on the opportunities brought about by the passage of the Biofuels Act of 2006, which mandates the use of locally sourced biofuels.

Slated for completion this year, the ethanol plant has an estimated capacity of 100,000 liters a day or 30 million liters yearly.

The purchase of new mills is expected to bring down the group’s operational costs, particularly on fuel, and will serve as a take-off point for the group’s entry into the energy sector. — Zinnia Dela Peña

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

A resident of Brgy. 12, Bacolod City, has filed before the Bacolod City Prosecutor’s Office criminal and administrative charges against 17 officials of Bacolod City and the Dynasty Agricultural Corp. for the purchase of the new dumpsite in Brgy. Felisa.

Charges for violation of the Anti-Graft and Corrupt Practice Act and grave misconduct and acts prejudicial to public interest were filed by Sarah Teresa Esguerra against Mayor Evelio Leonardia, Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson, Councilors Greg Gasataya, Homer Bais, Dindo Ramos, Wilson Gamboa Jr., Al Victor Espino, Roberto Rojas, Napoleon Cordova, Alex Paglumotan, Reynold Iledan, Diosdado Valenzuela, City Legal Officer Allan Zamora, City Treasurer Annabelle Badajos, Acting City Engineer Teresita Guadalupe, City Administrator Maphilindo Polvora and Dynasty Agricultural Corp. represented by Ester Lopez.

Esguerra claimed that public officials entered into a transaction manifestly and grossly disadvantageous to the Bacolod City Government by buying a parcel of lots in Brgy. Felisa on July 25, 2008 to be used as solid waste disposal facility and said the purchase was exorbitant, extravagant and beyond the proper price limits.

She said that on April 3, 2008, Leon Moya, vice president of Moya-Guanzon and Sons Farms wrote Gasataya, who spearheaded the committee for the purchase of the city’s landfill site being offered by Dynasty Agricultural Corp., informing the city authorities that it is willing to sell its 160,833 square meter property in Cabug at P80 per square meters.

Esguera said the city officials concentrated on buying the 70,000 square meter property of DAC for P340 per square meters, or a total of P23,800 instead of using the 61.66 hectares of land in the same area which was acquired by the city through forfeiture.

It said the City Assessment Committee, in its committee report, recommended the appraised value of the lots in Brgy. Felisa at P360 per square meter, a sharp contrast to the Bureau of Internal Revenue zonified valuation of Felisa which classified agricultural lots at P100 per square meters.

Polvora, chairman of the appraisal committee, said earlier that the property purchased by the Bacolod City government in Brgy. Felisa for its landfill site is not overpriced because there was valid basis for the determination of the fair market value of the property.

He said they based the computation on Republic Act 8974 which provides that, in expropriation and negotiated sale, the zonal valuation of the BIR can be used as basis.

He said the zonal valuation of the BIR in Brgy. Felisa is P400 per square meter.

Polvora said that the records of the City Assessor’s Office for zonal valuation is designed for tax purposes only and not for the determination of fair market value.

Zamora said the purchase of the property went through the process and was based on the recommendation of the appraisal committee.

Gasataya said that the 60-hectare Moya property has no social acceptability because of the continuing opposition of the residents.

Leonardia said he has not yet received a copy of the complaint. But apparently, there is no doubt this come from people in the group of the congressman, he said, referring to Bacolod Rep. Monico Puentevella.

Puentevella in response said “The mayor should read the signs, there is a growing discontentment among Bacoleños on the perceived anomalies and corruption. City Hall should answer the issues squarely instead of diverting them.”*CGS

Negros Oriental Gov. Emilio Macias II yesterday said that if a federal form of government is adopted, he prefers to have his province and Negros Occidental form a one-island state.

Anyway, that's their opinion. What is better is to employ people so that they could earn living. Earning living means expenditure. Expenditure means a good stable market. And if we are to follow the capitalist leanings, then it should give us prosperity....So pride doesn't take place anywhere but only for the welfare of the citizens of a locale. ;)

In economics, "saturated" doesn't mean that it will slow down and decline. Rather it is already reaching its capacity...yet there is a space for further expansion.

So, before concluding "saturation" is a word of "hisa/envy," please do think again. I see this as a word of competition instead of hisa-ay, because for one we already recognize that you folks are already leading the way. ;) Second, BPOs are not only for specific places. Policymakers think beyond pride and prejudice, they think about the welfare of the people...and not the titles or glory that they will receive. My 2 pesos worth. Nobody's bullying anyone here. ;) :2cents:

Economic growth prompts retail chain to open 3rd store
Friday, September 12, 2008
Sunstar Cebu

iSTORE, the only Apple premium reseller and gold-level Apple service provider in Cebu, opened its third retail store in the province last Tuesday at the Northwing of SM City Cebu.

Its branch in SM is the largest iStore in Cebu and showcases the complete line of Macs, iPhone 3G and iPods to all market segments.

Other iStore outlets are located in Ayala Center Cebu and Banilad Town Center. Three more branches-one in Bacolod and two in Manila-are already in the pipeline and are scheduled to open before the year ends.

Apple South Asia managing director Philip Chua said the country’s retail market remains “vibrant” while Cebu’s economy is considered fast-growing, prompting iStore to provide the right positioning for its products.

He also observed that iPods are selling well locally, especially in the middle-class market segment since “the Philippines is a music country.”

Double digits

iStore’s managing director Stanley Yap said that with the opening of the new store, the company expects double-digit growth in the next two quarters.

At iStore outlets, the staff provides personalized instruction and hands-on experience for customers who want to learn about Apple products, from starting a Mac to making a home movie.

Apart from free advices, in-store demonstrations and workshops, customers can also test Apple’s entire product line, including MacBook Air and the revolutionary iPhone 3G and iPod touch.

iStore will also carry other lifestyle brands, such as Bose, JBL, Harman Kardon, Samsonite, Victorinox, Golla, Griffin, Contour, Power Support, Belkin, Western Digital, and other Mac and iPod accessories. (NRC)

Mayor Leonardia reports Bacolod’s gains in his SOCA

Edith Colmo

BACOLOD CITY — "Full speed ahead, damn the torpedoes."

This was the battle cry issued by Bacolod Mayor Evelio R. Leonardia when he delivered his two-and-half-hour state-of-the-city address (SOCA) at the New Government Center (NGC) here.

He presented his 52-page accomplishment report that covered the period from July 2007 to June 2008.

On fiscal management, he reported for the first time in the history of Bacolod, the city government has a R1-billion budget this year.

He cited the city’s economic growth that enabled thousands of Bacolod residents to get jobs that came as a result of the establishment of giant malls and call centers.

Other accomplishments of his administration include infrastructure projects undertaken by the city government and the private sector, livelihood development, tourism, regional and national gatherings of government and private organizations and improved health care and education services.

Leonardia also enumerated his flagship projects. The include the new Bacolod slaughterhouse which was built in partnership with AVM Bernardo Constructions, construction of a new dumpsite in compliance with Republic Act 9003, lighting of streets of Bacolod, and the NGC.

He said the NGC will house all city government offices, and makes it as "one-stop shop" for people transacting business with City Hall.

He thanked the city councilors and Vice Mayor Thaddy Sayson, the heads of offices, business and other sectors, and the people of Bacolod for having supported the programs of the city government.

Leonardia’s SOCA drew positive reactions from almost all sectors. The mayor was lauded for his determination to pursue various programs and projects beneficial to the people of Bacolod.

DUE to its prudent use of public resources, the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental has registered a surplus of over P270-million in funds during the first semester of 2008.

This is also supported by an increase in the Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA) share of the province, from P1.16 billion in 2007 to P1.34 billion this year.

What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers

Governor Isidro Zayco said that all transactions have been examined by auditors without any adverse findings. "We were awarded for timely submission of financial reports that comply with global reporting standards."

On tax collection, the province achieved 84.73 percent efficiency from traditional sources of revenue, including its economic enterprises, which has a gross earning or revenue of P64 million or an increase of P10 million last year.

The province is also inviting potential investors to develop several vacant and idle lands belonging to the province in Bacolod City that are for sale. This is to generate funds for the province, which Zayco said, is necessary for countryside development projects, "especially for poverty alleviation."

On procurement, the amount of P4 million was also part of the savings the province had banked from its innovative consignment system from the allocated budget of hospitals.

"Our pilot procurement service depot for common-use office supplies is now being followed in 11 other provinces in the country," Zayco noted.

Meanwhile, over P300 million of funds have been released for various priority programs and projects, grants and special projects in the first quarter of the year of which P23.7-million was distributed to the province's component cities, P48 million to the municipalities and P27.4 million for the barangays as support funds for development priorities in their localities.

This is on top of the P42.7 million for all the districts through the special project allocations of Board members, P22.7-million for various areas province-wide and P16.2-million through non-government organization partners

(NRC)

Siquijor wants to join
Negros state – Zayco
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros officials will pass a resolution pushing for the creation for a one-island state in case the country shifts towards a federal form of government, Negros Occidental Gov, Isidro Zayco said, yesterday.

Zayco and Negros Oriental Gov. Emilio Macias were in Cebu for a governor’s forum on federalism that had Senator Aquilino Pimentel as guest speaker.

Pimentel, proponent of the move towards a shift to federalism through a Constituent assembly, is proposing the creation of 11 states under what will be known as the Federal Republic of the Philippines, Zayco said.

Under Pimentel’s proposal, Negros Occidental will be part of the Western Visayas state and Negros Oriental and Siquijor will be part of the Central Visayas state.

At the open forum yesterday, Zayco said he aired the preference for Negros Occidental and Oriental to become a one-island state. The governor of Siquijor stood up and said he would like his province to be part of the Negros state, Zayco said.

Pimentel said the 11 states were just a proposal and nothing was final, so the Negros request could be studied, Zayco added.

“We will have to pass a formal resolution on our position to the Senate,” Zayco said.

Under the federal form of government, the states will be able to retain 80 percent of their income and remit only 20 percent to the national government, Zayco said.*CPG

Bacolod better than Iloilo
in terms of IT infra: exec

Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas has acknowledged that Bacolod City is ahead of his city in terms of infrastructure support for Information Technology locators.

“The problem here (in Iloilo) is that there are no existing buildings that are readily available for investors but we have good quality manpower. Our business sector here is not a risk taker, unlike in Bacolod City,” he said Wednesday.

The Iloilo Federation for Information Technology is holding its IT Week September 9 to 12.

Treñas said Iloilo City should be like Bacolod that has converted vacant commercial buildings into special economic zones for IT locators.

Bacolod City, which hosts three major call centers, with almost 4,000 workers, has five special economic zones proclaimed as IT parks and buildings.

In Iloilo City, Amigo Mall was the first to be proclaimed as IT center in 2006, followed by Robinsons Place in 2007.

Treñas urged owners of buildings used by call center companies to apply for accreditation with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.

At present, the city and province of Iloilo, that host 12 call centers and other business process outsourcing firms, earns about P100 million in monthly revenues from its local Information Technology industry.

Regional Director Dominic Abad of the Department of Trade and Industry said the figure consists of about P30 million in salaries alone, while the rest from rentals and other payments.

Call centers and BPO companies employ about 3,000 workers in Iloilo.

“Now that we have seen the economic impact of the IT industry, I hope that we all appreciate this because we have to prepare and make Iloilo ready for other companies,” Abad told Iloilo IT stakeholders.

For 2008 alone, at least seven more BPO companies have expressed interest to relocate in Iloilo.

Abad said Iloilo must address the need for both human resources and support services for possible investors.*NLG

 Kahiligan gid sang mga Ilonggo mag-kumpara-anay. You do almost forgot that there is another emerging Ilonggo city down south (Marbel), in Mindanao...in several years time, basi mag-join the club of comparisons and occacional baisanays, hehehe!!!

But anyway, I wish we should be mature enough to understand and not run to conclusion that "ay mas maayo pa kami gali kumpara sa inyo..." because the local leaders don't think like that. Again, that's what they call benchmarking. The Iloilo leader has acknowledged the edge of Bacolod over Iloilo, and because of that they are trying and willing to encourage the business sector to move...the same thing that ILED said in the previous Iloilo Investor's Forum. Bacolod benefited from Iloilo, Iloilo benefited from Bacolod...its better to have this kind of healthy competition rather than being a monopoly, at least the wealth is evenly distributed in a region.

Here in Skyscrapercity, I hope we have the thinking of a leader and not a politician. A public servant and not a pride and ego boosting receipient. I hope we could be different from the others, as the ones who support the prime movement towards prosperity and progress. :)

Excerpts.....

Feedback
with Primo Esleyer

Gov. Isidro Zayco of Negros Occidental and Gov. Emilio Macias II of Negros Oriental are in Cebu now to take up the federal government proposal. This is dividing the country into federal states, among them Region 6 composed of West Visayas and Region 7 composed of Central Visayas.

Today both Region 6 and Region 7 are among the biggest regions.

Gov. Zayco and Gov. Macias are there to argue for an island state of Negros to be composed of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental.

In the present set up, the capital of West Visayas is Iloilo. We have to go to Iloilo to transact business as the federal capital.

Those in Negros Oriental go to Cebu.

Negros Occidental represents some 45 percent of the Region’s population. We have more people registered in the Social Security System than the five provinces of West Visayas. It’s good we have an office of Foreign Affairs here in Bacolod. More people in Negros Occidental transact with this office than any other province in the Region.

If government is to be brought closer to the people, Negros island should be made a federal state, apart from Region 6 and Region 7.

We talked with Gov. Zayco the other day and promised him we will help get some groups to pass resolutions to support the move. I talked with some media friends here and the Negros Press Club will be too happy to join. I’ll talk to media friends in Dumaguete to join us.

Many Rotary Clubs will be just too happy to join too.

Let us support this move for the benefit of Negrenses.*

Negros Occ marks 63rd Liberation Day (http://www.mb.com.ph/issues/2008/09/12/PROV20080912134984.html)

Edith Colmo

BACOLOD CITY — Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro P. Zayco exalted the heroism of World War II veterans as the province celebrated yesterday the 63rd Liberation Day.

Giving significance to the celebration, the veterans were accompanied by the governor together with the members of the provincial board at a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument of World War II veterans here.

This was followed by a simple program held at the Negros Occidental Multi-Purpose Activity Center.

With the governor were Board Members Nehemias dela Cruz, Renato Gustilo, Mae Javellana, Enrique Miguel Lacson, Patrick Lacson, police provincial director Col. Rosendo Franco, Col. Francisco Patrimonio, and the district commanders of the Armed Forces of the Philippines in Negros.

I don't know why Filipinos are elated when a new BPO company opens for business in their city. Sure, it can generate jobs, but it's not a good sign of a developing macroeconomy.

We need business that give REAL jobs, not just the ones that can compensate the rampant underemployment in the country.

One behaviour in Filipinos is the concept of "quick money" as according to our anthropology class. We Filipinos tend to get in much money in quickest time possible rather than have it invested in longue durée.

Second is that the current administration in both here and in Pilipinas encourage us to do so in this industrial sector. The economic policy of a hegemonic country often influences a weaker state. Just like what Nicolas Loney did to Iloilo City and the Negros towns and plantations which although it hastened the development due to the economy of sugar, Philippine's number one crop export during the American colonial era...It did generate jobs to the farmers on a seasonal basis, did create arrastres in the ports but in the long run, became the liability of the Ilonggo nation.

yeah right ... we need long term employers ...
or we may become like some companies in US ... here now ... gone later ... pangalit lang bala ... hehe ...
kun sagad lang mag-English mga Chinese ... i am sure these BPO cos. would have moved there ... :ohno:

BPO helps a lot in our economy ... but I think EPZs can help way far better ...
just look at Clark, Subic, Sta. Rosa, GMA and Mactan ...
Since they have the place (EPZs) ... businesses just come and get attracted to it ...
The reason why our Technicians & Engineers work over there and not back home ... kita pa ya ang nawad-an ...:ohno:

Also, if we see Singapore ... they don't have the Natural Resources ...
but they have the able Manpower (Filipinos included) ...
and since they have the people, facilities and are business-friendly ...
multi-national companies (or MNCs) tend to put-up their Regional Offices there ...
as long as politics in our country remains unstable ... we'll continue to live in poverty's doom ...:bash:

just my 2 cents ... :2cents:

for whatever its worth migs, its still a job and we filipinos are desperate in looking for one. i think we need to look at the multiplier effects of these bpo companies to our economy. it creates jobs as well as it creates industries. and just like tourism, its almost an unpredictable industry just as manufacturing is or any other businesses are. we need to have a sound economic fundamentals in place if this country is hell bent serious in developing its macroeconomy. just my thought.:)

http://i415.photobucket.com/albums/pp233/cafebacolod/12Buildings/oldpics01aplazamartcb.jpg

The original building standing on this property was called the Hinojales Building. After it was gutted in a fire in the 1960s, the new Plaza Mart building arose.

The building still stands today at the corner of San Juan and Gonzaga Streets.

Guys, I invite you to join me in rebuilding Bacolod's glorious past on the web. If you have any old pictures of Bacolod City or even new pictures of old structures, just post it on the forum stated in the pic.

This will be our legacy to futur generations who may not have seen Bacolod in the sugar boom days.

I don't know why Filipinos are elated when a new BPO company opens for business in their city. Sure, it can generate jobs, but it's not a good sign of a developing macroeconomy.

We need business that give REAL jobs, not just the ones that can compensate the rampant underemployment in the country.

from a call center employee's point of view...
because of our unstable economy, increasing prices of practically everything, difficulty of finding a "real job", and the need to feed everyone at home, working for a BPO is currently the best way to go. how much does an employee in a "real job" earn? 6k? 8k? will that suffice their needs? no... rent alone is around 4k.. plus milk, 2k/mo; electricity, 1k; water, 1k; groceries/food; 4k... "real jobs" only pay when you're overseas. otherwise, you would have to settle for a job that pays your bills... besides, working for a BPO is not a temp job for some. there are IT people, HR people, Analysts, quality assurance people, whose careers do not limit them to just working for a BPO. i think the BPO industry, particularly the call center industry is very much looked down upon, that people think it's just a "temp job" but some people think of it as a career; it will look good on your resume(as long as you stay in one company for a few years); and let's be thankful that these kids are working their @$$3$ off at night instead of bumming at home watching TV... if i'm not making any sense, i apologize, i've only had 3 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours :bash::bash::bash:

Its such a blessing there's a call center in Bacolod, here in America thousand job was lost because of outsourcing abroad....they want to bring back the call center job, for them thats a a real job.... millions of taxes was lost here. some of the city is already on budget deficit, because of the closed down of call center. so my friend we should be elated, happy and say thank you LORD for this job in Bacolod. kay man hambal nila diri... puwede ibalik ang call center biskan barato pa ang suweldo....kon ari ka sa america nadula ang imo trabaho kay nag kadto sa Bacolod guro ma suicide ka gid.... please be thankful what Gods provided....... akig sila subong sa pinas.... kay most of the big companies ara na da sa pinas, india, and china.....

I hope Bacolod's local tourism office would take notice the efforts done by most of our fellow SSC-Bcd forumers. @Smile, this one ^^ can be used for the promotion and PR of Bacolod/Negros Occ. tourism drive.

yeah right ... we need long term employers ...
or we may become like some companies in US ... here now ... gone later ... pangalit lang bala ... hehe ...
kun sagad lang mag-English mga Chinese ... i am sure these BPO cos. would have moved there ...

:2cents:

@ninja, its the sentiments of most, if not, all OFW's. If only our dear leaders would be more selfless for the sole benefit(this time) of its constituents. And not just the never ending political squabble initiated by each camp. Daw wala na katapusan na bangayay.:ohno:

^^ i also agree...these call center jobs are simply the milking cow for some fellows and should not be regarded as something temporary. These BPOs are of BIG help in alleviating poverty and unemployment, we simply cant deny the fact that they are one of the factors why our economy improved. This will give us reasons to be elated because one BPO company means money for the City and jobs for the unemployed. Lets be more practical in analyzing things and not merely base it on the books like what @jeff said :) It may not be permanent to others, some may consider it as a seasonal job but IMO, it makes everyone employed by these companies happy :)

@jeff, thanks for the compliment ha :) hahahaha :)

I really hope that this is NOT temporary for some people....because the headache of the HR are agents transferring from one call center to another. But anyway, survival is essential that is why the government reacted in such way, because its for the welfare of the people.

But my point is that I hope BPO wouldn't be another sugar economy business for the Philippines. I hope that our national government would also look onto long term economic stability thru stable jobs and the likes. We could also develop are R&D or Research and Dev't in our education sector.

I've passed and been as a call center agent and I know how important is the salary right now for the people in order to survive. My point is not theoretical and stick um at the books, but the local and national government policy that we should also look onto potential livelihoods that would bring long-term solution to unemployment and underemployment.

I hope I make things clear here because some people might see me as a contravida because of the reason that I came across the Strait. ;)

We all agree that the system really needs a lot of repairs. But the people are impatient. And who doesn't anyway? What the people need are results in action. Not "blah blah blahs". Thats why nobody in this nation of Juan dela Cruz would bother to listen to what our politicos and the so called intellectuals are saying nowadays. They maybe educated in the best schools abroad, but the thing is... where's the honey baloney?????:)

Anyway, again I would stress my part that I'm not anti-BPO as some would might have thought. I recognize its contributions in the Filipino society and economy...what I am pointing out is the government policy that I hope in the long run, they would emphasize on steady employment not only at BPOs but also other sector as well.....I hope we can improve our agriculture sector too because its a very important part in our economy as a country.

I hope I made myself to the people here.

1999 and 2001 migs ang batang Pinoy kay my little brother was a mascot of the Games

sounds exciting...bacolod is taking tourism a serious business.

is an endorsement from the chamber a requisite? that's bad indeed.:ohno:bacolod wasn't given the chance to defend its title. anyway, that's the business of politics or the politics of business, whichever way you want to call it.

yup MBCCI's endorsement to the the PCCI is a pre-requisite because they are the sponsor and its them who will evaluate...:ohno:

yeah...thats why they just can't do anything about it. Same goes to the trisikad drivers plying the city streets...no one can tell them not to and the city government is just too blind to notice it. how i wish we have someone like bayani fernando....

Amu man na muno ko ka madam elsa leonardia nga "hutik-hutikan" ya man si mayor bout that. bal-an mo migs the trisikad drivers at the CBD ka mga delikado, naga pang buno if sawayon diutay so I think gina ideyahan pa ini. We are officially called as BAGs or Bacolod Association of Guides.
Well I learned that:

VALLACAR TRANSIT (Ceres Liner, Bachelor Express and Rural Transit) is now Southeast Asia's biggest bus fleet with 18,000 registered buses.....o, hah!

The straight parallel and intersecting designs of Bacolod started in 1825 by by Fr. Ferrero (or de Pedro?) and improved by Architect (forgot ther name) Dureza - sorry pigaw ako memory guro...i will see my codigo later

A commemorative site with matching statues for the Cinco de Noviembre surrender at the city hall (old)

Brochures and tour guides will be available at the Government Center once it starts operating.

The mayor will still hold office at scheduled times in the old City Hall as a satellite.

The tourism office will be relocated to the government center. Satellite offices will be put in the old City Hall

if wala may mamalabag, the flyover will start to be constructed by June 2009..i just dont know which would go first

The true colors of the City Seal is Green and Orange as now being seen at the New Govt Center and this upcoming Masskara Festival. Its still the same except for the color. This was stressed out to give the rightful recognition to the "unrecalled" winner of the Bacolod City Seal Contest in 1967 who won P500 as the grand prize.

I recognize its contributions in the Filipino society and economy...what I am pointing out is the government policy that I hope in the long run, they would emphasize on steady employment not only at BPOs but also other sector as well.....I hope we can improve our agriculture sector too because its a very important part in our economy as a country.

I hope I made myself to the people here.

crystal clear migs.:)

repairs in our Government....it needs to be overhauled but i dont think we can still recover from the curse of having highly intellectual politicians yet done nothing to achieve every filipinos dream...

that's why migs, i want a federal philippines. that's the best option to overhaul this government. give the power back to the local executives. haven't you observed that those involved in big time scandals and anomalies are those who are in the national governemnt? be it executive, legislative or judiciary and seldom do we hear from our local executives. why? because our local leaders are closely watched. and that's the best weapon to combat corruption. make them feel we have our eyes on them or else :bash::bash::bash:

Abad said Iloilo must address the need for both human resources and support services for possible investors.*NLG

it's good that mayor treñas accepts it that bacolod is ahead of iloilo in terms of BPO....

i salute mayor treñas!:okay:

I was actually born in Negros, the town next to San Carlos City. Raised in Cebu and partially raised in Manila.

My father was once a driver of NETRAN (Negros Transit) which has now become Ceres or I guess was bought by Ceres. I'm not sure though.

wooot! dream come true for every techie ppl who wants to avail cheap products.. dugay ko nani gina wish na mag abri d sla... well, sakto hambal sang iban na halong lng kay substandard ang iban na products sang CDRKING... pero so far I have bought several items from them and never pa nagkaguba or experience problems. USB Numpad, Camera Bag, Blank DVD/CDs bought from CDRKING Iloilo and USB Gamepad shipped from CDRking Davao.

I know several small stores who are selling CDRKING products here in bacolod na very overpriced. So basi madula-an kamo benta..

Flex-fuel vehicles
pushed for Neg. Occ.
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri Saturday said his target is to make Negros Occidental the Brazil of the Philippines with 90 percent of its vehicles running on E85 by 2010.

Converting gas run vehicles to Flex-Fuel Vehicles (FFVs) running on 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline would save Negrenses a lot of money, Zubiri, who was in Negros to speak before planters from the La Carlota mill district, said.

FFVs can run on biofuels and shift back to pure gasoline when the need arises, Zubiri said. He added that his move has the support of Negros Occidental Gov. Isidro Zayco.

Call center training firm expands in Bacolod

By Lawrence Casiraya
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 16:29:00 09/15/2008

MANILA, Philippines – Call center training firm ExcelAsia is looking at training around 300 "near-hires" a month in Bacolod City.

ExcelAsia recently opened an office in Bacolod City, its first expansion after setting up in Cebu and then Metro Manila.

The company provides free training for "near-hires" or applicants who did not pass initially but require remedial training to qualify for employment.

Rita Trillo-Ugarte, ExcelAsia founder and president, said the company's Bacolod site should be able to accommodate applicants in other cities in the South and outside of Cebu.

She is optimistic about getting trainees in Bacolod alone. TeleTech and Convergys -- among the largest call center operators in the country -- have recently expanded into Bacolod and both have hired agents trained by ExcelAsia.

Bacolod was identified by the Commission of Information and Communications (CICT) as one of the 20 "next-wave" cities ready to accommodate investments in the business process outsourcing sector.

According to Bacolod's local government, there are at least five operators located in the city. Aside from Teletech and Convergys, smaller operators Teleperformance, Intervoice and Focus Pacific Communications have also set up facilities in the city.

Trillo-Ugarte added ExcelAsia has plans of opening a training facility in Baguio City, which is north of Metro Manila, later this year.

ExcelAsia said it has trained and deployed more than 16,000 call center trainees since it began in 2005.

..post ko lang ni migs ah but i'm not sure kung na-post na ini before. God bless guys! Hope to see Bacolod again soon!
