No..there is a backroom, or a studio opposite the display area. I remember seeing whole skyscrapers in makeshift shoe boxes;)
Cliff December 7th, 2003, 08:41 AM It's only one picture, but it has the twin towers that were supposed to be Singapore's tallest, which was cancelled.
http://picserver.student.utwente.nl/getpicture.php?id=543114
I took the picture from an lcd screen at the URA Gallery.:)
Monkey December 7th, 2003, 09:39 AM What a cruel reminder of what might have been! :bash:
Too bad the project was canceled! :(
Imperfect Ending December 7th, 2003, 10:26 AM What do they do after they are finish with the models anyway? Do they just throw it out?
They should donate the mini skyscrapers to the building it represents. :)
or is the gallery perminant?
Cliff December 7th, 2003, 02:24 PM Any one of you remember that model of Singapore in Liang Court?
Behind the glass lifts.
What happened to it?
RafflesCity December 7th, 2003, 03:40 PM That was quite nimble of you to get the screen shot;)
It would have looked great..but maybe the new plans allow for more open green spaces between buildings. Also I wonder with the weight of all those scrapers on the reclaimed land it wouldnt do a Shanghai;)
Cliff December 8th, 2003, 01:59 AM I think it should be okay, look at Marina City.:D
huaiwei December 8th, 2003, 07:14 AM Haha...well, it was indeed sad, but if you look at the winning entry for the recent public spaces design competition, there was one design for this particular area, and it does call for extensive public greenery spaces all over. The URA might actually favour that design over a mess of high rises.
Cliff December 8th, 2003, 10:11 AM While that is very good, I still prefer dark streets and soaring skyscrapers.:D
New Jack City December 9th, 2003, 01:19 AM Those twin towers look interesting, why were they cancelled?

Cliff December 9th, 2003, 08:46 AM Of course I want them!!:D Do you know anything about that model of Singapore in Liang Court?
Yes, they seem to replace height with ergonomics, which is also good...

Cliff December 14th, 2003, 12:48 PM I'm not sure, but yes, the model was excellent, the view from the lifts was from Marina south, without Republic Plaza, of course. It was smaller though, only until Raffles City, Marina Centre was not included.
The shape was a semi circle.

bizbote March 13th, 2004, 05:44 AM Hi! Singaporean friends...
I'm a visitor from Thai forum, nice to visit your forum.
I have been to the Urban Redevelopment Authority - URA gallery last 2 years and seen a lot of development plan...if's i'm not wrong, it's around Marina Bay, right? Have it started, yet?
In that plan, there are some building above 280m limit aren't they?
BTW, are they keep on following the URA plan?
I'm thinking about re-visit the URA again in my next trip to SG, wanna see any updated info.
Do you think it has any updates from last 2 years?
RafflesCity March 13th, 2004, 05:51 AM Hi bizbote, and welcome to Singapore forum!
Yes, the URA Gallery has the models for the development of the new downtown around the Marina. Construction of it is underway, but not all of it at one go. So far, 1 building has been completed with 2 under costruction and 2 more to start later this year.
A huge BFC site is also slated for release with that being completed around 2008-2010 est.
As for building above the 280m height, bad news so far as that is not happening.
I recommend you to visit the URA Gallery again, they have updated models and now offer 3 different exhibits of models. From very small mini Singapore island model to a huge detailed model of the CBD:)
Hope this helps and you can look at pictures of the model here

@heirloom, some of the models in the new downtown go taller than 245m
heirloom November 9th, 2004, 03:05 PM yeah but i thought the maximum height in ndt was 245m? i was wondering if now there will be sites with maximum heights more than that.
RafflesCity November 9th, 2004, 03:07 PM well I looked at the whole model and the tallest block in the NDT would be 280m, located at the back.
if the site fronting the bay was also 280m, it would be ugly with our already existing 3 talls, so they had to stagger the heights, but I would prefer something over 300m

RafflesCity November 9th, 2004, 03:26 PM I went there quite recently to view the Architectural Awards exhibit - basically posters of the restoration works of old beauties. Hopefully developers would want 10 or more 280s to be built in the NDT. After all, such a big piece of land and all you can find are 3 280s in the NDT in the future again? One word...sianz...

hyacinthus November 25th, 2004, 06:24 AM Here's part of the Singapore City model at URA's gallery.
http://img116.exs.cx/img116/1862/URA.jpg
BTW, URA is going to have an exhibition soon at their gallery. It's about the transition of Singapore skylines over the years, I guess. Nothing said about the dates though.
RafflesCity November 25th, 2004, 06:40 AM I called URA up and they said it would open in December. They had originally planned to open it this month.
nicholasliha November 25th, 2004, 07:46 AM hey party people! URA is having a gala opening of the exhibition early early december. It will put shockwaves on the press. cos it will be media covered and ULTRA BIG PEOPLE (i mean ultra ultra big Singaporeans) will be lending voice to the conviction of this era that Singapore will have quality architecture to attract quality ppl. Can't tell you more details because i'm sure that the person who leaked this out to me did so at the risk of his job haha. ooh. but not long now.
nicholasliha November 25th, 2004, 07:54 AM anyway, inside intel reports that URA has no intention of creating another highrise cluster. The idea is to let the skyline taper down from the existing peak at Raffles down along Marina. Which is quite romantic lah, imagine from afar a row white of beacons tapered down on both ends. Only the peak area has aging architecture, but still solid nonetheless. Hence the call on development owners in the CBD to upgrade their facades and clean up their brown spots haha. Oh... but so disappointing yah? why cannot divert air traffic to let more buildings rise. In 500 years, our current CBD will stand memorial to the glory of the long gone 90s, like a white washed tribute of current day Venice. HK will be unrecognisable, except for the preserved spires of the BOC and the Jardine peeking from the ankles of new modern constructions. Which is more tragic and beautiful a memory? Rome the eternal(-ally preserved) or London, the ever morphing landscape. Mebbe Singapore will become totally obsolete after Hsien Loong and we will become a husk of our former selves, until our liberators the UMNO step in to prop up our ailing economy under a bright blue banner proclaiming Malaysia Boleh! Selamat Singapura haha.

the previous exhibition was also covered in the media back in 2002? wonder whats in store this time.
but I can imagine this exhibit will be used to sell Singapore to investors, perhaps for projects like the BFC or new developments in the new downtown, what better way to make a dramatic impression

Three words.....you are mad!

URA exhibition showcases the shaping of Singapore through urban planning
By Joanne Leow, Channel NewsAsia
SINGAPORE : Even though urban planning has been successful in transforming Singapore's landscape in the past 30 years, more challenges lie ahead, says Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.
He said Singapore may be clean, green and efficient, but that is not good enough to make it a truly vibrant, global city.
And to give Singaporeans a glimpse of the future and a look at the past, he launched the Urban Redevelopment Authority exhibition "Shaping Singapore" and reopened the "City Gallery".
How Singapore became what it is today is carefully documented in a first-ever comprehensive exhibition on urban planning and conservation.
Exhibits in the newly-reopened city gallery make it easy to get a bird's eye view of the bustling modern metropolis that Singapore has become after 30 years of urban planning.
But given our tight space constraints, what is on the horizon for Singapore's urban landscape in the next 30 years?
Mr Lee said: "Every government, every city knows that in the era of globalisation, being clean, functional and efficient is not good enough if you aspire to be a global city.
"Moving forward, what should distinguish our city is boldness, experimentation, setting new standards and pushing new frontiers.
"Sometimes this could be at the expense of efficiency and like all bold measures, will involve taking some risks. But it is the only way to catch the attention of the world, and stand a chance of acquiring the x-factor."
Mr Lee said he wanted vibrancy and optimism in the air - something that will bring pride to Singaporeans and excite visitors.
Mr Lee said: "Ultimately what determines a great city is that extra x-factor. You cannot quite explain it, but you know it when you arrive in a city that has it. It is the quality that brings pride to the people living there and at the same time excites visitors.
"The outlook is globalised and cosmopolitan. You immediately feel the vibrancy and excitement, the opportunity and optimism. You want to work and play all day and night, because there is too much to see and do and the city never sleeps."
So the government's prepared to review and relax building rules, give bigger plots of land to private developers to tap on their creativity, and invest in bolder, ambitious concepts.
The Shaping Singapore exhibition showcases some of these plans, like the expansion of the Central Business District at Marina Bay.
The URA is also injecting $3 million to start a programme promoting architecture and urban design excellence with the private sector.
It will set up a Architecture and Urban Design Promotion Programme to foster the development of design professionals and to generate public interest and awareness in architecture and urban design issues.
All this to give Singapore that much needed x-factor.
Mr Lee said: "Shaping Singapore is a long process. We will develop our city progressively and gradually.
"It is like a garden which takes many years of patient planting, shaping and settling before it matures and displays its full richness and diversity.
"If we guide our city to grow organically, it will bear the charm and cultural imprints of many generations of Singaporeans."
The exhibition will run for four months at the URA building. - CNA

HK and Shanghai's urban model centres are dedicated exhibition estates. But i guess it makes it more impressive that URA has her model centre in her HQ. Shanghai's one is a grand signature outlet overlooking the City People's Park, the scale the largest of the three. HK's one is on the waterfront! SG one in a conservation district. I'll rank them
1. SH 2. SG 3. HK

nicholasliha May 5th, 2005, 10:17 AM oh you can't miss it. on the highway to the city from the airport you'll definitely pass by the people's park where such sculptural edifices like SUPEC and Shanghai Museum anchor this big green public space. SUPEC is the big white 5 storey tall building capped by these 4 inverted conethings. i think its french designed.
People's Park is quite unmissable. Its on one end of Nanjing Road. And is surrounded by all these commercial towers rising some 200m. Shanghai is just BIG BIG GRANDILOQUENT and utterly imposing. and very clean and respectable to tourists.

Culiat October 27th, 2005, 01:58 AM :eek2: WOW! :eek2: I love those details!
Cliff October 27th, 2005, 04:16 PM OUB Centre is a simple yet beautiful building, full of significance and meaning in its design. This elegant skyscraper has a timeless quality and, although old, still shines. The facade detail speaks alot about the use of the tower, where the aluminum sheets spaces from each other suggests a growth from within. The ever changing appearance of the building, in profile and colour, enhanced by the space between the two monumental prisms, further suggests this. The interior, with the filtered light and cascading waterfalls is reminiscent of the rainforests of Singapore. The large cutout at the base allows visual connection to the modern towers and old shophouses of Raffles Place. The building's sheer sides, is made more comprehendable by the breaking down of the windows into smaller units, and thus the pedestrian can relate to the tower, despite its form. The base of the building, with a shorter podium, actually connects the tower with the urban fabric, and instead of pulling the offices into the sky, ignoring the surroundings, it acknowledges the site and the people that use it.
-just a few of the reasons.:)

Singapore architects' exhibition returns after successful show in Berlin
By DESIGN REPORTER, Tay Suan Chiang
MENTION Singapore to the average European and images of swaying palm trees and beaches come to mind.
'Europeans have this exotic image of Singapore,' says Dr Erwin Viray, an assistant professor of architecture at the National University of Singapore. But when they visited the Exotic More Or Less Exhibition that he curated at the Aedes Gallery in Berlin, the Germans and other European visitors were 'amazed to see that Singapore has sophisticated architecture'.
The exhibition, held from March to May, featured works from two local architectural firms - Woha Architects and W Architects.
The Aedes Gallery is Europe's first private architectural gallery. It conducts about 20 exhibitions each year, and each exhibition is by invitation only.
After its successful run in Berlin (right) which saw about 7,000 visitors, the exhibition has returned and is on at the Urban Redevelopment Authority from today until Oct 27.
It was opened last night by Dr Mohamad Maliki Bin Osman, Parliamentary Secretary for the Ministry of National Development.
Dr Viray says the exhibition shows how architecture comes alive and how things are done in Singapore.
Woha Architects, led by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, showcased their projects such as the Singapore Arts School, Moulmein Rise condominium and the Duxton Plain public housing project.
'The projects showed the architects' skill in creating high-density, high-rise buildings which they have strengths in and are now importing to neighbouring cities, such as Bangkok,' says Dr Viray.
W Architects's Mok Wei Wei showcased his works such as the Da Paolo E Judie restaurant, The Loft at Nassim Hill and Three Three Robin condominium.
This is the first time that local architectural firms have exhibited at the Aedes Gallery.
'Being exhibited there gives us credibility, and confirms our work is interesting at an international level,' says Mr Hassell.
Mr Mok, who did not know of the Aedes Gallery before this exhibition, says: 'Even other architects go 'wow' when they hear I've exhibited at the gallery.'
Exotic More Or Less Singapore Exhibition is on at the URA Atrium, 45 Maxwell Road, from now till Oct 27. Admission is free.

RafflesCity April 17th, 2007, 02:49 PM well, so far no news yet. On site are currently some old buildings that will have to make way for these. Check out the Masterplan 2008 for the revised parcellation.
The latest news of developments in that area are 2 hotel plots that have been released - one is now on tender.
Pengui April 17th, 2007, 03:24 PM That building is just a blocking model I think, no serious proposal backing it.

Excelsvr August 27th, 2007, 01:59 PM Hi, does anyone have a pic of Citylights in the model :

excelsvr
RafflesCity August 27th, 2007, 03:16 PM So far I've not seen Citylights in the model, nor Kerrisdale.
However, I did suggest to URA Gallery to update the 'incorrect' model of Tribeca which they did shortly after. May have been a coincidence.
I think they need to quickly update the model of Orchard Turn & Scotts Square.
