Theres no "even" Coimbatore. The city is one of the best educational centers in India.

Funnily enough . Coimbatore is ranked No 14 in Education in this report. Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru lead the education rankings.

With regards to point 1, what does the presence of students from other states have to do with the "index" of achievement of Calicut in terms of the education sector?

Agree with this. If anything the "presence of students from other states" is a plus for ability to attract outside talent.

There were many such buildings in calicut, many of them came down to make way for the new ones, a few ones remains, which includes, CSI office near mananchira, Old corporation office, Asoka Hospital, Govt-Beach Hospital. Govt-training College, Com-trust Office....etc, of these, fate of Asoka hospital is already decided, it will come down when NH-212 gets 4 laned.....:ohno:

Four(Or Six)laning of the city roads cannot be avoided. So a bit of our past will vanish alongwith.. But as citizens we should do one thing. We must insist the authorities to approve only those buildings which uses traditional architectural styles and symbols for new buildings also. (The new concrete monsters, shapeless as they are, should not be allowed to invade our city.) There are people, even among architects, who still believe that new buildings can be built in any other way. This is a foolish myth. It is possible to build high-rise buildings using traditional and aesthetically pleasing styles.

Don't ask for everything... Old and new building have equal value.. So you need to widen your roads or keep your buildings ?

This is all because of poor town planning... I Still believe All kerala cities and town needs a Detailed planning and vision.... You need to spend money in creating this...

We don't have any vision... thats why we are hearing abt new airports in some news then will change to Express highways in other news and followed by NH widening limiting to 30m in other news....

Obviously, concrete tiles aren't the sole culprits, as much as the increase in concrete buildings and structures that have a large negative impact on climate. We need alternative construction technologies that can brave harsh weather conditions, as well embed the "green" elements which may be aligned with nature.

Of course, the point is who is bothered about such research, when money is close at hand, if traditional materials are used for construction!

Agreed, But Sanju, size matters. If u start an L.P School at Karaparamba or Vengeri you will call it LP School Karaparamba/Vengeri But if u start a College in the same place you will call it _College Calicut. (We have only Christain college in the city though). I don't think a KINFRA park at that size( it is aimed for small scale industries development and issued to Malappuram for its backwardness) need a same status as an airport or university.

BTW 'Malabar' services where launched some time back right? This is the first time these services are launched exclusively as a 'city' route in Calicut.

'Malabar' is equivalent to the 'Venad' services in South Kerala, which are for local/within the district services and more or less a replacement for the old 'Red with yellow line' local buses.

The first in the series was 'Ananthpuri Fast' and 'Ananthapuri Air' city services in Trivandrum City.

The colour scheme of Ananthapuri and Venad/Malabar services have slight difference, Ananthapuri has a blue livery, whereas for Venad/Malabar it is slight violet. Another thing is that Malabar/Venad buses have a 2+3 seating with layout and with a roof carrier and ladder where as Ananthapuri has 2+2 layout with no roof carrier/ladder.

Sudeeshbhai, there are Venad buses between Calicut & Thrissur too, with the same colour scheme, as u mentioned, they are cheaper than the normal super fast/express buses. Malabar buses were launched some two years back, think it goes to eastern parts of the district & Wayanad.

Kerala Plans Heritage Village for Diaspora

Thiruvananthapuram, July 13 – Kerala Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan Tuesday said the state industrial development corporation is undertaking a feasibility study for the proposed Rs.750-crore heritage village for the diaspora.

‘We have already identified 337 acres in the outskirts of the capital city near Chiryankil. The district collector has been asked to find out the modus operandi of acquiring the land,’ said Achuthanandan, who heads the department of non-resident Keralites affairs (NORKA).

In reply to a question by Communist Party of India-Marxist Member M.M. Monayi in the assembly, he said the proposed heritage village would include an international school, an old age home and residential villas.
‘We have asked the NORKA to see that in their future meetings, this project should be showcased to the diaspora. The government and non-resident Keralites are putting in funds for the project. We will even approach the centre for investments,’ said Achuthanandan.

There are more than two million Keralites settled across the globe, with 90 per cent of them living and working in the Middle-East.
Housing Minister Binoy Viswam in reply to another question by Communist Party of India legislator N. Anirudhan said the State Housing Board had come out with schemes for the diaspora.

‘At Kozhikode plans are now ready to build flats for the diaspora,’ said Viswam.

Manifold growth awaits Kozhikode (http://www.thehindu.com/todays-paper/tp-national/tp-kerala/article514819.ece)

With the climate becoming quite conducive, builders having operations here are going ahead with major expansion plans. Industry insiders are of the opinion that there will be substantial demand for both commercial and residential projects.

Currently, the city of Kozhikode is in the throes of a change. And reportedly, it's likely to be a change that will have manifold manifestations affecting people living in this part of Kerala and that too in every tier of the society. With successive announcements of several industrial projects, especially in the field of IT, the mood has turned upbeat. Kozhikode is a city which has been neglected for long and it has been waiting for years for changes to happen. And finally when it's happening, it's happening with a bang.

The major thrust of growth has come with the streamlining of two IT parks in recent months. With options and opportunities breaking new grounds, Kozhikode will soon turn out to as one of the most sought after IT destinations in South India. Both the Cyber Parks on completion would directly provide job opportunities to few thousands of professionals. “The number of professionals migrating to other states for better job placement is constantly on the rise. In IT sectors of Bangalore and Hyderabad the presence of Malayalis are quite high. And many of them are willing to come back if there are enough opportunities. It's under such circumstances that two Cyber Parks are coming up at Kozhikode”, says P.Zakeer of Calicut IT Initiative, a social organisation that has come up to tap the emerging opportunities and liaison with IT ventures centering Kozhikode.

And, housing will be an area which will have good growth prospects as the future requirements will be huge. Finding a buoyant market, more and more players are entering realty segment in Kozhikode. Many other projects such as multi-specialty hospitals, five star hotels and academic institutions are also on the cards which are enhancing the face value of Kozhikode to greater heights. “If current trends are any indication, Kozhikode will turn out to be a major IT destination in a matter of a decade. And it will have to accommodate people with enhanced income levels which will have direct impact in the economic growth of the city”, remarks Binu.S.Pazhoor, CEO of the Government-owned Cyber Park. Moreover, it will also generate huge demand for quality housing, educational centres, hang out points, eateries and malls, adds he. With the climate becoming quite conducive, builders having operations here are going ahead with major expansion plans. Industry insiders are of the opinion that there will be substantial demand for both commercial and residential projects. Besides, a lot of planning is also taking place in the sphere of infrastructural development too. In fact, the city is making an all out effort to develop and strengthen its credentials on par with other upcoming metros in the country with an aim carving a niche for itself.

With the industrial and business climate having changed, professionals in hordes will touch down in Kozhikode in near future. With low operational costs, easy availability of skilled personnel, friendly citizenry and administration with a positive attitude, there couldn't be a better place than Kozhikode for both entrepreneurs and professionals. The presence of a number of exotic weekend getaways like Wayanad and Bakel will be counted as added attractions that Kozhikode offer to professionals who are aspiring to reach the place. However, aspects like more connectivity to rest of the country, refined living standards and better roads are the other important elements that will have to be taken care of on a war footing.

Hope Thrissur one day will have a similar face lift of Cochin and recently Kozhikode....

Calicut IT initiative does not have much to offer to the growth of IT in calicut. Yet, one cannot deny the fact that calicut is going through a phase of rapid growth. I think if CALICUT IT INITIATIVE can focus their attention upon infra-structure development, rather than clamouring about IT (of which they know nothing), the IT sector will be indirectly benefitted. If they can persuade the Govt. to build wide roads, the rest will follow. In that sense the organization too has a role to play in the growth of IT in Calicut.

Warship designing centre proposed at Chaliyam

Kozhikode: The Union Ministry of Defence is considering a highly ambitious proposal to set up a warship designing centre at Chaliyam, near Beypore, in the district.

Around 50 acres of waterfront land, which the State government had taken over from a defunct petroleum company a few years ago, has already been identified by the district administration for defence acquisition. The multi-crore project is a fructification of talks held between Industries Minister Elamaram Karim and Defence Minister A.K. Antony last year.

A senior government functionary told The Hindu here on Saturday that officials of the Mumbai-based Mazagon Dock Limited, a government of India undertaking engaged in manufacturing of warships and submarines for the Indian Navy and patrol boats, had evinced interest in the project. Besides, Goa Shipyard Limited, under the administrative control of the Defence Ministry, and also known for building ships and patrol vessels had expressed willingness for the project.

Another public sector company, Cochin Shipyard Limited, currently entrusted with the construction of the indigenous aircraft carrier project for the Indian Navy, had also given a positive signal for such a designing centre proposed at Chaliyam. The project was still in its infancy and modalities would have to be worked out later, he said.

Earlier, multiple agencies attached to both the State government and more especially the departments of the Centre had conveyed to the district administration for establishing new projects at the proposed site. Even the Union Ministry of Human Resources Development had desired to set up a Kendriya Vidyalaya. But in the forefront was the Indian Coast Guard for setting up a state-of-the-art training academy for its personnel.

In fact, the Beypore Station commanding officer G.K.P. Sreekumar had sent a detailed report after carrying out a survey of the land for the project in April. Top officials, including Director-General of Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anil Chopra, had visited the waterfront site. Now that project would have to be shelved. Anyway the land would be allotted exclusively for the use of the Defence Ministry, sources said.

A spokesman said the training academy for Coast Guard personnel would now be considered either in Gujarat or Goa where abundant and suitable land was available.

Thats Mareena Motors right, man the service is utterly poor!!

Last week we gave our one year old Tata Indica DLG for service, and we delivered it on time, but the matter is not that, we all got shocked when we realized that all our four tyres were replaced with old bulgy ones!! we complained the company and they were not in a mood to listen, our car has been driven very less kilo meters and its just 1 year old how can our tyres be bulgy!! so we have given a case in consumer court, we have the tyre numbers with us!!

Another incident, my cousin gave his Tata Sumo Grande for service, when he gave it, it was full tank and he have also noted the KM reading, but when he delivered the car, he was shocked to see that the car has been driven a 50 Km extra from the noted value and worst part of it, they have robbed the fuel.:bash:

Many have experienced the same!!

Sanju..seems you have written this in a hurry..

I also assume your car is Indica and not India:)

BTW I was also not satisfied with the service of Tata dealers in Kerala. I had sought the help of our forumer 'Shafi' when he was with Customer Service of Tata in Kerala.

In Bangalore, Manipal Motors was good, now the service of the new dealer KHT motors is also good.

BTW first thing you have to do is to drop a mail to TATA Motors customer care. I hope the dealer will come running at your doorsteps. It happened with me when I was not satisfied with the 'cleaning' quality of my car after a service. (That was before I got acquainted with Shafi)

KOZHIKODE: The State government has decided to set up a rural apparel park at Thiruvambadi to tap the huge potential offered by the textile industry. The foundation stone of the project, being developed by the Kerala Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (Kinfra), will be laid on August 3.

The project is the first of five rural apparel parks envisaged by the government to give a boost to the textile sector. The total investment will be Rs.25 crore. Minister for Finance T.M. Thomas Isaac had mentioned the setting up of rural apparel parks in the State in his budget speech 2010-2011.

The multi-crore venture is expected to provide employment and further the economic and social advancement of people in the rural areas, said spokesman of Kinfra K.N. Srikumar.

The land for these parks, at least three acres each, will be provided free by local bodies. The government will also provide subsidy towards the training expenses of labourers required for these parks.

Aimed at promoting investment, the project is expected to generate employment and develop infrastructural facilities in the grama panchayat for establishing small and medium type garment industries. This would help in training unemployed persons to enter into gainful employment and thus bring about an overall social transformation in the grama panchayat, he said.

The latest design and facilities would be incorporated in the proposed park, enabling private entrepreneurs to set up readymade garment making units. About 300 women would be provided jobs at these units, he said.

The land will have proper road access. Arrangements will be made for power supply lines and availability of water source. However, the land would have to be identified by the respective local body for leasing and transferring to Kinfra.

Mr. Srikumar said the factory area would be divided into production, cutting, finishing, stores, computer-aided design and washing zones. A total area of 60,000 sq. ft. will be constructed.

A cutting area of 4,000 sq. ft. to 5,000 sq. ft. is proposed for handling about 350-400 machines. A finishing area of 6,000 sq. ft. to 7,000 sq. ft. is proposed for 30 ironing tables, corresponding inspection, quality control as well as packing and dispatch. There will be a store in the range between 6,000 sq. ft. and 7,000 sq. ft. The remaining area would be made available for production facilities.

An area of approximately 2,000 sq. ft. is proposed for the office. In addition to this, a CAD room, testing laboratory, canteen, first-aid room, crèche and restroom will be provided. The estimated requirement of water for washing and other use is expected to be about 0.50 million litres daily. This would be obtained from the nearest water supply lines or through bore wells and rainwater harvesting, he said.

Kozhikode: The city police will set up a 24-hour call centre attached to the control room to answer queries from citizens.

The initiative, the first of its kind in the State, will function on an experimental basis from August 15. The crime stopper and women police cells will be integrated into the call centre.

Twelve dedicated lines will handle calls from the public. The toll-free number will be announced later, said P. Vijayan, Commissioner of Police, Kozhikode city, at an interactive session with the media at the Calicut Press Club on Tuesday.

He said the call centre would provide information whether a police officer was available at the office or deputed for other duties. It would give details of the documents a person should attach with the application form for passport verification. It would provide tips on security for those going on vacation as well as information on cases being investigated.

The software for the system would be installed in a couple of days and officials were being trained to handle the centre, he said.

The Commissioner said the newly constituted City Shadows team would start functioning soon. Around 85-odd police personnel had been trained for the purpose of shadow policing. These policemen in plainclothes would gather intelligence and inform the special branch and the local police of the activities in the city. The system had achieved success in curbing crime in Kochi.

“Plans are afoot to utilise the services of retired police personnel in detecting crime and improving the surveillance network,” he said.

Mr. Vijayan said highway ‘jagratha samitis' would be constituted at accident-prone areas in the city to provide first aid to victims of accidents. The members of the samitis would be given training in providing first aid. First aid kits would be installed at accident-prone areas, for which the government would allocate funds.

He said the police planned to constitute a body of recognised manpower recruiting agencies to tackle the increasing number of visa cheating cases.

The police were working out a formula to improve security of commercial establishments and banks. The plan was to bring the 2,000-odd private security personnel in the city under the control of the police, Mr. Vijayan said.

Regarding the rise in the number of juvenile cases, the Commissioner said parents had the responsibility in checking the activities of children.

Nearly 56 children were arrested for theft and chain-snatching cases in the police station limits of Medical College, Nallalam and Marad in the past two months, he said.

Guys,
I was following this forum for quite some time now - Really appreciate the enthu behind the people who really contribute to this regularly.
In one of the threads I saw posts & queries regarding Calicut University and Calicut Airport being in Malappuram Dist. I would like to highlight here that Malappuram as a district was formed only in 1969, whereas the University of Calicut was formed in 1968. Likewise, the airport was sanctioned in 1977 but I am pretty sure that Malappuram will be no way in picture at that point of time to be named or qualify as a "Malappuram Airport"..!
Similar is the case of other projects which came late - probably the idea would have been some kind of upliftment to the erstwhile backward district in Kerala (Not any more) would have been the motivation behind sanctioning such projects in Malappuram district.
Apologies if this was posted here previously, but worth remembering.

Cheers!

Kozhikode: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Thursday launched its WiMAX service here.

Speaking to presspersons, General Manager C. Sunitha said the Kozhikode circle was the fourth in the State to offer WiMAX service.

WiMAX (Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access) is a novel technology through which customers can avail themselves of broadband connectivity without a landline connection. The speciality of the service is that it ensures a minimum of 512 Kbps speed while uploading and downloading data and the speed can go up to 2Mbps.

WiMAX is mainly aimed at people who do not have a landline connection. The portable Customer Premise Equipment (CPE) can be used by connecting to a computer. The customer can use the connection anywhere he pleases, whether it is home or office provided he is not on the move.

There are three types of customer modems offered. The USB type CPE (Dongle), CPE with internal antenna and CPE with external antenna. Based on the distance from the BTS centres and line sight condition with the base station, the typical range of WiMAX service varies. The USB CPE has a range of 500 metres, CPE with internal antenna up to 1 km, and the CPE with external antenna up to 2 km (more with actual tower sighting).

At present, there are 40 BTS centres under the circle, including Kozhikode and Wayanad districts, where WiMAX service is available. The centres are Ashokapuram, Mananchira, Palayam, West Hill, South Beach, Nadakkav, Chevayur, Nellikkode, Malaparamba, Mankav, Panniyankara, Vengalam, Pookkad, Nallalam, Beypore, Ramanattukara, Feroke, Pantheerankavu, Elathur, Kakkodi, REC, Thamarassery, Kadalundy, Kunnamangalam, Koilandy, Moodady, Vadakara, Chombala, Koduvally, Balussery, Nadapuram, Medical College, Palazhipala, Payyoli West (Mepayur), Melady (Payyoli), Kalpetta, Lakkidi, Meenangadi, Mananthavadi and Sulthan Battery.

As many as 16 new BTS centres will be introduced in the second phase of the Rs.6-crore project. As of now, Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam and Kannur circles in the State have WiMAX.

Deputy General Manager (P&A) A.K. Padmanabhan, Deputy General Manager (Finance) V. Venugopalan, Area Manager E. Gopinathan and Divisional Engineer K.K. Usha were also present.
