INKID, a joint venture between Infrastructures Kerala Limited (INKeL) and the Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), has floated proposals to set up an infrastructure project on 180 acres, 25 km from the Kozhikode airport.

The proposal is to set up a medical college, a 1000-bed super speciality hospital, and medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy colleges. A wellness centre comprising facilities for Ayurveda, Unani and Siddha is also envisaged.

Engineering and architecture colleges and associated infrastructure will be a component of the project. Management institutions as well as hotel management schools are also proposed to be set up.

INKID intends to develop industrial, logistics, education and health hubs. Official sources told The Hindu that a study by Ernst & Young had highlighted the scope for an ‘education and health care city.' The study had noted that education accounted for more than one-third of the total revenue expenditure of the State.

The per capita expenditure on education is the second largest among States in the country. Students form about one-fifth of the population. Education isone of the major sectors offering employment. The project will be executed in partnership with experienced groups which are to be selected through a transparent process, sources said.

Reason for choice

The Kozhikode region was selected due to the high concentration of non-resident Keralites, high foreign remittances and the lack of premium education and medical facilities there.

The study had noted that many students were migrating to neighbouring States for higher education. The trend can be reversed if adequate facilities are provided in the area, it said.

Outlet at Puthiyara near district sub-jail

Offers round-the-clock service

Kozhikode: Ensuring round-the-clock availability of milk and milk products to dealers and customers, the first Milma Shoppe of the Malabar Region Cooperative Milk Producers' Union (Milma) in Kozhikode will be opened in the city on Monday.

Talking to reporters here on Sunday, chairman of the Milma Malabar region P.P. Gopinatha Pillai said the outlet would sell a range of products including ice-cream, ‘peda', Milma-Plus, curd, ‘sambharam', chocolates, mango juice, ‘palada' mix and Dairy fresh cakes, produced and marketed by Milma.

Advance orders

“Dealers as well as individual customers can rely on the outlet for milk-related requirements,” said Mr. Pillai, adding that it would take advance orders for weddings and receptions.

He said arrangements had been made for spot delivery of milk at hotels and cool bars in case of emergency. Emergency orders will be received at 9495897967.

Milma Malabar region managing director K.T. Thomas said products from Milma units outside the district, including Thiruvananthapuram, would be marketed through the facility in Kozhikode.

“It is a major step taken by Milma in the marketing front,” said Mr. Thomas.

Mayor A.K. Premajam will inaugurate the outlet at Puthiyara near the district sub-jail at 2.30 p.m.

Beypore to get a township along with the port
http://i56.************/seva6c.jpg
source: Mathrubhumi (http://www.mathrubhumi.com/kozhikode/news/685414-local_news-kozhikode.html)
Almost same news here too
The development plan for Beypore Port in Kerala is likely to undergo further changes with the Indian Coast Guard seeking to have a berth of its own at the port.

The original proposal is to develop the port, which is the second biggest port in the State after Kochi, incorporating more cargo and passenger facilities at a total outlay of INR 760 crore.

This is envisaged to be achieved by increasing the depth of the basin from the existing four metres to 12 meters in stages, enabling vessels up to 20,000 dwt to call on the port. Also, a 400 metre wharf is to be constructed in addition to the existing two wharves.

Recently, the Ports Department had signed a memorandum of understanding with Lakshadweep Development Council to let the latter construct a 200 meter berth exclusively for the passengers to and from the island at a cost of INR 20 crore. This has necessitated suitable changes in the original master plan.

According to official sources, the latest proposal put up by the Coast Guard is to have a 200-metre berth for itself, which will warrant further changes in the master plan. For one, the department's original plan and estimates will be scaled down to accommodate the two proposals.

The sources said that in the event, there would be a delay in floating the global tender for identifying a private partner for developing the port. Meanwhile, a proposal has come up for developing a township within a radius of 15 to 20 km of the port. The Infrastructures Kerala Ltd a State Government agency, has been entrusted to find a consultant for preparing the master plan for the project.

The production of yarn would rise from 2,100 kg to 4,500 kg a day.

Job opportunities

Mr. Nandakumar said 271 people would get direct employment at the unit and indirect job openings for nearly 200 more created. The hi-tech machines installed at the mill include imported spinning frames, Marzoli comber and Auto Corner machines. The mill would be able to make strides in the export of products.

It was on December 17, 2006, that the locked-out unit was reopened by Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan. Mr. Nandakumar said three-more spinning mills would be set up in the State in two months.

New Project to ease transport in the heart of the city. New ramp road will be built in the Old over-bridge towards Oyitty road.http://i52.************/rr7aip.jpg

Actually I don't think it is a smart project, it will ease transport in one direction BUT will make difficulties in other, the better option was a road under the bridge parallel to Railway line connecting Railway station road & oyitti road.

Yeah, the new council need to visit the Palayam underpass @ Trivandrum.
It looks like a oneway underpass well conceived. The Oyitty Road would remain a ONE Way , therefore an underpass will suffice.

Intriguing why no cosultants are appointed for this messy problem by the Calicut Corporation.

The foundation stone of the National Institute for Research and Development in Defence Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) will be laid on tomorrow.

Kozhikode: The establishment of the National Institute for Research and Development in Defence Shipbuilding (NIRDESH) at Chaliyam will pave the way for the growth of ancillary industrial units in the State, besides strengthening the indigenous defence production capabilities of the country, said Gyanesh Kumar, Director-General of the institute.

The foundation stone of the institute will be laid on January 4.

Mr. Gyanesh Kumar, who is also the Joint Secretary (Naval Systems) in the Ministry of Defence, said at a press meet here on Sunday that NIRDESH would be involved in the development of nearly 15,000 different components, needed for the completion of warships. Of the total components, 25 per cent will be of key and strategic products, he said.

According to Mr. Gyanesh Kumar, over 10,000 persons, comprising researchers and developers from various parts of the country will be involved with NIRDESH.

With the existing threat scenario and emerging geo strategic requirements, NIRDESH would be able to offer better support to the Indian Navy, Coast Guard and other maritime agencies, he added.

Alkesh Sharma, Managing Director of Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC), said the national institute would offer numerous direct and indirect job opportunities to youngsters pursuing courses in naval architecture and shipbuilding.

Mr. Sharma said the Malabar region would secure a prestigious space with the realisation of the biggest research institute in defence shipbuilding at Chaliyam.

Kozhikode: The demand for a naval museum near the ancestral home of naval warrior Kunhali Marakkar in Kottakal, in Kozhikode district, will be looked into, Defence Minister A.K. Antony has said.

He was speaking at the Vadakara Town Hall on Tuesday after laying the foundation stone for a regional centre of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU).

Union Minister of State for Home Mullappally Ramachandran, who presided over the function, said a museum would be a fitting tribute to Kunhali Marakkar whose home is already a tourist destination. Mr. Antony said more projects of the Defence Ministry may be considered in the State if sufficient land was made available.

“There should be joint efforts by the State and Central governments for development. Politics should be kept out,” he said.

IIM-Kozhikode top B-school in the South
The first-ever survey on B-schools in South India is out and IIM-Kozhikode tops it. The edex-Centre for Management Education and Rese*arch (GHRDC) survey decided to go regional and ranked the top 50 management institutes in the South and the top 10 in Odisha.
The survey has reinforced the fact that IIM is the citadel of management education in the South, if not all-India, but it faces some tough competition from other government-run B-schools like Bharathidasan Institute of Management, Tiruchy (ranked # 2), and Institute for Financial Management and Research, Chennai (ranked # 5). BIM, in fact, has fared better than Loyola Institute of Business Administration, Chennai, one of the most sought-after institutes for management aspirants.
Xavier Institute of Management and Business, Bhubaneswar, leads the pack in Odisha.
Around 200 B-schools were short-listed and invited to participate in the survey out of which 74 (62 in south India and 12 in Odisha) responded. The B-schools were rated on parameters like infrastructure, pedagogy quality, qualifications of teachers, research facilities, industry interface, publications, admission process, course curriculum, placement record, involvement in social projects, collaboration with the national and foreign universities etc.

HiLITE Builders, one of the leading construction groups based here, has unveiled a new brand identity to reflect its multi-dimensional expansions plans within the country and overseas.

Mega project

The new brand identity, with the slogan ‘The finer side of life,' has been designed to coincide with the launch of a mega project here, HiLITE Marina, consisting of 410 apartments.

The group at present handles five million square feet of built-up area.

Mr P. Sulaiman, Managing Director, said here on Saturday that last year marked the expansion of the group into the West Asia market, and the coming years would witness its further growth beyond the national boundaries.

Other areas

He said the group was spreading its reach to other areas like hospitality and infrastructure, among other things.

In Kochi, it is now engaged in the execution of a project, HiLITE Platino.

Among other projects in Kozhikode, HiLITE Plaza features a five-level car-parking facility. Another ongoing project, HiLITE Residency, has 400 apartments spread over three 20-storey buildings at a total built-up area of two million square feet.

The group also plans to launch a mall in Kozhikode that would house a multiplex and a hotel, Mr Sulaiman said.

Malabar region to get one more minor port
BL reported that the Kerala Ports Department has initiated the process for the development of yet another minor port in the Malabar region on public private partnership basis.

The department has invited online bids for the development of Beypore port, which comes close on the heels of tenders floated for Ponnani and Azhikkal ports in the region.

The development work includes construction of two wharves of 200 metres each witha total a project cost of INR 163.5 crore. Currently, the port handles only barges and small vessels as the available water depth is only around four metres.

The project envisages deepening the draft to 12 metres in stages to enable the port handle vessels up to 20,000 DWT.

The port now has two wharves of 200 metres each and handles cargo as also passenger traffic to and from Lakshadweep islands.

The import cargo includes mainly chemicals, edible oils, metals and foodgrains from Gujarat, Punjab, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, among other places. Besides, the port also handles petroleum products and LPG from Kochi Refineries to Lakshadweep islands.

The total quantity of cargo being handled by the port now is around 150,000 tonnes annually.

The detailed feasibility report for the project was prepared by Consulting Engineering Services (India) Ltd.

Its going to MICE Tourism for Kerala, in another 2 to 3 years, with number of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events increasing multi-fold. Thanks to rising number of Convention and Exhbition centers.

Congrats, Kozhikode is also entering into Conventions Map of World, with a state of the art Mega International Convention Center announced by gulf based NRI Investments Forum, during Pravasi Bharathiya Divas in Delhi.

The Mega Convention center will have a landmark designed, inspired on model of Sydney Opera House, will come near Calicut International Airport. The convention center will have mega plenary hall, 5 large halls, 2 exhibition centers, a mini-museum on Kerala cultural ethos and artforms, a performing arts center, a five star hotel and large open lawns.

In addition, a shopping mall as well as amusement park are plans as its second phase. The entire project is estimated at 300 crore Rs, with state owned KSIDC holding 11% stake.

I am sure, within a couple of years, Kerala will have the largest number of convention centers, which is going to our next tourism product.

Best of luck- Kozhikode:banana::banana::banana:

I agree! Neither is it a "minor" port, nor is Malabar going to "get" one! Beypore was a port that existed for centuries. Don't believe the papers and news reports completely.

If my understanding is right, the term minor doesn't mean small in case of Beypore or any port for that matter. What I understand is that, the definition of Major Port is extended only to those ports listed by Central Govt as per Indian Port Act. Rest all ports, how large it is, is defined as Minor.

Just for example Mundra port in Gujarat is officially a minor port, but its is currently the most busiest and largest port in the country and does business atleast 100 times more than an official major port like Cochin or Chennai.

So don't get carried away from minor, major or intermediate tags attached with port. If a good private company is handling Beypore, I am sure, its going to regain its past glory. I have no hope, if state govt is going to do business as it failed to inherit the great business qualities of Malabar Zamorins or Marakkars or Ali Rajas.

I agree with you, because, if anything, the tag for Beypore has to be "intermediate", and not minor, which is one of the points I wanted to convey in my post. The second aspect is that, media just uses descriptions as per their whims and fancies.

The analogy with Mundra is a good one. However, keeping political interests in mind, I am skeptical about Beypore being awarded to any major private party, who can raise the port to its full potential. We have many stories pointing in that direction, like the Calicut Intl Airport's predicament, the Malaysian township project, etc.

All those much hyped port development projects like Azhikkal, Beypore, Ponnani, Kollam etc are just small projects for dredging and adding 1 or 2 small wharves. It is understandable since we don't have much industries here to develop them as "major" ports. :ohno:

Both are equally true. Large investors require confidence in state. Our state, unlike Bihar or Jharkhand, donot have any case of law&order problem. It has all good social indices equal to western countries. But the only problem we have is, lack of good leadership, which a backward state like Bihar now has. Unless we have a Nithesh kumar or Narendra Modi or YSR kind of leadership in Kerala, we cannot convince industrialists to come down and invest.

One good leader is enough to control all nusances that goes against industrial development and control red-tape. All other factors are promising.

But ports and airports are equally important, because me may get a good leader at any time, but can't build a seaport or airport overnight, to bring in investments. So working to make good sea-ports as well as airports are good, so that when time ripes, all starts paying dividends.

Yes, though I donot support his religious outlook, his vision and development agenda is really worth to admire. There is no need to seclude him as an out-caste, because his govt supported a worst religious crime. He has ensured, his state and people gets best income and largest development plans.

When our CM is standing before central govt begging for one metro, one rice subsidy, one 500 crore grant, one port, one railway line; this guy proved himself as a role-model, how to do things without getting any central support and even went on refusing central govt's offer of Metro and few other deals. Woww, reallly great. Kerala requires such visionaries, not beggers....

Our govt doesnt do anything worthwhile because they do not in any way care about the development of the state. Their only concern is their own pocket, and hence the highest levels of corruption. All projects that have come up in Kerala, have a corruption tale behind them. The ones that didn't, weren't ready to get involved to such levels. Thats the simple fact.

Modi obviously kept the people and state in mind, when he went about with his development agenda. Issues surrounding the religious tensions are best left alone, as no one really knows what exactly happened, apart from the news put out by a haywire media dying for some issue to feast on. He has proved time and again, his visions. We all need such visionaries.

Just happened to saw this report in Manorama. Posting the translated version here

* Vallarpadam International Container Transshipment Terminal-Kochi is scheduled to open in 2nd week of Feb 2011, by PM Manmohan Singh. Road and rail connectivity issues will be sorted out within this week and completed by end of this month.

* Central Shipping Ministry announces 10 year shipping agenda for the country

* Special priority status will given to to Kochi, Mumbai, Chennai and Vishakapattanam ports, to raise to International level

* Centre to develop Kochi port to international levels within next 10 years, with an investment of 7000 crores

* Centre wants build two Major Ports (Ports under Central Govt) within 10 years. If State Govt gives a request to consider any state port for upgrading to Major port, Centre may consider

* Centre considers Kollam-Kottapuram National Waterway-3 to be extended to Vizhnjam port, if existing problems can be sorted out

* Centre wants to take Shipping infrastructure in India to go next level. It will invest 5 lakh crore in this sector, out of which a lion's share will go to Kochi and Kerala, under appropriate plans

All informations was made by Union Shipping Minister- Vasan while address reporters.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Great news for Kerala. I wish, Kerala Govt must immedidate act by requesting either Vizhinjam port or Beypore port to consider for National Major Port, which will make Kerala, the biggest maritime state in India and global logistics power-house.

Let more good news continue to pour in for Kerala. Good going Kerala:banana::banana:

Don't need to blame the politicians. Blame ourselves who vote for them even though we know they are corrupt. First, we need to change our own mind set. I feel pity for the people who calls zindabads for the corrupt politicians and celebrates harthals. In fact, they don't even know they are unemployed because of these politicians. These situations have to change. We need a good leader like Modi. I hope this time the people of Kerala will vote wisely but not blindly..for who ever it may be..

Calicut Corporation has got the worst record of maintaining the public spaces.I think crores of rupees spent along the beach would go in vain soon. This guys could have maintained Mananchira well with due diligence, but now spending crores of rupees for renovation of the same.Wasting the money from Govt's coffer.

ULCC has submitted a request to Calicut Corporation to take the necessary action aginst people using the bus bays in the mini bypass (Eranhippalam - Arayidathupalam sector) as workshops. ULCC has a maintenance contract for 5 years and they told they won't take the responsibilty of damages happen to the road due to the vehicle repair work going on here.

Our Corporation hasn't taken any action based on the letter given earlier. So ULCC has submitted a second request.

Is the road still getting used as a workshop?

Exactly!! The great "shapam" kozhikode has been experiencing for long long time. It started with Mananchira square which got ruined with no maintenance. We can cite many many examples for structures/places that got collapsed due to lack of proper maintenance. It will be started/opened with much noises, but authorities will forget it after that. The only reason for this is the lack of commitment from authorities to the work being done. "Aarko veendi jooli cheyyuka"

Remember the saying of innocent in Kilukam when he wins a lottery
"K ? ... K kure kandittundu..."

We have this feeling now when we hear of a mega project or something comes up with much hype. How much hype it gets, the pace in which it collapse will be higher!! What to say, we can only sit in gallery and see the play.

Kozhikode: The inaugural special service of the Kozhikode -Thiruvananthapuram Jan Shatabdi Express that would run via Kottayam was flagged off from Kozhikode station on Thursday by E. Ahamed, Union Minister of State for External Affairs.

This high speed train, which would be operated from here five days a week, except on Wednesday and Suday, was one of the new train services promised for Keralites in the last railway budget, but could be launched when the new budget was only a few weeks away.

However, Mr. Ahamed said he was immensely happy that Railways had been able to keep the promise in the same year of railway budget in which the train service was announced. He was also happy he had been witness to its launch though he had ceased to be a Railway Minister on Wednesday.

The Minister made it clear he did not agree with the views expressed by Mayor A.K. Premajam, who was chief guest at the function, that the Railway authorities were not “people-friendly” when its land was needed for development purposes. On the contrary, many senior Railway officials had been very supportive of his efforts to safeguard and promote the State's interests, Mr. Ahamed said.

M.K. Raghavan, MP, presided over the function. Kanathil Jameela, president of the district panchayat; Pradeep Kumar and P.M.A. Salam, MLAs; P.V. Gangadharan, president of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce; S.K. Raina, Railway Divisional Manager; and Deepak Krishan, General Manager, were present. The train would have only seven stoppages – at Shoranur, Thrissur, Ernakulam Town, Kottayam, Chengannur, Kayamkulam and Kollam . It would have three air-conditioned chair car coaches and 12 second class chair car coaches. Leaving Kozhikode at 6.15 a.m. it would reach Thiruvananthapuram at 1.45 p.m. Its return journey would begin at 2.20 p.m. to reach Kozhikode at 10.05 p.m. The train would not operate from Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday and Saturday.

I just passed through Calicut yesterday. Kalyan Silks building is huge and very tall.

NH-17 bypass is too crowded now like a city road. Those barricades placed in every 100 metres are making things worse. With this much traffic it needs to be widened to six lanes very soon.

It is a very crowded area with space constrains. I think, They are maintaining as much as possible they can. And I will vote for paragon for the best restaurant in city which serves good non veg as well as veg items.

Lol nice sychronized rofl.

But monorail is not an impractical project. Since that stretch is four laned with median there is no problem related to land acquisition. Over all cost will be much lesser than metro rail. It will be good if this got implemented in next 10-15 years.

It is practical if done in BOT. Don't worry the man who always cries "pothumekhala pothumekhala" is going to retire within a few months. Let us be optimistic and dream about a day when all cities in Kerala have mono rails and all cities and towns are connected with metro railways. ;)

Whenever the monorail gets constructed, the stretch to airport isn't needed. We either need to privatize the airport, or better yet, construct a new one within Calicut! Then lets get it linked.
Far fetched, but doable....

Under the terms of the agreement, Scomi will be the technology partner and systems integrator for the Monorail system.
“Our collaboration and joint bid activity for this monorail project reflects Scomi’s success in consolidating its position as one of the leading monorail solution providers in India,” commented Kanesan Veluppillai, president, Scomi International. “Joining forces with Geodesic is part of ongoing strategic efforts to continue our expansion plans in India to bid for more monorail projects in major cities such as Kolkalta, Chennai, New Delhi and Calicut.” -

Monorail Manufacturers Concentrate on India’s Infrastructure Boom

Apr. 12 – As the Indian economy develops, the need for massive improvements in its transportation network also increases.

With Mumbai’s first monorail service about to be launched and those familiar street level cantilevered rail lines now weaving their way above the city’s roads, other places in the country have already started taking notice. All three major monorail companies – Bombardier, Scomi and Hitachi – are setting up operations in India because of anticipated demand.

Several cities have already put out tenders for monorail construction, including Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Baroda, Bhopal, Calicut, Chennai, Cochin, Coimbatore, Delhi, Deharadun, Gandhinagar, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kolkota, Lucknow, Madurai, Nagpur, Noida, Panaji, Patna, Pune, Raipur, Surat, Thane, Trichy and Trivandrum.
