KSUDP envisages a clean city

Storm water drainage system, sewerage network planned

Projects to be commissioned in 2011

Consultant presents interim report

Kozhikode: A comprehensive sewerage network and storm water drainage system for the city envisaged under the Kerala Sustainable Urban Development Project (KSUDP) will be commissioned in 2011.

A sum of Rs.56.84 crore has been allotted for the sewerage component and Rs.31.78 crore for the drainage system. The Asian Development Bank is financing the KSUDP programme.

The Water and Power Consultancy Services- Institute for Social Achievement, consultant for the project, presented an interim report for councillors at a special meeting at the council hall here on Saturday. A draft of the final report will be ready by November 15.

Long-standing demand

A proper sewerage network and a storm water drainage system have been a long-standing demand of the residents. Efforts to redesign the sewerage network, which started in 1970, were earlier confined to laying pipes.

The new proposal envisages dividing the city into four zones and initially developing two zones for sewerage. A sum of Rs.2 crore has been set aside for preparing a master plan for the storm water drainage system.

As per the proposal, the sewerage network has been divided into two zones based on the population of the city. The scheme will benefit 1.80 lakh residents in 2041. Zone A will include coastal areas, railway line, Kallayi river and Bhatt Road while Zone B will cover areas in the eastern side of the railway tracks, Canoly Canal, Kallayi river, Puthiyangadi and Kunduparamba. The total area of the project is 18.90 km.

Although the project has been divided into two zones, it will have a single Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) at Karimbanappalam.

The effluent will be collected and treated at a lifting station near the Central Warehousing Corporation on Beach Road in Zone A. An office will be set up at the Headload Workers Welfare Board Office for the purpose. A pumping station will be established near the Mannanthala bridge.

Lifting station

The lifting station for Zone B will be set up at the Edakkad junction. A pumping station will be established near the Jail Staff Quarters.

The treatment plant will be set up based on the calculation that a person produces an effluent of 155 litres daily. The total water treated will come up to 300 lakh litres. This includes water from the septic tank.

The STP will be designed using the Fluidigel Aerolic Bio-reactor (FAB) technology. It will be free of pollution and environmental hazards. The treated water will be chlorinated and drained to Canoly Canal.

A generator facility will be made available at the STP. There will be ample landscaping and green belt in the area.

A contract will come into force on a turnkey basis for designing, constructing, commissioning and maintenance of the STP for five years.

The contract will give full responsibility to the contractors. Corporation workers will also be given training in connection with the programme.

Astronomy gallery to come up at RSC

Expected to come up by March 2009 to mark the first use of the telescope by Galileo Galilei 400 years ago

One of the major exhibits will be a Foucault Pendulum

A children’s park to come up in April 2009

KOZHIKODE: The Regional Science Centre (RSC) and Planetarium, Kozhikode, will set up an astronomy gallery, the first of its kind in the country, on its premises by March next year.

The gallery of 4,000 sq ft will be built at a cost of Rs.40 lakh. “It is expected to come up by March-end to coincide with the year 2009, to mark the use of telescope by Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei 400 years ago,” says V.S. Ramachandran, project coordinator, RSC.

One of the major exhibits would be a Foucault Pendulum. The pendulum was useful in showing the rotation of the earth on its own axis.

Another interesting exhibit would be titled ‘be an astronaut,’ where in the moon’s surface would be recreated along with a 3-D cut-out of an astronaut. A visitor could go near and take a photo by clicking a particular button on a machine so as to see himself as an astronaut at a nearby screen.

A life-size Galileo looking into a telescope would be another exhibit at the gallery. There would be 38 working models at the gallery, Mr. Ramachandran said.

Visitors to the RSC have been on the rise ever since the planetarium was set up in 1997. The period from April 1, 2007, to March 31, 2008, saw four lakh people visiting the centre, the highest in its history.

“We hope to cross the five-lakh mark for the year ending March 2009,” Mr. Ramachandran said.

A children’s park at the RSC would be coming up in April next year at a cost of Rs.5 lakh. The existing ‘fun science’ hall would be renovated and converted to a hall for showcasing emerging technologies, including bio-technology, nuclear science, space science and nano-technology, at a cost of Rs.15 lakh, Mr. Ramchandran said.

Malaysia keen on Indian satellite city project
KOZHIKODE, Nov 9 - Malaysian Minister for Public Works Datuk Mohamed Zin Mohamed said here that the Malaysian government was keen on investing Rs.6,000 crore for the development of a satellite city at Kinalur estate, near Balussery, in the district.

Talking to journalists after visiting the 275-acre site, he said his government proposed to invest the amount for development activities in a span of seven years.

The satellite township would include knowledge-based industries, medical city, education city and infotainment. The project is proposed to be completed in four phases. Entrepreneurs in Malaysia have also evinced interest in the projects, he said.
Mohamed Zin said a report based on his visit would be submitted to the Malaysian government.

The Malaysian government had recently given technical clearance for a proposal based on the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the State government-owned Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation (KSIDC) and the Construction Industry Development Board
(CIDB), a statutory body established in Malaysia, for setting up a Rs.2,500-crore satellite city at Kinalur Estate in September 2007.

Now the proposed investment has been raised from Rs.2,500 crore to Rs.6,000 crore.

Mohamed also said that the Malaysian government was eager to invest in other projects as well in the State. It would foster better relationship and growth between the two countries.

A.K. Saseendran, Balussery MLA; District Collector A. Jayathilak; KSIDC and CIDB officials also accompanied him during his visit to the estate.

Last year, CIDB chief executive officer Datuk' Ir. Hamzah bin Hasan and KSIDC managing director P.H. Kurian had signed the MoU in the presence of Minister for Industries Elamaram Karim and Malaysian Minister for Works Dato' Seri S. Samy Vellu.

Then the Malaysian government had proposed that it would set to set up infrastructure projects at a cost of Rs.500 crore and attract investments from that country worth Rs.2,500 crore in industrial and commercial activities after studying the feasibility report.

The project, if implemented, would provide jobs to 25,000 skilled and semi-skilled people.

Datuk Seri Samy Vellu had then also suggested the construction of a dedicated road from Kozhikode to the project location in Kinalur.

A proposal had then come up for setting up condominiums as well as office complexes on a 50-acre plot near the Karipur airport to cater to the needs of information technology professionals and businessmen.

NEW DELHI: The Indian Olympic Association on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kerala Government for the conduct of the National Games in the State in 2010.

The IOA President, Suresh Kalmadi, and the Kerala Sports Minister, Vijay Kumar, signed the MoU.

As per the agreement, Kerala would raise infrastructure by March 2010 at Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode for conducting the Games later that year. Kerala had last hosted the Games in 1987.

“This opportunity of hosting the Games will give an opportunity for Kerala to come up on the national scene in a big way once again,” said Mr. Kalmadi.......

The road was built in the 1970's, and most roads in the area can be named by the local residents. There's no specific history on that street, but it could have been named by the origianal residents, or a county engineer. My guess is that may have reminded someone of the city in India, so that's how it was named.

is that an interesting information??

A consortium comprising IJM Bhd and Malaysia Allied Health Science Academy College (MAHSA) is tipped to develop a medical city in Kerala once the state government gives its nod.

The Kerala State Industrial Development Corporation and Malaysia’s Construction Industry Development Board, both parties of the consortium, are engaged in serious talks to ink the agreement for the RM433 million (US$120 million) project in Kinalur in Kozhikode City.

“Through the CIDB we signed the memorandum of agreement with the Kerala state government in September and hope to sign the final agreement any time soon.

“The estimated investment for the first phase is likely to surpass US$120 million and could be completed in three years’ time.
“Malaysian companies have expressed interest to develop this project. This is a good opportunity for our country to export the expertise we have and develop our own technical knowledge,” Works Minister Datuk Mohd Zin Mohamed, who visited the project site, said. - Bernama

KOZHIKODE: Revathy Pattathanam, an annual cultural event that re-enacts the scholarly examinations held during the days of the Zamorins, was held here with various programmes on Tuesday.

‘Pattathana Sadas,’ a get-together of scholars, was held in the morning. P.K.S Raja, head of the Zamorin family of Kozhikode, presented a purse to honour Kalloor Madhavan Namboodiripad, a scholar at the ‘sadas.’ The event was held at the entrance to the Tali temple. The winner was chosen by Sri Kudalloor Namboodiripad.

Revathi Pattathanam was a scholarly examination held for seven days from the ‘Revathi’ star to the ‘Thiruvathira’ star in the Malayalam month of Thulam. This event was started in the 14th century by the Zamorins. The winner was conferred the title ‘Bhattar.’

Later in the day, P.K.S. Raja was led to the Zamorin Guruvayurappan School auditorium in a procession comprising caparisoned elephants, ‘thalappoli,’ ‘panchavadyam’ (percussion ensemble), a light lit at the Tali temple and a picture of Lord Mahadeva. Swami Adhyatmananda Saraswathi, head of the Chinmaya Mission in Kozhikode, formally inaugurated the Revathi Pattathanam programmes. He also delivered a talk on ‘Influence of the Upanishads on the Bhagavad Gita.’

A ‘vakyarthasadas,’ and an ‘aksharasloka sadas’ were also held later in the day. A.K.B. Nair and Thuravoor Viswambharan delivered lectures on different topics.

P.K.S. Raja presented the Krishnageethi Award to poet Vishnunarayanan Namboodiri at the valedictory function in the evening. The award for the best temple artist was presented to Krishnanattom artiste Damodaran Nair on the occasion. Anwar Jahan Zuberi, Vice-Chancellor, Calicut University, presided.

Kathakali and Krishnanattam performances were also held later.

KERALA is India’s southernmost state and its name literally translates to “the land of the coconuts”, of which there is an abundance.

Nov 9 2008 by Paul Cole, Sunday Mercury

The ever-so-friendly Keralites also claim it is “God’s own country”, and with Hindus, Muslims and Christians peacefully co-existing together, it is easy to understand why they think that way. The state is also one of the 10 Paradises Found by the National Geographic Traveller, because of its diverse geography and overwhelming greenery.

The last time we went to Kerala, we visited Cochin, Munnar and Alleppey. This time, to see more of this lovely state, we headed for Calicut, the birthplace of the famous quality cotton calico.

The Calicut area has many more claims to fame. For instance, the first European to reach India by the sea route around the southern cape of Africa — Vasco da Gama — landed at Kappad about 10 miles away in 1498 and heralded the period of Portuguese supremacy. From our base in neighbouring Goa it is possible to fly or take a train to Calicut.

We opted for the 70-minute flight down the west coast. Even before we landed at Calicut, the greenness of Kerala was clearly visible.

As soon as our friend Prakash, a Keralite who works in Goa, was aware we were going to Calicut, he insisted that we must visit his parents Chandran and Shobhana. They were excellent hosts and, with Prakash and his family coming south at the same time, we were fortunate to have them to show us their area. We were soon introduced to other relatives living nearby and enjoyed wonderful hospitality, including lovely traditional meals served on banana leaves.

A family trip took us on a thrilling drive three thousand feet up into the Ghats. On the way there were numerous hairpin bends and absolutely spectacular scenery. The journey took us through bustling towns and past fields of rice and pineapples and plantations of banana, rubber, spices and, of course, coconuts.

Our first stop was at Pookot Lake resort, before going on to Kalpetta for a typical local lunch called tali, consisting of rice, mixed vegetables and lots of sauces.

Then it was on through the beautiful tea estates that looked like a lush green carpet hugging the hills and, finally, to the magnificent Suchipara waterfall. The city’s Portuguese heritage is well evident and it still plays an important role in the international spice trade.

Elegant hotels

Close to our hotel was Calicut’s fragrant spice market. It certainly is an energetic city, but I did not mind the short forays into the crowded shops and markets, as the tranquillity and serenity of our temporary home was always so welcoming on our return.

Thanks to Prakash, we also took advantage of the nationwide one day strike to take a complete tour of Calicut city in an auto-rickshaw. We stayed at the elegant Taj Residency hotel, set amid groves of coconut palms and five acres of that lush greenery of which Kerala is rightly proud. It has 70 well-appointed and spacious bedrooms and four suites.

The hotel also houses the world famous Taj Ajurveda Centre. Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old science aimed at rejuvenation. Programmes are up to 35 days and attract patients from all over the world. However, it is not just a case of lying back and being pampered.

For those prepared to put in the effort, there is a well-equipped fitness centre, as well as a steam room and outdoor pool. And all of this as Kerala enjoyed 30C (86F) temperatures as winter set in back in the UK. Dining options at the resort are also excellent and allow one to eat casually or enjoy a fine restaurant with a great selection of delectable dishes and refreshing drinks.

We also ate breakfasts and light lunches in the Cape Camorin coffee shop and evening meals in the Coral Reef restaurant which overlooks the swimming pool.

The city of Calicut — now known as Kozhikode — is derived from the Malayalam expression Koyil Kodu meaning fortified palace, which was later anglicised to Calicut. It is the capital of Malabar and is on the northern coast of Kerala, so its beaches are lapped by the Arabian Sea.

The best place we found to learn more about the city’s history was the Krishna Memon Museum, a real storehouse of artefacts

Other local attractions there are the famous Thusharagiri waterfalls, Dolphins Point, where lots of them frolic in the sea, and the superb Science Planetarium, which reveals the mysteries of the universe. To end a wonderful trip, we decided on another first – an overnight train journey.

At every station we stopped at there seemed to be hundreds of hawkers jumping aboard, selling everything imaginable. Hopefully, they all managed to get off before the train departed.

Like the Goan people, the Keralites are cheerful, friendly and bright and, besides their people, Goa and Kerala have a lot in common. Both have beautiful beaches, natural beauty, bustling and interesting towns and a perfect climate when it is winter back home.

The bad news is govt is not serious abt this ciberpark. They wanted to keep this hot news afloat till next election. GOVT has taken out the land aquisition of this project from fast track mode. Letter is already faxed to collector. So it seems atleast 1 year wil take take over the land(as per MB). This has become just like Kannur airport for which govt sat idle for 2 years and now suddenly they started giving ad for EOI. After all GOVt is run by politicians of kerala.

True, yaar. The same case with Kollam Techno Park Proposed in 49 acres at Kundara. It is all political excercises by the politicians.

Bahrain Air plans flights to Calicut

MANAMA: Bahrain Air is to operate to Calicut, Kerala, making it the airline's second destination in India, it was revealed yesterday. The airline will also double its fleet by October next year, said managing director Ibrahim Al Hamer.

"We are happy to announce that we have got traffic rights to operate to Calicut, one of the most popular destinations for Keralites living in Bahrain," he told the GDN.

"The new service will be launched on March 16 next year. We already operate daily flights from Bahrain to Kochi, Kerala."

Mr Al Hamer said Bahrain Air would also operate to Abu Dhabi, starting on March 22.

"We shall initially operate three flights a week to Calicut and eight to Abu Dhabi," he revealed.

"Within the GCC, we already operate to Dubai, Doha and Kuwait."

Bahrain Air plans to expand as per the business plan, which is approved by the board members and the executive management of the company, said Mr Al Hamer.

"Last week we celebrated the inauguration of our 11th station, Kuwait and the operation of both Asyut and Luxor in Egypt," he added.

"Our 14th destination will be the Sudanese capital Khartoum, which will be launched on December 16.

"With the launch of Calicut and Abu Dhabi, the number of destinations will increase to 16."

With the arrival of the third aircraft last week - an Airbus 319 - the company is expanding its network and flight frequency to many of its destinations, said Mr Al Hamer.

"We shall take delivery of another A319 in March next year and two brand new A320s in April and October next year respectively," he said.

"Our fleet will thus be doubled to six aircraft next year."

Bahrain Air's load factor has been increasing steadily, said Mr Al Hamer.

"This month our load was 62pc, and our target is to increase it to 75pc next year.

"We are also proud of our on-time performance which now stands at 98pc."

The Airbus A320 aircraft operates for Bahrain Air with 168 seats, including 12 seats on the Premium class and the A319 has 138 seats.

"Bahrain Air is proud to be a competitive premium service carrier with affordable fares, providing its customers with the highest levels of service and reliability," said Mr Al Hamer.

"The new airline aims to play a major role in linking Bahrain, the financial centre of the Middle East, with the business community in the region by providing economical and fast point to point air service."

see what the Airline Network News and Analysis Speak about International Traffic
International markets still growing
While the domestic market endures a difficult time international traffic is still growing by as much as 6% in September. Growth has slowed in recent months from a peak of 22% last November.

Source: Airports Authority of India

September’s growth is impressive as India’s busiest international airport in Mumbai reported a 1.5% fall in traffic. However, this was compensated for by strong growth at Calicut (+40.2%), Cochin (+18.5%) and Chennai (+11.8%).

VS opens first phase of Sarovaram Bio-Park

KOZHIKODE: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan inaugurated the first phase of the Sarovaram Bio-Park project here on Sunday.

Mr. Achuthanandan said at the inauguration that the government would not promote any tourism project that would ravage the ecosystem. “We are not to pursue any skyscraper tourism. Nature, with all its pristine beauty, is the strength of Kerala and we have to cash in on that strength without disturbing it,” he said.

Mr. Achuthanandan, who maintained that the concerns of environmentalists and nature lovers would be addressed while continuing with the second phase of the project, said “all such concerns are misplaced.”

Model bio-park

He said the project, which was also a rare eco-diversity centre, would be a model bio-park for the State by the time it was completed in three phases.

Presiding over the function, Tourism Minister Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said the project would take the city of Kozhikode far ahead in its journey towards emerging as an international tourism destination.

Mr. Balakrishnan said a team of experts had been entrusted with looking into the possibilities of developing the Canoly Canal into a major water transport-tourism spot. “The project will be initiated on reception of the expert report,” he said.

He said the government would act vibrantly and intelligently to face the crisis faced by the State in the tourism sector on account of the global economic slowdown.

Industries Minister Elamaram Karim inaugurated the open-air auditorium at the venue. He said that weekly cultural programmes would be staged at the auditorium as part of the three-month tourism festival Utsav, organised by the Tourism Department.

The walkway at the project site was inaugurated by Forest Minister Benoy Viswom. Mayor M. Bhaskaran opened the boat club.

The project would cost a total of Rs.17.5 crore. The work, with technical assistance from the Kerala Industrial and Technology Consultancy Organisation (KITCO), was being supervised by Tourism Resorts (Kerala) Ltd. District Collector A. Jayathilak welcomed the gathering. M.P. Veerendrakumar, MP; A. Pradeep Kumar, MLA; P.M.A. Salam, MLA; district panchayat president K.P. Kunhahammed Kutty spoke.

The city’s green lungs

Project identified 200 acres of wetlands at Kottuli

Only 98 acres is government land

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KOZHIKODE: The Sarovaram Bio-Park project, the first phase of which was completed and opened to the public here on Sunday, has been long-awaited by the people of the city.

As per national standards, there should be at least 0.4 hectares of open space and park per 1,000 persons for healthy living. Accordingly, Kozhikode city needs 320 hectares of open space and park. The Sarovaram project, envisaged in the 1980s, identified nearly 200 acres of wetlands at Kottuli in the city and Nedungottur village.

The project could become a boon for the people of the city who throng either the Mananchira square or the beach in the evenings, especially on holidays, in the absence of other alternatives.

Of the 200-acre project area, only 98 acres is government land; the rest is with private parties. The government will have to acquire the remaining land to take the project forward.

The Kottuli wetlands is home to seven species of mangroves, 20 mangrove associates, 20 species of waterbirds, 11 species of fishes, one species of prawn, and one species of crab.

The first phase of the project, which cost Rs.3 crore, involves canal walkway, main gate, open air theatre and boat club. Walkways on either side of the Canoli Canal have been laid with inter-locking cobblestone up to nearly 500 metres and seats and lights have been provided. I'm not sure, but Kant is known for the Mananchira square, the railway station link road, proposed multistorey car parking at Muthalakulam, proposed upper deck road over Kallai road, among others. I believe there was also an idea to develop an underground shopping complex on the lines of Delhi's Palika bazar. Had he been around, Calicut would've had changed long back. Sadly, he was pushed out by dirty politics.
Anyways, I think we should have his name somewhere. At least as grateful, development minded, and development appreciating citizens, we should be able to invite him for the inauguration of any of these projects, if possible Sarovaram itself. Far-fetched I know. But its the least we can do.

He also has a lot of the credit of boosting the Tourism sector in Kerala to his name. Would be a nice touch to have him back for the inauguration. Realty experts say that the current downslide in the sector will not last long. One of the reasons they cite is the shortage of housing and commercial space in the country. Another is the positive trend seen in infrastructure development. Above all, the Union and the State governments have initiated packages to prop up the sagging markets.

But the real estate sector has been one the worst affected by the economic slowdown. Its impact has taken a toll on all classes of people. Traditionally, Malayalis invest heavy in real estate. But of late, after the global meltdown, people are diversifying their investment portfolio.

They have become choosy in investing their hard-earned money after the crash in the stock market and the rampant correction seen in the real estate sector. They now opt for bank deposits after many nationalised banks increased the interest rates, go for systematic investment plans in mutual funds or invest in gold.

Positive outlook

Studies conducted by real estate consultants and agencies, however, say that the realty scenario in Kozhikode city looks positive. It is among the top 50 fastest growing cities in the country in real estate.

However, investments done only for the long term will yield good returns, considering the uncertainty in these times of economic crisis. In fact, Real Estate Bank International (REBI), a Bangalore-based company that launched business in the State recently, has found that Kozhikode has the potential to grow and yield better returns from property than many metros of the country.

Short-term gains will be marginal in residential property and commercial property in the current circumstances. It is not known how long the correction in land prices will last. Brokers jacking up prices have led to this state of affairs, builders say. The short-term profits from land deals in residential segment in the city will be between 8.5 per cent and 9.5 per cent and for commercial segment, between 14 per cent and 15 per cent.

Even then, the returns are higher in Kozhikode than those in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai.

In long-term deals, Kozhikode will give higher returns both in the residential and commercial segments than the other cities. The yields are 24 to 29 per cent in the residential segment and 30-33 per cent in the commercial section, according to the study.

Property developers believe that all-round development of Kozhikode will reflect in the growth of north Kerala. The investment in land and basic infrastructure is expected to touch Rs.1,500 crore in the future. According to T.P. Raoof, senior manager, REBI, the demand for quality living spaces and retailers demand for mall spaces have gone up recently. The trend is likely to continue with the upcoming projects, including two information technology parks.

The State IT Mission is promoting the Cyber City, while Kinfra is developing another IT park.

Besides, remittances from Gulf countries are high after the depreciation of the rupee against the dollar. Banks have shown a huge inflow of non-resident Indian remittance. Some of the banks have shown an increase in telegraphic transfer of money in the range from 40 per cent to 80 per cent. Remittances started increasing in July.

Bankers say the hike in deposit rates have led people to park money in banks. Kozhikode city has a huge potential for setting up multiplexes, retail malls and theme parks for outdoor recreation. Another is the multi-level freeway for better accessibility with all roadside modern facilities.

The city has major open spaces such as Mananchira Square, beaches and the recently opened Sarovaram eco-park with boating facilities. The Swapna Nagari grounds near the park have been a permanent fair venue.

Future developments include ring roads, parking spaces for commercial projects and a metro rail service.

Studies show that Kozhikode has been rated one of the safest and most economical cities in the country.

It is rated among the top 30 cities in the country in terms of ease of transacting business. Besides, it is well connected to all major cities in the country by air, rail and road.

NASSCOM planning to open Calicut chapter

Steps on to include more firms in Calicut chapter

NASSCOM to hold seminar in January

KOZHIKODE: The city is on course to becoming an Information Technology (IT) hub in South India. As part of its plans is the initiative to start a Calicut chapter of the National Association of Software and Service Companies (NASSCOM).

Five companies out of the 17 firms in the State that have NASSCOM membership are based in Kozhikode. “The city needs to get no less than 10 members. We have also decided to club companies from in and around Coimbatore to join the Calicut chapter,” Duleep Sahadevan, president of the Calicut Forum for IT, told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

The matter has been taken up with NASSCOM regional director K. Purushothaman in Chennai. The regional chapter has confirmed that Kozhikode is an emerging Tier-II city in the IT sector after the two-day programme ‘Empower IT@ Malabar,’ held here in August. The chapter would be formed in a couple of months, he said.

Discussions are on to rope in more IT and ITeS firms to form the NASSCOM Calicut chapter. The annual subscription fee is Rs.25,000, besides joining fee of Rs.10,000. There would be a screening process and the companies should submit a business balance-sheet, Mr. Sahadevan said.

Incidentally, Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram have no local chapters though both the cities have several software and IT-enabled service companies.

He said NASSCOM had now changed its outlook on Kozhikode. It has agreed to hold a one-day seminar on Animation and Gaming in early January. At least four major IT companies are expected to take part in the seminar.

The proposed Cyber Park at Nellikode and Knowledge Park at Ramanattukara will bring the city on the IT map of the country. Earlier Kozhikode had not been showcased well as an IT destination, said Nityanand Kamath, president of Calicut IT Initiative.

Perhaps that is why the NASSCOM did not consider Kozhikode in its list of 50 cities in India suitable for the IT-Business Processing Outsourcing (BPO) industry. The study was carried out by NASSCOM and the global management consultancy AT Kearney, based on each city’s stage of development in IT-BPO sector, a few months ago.

The locations were classified into four groups: leader, challenger, follower and aspirant. Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram and Coimbatore figured in the list of challengers. The study gave an in-depth analysis of the 50 locations for attracting investments from the IT-BPO industry.

It focussed on key parameters such as knowledge pool availability; infrastructure; social and living environment, government support and operating cost.

At present, 90 per cent of the total direct employment of about 20 lakh in the IT-BPO industry is spread across seven leading locations, including Bangalore, Chennai and Hyderabad. However, companies are looking beyond these cities in the wake of rising real estate costs, increased attrition and saturated infrastructure.

The IT-BPO industry is expected to grow significantly in the next decade. Even if the rate of growth is 15 per cent, the sector will provide direct employment to about 80 lakh people by 2018. If a direct to indirect employment ratio of 1:3 is assumed, this translates to incremental indirect employment of 1.80 crore, it was pointed out.

Kozhikode to become 'hunger-free' city

December 18, 2008 11:28 IST

At a time when several states are making efforts to sell rice at Rs 2 per kg to the poor, the Kozhikode municipal corporation plans to provide the mid-day meal at the same price to make it a hunger-free city.

"The primary aim is to make Kozhikode a hunger-free city by providing mid-day meals to the needy at Rs two," corporation deputy mayor P T Abdul Latheef said.

The idea to launch the novel scheme was mooted at a recent meeting of government officials of the health and finance department at Kozhikode.

"A project report in this regard has already been submitted to the government and the modalities to implement it will be worked out at a ministerial-level meeting to be held at Kozhikode on December 22," he said, but declined to provide details of cost estimates.

Full details of how the project will be implemented will be revealed after the meeting, he said.

A year after it was declared as 'litter-free' city, the corporation is now keen on achieving another first by becoming a 'hunger-free' city, Latheef said.

Initially, the crporation plans to implement the scheme at government hospitals where the visitors would be offered the meal.

"Then, it will be extended to all who find it hard to meet both the ends," he said.
Unlike the free noon meal scheme offered in schools in some states, the Rs two mid-day meal will be made available for all.

"We will form separate centres for the purpose from where any person can have the meal," Latheef said.

Latheef said apart from government funds, financial help would also be sought from voluntary organisations to run the project effectively.
Noting that the city had gained substantially ever since it was declared 'litter-free', he said the corporation now wanted to ensure that the needy people have one meal a day.

Kozhikode was selected by leading Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama as the best corporation in the state for its cleanliness drive launched last year introducing strict measures to ensure waste and garbage disposal.

Besides banning plastic bags weighing below 30 microns, it also announced a penalty on individuals and institutions responsible for making roads dirty.

To support the cause, 'Kudumbashree' (self help group) units, comprising women members, were also formed by the corporation to pick up waste from every house in the city limits for a fee of Rs 30 a month and destroy them at an isolated place on the outskirts.

'If everything goes well, the Rs 2 mid-day meal scheme will be launched by the second week of January, thereby enabling Kozhikode to become the first corporation to do so', Latheef said.

25 acers in the cyberpark belongs to ULCCS. They are in talk with the Govt to start there own IT park there...Land already transfered to cyberpark..

Award for Uralungal co-operative society

KOZHIKODE: The Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society (ULCCS) has won the award of National Co-operative Development Corporation (NCDC) for Co-operative Excellence for 2008.

The biennial award carries a cash prize of Rs.50,000 and a citation. Ramesh Palery, president, ULCCS, would receive the award from Union Minister for Agriculture Sharad Pawar in New Delhi on January 15, it was announced here.

The award was instituted by the NCDC in 2002, and is presented to primary cooperatives in recognition of their achievements and to motivate them for better performance.

ULCCS, a society registered under Co-operative Societies Act 1967, having its headquarters at Madapally in Vadakara, undertakes civil construction works. It has completed nearly 3,000 major projects in the State. Currently nearly 200 projects costing more than Rs.40 crore are in various stages of completion. The benefits and profits are either ploughed back or shared by the worker-members of the society.

The Kozhikode bypass, Edesserry Kadavu Bridge-Kozhikode Town Improvement work, and Sarovaram Project are some of the landmark works being executed by the society.

An ISO 9001:2001 certified organisation, the ULCCS is also poised to be a leading participant in the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), Kozhikode, for IT as it owns 25 acres there. ULCCS has consistently registered an annual growth of 35 per cent.

The society owns a captive quarry with granite stone deposit for a number of years and has modernised quarrying and crushing capacity. the ULCCS is an organisation with a difference as its directors also put in work daily at supervisory and other levels and earn wages like other members.

The beach beckons in Kozhikode city

Sea-facing flats have been a big hit with homebuyers. A look at how the Kozhikode beach is changing as builders make huge investments.

- PHOTO: S. RAMESH KURUP
http://www.hindu.com/pp/2008/12/27/images/2008122750480401.jpg
IN NATURE'S LAP: Buildings overlook the Kothi estuary in Kozhikode.
The Kozhikode beach lures anyone who likes to saunter on silvery sands and soak in salubrious gentle wind. The Arabian Sea, serene a minute and ferocious the other, mesmerises. To live on these shores and enjoy the gift of nature is a fortune.
Many are lucky to own beachside houses. Many others got a chance to live along the wonderful coastline, as they bought flats built by branded companies, such as Skyline Builders, a few years ago.
The craze for owning sea-facing flats continues despite the slowdown in the real estate business, builders say.
Property developers woo customers with fresh mega beachfront projects. One of them is Ritz Mareena of Galaxy Builders at the Bhat Road junction on the northern side of the beach. This 26-storey beachfront apartment complex will have 100 units, including two penthouses, on 140 cents of land. The Ritz Mareena will be the tallest building in north Kerala, its promoters say.
The flats will offer the residents a view of the sea and the city. The facilities on offer include a helipad; a multi-purpose gym; a gymnasium; a beauty salon; a swimming pool; a mini theatre; a business centre; a supermarket; a centralised cooking gas supply system; and round-the-clock security.
With this and several more projects, the long shoreline of Kozhikode city is getting ready to don a new look.
Apollo Seabreeze, promoted by Apollo Build-Tec (India) Ltd., is another new initiative on the beach. The 10-storey complex will have two- and three-bedroom flats and two penthouses.
A salient feature of the project, the company says, is that all are sea-view flats. Their floor areas range from 1,300 sq.ft to 1950 sq.ft. The penthouses on the ninth and 10th floors will be of 4,192 sq.ft and 3,332 sq.ft, respectively.
Automatic bed and capsule lifts are on offer. The swimming pool will be an infinity pool with a view that merges with the sea. A rooftop party area, an association hall, a recreation area and a sauna and fitness centre are among the offers.
Another beachfront project is Seashells from Pentagon Builders. Seashells will have twin towers connected by a skybridge.
The promoters say the project in Gandhi Nagar colony will be an architectural marvel and will redefine cosmopolitan lifestyle. It will have three- and four-bedroom and duplex flats spread over 11 floors. All of them will be wi-fi hotspots. There will be centralised reticulated gas supply. Car-parking space will be provided.
Property developers say that the beach has undergone radical changes in the past few years. Tourism, in a way, has pushed real estate business in the region.
Beautification projects

The State government recently sanctioned Rs.6.5 crore for five projects to beautify the beach. The City Corporation has completed a Rs.3-crore beautification project from the Corporation office to Gandhi Road. Granite pavements, seats facing the sea, a park and the lighthouse are the attractions.
Public Works Minister Mons Joseph has assured the city planners that the 4-km Beach Road will be widened. The government has agreed, in principle, to develop the Kamburam beach, adjoining the Kozhikode beach. The Rs.1-crore project includes an open stage on the beach.
Another Corporation project plans to spend Rs.2.5 crore on building galleries for people to unwind in the evenings, a beach centre, a children’s playground and a garden on Bhat Road.
A hospitality management academy is coming up on the beach. Infrastructures Kerala Ltd. has proposed a heritage hotel and an international convention centre in the area.
Builders say the new projects target not only non-resident Indians but also upwardly mobile youth who live in the country. The younger generation is choosy about location. Beachfront apartments are expensive but they offer luxury.
Besides, homebuyers can look forward to clean air and a refreshing environment, they say.
