Project Description
Location: Toronto, Ontario
Size:
Completion: 2011
The expansion of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto reflects the school’s vision to redesign business education for the 21st century with a curriculum based on Integrative Thinking. Located in downtown Toronto, and one of the world’s most diverse cities, the design was conceived to directly support the Rotman School’s educational mandate to foster a new way to think and innovate on creative business.
The new structure will be fully integrated with the existing Rotman School, and will house the Desautels Centre for Integrative Thinking, the Lloyd and Delphine Martin Prosperity Institute, and other research programs and Institutes for Excellence, classrooms, study space and event facilities. The new building will aspire to LEED certification, and make a significant impact on the vitality of the St. George campus.

ggaleazz November 5th, 2008, 06:01 PM meh, very plain...
You'd think, even with it being a business school that UofT would put a bit more effort into this.
If ever there was a place that could use some revivalist architecture it's UofT.
urbandreamer March 17th, 2010, 01:47 AM It's sort of refreshing to see the old CIUT house gone--a clean slate design. There's a very deep hole dug, looks like crane will arrive any day now. I was too lazy to cross the street to get a better shot, so this will have to do:

Elkhanan1 March 17th, 2010, 07:08 AM They should have cleared away the other house too rather than incorporate it awkwardly into the new complex à la Bahen Centre. There doesn't seem to be anything remarkable about it.
urbandreamer March 17th, 2010, 01:46 PM I'm glad they kept it. It's nice to keep parts of the campus as it appeared in its early years. The house has nice red brick details they don't make anymore.

Taller, Better April 14th, 2010, 09:16 PM Absolutely keep the house. We should rejoice the fact that it is still there and that it still has warmth and charm a century later. I am not sure if that can be said of any modern structure that would replace it. If we bulldoze them all, then we will lose the scale and character of these large, ambling Victorian/Edwardian family houses. Look what has happened on St Thomas, with sweeping away all the Edwardians (in some cases for a condo project that seems to have been cancelled), in each case the rationale being that the individual house or apartment block was not of any outstanding historical value. Once we sweep them all away we realize too late that it is their gentle scale and warm materials/craftsmanship that brings a human touch to a neighbourhood. That is what makes them remarkable.

Agree. It's not so much that these are over the top stunningly beautiful buildings we're saving, for the most part, but they are nice. And the best part is, they look so great when combined with sleek and modern new additions. I love that combination, when it's done right. It's a nod to the past, but the focus is still the (usually) much larger new portion anyway. Like Taller, for me it's partly about maintaining a nice scale to a neighbourhood. Big institutional buildings can be overwhelming and these old homes are a nice way to make the scale feel more human.
isaidso April 17th, 2010, 01:38 AM I like that they kept the house for historical reference.

Built on the premise of integrative thinking using both horizontal and vertical connections, the new construction for the Rotman Expansion is almost topped out.
From their website (http://www.rotman.utoronto.ca/expansion/newbuilding.htm): "“KPMB’s design expresses our core mission to pursue scholarly excellence and promote the power of creativity and Integrative Thinking,” says the Rotman School’s Assistant Dean, Integrative Planning & Chief Operating Officer Mary-Ellen Yeomans. “Their design emphasizes strategic connectivity, both inside and out. The architecture draws on the value of what surrounds it and expands that value beyond the site, well into the campus and the city of Toronto.”"
Here is the render for the site:

The U of T has numerous midblock connections. Here's the view from Massey College towards St. George Street:

And a closer look at the backside of the building and what appears to be the loading dock:

Along the back is a piece of cladding and glass which appears much, much, much darker than what is shown in the above render:

Thanks for posting the pictures btw. I almost always love anything that U of T builds
Looking/Up February 8th, 2011, 06:05 PM One of my professors is just livid with this new building, because it blocks his view of Trinity from his office

jje10001 May 16th, 2011, 09:03 PM This building looks much darker than what the rendering depicted. Hopefully it'll be a little brighter when they turn on the lights inside.
urban 2.0 May 18th, 2011, 08:25 AM What's up with SQUARE?
Seriously? Do architects in Toronto know what a curve is?
How about colour?
Terminator Krzysztof August 22nd, 2011, 03:16 AM walked by the building two days ago and it is really dark glass is nice but if it was blue it would look much better
rise_against August 22nd, 2011, 06:28 AM Really? Now people want more blue??? Hahaha people are so funny.

AndrewJM3D August 23rd, 2011, 04:24 AM This building is all but done now. Time for some new pics I think.
Travis007 August 23rd, 2011, 05:18 PM The finished building looks nice, although I think UW's new Quantum Nano Centre looks better.
