Plans to create the world's largest university for women only - set to be completed in Riyadh in 2010 - are due to take a step forward on Wednesday.

Ghazanfar Ali Khan | Arab News
RIYADH: Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah yesterday laid the foundation for the Kingdom’s first women-only university, which is to be built at a cost of SR15 billion on the eastern suburbs of Riyadh.

The Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University, with a capacity to enroll some 40,000 students, will offer courses in subjects that women find difficulty studying at universities where strict gender segregation is enforced.

On arrival at the construction site, King Abdullah was received by Riyadh Gov. Prince Salman, Minister of Finance Ibrahim Al-Assaf, Minister of Higher Education Khaled Al-Anqari, government officials and other members of the royal family.

Speaking during the foundation-laying ceremony, Al-Assaf said, “This is a milestone in the Kingdom’s history, particularly in the history of women’s education. The campus would include an administration building, a central library, conference centers, buildings for 15 academic faculties, several laboratories and a 700-bed hospital equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

“Some areas in the campus would be allocated for research in nanotechnology, bio-sciences and information technology in collaboration with the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology,” he said.

He added that the campus, spread over eight million sq. meters, would also include housing for university staff, mosques, a school, a kindergarten and exclusive amusement centers for families and students.

“In line with the king’s directions, the university would have a high-tech transport system with automatic and computer-controlled vehicles linking all important facilities at the campus round the clock,” the finance minister said.

He said the university’s design is environment-friendly.

Al-Anqari expressed his deep gratitude to King Abdullah for launching the project. “The king’s presence here shows his generous support for women empowerment in Saudi Arabia and his keen desire to promote higher education,” he said.

He added that a number of contractors have been pre-qualified by the Finance Ministry for the construction contract, and that the project would be the best model campus in the region.

Princess Al-Jowhara bint Fahd, the university’s president, said the institution is designed to become the world’s largest center of higher learning for women. “It would double the admission capacity of women students,” she said in a statement. “The university would have 13 colleges, including those for medicine, dentistry, nursing, naturopathy, information technology, languages, instant translation and pharmacy.”

“There are currently 26,000 girls studying in different faculties in the university,” she added.

Princess Al-Jowhara also expressed her happiness at the university’s high-tech design and thanked King Abdullah for his deep interest in the educational development of Saudi women.

The Kingdom is keen to empower women. The government recently urged the private sector to play a larger role in creating jobs for the rising number of women graduates

Figures released by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) and the Saudi government show that women make up 58 percent of the total student population of Saudi universities.

Al-Anqari said this was a record for women’s education. “But such an impressive achievement in tertiary education participation is not matched in the workplace, because only 16 percent of Saudi women work, mostly in the education sector,” said a UNESCO report.

During a recent visit to the Kingdom, Yakin Ertek, the UN rapporteur on violence against women, urged the Saudi government to establish the necessary infrastructure for women’s participation in all government institutions and private businesses, and also in the Kingdom’s decision-making processes.

Finance Ministry to award Riyadh university contracts

Saudi Arabia's Finance Ministry is set to award three key university contracts by the end of January.
Bids totaling SR43bn ($11.5bn) for work on the new campus at Riyadh University for Women were submitted in October 2008.

The work has been split into three packages. The first two contracts will cover the majority of construction work at the site, including various low-rise faculty buildings and associated works.

The low-bidder for the first package was Saudi Oger, with a bid of SR17bn. Saudi Binladin Group is the low bidder for the second contract, with a bid of SR15bn, and the local El-Seif Engineering Contracting Company has submitted the lowest bid for the infrastructure package, at SR11bn (MEED 31:10:08).

According to a source close to the project, the three firms are currently in talks with the university as it undertakes value engineering to reduce the scope and budget. It is expected that the value of bids could be reduced by up to 15 per cent.

Riyadh Sun
February 5th, 2009, 12:17 PM
The bid deadline for the fourth package of the Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University for Women is set to be extended by one month to the end of March.
Bids were due to be submitted on 28 February, but the client, the Finance Ministry has issued more details for the package, prompting requests from contractors for the deadline extension.

The SR1bn ($267m) fourth package covers the construction of a 10 kilometre-long monorail network to link facilities at the university.

MEED reported on 30 January that three packages totaling SR30bn at the university have been awarded by the Finance Ministry.

Saudi Oger was awarded the first package, worth SR12.5bn, Saudi Binladin Group won the second contract, worth SR10bn, and El-Seif Engineering & Contracting won the third, worth SR8bn (MEED 30:01:09).

Two further packages were subsequently awarded. Saudi Binladin Group won the second contract, worth SR10bn. Like Oger's contract, it covers the construction of low-rise faculty buildings and associated works. El-Seif Engineering & Contracting won the third, worth SR8bn, which covers infrastructure and plant stations (MEED 31:10:08).

Work at the 3 square-kilometre site is expected to take two years to complete.

Arabtec starts work in Saudi Arabia

Arabtec Construction has started work on its first project in Saudi Arabia.
The SR1.5 billion ($408 million) contract involves the construction of 46 buildings with a total built-up area of about 250,000 square metres at the Princess Noura Abdul Rahman University in Riyadh.

The work was awarded as a sub contract by the Saudi Binladin Group (SBG) which was awarded an estimated SR10bn contract for building works at the university early this year.

The contract award follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding for the formation of Arabtec Saudi Arabia in March.

The venture is a partnership between Arabtec Construction, and two Saudi Companies, Prime International Group Services and SBG subsidiary CPC Services Company (MEED 8:3:09).

The company is in negotiations for two other major contracts in the Kingdom.

Will this university actually be in session in September? It seems a stellar institution for women, and I would love to be part of it, but I am thinking that the company hiring the English teachers is not being forthcoming about the entire picture. Hi Elizabass. As far as I know, Princess Nora University is under construction and is yet to be built. There are numerous English institutions in Saudi, however, that are known to be excellent. So i would definitely look for one that has the most benefits/compensations. Normally, companies hiring abroad offer a package of benefits along with the position such as a free apartment, car, and so on. Since you're a female, you'd get additional benefits more than that of mens. For example, they would hire a chauffeur for you to compensate for the women's right to drive. I hope that helps.

Vision Electro Mechanical Company, a subsidiary of Construction Products Holding Company (CPC), has won an SR1.31 billion (US $349mn) contract to carry out MEP works at Princess Noura Bint Abdurrahman Girls University in Riyadh.

The company was awarded the job by the project’s main contractor, Saudi Binladin Group. Vision will have around 4000 men on site and the job will take 24 months to complete.

“Since the beginning of the works in the University we were very keen to participate in the implementation of its electromechanical works,” said Eng Hassan Chahine, chief executive director of Vision.

“The diversity of CPC companies enabled us to carry out any construction tasks assigned to us in the most appropriate and satisfactory way that suits our clients."

Work will involve the installation of electricity systems, lighting controls, electrical distribution controls, cooling and heating systems, water systems, fire alarms and sanitation works.

In early January, Vision handed over a refrigeration station used to power the AC system in King Abdul Aziz International Airport’s Eastern Hajj Terminal.

By SAEED AL-KHOTANI | ARAB NEWS

Published: Mar 12, 2010 23:20 Updated: Mar 12, 2010 23:20

RIYADH: Round-the-clock construction work has been taking place near King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh for the last few months.

On a 94-square kilometer-site, the new campus of the Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman University is being built. It will be one of the largest higher education institutions for women in the world.

It is really hard for anyone not to notice the scaffolding, cranes, loaded trucks and intense activity at the site.

The workers were meant to have met a 2010 deadline, but this has now been pushed back to sometime next year.

A source told Arab News that more than half of the construction work has been completed already.

The university council suggested naming the university after Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah at the foundation-laying ceremony in October. He politely declined and suggested naming it after Princess Noura bint Abdul Rahman instead.

Princess Noura was the king’s aunt and the older and very much beloved sister of his father, the Kingdom’s founder, King Abdul Aziz.

Some historical sources say the princess, who enjoyed great respect and superior status in the founder’s heart, was the one who urged him to leave Kuwait, where he and his family were in exile, to try to regain control of Riyadh, the traditional home of his ancestors. This ultimately led to the creation of the Kingdom.

It was customary of King Abdul Aziz to proudly say: “I’m the brother of Noura.” (Mentioning any female family member’s name in public is still seen as shameful to many Saudis.)

The same sources say that she was a poet and known to be broad minded, citing her for being behind the introduction of the telephone in the country, despite some religious fanatics calling it a tool of the devil. Princess Noura passed away in 1950.

Some reports describe this $5-billion project as one of the most advanced higher education institutions in the world in terms of construction, equipment and operation.

According to Princess Al-Jawhara bint Fahd, the first female university rector in the Kingdom and the first colleges in Princess Noura’s name were founded in 1970.

Since then, almost 60,000 students have graduated from the colleges that were incorporated in 2007 and serve the country in different capacities, contributing to its social and economical development.

Princess Al-Jawhara views the new campus as a catalyst to help the university evolve into a giant center for excellence and leadership specializing in many fields locally, regionally and internationally.

These fields include higher education, scientific research, community service, environmental development and building a knowledge-based society, all within the framework of Islamic, cultural and societal values.

Currently, the university has 13 colleges based in temporary premises in Riyadh, accommodating 26,000 students.

These colleges offer study programs in 55 subjects, bachelor’s degree courses in 38 subjects and master’s and doctorate degrees in around 40 subjects.

The completed campus will be able to accommodate over 40,000 thousand students and offer housing to around 20,000 from all over the Kingdom.

It will offer additional courses in subjects, including medicine, pharmacy, management, computer sciences and languages.

In its 8 million square meter grounds, the campus will have buildings for university administration, 15 colleges, a central library, conference centers, several laboratories and a 700-bed hospital, all equipped with state-of-the-art facilities.

There will also be centers for nanotechnology, biosciences and information technology that will operate in coordination with the King Abdul Aziz City for Science and Technology.

The campus will also include housing for university staff and students, mosques, a school, kindergarten and amusement centers.

All these facilities will be served by a high-tech transport system with automatic and computer-controlled vehicles acting as a link to all important facilities at the campus around the clock.

The environment has also been given due consideration.

The campus claims to be a green one and features energy-saving technology. The 40,000 square meters of solar paneling will provide 16 percent of power for campus heating and 18 percent for air-conditioning.

Also, the campus will have a water recycling plant capable of producing 8,000 cubic meters of water every day for green areas in the university.

Furthermore, its buildings have been designed to incorporate sunlight as a natural source of light.

Observers expect this new university to be a key center for inducting new generations of women in the Kingdom into an era of globalization, albeit in accordance with the teachings of Islam and Saudi Arabian traditions.

Furthermore, they view it as a precedent to opening more universities for women all over the Kingdom, gradually replacing existing women sections at male-run universities, especially as statistics indicate that girls make up two-thirds of the 600,000 students in higher education in the country.

Princess Noura University to go green

By MD RASOOLDEEN | ARAB NEWS

Published: Jul 15, 2010 00:16 Updated: Jul 15, 2010 00:16

RIYADH: The world’s largest women-only university is undergoing a transformation to become the first green campus in Saudi Arabia.

The Riyadh-based Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University, which covers eight million square meters, will soon implement a new intelligent building control system and is also aiming to substantially cut its energy usage.

The leading power and automation technology group, ABB, won an order from Saudi Oger to implement its KNX system in all buildings at the campus, located near King Khaled International Airport.

ABB’s technology will allow university facility managers to automatically and remotely control lighting and shading through one single interface, enabling significant reductions in energy usage.

KNX is a global standard for home and building automation control, designed to increase comfort and energy efficiency.

“ABB is proud to be a part of the new campus for the Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University project, which will be one of the largest universities in the Middle East,” said Ali Nazzal, a senior sales and operations manager for ABB.

Buildings that have implemented the ABB system have reported energy savings of up to 40 percent.

“As the first green building campus in Saudi Arabia, we believe that Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University will further the drive for significant cost savings and a lower carbon footprint in the Kingdom’s construction sector and become a benchmark for other universities looking to establish green campuses of their own,” Nazzal added.

Once completed, the university campus will have approximately three million square meters of built-up area.

The campus will include an administration building, a central library, conference centers, 15 academic faculty buildings, several laboratories, as well as a state-of-the-art 700-bed hospital.

Saudi Oger is one of the main contractors for the university, which aims to be one of the leading women educational institutions in the region.

Saudi Oger and ABB worked closely to provide a solution that would significantly reduce energy consumption. “We’ve witnessed increasing demand for smart building solutions in Saudi Arabia, not only because of increased energy savings but also due to a desire for technology that automates basic functions such as lighting and shading,” said Adel Jaber, low voltage products business unit manager for ABB Saudi Arabia.

“As electricity consumption increases by eight percent a year there’s a need for such technology that will enable Saudi Arabia to become a more energy-efficient country.”

Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University, the world’s largest female-only university which is scheduled to be completed early 2012, is also set to be Saudi Arabia’s first “green campus” as the university responds to increased electricity consumption in the Kingdom.

The campus, located in north Riyadh near King Khaled International Airport Road over an area of eight million sq. meters, will house a range of smart buildings with ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, having been recruited to provide its KNX intelligent building control system.

The system is described as “a global standard for home and building automation control, designed to increase comfort and energy efficiency”.

“We’ve witnessed increasing demand for smart building solutions in Saudi Arabia, not only because of increased energy savings but also due to a desire for technology that automates basic functions such as lighting and shading,” said Adel Jaber, ABB Saudi Arabia’s low-voltage products business unit manager.

“There has been an annual 40 percent increase in the consumption of electricity here and the introduction of energy-saving technology will make the country more energy efficient.”

The university campus will contain administration buildings, 13 faculties, a 700-bed student hospital, laborataries, research centers, and a residential area with accommodation for staff and a projected 26,000 students. – Saudi Gazette

Giant Noura campus to be ready by end of next year
( Published On Friday 15 October 2010, 8 Dhu Alqadah 1431, Time: 13:2)

http://img299.imageshack.us/img299/676/image002iq.jpg (http://img299.imageshack.us/i/image002iq.jpg/)

The construction of the world’s largest women-only university campus is nearing completion, according to its top official.

Princess Al-Jawhara bint Fahd, president of Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University of Riyadh, said the giant campus would be ready by the end of next year.

The project was actually meant to finish this year but the deadline was later pushed back by another year.

Princess Al-Jawhara disclosed that the university has achieved 100 percent Saudization in all its administrative departments.

Speaking to Al-Madinah Arabic daily, Princess Al-Jawhara said the university campus, which boasts the first green campus in the Kingdom, will have several unique features as a world-class center of academic excellence and scientific research. It is part of the government’s serious drive to realize the empowerment of Saudi women.

According to the president, the campus will also have the state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities. “These include a high-tech transport system with automatic and computer-controlled vehicles that will act as a link to all important facilities at the campus around the clock. The main highlight of the transport system will be a suspended train service that will facilitate the smooth flow of traffic inside the campus. There will be suspension railway stations connecting various parts of the campus with a suspension monorail operating around the clock,” she said, adding that all the infrastructure projects of the campus have already been completed.

Taking advantage of the energy-saving technology, the campus buildings have been designed in a way incorporating sunlight as a natural source of light. The 40,000 square meters of solar paneling will provide 16 percent of power for campus heating and 18 percent for air-conditioning.

Princess Al-Jawhara stated that the gigantic campus project, which is a key center for inducting new generations of Saudi women into an era of globalization, is expected to cost more than SR22 billion. Located on King Khaled International Airport Road, north of Riyadh, the campus spreads over a total area of eight million square meters, of which the total built-up area is around three million square meters. There are about 40,000 women students at the university at present, and that number matches the total capacity of the new campus. More than 60 percent of the students are graduates of Saudi secondary schools.

While describing the university as a milestone in the Kingdom’s history, particularly in the history of women’s education, Princess Al-Jawhara unveiled plans to set up an Arabic language institute for non-Arabic speaking students at the campus.

The campus would include administration buildings, 13 faculties, a 700-bed student hospital equipped with advanced facilities, laboratories, research centers and a residential area that includes accommodation for students as well as for academic and non-academic staff.

Princess Al-Jawhara denied reports that the mosque, which is under construction at the campus, is meant only for women. “The mosque is being built at a location with easy access to all faculty members. There are two separate sections of accommodation for girls and families of the university staff,” she said while adding that there would also be separate sports and recreational facilities and health clubs for men and women.

According to Princess Al-Jawhara, there are 972 male and female academic staff at present at the university and the number of faculty members is going up day by day. The university is expecting more students from various parts of the Kingdom and abroad, she said.

Referring to the commercial market and restaurant projects at the university, Princess Al-Jawhara said the Ministry of Finance has been entrusted with the task of awarding these projects and other supporting services to the concerned parties.

Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the campus on Oct. 28, 2008. During the ceremony, the king changed its name from Riyadh University for Women to Princess Noura bint Abdulrahman University to honor his aunt Princess Noura, who was the sister of King Abdul Aziz. – Arab News

that's what I really wonder ... there is (near to exit 9) around 1 square km
of new buildings and U/C building and work to build new ones is still going on

I doubt that it's going to be held by any other university or institute after
PNU coz they will have left a huge gate with their name on it ... I believe
it's a miscommunication between they the people in charge with the newer
university and people running the current one

Metro Riyadh

Princess Noura University for Women: Automated People Mover
The first driverless metro in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

In the North of the Saudi Capital Riyadh, a huge site is under construction in order to host the biggest University in the world in one single site.
Starting in May 2009, the PNU-APM Project has a challenging target of opening in May 2011, only 24 months for the Design, the Construction and the Test & Commissioning of a complex system such as the Driverless Metro.

The PNU-APM is a 12 km of high technology transportation serving the whole campus of the university and enabling the students to access easily to each part of the campus (Faculties, housing, recreation centres …). The line is completely on a viaduct and has 14 stations and is characterized by a central loop of 6 km.

The main challenge is the implementation of a driverless system in a very difficult climate such as the desert and also customize a dedicated Transportation System serving a well defined category of users (University Students).

The PNU-APM main characteristics:

The Metro lines cover a total of 12 km.
14 stations – all on a viaduct.
22 trains in total. Each train is 29 m long and 2.65 m wide
Each train carries up to 360 passengers – and has room for wheelchairs, prams and bicycles
Maximum speed: 70 km/h. Average speed including stops: 30 km/h
Round Trip: between 20 and 35 mn.
Minimum Operational Headway 90 seconds
Driverless
Safety built-in: open passage and visibility all through the train, and electronic contact points at each door and on platforms to get direct contact with control room

The Ansaldo STS supply for the PNU-APM includes:

All sub-systems:

Rolling stocks: two cars vehicles.
Control and Maintenance Centre with service vehicles and equipment
Signalling System: Automatic Train Control (ATC)
SCADA (Supervision, Control, and Data Acquisition)
CCTV System in the Depot Area.
Radio, Communication, PSIS (Passenger Safety and Information System)
Power supply and Traction power / Third Rail
Platform Screen Doors

Services and implementation process:

System design
System and sub-system integration
System Construction
System level testing
Safety assessment
Operation and Maintenance for 3 years

hello guys ...

today afternoon I went to PSU to get some photos. I was truly happy
with what I found. infinite number of nice-looking building including
colleges and other halls ... each building is connected to the other
by metro lines, transportation there is great. I don't think that any
one there would need a car to get from one building to another, the
metro is literally connecting each building to the other with metro
stations as you'll see ... the campus looks like 5-star hotel with no
less than 25-residential buildings, 6 stories each ... all in all, the least
I can say is that it's another kaust in riyadh

I'm leaving you with the pics ...

the campus is fabulous, and decent designs indeed, did you asked them any of this questions
*if females can drive inside?
*in specific occasions male can get a pass ex: maintenance, operation, instructor...etc
*train's construction finish date+ how many trailers?
*what gonna happen to the old Norah campus?

thanks a billions :)

well ... I was willing to ask the some questions, but the problem is
that I couldn't have any attention. everyone seemed to be busy

arabic well and I couldn't find a supervisor to talk to

Answers for the first two questions are kind of obvious.
They wouldn't build an entire metro system that connects each building to the other if women were allowed to drive there. As to the second one, do we have women who can fill these positions? Obviously not, unless they'll be importing women for these jobs which is highly unlikely.

Construction of the world’s largest women-only university, located in Saudi Arabia, is on track to complete next year according to the project’s most senior official.

The 800 hectare Princess Noura Bint Abdulrahman University of Riyadh, which was previously delayed by a year, will be ready by the end of 2011 according to its president Princess Al-Jawhara bint Fahd.

On completion, the university campus will have 300 hectares of built-up area, including an administration building, a central library, conference centers, 15 academic faculty buildings, several laboratories, as well as a 700-bed hospital.

The princess confirmed that the university has already successfully hired all Saudi nationals in its administrative departments.

In an interview with Al-Madinah Arabic daily, Princess Al-Jawhara said the university campus would have several unique features and state-of-the-art infrastructure facilities, which have already been constructed.

“These [transport systems] include a high-tech transport system with automatic and computer-controlled vehicles that will act as a link to all important facilities at the campus,” she said.

“The main highlight of the transport system will be a suspended train service that will facilitate the smooth flow of traffic inside the campus. There will be suspension railway stations connecting various parts of the campus with a suspension monorail operating around the clock.”

Due to become the second green university campus in the Kingdom after the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, which achieved a LEED platinum rating earlier this year, the project is being developed with a view to minimizing energy usage.

Power and automation technology group ABB is currently working closely with main contractor Saudi Oger to implement an intelligent building control system and aiming to slash the building’s energy usage.

If successful, the university will be the second LEED-rated campus in Saudi Arabia as well as a leading women educational institution in the region.

Saturday, 14 May 2011 - 11 Jumada Al-Akhir 1432 H

RIYADH: King Abdullah, Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, will open Sunday (May 15) the new university city of Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman, the first exclusive university campus for women.

The university is designed for an intake of over 50,000 women students and the campus, for which the foundation stone was laid on the outskirts of Riyadh in 2009, boasts residences for 12,000 women students, 22 academic colleges and six medical colleges, and a 700-bed university hospital, along with two sports clubs, a conference center, commercial centers, and primary, intermediate and secondary schools for boys and girls.

Notable features of the campus design are its 19-kilometer train to transport students between faculties and other buildings, an “intelligent library” fully-accessible to students electronically, and rain channels and tunnels guarding against the threat of flooding.

Staff and students at the university voiced their hope and pride as they prepare to move to the new facilities.

Najla’ Al-Mubarak, lecturer at the Faculty of Literature, described the move as an “honor and responsibility”.

“We promise the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques that we will be up to that responsibility,” she said. “He will see successive renaissances in the education of Saudi women and in all other fields as well. The success of the university is a success for Saudi women.”

Sara Al-Khushami, lecturer at the Social Planning Department, said it was an “historic event for universities in the Kingdom”.

“It’s a massive step forward for Saudi women’s education and an advancement from the local to the international level,” she said. “It’s something of which we should all be proud and which has had the personal interest of the Custodian of the two Holy Mosques.”

One student described the university as “a turning point in the education process”.

“The university is an example of one of the finest universities in the world, and will give us the opportunity for an education in conditions conducive to study and learning,” she said.

^^ Sunday is two days away here. :D

Roukaya, you're a dude?A dude? what's a dude?

Definition: A dude is an individual, typically male, particularly somebody well dressed or who has never lived outside a big city. The female equivalent, which is used less often, is "dudette" or "dudess". However, "dude" has evolved to become more unisex to encompass all genders,[3] and this was true even in the 1950s.[4]

The word dude is an American English slang term generally used informally to address or refer to somebody and was once used primarily by adults but this has become a common slang term used in various age groups.

....So NO I'm not a dude! ...I had lived for a long time on a prairie

I'm a girl, I should have an invitation for the opening :)

King set to open Saudi Arabia's university for women

http://www.arabianbusiness.com/incoming/article361800.ece/ALTERNATES/g3l/HRH+Saudi+King+Abdullah+Bin+Abdul+Aziz+Al+Saud.jpg
King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia will open the kingdom's university for women on Sunday.

Saturday, 14 May 2011

King Abdullah will on Sunday officially open the new SR20bn university city of Princess Noura Bint Abdul Rahman, the first exclusive campus for women.

The university in Riyadh is set for an intake of more than 50,000 women students and the campus has residences for 12,000 women students, 22 academic colleges and six medical colleges.

There is also a 700-bed university hospital, along with two sports clubs, a conference centre, commercial centres, and primary, intermediate and secondary schools for boys and girls, state news agency SPA reported on Saturday.

The campus also has its own 19km train to transport students between facilities and rain channels and tunnels guarding against the threat of flooding.

Dr Huda Al-Ameel, the university's president, said facilities also included a research zone for King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology along with three research centres specialising in nano technology, information technology and biological sciences.

She added that the residential area included housing units for families of employees, accommodation for female students, two mosques and recreational facilities.

Back in 2008, Saudi Arabia launched a $3.1bn shake-up of its education system, designed to lift standards in the kingdom.

The move followed a report by the World Economic Forum on the competitiveness of world economies, in which education was singled out as an area for Saudi Arabia to develop.

JEDDAH: The SR20-billion new campus of Princess Nora bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) along Airport Road in Riyadh will boost women's higher education in the Kingdom, said Huda Al-Ameel, the newly appointed PNU president.

"The new campus, covering eight million square meters, is considered the largest women-only university in the world," said Al-Ameel. Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah will open the campus on Sunday in the presence of senior royal family members, ministers and foreign diplomats.

Al-Ameel said the huge campus was completed in a record time of less than three years on the instructions of King Abdullah. "We are grateful to King Abdullah for this vital project, which will surely encourage PNU staff and students to exploit this state-of-the art facility to excel in education,” she said.

Apart from administrative buildings, the new campus includes a 700-bed university hospital, 15 colleges, a central library, a conference hall, laboratories and three research centers for nanotechnology, information technology and biosciences. It also comprises staff housing units, student hostels, primary, intermediate and secondary schools and recreational facilities.

King Abdullah laid the foundation stone for the university in October 2008. Designed to accommodate more than 50,000 students, PNU has been described as a milestone in the history of women's education in the Kingdom. The university has a high-tech transport system with automatic and computer-controlled vehicles linking all important facilities on the campus.

Munira Al-Abdan, vice president for studies and development, highlighted PNU’s efforts to improve the standard of its graduates in terms of academic qualification and skills. “We have designed our academic programs to meet job market requirements,” she said.

“We provide our graduates with additional training courses to strengthen their competitive capabilities in the job market,” she added. PNU has taken measures to achieve continuous improvement in the quality of education. “We also want to make PNU a paperless university by completing all internal activities electronically,” Al-Abdan said.

About the university’s social responsibility, Al-Abdan said PNU has been providing consultancy services to ministries and public and private organizations on various social issues. “We conduct studies on social issues to find viable solutions.” PNU also conducts a career day with the participation of leading companies in order to find employment opportunities for its graduates.

Firdous Al-Saleh, vice president for higher studies and scientific studies, said the university’s library has six million titles including important reference books. “King Abdullah has been closely following the campus project work,” said Walid Al-Mehwas, another vice president.

At present there are more than 28,000 students and about 3,000 staff members. There are colleges for medicine, dentistry, nursing, information technology, kindergarten education, languages, instant translation and pharmacy. It has 32 affiliated colleges in 17 cities and townships in the Riyadh province.

Figures released by UNESCO show that women make up 58 percent of the total student population of Saudi universities.

King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia inaugurating Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) on the outskirts of the capital, Riyadh.

Sunday, 15 May 2011

King Abdullah Bin Abdul-Aziz of Saudi Arabia opened on Sunday the largest women’s university campus in the world in a major move to boost women’s higher education in the Kingdom.

The SAR20 billion ($5.3-billion) new campus of Princess Nora Bint Abdulrahman University (PNU) on the outskirts of the capital, Riyadh, was inaugurated in the presence of senior royal family members, ministers and foreign diplomats.

The university campus, spreading over eight million square meters (26 million feet), will host up to 50,000 students in its 15 departments.

It is also planned to be a car-free environment, operating a shuttle monorail train and electric buggies for internal transport, while solar panels stretched on the campus will reportedly generate 18 percent of the power needed for air-conditioning.

The campus also boasts a 700-bed hospital and accommodation facilities that could lodge 12,000 students.

“The new campus is considered the largest women-only university in the world,” Huda Al-Ameel, the newly appointed PNU president said, according to Arab News.

Ms. Al-Ameel said the huge campus was completed in a record time of less than three years on the instructions of King Abdullah.

“We are grateful to King Abdullah for this vital project, which will surely encourage PNU staff and students to exploit this state-of-the art facility to excel in education,” she said.

Munira Al-Abdan, vice president for studies and development, said PNU seeks to provide high quality academic education and skills for its students. “We have designed our academic programs to meet job market requirements,” she said.

“We provide our graduates with additional training courses to strengthen their competitive capabilities in the job market,” Ms. Abdan added.

She also said the university will be environment-friendly by promoting a paperless work policy and carrying out all its internal activities electronically.

The university’s library has about six million titles including reference books.

Women make up 58 percent of the total student population of 130,000 at seven universities in Saudi Arabia, according to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). The Saudi government devotes nearly 30 percent of its annual budget, or $40 billion, to education.

never. as long as the rest of the population isn't doing anything about them and the government is so complacent in dealing with them. we're doomed to exist with these retards forever. i suggest building a wall or something if we ever want out..

anyway, this isn't a political/rants thread. i'll stop here.
