View Full Version : Fall in love with Tulsa

Hey folks, this is my first time posting to this forum and I though Tulsa could use a little more love. Anyway, I took these pictures this past weekend. The first few are from a couple of different parking garages at St. John Hospital. The next few are from around Utica Square, which is right across the street from St. John in Midtown Tulsa. I also took some from around the 61st and Yale area in south Tulsa, which is where SemGroup is headquartered and where Citgo used to be headquartered. Finally there are some from Calvary Cemetery in south Tulsa and one of Turkey Mountain, which is an urban wilderness area that is crisscrossed by natural hiking/biking trails.

Hope you all enjoy!

Looks like a beautiful city, I'd never thought it would look like that. The trees in Atlanta looks a bit like that right now, only more colorful...

That's the CityPlex tower, corner of Lewis & 81st Street. The tallest tower is equal in height to Noah's Arc. 2nd tallest in the state (fixing to be 4th).

I already said this over on my forums, but GREAT pics Enthusiast.

You should definitely pay Oklahoma a visit. I have read several times where people have compared OKC to Ft. Worth. Not sure what city to compare Tulsa with. I personally find that both OKC and Tulsa have very distinctive looks and vibes. I could never confuse the two for one another.

It's just so funny... Every time a photo thread comes from Oklahoma, we get "I've never imagined.." "I had no idea.." "That's not what I thought.."

I think it's hard to realize exactly how far the flat and dusty "Indian Territory" stereotypes have permeated everyone's thoughts. Working in tourism in DT OKC, I get to hear people saying these kind of comments all day long, and it's the same even on here where everyone's fairly knowledgeable city enthusiasts.

Someday everyone will know... One photo thread at a time... haha

Great pics! Tulsa and OKC both look like nice cities with strong urban characters, respectively. So why on earth did they both vote so heavily in favor of McCain??? Tulsa County went for McCain 62-38. Oklahoma County went 58-42. In fact, every dang county in OK went for McCain. Oklahoma seems to be the only state in the Union moving further to the right. What's going on over there? Is it the influence of oil wealth? The overwhelmingly white population? The large numbers of self-righteous evangelical Christians? Just curious...

Thanks for posting! One of these days I'll get in my car, and head out there. It's a long drive from Georgia, but I'm sure it'll be a nice one, and I can visit friends in Memphis on the way.

Do the Cityplex towers still have a religious use? If not, they'd make an interesting hotel/condo development!

As for OK and McCain, most of the South (except FL, NC and VA) were firmly in McCain's camp. No surprise there.

Who cares why we voted McCain? We're conservative and have been for sometime. I don't see any problem with it, don't like it then move, that's what I got to say about that.

And I'm not sure what the Cityplex towers are used for now.. I heard medical uses, don't know how but like I said I'm not sure.

The CityPlex towers used to be the City of Faith Hospital, which went bankrupt under Oral Roberts lol.. then they became CityPlex, filled up with medical offices..now I think it's barely half-full because the doctors keep moving in to the new towers that keep being built off Yale.

Well, Oklahoma is just a very different kind of state. I would say that the influence of oil wealth has a lot to do with it, but a lot of it has to do with the Southern lifestyle. As for the counties, mostly has to do with breakdown. OKC's inner city is entirely within Oklahoma County, while part of Tulsa's inner city spills into Osage County. Tulsa County actually includes a long cross-section of some of the suburbs, more than Oklahoma County..most of OKC's suburbs are in Cleveland County, Canadian County, and a little bit into Logan County these days..

I really just have 2 things to say about how "Oklahoma looks like a nice state but went so lopsided for McCain": first of all, McCain is more of an independent than a Republican and Oklahoma is one of the states he won on Super Tuesday that cemented his campaign over the hard-liners like Romney and Huckabee. Second of all, voting for McCain over Obama doesn't make someone ign'ant..in fact there were a LOT of decent, intelligent people that voted for McCain. In fact Obama never even paid Oklahoma a single visit, so it's not like Oklahoma should have gone for Obama.

I really just have trouble comprehending the idea that a nice city should vote Democrat... Haha. We can have conservative but urban cities. Don't try to put things into boxes, particularly when dealing with Oklahoma. We're wackos.

Also remember that while the rest of the country was struggling with economic issues during the Bush years, we have been thriving. So we don't see a problem with continuing a Republican economic regime- it has worked really well for us.

I completely agree. OKC is becoming more diverse, urbanism and the like is popping up all over the city, but it's still somewhat conservative. Heck the mayor is to the right himself. I find nothing wrong with that but of course I'm going to say that being conservative, but still that's beyond the point. You can be a good, big city and not be liberal. OKC proves that.

And actually, you'll find mountains in SE and over parts of Western Oklahoma. Tulsa just has hills.

"Turkey Mountain" isn't even one of the 5 biggest hills in the Tulsa region, it just happens to be the one located right across the Arkansas River from Midtown. And besides here's a better pic of it from this thread:

I am glad you all like the photos and that they are shattering many of your misconceptions about Oklahoma.

In terms of politics, Oklahoma is quite a quandary. We pretty much always vote for a Republican president, but the majority of registered voters in the state are Democrats. In fact, 2004 was the first time in 40 years that Republicans took control of our State House of Representatives. This election marks the first time in our State's history that the State Senate will be controlled by Republicans. So, we've had decades of Democrat control, and we're still a relatively poor and "backward" place compared to many more progressive places, except for our urban areas, they tend to be much more progressive (there is a big difference between urban Oklahoma and rural Oklahoma). Granted Democrats here are quite conservative, but I guess people here are disenchanted with the Democrat mantra. But who knows really.

Pretty much. The urban areas, OKC in particular, are paving the way for new things to come. It's much more of a progressive city compared to Tulsa imo. Another funny thing is that Tulsa's past few mayors have been Democrats and our state governor is a Democrat but yet as Enthusiast said we vote Republican when it comes to the president and such. So yea.. But anyway this is a picture thread so enough about politics.
