JediAlf November 11th, 2008, 01:29 PM Building of Jurong General Hospital brought forward as construction prices fall
By Pearl Forss, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 11 November 2008 1721 hrs
SINGAPORE : Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan said construction plans for the new Jurong General Hospital have been brought forward to take advantage of softening construction costs.
In July, the government has said it is deferring another S$1.7 billion of public sector construction projects to ease pressure on the then red-hot construction sector.
More hospital bed spaces are coming on-stream and drugs could get cheaper, thanks to the economic crisis.
Private healthcare operator ParkwayHealth is building a 350-room hospital which will be ready by 2011.
The hospital will specialise in four main clinical areas - musculoskeletal, heart and vascular, oncology and general surgery.
ParkwayHealth has seen a 5-7 per cent drop in medical tourists in recent months due to the financial crisis. It expects the fall to taper off at 10 per cent.
But it is confident that in the long run, patients from the Middle East, Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and the Asian region will continue to seek treatment in Singapore.
The national aim is to treat one million foreign patients a year by 2012.
ParkwayHealth said the drop in medical tourists from Indonesia in recent months has been most pronounced. But more patients are coming from Vietnam and Bangladesh.
"This is about the best time to build a hospital whereby we have more time, and our hands are not so tied with operational problems, so we can pay more attention to the construction," said Dr Lim Cheok Peng, managing director of Parkway Holdings Ltd.
Construction costs in Singapore have been falling due to a slowing economy, and this is good news for ParkwayHealth's new hospital at Novena which is estimated to cost between S$300 million and S$500 million.
The health minister also said he will bring forward the construction of the public hospital in Jurong to take advantage of falling construction costs.
Jurong General Hospital was originally slated for completion in 2015, but it's likely to be earlier now.
Minister Khaw added that another key reason is that hospitals are operating near capacity.
"We have been enjoying a very steady growth - almost 20 per cent per annum compound rate of foreign patients. But last year, compared to 2006, it was quite flat. I don't think it is because demand has shrunk or we are losing competitiveness, but capacity is constrained. When I visit friends who go to private hospitals, I look at the ward.... (it's) just like public hospitals," said Khaw.
To address the shortage of hospital beds, Singapore HealthPartners, a partnership formed by local doctors, is also building a "mediplex", which consists of a hospital, hotel and specialist medical centre, in Little India.
But it's not just a shortage of beds, there's also a shortage of doctors.
Over 600 doctors graduated in Singapore in the last three years, while over 1,000 foreign medical graduates were recruited over the same time.
And there is still a need of more doctors to service new citizens and foreign patients. Recruitment is not expected to slow down with the recession, and no pay cuts are expected for public sector nurses and doctors.
Mr Khaw said it is important to pay them the market rate, otherwise the industry may lose 300 specialists by the time the new hospital opens.
Another advantage that the slowing economy is the possibility of cheaper drugs for patients, as the steep increase in drug prices in the last two years were partly due to high oil prices. - CNA /ls

Jurong General Hospital to be located near MRT, bus interchange

Jurong General Hospital to be located near MRT, bus interchange
SINGAPORE: The new general hospital in Jurong will be located in Jurong East, within walking distance from the Jurong East MRT station and bus interchange, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan announced after a ministerial walkabout in Geylang Serai on Sunday.
The hospital, which is expected to open by 2015, will also be easily accessible via the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE) and the Pan-Island Expressway (PIE).
The Jurong General Hospital will have 550 beds and will provide acute inpatient and outpatient care. It will also have a community hospital next to it.
Mr Khaw said this co-location arrangement follows the Changi General Hospital and the St Andrew's Community Hospital model, which has worked well.
He said: "As a rule, we try to learn from all past projects so that every new hospital is better than the previous one. This co-location with community hospital is something we find very useful. The main advantage is integration.
"Patients sometimes do develop complications and if (the hospitals) are physically linked, you could just push the patients over... Sometimes, you do not need to push a patient over, the doctor can pop over. This is the sort of integration with a stepdown care sector which I want, which we are focusing on over the next few years."
A hospital planning committee, led by National Healthcare Group CEO Lim Suet Wun, is looking into the details. The Health Ministry said it would wait for a "good time" – when construction costs have cooled down – to call for tenders for the hospital.
This development will form part of the larger Jurong Lake District plan to transform the Jurong East area into a mini-city with commercial, leisure and other amenities.
The Health Ministry has also reserved a few sites for more hospitals if there is a need for them.
Details of the Jurong Lake District plan are available at www.ura.gov.sg/MP2008/Jurong/.

IT MAY be two years before it opens its doors, but the upcoming Khoo Teck Puat Hospital will start filling up more than a thousand positions from Thursday.
It is looking to hire both medical and non-medical staff, from brain surgeons to accountants and cooks, at its first job fair on Thursday.
Other positions on offer include that of occupational therapists, medical social workers, porters and operations executives. Named after late hotel tycoon Khoo Teck Puat, the general hospital in Yishun is scheduled to be ready in 2010 and have 550 beds.
'An early head start will allow ample time for those who are not experienced in healthcare to get the necessary training,' said Mr Liak Teng Lit, chief executive officer at Alexandra Hospital, who will run the new hospital.
Most of Alexandra Hospital's staff will move to the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital when it is ready. A new team will take over at Alexandra Hospital.
Some of the jobs, for radiographers and pharmacists for instance, are for immediate vacancies at Alexandra Hospital. They will move to the new hospital in Yishun later.
The job fair will be held alongside a commemoration ceremony for Phase Two of the new hospital's construction, which will be attended by Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan.
The master plan for the development for the adjacent Yishun Pond will also be unveiled at the ceremony on Thursday afternoon.

SINGAPORE: The Jurong General Hospital (JGH) will be completed by 2014, a year earlier than expected, and its chief executive-designate Foo Hee Jug expects to care for patients beyond the confines of the hospital.
Mr Foo, a public healthcare veteran who is currently chief operating officer (COO) of Singapore General Hospital and group COO and group chief procurement officer of SingHealth, will assume his new role on June 1, it was announced on Wednesday.
The 700-bed JGH will work closely with the new 200-bed community hospital to be sited next to it. Both are a walking distance from the Jurong East bus and train interchanges.
“We will work closely with the new community hospital and other primary care clinics in our area, so that we can provide patients with holistic care beyond the hospital into the community,” Mr Foo, 42, said.
“In designing the hospital’s services and process, patients’ needs are our main focus and everything should be hassle-free for them,” he said, adding that it would cater to residents’ health and fitness needs.
The hospital’s design specifications and the appointment of various consultants are being finalised.
Mr Foo has a Bachelor of Science degree from the National University of Singapore, as well as Masters degrees in Business Administration and Public Health (Health Services Management) from the Anderson School at University of California, Los Angeles.
He has 15 years’ experience in healthcare and his roles include overseeing infrastructure development and emergency planning operations integration at SGH and the four national specialty centres at Outram.
Besides Mr Foo’s appointment, Cheah Wei Keat was also appointed chairman-designate of JGH’s medical board. Associate Professor Cheah is currently division head of general surgery at the National University Hospital.
The JGH will work closely with the Health Ministry and restructured hospitals to recruit, train and develop new staff.
“I envision building an environment where all staff are empowered to excel in their work and deliver effective care to patients, as well as given plenty of room to grow through comprehensive training,” said Mr Foo.
Hiring will be ramped up in the coming months for a seamless transition of management at Alexandra Hospital in mid-2010, said the Health Ministry.
Alexandra Hospital will remain open until the JGH is ready.

Khoo Teck Puat hospital started construction since 2007, delayed by few months due to Indonesian ban on sands. So much machinery and workers were brought in to compensate the loss of construction time.

Addendum to President's address
Hiring for Jurong hospital
By Salma Khalik , HEALTH CORRESPONDENT
JURONG General Hospital (JGH) will start recruiting even before construction for the proposed 700-bed hospital starts.
Over the next five years, its doctors, nurses and other workers will bond into a new team at the current Alexandra Hospital (AH).
Most of the 1,800-strong team now at AH will be moving to the new Khoo Tech Puat Hospital in Yishun, scheduled to open in phases from March 2010 with its specialist outpatient clinics.
The move will be completed by the time the entire 550-bed hospital is opened by September next year.
It will also need to recruit more staff, especially for junior positions, since the Yishun hospital is bigger.
JGH's newly-named chief executive officer, Mr Foo Hee Jug, currently chief operating officer at Singapore General Hospital, will move to AH in June. He will immediately start recruiting staff to take over positions vacated by the move to KTPH.
Mr Foo is expected to take over the running of the 350-bed Alexandra Hospital towards the end of next year. He will build up his team in preparation for his new hospital in Jurong East Region Centre, scheduled to open in 2014 - a year earlier than originally planned.
The exact location of the hospital has yet to be released, but it will be within walking distance of both MRT and the bus interchange.
Mr Foo has been in public health for the past 15 years, first at Toa Payoh Hospital, then Changi General before moving to SGH.
Mr Foo, who holds both a Masters degree in business administration and one in public health, is also the COO and chief procurement officer for the Singhealth cluster.
He will be assisted by Associate Professor Cheah Wei Keat, who has been appointed chairman of medical board for JGH. Prof Cheah is now head of general surgery at the National University Hospital.
In an Addendum to the President's Address in opening Parliament, Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan promised: 'We will facilitate integration of care services so that patients can be cared for at the most appropriate settings.'
So in keeping with the other regional hospitals, JGH will have a 200-bed community hospital just next door. The two hospitals will be designed for easy movement of patients between them.

lauper August 2nd, 2011, 04:00 PM CPG Consultants’ Design of Jurong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital in Singapore
Jurong General Hospital (JGH) and Jurong Community Hospital (JCH), the next large-scale public healthcare facilities, held their groundbreaking ceremony on the 9 November. The event was officiated by Minister of Health (MOH), Mr Khaw Boon Wan, who challenged the hospitals’ leadership to achieve a hassle-free healthcare service, where providers coordinate and integrate care for their patients in a seamless manner.
CPG Consultants, in collaboration with Studio 505 and HOK, is honoured to be the Architect, Civil & Structural Engineer and Traffic Engineer for the development after winning the design competition back in August 2009.
The 5.5-hectare development comprises 8 levels of specialist clinics, a 700-bed general hospital and a 286-bed community hospital, which will be located at Jurong East, near the MRT station. With an investment of over S$1-billion, JGH-JCH is slated to be the next generation of healthcare provider which introduces an integrated continuum of care from acute to step-down care.
CPG Consultants’ design concept for JGH, where “every patient has a window”, aims to lower the chances of cross infections and gives more space for hospital staff to conduct procedures and bedside care. The concept will also be extended to the Intensive Care Units and High Dependency Wards to promote healing for critically-ill patients. The wards have been designed to give flexibility for conversion between different classes of wards in future. Such design seeks to depart radically from the typical practice of hospital ward design and medical planning.
JCH will be integrated into the development of JGH and provide step down care in support for patients of JGH. In return, JCH will receive medical and general support services from JGH. This is also part of the MOH’s healthcare service plan to provide seamless, integrated and continual care as recovering in-patients are discharged from the general hospital and admitted into the community hospital for rehabilitative care.
The development will comprise a mobility and road safety park that will help in the rehabilitation of patients from the community hospital. There will also be a community wellness park, complete with jogging track for use by hospital staff and the community.
JGH is expected to open its specialist outpatient clinics in early 2014, followed by its inpatient wards later that year. JCH will open in early 2015.

Ng Teng Fong, Jurong hospitals unveil new features
By Vimita Mohandas | Posted: 08 September 2012 0952 hrs
SINGAPORE: The Ng Teng Fong General Hospital and Jurong Community Hospital have unveiled some new features that will help to improve processes and provide a conducive environment for patients as well as their caregivers.
The commemorative superstructure signing ceremony between Jurong Health Services (JurongHealth) and GS Engineering & Construction was officiated by Health Minister Gan Kim Yong on Saturday morning.
It signifies a joint commitment to build a seamless integrated healthcare hub.
The Ng Teng Fong General Hospital will see the first Intensive Care Medicine Department in Singapore which will streamline care by combining the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and High Dependency (HD) unit.
It will cut across different conventional ICUs such as surgical, medical, cardiac and neurosurgical.
The ICU will adopt a multi-professional team approach, involving critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, physiotherapists, critical care dietician and pharmacist.
This will allow flexibility between the ICU and HD units and will reduce the need for physical and care team transfers.
This means that intensive care patients whose condition have improved will be seamlessly managed as high dependency patients in the same room, cared for by the same team.
The hospital also prides itself with "a window for every patient" concept as it believes that access to natural lighting provides a conducive environment for patients' healing process.
Its Emergency Department is also designed for faster care, shorter waiting time and is scalable to accommodate an anticipated increase in patient load.
To prevent bottlenecks, it will have a central registration desk replaced with kiosks and greeters, bedside registrations and documentation.
Dr Quek Lit Sin, senior consultant and head of JurongHealth's Emergency Medicine Department, said: "Patients coming through the emergency department want to see a healthcare professional -- be it a nurse or a physician.
"We try to put these healthcare professionals right upfront, meaning they will attend to the patient as quickly as possible, not making them register, not making them wait for the next step in the whole consultation process, but actually address their problems right from the beginning and try to allocate resource as quickly as possible for these patients, meaning they will get treatment as soon as possible."
The Emergency Department is also designed to be trauma-ready to step up to any crisis involving mass casualty or hazardous materials incidents in nearby Jurong Island.
With Singapore's ageing population, the hospital will also have built in elder-friendly features such as handrails and large face clocks.
The community hospital will also have a purpose-built 3-room HDB flat mock-up rehabilitative zone so that the elderly can get the necessary skills to return to their daily activities upon discharge.

lauper September 19th, 2012, 04:35 PM Work has started at the centre spot of the site. This is where the future road will be. I wonder if they will build the road concurrently with the super structure of the hospital.
Mith252 September 20th, 2012, 12:19 AM ^^ It could be the case. It seems to be the case as they are trying to complete that portion first. :)
y2koh September 20th, 2012, 05:07 AM Building the road first will definitely help in the overall construction schedule, by providing additional worksite access.

lauper November 10th, 2012, 05:20 AM Nice to see the structure of the hospital coming up already. I just wonder - the model of the hospital shown during exhibitions looks big. It's just that the present construction site looks lean.
Mith252 November 10th, 2012, 12:49 PM ^^ Maybe it is the angle of the shot. The site pretty large. Anyway, it is still the foundation and basement phase. We'll see how it looks like once it has reached its first few floors. :)

I guess it will be covered by the middle of the year and a road will be build there. Also, the bridge that connects the 2 parts of the hospital was being build at the same time.

lauper March 2nd, 2013, 04:42 AM Ran past the construction site this morning. They have built the road that runs across the hospital but have not laid the tarmac yet. The partition is gone, replaced by road blocks.
Anyone free to capture a picture or pictures? Now I wonder if the road will be opened once the tarmac is laid.

It would likely be open when it is completed. :)
spikeshamz March 3rd, 2013, 02:23 PM Any idea if one day we would have the tallest public hospital in the world... Lets say, 40 storey tall... With a view for every patients..
y2koh March 4th, 2013, 05:53 AM Its all about practicality. Even hospitals from 8 to 12 storeys in height already have service cores twice the size of regular high rise office blocks due to the additional M&E requirements and additional lifts for beds and equipment. Going any further in height will result in a core that is so huge that you will probably fit only 20 beds per floor at no significant reduction in building footprint.
Mith252 March 13th, 2013, 01:19 AM News on the opening of more hospitals.

y2koh March 13th, 2013, 01:20 PM The Chinese newspaper mentioned in passing that the health ministry is considering more acute hospitals on the east and west side of Singapore. Considering that there are already 3 major acute hospitals in the southwest, I suspect that one of the hospitals will be located next to ITE West at the junction of Choa Chu Kang Rd and Brickland Rd. The location was labelled with 2 health and medical amenities in the recent BTO. A hospital here will also potentially serve Tengah New Town as it develops. As for the east side, I have no idea yet but Pasir Ris West seems to be a good candidate given that it can provide an alternative to Sengkang GH and serve both residents in the east and northeast, considering that there is already a lack of hospitals in the Northeast currently.
CHT March 13th, 2013, 03:32 PM Drove pass the site this afternoon, notice they are now installing something that looks like a connector bridge between the 2 hospitals.
deskoh91 March 13th, 2013, 05:46 PM Eventually all three buildings will be connected at basement 2 and at level 3 so you are probably looking at one of it now.

could be the one at level 3. reckon they need to get that structure up so that can start working on the road below.

deskoh91 March 14th, 2013, 02:11 PM Will be nice to have that bit of Jurong Gateway Road open. There will be improved connectivity to PIE and walking to IMM will be easier. The shuttle bus will also take a much shorter route.

Alexandra Hospital takes top spot for consumer satisfaction
Posted: 19 March 2013 1246 hrs
SINGAPORE: Alexandra Hospital has taken top spot for consumer satisfaction in the healthcare sector for restructured hospitals.
Alexandra Hospital jumped from last position out of seven hospitals in 2011 to first place in the Customer Satisfaction Index of Singapore 2012.
JurongHealth, which manages the hospital, emerged top in the same survey in the overall healthcare sector.
JurongHealth said its focus is not just on building infrastructure, but also on building an organisation with the right people with the right values.
This has helped to create an engaged workforce, with staff giving their best for the patients and their loved ones.
It paid special attention to feedback, through initiatives such as monthly surveys, patient feedback lunches, focus groups discussions, service excellence training and awards.
The public healthcare cluster was set up in June 2009 to look into the healthcare needs of the west.
Under its regional healthcare system are the Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, which will be ready by end-2014 and Jurong Community Hospital, which will be ready by mid-2015.

Ng Teng Fong, Jurong hospitals unveil new features

CEO of JurongHealth Foo Hee Jug said: "The first benefit we get is optimisation of resources. ICU are expensive assets within a hospital. When we put it under one single management and one single space, we can optimise it from a perspective of having the ICU under one managment through the Intensive Care Medicine Unit.
"We actually would be able to standardise care, have one point of contact for our patients and their caregiver and overall we think care is going to improve."
One challenge for the hospital would be manpower, as it needs some 4,000 healthcare workers.
Minister for Health Gan Kim Yong said: "For the immediate near term, we will still need to depend on foreign manpower to help supplement the local manpower.
"For doctors, for example, we are also reaching out to Singaporeans who are studying overseas and through our pre-employment grant, we want to attract more Singaporeans to come back to serve in Singapore."
"We will also look at how we can tap onto the resources of the various hospitals in Singapore. Today, for example, the National University Hospital is helping Ng Teng Fong to build up its manpwer needs," Mr Gan added.
"So we will go to many different avenues to try our best to recruit locals."
Mr Gan said his ministry will continue discussions with the Ministry of Manpower and various government agencies to see how MOH can have access to foreign manpower to meet its needs in the short term.

Yeah, I got it from the hospital's webpage, taken in Jan 2013.
deskoh91 March 20th, 2013, 04:31 PM I passed by the area where the road is briefly today. its full steam ahead on the bridge. think they will get that done to a safe structural completion level and open the road up before working on the rest of the hospital. the barriers are already half-removed.
when they said 2014 they are really talking about Dec 2014 lol. not surprising though considering they are really taking their time to build since they know themselves they need a lot more manpower compared to the comparatively tiny operations they are having right now at AH.
y2koh March 20th, 2013, 05:36 PM Considering that retrofitting and equipping a hospital takes a hell lot of time, Dec 2014 completion is possible. Full operation may only happen by 2Q2015 though.
deskoh91 March 21st, 2013, 06:40 AM I think they will start operating NTFGH by the end of next year, with the SOCs starting slightly earlier, and JCH will come onstream by mid 2015.
CHT March 21st, 2013, 07:18 AM Considering that retrofitting and equipping a hospital takes a hell lot of time, Dec 2014 completion is possible. Full operation may only happen by 2Q2015 though.
I think the toughest part could be setting up and testing the IT system and infrastructure.
Mith252 March 21st, 2013, 07:47 AM ^^ Nope it is the co-ordination between the various M&E services. It is a nightmare from the start to the end of construction.
y2koh March 21st, 2013, 10:24 AM For hospital projects, it goes beyond coordination of M&E service, you also have separation of M&E services, everything you have for a normal office building you have 2 to 3 times in a hospital: twice as many lifts, separate AHUs to provide ventilation to different areas, 3 times as many plumbing. And then you need additional piping and ducts for oxygen supply, special lighting and lighting controls, extra cabling for call systems, etc.
deskoh91 March 21st, 2013, 11:16 AM I think the toughest part could be setting up and testing the IT system and infrastructure.
the system is very much developed and in use in AH/JMC. in fact all public healthcare clusters use a similar system. they just have to upscale it.

What they will do and have been doing is to overstaff AH in preparation for the big move. In fact, right now they have more healthcare staff per patient than the other hospitals by sheer virtue of the fact that they have to scale up to a full sized hospital later. Why else do you think they have the best patient satisfaction? They have so many doctors and nurses that the waiting times are shorter. Of course the numbers they have now are still not enough to run at full capacity in NTFGH, so what will happen is that they will initially operate below capacity after the move and then slowly scale up as they recruit more people. It will be quite similar to how they launched KTPH. :)
Mith252 March 21st, 2013, 02:50 PM ^^ Ah, I see. Didn't really know that. Thanks for the great info. It definitely makes sense. :)
deskoh91 March 21st, 2013, 07:36 PM having visited them a few times in the past few weeks, their staffing level is typical to a public hospital, and it is already underutilized. the A&E is empty both times I was there, and there is only one to two persons ahead of me at the clinics.
from a 286 bedder to 1100 bedder, they probably have quite a few attachments (seconding JHS employees to other clusters until 2014) and delayed employment schemes (eg trainings and study sponsorships) in place since its not exactly swarming with employees the way I see it.
of course the real test of satisfaction will come in 2015, when they have the benefit of their custom-designed hardware while receiving what is likely to be among the highest patient loads among the public hospitals due to its location.

Partly true. Their catchment area is very small, hence very few patients are sent to their A&E or go there. However, the staffing level is not typical of a public hospital. If you've worked in another public hospital before, you'll realise that they are more overworked there.

NTFGH is a 700-bedder. The other 400 beds are in a community hospital, which is a separately-run entity and organisation, although they are twinned. The staffing for the community hospital will likely come from elsewhere.
of course the real test of satisfaction will come in 2015, when they have the benefit of their custom-designed hardware while receiving what is likely to be among the highest patient loads among the public hospitals due to its location.
I don't know how you came to that number, but it's definitely not true. I can tell you off-hand that NTFGH's patient load will not be higher than SGH, TTSH or CGH. If you've been to their emergency departments, you can tell that they are already operating at their limits. This is because they are servicing larger populations than NTFGH will, at least for the immediate future.
The catchment area of NTFGH is essentially a subset of the current NUH catchment area, which already gets (relatively) fewer patients than TTSH or SGH. NUH will definitely be relieved after NTFGH opens, but SGH, TTSH and CGH are still bursting at the seams. Remember that NTFGH's 700 beds may look a lot for now, but they are built with future capacity in mind as well.
Thus, NTFGH would be ranked 4th out of 7 in terms of patient load amongst public acute general hospitals at most. That doesn't count as "one of the highest patient loads".
y2koh March 23rd, 2013, 02:40 AM I beg to differ. Yes, NTFH does serve an area currently served by NUH, but do not forget that it will serve the northwest region as well, where residents had to go to either TTSH (via BKE/PIE), NUH (via Clementi Rd/Ave 6) or KTPH (via Mandai) previously. This region is rapidly growing as well, and rapidly aging too as the first batches of flats in this area hitting 30-35 yrs of age by 2015.
In fact, before KTPH opened, A&E cases from Woodlands and Yishun were often referred to either NUH or TTSH, the latter which for some reason is slightly preferred over NUH, causing a system and bed crunch in the A&E, which sometimes led to fatalities. (PM me if you want to know) This led to cases from the north even getting referred to SGH instead sometimes. With only 1 hospital in the north right now, I think it wouldn't take long before KTPH becomes overloaded, so NTFH definitely will have to take up the role as an alternative for cases in the northwest.
deskoh91 March 23rd, 2013, 01:34 PM I can tell you right now JCH and NTFGH are under the same group and sharing the same pool of shared services with JMC. This is revealed through a talk with their senior management team. Nurses for both institutions are being hired by JHS.
NTFGH will likely be the preferred choice for the entire Jurong estate (from JW Extension, JW/JE Ave 1, Taman Jurong to Toh Guan), parts of Clementi and northwards to as far as CCK. They themselves said as much when they revealed they are equipped for trauma cases, being the nearest to the Jurong and Tuas Industrial Estates. The caseload is going to be high with industrial and domestic cases.
If anything, we are more likely to see NUH losing much of its catchment and becoming less busy than NTFGH, at least until they intensify the Holland and Queenstown corridors. NUH never had a good reputation in the west due to their status as the principal teaching hospital (and thus sees plenty of trainee doctors looking for case studies). Due to this reason, I think we may even see NTFGH making an impact on load levels on other hospitals like SGH, KTPH and TTSH. I didn't say it will be the busiest, but I am sure it will see it's place in the top three occasionally.

It looks like the road below the bridge is almost ready. I guess it will only be open in phases to facilitate the construction of the bridge. :)
Madrenergic March 23rd, 2013, 05:25 PM I beg to differ. Yes, NTFH does serve an area currently served by NUH, but do not forget that it will serve the northwest region as well, where residents had to go to either TTSH (via BKE/PIE), NUH (via Clementi Rd/Ave 6) or KTPH (via Mandai) previously. Agreed! I too believe that NTFGH will be an important alternative to the already under-equipped KTPH in serving Woodlands and Yishun in the future. However, until KTPH hits that limit, the main catchment area of NTFGH is still a subset of NUH's, meaning that it chiefly serves the West. Specifically, its target area is Jurong up to Bukit Panjang and Choa Chu Kang, which are currently serviced by NUH. :)
I can tell you right now JCH and NTFGH are under the same group and sharing the same pool of shared services with JMC. This is revealed through a talk with their senior management team. Nurses for both institutions are being hired by JHS.

I'm well aware that JCH is under Jurong Health. I think that has been made abundantly clear based on public press releases alone. However, we must be aware that even if JCH is under the same umbrella, it is not the same entity. They can certainly share their administrative resources, but their healthcare staff will largely operate separately. That's just how hospitals work. Furthermore, a community hospital requires different training from an acute hospital. The staff of AH are currently primarily trained for acute care, not community hospital work. These are the same staff that will be operating the 700-bed NTFGH, not the 400-bed JCH. The nurses who you mention are being recruited for JCH are both current community hospital nurses as well as nurses seconded to other community hospitals to train them in community hospital care. They do not work in AH right now, except as a temporary measure.
I agree with you that NUH will be less busy after NTFGH opens. I have said that myself as well. After all, NTFGH is primarily meant to relieve the patient load on NUH. What I never mentioned was whether NUH or NTFGH will be busier, though I personally suspect NTFGH will be worse off. However, I still contest the idea that NTFGH will "place in the top three", because SGH, TTSH and CGH will still be seeing more patients regardless. Now, perhaps the source of our disagreement arises because we have different ideas of what defines 'busy', but if we define it as the number of patients seen in A&E on a daily basis, which is what I have assumed all this while, then SGH, TTSH and CGH alone will take the cake. NTFGH will find its place just after them.
Anyway, this argument is just academic. We all know that it will be busy regardless. :)
