Ghana unveils presidential palace
Ghana has inaugurated a presidential palace costing tens of millions of dollars in the capital, Accra. The Golden Jubilee House, unveiled weeks before presidential elections, will house the president's offices and serve as a residence.
The main opposition party, the NDC, has raised objections to the cost of the luxurious palace. But its leader, John Atta-Mills, has said he will not boycott the building if elected as president in December. The original budget was $30m (Ģ19m), financed by a loan from the Indian government.
The palace was built by an Indian contractor using Ghanaian sub-contractors.
The final cost has not yet been confirmed, but it is expected to be $45-50m, the BBC's David Amanor reports from Accra. The main office complex resembles a traditional seat, important in Ghana's folklore, and the Kwane Nkrumah mausoleum built for the country's first president and representing a tree cut off in its prime.
The opposition has said the government has got its priorities wrong at a time when Ghana should be investing in infrastructure, health and education. But at a ceremony attended by hundreds of guests and dignitaries on Monday, President John Kufuor said people look to the seat of government for "national cohesion, aspirations, and inspiration".
"Even in a hamlet everybody knows the chief's house, which is the first port of call for all visitors," he said. The information minister has said Ghanaians should not worry about the cost, but rather think of the value the new palace brings.

it looks nice, i wish i could see some nite pictures.
popa1980 November 13th, 2008, 04:38 PM Disgusting use of public finances, I would hang 'em all. Parasites. So this is what the rural cocoa farmer is paying for? If I were the IMF I would have threatended to cut off funding if the they went ahead with this plan. Things will even be worse when the oil starts running.
Beautiful and original building though. One of the best new builds Ive seen on SSC actually. ALl the rest are just USA-clones but this one has incorparated the stool of the Ashantis.

This complex is mostly an office building, and $45-50 mill is a reasonable amount to spend for this type of structure.
Do you want Ghana's president to continue working from that slaving castle on the coast?
popa1980 November 14th, 2008, 11:59 AM Yes, Christianborg castle is perfectly acceptable place for the president. Have you even ever been to Ghana? Have you been to Christianborg castle or Accra?
Matthias Offodile November 14th, 2008, 12:18 PM popa1980, I have never ever seen you say anything positive about Ghana, your home-country, what kind of human being are you?:ohno:
hsark November 14th, 2008, 12:54 PM the project looks lost in ghana feels as if it should be in china
popa1980 November 14th, 2008, 06:57 PM Matt, unlike you, I dont take delight in showcase "prestige" projects in poor countries. You know btw, you're the ONLY person I have EVER met who has even tried to defend that disgraceful cathedral in Yammasoukro.
Matthias Offodile November 14th, 2008, 08:35 PM Popa1980. Yeah, I forgot you prefer bashing them from your sweet home in the UK...
As for the cathedral, then you do really know very few people that have been to Côte dīivoire, seldom met someone who said that the catedral is awful.
Moreover, the project that we have seen here has nothing got to do with prestige and when it comes to "poor countries" ....concerning nice projects: then India has to close ALL ITS MALLS AND BEAUTIFUL GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS, tear down all towers, same applies for EVERY African country from North to South Africa and almost all Asian countries (outside Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei and maybe Malaysia). Go ahead for Latin America 8from Mexico to Chili)...but donīt leave out the states where almost 50 million people have no social insurance...and your own country the UK which health care system has been crumbling for years etc. etc...the list is endless
Does Manila need Asiaīs largest mall when many people live like this?

What do you think about this, popa1980? I am sure that it is "legitimate" in your eye because it is Asia, right?

I utterly dislike it when people like you always want Africa to settle for shit and filth for eternity!
popa1980, it is a skyscrpercity page and its should show Africaīs progress like it it is the case with the rest of the forums portraying their new and many prestige buildings in a sea pf poverty.
To my mind, it is fully legitimate to show new projects (including prestige ones) even in poor countries, if not then we can simply close down more than half of the forum of SSC and I am sure many people would disapprove/revolt!
popa1980 November 14th, 2008, 08:49 PM Matt, you have the logic of a 2 year old chimpanzee.
Is the shopping mall and house you have described of being built by government?
And even if they were, are those countries as poor as Ghana?
What a weak argument!
And yes, EVERYONE I have met has said that the cathedral was a disgusting waste of public money. And thats from Nigerians and Ghanaians who have been there, as well as French people I have met who have spent some time in CI. To be honest, only an imbecile would say it was a good idea.

Didnīt expect another anwer from your part! I am so tired of talking to you...
You "applaud" billion dollars homes being built in poor countries in Asia despite the vastness of slums that exist over there - but still canīt stand the fact that Accra gets a swanky building. Thatīs double standard
Well, I know people that criticize the cathedral , too... but are damn proud that it exists, it has become a symbol for the country , go to Ivorian websites, talk to Ivorians, look at website of Yamoussoukro...the first you will see is the cathedral standing there and shining...itīs a tourimst magnet and every Ivorians will be happy to show this piece of architecture to you when you travel the country. The cathedral is still very wellkept and not rotting away in the bush , something that is the case for many other white elephant projects of the 70īs and 80īs era.
Apart from that, do you know how many government-funded projects are built in poor countries that are outside of Africa? Why shouldnīt Africa built such a building? Why always shit?
But why should i continue talking? We talk on croos purpose, anyway
Matthias Offodile November 14th, 2008, 09:10 PM Sorry, for the countless faults that I make , I write too quickly!
popa1980 November 16th, 2008, 12:22 AM Matt, do you have stones in your ears.
Why are you comparing privately funded projects in "semi-industralised" countries to a government-funde project in a poor state like Ghana. Come on, you're not a child so dont reason like one.
As I said, you should applaud yourself for being the FIRST person I have EVER encountered- in person, in the media, or on the internet who defends the Cathedral. Thats quite an achievment! Even though your reasoning is vacuous, ill-considered and ill-conceived at the very least.
Tbite November 16th, 2008, 01:17 AM the project looks lost in ghana feels as if it should be in china
No, the architecture is Ghanaian
hsark November 16th, 2008, 02:31 PM No, the architecture is Ghanaian
i asked a ghanian architect about this project it also seems odd to him ,i would just like to see the reason behind the design
Matthias Offodile November 16th, 2008, 08:42 PM Matt, do you have stones in your ears.
Why are you comparing privately funded projects in "semi-industralised" countries to a government-funde project in a poor state like Ghana. Come on, you're not a child so dont reason like one.
What do you make a fuss out of a government-fianced building?
As I said, you should applaud yourself for being the FIRST person I have EVER encountered- in person, in the media, or on the internet who defends the Cathedral. Thats quite an achievment! Even though your reasoning is vacuous, ill-considered and ill-conceived at the very least.
Well, I know that I am not the only one.... but know dozens of people who consider the building a nice one..it has become a brand of the city considering that it is still very well-kept..
The catedral was one of the big white elephants, yes, but it wasconceived more than 20 years ago , at a time when the Ivory Coast didnīt face the trouble it has now and when governement-financed projects were still en vogue. ...this time is over. nobody will build a catedral nowadaysno, at least not such a project.
It is a beautiful tourist monement, nobody can deny this (not even the Ivorians do it..although the project sparked a lot of controversy) but it is associated with the country....the current president has big plan to revive Yamoussoukro (and if he doesnīt get elected, I am sure his succesor will stick to the plan).
Back to the topic, a government-financed building in Ghana is nothing special, you get them in many other poor parts in the world...and yes, Ghana is poor but the levels of poverty donīt outstrip the levels of poverty that you find in India (popa1980, I have been to India and didnīt look away when I drove past 10 kilometres of the most horrific slums that I have ever seen). The slums in India were the worst that I have ever seen in my life and the government is still building government-financed projects over there. India is notoriously corrupt (cehck HDI)...and malnutrition levels are worse than in many parts of Africa (do you want me to send you the article on your PM?)
What do you see when you look at Accra roads and compare them to the streets of Saigon, for example?
In Accra, I can see many people that can afford to buy a car, even if it is a second-hand car...people in Saigon either walk, have a bike or a motor-bike if they are "lucky". Heck, people in Burkina Faso or Mali have motorbikes and the world looks at their utter poverty but it is a sign of progress when people ride on a motorbike in an Asian country such as it is the case in Vietnam?
Too much double standard for my taste.
angcammoc November 16th, 2008, 08:52 PM I am sorry to say this but that is an ugly building,...i don't like it
qymekkam November 16th, 2008, 10:23 PM i have to agree

popa1980 November 19th, 2008, 12:48 AM Matt you are talking out of your behind yet again.
India is much richer and developed than Ghana. India is self-sufficient in food and is semi-industralised. Ghana is a beggar economy, for the time being at least. The economy of Bombay is several times that of Ghana's. The Indian government is NOT spending money on extravagent projects, and if it were, $50 million would be a drop in the water for a country of its size.
Matt, Ivory Coast was STILL a poor country when HB built that Cathedral, thats what you dont get. Even at its PEAK Ivory Coast was STILL A POOR DEVELOPING COUNTRY. Nt even at the same level of todays SA or Brazil or Mexico. What part of that dont you get? And to add insult to injury, HB claimed that most of the funding came from his own money. What?! From owning some cocoa farms? What a joker! Even the wealthiest cocoa farmers in the world would be hard pushed to spend more than a few million on something. And you will find that the vast majority of Ivorians, especially Muslim, find this Cathedral a wasteful embarrasment.
Matthias Offodile November 21st, 2008, 08:06 PM Popa1980, the usual ceaseless bla bla enters out your mouth.
go on with your bla bla , I will focus on the pics because after all it is a construction page and a thread dedicated to a new structure. Spit around your poison somewhere else.

I definitely agree with you. In fact i find Osu ( Christianborg ) Castle more attractive and beautiful than that Tribe Chair building which cost us $50million dollars
