VIVID SYDNEY 2010: A Festival of Light, Music & Ideas

The annual festival, now on its 2nd year, once again transformed Sydney into a living canvas of light and music from 27 May to 21 June, with events extending from Hyde Park, through Macquarie Street to Sydney Opera House, around Circular Quay and Darling Harbour.

Macquarie Visions illuminates the incredible legacies and achievements of Mqacquarie's 11-year tenure as Governor of NSW through innovative, theatrical and contemporary light displays in a family friendly night promenade along the length of Macquarie Street linking St Mary's Cathedral to the Sydney Opera House.

Designing the Nation

The Macquarie Visions experience begins with a dazzling light spectacle at St Mary's Cathedral, a building for which Lachlan Macquarie himself laid the foundation stone in 1821.

The light display explores the Macquaries' role in the implementation of hundreds of major building projects including the introduction of churches, schools, hospitals, roads, banks and agricultural developments.

The Downer Macquarie Arch, near Hyde Park Barracks, symbolises perhaps the greatest of Macquarie's achievements - the construction of the road over the Blue Mountains.

In a terrain that remains even inhospitable even today, Macquarie charged his engineer, William Cox, with a team of convicts, to build a road in an unknown territory. They achieved this remarkable feat, of over 100 miles, in just six months and won their freedom under his emancipation program.

The road's true significance is hard to quantify. It opened up the agricultural plains to Bathurst whereby settlement and trade developed for the colony, and later a gold rush, through to the development of towns and interior exploration.

FAIR GO

An electrified timeline of Governor Macquarie's achievements illuminates the walls of Hyde Park Barracks Museum in a stunning tribute to a man regarded by many as the originator of the Australian value of the 'Fair-Go'.

Macquarie initiated programs that offered convicts freedom and a chance to start over. Architect Francis Greenway - the chief architect of Macquarie Street - and poet laureate Michael Massey Robinson were two of the many former convicts who made an invaluable contribution to the life of NSW under Macquarie.

The installation fuses historical photographs and modern images to document themes of recognition, emancipation, achievement, humanity, equality, hope, a helping hand and a vision for the future.

Governor Macquarie introduced coinage to Australia, forever changing the lives of its inhabitants. He also established the Bank of New South Wales to facilitate trade and commerce.

The dramatic light installation at The Mint looks at the economic and natural wealth that has been discovered, exploited and developed in Australia since the early accomplishments of Macquarie, from the gold rush to riding the sheep's back to the mineral and mining booms of recent times.

Elizabeth Macquarie described her husband as the "Father of Australia". Macquarie was the first Governor to refer officially to Australia by name in 1817.

Interviews and images on the facade of the Parliament House tell of the many inspirational projects and people that have advanced Australia on the world stage, from the visionary projects of Macquarie's era through to latter day wonders such as the Snowy Mountains Scheme and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

PASTIMES

The Macquaries created a social life for Sydney at all levels of society. They instigated annual fairs and hosted balls, granted workers public holidays, appointed the first Poet Laureate, founded parks, gardens and sports fields and even the first horse race in the city.

This lively and fun light installation at the Conservatorium of Music brings the heady days of the early horse races to life and showcases the excitement and fashion of today's racing world.

It also reflects the broader cultural life that the Macquaries introduced to Australia in art and music, including a soundscape created by the Sydney Conservatorium of Music using Mrs Macquarie's own cello that has been restored for this anniversary year.

LIGHTING THE SAILS

The Sydney Opera House is again the focal point of Vivid Sydney with the lighting of the sails.

In 2009 Brian Eno's light designs of "Lighting the Sails" attracted more than 200,000 people to the festival and video and photos of it were beamed across 200 countries and seen by more than 60 million people worldwide. This year VIVID Live curator Laurie Anderson put her own mark on Utzon's iconic sails.

Ngayon ko lang napansin, parang katulad sa Islamabad International Airport at Indira Ghandi International airport ang dating. I mean yuong mga lumang terminal din nila. Kahit ganyan yang Newark Airport na yan, mero memorable sa akin yan dati, kase hindi my bomb threat nuon kaya sinarado ang airport, almost 1 1/2 nag circle ang AAirlines na sinasakyan ko sa ere. Pag lapag ba sa baggage claim, may mga lasing na akong nakasabay sabay my bombscare naman. Dahil hindi ako nasundo ng dapat sumundo sa akin na kapatid ko, nag rental car ako tapos nakaligaw ligaw lang ako dahil tungingot yuong Puerto Rican na friend ng bro at malimali ang binagay na landmark at direction. Pagod lang ako nuon, kung hindi nga lang wedding ng brother ko, uuwi na lang sana ako nuon he he he

^^ I meant, with you posing along with the Philippine pillar. :colgate: Oh yeah, did you get to see the Korean War Memorial too? There's an engraved stone there as well with the word "Philippines" on it, part of a tribute to the allied nations that helped and served alongside the US during the Korean conflict. :okay:

Meron nga kaming binibit na dalawang teenagers na nang guguhit ng pentel pen habang paakyat sa hagdanan niyan... :lol: pati kami naimbistigahan, wala naman kaming balak umakyat sa loob, binitbit lang namin yung dalawa para dalhin sa sikyu... yung teacher nila nag titili... akala kung ano ginagawa namin sa dalawang bata. :D

^^ Sa Great Hall yata yang sinasabi mo. Open to public pa rin yan, at pwedeng umakyat sa hagdan to the second level of the hall. Di naman sila mahigpit pero syempre dumaan sa security at tinignan talag laman ng mga bags.

Yung sinasabi kong off limits na main reading hall ay yung malaking circular reading room with high bookshelves surrounding it. Pwede ka lang sumilip sa bintana from the second level. At bawal kunan ng picture. Sana pinagbawal na lang flash photography. Kaso siguro yung iba, di na-ooff yung flash pag nag-shot kaya minabuti na lang nila na ipagbawal mangodak. :D

Pagkakaalam ko kasi karamihan sa mga museums sa DC are under the management of the Smithsonian Institution .

Well mayroon sariling museum and Smithsonian kahit na sila usually ang nagmamanage ng mga museum sa DC area. Duon ko nakita na included ang Philippines sa Worlds greatest volcanic eruption, yuong Mt Pinatubo. Maraming marami silang collections duon na very interesting to see. Too bad you missed it. Parang malapit lang yuon sa National Air And Space Museaum.

Baka nga yan yung sa loob ny Smithsonian Castle, malapit lang yun sa Air & Space Museum.
Di ko pinasok eh, sa labas lang ako kodak ng kodak :D
