JOHN HANCOCK CENTER

When this sleek 100-story building was built in 1970, it was the world's tallest. Skidmore, Owings & Merrill designed this landmark using the signature X's on the facade as cross-braces to help the 1,100-ft (335-m) building withstand the winds coming off Lake Michigan.

An alternative to soaking up the view from the 94th floor observatory is drinking it in from the Signature Room restaurant and lounge on the floors directly above. Many say you get a better view from here than from the South Side's Sears Tower - and lines are usually shorter too.

The two towers of the former Wrigley headquarters add to Michigan Avenue's exciting skyline. At night, colored lights illuminate them, as they have done since the building opened in 1921.

Tribune Tower

Topped by flying buttresses, this Gothic style building was completed in 1925. Its faux historic design had won a competition organized by Chicago Tribune, the newspaper whose offices still occupy the building.

The facade is embedded with over 120 stones collected by correspondents from famed sites. There's a rock hailing from each of the 50 states, as well as fragments from international monuments such as Greece's Parthenon, India's Taj Mahal, and the Great Wall of China.

Marina City Twin Towers

When built in 1964, these distinctive 60-story buildings (nicknamed the corncobs), were both the tallest residential and the tallest concrete structures in the world.

With its twin cylindrical structures on the Chicago River, Marina City is a "city within a city", containing offices, residences, a theater, a grocery store, and more. The apartments start on the 21st floor, affording spectacular views, but their slice-of-pie shape creates some interior decorating challenges.

THE LOOP

Named after the ring of elevated train tracks that encircle it, this is downtown Chicago's core, and the city's financial and governmental hub. Abuzz with laptop-toting business folk during the week, the loop is transformed on weekends when a veritable shopping frenzy erupts along its famous State Street. Thos thirsty of culture also come flocking to view the area's many architecturally significant buildings and public art.

A recent infusion of corporate dollars has given the Loop a real boost: the resulting restoration of old theaters and the promotion of the theater district has lured in more visitors, and the many great bars and restaurants that have sprung up mean that the area now offers a burgeoning nightlife.

MILLENIUM PARK & SURROUND

The modern 10-hectare Millennium Park is Chicago's superb new adaptation of its "front yard". The park is home to a dynamic Frank Gehry-designed music pavilion and pedestrian bridge, and a vast sculpture by British artist Anish Kapoor. It also boasts lush gardens, restaurants, a winter ice rink, peristyle, and an interactive fountain by Spanish artist Jaume Plensa.

The Crown Fountain

Designed by Spanish artist Jaume Piensa, the fountain consists of two 50-foot glass block towers at each end of a shallow reflecting pool. The towers project video images of Chicago citizens on LED screens and having water flow through a water outlet in the screen to give the illusion of water spouting from their mouths.

Cloud Gate is British artist Anish Kapoor's first public outdoor work installed in the United States. The 110-ton elliptical sculpture is forged of a seamless series of highly polished stainless steel plates, which reflect the city's famous skyline and the clouds above.

Inspired by liquid mercury, the sculpture is among the largest of its kind in the world, measuring 66-feet long by 33-feet high.

Jay Pritzker Pavilion

Frank Gehry applied his signature style to this revolutionary outdoor concert venue. The Pavilion stands 120-feet high, with a billowing headdress of brushed stainless steel ribbons that frame the stage opening and connect to an overhead trellis of crisscrossing steel pipes. The trellis supports the sound system, which spans the 4,000 fixed seats and the Great Lawn, which accommodates an additional 7,000 people.

BP Bridge

Connecting Millennium Park to Daley Bicentennial Plaza, this 925-foot-long winding bridge, Frank Gehry's first, provides great views of the Chicago skyline, Grant Park and Lake Michigan. Clad in brushed stainless steel panels, the BP bridge complements the Pritzker Pavilion in function as well as design by creating an acoustic barrier from the traffic noise below. It also has a 5% slope to allow easy access for people who are physically challenged.

THE ART INSTITUTE OF CHICAGO

Guarded by iconic lions, and up a flight of grand stone steps is the Midwest's largest, and one of USA's best art museums. Housed in a massive Beaux Arts edifice that was expanded in 2009, the Institute has some 260,000 works from around the globe, and is famous for its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist works and touring shows.

FIELD MUSEUM

Founded in 1893 to display items from the World Columbian Exposition, and renamed in 1905 to honor its first major benefactor, Marshall Field, this vast museum offers fascinating insights into global cultures and environments past and present. SHEDD AQUARIUM

The eponymous John G. Shedd, president of Marshall Field's department store, donated this Beaux Arts aquarium to Chicago in 1929. One of the city's top attractions ever since, it houses some 25,500 marine animals representing 2,100 different species that include amphibians, fish, and aquatic mammals. The latter romp in the saltwater of the glass-walled Oceanarium, which places an infinity pool in front of Lake Michigan to transporting effect.

Take one of those Chao Phraya tourist boats (kuha ka ng ride-all-you can all-day ticket) from Sathorn Pier...... Get off at Tha Tien Pier then walk to WAT PHO........ From Wat Pho, take a walk (about 500m, or you can ride the tuktuk or taxi) to WAT PHRA KAEO & GRAND PALACE COMPLEX..... Then walk back to Tha Tien Pier and take the boat (only one stop) to WAT ARUN, which is just across the river...... After WAT ARUN, take another boat ride back, but get off instead at Oriental Pier and take a stroll of downtown Bangkok...

With these destinations, ubos na araw mo.

There's no floating market in Bangkok. Nasa karatig probinsya yan at kailangan mong gawin in another day.

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT'S OAK PARK

This quiet suburb, seven miles west of downtown Chicago, contains the world's largest collection of Frank Lloyd Wright-designed buildings. It was here that Wright developed his Prairie style (inspired by the flat lines of the Midwestern plains), influencing other architects such as George Maher.

His work was first considered radical, even ugly, compared to the typical styles of the day. Walking through Oak Park's quaint, tree-lined streets, it's evident that Wright's unique architecture does stand out from the norm - but in all the right ways.

I was able to visit two of these structures.


Unity Temple

The compact church, built in 1908, wonderfully demonstrates Wright's use of poured concrete for both structural and decorative purposes.
