shyaman March 30th, 2009, 04:32 AM Another stone arch, ending the easy part of the trek (a relatively gradual drop in elevation). After the arch is another look out…

We did not go further down because of a very steep incline (though steps were cut out form the cliff), which will be very difficult for the kids to negotiate.

shyaman March 30th, 2009, 04:40 AM After lunch, we proceed to Scenic World. This is where you'll have a close encounter with unspoilt nature.
The Scenic Railway, the steepest funicular railway in the world: 52 degrees inclination or 128% gradient or 1:1.28 slope. It’s only a 415m descent through a cliffside tunnel down into an ancient forest.
This is where it starts…

That's right.
shyaman March 30th, 2009, 04:46 AM Below the railway platform is the ancient rainforest. The Scenic Walkway threads through it.

shyaman March 30th, 2009, 05:01 AM Going back up the forest valley, we took the Scenic Cableway, touted to be the steepest aerial cable car in the Southern Hemisphere. It’s a 545m ride into – or out of – the ancient rainforest.

mwg12a March 30th, 2009, 07:19 AM That Blue Mountains reminds me of the Apalachan mountain that stretches from North Georgia to South Carolina I think of farther even. Very similar view , that was the very first mountain climbing I've ever done. A couple of the pictures looks almost like Grand Canyon (ones with visible low lying clouds) had it not for the vegetations around it.
Lili March 30th, 2009, 07:25 AM The kids especially the younger one look like they really enjoyed themselves.
What a great nature trip that was. Awesome shots again! Truly appreciate your sharing.
shyaman March 30th, 2009, 08:54 AM Thanks again @mid and @Lili.

Coldplay Sydney Concert
http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/shyaman_king/2009%20MAR%2015%20-%20Coldplay%20Concert/TicketpicsA.jpg
Six members of the Babol Gang went to watch Coldplay’s 2nd installment of their Sydney gigs at Acer Arena, Olympic Park.
Before going to the venue, we had an early dinner at this Filipino restaurant, just beside Lidcombe train station, where train service to the Olympic Park commences.

My housemates and I went to the Pauline Fathers Monastery at Bundanoon, south of Sydney, some 100 km from where we live. This was my 4th visit to the place and had posted several pics before in the photo album thread.
Here we are in front of the monastery church…

I saw a lot of Anglican churches here. In some areas, especially in the countryside, they outnumber Catholic churches.
What's the predominant Christian sect, that I do not know... :D

Infrastructure wise, they're way ahead of us... they have hundreds of kilometers of elevated expressway (similar to our Skyway). The city, suburban and provincial roads and highways are in good condition.
I never saw smoke belching vehicles that's why their buildings, flyovers and elevated train concrete structures are clean (no soot or black stains on the surface).
Bangkok has more aesthetically designed buildings than Metro Manila.
The Skytrain and subway are clean, has more high tech features and the station designs are nice.
The malls are impressive though not as big as MOA or Megamall or SM City North. I can even say that Ayala Center is not as good as what I've seen there.
No pickpockets and snatchers. At first I don't believe my friend who has worked and lived there for more than 5 years when he told me that it is safe to flaunt your camera, cell phone and other gadgets anywhere 24/7 and most likely you will still have it till you get home. And damn he's right! No wonder foreigners flood the country because they feel safe there.
City streets are relatively clean.
Sidewalk vendors are eveywhere but the vicinity of their vending area looks orderly and not as littered with trash as in Manila sidewalks.
Beggars are not common.
Most of all, Thais are generally more hospitable and polite. And based on my observation, their hospitality and politeness are not selective to foreigners (just like many Filipinos do), but to their fellow Thais as well.
A flood of photos will be posted soon.
Lili April 14th, 2009, 05:04 AM ^^ Very incisive accounts that you and Biboy gave of your observations and comparisons between Thailand and the Philippines.
I hope that people can take a cue from those. It's a sad reality. How can we surpass that? There lies the challenge.
Anyway, Thais are into aesthetics. From food preparation to their clothes, their abodes, everything. It's a way of life for them. Everything should be marked with beauty, grace and gentility.
Can the Philippines be pickpocket and snatcher free? I wish for that day to come. It's very traumatizing when one gets victimized.
manileño April 14th, 2009, 05:11 AM ^ good insight on thailands superior infrastructure and tourism culture.. when i was there in 2003, i was also amazed by their rapid change and urbanization but thought manila wasnt really that far behind, but with the new airport and new rail links, im pretty sure the gap has stretched to at least 6 years now hehe.. their progress lies in the tourists dollars, that's 10 million per year compared to our 2-3million. :D but im confident too that we will eventually catch up in the competition and will soon realize the real worth of our innate hospitality. :) looking forward to seeing the photos :okay:

That pays tribute to their Buddhist beliefs, it plays an important role in the way they live their lives, from the way they treat themselves, others, and their surroundings.

And the pride of the only predominantly Catholic nation in Asia is utterly useless.
No point at all.

Waldenstrom April 14th, 2009, 01:42 PM Bangkok's atmosphere is also very relaxed. Rush doesn't really feel like a rush hour.
The city is veryyyy big but it's easy to be familiarized with the places. There are also different modes of transportation and they're very effective. It's easy to navigate the city.
BKK doesn't have trying-to-be-exclusive business districts (like BGC). There, you can find an ultra modern building right next to an old and dirty apartment or a temple. I love the blend and I like how everything is so unorganized. There are not so many supertalls but their buildings are very stylish, just like the people. I also like how they make simple things look trendy. Ex. Suvarnabhumi Airport isn't really made of expensive concrete but the lighting and design are superb.
The prices are also cheap. You can already have a full meal there at 30 baht (P40). Rent an apartment/condo for 4,000 baht/month.
And Bong is right. Their hospitality is one-of-a-kind. Very genuine smiles. Thais seem to be very behaved in public places, (like the BTS/MRT) unlike rowdy Pinoys, but they party really crazy.
The most amazing place we saw is the Dusit Palace. No words can describe how beautiful and grand it is. It isn't only a work of art but a work of LOVE. Too bad, picture taking isn't allowed there.
To sum it all, now I know why it's the world's no. 1 tourism city... it's because BKK is HOME. :(
I can't recall how many times Bong and I said "nakakainis, bakit ang ganda dito" or "ang sarap maging Thai". It's because what BKK has now can also be done in our country but we just choose not to do so. Of course, it also has many dark sides but it's just normal for any city.
Bkk is a perfect urban experience for every SSCer. You should go there even once in your lifetime, hehe. ;) We weren't able to tour the whole city due to time constraint but I'll definitely be back. :D kop khun krung thep! :D happy songkran to all of us. let there be peace in our kingdom.
mwg12a April 14th, 2009, 03:43 PM Wow, biboy and boyet in BKK together. It's just sad when a pinoy travel overseas, it's hard not to compare pinoys from other nationalities or race. I think those things you guys mentioned are very true, it's something that filipinos would be having hard time to work on because discipline, honesty and sincerity is what pinoys are lacking. I mean, it's sad that there are alot of pinoys who would favor anybody else than their fellow filipinos, and even if pinoys favors a foreign, half of the time, they rip them off, the sad part is they won't just do it to a foreign friend but most of the time those who married a foreign would rip off their foreigner inlaws, I don't know where and how the filipinos get that mentality, whenever they see someone comes from another country, family member/relatives or not, foreign or not, as long as you come from another country, it's either they would rip you off or bleed you dry with any possible material things they can siphone on you. Such a tragedy.
shyaman April 14th, 2009, 10:59 PM ^^ Ako kasama ni waldo @mid, di si waway? :D

In keeping with my city/country icon collection, here's what I bought to represent Thailand...
A Thai traditional dancer, reprsenting Bangkok and Thailand in general...

I was trying to look for a doll/figurine of a modern Thai dancer (those found in Patpong) but can't find any :D.
... and an Asian elephant representing the old city of Ayutthaya (Thailand's ancient capital city). We rode one of them at Ayutthaya. :D

Hmmm...
1. Sex trade there is more liberal.
2. More Filipinos can speak and understand English. I Thailand it's hard to communicate with the taxi driver, sales clerks, etc. Kailangan may visual aid or sign language.
3. Filipino political activists are not keen on changing the government in less than a year.
4. According to Biboy, clubs in Metro Manila are more "sosyal". We've only been to one popular club in Bangkok and that's where the comparison is based.
Isip pa ako.... mas marami yata mas maganda sa kanila keysa atin. :D
Waldenstrom April 15th, 2009, 08:10 AM ^^
you forgot... di sila marunong magbasa ng map. kahit in thai na yung mga addresses at map, di pa rin maintindihan. sa mga protests, mas brutal sila
Sa gimikan places, may laban tayo. :D after we hopped into club/bars in the different sois (streets), I can say Manila clubs are at par or better than theirs. The problem with Manila is that there's a separation of class pa rin in terms of hang-outs. ex. conyo people hang-out at the Fort/Makati/Eastwood while the common people/gays hang-out at Libis, Malate or other videoke hubs. In BKK, there is a mix of crowd and their gimik places are like 3x more than what we have here.
Embassy is way better than Route 66 (BKK's best Thai-style club) :D Bed Supperclub is super-duper small, just like the Temple Bar in Greenbelt hehe. Manila has 5 superclubs, BKK has none. I've seen hotter people in the Fort than in the RCA (Royal City Avenue). :D I think dito lang tayo umangat. he he he. But I have to admit, Thais are more party people than Pinoys. Sa kanila, parang normal lang ang clubbing, sa Pinas onti lang ang nagpupunta sa clubs. Mas masaya rin ang crowd nila, dito sa Pinas ang conservative masyado ng mga tao. hehehe. :D I'm gonna miss Muzik Cafe and Twilight in Pat Pong and Route 66 in RCA :D Songkran street party in Khao San Road is THE best! :D
Pinoys love rock and hip-hop/RnB while Thais love electronic music (House & Trance). ;) I think I can relate more to the Thais hahaha.
Wala lang, P/S cam na nga lang dala ko, di ko pa maitransfer pics ko. nasira ata, nabasa pa rin cam and memory card ko, hehe.

I guess it's the American influence to filipinos is why pinoy tend to be more biased on almost anything American which is not necessarily bad. Most other asians, particularly the ones with a reigning monarch (IMO only) tend to follow european or mostly british ways.
And BTW, waldo AKA Biboy, Sorry, I actually mean Bong, I tend to mix y'allst names, biboy, bong and boyet. Hopefully, I will get it right this time.

manileño April 16th, 2009, 08:50 AM yea GTA means Metro Toronto not grand theft auto :D
but in terms of the skyline views and scale of the buildings, i think Sydney would come closest to Vancouver or Calgary in canada. your airport is also reminiscent of those of smaller cities like Montreal, but both still Canadian looking :)
shyaman April 16th, 2009, 09:24 AM ^^ Yeah. Sydney's airport is not a sight to behold. :D
It's been undergoing continuous facelift for a few years now. Bit by bit, they're upgrading the interiors of the terminal but really not a significant improvement to become at par with the looks of Singapore, Hong Kong or Bangkok airport.
As long as it functions pretty well, aesthetics is not really an issue with the travellers.

During that time, I waited for almost an hour for Bong. I thought his arrival was delayed. I forgot to adjust my time.
I also strolled around. There were so many interesting shops to see. I also had an argument with the pharmacist bec. he's giving me an anti-histamine instead of a decongestant. hehe. Good thing in their drug stores is that, a pharmacist is always on duty to give advise to the patients. Something we don't have here in our country. :)

manileño April 16th, 2009, 10:07 AM ^^ The terminal's interiors looks unfinished, lots of exposed concrete. I expected more oomph.
i think thats part of the design.. thats actually what comes to mind when i think of BKK, exposed concrete hehe! :D but it doesnt look that bad, i actually like the grey and blue finish of the interior :)

The concrete surface is not painted but it's got a skim coat finish that make it smooth. And it blends well with the steel components. I actually like it. Lighting na lang ang nagdadala.

shyaman April 17th, 2009, 06:47 PM From the airport, we checked in at the hotel at 1:30AM.
Imm Fusion Sukhumvit Hotel is a 168-room boutique hotel conveniently located just a stone’s throw away from the Skytrain/BTS On Nut station. Bangkok’s city center is only eight stations away. At around P1,500 a night, it’s a great value for money.

Probably being utilized as a waiting area or meeting place for guests of the hotel with their visitors. Not really meant to be slept in.
crappypants April 17th, 2009, 07:48 PM After 4 nights in Thailand, I can't help but compare Thailand with Pinas.
I did not expect what I found out. And it's a sad reality.
A flood of photos will be posted soon.
i agree except the part about Ayala center. I think Ayala center is more stylish and better character than their central world/mbk . their malls are modern and huge but boring it seems to be smacked in the center of busy streets , ayala center is more pedestrianized. We don't have great first class designers for nothing.
The road infrastructure is very impressive almost at par with first world countries but you will still notice a hint of third world every now and then ,like the sewer smell it seems stronger compared to Manila. they also have a mishmash of overheard wires. other than that I don't think they're that far ahead than us but if we continue to rest on our laurels ...
the millions of tourists who flood thailand regularly is a great boost to their economy, they figured it out early.
I really don't know what happened before they used to study rice technology from pinoys now they export rice worldwide and we are one of their customers. :ohno:
kiretoce April 17th, 2009, 07:52 PM ^^ Filipinos are great dreamers. The rest, are great doers. ;)
crappypants April 17th, 2009, 08:00 PM ^^i agree and are great talkers and debaters just look at this forum.
we always win in debate contests around the world, we are great in grammar.
there are too many social science majors and not enough emphasis on Science and technology. all the success of our Asian neighbors is attributed to their strong science and technology foundation. taiwan, S Korea, singapore we were at the same place 20 years ago, they invested on their people and improving science and innovation and they left us behind.

Sad to say, that's really true, malayo ang Pinas sa Thailand talaga, kung meron tayo ng ganito o ganoon na maayos tingnan, mas marami sa kanila.
Meron pa kayang "Flying stir fry Vegetable" sa night market? I forgot the name of the place, pero masaya panoorin yung hinahagis ng nagluluto yung gulay na nagaapoy minsan, tapos sasaluhin ng waiter sa malayo at dadalhin sa mesa ng customers.
And the nightlife, I guess, you have seen them ..
kiretoce April 17th, 2009, 08:20 PM To me, Bangkok is not Thailand. Just like the Manila is not the Philippines. I find places like the non-touristy places of Chiang Mai, Hat Yai, and Phuket to be more authentically Thai than the capital itself.
crappypants April 17th, 2009, 08:25 PM yeah^^ from what i heard mas maganda ang mga beaches at natural resources naten kasi yung kanila masyadong overdeveloped at naging tacky and pagkadevelop. yun ang comparative advantage naten na dapat take advantage ng mga namumuno. thailand advantage ay talaga yung pagkain at kulturang mas hindi na apektohan ng mga colonizers.
pero Bangkok will get it's fair amount of tourists also, unlike Manila kase kulang kulang ang mayor don. ayoko namang gayahin ng pilipinas ang sex tourist industry nila na number one in the world.
shyaman April 18th, 2009, 03:17 AM I agree that Thailand or Bangkok in particular has its share of rickety structures alongside modern buildings and heritage sites. If you're cruising the Chao Phraya River, you will see a lot of these contrasting images. I will post some pictures soon.
Chao Phraya River has similarities with our Pasig River. It's murky and also teeming with floating water hyacinths/lily but it doesn't smell like Pasig. The boat piers are very simple, some does not even have a nice looking passengers waiting area. Despite these imperfections, the tourists don't mind at all as long as they feel safe and the services function efficiently... and they did.
I think what makes Bangkok or Thailand very tourist friendly is the safety environment offered to tourists... The possibility of being mugged or stolen of your valuables is very nil. That's a big factor that the Philippines cannot offer in more years to come.

Dehins JM. Malayo sa Bangkok yung floating market. Sasadyain mo pa. Isa sa mga gusto kong makita yun pero kulang sa panahon kaya di na nagawang puntahan.
Chao Phraya River bisects the city of Bangkok similar to Pasig River but wider.

DAY 1
April 10, 2009
Despite lacking sleep, we have no choice but to wake up early. We checked out the hotel’s buffet breakfast but was disappointed. It’s all western style brekkie – toast, cereals, coffee, juice – not what we’re expecting.
It’s good that there’s a hypermarket beside the Skytrain’s On Nut station, the Tesco Lotus. It’s a supermarket with several shops, fast food outlets and a food court.

... but the tourists don’t mind at all. Why can’t we have the same tourist attitude in the Philippines?
TO BE CONTINUED…
mwg12a April 19th, 2009, 09:04 PM I don't think the foreign tourists in the Philippines care about the slums in the Philippines, I don't think they are repulsed by it, they know that no matter how rich a country is, you would still see some slums and homeless people. The only difference is, it's a choice for those people while in poor countries, it's more of situational constraints.
So, i'm guessing that the weather in BKK /thailand is very much similar to the Philippines? I know Vietnam has exactly the same weather as to the Philippines. They also get an average of 8 inches or rains a year.
shyaman April 19th, 2009, 11:15 PM ^^ What I mean Elmo is that most tourists in the Philippines are afraid to go near our slums because of security issues, not that they are repulsive to the mere sight of it. Even Filipinos themselves (I admit, that includes me) have reservations venturing into a slum area. So I guess Filipinos have to eliminate that kind of feeling first before the tourists can. When could that be?
And yes, the weather in Thailand is pretty much similar to the Philippines.
le Reine April 19th, 2009, 11:20 PM Stunningly, stunningly beautiful pics of Bangkok. I have to content myself with pics before I could afford to go there too.:applause: I've noticed that even their modern buildings have unique designs. I wonder why can't we do the same here. I can't wait for their very long skyways.
@LMAO and Bong: Basing from the pics, it seems that their slums doesn't look like slums at all when compared to ours. Some houses just look old and dilapidated but not as rickety or have a "slummy-ish" feel like what we have here. If you would show that pic to some of our kakabayan, I'm sure they would say: "squatter na yan?" Aside from that, you would not see the usual drunk half-naked men, naked children, etc. Even if I'm from the Philippines, I would still feel intimidated by that.

Thai handwriting is so beautiful. My Thai classmate/friend would write our lectures in her Thai handwriting.
She said she thinks in Thai so she had to translate it in her head while writing or reading the lectures.
Also, she did not like it when 'double negatives' are used in grammar because she had a hard time understanding them. For example, "It is not uncommon..." or "There is not a day when I don't think about you."
mwg12a April 21st, 2009, 01:37 AM ^^^^ I've seen a thai-lady boy here in town, I was eating at a chinese place, she was tall and very slim, she looks nice, my wife "smirked" that she looks like a dude, I thought she was just jealous. Well, hell! She and his/her female companion were seated next to us, I realized they were thai's because of the way they greeted by one of the waiters who seems to know them well. Friggin tall hot chick talked and it was a man's voice coming out her mouth.. I was like What the heck????? I got fooled and my wife just said "see???? thats what u get for staring at him..."
LMAO
Those are very rare in this area, I mean, this is a very conservative area still being in a bible belt midwest city. I wouldn't doubt if he/she would get discriminated every now and then. This area is just pretty much getting used to diversity because of the number of vietnamese, laos and cambodians already based here even before I moved in this city then lately there are lot of european and russian immigrants not to mention an increasing number of filipinos as well.
shyaman April 21st, 2009, 04:00 AM ^ How did you figure out that was a lady-boy? By the voice?
I was also fooled at first. Hier gender did not cross my mind kasi laging nakayuko at gawa lang sya ng gawa, parang naggagantsilyo.
But when I took a close up shot of hier wares, I noticed hier manly fingers. To be sure of my suspicion, I looked at hier feet and they're huge and bony.
I then asked hier to smile to the camera. So there you area, a ladyboy with hier Mona Lisa smile. :D
Waldenstrom April 21st, 2009, 04:19 AM That's a lady boy in a wat and he looks so feminine and harmless. :D In Pat Pong, ladyboys are wilder, taller and some of them, muscular, hehe. I dunno why some white men hooks up with them. From what I know, these ladyboys are the one being paid and not the other way around. oh well...

OMG!!! these ladyboys are so beautiful!
Kaw kasi puro sexually-oriented mga tours mo mapalayo man o mapalapit :D.
Try to be wholesome sometimes.
yeah kuya anone. be like us, wholesome at daytime. not so wholesome at nighttime. hehe kiddin'
Lili April 21st, 2009, 04:54 AM ^ yeah, Thai lady boys are way gorgeous. Even Filipino guys who undergo sex change in Thailand become really gorgeous. I met one on board a yacht here. The she-male made me insecure about my looks because she/he was more feminine than me. And unlike women who tend to gain more weight, she-males remain slim because of the regulated hormones. (Ours tend to go haywire.) But the transformation of that she-male I met was not yet complete because she/he still had an Adam's apple
Waldenstrom April 21st, 2009, 05:14 AM I read that Buddhism tolerates katoeys/ladyboys. In their belief, a person transgressed in his past life and is expiating his sins hence they are due pity rather than blame, acceptance rather than dismissal from normal social intercourse.
Genital reassignment is now banned for boys under 16 years of age so what others did was to undergo castration at an early age to suppress male secondary sexual characteristics.
Lili April 21st, 2009, 05:18 AM well, I actually think Buddhism is the most compassionate religion. Loving-kindness and all.
shyaman April 21st, 2009, 05:31 AM I also saw one lady-boy once here when I was eating at a Thai restaurant at lunch break. But I'm not sure if he has undergone sex change because his voice is still very much male, and of course the feet and hands are always give-away clues. But damn if you look that the face alone, he's really gorgeous. Kaso nung umorder ng pagkain, biglang napalingon lahat kasi boses maton.
Waldenstrom April 21st, 2009, 05:33 AM ^ Yup, Buddhism is also centered on Metta - loving-kindness/love/sympathy. :D Love/heart means BKK,Thailand for me :D

[continuation]
Less than 500 meters from Wat Pho is the GRAND PALACE complex.
The Grand Palace complex was established in 1782 and it houses not only the royal residence and throne halls, but also a number of government offices as well as the renowned Temple of the Emerald Buddha or Wat Phra Kaeo. The complex has an area of 218,000 square meters.
This is the main thoroughfare from the entrance.
