Unfortunately, cameras are not allowed inside the temple.
The Emerald Buddha is the smallest buddha image inside the wat, but is the most important image.

Encircling the exterior of the temple are 112 garudas, mythical beasts that are half-man, half-bird. They are shown holding hagas (serpents) and are typical of the wat’s dazzling decorative details.

Yes. Safety and accessibility can be magnets to attract casual tourists to the Philippines. Our cultural spots is not as unique as Thailand and our natural wonders may not be jaw-dropping, but the Philippines can draw more tourists if safety and infrastructure will be primary concerns for improvement.

mwg12a
April 23rd, 2009, 02:01 AM
Maybe the government should legalize prostitution so the Philippines can be the number one sex tourism mecca of the world. he he , just joking..

Honestly, there is something mystical about thailand in my opinion. I mean inspite of the calamities in the past and the political unrest in that country. The tourists still keeps on coming back. I'm not necessarily putting our country down but it's just something lacking in the Philippines, filipinos are known to be very industrious when foreigners hire us to work in their countries, our people is adaptable or flexible but I guess the filipinos are so westernized already if not americanized that we are lacking mystery that would draw people from all over the world into our country. Perhaps being the only christian country in asia makes the filipinos and it's culture less interesting than let's say, thailand, Japan, Cambodia, Indonesia or even vietnam. Not that we are boring people because we are not... it's just something something..... Who knows???

The Grand Palace

The Grand Palace was the king’s official residence from 1782 to 1946. Today, the royal family resides at Chitrlada Palace.

There are around 20 small and large buildings in the Grand Palace complex outside of the Wat Phra Kaeo compound. Some huge buildings like the Borom Phiman Mansion can only be seen from its guarded gates which is some 50 meters from the mansion itself. Only a few can be viewed up close and the rest are off limits to the public.

The Aramindra Winitchai Hall

You have to spend at least week in Thailand Elmo if you want to explore everything, from the heritage sites to beaches. Kami nga, daming lugar sa itinerary namin ang di namin nagawang puntahan kasi we under-estimated the time it would take see everything there is to see in the wats.

Those are called Chofahs, they are the bird-like decorations on the end of the temple roofs. Meanwhile, a Chedi (a different term would be stupa or pagoda) is a domed edifice, often quite tall, under which relics of the Buddha or revered religious teachers are buried. :colgate:

The central monument to the Wat Arun comprises a central prang and four minor prangs at the corners and mondops on the sides midway between the minor prangs. The monument’s design symbolizes Hindu-Buddhist cosmology

The central prang has three symbolic levels.

The Traiphum (base) represents 31 realms of existence across the three worlds (Desire, Form and Formless) of the Buddhist universe.
Only this level is accessible to the public…

Continuing on the 3 symbolic levels...

The Tavatimsa Heaven (central section), where all desires are fulfilled, is guarded at the four cardinal points by the Hindu god Indra; and the Devaphum (top) is the peak of Mount Meru, rising above four subsidiary peaks. It denotes six heavens within seven realms of happiness.

It's like a Spanish/Philippine plaza, a palace is located near/beside a temple. :)

The King is also the primary promoter of Buddhism hence the location of the palace. He moved to Chitralada Palace after the mysterious death of his brother.

I'm beginning to appreciate the idea of creating the national administrative center within the walls of Intramuros. If they won't fit inside, add to that the area along the Pasig and the waterfront or Port Area. I want to see the Ayutamiento, the Palacio del Gobernador and other edifices that would showcase our heritage rebuilt. Connecting to the past would perhaps lend a greater aura of authority to government. The buildings within Intramuros and along the Pasig would revitalize the historic core and give back prominence to the Pasig. It would help discourage squatting along the banks and the dumping of pollutants into the river. And I would like Manila to reclaim the symbol of the golden sealion- a noble city married to the sea.

Then there it was, the Baiyoke Tower, Thailand’s tallest building.

The Victory Monument… is similar to Caloocan City’s Bonifacio Monument minus the chaotic vehicular traffic. The rotunda premises is filled with commercial activity (vendors are aplenty) but is still very orderly.

From Victory Monument, we took a cab to Dusit the center of Thai officialdom and an oasis of relative calm in a chaotic city. Tree lined avenues, khlong, old buildings, and the low skyline have all been preserved here.

Our first stop is the ANANTA SAMAKHOM THRONE HALL, constructed in lavish Italian Renaissance and Neo-classic style. It is often used as a venue for important royal and state ceremonies.

Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall now houses the Exhibition of the Masterpieces, a collection of royal regalia and scale models of royal thrones, barges, howdahs, etc mostly crafted in gold and embellished with gemstones. Too bad taking photos are not allowed. We were definitely awe-struck with what we saw. Our Malacañang Palace pales in comparison. For an entrance fee of Baht150, it’s so much worth it.

At the reception, Waldo was required to wear a sarong because shorts are not allowed inside.

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/shyaman_king/2009%20April%2011%20-%20Bangkok/DSC_0173.jpg

She even searched for us while we were inside the exhibition hall just to give the sunglasses Waldo left at the reception, rather than waiting for us to get back.

Then there was heavy downpour. We were stranded for about 2 hours when the compound was flooded.

Thai hospitality extends beyond what we expected. Aware that we have been stranded for more than 2 hours already, the receptionist offered to phone a taxi without us asking for it. She even gave us plastic bags to wrap our feet so that we can wade through the floodwater to the taxi without getting wet.

We’ve spent so much time at Ananta Samakhon Throne Hall and because of the floodwater and rain, we decided not to proceed with the rest of our itinerary at Dusit, such as the Vimanmek Mansion, Royal Carriage Museum and Wat Benchamabophit. Sayang talaga.

That was one of my most unforgettable moments in BBK. I remember that Thai lady who searched for me inside the palace and gave me the shades. :D Also, when they noticed that we're already staying too long inside, they looked for us and told us to go to the reception and wait for the tuktuk/taxi that they called. That didn't end there, they're even the ones who put that plastic bag in shyaman's feet.

Truly amazing Thai hospitality. Bangkok is indeed the City of Angels.

MGA PAKIKIPAGSAPALARAN NI SHYAMAN SA THAILAND
DAY 2
APRIL 11, 2009
[continuation]

It was past 12 noon when we left Dusit.
Taking the SkyTrain again, we get off at Siam Central station where a row of shopping malls is located. The SkyTrain segment between Siam Central and Chit Lom stations is very similar to our MRT3’s Ortigas and Shaw station segment.

Bangkok SkyTrain’s Siam Central-Chit Lom segment has the following shopping malls – Siam Discovery, Siam Center, Siam Paragon, Central World, Gaysorn, Erawan and Peninsula Plaza, all in close proximity to each other.

Manila's MRT3 Ortigas-Shaw segment has Robinsons Galleria, SM Megamall, Shangri-la Plaza, The Podium, EDSA Central and StarMall.

But I find Bangkok’s row of shopping malls generally more upscale than our EDSA version.

Approaching Siam Central station, we passed by Siam Discovery, a 6-level mall, with 200 shops and dining outlets. This one looks like Robinsons Galleria.

http://i135.photobucket.com/albums/q128/shyaman_king/2009%20April%2011%20-%20Bangkok/DSC_0203.jpg

Beside it is Siam Center, an upscale mall which specializes in fashion shops.

Then right beside Siam Center is the newest among the three, Siam Paragon, which is connected to the SkyTrain station.

It’s 2PM and we still didn’t have our lunch. We went to Siam Square, opposite Siam Paragon just across the BTS. The square is packed with independent shops and stalls selling music, books, accessories and clothing.

Street food proliferates… Look how neat-looking they are…

Baiyoke Tower has 83 storeys, is 309 meters high and has a total floor area of 179,400 square meters. For a fee of Baht150 pp (I’m not sure, Waldo can confirm or correct) we had a pass to the Observation Deck at the 77th floor.

Sulit na sulit ang bayad namin. I feel that the complimentary drink is even worth more than what we paid for the Observation Deck entrance if you translate it to Philippine standard. Napakamura talaga sa Bangkok. No wonder Bangkok is a tourist mecca.

Para sakin, parang pinaghalong GB5 at SM MoA yung Siam Paragon. Malaki kasi.

Mas marami at mas malalaki malls natin.

Mukhang very effective you urban planning nila at yuong roadway. That actually reminded me of the view from CN tower in Toronto, they are all very nice. Lili was right, the observation towers in the US and even in CNtower is somewhat a rip off, they are all very expensive and they offer nothing, sometimes even the telescope needs a quarter if you want to view something. Atleast in my toronto experience last time.

^^ Maganda talaga Elmo. Bangkok has more, a lot more, highrise buildings than Metro Manila. Kalat nga lang.

The location of Baiyoke is a plus factor. There no other highrise beside it thus no obstruction at all to the city view.

It was dusk when we left Baiyoke Tower. Our last stop for the day is Ratchaprasong District. The area is similar to Makati’s Ayala Center where shopping malls and hotels abound in close proximity to each other. The SkyTrain’s Chit Lom station is also within the area.

Yup, almost all the time but Bong was mistaken to be an Indonesian once and me, a Singaporean twice  But there were 3 locals who knew we're Filipinos.

In Wat Arun, a Thai vendor spoke to me "Bili na ikaw. Mura dito, sa Manila mahal" ang galing, malamang natuto sa mga Pinoy dun :D

wala lang, mas kamukha natin sila kesa sa mga Indonesians and Malaysians. :) Pero sa tingin ko, mas marami mapuputi na Thais kasi 50% ng population ng BKK noon e mga Chinese.

Remember that time when we were at the train station to Ayutthaya? The guy at the tourist information center asked if we were Filipinos? He distinguished us to be Flips by the way we speak daw.

Route 66 is divided into different wings (north, east, west & south)), each blasting different music or featuring a live band.

The North wing is not a good place to be because it also serves as the main entrance. It looks more like a lobby than a dance hall when we’re there. There’s a DJ station that plays music but no people we’re dancing because it’s used as the main access point to the three other wings.

Our destination today: AYUTTHAYA!

Ayutthaya is 76 kilometers north of Bangkok. To get there, we have to take a train, bus or hire a car. We decided to take the train, to experience how it’s like to go to provincial Thailand via its fastest mode of public transport to the provinces.

We took the SkyTrain to Asok station and transfer to Bangkok’s subway system, the MRT, at its Sukhumvit station.

The MRT has 18 stations which are very similar to Singapore’s MRT and Hongkong’s MTR. They are squeaky clean and modern. This is the Sukhumvit station.

We asked for assistance to the station’s tourist information desk on how to get the earliest train to Ayutthaya. We were told that the fast train about to leave in a few minutes was already fully booked and the next train, an ordinary train, will leave in an hour or so and most probably we will be standing in a cramped carriage. It’s not safe for us, tourists, according to the guy. We can’t argue more simply basing on the number of people at the station waiting for a ride.

He offered us an alternative, hire a car for a day to take us to Ayutthaya and to any tourist spots there at our convenience, and take us back to our hotel. It sounded fair so we took it.

How much did we pay bibs? I think it’s B1,200 which includes the driver, toll fees and petrol. It turned out, we made the right choice. It only took us 30 minutes to get to Ayutthaya compared to about an hour by train.

On the road, we had a glimpse of Baiyoke Tower again...

it's 2,200B and it's the best choice :okay:

Now this is what impressed me… This portion of Thailand’s elevated road extends to only a few kilometers before Ayutthaya.

right :D I realized then that Greater Bangkok is so big. 30 mins. from the city and I still saw few buildings. I wouldn't be surprised if BKK doubles it size in few years time hehe. :D

It took us 45mins. to get to Ayutthaya bec. there was closed portion of the road. (Thai protesters closed it yata)

I love subsurban Bangkok and rural Thailand. Though it's not as scenic as driving to Laguna or Cavite, you'll find serenity while cruising through the wide highway. It's best experienced while listening to Thai songs which I did. hehe.

Then he asked one of us to sit on top of the elephant’s neck. It took some time before I understand what he wanted me to do because he can barely speak English. Yun pala gusto nya akong bumukaka sa leeg ng elepante!

It’s time to reward the elephant by feeding him some bananas. We bought 2 small baskets of bananas at the reception for B???. Magkano bibs? :D
