New design!!! Spire should be around 350m. The pic was taken at the sales center next to the construction site. We know the new developer now too, Lanko Group.

potipoti December 15th, 2008, 01:41 PM it's similar to the empire state building, isn't it??
buildmilehightower December 16th, 2008, 02:30 PM so the esb looking render is the latest render? and not the render in the first post with blackhole thing on top?
Jude12 December 17th, 2008, 06:40 AM The new one is better! :okay:
Daireon December 19th, 2008, 03:22 AM isn't that new york's skyline in the new rendering? lol
Anyway, the first render looks soooo much better, IMO.
kingsc December 19th, 2008, 08:43 AM looks like the empire state building, they might want to think about building it in New York.
SimFox December 20th, 2008, 02:55 PM Actually Chongqing already has quite a few ones in similar stile. One even called New York - New York!
ReiAyanami December 23rd, 2008, 12:31 AM I don't like the redesign, the initial tower was far better. Spires are not the panacea...
skyperu34 December 23rd, 2008, 04:06 AM The original design is ugly. The new one looks much better and reminds me Cleveland´s KEY tower... Thx. for the update !

U sure? take a look at the bar in the middle of my quote. The first design also has some sort of bar rising to the top.
I really hope ur right cus that "thing" is hideous.
z0rg February 13th, 2009, 03:58 PM ^^ The cladding of the newer design should cover the bar thing. I hope I'm right too, really hate the former design.

foxmulder_ms February 22nd, 2009, 06:56 PM I prefer first one between these two. Design in second render is too common..
UD2 February 25th, 2009, 04:37 AM First one will become boring in 5-10 years. The second one if most acceptable in the long term. Plus, the second one may be cheaper to build as well, so.. if it is the second one... good choice.
Most important thing being China needs soem conservatism, cities are building too flashy, too fast. The last thing we want is a skylines full of eye-sores in the opinion of the next generation.

SwimINindy March 9th, 2009, 12:56 AM Frankly, I prefer the original design, This newer one looks like so many other towers under construction. Bland Setbacks to the top, nothing new. Just an Ok looking high-rise. The original looked like something out of a futuristic city. The supporting components placed on the outer facade gave the building a nice vertical component. If i was a pedestrian next to it, i would have been left staring and wondering as my eyes were guided upward.
kingsc March 9th, 2009, 09:41 AM the first design look like the hilt of a light saber, a deadly look if you ask me lmao

Philly Bud July 11th, 2009, 07:23 PM A very handsome tower. I like this one a lot.
I think many of the skyscrapers being built in China are of excellent design, they are refined and tasteful. I think this is a reflection of China's long centuries-old history and tradition of artistic excellence. Now, this is just my opinion, but a lot of skyscrapers going up in places like Dubai, Las Vegas, Saudi Arabia and Russia are really tacky and kitschy ... these buildings will look very dated and gauche in 10 or 20 years. Some of the Chinese buildings are really lovely though! :)

I totally agree more does not always mean better. This is the case with Chongqing it is great they are building many towers, but they should also focus on the aesthetic of the buildings and not just pack the skyline with whatever developers want.

By making a bad rip off of the Chrysler Building? They better build an own style instead of becoming another copy cat of Manhattan.
Maybe it gives the looks, it has by far not the quality of the manhattan monuments, and then we are not even talking about all the rest which makes Manhattan, culture for example.

Problem with many Chinese cities is that they don't even have a museum, and if they have it doesn't contain art... I heard that Chongqing doesn't even have a good bookstore! Maybe that's why only few building are really original and great, and most is cheap copy paste architecture. Japan had the same problem before they develloped their own modern style in Architecture.
Many Chinese cities have their generic wannebe NYC postmodern skyscrapers. Chongqing as well. For now I think it's not a bad thing at all, but I hope the future will bring something better.
ilovecz November 14th, 2009, 10:36 PM Well what you heard is totally WRONG.

ilovecz November 14th, 2009, 10:39 PM What I meant was not that Chongqing wants to become Manhattan. Why would Chongqing want to do that? Manhattan is not like perfect. Just several buildings to give an idea of that kind of architecture and that is all. China has a lot more history that the cities can learn from.

How many good bookstores are there? How many and what kind of museums does Chongqing have? Just tell me if I'm wrong.
aceflamingo23 November 14th, 2009, 10:55 PM Nice! Is it just me or is 2010's architecture in houses and skyscrapers going to be a lot like the late 20s and 30s?
ilovecz November 14th, 2009, 10:57 PM China has tons of good bookstores. Even in my small town there are bookstores as large as any Barnes & Noble in a city as large as Minneapolis. Shanghai has a bookstore that is 27 stories tall called Shanghai Book City, with 9 stories totally for book retail and the storeis above for convention use, etc.(there are several Shanghai Book Cities in Shanghai, but this one should be the most famous). In Chongqing there are similar stores called Chongqing Book City as well. And there are tons of book stores in China solely selling English books (English is a foreign language in China, mind you). How many bookstores do you get in the US with that size? How many are selling books totally in another language? To say a city as large as Chongqing doesn't have decent bookstores is just laughable. I don't even care much to tell you that you are wrong, but this is just absurd.
Wait, I'm NOT attacking you. If I say things which are not true just tell me.
How many good bookstores are there? How many and what kind of museums does Chongqing have? Just tell me if I'm wrong.
Philly Bud November 14th, 2009, 11:00 PM From the renders it looks like a handsome skyscraper that pays homage to the Art Deco masterpieces of New York.
Now, the people of Chongqing should be very proud of the building and progress going on in their city ... and although I have never visited that particular city (I have been to China though) I am quite sure it has museums and bookstores like any other large city in the world. I am sure it has excellent restaurants, shops, music venues, and historical landmarks as well.
It is true that Chongqing will never be New York, but New York will never be Paris, and Paris will never be Bangkok, and Bangkok will never be London ... great cities of the world are unique in their own way. :)
ilovecz November 14th, 2009, 11:10 PM Yes. Just because New York constructed the Washington Square Arch doesn't mean that it wants to be Paris. Sometimes they just give you an idea of the architecture, and that is a good thing.

I've just been looking at some websites and for a mayor city there is a real lack of museums. But that will change in time I think, things happen fast in China.

And if u mean Chongqing specifically, check out the Chongqing Science Center. IDK what its like on the inside, but its pretty impressive from the outside.

Fantastic. Let me know if you find out the final height and name of the tower itself :)
By the way, is Xinhua the developer of XIB and MAD's projects? I mean the same Xinhua as the news agency? So this is a very large entertainment-communication conglomerate just like Time Warner or Viacom in America?
I used to think that Xinhua wasn't a large corporation, just a news agency like Reuters, etc.

Maybe there is a lack of large museums, but there are many, many little museums everywhere as far as I know. Besides, they are planning countless huge museums, theatres and cultural facilities in general even in third tier cities. Everytime I visit the website of a Chinese arch studio I'm amazed to see how many big museums they are building everywhere. Unfortunately we rarely cover them in SSC.

what do u expect ? foudation of this tower has been built since 1997, on hold for ages, then at 2001 they changed the design and built 2 floors underground, and then stopped again, then at 2002 they changed the design for another fucking time and made this crap go up 10 floors above ground then no surprise they stopped it again, now finally they give up shares to another devellopper who changed the design as your crap described "wannabe top" and they made this thing finally without anyprobs go up this tall, no matter how crappy the design is , we dont even care , we r just happy the fact that a huge monster left over structure finally going to be finnishing up , no more a pain in the A
and suprisingly the finally design is way better than one can expect for this project and it becomes a supertall for carying out loud
as for the "wannabe top", do not agree with u, im just tired of explaining

Xander November 19th, 2010, 01:04 AM ^^Chongqing looks foggy like London.;)
I know, in London sometimes its hard to even see through all the thick smog that billows from the sea of factory chimneys as you wade through filth, whilst orphans roam the street trying to shine your shoes for a few bob every step you make.
Nonoka November 19th, 2010, 06:39 PM I'm sorry, but I think it's ugly.
geoff189d November 20th, 2010, 12:38 PM 296 meters now
Not long now before Chongqing joins the exclusive 1000ft+ club!
Hot Rod November 22nd, 2010, 01:37 AM just to be fair, nonoka - this supertall isn't finished yet.
Blue Flame November 23rd, 2010, 04:55 PM I won't belive that Chongqing can build a supertall until one is topped out.

maybe CTBUH is right with 272m?

Blue Flame December 13th, 2010, 11:39 PM No way, it is higher than 272m. I think that with the crown it is ~300m.
Atmosphere December 13th, 2010, 11:46 PM A nice shiny glass cladding will really stand out between all those older stone flats.
Guaporense December 14th, 2010, 04:41 AM The pollution is so intense that the structure of the first floors of the building were dark from the fog, even before being finished.
Hot Rod December 14th, 2010, 08:25 AM ???
Simfan34 December 15th, 2010, 02:24 PM Let's hope we see this clad soon. As the world's most populous municipality, Chongqing deserves a supertall, and the last thing it needs is an unfinished one.
Hot Rod December 18th, 2010, 04:59 AM no worries.
If you look really closely at the last pic, you can see cladding getting started on the top of the bottom 1/3rd of the tower. Sort of odd in that usually cladding starts from the bottom and goes up, but I think we'll start to see this baby clothed in a meaningful way - very soon.
I agree, can't wait! and yes, Chongqing deserves many supertalls, certainly moreso than Dubai and other cities that already have 'em!

I was in Chongqing October 2010 and to me it looks dirty from a far but clean once you get up close. I stayed at the Somerset hotel in Jiefangbei. It was one of my favorite cities in China, I would definitely go back.

err...as is the case with every other developing country.
Make up your mind, you either loathe the country or you love it judging by some your posts
Hot Rod February 28th, 2011, 04:19 AM at least China is doing something about their slums, instead of other countries - such as the one Hellrazer is from. ...
Also, if you've ever been to China, you'll know that these pictures don't do those little cities any justice. It's not the same as a latin american shanty town, Chinese 'slums' are full of culture and history; yet the Chinese govt IS picking these people up as the land is reclaimed for skyscrapers and not just 'moving the slum' as is the case with most other Industrialized Nations (see US-Eminent Domain).

On another topic, it's almost strange that SW China goes from nearly tropical in summer to looking so cold in winter.

it certainly isn't completed, at least not based on the renders.
Or did they make a design change?
If so the cladding really has to be spectacular or this building is one big boring gray tower.

Both Tianhe Tower, Chaotianmen WTC and Chongqing Wharf project may miss the 300m target either. Also the CQIFC is very likely cancelled, so is Hongyadong 2, and some other.
In the end, the city that shocked us with countless supertall proposals has become a second tier boomtown skyscraperwise. There are a lot of unclear monster proposals for a mid-long term for Chongqing, but I don't believe any of them now.

It really doesn't matter to people except to us skyscraper geeks. 300m is just a number, 271m is still really a very tall tower. It seems to me that Chongqing is a city that is developing steadily and intelligently. You see all these unheard of cities in China that are building supertalls for the sake of it, and to me that is a very Dubai attitude. Those supertalls won't be filled, and there is no demand for them. It's just a my tower is bigger than yours attitude.
Chongqing is building loads of skyscrapers, the fact they don't hit the magic 300m is pretty irrelevant to anyone but us on this website. Chongqing is having its skyline changed rapidly, a few extra metres doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, building towers that will actually be used is far more important. Chongqing will develop steadily into an internationally renowned city, it takes time, there isn't an instant fix.
What is great about Chongqing is that all the towers being built seem to fit effortlessly into an already existing urban fabric. I think a lot of these chinese new towns are bleak and soulless. Little by little Chongqing is adding to an already decent skyline, and adding to it with attractive towers that serve to beautify the citys appearance. I think that as the city continues to clean up and modernise, it will become a world-class city, way above other Chinese cities that may have built supertalls. What Chongqing lacks in supertalls it makes up for in quantity and quality.

I T-O-T-A-L-L-Y agree with this and could not have said it better myself: Chongqing already has amazing skylineS and they are adding amazing towers that look like supertalls already. The fact that so far they have been somewhat shortened - only means something to US, the skyscraper enthusiast community. But to joe blow from wherever, when he goes to Chongqing, he SHOULD be impressed with the opinion that CQ is an already established premier city of the West of China and that it is growing into a world city. He'd also probably assume that those towers are supertalls, rivaling those in other cities.
I do have faith that as Jeifangbei runs out of land, that new proposals will be supertalls and that a few supertall proposals in JFB will actually be built. But 271 is not that far away from 300m, and the darn United International LOOKS like a supertall nonetheless, not to mention CQ Poly, YingLi, and even WTCC.
I also LOVE the way CQ seems to be organically developing and retaining as much green space as possible. This is unique, especially in China and given how big CQ already is. I think this will pay off in the long run, and I can attest that this city's development is on par with the best world class cities - the same can NOT be said for other Chinese cities that build for the sake of it.
kazpmk August 5th, 2011, 03:20 PM sad about the height correction, but not surprising
KillerZavatar August 5th, 2011, 05:03 PM also look at singapore. that city has no supertall, but still one of the top skylines on this world, so i'm pretty great with towers like these.
lianli August 5th, 2011, 05:40 PM Of course those troll developers are a pain in the ass, but 270m is already pretty high. For a city that is just at the beginning of it's development Chongqing already has a remarkable skyline.
When the time is right those supertalls will rise.

travelworld123 September 19th, 2011, 08:48 AM i agree with the above posts about not needing too many supertalls. I believe density (with of course some good skyscrapers) beats a skyline that is 'fake' with one or two supertalls popping out where it otherwise seems empty and cold.
Whats the final design? I'm confused and can't be bothered reading back all the pages
Also, has Chongqing's skyline always been like this before all the attention has been here? Or was it empty sort of like Pudong was marshland before development?
Hot Rod September 19th, 2011, 09:24 AM it has always been dense, just not as tall.
Bassik September 21st, 2011, 09:48 PM Wow! seems higher than it is :)
Hot Rod September 22nd, 2011, 07:17 AM Bassik, I think so too. Particularly since that area of land is on a decline yet it is not only significantly taller than anything in its vacinity, but it is taller than anything else in the skyline too. ...
I think they will have an updated height once it is finished or officially topped off - and it will be 300 m or higher, since it definitely looks to be.
