With 20 thousands km of railway network, South Africa is very far away from any other African country most of its cities are connected to the railway. However from this 20 thousands Km of railway network only half is active.

Algeria has almost 5000 km of railway only 3 973 kilometers are in active use. Probably the second after South Africa.
The railway network is concentrated in the north, therefore more the 80% of the country surface is not covered. A budget of 18 billion dollar has been approved to the SNTF (governmental company) to modernize and build more lines mainly around the cities. new lines are under costruction toward the south of the country.

the rail way is going to be 10 thousand km in the nest few years, 20 billions of investisment are poured to SNTF, Algeria will be Always the first in All arab countries in matter of railway and roads. thats fact and u have to admit it.. without saying that Algeria was a french province or Algeria has oil and u dont have, the tomato and phosphat was were more expencive than the oil, so what u have done with that money..

Algerian National Rail Network

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/3/33/SNTF.svg/500px-SNTF.svg.png

ELECTRIFICATION

An ambitious plan of electrification was initiated and will relate to the whole of the Northern By-pass. The Algerian capital, it will see the electrification of its suburbs with the lines Algiers - Tizi Ouzou and Algiers - El Affroun. Finally, penetrating Boumedfaa - Djelfa will supplement the building site.

SIGNALLING & TELECOMMUNICATION

For obvious reasons of safety and optimization of the rail traffic, it will be a question of being harnessed with the renewal of the infrastructure of indication on the ways. The modernization of all the system of telecommunications by, in particular, the start up of a modern and protected network being based on new technologies of communication (GSM-R and ERTMS) is in good way

Large Axes of the Modernization plan of the Rail in Algeria

Modernization of the Existing Lines: 855 km.

Doubling of lines:430 km

Other lines: 1.120 km.

Line the high plateaus: 600 km

The loop of the South: 800 km.

Other lines under development: 828 km.

Projected Lines: 1.400 km.

Modernization of the existing lines

Because of the out datedness of the current network, it is envisaged the modernization of the network between:

Bisekra - Touggourt.

Bouchegouf - El Kouif.

Thenia - Tizi Ouzou.

Béjaia - Beni mansour.

Tiaret - Saida - Moulay Slissen.

Tlemcen - Redam Demouche.

Annaba 6 Ouenza

Creation of New lines

The new railway plan envisages a thickening of the rail network in the center, the east, the west, and the south of the country. Several new projects are currently in building sites, it concerns the following lines:

Touggourt - Hassi Messaoud (new city and oil pole)
which constitutes a significant investment

Bordj bou Arréridj - Khemis Miliana, while passing by
Algiers and by serving Blida and Bouira with a line at
high speed

Mécheria – Béchar, long line of 360 km.
The line of junction between Mécheria and Redjem –
Demouche, long 240 km

Boumedfaâ – Djelfa, continuing with the construction of
the Loop of the south with Laghouat, Ghardaïa and
Ouargla, is on 240 km.

Morocco centered more to modernize the railroad that left the French protectorate, Morocco managed to double and to electrify a great part of these rails, also he constructed new modern lines of great importance, ONCF could extract the maximum profit of what left France.
Fans of the railways know the differences that exist between these systems in all these pictures and they know which they are the best and effective.

Thanks for the answer.

I don't have enough data about tunisian railway.
For Morocco, The railway that french and spanish built in the early 20th century was narrow gauge railway. Nowaday Moroccan railway have 0 km of narrow gauge rw and its the most electrified of NA, which means that they've changed several miles of railway.

Mauritania - Nouadhibou to Zouerate. The longest train in the world.

The line runs for 700km from the Iron Mines at Zouerate to the Atlantic Ocean at Nouadhibou. At times it can be over 2km long, carrying 200 cars. When I travelled on it it was about half of this, but still impressive!

Mozambique: The Nacala Corridor. This line runs from the Indian Ocean port of Nacala inland to Cuamba, in the Northwest of Mozambique. A freight line exists which links which links Cuamba to Malawi. There is also a disused line that runs from Cuamba to Lichinga, near Lake Malawi. The passenger trains use old South African cars. There are still signs in Afrikaans on the walls and windows.

The Benguela railway stretches from the Atlantic port of Lobito to Luau, 1,344kms to the East.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40639000/gif/_40639501_angola_railway_map203.gif
http://www.cabula6.com/ANGOLA/11400.jpg

Completed in 1929, it used to link with the Congolese railway system, through to the Zambian railway system and Copperbelt, providing freight and passenger transport for this vast area of Africa.

Operations ceased in 1975, with the advent of civil war, but in recent years, oil money and Chinese investment has begun redeveloping large stretches of the railway.

It is currently operational between Lobito and Cubal (145kms) and Caala - Huambo - Katchiungo (80kms). The line between Cubal and Caala is currently being relaid (possibly completed by now), as is the line between Munhango and Luau, a distance of 408km. The railway is due for completion by 2011, at a cost of more than US$ 2bn.

Their suppose to have a conf. on the line in the coming months not sure when. Last I spoke to my father he said from the Congo side it is ready all that is left is the Angolan side. Tenke Fungurume are trying to speed up the process as this will be the shortest route for them to use. The Fungurume mine will be the largest copper/cobalt mine in the world.
