A bathhouse is the last place you'd ever see me. Too much male bonding.

Hammam, public bath and pools are all completely repulsive for me. I like my privacy and don't feel like swimming in the same pool where someone soaks his bottom.

Hammams (used to be) an important social aspect in MENA. People not only went there to bath but to socialize (kinda like cafes). In Algeria there used to be a long list of hammam rituals for brides-to-be and their lady friends including bathing in rosewater and having tea-parties there. Also mother-in-laws would go there to hunt for future brides for their sons (kinda weird, but I guess they wanna check them out naked :P). It goes without saying that homosexuality was common in these places (or at least - it was a good place for initiation :P).

Nowadays it's mostly old people who go there, out of old habits or for therapeutic purposes.

I have to been to this one in Algeria where they have family-hours, men-only hours and female only-hours. It's very ancient and supplied by an underground water source.

There is something in all these pics that makes me uneasy.... I feel like people are bathing in others dirty water...

needless to say I won't be visiting one.... and as Rabih said earlier... I'm worried about being raped in a Leb one..lol

Looks more like a swimming pool - with added soaps and suds. Without constant replacement of the pool water or some disinfecting mechanism, seems like it would be an awfully unhygienic place to go to!

What is the modus operandi of the Hamam? How do you go and bath there so you don't end up coming out dirtier or with others germs and diseases?
