Royal Holloway, University of London has spent £100 million over the last 3 years on new buildings. This includes new Halls of Residence, a 400 seater lecture theatre with 8 seminar rooms and an extension to the School of Management. This is to support the Universities growth over the last 5 years from 5000 to 8000 students. I also will try and get some photos up.

Northumbria Uni (Located in Newcastle) has built new buildings and a new campus, I don't know how to upload pictures on here, but a simple google search is easy enough, also Newcastle Uni is now investing money into new buildings. I also heard in the local newspaper that the town of Wallsend approximatly 4 miles outside of Newcastle also want to build a Uni.

3 Uni's within such a close area that used to have a large amount of industry, maybe we are going somewhere.

Wallsend: is that Tynemet?

I'd have thought South Tyneside would have a better chance, if any locals were to merge with it, as it has a very good reputation for its maritime training and education programmes.

If the FE colleges all aspire to become universities, who will do FE?

The first phase of a £75 million development into sunderland university is opening soon after being completed a couple of weeks previously. It's named "CitySpace" and its a high tech sports center which will be a training base for the 2012 olympics.

Here are some pictures of CitySpace, and the rest of the planned redevelopment.

I was unsure about the the CitySpace building's exterior (largely I think because I was so devastated by the demolition of Wearmouth Hall), and I still have some reservations, but internally it is a magnificent facility and much better than the site's previous incarnation. As you say, there's lots more to come for the City Campus too.
